Maple Ridge Mayor Dan Ruimy says despite TransLink's financial challenges
the transit provider has a 2025 investment plan that will keep his priority project – bus rapid transit (BRT) to Langley – moving ahead
TransLink said the design work for its three BRT routes
The plan will also fund the largest increase in bus service since 2018
creating new routes and expanding service on its busiest routes
One of the new routes will be a weekend bus to Golden Ears Park
There is also a plan to add more passenger cars to the West Coast Express commuter trains
that run from Mission to Vancouver, stopping in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows
TransLink was facing a deficit of more than $600 million annually because of an operating funding shortage
This was caused primarily by declining fuel tax revenue
and fare increases being capped under the rate of inflation between 2020 and 2024
The new plan will fully fund TransLink operations until the end of 2027
and will cut the structural deficit by almost half thereafter
especially in the long term," said Ruimy of TransLink
but added the new plan addresses key priorities
the important thing is the continuation of planning for BRT," he added
Ruimy is on the Mayor's Council on Regional Transportation – one of 23 in municipal leaders in that group
He noted BRT is a complex planning project
He said an increase in bus service across the Lower Mainland should benefit all communities
and make it more viable for people to leave their cars at home
"Everything is moving forward," said Ruimy
"Any kind of extra service we can get allows the capacity to get more people to take transit
He's hopeful his city will be able to expand Golden Ears Way
from the north end of the bridge to 210 Street
This investment plan will be funded through several measures
including a $20 increase in property taxes for median households in 2025 and a fare increase of 14 cents for the average trip starting in July 2026
The province is also giving a one-time contribution of $312 million
and a commitment to a new revenue source by 2027
Langley-Haney Place BRT will establish a 22 km connection
It will be a connection between Willowbrook and Haney Place malls
reducing transit travel time by more than 40 per cent
It will also connect to the future Surrey-Langley SkyTrain at Willowbrook station
“Investing in transit means investing in the region’s economy and long-term growth," said Brad West
PoCo mayor and chair of the Mayor's council
"By expanding transit to under-served areas and to relieve overcrowding on our busiest routes
this investment plan sets us on a path to respond to the demands of a growing region and province.”

and identified as belonging to missing Maple Ridge woman Rebecca Harbowy
The Ridge Meadows RCMP reported Friday morning
The 36-year-old left Ridge Meadows Hospital on Nov
early into detoxing from drug use. Her family has been critical of the hospital letting her leave the facility on her own
She was last seen walking east on the Haney Bypass at Burnett Street in Maple Ridge at approximately 2:05 a.m
Police released few details about the discovery of the remains
The family told The News it was in a forested area
Distraught mother Debbie Harbowy is hopeful that an intense search of the area will lead to Rebecca
Police have searched the area since the remains were discovered in early April
The family is unsure where a search would be
but plan to appeal to police for more information
"I always felt in my heart she had passed away
because she hadn't contacted me," said Debbie
Rebecca's sister Rachel Bertoia posted videos on social media informing those who have tried to assist in finding Rebecca
and those who have been following the missing woman's case
She said there is a memorial at the 7-Eleven at the corner of Lougheed Highway and Haney Bypass
where there is a missing person sign the family posted
I think it would be really lovely for my mom to have people drop off flowers to her sign there," said Bertoia. "I would love for my mom to be able to see the love and support that I know that we have felt."
"I can't imagine being a mom losing a kid."
Rebecca was about eight hours into what doctors advised would be a three-day stay
but early the next morning she walked away
Her family believes she was confused and disoriented
She lived with her parents in the Yennadon area
Debbie had been sitting with her daughter until midnight
she got a call from the hospital that her daughter had left
driving the streets of Maple Ridge for hours
the family canvassed people in the hospital neighbourhood and searched the area
They obtained video showing Rebecca walking down River Road eastbound
near the Port Haney West Coast Express station at 1:46 a.m
A tipster saw a woman matching Rebecca’s description walking on the Haney Bypass at approximately 2 a.m
Another video showed her on the Haney Bypass at Burnett Street at 2:05 a.m.
