More details Welland Mayor Frank Campion and Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said a collaborative approach is possible regardless of the party affiliation of their riding’s MP and MPP Catharines) and Conservatives Tony Baldinelli (Niagara Falls—Niagara-on-the-Lake) Fred Davies (Niagara South) and Dean Allison (Niagara West) Despite six of eight federal and provincial ridings in Niagara being held by opposition representatives local leaders are confident collaborative approach is achievable but only two representative in federal and provincial governments Is that a concern for mayors who want to see their municipalities receive financial and other supports from upper levels of office Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati has long maintained having an MP or MPP as part of the governing party is better for the riding “Absolutely it does,” he said when asked if he believes having an elected official from the opposition party creates more work for local mayors I’m not concerned for Niagara Falls because I’ve got enough strong relations provincially and federally that I can pick up the phone and make some key calls I’m more concerned about newer mayors who haven’t established those relations yet — they’ve got more of an uphill battle I’ve been in this situation for a long time,” added Diodati but at the same time I appreciate that if it’s going to happen we’ve got to be able to march to Ottawa and march to Queen’s Park.” Niagara Falls is represented by Conservative MP Tony Baldinelli and NDP MPP Wayne Gates While neither is part of the federal Liberal or provincial Progressive Conservative governments both advocate for issues they believe are important to their constituents and hold their respective opponents to account when they believe they’re on the wrong track After publicly backing Doug Ford during provincial election Diodati endorsed Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford for a second consecutive provincial election this year Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe and Welland Mayor Frank Campion who all publicly backed the premier to continue leading Ontario None of the mayors of Niagara’s three most populous cities endorsed any leader for prime minister during the recent federal election all saying the dynamics of the federal election were far different “It’s been my experience (that) we always have government MPs and MPPs in the region and I’ll be honest I think they do yeoman’s duty making sure that all of Niagara is represented both provincially and federally,” said Siscoe Sam Oosterhoff is part of the provincial government as a Progressive Conservative MPP for Niagara West while Chris Bittle is part of the federal government as a Liberal MP for St “Chris and (recently defeated Niagara South Liberal MP) Vance (Badawey) I know spent a lot of time working on behalf of Niagara West and Niagara Falls ridings in the last couple of parliaments,” said Siscoe “Sam has always done a good job of getting to all parts of the region It seems like regardless of party affiliation all our MPs and MPPs get along pretty well with one another.” he said when funding announcements are made by the provincial government in St Oosterhoff is there representing the government but NDP MPP Jennie Stevens is invited because she’s the riding’s representative Siscoe said mayors also forge positive relationships with key federal and provincial officials “We make an effort as mayors to do that on our own and I think that’s part of the reason why we create those relationships because you never really know what the outcome of an election at the other levels is going to bring,” he said Campion said there’s “always an advantage” to having your riding’s MP or MPP in government but it’s “not the end of the world” if it doesn’t happen “I certainly appreciate all the help that we got from (Badawey) for the last several years,” he said “If you look at it from the provincial side we’ve been very successful with the provincial government even though we don’t have a sitting member you can work directly through your representative so it’s not as material I think as it might once have been.” Campion said he believes federal and provincial governments want what’s best for all municipalities but I think … the upper levels of government recognize that every municipality needs assistance particularly if they want to achieve their goals,” he said “If you’re looking at maybe you want to try to win (ridings) that you may have lost you still want to put some money into those municipalities.” Campion said he looks forward to working with new Niagara South Conservative MP Fred Davies Whitestone ranch at 406 Whitestone Lake Rd Whitestone Ranch located at 406 Whitestone Lake Rd Whitestone Ranch resort opened in the production of “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” is a muted final trip to Narnia for the Shaw Festival Would the last person to leave Narnia at the Shaw Festival shut out the lights In what has been an exasperating case of diminishing returns the company is taking one last swing at C.S Lewis’ children’s series this season with “The Lion It is the most popular of the seven books that comprise the series and offers the most straightforward story It should have been a slam dunk for Shaw … six years ago Adapted by Selma Dimitrijevic and Tim Carroll That was the season after the company did the Narnia prequel “The Magician’s Nephew,” a superior production that may be the best children’s show the company has ever done “Wardrobe” is the second instalment in the story Shaw did confounding productions