The Last Week Tonight host decries Trump’s fearmongering on immigration and disregard for the rule of law John Oliver took a deep dive through the Trump administration’s brutal and bewildering campaign of deportations on Sunday evening starting with the White House’s “nauseating social media posts” Posts to the official White House Instagram account include a video of shackled people led on to a plane soundtracked to the song Closing Time by Semisonic along with the caption “you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here.” The video underscored one of Oliver’s key points: “For all this administration’s talk of prioritizing hardened criminals Though Trump’s administration has claimed to focus on “violent criminals”, CBS 60 Minutes was unable to find criminal records for over 75% of 238 migrants sent to a Salvadorian prison, and the government even conceded that one man, Kilmar Ábrego García, was sent there due to an “administrative error”. it has been scrambling to come up with reasons why it was OK to send that man to a foreign prison,” said Oliver given that it had a court order protecting him from deportation to El Salvador and no criminal record.” So Trump posted an image on social media of a photo of Ábrego García’s hand with markups attempting to show that his tattoos indicated that he was a member of the gang MS-13 And in an interview with the ABC News correspondent Terry Moran pegged to his first 100 days in office Trump tried to argue that the clearly superimposed text of “MS-13” were actually tattooed on Ábrego García’s hand Oliver played the “absolutely incredible” 90-second clip in full before responding himself: “Terry I’m genuinely shocked Trump doesn’t drink alcohol because that is the most ‘drunk at an Ihop’ conversation I think I’ve ever heard but maybe don’t move on from that,” he continued “I know you’ve got other questions to get to but if the president of the United States is trying to tell you that this amateur-hour Photoshop is real let him go get the picture and make him say it again I believe that artless M that’s weirdly clearer and darker than all the other tattoos is real.’ Make him say I believe that man went to a tattoo parlor and said: ‘The skull’s pretty spooky but what I’d really like is a neatly aligned ‘3’ directly on the bone of my knuckle and can you please make it so that it doesn’t stretch or bend with the natural curves of the human hand and also make it look like a typewriter did it?’ sometimes when Trump’s doing his normal racist blue sky you do need to cut him off to slow the flow of hatred into the world,” he added “But if he wants to tell America that this laughably doctored picture is evidence of a major threat to American safety you have an obligation to let the man cook “And for what it’s worth, if Trump’s going to hash out those claims, he probably should be doing that in court, not on TV, and after he’s already shipped someone off to a foreign prison,” he continued. “But Ábrego García is just one of many horrifying stories surrounding immigration right now,” as the administration has embarked on a fear-based crackdown with blatant disregard for the rule of law Trump’s administration undertook 181 immigration-specific executive actions – a sixfold increase over that same period in his first term it has bent arcane laws and scoured databases to absurd ends a PhD student at Brigham Young University in Utah who had his legal status revoked after appearing on a criminal records database by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) just two speeding tickets and a citation for catching one too many fish “If you can be flagged for deportation for catching one too many fish We could be just days away from seeing him in an El Salvador prison which I’m sure the White House will then justify by badly Photoshopping an MS-13 tattoo on to his neck.” Read moreAccording to multiple reports the administration has instructed Ice officials to ramp up arrests to 1,200-1,500 people a day and no longer target the supposed “worst offenders” first “What the administration is doing is sometimes targeted usually blatantly racist and always cruel,” said Oliver such as deporting a child back to Honduras without his medication for stage four cancer “which is Trump loudly selling his supporters the lie that he’ll protect them from existential threats only to further government overreach and state violence while deporting makeup artists unlucky soccer fans and four-year-olds with cancer” The host called for pressure on elected officials to try to stop Trump’s illegal overreach a number of prominent Democrats have gone to El Salvador to call attention to this,” he said “which is definitely preferable to the approach others have taken.” He cited anonymous House Democrats quoted as asking Probably not,” and “complaining that rather than talking about the tariff policy and the economy we’re going to go take the bait for one hairdresser “Which is absolutely enraging,” he continued “especially as many voters do seem to get the clear problem with deporting people without due process to a prison for life Oliver urged viewers to call their representatives and make them aware of public opinion pointing to the former