The city of Mount Pearl
NL has once again contracted out the work of municipal workers to a private company
wasting taxpayer money on snow clearing services that are likely to never be used
“After municipal workers went on strike two years ago
Mount Pearl contracted out part of our snow clearing
claiming the contractors would support us if there was a bad weather event like Snowmageddon in 2020,” explained CUPE 2099 President Sherry Fitzpatrick
The people of Mount Pearl have had their hard-earned tax money spent on a service that was never performed.”
the City of Mount Pearl awarded a tender for $216,000 to Farrell’s Excavating
so the amount can increase or decrease depending on usage
even if Farrell’s Excavating is never used
Farrell’s Excavating had a previous contract with Mount Pearl for snow clearing support that was awarded in November 2022 for $531,875
“If there’s one thing everyone knows about Mount Pearl
it’s that they have amazing snow clearing and that work is done by our municipal workers
not some private contractor,” said CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador President Sherry Hillier
“Even when we got buried in snow last year
“Councilor Jim Locke told reporters that he thought the municipal workers were doing an amazing job,” continued Hillier
“so my question is why is that money not being spent to support the public services that actually need it
Why not spend that $100,000 on creating good
permanent jobs for the people of Mount Pearl who can continue to do their amazing work?”
If the council thinks we need help to ‘get the job done’ as they claim
then they should hire more city staff to help,” said Fitzpatrick
“There are public services that are struggling
Why waste taxpayer’s money on a limited contract

“Rats on Ashford Drive are everywhere,” Mount Pearl resident Lynn Tucker wrote in a message to The Telegram
Residents aren’t the only ones who have noticed an increase in the number of rat interactions over the last little while
Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker told The Telegram that it is the time of year when the city starts receiving more phone calls about rat sightings
The temperature outside is cooling and the animals are starting to seek warmer places to spend the winer
rats become the worst version of a snowbird
we always get more phone calls at the front desk
Members of city council get a few complaints
but is important to monitor the phone calls we are getting,” said Aker
They’re trying to get into the warmth of your houses or they’re trying to get near your houses.”
To help residents protect their properties from rats and other rodents
Mount Pearl is planning on starting a public information campaign
It’ll be designed to help people recognize the signs of rodents
where they could nest on your property and what rats are looking for in a new home
“We just want to roll it our proactively,” said Aker
Rats tend to go where a food source is easily accessible
cleaning up after your pets and keeping bird feeders in the right areas can all help keep the rat population at bay by limiting access to some potential food items
There are poisonous options for getting rid of rodents
but that can be a challenge for pet owners like Mark Collins
“I have one neighbor who puts out a live trap nightly and catches a rat to dispose of at least once or twice a week,” Collins wrote to The Telegram
Even taking his dog out during the night can be a struggle because of the rats
an animal scurried across their path causing the dog to start barking
which went against Mount Pearl’s noise control regulations
One thing Collins has found that has worked for controlling rats on his property is to plug any holes he finds and spraying cedar wood oil on anything that shows signs of a rat’s presence
“They don’t like the taste of that type of wood,” he said
All of this leads to an important part of keeping things rat free
That is neighbours helping their neighbours anyway they can
It’’ll be a part of the city’s information campaign to help people get the best of those tiny homewreckers
“It’s all the positive things you can do in your property to make sure you don’t end up with a rat problem and you also don’t further the rat problem in your neighbourhood,” said Aker
“You have to be kind to your neighbours and I think that’s important for people to know that we all have to work together.”

At about 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday evening firefighters responded to a reported fire at Pearlgate Manor on Wilson Crescent in Mount Pearl. Crews from the nearby Mount Pearl Fire Station arrived moments later and found smoke coming from one of the units inside.
Derek Hunt, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, said an unattended frying pan was to blame for the smoke, which filled the apartment and created a haze through the entire building. One of the two tenants of the smoke-filled unit had to be removed by firefighters. Oxygen was immediately given, and paramedics took the individual to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Hunt said that all seventeen residents of the building were temporarily evacuated from the building. After approximately forty-five minutes they were permitted back inside, after smoke had been cleared from the building. There was no fire damage to report.