of “The Horse and His Boy” in 2019 (the fifth in the series) and “Prince Caspian” in 2023 (the second in the series) it undercuts the whole reason you do these stories to begin with — a sustained narrative that keeps people coming back for the next chapter What is the point of Shaw ending its Narnia series where the story basically begins I don’t think the hundred or so kids in the audience for Thursday’s matinee cared what came before But the whole thing just feels like a missed opportunity for Shaw “Lord of the Rings”-style series across seven seasons But going by this muddled version of “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe,” it’s best to leave Narnia behind The familiar story finds four refugee kids during the Second World War discovering a magical world by stepping through a wardrobe Alexandra Grattion and Kristi Frank) befriend assorted talking critters while discovering the place is under the chilly rule of the White Witch (Elodie Gillett) who has subjected the land to a never-ending winter It has been prophesied her rule will end when “two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve” sit on four thrones to go with the return of the mythical lion Aslan It’s a lot of story to pack into a two-hour show and yet the pacing sags after the first 20 minutes The staging and lighting tries its best to convey this wondrous new world but the show rarely grips you visually like it should There’s also one omission that’s unforgivable for a show like this — it’s the only play in the Shaw series we don’t actually see Aslan the Lion we get a cop-out excuse that he appears as people want to see him To do a play with such an iconic character and never actually put him on stage is bizarre The three previous plays at Shaw made an effort and kids in the audience were thrilled Was this director Selma Dimitrijevic’s idea Why do a show like this if you can’t commit to the spectacle It’s the most obvious stumble in a play that feels rote and drawn out not helped by the confusing addition of songs in some scenes A 24-year-old woman received a nine-month conditional sentence followed by probation for two years for her role in a grandparent scam “She was an essential cog in the machinery of the scam without which it would not have been possible,” judge says A Brampton woman who participated in a grandparent scam which caused a Niagara senior to lose more than $28,000 has been placed under house arrest Dominique Alexander-Connell was found guilty of possession of property obtained by crime following a jury trial held in a Superior Court of Justice in St Judge Robert Reid imposed a nine-month conditional sentence followed by probation for two years The first six months of the sentence are to be served under house arrest The judge said the 24-year-old woman may not have been the mastermind behind the scheme but she played an important role in the execution of the crime without which it would not have been possible,” Reid said “She ignored the obvious warning signs that her job involved illegal activity.” Niagara Regional Police launched an investigation in November 2022 after a Lincoln man in his 90s was targeted by a scammer The caller said they needed cash to be released from custody and that a courier would attend his home to pick up the money Several individuals picked up a total of $28,500 over the course of two days Court heard the defendant was hired by a company “of which she knew nothing,” which operated from an “unknown address.” She would be picked up by a driver and taken to various locations where she would collect packages There was no evidence she benefited from the proceeds beyond the extent of her wages Alexander-Connell was wilfully blind to the fact that the envelopes contained money and the money was obtained by crime,” the judge noted According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre there were more than 49,000 official reports of fraud across the country in 2024 Victims of fraud lost more and Buffalo proactive approach with everyone having a seat at the table,” says Niagara Falls mayor Trade is expected to be the primary discussion point when Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S But Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati hopes the two leaders also talk about how Trump’s promise of mass deportations of undocumented immigrants may impact Canada Particularly, a border region like Niagara, with four international road crossings and a train bridge in Fort Erie the RCMP has identified as a new spot where unauthorized foreign nationals are using to enter Canada “I want to be prepared and proactive for our community we’re not going to have a repeat of what happened last time — we need to have a co-ordinated proactive approach with everyone having a seat at the table,” said Diodati Diodati is referring to a few years ago when tens of thousands of people entered Canada via Roxham Road Roxham Road was a well-travelled unofficial border crossing between Champlain used by asylum seekers hoping to enter Canada The Canadian federal government came up with a hotel accommodation arrangement in Niagara Falls in July 2022 to alleviate pressures on Quebec Canada and the United States reached an agreement to shut down the route The Niagara Falls arrangement caused some concern with local officials Diodati said it made an already difficult housing situation more challenging and stretched an already strained social support system “We had more asylum seekers per capita than any other city in Canada because of the amount of hotel rooms we had and it was putting extreme pressures on the