Thaumatrope Theatre brings a new production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing to Toronto’s Lawrence Park South on Saturday
Co-directed by Isabella Cesari and Caitlyn Grant
embodying the young company’s innovative spirit and commitment to accessibility
arose out of expedience: “Believe it or not
Thaumatrope Theatre was born because ‘Company Name’ was a required field on an application form.” Along with a friend
with support from the University of Toronto’s Centre for Drama
This unexpected demand for a name proved serendipitous
as the acceptance of their application led to mounting their first production
a one-act workshop called Miss You ‘Til Tomorrow
the team realized they wanted to continue creating shows on their own terms
launched the company officially with Lizzie: The Musical
Thaumatrope Theatre’s mission is simple: to “provide opportunities for student
and early-career artists to take on leadership roles and get performance experience in a format that fits alongside school
The company’s vision is to foster a collaborative and supportive environment
through which early-career artists can be ambitious
Building on the success of last summer’s outdoor performance of Twelfth Night
the company decided to embrace the challenge of staging another Shakespearean play outdoors this year
“We love working with constraints and turning them into opportunities for creativity
so being outdoors gets us thinking about how we can make the staging lively
and how we can work with the actors to make the story vivid and engrossing – with basically none of the trappings you’d have in a traditional theatre space!”
the team embraced the idea of delivering a “2000s sporty interpretation” of Much Ado About Nothing
The beloved comedy revolves around two pairs of lovers and a series of misunderstandings
where soldiers return from war and are welcomed by the local governor
Claudio (Talfryn Quiring) and Hero (Josie Dolin)
their happiness is threatened by the scheming Don John (Adrian Muhajarine)
who tricks Claudio into believing that Hero has been unfaithful
Beatrice (Chi-Chi Onuah) and Benedick (Brendan Rush)
are witty and sharp-tongued individuals who engage in a “merry war” of words: constantly bantering
and the play concludes with a joyful double wedding that celebrates love
Rounding out the diverse cast are Andrew Easterling
A compelling rationale for staging Much Ado About Nothing is to highlight its exploration of gender relations and expectations
“thorny issues that are as relevant today as they were in Shakespeare’s time” – and which are at the forefront of its comedy
“Masculine bravado and misogyny drive Hero’s tragedy
as much as their subversion drives the fantastic banter between Beatrice and Benedick,” Cesari notes
“We like to think that Much Ado‘s optimistic ending is also important in a time where our world seems to reward outrage and antagonistic attitudes
we’re thrilled to be presenting a play that ends on a note of forgiveness
and celebration.” The company hopes that Toronto audiences “will see a reflection of issues they may have encountered in their real lives
and leave with the sense that it is possible to push back against these issues by building positive relationships with those that love and support you.”
the choice of Much Ado About Nothing was also driven by the play’s “character-centric nature”
It does not rely on elaborate sets or costumes
which makes it perfect for a park setting “where you kind of can’t have those things!” Indeed
unique to Thaumatrope Theatre’s outdoor productions is their use of wide-open park spaces – rather than even a stage
or other purpose-built outdoor performance space
And the support of the City of Toronto’s Arts in the Park permit program allows them to offer performances that are free of charge
which is “so important to us,” Cesari emphasizes
This approach not only makes theatre accessible
but also evokes the tradition of Elizabethan “scrappy
roving troupes that would set up in towns across England to perform for local audiences”
audiences can arrive any time after 6:00 pm and should bring something to sit on
along with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
While the one-night-only performance is free to enjoy
To help offset the cost and support of future programming
the company will have merchandise on hand for purchase
the future of Thaumatrope Theatre looks bright
as the company prepares to announce their first full season in 2024-2025
“The show lineup will be announced later this month
as well as auditions for our Fall production!” smiles Cesari
“The company is eager to continue growing and building relationships with audiences
And that’s something worth making much ado about
Thaumatrope Theatre will present Much Ado About Nothing at Lawrence Park South on Saturday, July 13, 2024, 2024 6:30 pm ET. Visit thaumatropetheatre.com for more information

