Cardinal Robert Prevost with Pope Francis in 2013
Credit: Vatican Media. While Prevost reportedly has high-profile advocates among the cardinals
the prospect of a Prevost papacy is also prompting pushback
And as cardinals tell The Pillar they’re aiming for a pontiff unsullied by the prospect of scandal
it is not clear whether the allegations and reports about Prevost’s leadership will prove a deterrent to the prospect of his election
or whether cardinals will consider them a kind of weaponized smear campaign against a candidate in the mold of Pope Francis
is the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops
a high-profile position that’s made him known to cardinals from around the planet
and which has put him in fairly regular contact with many of them
as an American who spent the whole of his episcopal ministry in South America
sources have told The Pillar that Prevost is regarded by some electors as having a now-desired Western approach to management and governance
without the perceived limited ecclesial vision often attributed to American bishops
As the prospect of electing the cardinal to the papacy has made headlines in recent days
Prevost has reportedly gained support from two-high profile advocates urging votes his way
reported in Italian and Spanish-language media
the 82-old-year Honduran cardinal who is widely credited with helping to see Francis elected in 2013
and who is also regarded as responsible for the meteoric 2014 rise of Cardinal Blase Cupich to become Archbishop of Chicago
and later a key member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops
But as Maradiaga and Pierre seemingly urge votes toward Prevost
abuse advocates are raising concerns about the cardinal’s candidacy
suggesting that Prevost’s handling of abuse cases should disqualify him from office
Among the cases flagged by advocates are charges that Prevost’s former Diocese of Chiclayo has been accused of mishandling clerical allegations made by three sisters, who say that in 2022, when they reported abuse in the diocese, Prevost failed to open an investigation into the claims.
They also charge that documentation sent to Rome on the case was purposely designed to look inadequate so as to prevent action on the case
The Diocese of Chiclayo has maintained that the accusations had been handled according to canonical norms and in line with Church policy - that Cardinal Prevost had met with the young women in April 2022
and encouraged them to take their case to the civil authorities
while opening an initial canonical investigation
The diocese further said that the results of their initial investigation were sent to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith
along with notice that the civil investigation had been shelved for lack of evidence and because the statute of limitations had expired
But in a statement published last September
the three alleged victims claim that there had been no investigation
or at least nothing substantial or serious
it was tailored to be considered insufficient and not merit the opening of a full penal canonical investigation
“We strenuously deny the existence of any ‘initial investigation’ during the tenure of Mons
Robert Francis Prevost Martínez OSA,” they said
we point to the non-existence of any decree ordering the opening of an investigation
or of any decree issuing precautionary measures.”
we were never called by any investigator to make any deposition,” they state
noting that they are referring specifically to the period between April 2022 and November 2023
when one alleged victim went public with her allegations
The women also claim that they were never offered any psychological support
They also point to what they say is a legal error in the diocesan statement
which claims that the civil case was thrown out for lack of evidence — the sisters say that the only reason given by the civil authorities was that the statute of limitations had expired
with no reference made to a supposed lack of evidence
the victims claimed that an accused priest admitted guilt to Prevost directly
compounding the charges that Prevost had mishandled the case
Another case — first reported by The Pillar in 2021 — has also drawn attention amid Prevost’s candidacy
In 2000, Prevost allowed a Chicago archdiocesan priest who sexually abused minors to live in an Augustinian rectory around the corner from a Catholic school — in a residence Cardinal Blase Cupich later said was not appropriate for priests accused of abuse.
in September 2000, Fr. James Ray was permitted to live at St. John Stone Friary, a house of the Chicago province of the Augustinian religious order. The friary is half a block from a parish elementary school.
According to diocesan records, the move required approval by Prevost, who was then an Augustinian provincial superior.
A July 2000 memo from a Chicago archdiocesan official indicates that the Augustinians at the friary said they would permit Ray to rent rooms in the building after they received permission from their provincial superior, Prevost. Ray actually moved in two months later.
The friary was the second choice of a residence for Ray, who was required to move in 2000 because of the pending sale of the diocesan property where he had been living under supervision. The first rectory proposed for his residence was rejected by the archdiocesan review board because it was on the same property as a parish school.
Archdiocesan records say the Augustinian residence was considered suitable for Ray because “there is no school in the immediate area.”
In fact, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic elementary school is less than a block from the residence. But there is no record that archdiocesan officials who visited the site or Augustinian leaders raised that as a concern, even though a Catholic school principal had warned the archdiocese years earlier that Ray sometimes took children out of class, and that he was “touchytender” with some students.
When the Augustinians permitted Ray to live at the friary, records indicate they understood at least summarily what accusations the priest faced. Augustinian leaders met with diocesan officials to discuss Ray’s background, and an Augustinian in residence at the house agreed to monitor the priest’s compliance with the restrictions of his ministry set by the archdiocese, including that he not be alone with children.
But administrators at St. Thomas the Apostle School were not notified that a priest accused of serial sexually abusing children was living in proximity to the parish elementary school, that he should not be allowed to help out in the school or parish, or that he was not permitted to be alone with children.
—To date, Prevost has declined comment on the Chicago situation, giving no indication of regret for the decision, or indicating how he might have handled it differently. On the Peruvian charges, the cardinal has pointed to a defense made by the diocese, suggesting that Prevost took the necessary canonical steps to address the allegations raised against him.
For their part, victims’ advocates have in recent days called attention to the cases in Rome, urging the College of Cardinals to choose someone as pope who is seemingly less connected to the prospect of negligence or cover-up with regard to abuse.
But it’s not clear whether those concerns are being heard by cardinals — and the complexity of the Peruvian situation has likely caused some cardinals to throw their hands up over the whole thing, suggesting that the truth can’t be furrowed out ahead of the conclave.
Some cardinals have also expressed their view that in 2025, no prelate who has been a diocesan bishop is exempt from criticism over his handling of abuse cases, and some have raised concern about the prospect that information about Prevost is being weaponized by his perceived ideological enemies.
Indeed, it is likely the case that in the run-up to the conclave, some media outlets are highlighting charges of negligence or cover-up connected to ideological opponents, and downplaying allegations of perceived allies.
But abuse advocates themselves say they have no party in inter-ecclesiastical spats, they want only confidence that the next pope will act with integrity — and without personal bias — in handling clerical abuse cases around the world. And some have said Prevost’s record should give the cardinals pause.
Advocates especially note that after Francis gained a reputation for protecting friends and allies from abuse charges, the perception of integrity should be a critical factor in assessing the next pontiff. That, they say, is the only way to see meaningful reform on clerical abuse and neglect across the Church.
Advocates will continue to make those points over the next days, before the cardinals go into the conclave and make decisions among themselves. But what that will mean for Prevost remains to be seen.