A man said he almost hit a woman walking on Lougheed Highway near 240 Street
but the description of the woman having her hair up in a bun matched
they have learned nothing more about Rebecca's movements
Police and searchers combed roadsides and the edge of the Fraser River
Police say this continues to be an active investigation
and anyone with information which could help the Ridge Meadows RCMP you are encouraged to call the Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251 and refer to File # 2023-23402
The RCMP extended condolences to the family and friends of Rebecca Harbowy
community partners and volunteers for their assistance with this investigation thus far

Visitors to the Ridge Meadows Meadows Home Show were impressed with the size and quality of this year's event
Maple Ridge resident Camille Ellison has been to the home show for the past five years.
She thoroughly enjoyed the trades show as she is looking for a quote on a new deck
She was impressed by the amount of vendors.
Ethel St.Croix thought the home show was great.
"It brings everybody together," she said as she waited for her children who were on a ride called the Tornado
St.Croix believes Maple Ridge needs more events like this one
the more the people will come together," added St.Croix
She was excited to check out the trades portion later in the day
it's fun to check out the latest in home decor.
Some people were at the Family Festival just for the rides.
Sarvjeet Singh comes to the Family Fest every year
This year he was there with his two daughters and neice
who were enjoying the rides by Shooting Star Amusements.
For Elisha Shewchuk the carnival rides were the highlight as well.
Maple Ridge will celebrate its Japanese Canadian cultural legacy with the first annual Children’s Day Festival at the CEED Centre Neighbourhood House and Beckett Park on May 3
the Festival in early May honours the health and happiness of children with really colourful streamers in the shape of carp fish
that are suspended from bamboo poles or wires,“ explained Christian Cowley
executive director of the CEED Centre Society
spirited fish in accord with the legend of a carp that swam upstream to become a dragon
The koi-nobori streamers are meant to symbolize the desire for one’s children to become brave and strong individuals.”
CEED Centre president Martin Dmitrieff said the local festival features children’s activities such as origami folding
Japanese calligraphy and paper koi-nobori crafts that will be assisted by elders from Tonari Gumi
"We even have a few koi pinatas made by our local Seniors Activity Group under the guidance of artist in residence Colleen Brown," he said
This year’s festival will include a special ceremony to inaugurate the permanent mixed-media exhibit in the CEED Centre Neighbourhood House by an artistic team led by award-winning artist Cindy Mochizuki
a phrase taken from the preface of the History of Haney Nokai that is translated as ‘work in the good weather
There were approximately 230 farms in Maple Ridge alone
there are more than 230 porcelain figurines representing the families that lived on those farms
“We are extremely grateful for the support of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society for this project and the enthusiastic encouragement of the City of Maple Ridge," said Cowley
"It’s been a dream of mine for the past 21 years to restore the legacy of this building and help future generations of Nikkei find their identities here in Haney
The taiko troupe duo NoriNori and Komori will play an eclectic set of traditional and modern fusion pieces for the shamisen and taiko drum
The CEED Centre Neighbourhood House was built by the Nikkei community in 1930 as a one-room kindergarten on the grounds of the Haney Nokai
just about one in three residents in the area identified as Japanese Canadian
That all changed in 1942 with the Internment and forced uprooting of 22,000 Japanese Canadians away from the coast
"The purpose of the exhibit and the festival is to inform people of this history and to serve as a warning against future discriminatory policies," he said
this is a timely reminder to keep communities inclusive.“
The Children’s Day Festival will run from 10 a.m
to 2 p.m. at the CEED Centre Neighbourhood House and Beckett Park on south 223rd Street. Parking is limited so please consider alternative means

It's easy to see how the Ridge Meadows Home Show bills itself "The Everything Show," with a walk through the 300 booths inside the arenas at Planet Ice
and there's a huge mix of products and services to see and even sample
with local couple Jamie and Krista Nay there selling their wares for the first time
and has been to the show many times as a customer
but he was looking forward to letting his hometown neighbours sample his hot sauce as a first-time vendor
At the other end of the Home Show experience spectrum is Dave Sheppard
His father Jack was one of the originators of the show
which now draws more than 20,000 people through the weekend
Dave still enjoys showing off features on the latest grill they just got in stock
"We get of lot of people moving to town who don't know us
even through we've been in town 55 years," he said
Jennifer Haer of Bliss Mattresses was letting couples lay on the mattresses and incline them with a remote control
She said the outdoor family fest – with its entertainers
carnival treats and more – packs in people of all ages
so we get people coming out to enjoy the whole day," said Haer
it's nice to get out and meet our community."
