landing his next job ended up being a far more arduous journey than he imagined
Squires had thought he had a warehouse job lined up at the new Loblaws facility in East Gwillimbury
after receiving what he said was a verbal offer with an expected email follow-up
he then found out the offer was not real — and ended up out of work for months
Squires said he has finally landed a full-time warehouse job in Aurora with Flow Hydration and is now working to bounce back
Squires recounted his story in December
left jobless after attending what he thought would be his first day at Loblaws
only to discover he had not actually received a job
Squires found himself in a dire situation and his life turned upside down after leaving a good job for this one
A Loblaws spokesperson said at the time it does not make verbal offers in its hiring practices
there was no verbal offer in this case and the situation was due to a “misunderstanding.” The company expressed sympathy and said they reached out to the career help company Job Skills to have him to apply to another position in the Loblaws network
Applying for other Loblaws positions did not work out for Squires
Squires said he landed a position he is happy with
warehouse work similar to what he expected with Loblaws
“It’s a really good place,” Squires said
“I’m doing very well there.”
I was putting out applications everywhere,” Squires said
he said he yet to move on entirely after the Loblaws ordeal
“I just don’t want this to happen to other people,” Squires said
“My goal right now is to get my bills caught up and everything first
Then I’m going to be talking to a lawyer
Squires said he has had people reach out to him experiencing similar things in the job hunt process
“All I care about is what I lost in the process,” he said
“It was a terrible thing that happened … I just want to right a wrong
and I don’t want anybody else to go through (that).”
“I’m taking it day by day right now,” he said
“Just get myself out of this hole first and move on with everything and go from there.”

“I propose renaming Balfour Beach to better reflect the values of fairness
inclusivity and community that I believe our town stands for,” read the letter
recommending council rename the community “Gaza Beach” as well as “acknowledge and address” the supposed historical implications” that come with the name
The letter implied an unnamed town councillor was receptive to the proposal
Authored by former foreign secretary Arthur Balfour and issued by the British government in 1917
the Balfour Declaration proffered British support for a national Jewish homeland
and became a core tenet in the British Mandate for Palestine
eventually leading to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948

Despite the request gaining traction in some anti-Israel circles
town council saw no merit in the suggestion
A town spokesperson declined to comment further on the matter
Canada has experienced an explosion of antisemitism since the Oct
which saw hundreds of Palestinian terrorists unleash a campaign of murder
kidnapping and sexual assault on dozens of Israeli communities
Anti-Israel activists have used the attacks to justify a regular series of demonstrations
rallies and intimidation marches — often in Toronto’s Jewish neighbourhoods and communities
Ontario vice-president with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA)
commended the town for their prompt response
“Mayor Quirk and the council acted responsibly by rejecting an attempt to inject unnecessary controversy into the community,” she said
“Their clear stance ensures that local spaces remain places of unity rather than division.”
B’nai Brith Canada’s Austin Parcels said renaming Balfour Beach is yet another attempt by activists to import a foreign conflict into Canada
“(Arthur Balfour) supported the Jewish people’s right to live in their indigenous homeland,” he said
“Erasing his name is a deliberate effort to undermine that history and delegitimize Jewish self-determination.”