supreme court chief justice William Rehnquist’s assertion that “no honorable judge would ever cast his vote because he thought the majority of the public wanted him to vote that way but that in certain cases judges are undeniably influenced by the great tides of public opinion.” “I would argue the moment we’re in right now isn’t just worthy of a great tide,” Oliver concluded “It is worthy of a fucking tsunami because this is an absolute outrage and it is one where it is important to remind our elected leaders that all people are worthy of safety Follow live coverage of the Panthers vs. Maple Leafs in the NHL playoffs today Oliver Ekman-Larsson was fired from his job Ekman-Larsson had just completed his 13th season in the NHL when the Vancouver Canucks bought out the four remaining of his contract they know the feeling,” Ekman-Larsson recalled in a long-winding conversation recently with The Athletic “I don’t think anybody wants to go through it You can come back even better and push even more How did Ekman-Larsson climb his way out from rock bottom to the exclamation point of winning a Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers last spring to joining the Maple Leafs on a four-year deal soon after to helping them to the second round this spring How did someone who was expected to be “our No 1 defenseman,” as then-Canucks GM Jim Benning described Ekman-Larsson after the trade from Arizona Boudreau went out of his way in conversation to make that point clear when he had to scratch the defenseman he held in such high regard Boudreau can’t quite recall if it was his “call” or not “But I remember talking to him,” Boudreau told The Athletic you’re not playing that well right now.’ And he understood ‘You have to do what you have to do.’ He probably hated me for it.” A former Norris Trophy contender being held out of the lineup The story can probably be traced back to the 2022 world championships in Finland where Ekman-Larsson representing Team Sweden after his first season with the Canucks when he returned to Vancouver for his second season that fall and his skating really deteriorated because of his injuries that year,” Boudreau said Ekman-Larsson excelled in his first season after the trade from the Coyotes the team he’d spent the first 11 seasons of his career with Boudreau teamed him up with Tyler Myers and asked the two of them to do the dirty work This came after all those years in Arizona shredding foes with his offense — his skill “I was surprised at how well defensively he could play,” Boudreau said He didn’t take any “crap.” He played over 22 minutes a night things changed as Ekman-Larsson tried to play through injury “But you could see him struggling sometimes turning and even that first step jumping into the play,” Boudreau said “It’s gotta bother a guy with that much pride that he had “I just knew he was hurting and sometimes it showed up in his play on his first step trying to turn when guys would go to the outside.” “maybe I should have been a little more selfish thinking about myself a little bit more and taking the time that I really needed to heal instead of being unselfish and jumping right into it.” Ekman-Larsson wishes he had taken the time to heal “I think that would probably have been the smartest move,” he said it’s kinda in (my) DNA a little bit too to battle through stuff Obviously I want to be out there helping the team Ekman-Larsson doesn’t love to talk about himself and said as much But it’s evident in his willingness to share his feelings that all of this still eats at him somewhat It sucks not feeling like you’re having success or you’re feeling like it’s a struggle,” Ekman-Larsson said and I was fortunate enough to do it a little bit later in my career I had a pretty easy run for a few years there in the beginning The Panthers take pride in the fact that so many of the players who join them end up enjoying some of the best years of their careers to the Paul Maurice-led coaching staff and “a pretty welcoming environment.” “I hope that the players who come here feel like they have a real chance to continue to grow and to be celebrated for the things that they do well and hopefully utilized in a manner that first and foremost helps the team win but also helps them realize as much of their own abilities as they can achieve,” Zito said in a brief chat with The Athletic earlier this spring Ekman-Larsson joined the Panthers on a one-year contract worth $2.25 million Healthier and with the buyout nightmare in the rearview mirror he proved once again that he could still be a useful defenseman When the Panthers were without top-four defenders Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour early last season Ekman-Larsson stepped into major minutes as the team’s No He was a helpful supporting cast member in the franchise’s first Stanley Cup “It was like a different defenseman altogether,” Boudreau said Ekman-Larsson felt like he had changed as a person and player after hitting rock bottom a week after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final “I obviously learned a lot along the way,” he said “So (much) different stuff that happens over 15 years in the league and I think the people around me learned a lot about me as well — without pumping my own tires too much.” “I’ve always known that I’ve been a pretty good hockey player,” said Ekman-Larsson “But there’s so many more things that come into play And you gotta do whatever you can to get that edge on people.” “Even if I was playing good hockey and didn’t struggle,” he said “I wish that maybe I switched it up a little bit earlier and that was when I was going through the struggle.” He focused more on his legs and core and having quicker feet It’s work that’s helped him remain relevant The 33-year-old has done a little bit of everything for the Leafs this season He tangled with top lines alongside Chris Tanev when Jake McCabe wasn’t available He played on his off-side with Morgan Rielly when asked and slid down to the third pair after the team’s trade for Brandon Carlo He killed penalties when the Leafs needed him to and helped guide the No He brought puck-moving prowess and a calm disposition to the Toronto back end Ekman-Larsson proved instrumental in the Leafs sliding past the Ottawa Senators in the first round He’ll now face the team he rebuilt his career with in the second round “It’s just the details that make a big difference in the long run,” he said “I’m gonna be 34 (in July) and my body is feeling I feel like I have a lot of hockey left in me.” Ekman-Larsson remains thankful for his support system 1 fans,” the ones who sent him “Great game!” texts when he was still in Vancouver “when you’re struggling and you’re playing bad.” He learned a lot about those people then “It’s easy to have a lot of friends when things are going good But you really know who’s family and friends around you when you struggle,” Ekman-Larsson said I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of good people around me.” Ekman-Larsson looks back now on the dip his career took amid a year and a half’s worth of injuries and believes it has only made him stronger “I don’t look at it that I failed or whatever because I know that I worked hard and I know everything I did to get back from the injury,” he said I think winning the Stanley Cup has changed him probably on his outlook on the game — he looks happy,” Boudreau said “Everything has worked out for him in the end.” Jonas Siegel is a Oliver insisted on playing a full 90 seconds of the exchange so his audience could witness it for themselves. “I am genuinely shocked Trump doesn’t drink alcohol, because that is the most drunk at an IHOP conversation I think I’ve ever heard,” Oliver said after the clip aired. He continued: “And no disrespect to Terry, but maybe don’t move on from that. “I know you’ve got other questions to get to, but if the president of the United States is trying to tell you that this amateur-hour Photoshop is real, let him go get the picture and make him say it again. It’s more of a 3-2 and he’s the weak-side inside linebacker that easily transitions to the line of scrimmage as that fourth D-lineman. The question was will he be able to transition and play back? How will he do playing off the line of scrimmage? Because that was going to make or break what we could do.” Oliver made it. After recording 16.5 sacks and 23 tackles for losses as a pass rusher in 2021 and 2022, Oliver thrived in his new role as a combination linebacker and edge rusher. He piled up six sacks, 15.5 tackles for losses, four forced fumbles, five passes defensed and 73 tackles. It didn’t take long for Nardo to learn what Oliver could do. “The first week of spring ball, I remember watching him line up over a guard, play it from 4 yards, 5 yards, see a puller, track it over the top. And I’m like, ‘Do you have any idea what you just did?’” said Nardo, now the safeties coach at Charlotte. “He just did it so naturally, like you didn’t have to tell him. So, it was like, OK, he’s a really good inside linebacker, we know he’s a good edge, and it was how many different ways can we maximize Collin Oliver’s talent? We want him to rush the passer, we call this, we go to a four-down front. We want him to go to the field and mesh charge the quarterback, we make this call, go to this front. We want to blitz him through the B gap, we line him up here, make this call. “It allowed us to stay so simple in the back end and just always activate him, or we activated the other kid who just went to the 49ers, Nick Martin. Collin’s versatility allowed us to go from a 3-3-5, a 3-2, a 4-2-5 or a 4-1 whenever we wanted to without subbing because of Collin Oliver.” Oliver has obvious talent. At 240 pounds, he ran his 40 in 4.56 seconds with a 39-inch vertical leap at the Scouting Combine. He’s also diligent and studious off the field. Combined, Oliver was all-Big 12 on the field and in the classroom. Oliver’s ability to thrive both on and off the ball isn’t unique – Micah Parsons became a star at Penn State playing in both roles – but it is rare. OSU defensive end Collin Oliver (30) hits Arizona State quarterback Emory Jones. / BRYAN TERRY/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK“That’s two totally different worlds and that’s what was so impressive about him,” Nardo said. “You have those guys that can play linebacker but they can’t rush the passer. It’s so incredibly difficult to be great at both. In 2024, with Nardo looking to create more pressure on the quarterback, Oliver was back to his role as an edge defender. However, in the second quarter of the second game of the season, Oliver suffered a broken foot and missed the rest of the season. Without him, the Cowboys lost their final nine games of the season and allowed at least 38 points in each of their final eight games. Oklahoma State won both games with Oliver in the lineup. In 46 pass-rushing snaps, Oliver had a staggering 14 pressures. Penn State’s Abdul Carter, the third pick of the draft by the Giants, had 13 pressures in 77 pass-rushing snaps in his first four games. “When he realized that was going to be where the majority of his time was spent, he studied with coach Paul Randolph all spring, all summer,” Nardo said. “He studied which pass-rush moves worked and he would look at it and say if the offensive tackle is a lower-hand guy, I’m going to use this, if he’s a high hand guy, I’m going to use this, if he’s a leaner, he’s going to do this. They identified every week what move he would use versus what kind of a player. “All of a sudden, he went from a really good pass rusher to, ‘Holy cow.’ It wasn’t a reaction. It was a plan.” Throughout the draft, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said the plan was to add players who love football. That’s Oliver, which is why he’s going to be a success in the NFL, Nardo said. “I think it goes back to the same thing of why was he so good with us,” Nardo said. “Why was he so good in our first year there? And it was, he’s driven, he loves football, he doesn’t want to do anything but football. Yeah, those kids go to college, but why else are you in Stillwater, Okla.? His answer is, ‘I’m here to play football.’ He loves the game. He wants to be great at it. The actor is known to take an annual fishing trip “We could be just days away from seeing him in an El Salvador prison which I’m sure the White House will then justify by badly photoshopping an MS-13 tattoo onto his neck,” Oliver joked The late night host also brought up the case of Venezuelan migrant Jerce Reyes Barrios who had 14-year-old photos on social media used as evidence to deport him including a photo of him wearing sunglasses and holding his hands up with just his index finger similar to the ASL sign for “I love you” (though his hands were facing the opposite direction) His girlfriend told “60 Minutes” that the gesture was “all about rock and roll,” but immigration officers declared it a gang sign and said it linked Barrios to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua bringing up images of each celebrity making a similar sign with their hands You can watch John Oliver’s full story on Trump’s deportations in the video above Pro Hockey Rumors May 3, 2025 at 9:26 am CDT | by Week Tonight” on Sunday, host John Oliver broke down the inhumane and unconstitutional nature of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy of cruelty and fear.  “We're gonna dive straight in with our main story tonight, which concerns immigrants once again—named ‘Group of the Year’ by Right-Wing Scapegoat Magazine,” he said, setting the stage to critique the GOP’s supposed “worst first” strategy.  Oliver highlighted how the Trump administration has targeted vulnerable immigrant populations under numerous false pretenses and unfounded claims of criminality.  “For all this administration's talk of prioritizing hardened criminals, in practice, it seemed to value speed, volume, and spectacle over all else,” he said, referencing the frequent cruelty of the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration.  Rather than focus on actual crime, the Trump administration has repeatedly pursued what Sarah Saldaña, who served as ICE director during the Obama administration, described as “low-hanging fruit,” leading to the trampling of human rights If I were to constantly go for low-hanging fruit I'd say that ‘worst first’ doesn't describe Trump's immigration policy so much as it describes his children,” Oliver said As Oliver demonstrates, the only “worst first” Trump has delivered are the first 100 days of his second term Not signed up for But RFK has persisted in treating the rise in diagnoses as a tragedy. And the way he talks about autistic people in general can be utterly dehumanizing.” Kennedy’s vaccine skepticism is already having dire consequences: the US has experienced the first pediatric measles death in 22 years, while whooping cough cases soar and experts raise concerns about bird flu spreading among animals. Oliver concluded by acknowledging that the system pre-RFK wasn’t perfect, citing multiple Last Week Tonight segments about shortcomings within HHS. “But our solution was always it needs to be strengthened” and not “let’s cut its budget and put a dipshit screaming AHA in charge. it feels right now like we’re all about to get a harsh lesson about what each part of our health system does as it gets taken away,” he said “Which is sort of like finding out what each of your organs does as someone removes them one by one.” all of whom were “shattered” and said unequivocally that the cuts will result in needless death “This is a man who is clearly in way