Megan Rowland has been bringing her Scentsy scented products to the show for a decade
but said it's about more than making sales
so it's like a high school reunion," said Rowland
"And there's good traffic – it's a busy show."
the equivalent of 65 bathtubs full of invasive species were removed from a Pitt Meadows park over the weekend.
More than 10 cubic metres of invasive plant species including English ivy
and Himalayan blackberry were removed from the park by 30 community members of all ages
who was on council when Hoffmann Park was purchased from its original owner to become a public park
was one of those participating in the event
who added some extra cheer to the day," said Kerr.
Invasive plants were previously removed from the park on March 30
and native species planted April 21 and October 6 of last year.
"Participants didn’t just help restore a local park - they built connections
enjoyed the health benefits of spending time outdoors
and felt hope by experiencing the power we have when we come together," said Kerr
"Our activities are about more than the environmental impact we make on the day
and showing people they can make a difference."
Opportunities are ongoing to get involved at the new Grabenhorst Garden in Pitt Meadows

The province has put out a second call for energy sources
with an aim to power 500,000 new homes.
Energy Minister Adrian Dix and BC Hydro CEO Chris O'Riley were among the speakers in Victoria Monday (May 5) for the announcement
It followed B.C.'s first call out for new energy sources in April 2024 – the first call for power in 15 years – that resulted in 10 new renewable-energy projects
Dix said Monday's announcement had five key elements
firstly launching the second call for power for a target of up to 5,000 gigawatt-hours per year of energy from large
Innovative Clean Energy fund for a three-year call for new
made-in-B.C. clean-energy technologies that will combat climate change and create sustainable jobs
It also included exploring B.C.'s "power potential" through a request for expressions of interest for projects to deliver for peak demand periods and to provide back-up intermittent energy resources and partnering with innovators to deliver market-ready demand-side management technologies that help people and businesses save energy and money
"We're expecting this call to be equivalent to the first call of power in terms of gigawatt hours
a call for power that will be slightly different than the previous one
in that there will be no limits on individual projects," Dix said.
the announcement also included "streamlining connections to B.C.'s grid to enable new homes and businesses to access clean electricity faster and less expensively."
BC Hydro CEO Chris O'Riley said the Crown corporation remains focused on expanding B.C.'s electricity system to meet demand while also "ensuring security
The 2024 call for power is expected to power 500,000 homes and increase electricity supply by eight per cent
with the projects representing up to $6 billion in private capital spending throughout B.C.
the Energy Ministry said in the news release
Nearly all of the 2024 projects have First Nations majority ownership
the executive director of Clean Energy Association of B.C.
but all over Canada that First Nations are leading the clean-energy transition.
she built one of the first clean energy projects that were led by First Nations at a time when there was not very many."