The tragic death of a 15-year-old Keswick boy has left his family and local hockey community questioning the care he received at Southlake Health
had a cardiac arrest while in gym class at Keswick High School March 17
After being rushed to Sick Kids Hospital and having emergency surgery
the family believes this may have been preventable
Father James Ion said his son had been battling a lung problem for several months
he said his son was taken to Southlake Health on Saturday
But doctors cleared him after an X-ray despite ongoing concern from the family
“I’ve lost all faith in the Newmarket hospital … The only way he was going to be saved was Saturday night,” Ion said
“We want to try and prevent this from happening again,” Nolan’s head coach
said while speaking alongside James Ion via speaker phone
“Maybe doctors in our health-care system maybe need to take a little more precautions when it comes to children.”
The family said Nolan first saw complications around November when he was having trouble breathing while playing hockey
they were told Nolan had "walking pneumonia" and a punctured lung
but he recovered and got clearance from doctors in the new year
Nolan would again have some struggles breathing
though only when doing high-exertion play in hockey
He didn’t have the wind capacity,” Baker said
“You’d only see it on the ice.”
who did a chest X-ray, with plans to refer him to a pediatrician
But when Nolan experienced severe pain on Saturday
doctors expressed that everything seemed fine
and that his lungs had healed from the previous puncturing
“They overlooked every little problem” the family was asking about
Ion said Nolan’s mother told the doctors about the blood clots being an issue
He added he himself had experienced severe blood clotting in his leg at age 18
but doctors at that time were surprised about that when he was a youth
Ion recounted his son being rushed to the hospital by ambulance on March 17
He said paramedics did everything they could
and his son went through cardiac arrest three times from Keswick to Newmarket
where Ion said they removed five blood clots from his lungs and a couple from his heart
“I can’t say anything about SickKids
because they have a great reputation,” Ion said
but the hope is that something could be learned here
“Seeing this young lad pass away from something that maybe could have been preventable,” Baker said
I don’t want somebody else’s child to lose a life because maybe there was something else that could have been done … How can we make this a teaching moment?”
Baker said he had coached Ion throughout his childhood
Although Baker went off to coach in another area
he returned to coach Nolan's team this year
“We never really disconnected because I always saw him at home
say hi and make fun of each other,” Baker said
wouldn’t hurt a fly,” Ion said of his son
The father and son duo had a deep bond over the game of hockey
“Nolan loved the game of hockey,” Baker said
The hockey and surrounding community are showing their support to the family through the tragedy
The Upper York Minor Hockey Association said many teams will be having 50/50
chuck-a-puck and other fundraisers happening in their next games
“Our heartfelt condolences to the Ion family and the entire hockey community,” the organization said
“Please consider participating to help support the Ion family.”
Several surrounding hockey teams and organizations are also donating to support the family’s GoFundMe
“From our hockey family to yours,” the Newmarket Renegades U18A team said on GoFundMe of its donation
The GoFundMe for the family has raised more than $51,000 as of March 20.
Baker said he has worked in minor hockey for all his life and there are no words to describe the response
really … Giving the family some peace
giving the family some really encouraging love
The amount of monetary donations is outstanding
the coming together of teams that compete every day and raise their sticks
and becoming a brotherhood and a sisterhood
it’s just a different beast,” Baker said
Baker said the donations will go to help the family through this difficult time
covering bills while taking some time off work
Although the family is still working out details
he added excess funding could go to charity.
TheGoFundMe is available at gofundme.com/f/donate-to-support-nolans-recovery
“Thank you so much for showing kindness
financial assistance to the family during this difficult time,” organizer Alexis Leeking said
“We continue to accept donations on behalf of the family as they will need the support in the days and weeks to come
Peacefully passed away surrounded by his family

Bradley Strickler has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sandy Gauthier.
The mobile police unit located near the home of Sandy Gauthier.
The man who shocked a community by raping and then setting the home of an 85-year-old matriarch ablaze has been sentenced at Newmarket court.
Bradley Strickler, 24, of Keswick, was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Sandra Gauthier on Feb. 11 and then sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years on Feb. 20.
When images of her burnt-out bungalow on Keswick’s quiet Miami Drive were released in January 2022, the community was left reeling at Gauthier’s passing. That turned to further dismay a month later when an autopsy confirmed that Gauthier died as the result of homicide.
In February that year, York Regional Police released a grainy surveillance image of a man walking down the street, indicating investigators wanted to speak with the individual.
In November 2022, Strickler, then 21, was charged with Gauthier’s murder, sexual assault and arson with disregard for human life.
Police said Gauthier was identified using genetic genealogy and DNA testing.
Gauthier, a grandmother of nine, was remembered as a “kind, gentle and caring soul.” She lived in that same home with her husband until his death in 2014.
She was well known for her work gardening and chatting to neighbours.