A three-vehicle collision in Mount Pearl on Wednesday evening resulted in serious injuries, with those injured having to wait over one hour for an ambulance to arrive.
Emergency crews were called to a portion of Topsail Road near Corisande Drive at 6:40 p.m. after an officer with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) came upon the crash shortly after it occurred. The driver of a westbound SUV crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a second SUV. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles. The driver of a Jeep, also traveling east, was unable to avoid the collision, with that vehicle coming to rest on its side.
An ambulance from out of town, reportedly Whitbourne, had to be summoned to attend the scene, as there were no ambulances available in the metro region. At about 7:50 p.m. an ambulance arrived at the scene, over one hour from when the collision happened. A second ambulance arrived minutes later.
The driver of the Jeep, who was its only occupant, was uninjured. Three people, occupants of the other two vehicles, all sustained injuries. A passenger in one of the vehicles is reported to have suffered serious, but non life-threatening injuries. Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department tended to the injured individuals until an ambulance could arrive. All three injured people were eventually taken to hospital.
The RNC closed Topsail Road between Corisande Drive and Thomas Byrne Drive for some time as they investigated the collision. Initial reports from the scene indicate one of the drivers may have suffered a medical emergency, contributing to the collision.
22 random attacks on two men how they'd feel if their loved one was a victim

sitting in the dock dressed in identical prison-issued gray sweatsuits
listened as the judge indicated he was endorsing their release on bail with conditions as agreed between their lawyers and the Crown
but suggested he would not have otherwise agreed to it
Short held eye contact with the boys as he asked them to think of someone they loved
and to picture them being randomly attacked the way they are alleged to have done to others
“I don’t think you’d take too kindly to it,” the judge said
“Nobody in our public should take too kindly to that sort of thing

and Judge Jennifer Mercer will deliver her decision next week
Crown prosecutor Chelsea Drodge described the incidents as “quite horrific,” but explained the YCJA requires courts to release accused youth on bail if they can be placed into the care of a responsible adult and there are conditions that could address their risk to the public
The two boys nodded their understanding with the release conditions

