One moment, you think you’ve got everything conquered, and the next minute, it’s out of your hands and you can’t control it,” said Dawson. “It’s very much like how tonight went. It was back-and-forth all night.” The final count after the last ballot box was counted Tuesday was 18,431 votes for Dawson and 18,037 for Harris. Since 2021, New Brunswick’s largest federal riding had been represented by former Tory MP Jake Stewart, who didn’t reoffer in this election after reports surfaced of turmoil between him, his office staff, and riding association members. Monday’s federal vote marked the second time Dawson had run to replace Stewart in his political career. Dawson, a drywall contractor by trade, was first elected in the 2022 provincial byelection in the former Southwest Miramichi-Bay du Vin riding after Stewart entered federal politics. He was handily re-elected in the new Miramichi West riding last year. “Tonight feels like déjà vu from three years ago,” he said, reflecting on his 2022 victory. Harris – a former Miramichi city councillor – was the Liberal MLA for Miramichi Bay-Neguac from 2014 to 2021. She was a cabinet minister under former premier Brian Gallant and ran against Stewart in 2021, losing by 1,456 votes. “While the result wasn’t what we hoped for, I remain proud of the positive, people-focused campaign we ran together,” she posted on social media Tuesday morning. “Miramichi-Grand Lake will always be home, and I’ll continue to care deeply about the future of our communities. Let’s keep working together for a better tomorrow.” transmission or republication strictly prohibited This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic. Or sign-in if you have an account Progressive Conservative Miramichi West MLA Mike Dawson has officially resigned his seat in the provincial legislature to run for the federal Conservatives in the riding of Miramichi-Grand Lake Dawson stood inside the provincial legislature for a last time declaring himself a Fredericton “outsider,” while also highlighting animosity he had with his own party The move means Dawson again steps in to fill the shoes of Jake Stewart who abruptly announced earlier this month that he would no longer be running for re-election Dawson entered the provincial legislature in 2022 after winning a byelection called to fill Stewart’s Southwest Miramichi-Bay du Vin seat That was after Stewart made the jump from provincial to federal politics Dawson was then re-elected in October’s provincial election in the riding of Miramichi West a little bit of both,” Dawson said in speaking to reporters inside the provincial legislature on Tuesday Dawson said that people inside the federal Conservatives reached out to him to consider running federally saying there was a need to keep the Miramichi-Grand Lake federal seat Conservative blue while adding “there didn’t seem to be a whole lot of candidates popping up to run” with a federal election now just over a month away Dawson acknowledged that fellow MLA Kris Austin had also expressed interest in the job Dawson said Stewart supports his candidacy “And people will know in the near future,” he said Dawson’s farewell speech to the legislature included a nod to interim Progressive Conservative Leader Glen Savoie acknowledging he has a “difficult task ahead to unite” the provincial party and find a leadership successor “It would not come as a surprise to anyone that there has been tension between him and myself, the leader of the opposition,” Dawson said. He continued that the two have a “love language that’s not understood by many around us who are not from our region,” chalking it up to both Dawson and Savoie having Miramichi roots. “I get angry when I’m right, and the leader of the opposition gets angry when he’s wrong,” Dawson said. “So it’s safe to say we’ve often been angry at each other. “But he is a good man and I’m sure he’s up to the difficult task ahead, and I wish he and our party well in the future.” Dawson later elaborated to reporters that he took issue with what happened in the aftermath of October’s provincial election loss. He specifically complained that, last fall, several party members didn’t get notice to attend an annual general meeting held shortly after Blaine Higgs was defeated. “If the grassroots of the party aren’t getting invites to the AGM, that’s an issue, that’s a problem for the party,” Dawson said. Still, he told reporters that a provincial byelection is likely to return another Progressive Conservative MLA to Fredericton, a race that now must be called in the next six months. Meanwhile, Dawson’s speech had kind words for Premier Susan Holt. “Premier Holt is a good example that as Canadians we can disagree without being disagreeable, and I intend to take that approach with me when I move forward with my next challenge,” he said. Dawson called himself an “outsider in Fredericton” who spoke his mind “whether it suited the (former Progressive Conservative) premier or the leadership at the time.” “Many members of this house will know that my background is in construction, I’m a contractor, I know what hard work is, and what it means,” he said. “As a contractor, I believe that our nation needs a political renovation. Given my background in construction, I decided