Paisley took to social media to find walking buddies at the MURC
It wasn’t long before she found a steady companion to join her three times a week for light strolls
“We only manage about 20 to 30 minutes,” Paisley shared
but it means a lot to have someone to go with.”
Paisley’s mobility is limited due to “drop foot,” a condition requiring her to wear a supportive brace
along with a rare lung condition called pulmonary hypertension
“It makes anything with endurance very hard,” she explained
she finds the facility’s accessible setup to be a game-changer
Paisley’s enthusiasm for the track was clear
The space boasts three lanes — one each for walking
passing and running — and offers stunning views through large
from smooth rubber flooring to easy elevator access
ensures the MURC remains inclusive and approachable
“It’s just a wonderful experience,” Paisley said
“Everyone respects each other’s pace and space.”
Paisley recalled her days walking in the local mall
and it’s just easier all around,” she explained
Georgina has been praised for its commitment to accessibility, with the MURC and other key facilities like the Link and Georgina Ice Palace designed to meet AODA standards
The town’s accessibility team works closely with the community and regional partners to make Georgina a model of inclusion
From wheelchair-friendly pathways to inclusive play structures
the town’s focus on universal design is as refreshing as the MURC’s rubber-paved track
The town’s partnership with platforms like Access Now also helps residents review and rate local spots for accessibility, and the upcoming replacement Civic Centre is expected to set a new standard.
“Georgina continues to make great strides in ensuring an accessible community for all,” said a town spokesperson. “It is Georgina’s goal to be seen as a leader in accessibility and inclusion.”
As Paisley and her fellow walkers continue their meetups at the MURC, Georgina’s vision of a barrier-free town marches forward — one inclusive step at a time.

the 85-year-old was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death before her killer set her Miami Dr

the defence argued their client was intoxicated after a booze-a-thon with loved ones
He then went for a walk before entering Gauthier’s home
But hanging over the young man was the fact he had sexually assaulted

Two adults were shot and killed in Keswick’s Bayview Park
but police say the isolated incident poses no threat to the public
A wave of gunfire shattered the serenity of an upscale Georgina neighbourhood early Wednesday morning
leaving two adults dead in what York Regional Police are calling an isolated but unsettling incident
The violent scene unfolded at Bayview Park, near Bayview Avenue and Lowndes Avenue in Keswick
York police officers responded to calls reporting gunshots
He reassured the public there is no ongoing threat
though details about the victims were limited as next of kin had yet to be notified
Investigators are actively working to identify the suspect or suspects involved
and we are appealing to members of the community who may have dashcam or security footage to please contact investigators,” Nebrija said
The rare outbreak of violence in the tranquil Keswick neighbourhood left residents unnerved
who lives on Bambi Crescent adjacent to the park
said the incident was particularly jarring given the area’s typically peaceful atmosphere
“I heard the gunshots this morning, but I didn’t realize they were shot right outside my bedroom window,” Noad told YorkRegion.com
Several local schools were placed under a brief hold-and-secure order as a precaution
the proximity of the violence was enough to leave them on edge
said his morning dog walk was abruptly cut short after police warned him that it “wasn’t a good idea” to be outside
and I thought it might be duck hunting since that happens at the lake
But then I heard three more shots that sounded like they came from two different guns,” Borup explained
My neighbours have been here for 20-plus years
and they’ve never seen anything like this,” he added
The double homicide comes at a time when York Regional Police are reporting a rise in violent crimes, including shootings and homicides. The recent trend has sparked concern in communities unaccustomed to such incidents.
“Given the area where this has happened, it is concerning,” Nebrija acknowledged. “It’s in a park in a neighbourhood. People are around, walking to school or wherever they may be going in the morning. That alone is concerning for us.”
Erin Ambrose was named defender of the year in the PWHL’s inaugural season
Article contentThe 30-year-old veteran of Canada’s national team was Montreal Victoire’s top blue liner in Year 1 of the league
finishing with 18 points in Montreal’s second-place regular-season finish
Ambrose is no stranger to the victory podium with three world championship golds
an Olympic gold and an NCAA title with Clarkson
In a season of firsts for everyone in the PWHL
Ambrose set the bar for minutes played in a game
logging 55:18 of ice time in Montreal’s triple-overtime loss to Boston in Game 2 of their PWHL semifinal
“It took a long time to fall asleep afterwards
We actually stayed in Montreal the next day and then travelled to Boston on the game day
That was decided on before the game even finished
“I think just how to manage the day-to-day
but we have kind of been used to from the last time we played consistently in either the CWHL or college is you play every Saturday or Sunday or every weekend
I think just getting into the groove of you have weekday games
I think it was mostly learning how to take care of myself on the off-days and in the downtime as the year went on.”
“I think my favourite part of it is it’s such a major city
but it doesn’t seem all that busy all the time
I’m pretty close to downtown and I can walk around down there and not be crowded at crosswalks
but it doesn’t feel like a big one at the same time.”
I think the group that we have had for the last few years
but at the same time we are driven and we push each other in ways that are pretty special
It is one of the most special groups I have ever been a part of
“I think my ‘oh my gosh’ moment was her overtime winner in Calgary (2021)
but then it happened more frequently than you would think
Even last year in the PWHL to tie the game up against Toronto
she literally went through all five players on the ice by herself
She just does it so consistently that I shouldn’t even be surprised anymore.”
you are probably going to say (one-time Leafs’ goalie) Curtis Joseph because he is probably the most well-known
but for me it’s Sean Walker (Carolina Hurricanes) or Chris Tierney (former NHLer now with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL)
He played with us on York-Simcoe Express.”
“Probably my favourite one is stuffed peppers that I make
probably because I can usually get a three-pack and have 11/2 each time and it’s two meals in a row.”
if you would have asked me this five years ago I would have said zero because I wasn’t much of a napper
I feel like with age I have become more of a napper and I am very much OK with it
hopefully in some sort of management role once I’m done.”
I feel like the better ones we don’t get to consistently use
“I think it would be having someone consistently mic’d up
just hearing what people have to say and getting it out there right away because a lot of mic’d up experiences are shown later on
I think in-game stuff is pretty cool to see.”
but I have always wanted to go to Wimbledon
I mean obviously the bigger events ever and I would love to do it one time.”
I like the snugger feel to it and I feel like when things get too loose
He was my coach in junior and I had him for three years I believe and I think the way he saw how I saw the game
he allowed me to kind of hone in on that and really make a big difference.”
I think she is one of not just the best Canadian athletes
I would do a lot of things to be able to sit down and have a dinner with her one time.”
“I think one that really stands out is obviously the end result of (Olympic gold at) Beijing
but more specifically there was a goal against Finland that I assisted on of Sarah Nurse’s
I made a literal cross-goal-line pass to her
I think honestly she shot it from below the goal line
That is probably one of my favourite plays in recent memory.”
“I would love to be able to play with (U.S
national team and Boston Fleet player) Megan Keller
I think she is one of the greatest in our game right now
(Finland national team captain) Jenni Hiirikoski would be up there
And then if I could throw in a former player I would say (Canadian national team player) Catherine Ward.”
“Probably a grilled burger on the BBQ and some corn on the cob
but nothing beats that at the cottage in the summertime.”

