The LaSalle Police Service is going to have an officer at the Vollmer Centre in the town every week in an effort to engage more with the public
the police service says an officer will be stationed at the complex every Monday from 9 a.m
Constable Alaina Atkins says this was started by an officer who wanted to give the public a chance to interact with police on a weekly basis
they may not always have the opportunity to chat with us
So this is an opportunity for residents to come by and just say if they had a question that may not be an emergency or an emergency question that they can still be able to ask us in a positive engagement level," she says
The booth is not intended to report criminal allegations or anything that would require follow-up or a potential investigation
Police say those types of events should be reported to officers at headquarters at 1880 Normandy St
or by calling the non-emergency line at 519-969-5210
Atkins says any concerns can be brought forward to the officer that's at the community information booth
"We will do our best to disseminate it to the proper department or officer
and the officer at the booth will be able to relay that information," she says
Police say there will be a steady rotation of different officers each week
and there will be a wide range of literature on various topics available

Three new pedestrian signals are now installed and ready for use along Front Road in LaSalle at the intersections of Bouffard Road
These new signals are designed to enhance pedestrian safety by allowing safe crossing and are similar to those found at the bridge over Turkey Creek on Sprucewood Avenue and also over the creek on Matchett Road
Pedestrian signals are being used instead of Pedestrian Crossovers (PXOs) due to the high volume
This decision ensures the safety of all road users
The pedestrian control signal will display the 'walk' sign
Traffic must remain stopped until the light turns green again
even if the pedestrian has already crossed

LaSalle has been named as one of the municipalities that may be granted Strong Mayor Powers
but I want to be clear — this is not a tool I intend to use
While I understand the Province's reasoning — particularly in communities facing gridlock or struggling to meet housing targets — I don’t believe that applies to LaSalle
We’ve already been proactive in building homes
We’re aligned with many of the same goals the Province has set out
and we will continue working with them to achieve those outcomes
my leadership style — and the way our Council operates — is rooted in collaboration
each bringing their own perspectives and experiences to the table
That diversity of thought makes our decisions stronger and has helped build a sense of trust both among Council and within our community
while some may choose to fully embrace Strong Mayor Powers
I believe our current governance model works — and
We’ll continue to work with the Province in a respectful and constructive way to serve LaSalle’s best interests
I also believe strongly in democracy and the importance of ensuring all voices are heard
The people of LaSalle had their say in the 2022 municipal election
They chose who they wanted to represent them — and I don’t believe it would be right to silence those voices by centralizing authority
It’s important to note that municipalities cannot decline or opt out of being granted Strong Mayor Powers
if these powers come into effect for LaSalle on May 1st
I plan to delegate that authority back to our CAO and Council members
This will allow us to continue leading our community in the collaborative

A member of LaSalle Town Council has passed away following a health-related illness
the town announced Councillor Sue Desjarlais died Monday
While she did not reveal the exact cause of death
LaSalle Mayor Crystal Meloche says Desjarlais had been sick for some time
but it progressed quicker than anyone expected
and they weren't prepared for this outcome at this time
Meloche says Sue was a very passionate and dedicated person
and really about the community as a whole," she says
"She was involved in so many different organizations
She really had a big heart and really cared and wanted to see the community thrive and do better."
"Councillor Desjarlais was a dedicated and compassionate public servant who served our community with unwavering integrity
Her passing is a tremendous loss not only to the council but to the entire LaSalle community."
"She will be remembered with great respect
Councillor Desjarlais served the town for nearly 20 years
Desjarlais was also active with several organizations
Park Homestead and a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland
and she was a long-time supporter of Community Living Essex County
where she once held the role of board president
Mayor Meloche says Sue loved what she did and loved being part of the town
"One thing you can say about Sue is she cared a lot about the town
but she cared even more about her family and friends
So our heart goes out to her family and friends
and I know this has to be truly difficult on them at this time," she says
Flags at all municipal buildings will be lowered to half-staff in her honour

An emotional night for LaSalle council as they went through their first meeting without one of their beloved councillors
The Town announced earlier this week that long-time councillor, Sue Desjarlais, died Monday.
LaSalle mayor Crystal Meloche told AM800 News that Desjarlais had been sick for some time
and they weren't prepared for this outcome
Councillor Desjarlais was first elected to town council in 2006
She was also active with several organizations
and a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland
The meeting on Tuesday night saw an emotional start as mayor Meloche spoke about Desjarlais through tears about how much she will be missed
A slideshow was also shown featuring photos of Desjarlais alongside members of the public and her fellow council friends
I want to take a moment to acknowledge a profound loss in our community
We are deeply saddened by the passing of councillor Sue Desjarlais."
Her passion for community was evident in everything she did."
An obituary for Desjarlais states that visiting will be Saturday, April 26, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Families First on Dougall Avenue.
A Memorial Celebration of Sue's life will be held on Sunday
at Signature Tributes Event Centre at 1 p.m
LaSalle Mayor Crystal Meloche is adding her voice to the chorus of local officials that have come out against the expansion of strong mayor powers
the Ford government announced the expansion of strong mayor powers to leaders in 169 more municipalities
The powers give mayors the ability to override some council decisions
The province says expanding the powers starting May 1 will allow municipalities to build infrastructure and homes faster
Meloche says she realizes the town cannot decline or opt out of the powers
is to be able to delegate that authority back to the CAO
and back to members of council the way it currently is now because I personally believe in the democratic process," said Meloche
"I think we had an election for a reason
we have seven people sitting around that horseshoe for a reason
and I believe everyone's voices should be heard and each vote matters."
The deadline to provide feedback to the province was April 16 and Meloche says she personally reached out to Premier Doug Ford informing him of her position
any mayor that comes along can make those changes
so it'll be interesting to see what the province has to say
I know the discussion period is kind of closed
and so we'll wait to hear what the next steps are," said Meloche
Meloche says she's cautious about being too vocal on speaking out
"At the end of the day I need to work with the province," she said
I apply to them to get some assistance with some of our development
so I'm not looking to destroy our relationship with them
but I want them to absolutely know where we stand on this subject."
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens was granted strong mayor powers in 2023
Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff was also granted the powers in 2023 and sent two letters to the province in opposition
however the municipality was still added to the legislation