known for appearing in Google Home ads and for its renovation from a traditional single-family home to a three-unit modern building
The home at 68 Burnaby Boulevard in Lawrence Park South is for sale at $3.5 million
The triplex at 68 Burnaby Boulevard was renovated but used the brick from the original home
The sleek, minimalist home served as a backdrop for a series of Google Home ads featuring home remodeling gurus The Scott Brothers
and a ground-floor two-bedroom unit — could be yours
south-facing windows bathe the living room in light
There is also potential to finish a fourth, 300-square-foot bachelor suite, now incomplete in the rear portion of the basement, David Rad, Broker with Sage Real Estate
Lift and slide doors on the third level open to a private cantilevered terrace
The buyer could be an investor who takes on the existing tenants
and the seller as a tenant until they finish their new project
or it could be someone who wants to move in to the main unit and keep the two existing tenants
The rent income from the units would help cover the mortgage
Minimalist stairs fit into the design of the home
Architectural firm Studio JCI completed the renovation in 2014 with interior design from Mason Studio. There is a focus on natural light, ventilation, and access to the outdoors for every unit, according to Studio JCI.
The main residence has large south-facing windows in the living and dining area with views of the street and surrounding tree canopy
The kitchen is modern with an open concept to the living room
The existing brick from the older home was restored and reused "to create an authentic material palette that blends in with its neighbours."
The home was designed to fit into the neighbourhood
There are separate entrances for each of the units accessed from a façade with oiled cedar cladding
The property also has a double garage in the back and a parking pad in the front
This type of renovation was the first of its kind on the street, and after it was complete, the home was featured in DWELL Magazine and also in ArchDaily
The bathroom has a nice-sized tub and shower
The home could make a great income property for a family or potentially for a few people to come together to buy in Toronto's tough market
"The young professional buyers are starting to get wiser and wiser and look at options like this," said Rad
The home features interior design from Mason Studio
in a beautiful home with their own private outdoor space and have income from the asset that pays down their mortgage
and that's what makes this property great."

there's no denying that there are some pockets in the city that are more affordable than others
due to the extraordinary growth in home prices over the past few years
Canada's largest city has now been recognized as one of the most expensive cities in the world
some pockets in the city that are more expensive than others
the cost of homes varies immensely from neighbourhood to neighbourhood
If you're curious which of Toronto's 144 neighbourhoods are the most expensive, Toronto realtor and chartered accountant Scott Ingram has done some digging and found out where exactly these pricey pockets are by looking at average detached home prices by neighbourhood for all of 2020
Ingram said there are 15 neighbourhoods with the highest average sold price in 2020
New to this year's list are Kingsway South
and Edenbridge-Humber Valley have been bumped from the top 15
In the case of Trinity-Bellwoods and Playter Estates-Danforth
Ingram says those are low detached transaction places
so it's likely a few expensive transactions brought them up last year
"Of the 136 neighbourhoods with at least one detached sale in 2020
107 of them now have an average price of over $1 million," said Ingram
there are only 29 neighbourhoods left under $1 million."
Toronto's prestigious Bridle Path retained its 'Most Expensive Neighbourhood' crown
Ingram says for each year he's made this list (since 2016)
this neighbourhood has always ranked at the top
Ingram says the average price in Bridle Path-Sunnybrook-York Mills(BPSYM) reached the $5 million mark again
It had four of the 12 sales in the city last year that were above $10 million and also recorded the most expensive sale at $23 million
you can see how those sales would bring up the average
The median detached sold price was "only" $4,345,000 (up from a median of $4.3M in 2019)
As for the average price of a detached home in BPSYM in 2020
Ingram said a 2+2 bedroom and 4-bathroom house on an 80' x 130' lot sold for within $20,000 of the area's $5,104,000 average price
The listing touts it as an "Architecturally Stunning Custom Home" with "Top Quality & Utmost Attention To Detail." It was built in 2010
If you're curious what the least expensive neighbourhoods are
"It's interesting to look back and see as recently as 2015 the number of neighbourhoods with detached houses averaging $750K or less (54) was about the same as the number of million-dollar neighbourhoods (52)
Now with Mount Dennis jumping from $653K to $780K in the last year
there are no neighbourhoods under $750K," said Ingram
there are now more neighbourhoods over $2 million (32) than there are left under $1 million (29)
Given that home prices in the Toronto area are expected to increase 11% to $1,035,000 in the fourth quarter of 2021
it'll be interesting to see how this brings up the average price in Toronto's different neighbourhoods
we will see a new area make it on to Ingram's list in 2021