community,” he said “It was just too much for one community to handle.” Diodati said the city heard from concerned residents although the federal government was dealing directly with hotels so we could be involved because we understand it’s a global problem and Canada has its role We wanted to make sure that everybody is doing their bit not just the over-the-top amount of effort for certain cities like Niagara Falls.” Diodati said the city has between 1,000 and 1,500 asylum seekers staying in various hotels — a significant decrease from the nearly 5,000 claimants transferred to Niagara Falls between Feb But Diodati said he’s worried about how Trump’s promise to deport millions of undocumented migrants from the U.S may lead to an even bigger issue than Roxham Road “Now that we know who our prime minister is going to be as soon as we find out who the different ministers are going to be I’m going to be reaching out immediately to be proactively prepared for what might happen based on what President Trump has said,” he said and we are not even remotely equipped to handle that I want to make sure that when Carney meets with Trump that — I know they’ve got a lot of things to talk about — this must be one of the things they discuss and that’s why I want to make sure that we get that issue on the agenda Police recently thwarted yet another attempt by foreign nationals to illegally enter Canada at a cross-border train bridge in Fort Erie According to the Niagara-on-the-Lake RCMP border integrity unit three people were spotted crossing the International Railway Bridge on April 13 where a car was waiting for them in Fort Erie The Niagara-on-the-Lake RCMP border integrity unit supports four Canada Border Services Agency ports of entry and now maintains a “24-7 presence” at the railway bridge “The strategic deployment of (officers) between the Ontario ports of entry has proven to be a successful tactic in preventing illegal migration into Canada,” said RCMP Supt The unit has arrested several people attempting to make illegal entry into Canada since this new initiative began A Cuban national was arrested in mid-March after running across the bridge “It’s now all part and parcel of the heightened border security on both sides of the border,” said Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop “We anticipate there will be a large push for refugees in particular undocumented people in the U.S I know the local groups that are engaged in welcoming and supporting refugees (in Niagara) Redekop said Fort Erie doesn’t have the infrastructure to house a large number of asylum seekers “The regional government has been engaged in this — they’ve been getting some funding from upper levels of government but really that’s where funding needs to come from and that’s where the supports need to come from,” he said “We do have international obligations with respect to asylum seekers so we just need to make sure that the infrastructure is in place and the parties whose responsibility it is for that funding will work with the local agencies to make sure that the people can be accommodated when they come cross the border.” Communications905-356-7521 Lake Ontario two-winged flies that resemble mosquitoes are often found in Ontario’s lakeshore This time of year brings the annual swarms of midges and even though they are less pesky than mosquitoes as environmentalists take it as a sign of a healthy ecosystem According to the Encyclopaedia Brittanica midges are part of the Chironomidae family that resemble mosquitoes with small mouthparts without a piercing structure for blood feeding There are hundreds of species of midges in the GTA they are the most concentrated in areas close to Lake Ontario “Midges are usually found around ponds or streams in late afternoon and evening in swarms that produce a humming sound,” Brittanica.com said with most spending the bulk of their time as larvae and living as a fly for a few weeks at most According to Insectshield.com some biting midges can spread diseases to livestock and horses but they are not known to transmit diseases to humans in North America The midges coming out now were probably living as larvae in Lake Ontario Royal Ontario Museum entomology curator and University of Toronto ecology and evolutionary biology professor Douglas Currie said in a Toronto Star interview And the reason they’re swarming has everything to do with attracting females Males gather in a swarm to entice the females forming a mass that resembles a cloud of smoke — sometimes near a tree or big rock that serves as a focal point to hover over “That’s why we’re seeing such large populations coming out now they will disappear because they are so short-lived,” Currie said Midges can actually be a sign of a healthy ecosystem The tiny creatures play a role in the aquatic food chain not only in Lake Ontario but also in ponds Midge larvae is eaten by fish like guppies and minnows Birds and bats eat both larvae and the flying adults “The apparent inconvenience that we suffer from them flying into our eyes or nose or mouth is a small price to pay for a healthy ecosystem,” Currie said Niagara ZWD The Local asked all candidates the same question and all but two had answered by the time of publication While many voters took advantage of advance polls Celia Taylor of the Green Party and Dinah Althorpe although they were sent reminder emails and offered an extended deadline I’m originally born in Pakistan and came to Canada in 1993 I grew up in the GTA and then moved to Niagara Region after I got married. I live in Niagara South and I’ve been raising my family here