Once he was convinced of his call to the priesthood
he faced another discernment challenge: should he become a diocesan priest or join a religious order
he opted to join an Augustinian minor seminary
He was sent to study canon law at the Angelicum in Rome
receiving priestly ordination in the city in 1982 at the hands of Archbishop Jean Jadot
pro-president of the Vatican’s Secretariat for Non-Christians (now the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue.)
he was invited to work in the Territorial Prelature of Chulucanas
which had a strong connection with the U.S
sealing a love of the nation that would culminate in him becoming a naturalized citizen
In 1999, he was elected provincial prior of the Midwest Augustinians. A year into the role, he permitted a priest who sexually abused minors to live in a Chicago rectory half a block from a Catholic school
Prevost was elected prior general of the worldwide Augustinian order
Pope Francis named him apostolic administrator of the Chiclayo diocese
Prevost became bishop of the diocese that covers one of Peru’s biggest cities
Individuals in the Chiclayo diocese would later accuse Prevost of failing in 2022 to open an investigation into their accusations of abuse against two priests. The diocese vigorously denied the claim when the cases made international headlines in 2024

Prevost was appointed a member of the Dicastery for Bishops in 2020
Pope Francis told him he was thinking of selecting him as the department’s head
making him responsible for the selection of the world’s Latin Rite bishops (except mission territories
covered by the Dicastery for Evangelization.)
Prevost told the pope: “Whether you decide to appoint me or to leave me where I am
I will be happy; but if you ask me to take on a new role in the Church
Prevost’s attitude was shaped by the vow of obedience he made when he committed himself to the Augustinian order
He had grasped the vow’s importance as a seminarian
it will be harder for you to live celibacy
you’ll see that living obedience is the most difficult thing.”
Prevost resolved to always do what he was asked
both within the order and the wider Church
During their conversation about the bishops’ dicastery
Pope Francis asked Prevost to “pray that I make a good decision.” And in 2023
succeeding the Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet
Prevost also served as president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America
Prevost saw his task as that of identifying men who embodied Pope Francis’ ideals for bishops — prelates with strong relationships with God, their brother bishops, priests, and flocks. His job was complicated by an ever-rising refusal rate among priests tapped to be bishops.
When Prevost received a cardinal’s red hat a few months into his tenure, he expressed regret that he now had so little spare time.
“I consider myself quite the amateur tennis player,” he told an interviewer. “Since leaving Peru I have had few occasions to practice so I am looking forward to getting back on the court.”
But it seems unlikely the 69-year-old will have the chance to polish his backhand anytime soon.
Now the abuse stuff…that is a different story and I am not sure how important the abuse is to the college as a whole. But I hope they all have done their research and that they do value rooting the scourge of predation from the Church.