This three-storey home nestled on Lytton Boulevard with a pool, basketball court and heated terrace just listed on the market this month for $9 million

there’s a whole outdoor kitchen and a great awning that comes out to cover the patio,” said Grosman
The main level of the home boasts a gourmet kitchen with marble detailing
a large island and secondary kitchen service
The bright family room with 22-foot ceilings gives access to a terrace with heated floors
There’s an elevator with all-floor access just steps away
Grosman says the family room “gives off that feeling” of a great room
an area in a house that combines several roles
“We’re finding it’s happening much more in design these days
where a lot of people are sitting there talking
kids may be on their computer doing their homework or you’re entertaining in these spaces,” he said
The second level hosts three spacious bedrooms
The primary bedroom with custom millwork features a bio-flame fireplace and a spa-like steam shower
The third level is fitted with two additional bedrooms and a den that could be used as an office space
The spacious walkdown lower level with heated hardwood floors features a bar

basketball court and fully equipped outdoor kitchen
A nearby heated terrace makes for the perfect outdoor seating area
While the home would work for many different buyers
it is best suited for a central Toronto family looking for a new build
“Parents want a central hub for their families,” he said
pointing to the many amenities of the home
“They want a place where their kids will have a swimming pool and a great place to entertain.”
it’s located in “the centre of all the action,” being situated in Lytton Park
15 minutes from downtown Toronto and 10 minutes from Hwy
The modern home is also in walking distance to a variety of schools
“It really is one of midtown’s best communities.”

With the news that a sprawling 100-acre revitalization is taking place just south of the Yorkdale Shopping Centre
many investors are wondering if this is the next up-and-coming neighbourhood to invest in
Could it make this sleepy pocket that boasts great subway access a major destination for residents from all over
Based on the size of this development, we decided to compare it to Toronto’s Regent Park revitalization
which is credited with transforming much of downtown’s east end
Spearheaded by the Daniels Corporation
the Regent Park project revitalized a crumbling
post-war housing development with high-crime rates and a lack of community resources
Now one of downtown Toronto’s most popular communities
the transformation has added residential space
retail and state-of-the-art community facilities
It’s received numerous awards in the process
including BILD’s Community of the Year and Best International Neighbourhood Renewal Program from the International Journal of Neighbourhood Renewal
With Regent Park’s transformation well underway, we’re now looking towards North York’s own version of this successful regeneration: the Lawrence Heights Revitalization. Lawrence Heights
the neighbourhood immediately south and west of Yorkdale Shopping Centre
currently shares many features with the former version of Regent Park; both low-income housing developments created in the 1950’s
disconnected from their urban surroundings
with little walkability or public realm appeal
Now developers Context and Metropia have turned their attention to this challenged North York community
also boasts excellent access to subway stations

A new measure is being used to rank Toronto's neighbourhoods – the "neighbourhood equity score"
which combines ratings for economic opportunity
participation in decision-making and physical surroundings
change the way Toronto's 140 neighbourhoods are evaluated by city staff when they decide where to direct services
The new rankings are likely to set off a lively debate about the city's role in providing social services
and what areas of the city are most deserving of extra funding and attention – all against the backdrop of the fall civic election The new measures were developed in conjunction with researchers at St

The Lawrence Art Guild will host its 60th Art in the Park this year on Saturday and Sunday
which began as an event to showcase local artists
is now a two-day event with more than 125 artists from across the country
food trucks with both savory and sweet treats
Although much of Art in the Park has changed
one thing has remained consistent: Lawrence painter Celia Smith has participated in every Art in the Park since the mid-60s
except once when she was out of the country
Smith’s paintings alone are reason enough to visit
she is able to capture the curiosity of a cat
the shyness of deer or the grace of a bird
Some of Smith’s other works capture the essence of a landscape
whether it is the geometry of houses found on a hillside in her native country of Spain
Visitors to Art in the Park will be able to find Smith within her booth
Hixson is returning for her second year at Art in the Park
and this year she is Art in the Park’s featured artist.
Her current body of work is an exploration of comfort
She not only uses subject matter to convey this emotion
light and texture to visually describe how comfort feels
cozy furniture and her mother’s blanket are all motifs which show up in her oil paintings
You can find Emma in booth number 91.
These artists with more than 125 others will be at Art in the Park in Lawrence