Two Barrie men have been charged in connection with a double shooting — turned double homicide — that occurred in a Keswick park Wednesday morning

area – as and isolated incident and remained tight-lipped about any details surrounded multiple shots heard in the park
police said the homicide unit identified and charged John McKay
The victims who were gunned down just before 7:30 a.m
in Bayview Park have also been now identified as Reilly MacDonald
Police said they are unsure at this time if the two parties knew each other
neighbours were on edge about the early morning shooting as they were about to head to work or bring their children to local schools
Christopher Finley said that his Dodge 1500 pickup truck
was hit by a stray bullet fired from the park
Finley’s truck was parked several hundred metres north of the park where the shooting took place
A woman walking out of the park with her dog at the time of the shooting was in “hysterics,” according to Finley
as she was on the phone speaking to police about what she saw
Finley grabbed the woman and put her between both the vehicles on his driveway to shield her from potentially additional gunfire erupting from the park
Other neighbours like Tiina Rieger and Kim Therrien said when they heard the gunfire they thought it might have been duck hunters out in the nearby wetlands of Cook’s Bay to the west
“It’s literally too close to home,” Rieger said
adding she was worried for her own kid’s safety

Step into Rooster’s — the new Stove & Co
restaurant that opened in the former home of the beloved Keswick Tavern — and the first thing you notice is the TV
It’s so big that when the brightness of whatever’s on screen changes
the light levels in the bar change with it
they had that big TV tuned to a Premier League game
men in red and men in white playing on a field so green you almost felt like you could jump right through the screen and roll around on it
But Rooster’s isn’t a sports bar. Not really. Not any more than it is an English pub (even though it serves a decent shepherd’s pie) or a cocktail bar (even though they make their own ginger soda for the Dark & Stormy and sling dirty freezer martinis with blue-cheese-stuffed olives). It is, from the bones out, a Stove & Co. restaurant
which means that it isn’t any one thing entirely but is actually everything
which has long been Stove & Co.’s best trick for attracting fans