Last year’s WFCU Egg Drop saw rain and chilly weather
but organizers found a way to beat the wet weather this year
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentThe fourth annual egg drop at the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex in LaSalle usually has three egg drops in categories for children age two to 10 to gather eggs off the field once they’re dropped from a helicopter.

But with the clouds turning ominous and rain already falling, organizers merged all three age groups for one giant drop featuring 800 children scrambling across the field picking up plastic eggs.
“It was a bit of touch and go here,” said Beth Anne Prince, manager of community investment at WFCU, which organized the event.
“It was a fantastic crowd. … It only took two days to sell out. We ended up doing one drop and we had all 800 children out on the field. And it was a huge success.”
Indeed, the kids didn’t seem bothered by the rain, perhaps because the temperature wasn’t as low as last year, about 16 C at drop time, so they focused on racing across the field gathering up eggs.
Afterwards, the eggs are exchanged for chocolate Easter bunnies and activity guides at the organizing tent.
The event costs participants nothing, said Prince. The idea is just to hold a family event.
“There’s no cost for entry. … It’s part of our WFCU credit Union’s Inspire program. We do things for the community, to bring families together, to entertain, to educate, and it’s something that we give back to the communities that we serve.
About 75 volunteers pitched in to make the event happen, she said.
Police in LaSalle are cracking down on off-road vehicles using public roads and trails due to an increased number of complaints
Police in the town are reminding residents about using dirt bikes
and other off-road vehicles (ORVs) on roads and public property
These types of vehicles are prohibited from being operated within the town other than on private property
Constable Alaina Atkins says since the weather has been getting nicer
we've had more reports to the police about people riding dirt bikes on public trails
"Some private property includes farm fields
and we have a lot of farm fields in LaSalle
Farmers do grow their crops throughout the year
they could be facing criminal liability and face charges under the criminal code," she says
Anyone operating their dirt bike or ATV may face possible charges under the Highway Traffic Act
or the Trespass to Property Act if on private property without permission

UNBC and LaSalle College Vancouver (LCV) have reached a series of collaborative agreements as part of a new partnership that expands academic pathways and sees LCV serve as the Vancouver location for UNBC's Master of Business Administration program
Prince George, B.C. – The University of Northern British Columbia has partnered with LaSalle College Vancouver (LCV) to broaden academic pathways and enhance educational opportunities for students at both institutions
The new academic partnership facilitates seamless transitions for students from LCV to UNBC and will introduce innovative academic offerings in Vancouver, incorporating LCV’s focus on design with the sustainable business and economic development focus of the programs in UNBC’s Faculty of Business and Economics.
LCV now serves as the Vancouver location for UNBC’s 21-month MBA program
“This new partnership is part of reimagining how we educate in a changing world
by offering unique and expanded pathways for students to pursue both their undergraduate and graduate studies,” says UNBC President Dr
“By offering the opportunity for students to ladder into UNBC’s Bachelor of Commerce program and bringing the University’s MBA program to the College’s Vancouver campus
we are harnessing the energy of our collaborative network
we are enhancing an innovative and supportive learning and knowledge generation ecosystem that will empower future leaders and drive regional growth."
Under a new pathway agreement, students who complete the Associate of Arts (AOA) degree at LCV and are then admitted to the Bachelor of Commerce with a major in General Business at UNBC will be able to transfer directly into the third year of the Bachelor’s degree program
This collaboration will offer a seamless academic transition for students aiming to advance their studies after successfully completing the accelerated 18-month AOA degree program in Vancouver
“This alliance is about more than just articulating students from a two-year program into a four-year degree program in business
This is seen as a strategically important move for the UNBC Bachelor of Commerce program as we lean into teaching sustainable business and economic development,” says UNBC Faculty of Business and Economics Dean Dr
graduates need to be able to visualize and design that future and that is where we see the strengths of LCV really supporting UNBC’s programs
LCV’s focus on design thinking will help to enhance the design discussion in UNBC classes
Through this collaboration we believe that UNBC and LCV will be leading the way in designing a sustainable future for B.C
“LaSalle College Vancouver and UNBC are a great fit as partners
We share a common vision of providing quality education
fostering student success and an emphasis on education for sustainable development,” says LCV Chief Academic Officer Dr
“We know that graduates from our Associate of Arts program will feel ‘at home’ in the third year of UNBC’s Bachelor of Commerce program
They are accustomed to small class sizes and one-on-one attention from their instructors
we have structured our program in a way that ensures they will have the academic preparation they need to succeed in further study.”
The partnership between LCV and UNBC is a significant step in expanding academic opportunities for students
reinforces the value of collaborative educational efforts and is the beginning of a broader collaboration between the two institutions