Many gathered for a women's rights rally in South Park on Saturday
There was no lightning in the sky during Lawrence’s rainy women’s rights rally on Saturday
but you might have heard a thunderous chant at the end: “We’re not going back!”
It came from the dozens of people leaving South Park carrying their umbrellas
lawn chairs and signs — a slogan that has defined Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign
and a slogan that Johnson County LGBTQ+ activist Jae Moyer said all Kansans should take to heart
“I want all of those people to know that if you don’t stand for unity
then we are going forward and we will not bring you with us because we are not going back,” Moyer said
Many people brought umbrellas and ponchos were provided at the women’s rights rally on Saturday
Saturday’s rally featured quite a few notable women in the area’s political scene: state Rep
the incumbent running to represent District 2; Melinda Lavon
chair of the Douglas County Democratic Party; Dena Sattler
candidate for Kansas Senate District 3; Brooklynne Mosley
presumed representative-elect for Kansas House District 46; Ursula Minor
president of the Lawrence chapter of the NAACP; Dr
Many of them urged the audience to support Democratic candidates and highlighted the challenges that individuals across America face in accessing abortion care and making their own reproductive health care choices
“Others here like me remember life before Roe v
“Women lost their lives because safe reproductive health care was unavailable.”
Francisco added that while Kansans voted to keep abortion legal in the state after Roe v
there is still a lot of work to be done to address economic and health care barriers
“The health rankings report shows Kansas ranking 32nd in the nation for how well our health care system is working for women,” Francisco said
“Statistics for maternal health show that women of color face far more challenges in delivery.”
Minor said that Black women’s maternal rights include the right to safe and healthy pregnancies and births and the right to make decisions about their bodies
Black women face higher rates of maternal mortality than other women in the United States,” Minor said
“… A recent study projected that abortion bans would increase the number of U.S
pregnancy-related deaths by 39% for African American women.”
warned about Project 2025 — a multi-faceted plan devised by the Heritage Foundation for the next Republican president to overhaul the executive branch — and what it could mean for women’s reproductive rights
“It’s a 900-page blueprint for Donald Trump to enact scary policies
particularly for women,” Castle said
Castle said that bringing the decision of abortion back to the states was something that Trump was proud of
but the abortion policies in states like Texas and Oklahoma have few or no exceptions for rape or incest
“We’re hearing these horror stories emerging of the consequences of these Trump abortion bans,” Castle said
“Women being denied health care because doctors are afraid they’ll go to jail if they treat pregnant women
Women are dying as they are waiting to receive health care.”
“We are not going back!” were handed out at a women’s rights rally on Saturday
But Saturday’s rally wasn’t just about the high stakes — it was also about optimism and looking ahead to a brighter political future
Mosley said that when she thinks about progress
And it isn’t going to stop anytime soon
“There was a time where the destination was just wearing pants
“There was a time where the destination was just having your name on the ballot
and now we’re occupying offices and having our perspective at the table.”
and we’re gonna be able to do that on Tuesday,” Mosley said
Ballard said that women have voted the most in federal elections
she said that’s because the people didn’t have a vote — only the Supreme Court did
“We were hoping it was going to stay the same
but we didn’t have a vote,” Ballard said
“They took it away and sent it back to the state
they gave Kansas the opportunity to challenge it and oh no
Ashley Bloom of LMH Health speaks at a rally on Saturday
Bloom said that no politician has any place telling a woman or a family when
where or how they should raise their family or grow a family
“We have people in our community who fear that if (Project) 2025 comes to fruition
that they will no longer be able to be the parents to their children
and so it is our job to protect them and to stay together.”
Everyone at the rally was gathered to fight for women’s reproductive freedoms and affordable health care for everyone
and she urged them all to make their voices heard long after the crowd at South Park had dispersed
“Here’s what we’ll do,” Sattler said