after the first call for power in 2024, First Nations are the proponents of these utility-scale projects

Delta Police say a male who barricaded himself on a transit bus has been safely taken into custody
police were made aware of an incident on Annacis Island island where a male with a knife had barricaded himself on a transit bus
Police did not give the age of the male or the bus route/number
as the incident was still being investigated
Mike Whiteley said shortly after noon Sunday that the road closure at the Annacis Island Clivedon Avenue off-ramp had been re-opened
I am writing this letter in frustration regarding a reply I received from Maple Ridge City council (mayorcouncilandcao@mapleridge.ca) when I asked for the projected or estimated tax increase for the facility they have proposed to build – a new indoor pool and recreational facility at Hammond Stadium
and two baseball diamonds and set up for recreational activities on the land that is currently the Maple Ridge Golf Course
I cannot afford a tax increase of $1,200 yearly
This amount has been neither confirmed nor denied by Maple Ridge council – their reply was totally evasive and carefully worded to avoid giving me an estimated amount of the tax increase
which says nothing about the estimated tax increase
Certainly they have a budget for how much they are willing to pay
and how much they can and will increase the taxes to pay for it
both Pitt Meadows and New Westminster citizens have rejected similar facilities due to the exorbitant tax increase they would face
While all the promotional advertising by city council make the facilities look very appealing for residents
they never mention raising taxes to cover the expenses
The reply I got mentions exploring federal and provincial grants
History has shown that a government grants never come even close to paying for this type of facility
I'm guessing that the golf course brings in a significant income for the city
means the money has to come from somewhere
higher taxes will have to cover the loss of income
plus the cost of building the new facilities
add higher taxes to cover the new indoor pool and recreational facilities at Hammond Stadium

An early-morning fire on the water in Mission has caused the City of Mission to activate its Emergency Operations Centre
The derelict BC Ferry (Queen of Sidney) is on fire on the Fraser River
May 3 and a large plume of smoke could be seen coming from the vessel
Residents in the nearby area (Chester Street to 287 Street/South of Lougheed Highway) were advised to shelter in place to minimize exposure to any hazardous emissions
“if you reside in the surrounding vicinity
and turn off any ventilation systems that draw air from outside.”
The cause of the fire hasn't been determined
led by the RCMP in coordination with other responding agencies," the city said.
Mission RCMP say nothing indicates the fire was intentionally set but investigators haven't been able to board the vessel due to the hazardous nature of the smoke and its overall condition.
The Mission Fire Rescue Service (MFRS) and the Ministry of Environment (MOE) were actively managing the situation. Mission Search and Rescue was also called out to monitor the situation from the river
firefighters did not attack the fire but rather alerted several agencies including Coast Guard and BC Fisheries. The fire completely engulfed the old ferry which was decommissioned in 2000
According to an update from the city at 9:30 a.m., the blaze remained active but fire behaviour and smoke production were significantly reduced from the night before.
"At this time there is nothing to indicate the fire was intentionally set
although due to the hazardous nature of the smoke and the overall condition of the vessel
investigators have not been able to board the former ferry," Cpl
Harrison Mohr with Mission RCMP stated in a press release
The activation of the Emergency Operations Centre aims to coordinate efforts efficiently and ensure the safety of all affected individuals
Mayor Paul Horn told the Mission Record that “according to the fire chief
the shelter in place advisory has been removed
“We’re asking people to stay away from the area because it is very constrained and we need to make sure that first responders are not hampered,” said Horn
“The fire department has collected drone footage with thermal and liDAR imaging
That will help with investigation and also ensuring that they can monitor the state of the fire,” he added
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) will take over the site after the fire is extinguished.
The city has been working with the provincial and federal ministries of environment
as well as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans
the Coast Guard will send a vessel into the area to monitor soon and they have sent an air quality contractor to help monitor air quality in the area.
it continues to assess the incident and is prepared to act quickly if the situation changes
"An initial on-water assessment was conducted during the early stages of the incident
Another on-water assessment and an overflight occurred during daylight
with no pollution observed on the water," the CCG statement reads.
Horn added: “Mission City Council will continue to advocate for a more assertive approach to derelict vessels in our waterways
we wrote to the federal government and stated that we were not content to wait for this vessel to become a greater hazard
It is very unfortunate that those concerns have been realized and we will be pushing for provincial and federal agencies to learn from this example.”
Horn wrote that “there is no logic in waiting until pollution occurs and having to react to a much worse situation with the potential for devastating effects.”
CCG deputy commissioner of programs Marc Mes responded on Aug
saying a then recent assessment of the 'Bad Adventure' (ex-Queen of Sidney) determined the vessel was not posing a high risk that would require immediate action from the CCG.
The ship was in service for BC Ferries from 1960 to 2000 before it was sold to Robert and Gerald Tapp in 2002 when it was renamed Bad Adventure
the coast guard informed the ‘Bad Adventure’ owners of their responsibilities to properly maintain the vessel