over his worm-riddled head,” he concluded he doesn’t even know how many diabetic people there are in China he’s currently spreading dangerous nonsense and gutting life-saving research The Tampa Bay Lightning will suit up without a key trade-deadline addition in their first-round series against the Florida Panthers Oliver Bjorkstrand will not play due to a lower-body injury, head coach Jon Cooper told reporters on Saturday. I'm sure he will get a great send-off at the FA Cup final and in City's remaining league games But I don't see any protests about his impending departure Most people think it's the right move for the club De Bruyne has reached the end of his useful life at City so the answer is simple: see ya Liverpool fans have accused Trent Alexander-Arnold of betrayal after he confirmed his exit It is like Kevin De Bruyne leaving Manchester City: fans want to discard them but expect loyalty and it would have happened to Alexander-Arnold eventually There is no talk of family or of duty or of loyalty or of deception it would have happened to Alexander-Arnold and Angel Di Maria at Real Madrid and Jaap Stam at Manchester United and Andy Carroll at Newcastle and countless other players who didn't want to leave clubs that forced them out We are still oddly patriarchal about the player-club relationship as if we cannot shake ourselves free of the idea this is somehow about master and servant And so Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave is couched in pejorative terms like ingratitude and betrayal and disloyalty even though he has given 20 years of his life to a club and a set of supporters he adores None of that means I agree with statements such as 'Alexander-Arnold doesn't owe Liverpool anything' I think he owes them for the care and attention they have given to his development the brilliant coaching at the club's academy that has helped him progress and the faith shown in him by men such as Jurgen Klopp He owes Liverpool for the life they have given him and his family and he owes the fans for the adoration they have lavished on him and the emotions they have sparked in him in moments of joy and celebration Everything about how he behaves suggests Alexander-Arnold is deeply appreciative of all that has been done for him But the club and the fans owe Alexander-Arnold He has given them moments of joy and abandon and pure exultation and sheer wonderful escapism that will last for ever moments that will sit high in the iconography of a club even with Liverpool's glorious achievements about the corner taken against Barcelona at Anfield in that Champions League semi-final second leg in May 2019 the corner that fooled the Barcelona defence and set up Divock Origi to score the goal that sealed one of the greatest comebacks any of us have witnessed on one of the greatest nights English football has witnessed Alexander-Arnold owes Liverpool for the faith shown in him by the likes of boss Jurgen Klopp He also owes Liverpool for the life they have given him and his family during his time at Anfield His greatest moments do not deserve to be tarnished by idiotic accusations of ingratitude It was one of the most audacious and clever and brilliantly executed pieces of skill I've ever seen And it was just part of a groaning portfolio of sumptuous passes and curling arrowing free-kicks that have made Alexander-Arnold such a wonderful player to watch during his time at Anfield Those memories are gifts that keep on giving Those memories do not deserve to be tarnished by idiotic accusations of ingratitude The truth is Alexander-Arnold was good for Liverpool and Liverpool were good for him He has not broken his contract or agitated to leave ahead of time or refused to play or derailed Liverpool's title challenge or bad-mouthed the club or the city and made a huge contribution to the winning of a record-equalling 20th league title He should be departing for the challenge of playing abroad for Real Madrid because I loved watching him play at English league grounds but I know I'm lucky I got to see him shine for as long as I did I still hope Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari provides him with the platform he craves to win his eighth world drivers' title but the chances of that happening are looking increasingly forlorn A spat between a driver and his team is not unknown but for Hamilton to aim a public and brutally disparaging barb at Ferrari during the Miami Grand Prix by saying 'have a tea break while you're at it' to ridicule their decision-making process is the type of insult to professionalism and competence that both sides may find it hard to recover from The chances of Lewis Hamilton winning an eighth world title at Ferrari are looking very slim has won his first trophy in the professional game with Bayern Munich Only a curmudgeon – or Arsenal supporters – would begrudge Harry Kane who won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich on Sunday Kane is weighed down with individual awards for scoring feats already but his triumph in Germany is a reward for one of England's greatest goalscorers and a brilliant professional The comments below have not been moderated By posting your comment you agree to our house rules Do