Artist Kent Smith created this poster of South Park for the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
Creators of a new art project want to help people appreciate the beauty of Lawrence parks and green spaces — and even bring a bit of that beauty indoors
The Lawrence Public Library partnered with several organizations — Lawrence Magazine
the Kansas Land Trust and the Douglas County Community Foundation — to create postcards and posters for the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
The artwork is incorporated into the library’s summer reading program and is also for sale
with the proceeds benefiting the artists and the library
Artist Matthew Lord created this poster of the Baker Wetlands for the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
said the idea for the posters came from the National Parks “See America” posters commissioned in the 1930s and ’40s by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project
who writes for Lawrence Magazine and is also a member of the library’s Friends & Foundation board
said that for her the idea to do something similar in Lawrence originated in 2015
when she hiked in all the state parks as part of a different project
“It really underlined for me how much outdoor beauty there is right around us,” Gage said
“And you don’t have to go to a national park or something far away; it’s often in your own state or your own backyard.”
Artist Lisa Grossman created this poster of the Riverfront Park for the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
which has the same owner as the Journal-World
asked local artists to create an artwork of their favorite Lawrence park or green space in the spirit of the National Parks “See America” posters
The artists created vivid and sometimes whimsical depictions of 11 locations
The projects is part of the library’s summer reading program
according to a news release about the program
Participants in the Lawrence Public Library’s reading program
as well as the Eudora and Baldwin City programs
can pick up or print off the nature journal
The Kansas Land Trust and the Douglas County Community Foundation created the journals to celebrate the KLT’s 30-year anniversary
summer reading program participants will explore local outdoor spaces
including some of those included in the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
the library’s director of development and community partnerships
said in the release that this year is the perfect year to get outside and enjoy local parks and green spaces
Artist Leslie Kuluva created this poster of Watson Park for the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
The project comes at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has closed city recreation centers
canceled sports leagues and generally limited gatherings and activities
Gage said that more people seem to be using the city’s parks and other outdoor public spaces than ever before
She said although work on the project began last summer
“I think it’s definitely given a new meaning to how important it is for us to have public outdoor spaces and how much of a difference that makes in our health and well being,” Gage said
“It kind of ended up being very timely
Artist Stephanie Lane Gage created this poster of the Mutt Run dog park for the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
A set of 11 postcards can be purchased for $15, and the posters can be purchased for $25 to $45, depending on the size, on the project’s website
Gage said about 100 postcard sets and about 100 posters have been sold in the first three weeks of sales
and the artwork would be for sale through the end of August
The posters will also be on display for that same period at the Lawrence Public Library
Artist Astrid Mier y Teran created this poster of the Haskell Medicine Wheel for the Lawrence Parks & Green Spaces Art Project
LAWRENCE — Farmland in eyesight of Interstate 41 twice poised to become a megawarehouse instead could become a $215 million, mixed-use neighborhood intended to rival the Titletown District and Howard Commons Activity Complex
Lawrence Town Center would transform 153 acres north of Freedom Road between I-41 and Williams Grant Drive into 110 homes
recreation spaces and land for commercial development
The neighborhood's centerpiece would be a 10-acre public park with a six-acre lake complete with a small island accessible by the public
Boardwalk Development Co., a subsidiary of Kaukauna-based Milk Source
has applied to the town for the approvals necessary to pursue the project
An extensive public review of the proposal is expected to begin in March
said Lawrence Town Center really emerged from those earlier proposals and residents' suggestions for what should be developed on the 153-acre site: More housing
He said the development team started with that list
we've got an opportunity to reimagine what this could be
What would be a long-term benefit on a great site?'" Ostrom said
"We came up with building a sense of place and making it a destination."
Drawing inspiration from those neighborhoods
Ostrom said Boardwalk loaded up the plan with a variety of amenities that cater to a variety of interests
the administrator for the town of more than 6,700 residents
"It certainly would have the aspects of a town center or a downtown-type feel if the plan comes together in the way they envision it," Wetzel said
"It's certainly unlike anything else we have in the town or in our corridor."
The more than 150 housing units included in plans put the emphasis on their front porches in order to give the single-family and townhouse areas more of a neighborhood feel and to encourage residents to get to know their neighbors
He said the single-family homes will range from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet in size and include a mix of two-story and ranch style homes with attached garages
The smaller footprints will enable Boardwalk to load the homes with high-demand amenities and appliances while offering buyers a lower purchase price
He said Lawrence Town Center will also include an outlot where residents can park their recreational vehicles
boats and other large items so they don't have to in their driveways
Lawrence Town Center will include several mixed-use buildings in the initial phases that will create first-floor space for retailers like cafes
But the project's site plan also sets aside a large amount of land closer to Freedom Road for future commercial development
Ostrom said as people move into the residences in the development
it will help Boardwalk make the case to retailers
commercial businesses and others to locate in the area
The future commercial development space along Freedom Road could include uses like a health clinic
we'll be able to attract blue chip commercial amenities like a great coffee shop
restaurants and upscale retail," Ostrom said
Lawrence Town Center will take a decade or more to completeOstrom said Lawrence Town Center will not spring up overnight
but said it likely will take a decade to carefully build out the entire neighborhood and for the landscaping and green spaces to mature and develop
the company can move faster on building and if demand softens
it can slow down the pace and use the acreage as farmland
"We want to invest enough up front that it becomes better over time
so that in 40 years a future generation will look at this and see it as a special place," Ostrom said
Want to have your say on Lawrence Town Center
Here's the tentative timelineThe size and scope of the project means Lawrence residents will have several opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback as the town reviews and evaluates the proposal
Wetzel said those reviews should begin in March with preliminary consideration of a planned development district zoning request
A planned development district allows the town to review and approve the mix of residential
commercial and mixed-use buildings proposed for the site
There's a lot of moving parts and pieces to this," Wetzel said
"We'll take the time we need because there's a lot to this."
Here's the tentative timeline for town review:
