the initiative is expanding for the first time into First Nations territory
with We’koqma’q First Nation in Nova Scotia among the 2025 recipients.
Charged for Change has provided $3 million in funding to municipalities and Indigenous communities that lack access to public EV charging infrastructure

15 communities received support for charging station installations.
Pascal Dessureault, chief public affairs, marketing and communications officer at Aviva Canada
said the company is encouraged by the program’s reach.
“We’re grateful for the enthusiastic response from municipalities to our Charged for Change initiative

“While this marks the final year of the program
we know there’s still so much more to be done to support the climate transition and we’re eager to explore those opportunities.”
Earth Day Canada’s executive director
noted the program’s focus on rural areas
Charged for Change and our partnership with Aviva Canada has supported small
rural communities across Canada in making their EV public infrastructure projects a reality,” Mallamo said
“We’re very excited for this final cohort of communities to benefit from the program and to see them support EV adoption for their residents.”
Community leaders echoed the value of the initiative in furthering local climate goals
Fort Erie mayor Wayne Redekop described the installation of EV chargers as a “tangible” step towards sustainability
“The addition of new EV charging stations reflects Fort Erie’s ongoing commitment to building a greener future,” he said.

A numbered company connected to Ornge air ambulance is accused of not properly training a pilot from Skead, leading to a crash a year ago that killed four people.
The federal Ministry of Labour last week filed a 17-charge information against 7506406 Canada Inc. at a Brampton, Ont. courthouse.
The company is accused of failing to provide pilots Capt. Don Filliter, of Skead, and First Officer Jacques Dupuy, of Otterburn-Park, Que., with the necessary training and equipment to fly safely at night, resulting in their deaths.
Filliter, Dupuy and paramedics Dustin Dagenais, of Moose Factory, and Chris Snowball, of Burlington, died when their Sikorsky S76 helicopter went down May 31, 2013, following a middle-of-the-night takeoff from a Moosonee base.
Other charges allege that employee safety was compromised by failing to provide pilots with a means to visual reference while flying at night, flying without adequate training and supervision and permitting aircraft to be flown by a pilot with insufficient experience for night flying.
Filliter, 54, who was survived by his wife Suzanne Pelletier and children Michelle, Mark and William, was regarded by colleagues as a top-notch pilot with more than 20 years' flying experience who joined Ornge in March 2013. He was an aircraft maintenance engineer, and served as treasurer with the Helicopters Association of Canada from 2008 to 2010.
Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne issued a statement after the charges were made public.
The government and Ornge leadership take these proceedings very seriously, and the air ambulance service is co-operating with federal authorities, she said.
“Ornge continues to work hard to ensure the safety of all pilots, paramedics and patients in order to deliver safe and excellent care when it’s needed the most,” Wynne said.
Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak told QMI Agency he will be following the developments closely.
“This is shocking news and heartbreaking for the families involved and all Ontarians,” Hudak said.
PC MPP Frank Klees said the Liberal government was warned repeatedly of concerns that Ornge air ambulance was putting its patients and staff at risk.
"As the record will show, numerous attempts were made to warn the Minister of Health, Deb Matthews, deputy ministers and assistant deputy ministers of the risks at Ornge. They were ignored. I was accused by the minister of fear-mongering," Klees said in a statement Saturday.
Wynne said her thoughts were with the family on the one-year anniversary of their loss, but that she couldn't comment specifically because charges are before the courts.
"There are many, many changes that have been made at Ornge over the last couple of years and we will continue to monitor the operations obviously very, very closely," Wynne said. "My heart goes out to the families of the four people who were killed."
Klees said the charges confirm the findings of a Transport Canada investigation and reports from front line pilots and paramedics who raised these issues with him.
Klees also said the helicopter crash occurred under a new leadership team installed by Matthews after controversial CEO Chris Mazza left Ornge.

Two paramedics who were on board a helicopter that crashed Friday in northern Ontario died doing the work they were called to do — helping others in need
had his sights set on a career as a medical aid from the time he was a teen
But his 19-year career came to a tragic end just after midnight Friday when the Ornge air ambulance helicopter he was flying in crashed in a remote area
Fellow paramedic Dustin Dagenais of Moose Factory
and First Officer Jacques Dupuy of Otterburn-Park
all died while on their way to pick up a patient in the fly-in First Nations community of Attawapiskat
John Snowball said the family is struggling to come to terms with the loss
even when he got a spanking as a kid,” Snowball said from his son’s home in Burlington
Chris had studied to become a paramedic immediately after graduating high school
His son spent more than a decade working near Cape Breton
before returning to Ontario for the sake of his family
He said his son had long aspired to work for Ornge despite the scandal that’s engulfed the organization over a criminal probe of financial irregularities
Chris landed a series of three-month contracts
but was recently delighted to learn he would be beginning a year-long post in Thunder Bay
That new assignment was set to begin within a week
Being a paramedic seemed a natural choice for a man who always felt compelled to help others

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating what brought down the helicopter
with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police

The patient in Attawapiskat will be transported by plane

Everyone at Ornge is shocked and saddened by their deaths
“Their lives were lost serving the public and we owe deep debt of gratitude,” McCallum said

but that their service will be honoured and remembered
“You know there really are few words to express how sad we all are that this has happened,” she said in Sarnia

Dustin Dagenais is one of two paramedics killed when an Ornge air ambulance helicopter crashed on the James Bay coast in northern Ontario early Friday
Investigators have recovered the cockpit voice recorder of an Ontario air ambulance helicopter that crashed in the province's north
Transportation Safety Board spokesman Chris Krepski says the recorder will be sent to the agency's Ottawa lab for analysis in the hope it will shed light on the cause of Friday's crash
He says a team of four investigators at the crash scene in Moosonee have determined the aircraft had a "high energy impact" crash and are interviewing potential witnesses and air ambulance officials
The dead crew members included two pilots and two paramedics
The Sikorsky S76 helicopter had just left its base in Moosonee to pick up a patient in the remote community of Attawapiskat when it crashed
Krepski says the recorder can pick up noise from the helicopter engine and rotors