working as a full-time realtor with the local developers There’s no place I’d rather call home now our region has been overlooked by Ottawa—whether it’s crumbling infrastructure or small businesses being buried in red tape I’m running because I’m tired of seeing our families and seniors get left behind while politicians play partisan games We need someone who will put Niagara first What do you feel are the top issues facing residents in the Niagara Falls/NOTL riding and how would you address them beyond simply providing more funding Jobs and affordability: We can’t keep watching our young people move away because there aren’t enough opportunities here I’ll push for tax credits for companies that create skilled local jobs and fight to lower the cost of living by cutting wasteful spending in Ottawa Fixing our infrastructure: From the QEW to the GO Train expansion Niagara’s transportation system is stuck in the past I’ll demand federal funding to speed up these projects so commuters and tourists aren’t stuck in gridlock Supporting tourism and small business: Tourism is our lifeblood but rising costs and staffing shortages are hurting our local establishments and hotels I’ll cut the bureaucratic delays that hold small businesses back and push for incentives to attract more visitors year round Housing and homelessness: The housing crisis is hitting Niagara hard I’ll work with mayors and builders to fast-track affordable housing while ensuring real support not just shelters for those struggling with addiction and mental health challenges Niagara Falls/NOTL needs a leader with a balanced and fresh approach to represent them in Ottawa who recently completed his first year of studies at Brock University I am running because I believe in community and in building a better future for my family and for all of us who are fortunate enough to call Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls their home After 10 years of disastrous Liberal policies punished your work and doubled you housing costs Only Conservatives have a plan that will put Canada first and I encourage everyone to read it by visiting www.conservative.ca/change and crime dominate the conversations I have when speaking with residents at the doors and in the community Seniors and families are struggling because the cost of living is too high after almost 10 years of this Liberal government Their policies of printing money and blocking resource development projects have weakened Canada to the point that it has left us vulnerable to Donald Trump’s unjustified tariff challenges we have released platform ideas designed to address the issues of importance to the residents here in our community Our pledge to cut income taxes and eliminate the automatic and undemocratic escalator tax on wine which is why we have created a housing plan that seeks to build 2.3 million new homes over the next five years We will also reverse Liberal soft on crime policies and ensure dangerous offenders like Paul Bernardo serve their time in a maximum-security institution Canada cannot afford a fourth Liberal term they have undermined our economic strength and pushed more and more Canadians into poverty It’s time for a new common sense Conservative government that will restore our country and put Canada First—for a change I have lived in Niagara-on-the-Lake since childhood and served this community in a variety of ways over 15 years I’m running to serve our community in Parliament because as a country we are navigating some of the most challenging circumstances that we’ve faced in a generation President Donald Trump’s repeated attacks against our economy and threats to our sovereignty to the growing division and polarization of our society and more — we face serious challenges that demand real solutions and effective leadership and former three-term municipal councillor I have the experience required to tackle these challenges and deliver real results for our Niagara I’m running on Mark Carney’s team because he has the skills and experience necessary to build the strongest economy in the G-7 and keep Canada Strong in an increasingly complex world Pierre Poilievre responded to Trump’s tariffs by attacking Canadians saying ‘it’s not the Americans’ fault We’re stupid.’ He is just simply not someone who can stand up to Trump or unite our country at this critical moment the local Conservative MP has failed to deliver meaningful results for our riding since being elected we can’t afford to have representatives who care more about partisan games and sloganeering than results We need a new and better Member of Parliament  What do you feel are the top issues facing residents in the Niagara Falls/NOTL riding The issue I hear most about at the doorstep is the tariffs imposed by Trump and his related threats to our country People are anxious about what impact the tariffs will have on them has behaved in this unjustified and unacceptable manner and will work every day to ensure we remain the True North so dealing with him requires a firm and strategic approach Although our economy isn’t as big as theirs we have several points of strategic leverage that we can deploy at the right moments Our reciprocal tariffs will raise the prices of goods and American consumers will increasingly make their anger clear to Trump needs to fuel their economy and protect their security I will make sure our unique reality as a border community is reflected in the Government’s response and will continue to push for a strong and forceful approach to negotiations — which means negotiating from a position of strength and never selling out to Trump’s demands I am focused on building a strong local economy here in Niagara so that nationally and seniors have the secure retirement they deserve A Carney government will deliver a $825/year tax cut for the middle-class starting this year whereas the Conservative tax proposal won’t come into full effect until 2027 I will convene a task force of local leaders to collectively develop a roadmap for our local economy with a particular focus on leveraging as many levers and as much investment from the federal government as possible We need an MP who can bring people together and make tangible progress on solving the challenges we face I decided to run because Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls need a community-oriented representative who understands the challenges that working- and middle-class families and seniors face every day We’ve seen the power of having a strong Countless families in our community continue to struggle with the cost of living We need a government in Ottawa with the courage to stand up to price gouging and create a brighter future that excites Canadians We need to start by permanently taking the GST off of essentials and capping the prices of basic grocery items like milk and eggs to stop large grocery corporations from raising prices while raking in record profits Insulin and other diabetes medications continue to act as an added cost for millions of people across the country We will work with provinces to cover the cost of diabetes medications and lower drug costs so that millions of Canadians can get a break on the cost of medication we need to use public lands to build truly affordable and non-market housing while protecting the environmentally sensitive lands that are vital to Niagara- on-the-Lake we must ensure that growth respects and preserves the unique cultural heritage of Niagara-on-the-Lake — from the historic Old Town to our historical landmarks which immigrated to Canada from the Communist USSR To raise awareness of the Libertarian Party of Canada The world is now watching the first elected Libertarian leader (Javier Milei) heal Argentina from the devastation of Marxist and leftist policies that impoverished citizens with inflation of one per cent per day I wish for Canada and Canadians to thrive again; our GDP and other measures should be world-leading We need to improve support for those who cannot bear the deteriorating economic conditions; I am appalled by the presence of encampments Technology now enables more transparency and accountability which are essential for Canadians to hold their bureaucrats and public servants to the standards we expect and deserve especially with how much taxes and fees that we pay I want to challenge the notion that youth will not or cannot make a difference in government A lot of youth stick to social media but don't do anything beyond that and that is where I take on the leadership role of running I can't just post an Instagram story and say I did my part I'm not at peace until I make a positive impact.  lack of jobs and food security — would aim to kill three birds with one stone the demand for housing is at an all time high We have so much beautiful land that is at risk of being cleared for homes due to the larger population industrial buildings and businesses that provide essential jobs the population will spread and land coverage in regions will have a better balance of housing We need to see policies enacted to protect our farmland and prioritize development projects in northern Canadian regions with smaller populations to fix our housing market UPDATE: Community members have poured in their support for Justine Burger and Kenneth Johnson Jr.’s family. Donations have paid their $2,300 fine from the City of Niagara Falls. You can read more here and watch our updated report below ORIGINAL: Just as Justine Burger and her fiancé were buying seedlings and soil to plant their garden for the fifth consecutive year the Niagara Falls DPW ended their tradition “The DPW came and took all of our materials,” Burger said “They came and totally just destroyed my soul,” Johnson Jr and Burger told me the city removed their entire garden without warning and that the city explained to them that the garden was a “hazard." who has been forced to stay at home every day after being injured at work He and Burger said that after the garden was taken away “We received a $2,300 fine in the mail," Burger said The family garden was started in 2020 by Burger and Johnson Jr.’s 15-year-old son “He came home from school with sunflowers he grew as a class project so he was determined to put them in the front yard," Burger said "We started with that and worked from there The family started aGoFundMe asking for help with the fine. It has already raised $650 “You can’t even begin to understand how much it means to us to have the community’s support,” Burger said Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino told me they will have a statement on Wednesday The Niagara Falls Public Library Bookmobile a Sprinter 3500 extended length van with a full-colour wrap The bookmobile is meant to offer literary resources to the community beyond Niagara Falls Public Library’s physical branches and has signed up an average of one new patron each day The Niagara Falls Public Library Bookmobile is about to celebrate its first birthday having hit the road for the first time on Friday 2,438 hours of operation and 3,369 visitors later Maybe you’ve seen the Bookmobile around town — a Sprinter 3500 extended length van with a bright full-colour wrap created by our in-house graphic designer Maybe you’ve