that this was a project I would bid on.” The federal Conservatives broke the news on social media Monday afternoon in a post with the headshots of eight new party candidates. It included Dawson in Miramichi-Grand Lake. Up until just months ago, the federal riding of Miramichi-Grand Lake was a riding that looked destined to be cemented Conservative blue as long as Stewart wanted to hold the reins. After winning four straight provincial elections, regardless of whether his party formed government or not, Stewart seamlessly transitioned to federal politics, grabbing his window in 2021 to make the jump. Stewart then made fast friends with Pierre Poilievre on the House of Commons finance committee, getting behind the federal party’s eventual leader at the ground level, with Poilievre traveling to New Brunswick as far back as 2021 to be the special guest at the Miramichi MP’s Christmas riding event. At one point, he was part of Poilievre’s inner circle of nine as caucus committee coordinator. But that upward trajectory recently derailed. The financial agent for Stewart’s riding association quit his post in January over allegations that he was mistreated by the Miramichi MP and his staff. There was an online fight with another former member of the MP’s constituency office team, and allegations that several other staffers had quit. Stewart was then accused of mocking a veteran party member in the riding for having a stroke. His local constituency office temporarily closed amid it all. As stories mounted, grabbing national attention, Stewart abruptly announced earlier this month that he would no longer be reoffering in a looming federal election. That’s as the federal Liberals have selected Lisa Harris, a political bulldog in her own right with three provincial election wins under her belt, as their candidate in the April 28 election. Harris lost to Stewart by fewer than 1,500 votes in 2021. Prior to Stewart, Miramichi-Grand Lake was won by the Liberals in both 2015 and 2019. 4 months agoDuration 5:07Last-ditch bid for Miramichi bypass road as bridge closure looms4 months agoNewsDuration 5:07The long-delayed Centennial Bridge shutdown may happen this year — with no alternate route in place for traffic. Stewart, a member of Blaine Higgs’s Progressive Conservative cabinet until he was dumped to the back benches after the 2020 election, won the fight, collecting 14,218 votes (43.7 per cent of all votes) to Harris’s 12,762 (39.3 per cent). It was the first election loss for Harris, who’s also been a municipal politician and was a cabinet minister in the Brian Gallant government. And now she’s back for a second try, but it won’t be a rematch. Stewart recently and abruptly announced he wouldn’t reoffer, citing the toll the job had taken on his health. But he also left under a cloud; he’d been publicly fighting with ex-constituency staff, and closed his office for a while because of unnamed “security concerns.” Another ex-Progressive Conservative MLA, Mike Dawson, has stepped in to fill Stewart’s shoes – again. Dawson entered the provincial arena by taking Stewart’s vacant seat, and was handily re-elected last year. And now, like Stewart, he wants to go federal. But despite multiple attempts to reach him for an interview – including two calls to his campaign manager Kelly Wilson that went unanswered, two unanswered emails to the federal Conservative headquarters, and two unanswered messages sent via social media – Dawson didn’t respond. The other candidates in Miramichi-Grand Lake are Green Matthew Ian Clark, and the NDP’s Josh Floyd. Harris’s push to win the riding will be harder this time around. Miramichi-Grand Lake was expanded slightly in a federal electoral boundaries redraw, adding communities dropped outside Fredericton and the parish of Waterborough, which was in the electoral district of Fundy Royal. Poll by poll results show the Conservative vote was strong in both areas, and would have expanded Stewart’s 2021 win to nearly 3,000 votes. But that isn’t deterring Harris, who, true to her character, is projecting strength. “I am the strongest voice in Miramichi-Grand Lake, and with my proven track record and commitment, dedication and hard work to whatever I’m doing, people can rest assured that they’re going to have an MP that is working hard on their behalf every day,” the mother and grandmother recently told Brunswick News. “I’m going to fight to protect jobs here in the community and grow the local economy. (Liberal Leader) Mark Carney is going to know where we are, who we are, and what our needs are.” Asked what she’s hearing most at the doors of her would-be constituents, Harris spoke about the trade war with the United States. “Voters, first of all, are, to be honest, thanking me for running and putting my name forward,” Harris said. “Then it goes into (U.S. President) Donald Trump and what’s happening – they’re afraid. They’re nervous of what’s going on. There are voters of every political stripe saying that this is such a serious time. This isn’t even a Liberal-Conservative race. It’s a Canadian sovereignty issue that is going to affect us in a way that we that we’ve never seen before. That’s the main thing that I’m hearing.” And beyond that? It’s about the hundreds of federal jobs