December’s community safety meeting had quite an impact on Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker
As Aker and his colleagues shared the summary of that meeting during the Tuesday
Aker admits he felt like he was right back at the Reid Centre as they reviewed the realities of how residents are being impacted by violence in their community
“It’s a bit like reliving it,” Aker said of the process to create the summary
I’m grateful to have 200 people coming out with their voice to share their concerns for our community
“I must say I’m also grateful for the efforts the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary have invested in this
as well as the Department of Justice and Minister Bernard Davis to ensure that we’re working together to make sure this never happens again.”
including local municipal enforcement personnel
the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and members of local school and community groups
Meeting participants called for improved infrastructure and safety measures
such as increased lighting in public spaces
stronger community supports for troubled youth and their families as well as increased community engagement and communication
Aker reassured residents that these types of violent incidents don’t represent the day-to-day realities facing residents in the city and is committed to determining the issue’s root causes in order to implement effective solutions
which is typical of what we would see in Mount Pearl and the greater region,” Aker said
we have to find out how systemic it is versus how random it is and we have to prepare for both at the end of the day.”
Aker — along with Minister of Justice Davis and RNC Chief of Police Pat Roche — committed to a collaborative approach to finding a solution and announced plans to create a comprehensive community safety plan
Aker says the meeting summary represents the first step in establishing the plan
He’s looking forward to further engaging the community as the plan develops throughout 2025
“This is the platform for our community safety plan,” Aker said
While the final plan isn’t expected to be released until later in the year
Aker says collaboration is key to the end result
In conjunction with the RNC and provincial government
he’ll soon be establishing a situation table as a tool to determine the appropriate next steps to take through data sharing and collective action across multiple sectors within the community
In addition to the various government departments and the city
one of the representatives on the table will be somebody who has probably come through the system
“Somebody who has experienced this and possibly has been the object of some of these discussions in the past but can share some of the experiences
The published summary says residents can expect continued engagement soon through regular community safety meetings and increasing levels of collaboration with law enforcement
While that represents big-picture next steps for the creation of a new community plan
Aker says the day-to-day work on it has already started and some meetings have already taken place
there’s no point in putting in the work on a community safety plan if it doesn’t actually address the concerns of residents and wants the community to keep its collective eyes peeled for upcoming meetings and further opportunities to provide valuable feedback
“We will be looking for some further feedback from the community
primarily to feed into the process where we’re establishing that safety plan,” Aker said
“We just have to make sure we are in touch with the people we serve
Part of serving our people is making sure they’re safe
is no longer safe for its residents,' says victim's wifeAt public meeting
various community members share their fear since a violent attack on Nov
When Bailey Rempel got up to speak at a City of Mount Pearl public meeting to discuss enhancing safety in the community
whose husband was attacked by a group of young people 10 days ago
used it as an opportunity to discuss the impact it’s had on her family
but there are things that don’t make it into the headlines
like how I had to go down to the school multiple times to call my kids the day that they went back
how they haven’t been back to after-school care or Girl Guides,” said Rempel
“How my husband hasn’t been able to work a full day yet
and how our house stays dark because the lights make his head hurt
These are just a few of the impacts felt by my family from this one single violent attack.”
her husband called to say he was at Morris Academy to pick up their kids
He shouted that I had to get to the kids,” said Rempel
when her husband told those running the after-school program he was there for his kids
“He had been hit in the head with a bat and he was bleeding a lot,” said Rempel
Rempel said he called her from that stranger’s home
Rempel attended the meeting because she believes that all victims of these attacks
“This is a bit of a flashpoint in the community
even though this has been going on for quite some time,” said Rempel
“So it’s taking a really awful situation for my family and using that to elevate everybody else’s voices
Rempel said it took the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) 20 minutes to respond to the call
wondering where the attackers were,” said Rempel
and because of the fear this has brought for other Mount Pearl residents
Rempel asked the city councillors in attendance what they have done to improve public safety
The victim count is mounting,” said Rempel
Jim Locke said the focus of the meeting was to listen to resident’s concerns
no solutions by the council were put forth
a report from the meeting will be made public in the new year
While some residents brought up suggestions for improving safety
most residents just brought up how scared they are
Many echoed Rempel’s statement that Mount Pearl is no longer safe
One Mount Pearl woman said she and her family chose to walk over driving; now walking has been taken away from them
She mentioned she feels safer on Water Street than in Mount Pearl
who lives four minutes from Mount Pearl Intermediate
said when he left for the meeting his wife was worried about being left alone
Another resident said that her mother won’t even go for a walk around St
Jana Sullivan started to cry when talking about her son
Sullivan said it got so bad that her son had to move away
She added that she even reached out to Mayor Dave Aker
Though Aker didn’t respond to the comments made by Sullivan regarding her situation at the meeting
he did say that the violence needs to stop
Aker then outlined the next steps for Mount Pearl following the release of the report
“It seems a lot is going on in the schools that maybe a lot of leaders and parents are not quite sure what’s what’s happening,” said Aker
“I think we need to reach out to youth and find out what they think is causing the problem
because that’s the way we’re going to lead ourselves to solutions.”
Aker added that there will be a jurisdictional analysis to show where the city needs to go and possibly more public meetings
“What I heard from residents tonight is that there needs to be more accountability within society
We can’t go pointing fingers at one block of government
“So we’ll take all that commentary and put it in the report
And we look forward to working with our provincial government partners
Aker said for those feeling unsafe in the meantime to ensure their kids go through the DARE program for drug awareness and sign up for a neighbourhood watch
Aker added neighbourhood watches are very easy to run once set up
“You become the eyes and ears of your neighbourhood
You’re not expected to be vigilantes but you’ll be able to engage with the RNC if there’s an issue in your neighbourhood,” said Aker

with games played at The Glacier in Mount Pearl and the C.B.S
It is the first time that Newfoundland and Labrador will host the event
“This is an incredible opportunity to showcase the best young female hockey talent in the countrywhile bringing our communities together,” said Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker
“Hosting the U18 National Women’s Hockey Championships is not just about the competition — it’s about inspiring the next generation of female athletes
and putting Newfoundland and Labrador on the national stage.”
The news release notes the elite tournament will feature Canada’s top young female hockey players
with eight regional and provincial teams competing for the national title
“The high calibre of U18 National Championships will help inspire female hockey players in our community to reach the next level in the sport

A fire in Mount Pearl late Friday night has caused extensive damage to a home and displaced four people.
Firefighters were called to the home on Smallwood Drive at about 11:15 p.m.. When crews arrived there was heavy fire and thick smoke coming from the home. Firefighters were able to put out most of the flames in quick order, however crews were on the scene for well over an hour ensuring no hot spots remained. Initial reports from the scene suggest the blaze may have started in the basement of the home.
Derek Hunt, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) said that all four people who were inside the home were able to escape unharmed. For a while a cat was unaccounted for, however firefighters located the family pet inside. The animal was brought outside where it was given oxygen before being turned over to its owner.
Smallwood Drive was closed between Jersey Avenue and Arena Road as crews worked. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Four people escaped a Mount Pearl house fire late Friday night but they have been displaced from the home that was heavily damaged in the blaze
the front of the home was ablaze and heavy smoke was billowing into the sky
They quickly deployed an attack line to knock down the flames at the front of the home and more personnel entered the house to conduct an interior attack
flames could be seen glowing through the smoke from the basement and reports from the scene indicate that may be where the fire originated
Platoon chief Derek Hunt said firefighters were also searching for a pet cat that had gone missing but they eventually located it hiding inside the house
seeking Liberal nomination in Cape Spear‘I’ve always gone where there is a need’ says Mount Pearl Deputy Mayor
supporters and colleagues from Mount Pearl city council
Kieley announced she’s now ready to fight for her region and will be seeking the Liberal Party nomination in the riding of Cape Spear ahead of the upcoming federal election
now an above-knee amputee and wheelchair user from a traumatic accident that left her in a coma in May 2023
says she has learned a lot about inclusivity and determination during her lengthy rehabilitation back to good health and proudly referred to herself as a ‘fighter’ as she committed to stand up for the region’s economic growth
“The only way to overcome tough times is by coming together (and) supporting one another,” Kieley said during her speech at the Arts Annex in Mount Pearl
“It’s in these moments of solidarity that we discover the strength and resilience to move forward
This is my promise to you today: that I will fight with the same determination that I fought for myself
we can build a future where no one is left behind.”
With a master’s degree in Women’s Studies from Memorial University and experience as the executive director of both the Women in Resource Development Corporation and the NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre
Kieley emphasised the importance of collaboration and the power possessed by the people of the region in solving complex and systemic problems throughout the area
She wasted little time criticizing the Conservative Party of Canada’s attempts to weaken the country’s resolve with fear mongering and divisiveness
and feels our communities have shown their strength in standing up to such bullies
“Pierre Polievre and the Conservative Party consistently say that Canada is broken,” Kieley said
“It’s a narrative they perpetuate because they rely on division and fear to secure power
and something I believe and know the Liberal Party understands
I am committed to playing that role and nurturing that unity and reinforcing that strength.”
With former CEO of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association NL Victoria Belbin already having announced her intention to seek the same nomination and rumours that longtime MHA Tom Osborne is considering a return to politics to do the same
Kieley admits that her ‘million art projects that are half done’ may have to remain on the backburner for the time being
“There is no time (better) than right now,” Kieley said

Fire crews from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department are currently on the scene of a commercial structure fire on Dundee Avenue in Mount Pearl.
Fire crews from Mount Pearl, Paradise, and Kenmount stations responded to the blaze.

John’s Regional firefighters are on the scene of a major structure fire in Mount Pearl Tuesday morning
on Dundee Avenue in the Donovan’s business park when a Mount Pearl council worker was passing and saw smoke coming from the Cactus Ship Repair building
heavy smoke was coming from the building and it was drifting across the park at ground level
They then made entry through the large garage door at the rear of the business but it was quickly determined that it was unsafe to send firefighters inside
A master stream from one of the ladder trucks was deployed at ground level and used to send massive amounts of water in through the garage door
Smoke also hampered firefighting efforts at the front of the building but entrance was eventually made so the fire could be fought from the front
There were no injuires reported up to deadline on this story
More details will be provided as they become available

— Outside Morris Academy early Monday afternoon
the squeals of young children filled the damp air
It was a normal-looking elementary school scene on Nov
far different from the violence that occurred there on Friday evening
when a group of young people attacked a parent in the parking lot
That was one of two violent incidents on Roosevelt Avenue that evening that sent two men to hospital for treatment of serious injuries
a second man was attacked on the other end of the small residential street
Police believe the same group of young people was responsible
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary issued a media release late Monday afternoon
saying they had taken a male youth into custody in connection with the incidents
wearing a disguise with the intent to commit a crime
Police say they expect to lay further charges as their investigation continues
People living in the area surrounding the violent incidents told The Telegram it’s a quiet neighbourhood where they used to feel safe
Most of them talked about taking steps to improve security around their homes
and it shouldn’t be like that,” said one woman
One family described what they witnessed Friday: a group of young people running
They thought it was just teenagers playing around
Another man in the neighbourhood also heard someone shouting for help
and he was here on the step with his eye cut open,” said Gordon Kean
“There was blood streaming out of his eye.”
Kean said the injured man told him it was a group of teenagers who beat him up
Social media posts suggest a bat had been involved in at least one of the attacks
and one of the victims had been sprayed with an unknown substance that burned his eyes
That’s the information Mount Pearl-Southlands MHA Paul Lane has been hearing from his constituents as well
who’ve been calling him since the attacks happened
a lot of messages,” he said Monday afternoon
It has instilled a lot of fear in the community.”
It’s not the first time Mount Pearl residents have been shaken by violence: in January
the RNC arrested several youths in connection with a string of random attacks on other unsuspecting young people in the city
police charged a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old after another violent incident involving an employee at a store
Several young people were reportedly hanging around the business and when the worker asked them to leave
one of them sprayed the worker with bear spray
Lane said he has written Justice and Public Safety Minister Bernard Davis and RNC Chief Pat Roche to ask for additional resources in the community
I think we need to look at more police resources anyway,” Lane said
Both Lane and Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker have suggested in recent days the Canadian justice system could use an overhaul when it comes to violent crime
“This has to stop,” Aker posted on Facebook
“Our justice system may be failing us if this happens again.”
“I really think we need to get tougher on crime,” Lane added
“We’re not dealing with the same issues we dealt with in the past.”
The RNC has reportedly increased its presence in Mount Pearl in the wake of the recent attacks
Investigators say they believe there are youth in the community who have information about the incidents and are urging them to get in touch by calling them at 729-8000 or reporting anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS
They’re also advising parents and guardians to speak with their children about the incidents
The Telegram also requested comment from NLSchools Monday morning
The Telegram asked the school district how it is reacting to the event
what it is doing to ensure safety of people on its property
and whether more needs to be done to keep people safe on school grounds
The Department of Education responded Tuesday morning with a brief emailed statement:
“This random incident that occurred on the parking lot at Morris Academy after school hours
is not deemed an act of school violence and should not be categorized as such
As this incident is under police investigation
“The Department of Education will continue to work to ensure the safety of students and staff at schools
and will work across government and with partners as required to support overall community safety,” the statement said in full