pulled the handle on the side door stepped inside to discover a library on wheels its shelves filled with a variety of browsable and borrowable materials with events including a weekly spot at the Niagara Falls Farmers Market weekday park and pool visits throughout the city Like other library systems before us — including Toronto Hamilton and Guelph public Libraries — we built the bookmobile as a way to reach beyond the walls of our locations and better meet people in the community It turns out that a lot of people don’t know much about everything the library has to offer Our hope is for bookmobile service to help us change that we’ve registered 389 people for library cards so far an average of a new library user every day These are people who might never have thought to visit a library or who may have wanted to but faced challenges in doing so So here’s to another year of bookmobile service We do intend to keep busy, but we seek to maintain enough flexibility in our service schedule that we can remain responsive to community needs as they arise. And so, on a day when Mr. Carney wanted to underline the need to buttress Canada against a volatile United States there was Niagara Falls roaring away below him and the Rainbow Bridge between Ontario and New York State just over his right shoulder with long lines of cars beetling their way toward U.S “President Trump is trying to fundamentally restructure reorder the international trading system,” the Liberal Leader said he is rupturing – literally rupturing – the global economy and he’s putting in jeopardy the livelihoods of millions of Canadians including in communities such as Niagara Falls here.” A debate night miracle: no one lost their cool and everyone could learn something The key question in this election is who is “best placed” to stand up to Mr defend Canadians and build something better out of “this chaos that’s coming into our lives,” he said have managed crises almost all my professional life,” he said “I helped us manage through the 2008 financial crisis I think I know not just what it takes to survive a crisis but what it takes to emerge stronger than before.” The wind just went on attacking as he spoke It made the Liberal Leader’s eyes water and he blinked forcefully a few times but even as tears began to slide down his nose at no point did he look or sound even slightly perturbed by the gale Carney is riding high in the polls because Mr and they’ve decided en masse that the Liberal Leader is the best person to manage the man-made emergency Carney might as well have showed up wearing a T-shirt with “Adult In The Room” emblazoned across the chest (though he would never because can you imagine how that would look with the banker’s suit?) everything Canadians are reacting positively to in Mr Trump’s threats become like Niagara Falls after you stand beside it for a while – roaring away in the background so loud and wild and constant that you just stop noticing it – that could dial up the appetite for change that Canadians were feeling so sharply just a few months ago and a local reporter asked what he had to say to the Niagara Falls community where people’s lives are built on international trade and everyone is wondering if things will ever go back to normal just on the other side of the still snow-clogged river Carney turned toward the American entry point and made a motion like he was Spider-Man flinging a web at Mr “Our focus is on building at home and building a new relationship a new economic-security relationship with the United States,” he said but it won’t go back to what it was before.” Carney spent a few brief moments glad-handing with the local candidates and he stopped to greet nine-year-old Adeline – whose grandparents own the hotel – wishing her a happy Easter and complimenting her rainbow pompon headband and sequin jacket someone commented that the savage wind had finally settled down I gave a speech and now the wind has stopped,” he said with a laugh perverse political truth is that calm winds are not what will make for friendly sailing for Mr with 10 days to go in the election campaign Report an editorial error Report a technical issue Editorial code of conduct Authors and topics you follow will be added to your personal news feed in Following Shannon Proudfoot is a feature writer in The Globe and Mail's Ottawa Bureau She loves the hidden complexities and human side of politics and big news moments - not just what happened An incurable \"process nerd,\" she's convinced anything is fascinating if you watch long enough and ask enough questions to understand how it works Shannon was raised in a working-class family in Sault Ste Marie and can't quite shake her fascination with how social class figures in public life - or she was the Ottawa bureau chief for Maclean's and wrote for Sportsnet magazine Welcome to The Globe and Mail’s comment community. of redistricting A critical or contextual examination of a topical issue based on factual reporting tight races in at least two ridings and pundits calling the election the most significant in our lifetime Monday night promises to be an interesting one in Niagara Poll aggregators 338Canada and The Signal are predicting razor-thin margins between Liberal and Conservative candidates in Niagara South and Niagara Falls—Niagara-on-the-Lake ridings which would make an early call on the winner unlikely Catharines and Conservative Dean Allison in Niagara West are favoured to retain their seats “My read is that this is an election where a lot of people have already decided and they’ve made their decision mostly based on Donald Trump and