in the riding, she said, and the fear that some might face the axe if the Conservatives win. “We’re seeing that (Conservative Leader Pierre) Poilievre is saying he’s going to cut federal public service jobs,” Harris said. “In the Miramichi, we have a lot of great federal jobs that we need to keep the economy running well here, and that’s one major issue I’m hearing.” Housing and affordability concerns are also often brought up, Harris said. But she’s also hearing about “a lack of representation” in the riding. “I’m hearing from different mayors and councils and groups that … no one has met with them, they haven’t had any direction or leadership. “And I think that’s my strength … I want to sit down with all levels of government and to find out what (are) the priorities? And how do we move projects forward in the quickest amount of time and … work together, because when one does well, we all do well.” It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Lawrence Burns of Miramichi at the Miramichi Regional Hospital surrounded by family he was the son of the late Lawrence and Shirley (Hubbard) Burns and we are at peace knowing that he is with them once again Wayne will be greatly missed by his daughter He had a special bond with his nieces and nephews Wayne began working in the electrical field and always said that he would retire when he stopped enjoying his work He enjoyed many years working locally as a Maintenance Electrician and after the mill’s closure he expanded his career across Canada where he thrived in many leadership roles His level of experience and ability to troubleshoot and find creative solutions to complex problems got him in the door at many companies but what made him stand out as a team leader were his undeniable people skills He always had time for every member of his team a trait he credited his father with teaching him He was fortunate to transform many of his professional connections into strong personal bonds over the years and many colleagues have become like family whether it be playing in his younger years with many locals still recounting stories of the great battles they witnessed him fight on the ice especially his “squad” the Chicago Blackhawks which he was a fan of since the age of three Perhaps his greatest enjoyment in sports was as a Coach in both minor hockey and baseball He enjoyed encouraging young people and helping them learn life’s lessons while providing them with a unique nickname along the way Coaching was one of his favourite leadership roles that he has ever occupied and he still kept in contact with his players many years later Wayne enjoyed golfing daily when his schedule allowed He was constantly striving to improve his game After he obtained a hole in one at the Miramichi Golf and Country Club in 2022 He also enjoyed spending time at the camp at the Upper Place Wayne and Darla were married in 1990 and built their home together from the ground up with techniques that are still regarded as “above and beyond” even by today’s standards They were true partners in life and in love Wayne was someone who would move heaven and earth for his family always watching out for them and being there to provide guidance and support when he could and he was not afraid to express his emotions Wayne was authentically himself at all times He never missed an opportunity to tell his family how much he loved them and how proud he was His legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those he loved a “Celebration of Life” event will take place Friday donations can be made to the Miramichi SPCA or a memorial of one’s choice over budget | CBC.ca LoadedNew Miramichi rec complex set to open on time 3 months agoDuration 2:21New Miramichi rec complex set to open on time, over budget3 months agoNewsDuration 2:21More sponsorships sought as cost grows to $98 million for new recreation centre in Miramichi. Fast forward to 2020, and Hutt was preparing to open a brewery in his hometown with two childhood friends. With a space of their own, Hutt and his business partner saw an opportunity to bring acts to the city to perform at New Maritime Beer Company. He said they started small hosting bands touring through the region. In July, they took things to the next level when they shut down half of Newcastle Boulvar to host the inaugural New Maritime Music Festival. Hutt said just north of 1,500 people came out to the one-day event headlined by Matt Mays and Sloan. With the success of the first event, Hutt said they are expanding the festival next year and have already lined up their headlining acts. July Talk and The Trews will lead the festival with more surprises to come, according to Hutt. “We learned a lot doing it the first time,” said Hutt. “The goal was always to grow for year two.” With other successful musical festivals in the province, including Dieppe’s YQM Country Fest, Hutt said they want to continue to carve out their own niche, bringing in artists from the rock and indie rock world. New Maritime Beer Company opened in January 2020 with a mission to become a community space, Hutt said. While it was a “terrible time” to open with the pandemic just around the corner, they were able to survive. When they were able to welcome people back to the space, Hutt said they wanted to get back to their main goal and the music festival is a way to do just that. “When we had the idea to open the brewery, it was going to be a community gathering place and bring people together, so after not having that for a couple of years, we really wanted to lean into events that would do that,” he said. to the late Allan and Jeanie (Oldfield) Hachey He was a current employee of Dew Engineering for many years and well liked by his co-workers His co-workers played tricks on Jim Bob (nickname) over the years and a can of beer in his lunch (Nancy was a good lunch maker) Survived by his wife Nancy (Gray) Hachey; his daughter Holly (Chris Carnahan); his grandson Riley; his brother William Hachey (Libby) and niece Lindsay His brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Vernon and Fran Gray and Joyce and Ronnie MacLaughlin of Sussex he was predeceased by his sister Ruby Thomas; and brother-in-law Junior Gray (Late Sharon) donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor's choice Liam Elmes is preparing for a trip he hopes will grab people’s attention while generating awareness for motor neurone diseases and raising funds to support a friend living with the condition The Miramichi man left Sunday morning and will walk for more than 7,000 kilometres to educate people about motor neurone diseases and help his best friend He plans to travel almost entirely on foot and catch a bus between Medellin and Panama They’ve since visited or lived in seven countries together but Lawes was diagnosed with the disease five years ago at the age of 26 and he now uses a wheelchair to get around “All proceeds raised during my walk will go to Luke to help him pay for his treatments and have the best quality of life he possibly can,” said Elmes who was born in Ireland but has spent the past 13 years in Miramichi The next issue of Morning Email Times & Transcript will soon be in your inbox “I decided I wanted to raise money for Luke and his fiancée to keep travelling as much as they can and for Luke to be able to enjoy life. I wanted to do something that’s so crazy and out there that people will pay attention to it.” Motor neurone diseases are a group of rare neurogenerative disorders affecting motor neurons, the cells which control the body’s voluntary muscles. The diseases impact children and adults and can be detected at birth or noticed later in life. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is the most common form of motor neurone diseases. According to the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations, approximately 140,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. There is no known cure. Elmes said he’s been inspired by Lawes’s determination to keep fighting and his refusal to let a debilitating disease keep him down. He said Lawes is working on regaining his voice, with help from technology, and has managed to reach out to other people in similar situations and encourage them to keep going. Elmes, a 2015 James M. Hill Memorial High School grad, said his trek for Lawes will likely take a year to complete. He’ll be carrying a backpack with a tent, hiking poles, phone chargers, portable cooking gear, and clothing. He also plans to start out with at least a week’s supply of food. “Luke is an absolute mental warrior,” said Elmes. “Everything I’m doing on this trip is for him because he’s touched so many lives and still wants to live life to the fullest when a lot of people with this disease would want to give up. “Luke also told me he’s excited for me and looks forward to tuning in and following my journey.” Elmes is accepting donations through a GoFundMe page. He’ll be documenting his journey daily on social media under the @luckycharms_97 handle. He said he’s grateful for the support he’s received to date, both from locals and people abroad. He’s already raised the equivalent of at least $1,700 CAD through GoFundMe. Elmes said he hopes more awareness of motor neurone diseases will lead to more funding for research, treatments, and a potential cure. “I’m excited to take off and show people that their money is going to a good cause. I’m not doing this for myself but I want people to notice my journey while drawing attention to Luke’s cause.” The federal paycentre in Miramichi has been tasked with eliminating a backlog of complex outstanding transactions caused by the error-plagued Phoenix pay system But that still won’t likely won’t erase a system-wide backlog that is now 416,000 deep That’s as the federal government says it’s inching closer to the permanent replacement of Phoenix with Miramichi also playing a role in those efforts Public Services and Procurement Canada says that it will now be issuing quarterly progress reports towards the goal of replacing Phoenix A first report lays out a new “pay operations strategy” for the Miramichi centre for the year ahead “The team in Miramichi has been over the last year working on new material coming into the centre but also the backlog,” said Public Services and Procurement Canada associate deputy minister Alex Benay “Last year we had 120 employees working on the back, and this year we’ve up to 200. “The expectation is that we are able to continue making an increased dent into the backlog of the operations.” A total of 112,000 complex backlog transactions will be tackled this fiscal year. A total of nearly 19,000 backlog transactions deemed likely to have an important financial impact on employees will be prioritized, Benay said. But he added that the work could be derailed as new payroll errors emerge, noting the staff in Miramichi had to “intervene” 1.6 million times last year to make sure pay got out to various public servants after the system didn’t do so. “So they will obviously be busy just processing just regular pay as well,” he said. Miramichi has also faced more transactions as the size of the public service grows, another consideration in how big of a dent is made. “We do not have control over intake which has historically increased year over year,” Benay said, noting that, in 2023, intake was 16 per cent higher than in 2022, while also 38 per cent higher than in 2021, and 66 per cent higher than in 2020. The first quarterly report states that, “because of this, there is a risk that additional transactions may enter the backlog, therefore we are forecasting a net backlog reduction of approximately 49,000 transactions in 2024-25.” An online dashboard last updated in June by the federal government shows an existing backlog of 416,000 transactions. More than half – 213,000 – are more than a year old, it states. Meanwhile, the government has spent $154 million since 2018 looking into a new platform to replace Phoenix. It more recently awarded Dayforce a contract to test the viability of its system. Dayforce, a payroll and human resources management system owned by global company Ceridian, is already in use by hundreds of organizations across the world, including the governments of Ontario and California. The 2024 federal budget then allocated $135 million this year for Public Services and Procurement Canada and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat to “improve public service human resources and pay systems, including continuing work on a potential next generation pay solution.” The new quarterly report said that Shared Services Canada will be, in parallel, testing the Dayforce HR and pay solution. “To support this testing, Public Services and Procurement Canada committed to process the 12,000 outstanding pay transactions that Shared Services Canada employees had on April 11, 2024. As a result, SSC will have no pay transactions older than one year old as of April 2025,” it states. “Our goal is to process all of these transactions by March 2025.” The Phoenix system was launched in 2016 and has cost taxpayers upwards of $3.5 billion. That’s after its intent was to save the government millions by consolidating pay systems across departments. Instead, it’s been plagued by issues with workers’ paycheques not being delivered on time or in the correct amounts ever since its inception, particularly with public servants extending contracts or acting positions, taking leave, or making changes to personal information. But at the same time, the problems have only expanded the staff at the federal pay centre in Miramichi, which processes the paycheques for most federal departments. Last year, Public Services and Procurement Canada confirmed that there were now more than 1,100 employees working at the centre in Miramichi. Asked what kind of staffing levels will be needed in Miramichi as Phoenix is phased out, Benay said “that the pay centre will change over the years.” “We are deploying new technology, but to be able to say specifically what that means right now is too early,” he said. “At the moment, where we stand right now, we’re literally starting that analysis with the pay centre (on the use of Dayforce). “I think the big difference from last time is the pay centre folks in Miramichi and the other folks across the country that work in the pay centre are involved in designing this thing. “Personally, I won’t sign off on deploying it if they aren’t happy.” The event takes place on Miramichi from July 4 to 5 BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 13 The 2025 festival season is coming together — and this includes Miramichi which will be presenting two days of music on July 4 and 5 The festival takes place at the New Maritime Beer Company building Passes for the New Maritime Music Festival are on sale now. A 51-year-old woman from the Miramichi area is dead after an off-road vehicle crash Monday The RCMP said in a news release Tuesday, Jan. 14, that the woman from South Nelson was ejected from the side-by-side and died at the scene while travelling with another person on Semiwagan Road in Barnaby River. Police responded to the crash at around 5:30 p.m. “The crash is believed to have occurred when the driver of the ATV lost control of his vehicle, and rolled several times,” Staff Sgt. Marc Tremblay said in the release. “The driver was treated on scene for non-life-threatening injuries.” Tremblay said the Miramichi Fire Department, Ambulance New Brunswick staff, an RCMP forensic analyst team, and a collision reconstructionist attended the scene. The New Brunswick Coroner’s Office is also helping with the ongoing investigation. Police did not identify the victim. Tremblay said an autopsy will be held to determine the woman’s exact cause of death.