who they think is going to protect the country against Trump best,” said Jeff Bolichowski a public affairs and communications professional with Armstrong Communications Group Catharines Standard reporter and keen observer of the local political scene for more than a decade said Trump’s tariffs and attacks on Canadian sovereignty “grabbed the entire country by the neck” and shook up the polls but it’s hard to focus on fixing your sink or roof when there’s a guy in the next room with a chainsaw saying ‘I’m going to tear the entire house down,’” Bolichowski said Elections Canada estimated a record 7.3 million electors voted on the four advance polling days over the Easter long weekend The figure represents a 25 per cent increase from the 5.8 million electors who voted in advance polls in the 2021 election 338Canada has the race between Conservative incumbent Tony Baldinelli and Liberal challenger Andrea Kaiser as a toss-up while the Signal lists the seat as likely Conservative Fournier is 338Canada’s editor-in-chief 338Canada has the race between Liberal Vance Badawey and Conservative challenger Fred Davies as a toss-up the Liberals had held a healthy lead in the polls for weeks but the advantage appears to be gradually shrinking as Trump giving voters space to shift their focus to affordability and the housing crisis Catharines New Democrat Karen Orlandi at eight per cent of the vote in an uphill struggle but she has noticed the change while campaigning door to door recently but I’m hearing a lot more at the door about affordable housing and the cost of living — the basic things that affect people on a day-to-day basis as opposed to earlier in the election,” Orlandi said Allison said he had noticed the same shift in West Niagara demonstrated by a series of videos he posted to X (formerly Twitter) of the latest smash-and-grab robbery at a Grimsby jewelry store — he recirculated a video of the getaway with the message “Vote Conservative if you want to have safe streets.” “When people realize they don’t feel like there’s any type of punishment they’re more willing to take chances,” Allison said blaming what he called soft-on-crime Liberal policies Allison suggested early voter turnout figures bode well for Conservatives “My feeling is that’s when you see an uptick in voter turnout it is because people are looking for change,” he said Badawey said his doorstep message is not just about what needs to be done but how it can be accomplished — particularly as it pertains to protecting Canada’s economy and sovereignty who was MP for the now dissolved Niagara Centre riding said policies such as eliminating internal trade barriers accelerating infrastructure investments and diversifying trade relationships will make a difference He pointed to the Niagara Ports Trade Corridor as one of his most important projects since he was first elected in 2015 “It’s a strategy that leverages our region’s geographic advantages and strengthens Canada’s global supply chain links,” Badawey said “With over $2.8 billion in annual exports moving through Niagara and investments like the $175-million Thorold Multimodal Hub and $1.6 billion from Asahi Kasei in Port Colborne we are building long-term resilience from the ground up.” Aggregator predictions at the riding level are not based on local polls which do not exist in sufficient numbers — rather they are statistical models based on opinion polls Fournier said his riding-by-riding projections are aimed at a constantly changing target but the results are “generally quite close.” The Signal said something similar: the riding-level predictions are derived from federal vote share estimates and recent federal election results rather than local polling data and readers should interpret them with due caution it will likely take hours for the winner to be declared Each voting station in a federal election counts the ballots manually and delivers the totals to Elections Canada which rechecks them before they are validated the electronic voting machines reported the outcome within an hour because the technology (first introduced for the 2018 election) includes devices that scan voter cards and tabulate the marked ballots Bolichowski said the results may be closer than in recent elections due to the NDP’s collapse and a redistricting that changes the riding’s demographics Catharines’) Western Hill in the redistricting,” Bolichowski said There’s still more than enough rural area in the riding that Dean will carry it without too much difficulty but I would not be surprised if the Liberal candidate did fairly well relative to how others have done.” Catharines is typically a “bellwether riding” for Niagara and Canada “In a year where Bittle could have been vulnerable the NDP collapse and a weak challenger could make St Bolichowski said Liberal challenger Andrea Kaiser has the potential to knock off the Conservatives’ Tony Baldinelli in a close race either way “There is a lot that seems to be playing to her advantage,” Bolichowski said “She’s run twice before and has come close to getting as many votes as Baldinelli “The riding realignment (Fort Erie moved to Niagara South) and an NDP collapse taking that party out of contention is to her benefit.” Bolichowski said the riding changes are swapping more progressive voters near Brock University for Fort Erie’s electorate which is more rural and isolated from the rest of Niagara you would think that would look bad for Vance,” he said that could be cancelled out by the collapse of the NDP He will probably be able to hold the riding but there is always room for a surprise on election night.”