When Robert Francis Prevost was growing up in Chicago in the 1960s, a steady stream of priests passed through his family home. They were drawn by the irresistible dishes prepared by his mother, Mildred Mart\u00EDnez, who was of Spanish descent.

I wonder what that means for Prevost theologically. He really is a black box.
Pierre did such a good job in Mexico in fighting the Mexican bishops that he was soon made nuncio to the United States to reign in the American bishops and get more liberal bishops to be found and nominated for US dioceses, replacing the conservative Archbishop Vigano. Pierre was then made Cardinal for so loyally and effectively implementing Pope Francis' agenda in Mexico and the United States.
Prevost has not spoken up much, but I cannot believe he would have been made in charge of nominating new bishops by Francis if he did not have Francis' theological views. All I know is that the bishops who have been nominated under Prevost have been more liberal than under his predecessor Cardinal Ouellet.
The abuse questions make him a non-starter in my book.
This is because Jesus spits out the lukewarm, the people who sheepishly wait for whoever comes their way, and can also punish us with a bad Pope if we are not worthy of a better one, for our own good (nothing is better for conversion than a divine kick of our behind to try to wake us up). The Church can never be destroyed, but it can be seriously harmed if we deserve it.
In other words, the Prevost camp is saying: Prevost has an ideology, his ideological friends are the ones promoting him, and these friends don't care about abuse coverups. Message received.
I don’t understand this phrase. In what way are American bishops perceived to be limited in their vision of the Church?
Golly that’s a knee slapper. If this is the rest of world impression who does the academy award go to ? Lol
Anyways. The rest of the world notices that and I thought JD was just applying that to American churchmen.
But if it’s that we’re a nation of rad trads 😆😆😆. Man. That’d be hysterical in a lol sob kind of way 😂
I’ve lived my whole life almost exclusively in ADW and ADLA and hot dang I wish these rumors could be true but …. #whosgonnatellthem
Like a “I lived in the AD of Los Angeles if I don’t laugh I’ll cry” kind of a response? 😆😆
I absolutely believe you that this is happening and that you’ve seen it in action, im just floored such a wrong impression exists. But i definitely believe you! And I really wasn’t trying to laugh AT you or imply you were ignorant or anything, again I’m so so sorry.

Dates have been set for a coroner’s inquest into the death of a man in police custody inside a Tim Horton’s in 2020
Vancouver police were called to the Tim Horton’s on Main Street and Terminal Avenue just after 6 p.m
2020 for reports of a man who had been in the bathroom for more than half an hour
When officers arrived, they tried to coax the man out of the bathroom but he did not comply.
Eventually the man exited the washroom and
later identified as 42-year-old George Wayne Prevost
went into medical distress during the encounter and died at the scene
was called in to investigate as is customary to determine whether police involvement contributed to the death
The IIO conducted its investigation involving six witness statements and six statements from responding officers
It concluded that Prevost told police he had consumed 10 grams of methamphetamine
the police watchdog determined that the degree of force used by police was necessary and did not contribute to Prevost’s death
A coroner’s inquest will take place between May 28 and June 5
as is mandatory in any case in which a death occurs in police custody
The coroner’s inquest is a non-fault-finding public inquiry
It seeks to determine facts relating to the death
to make recommendations to prevent deaths in similar circumstances
and to ensure public confidence that any circumstances around the death will not be overlooked
The inquest will take place at the Burnaby Coroner’s Court starting at 9:30 a.m

“Let us remain in prayer with Mary Mother of the Church for the health of the Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Robert Prevost
as he led the Rosary for Pope Francis in St Peter’s Square on Monday evening
Pope Francis has been in hospital since February 14
when he was admitted for bronchitis; he later developed bilateral pneumonia
After the Pope had spent several days in hospital
the Vicariate of Vatican City began a regular evening Rosary for the Pope’s health
with Cardinals present in Rome leading the faithful in prayer
At Monday’s Rosary – the eight consecutive gathering for the Pope’s health – Cardinal Prevost emphasized that Mary
and consoles all those who have recourse to her help,” while expressing the hope that she might also be “a sign of consolation and of sure hope.”
takes place in the presence of the image of “Mary Mother of the Church” placed on the porch leading up to St Peter’s Basilica
and hundreds of the faithful have turned out each night to entrust Pope Francis’ recovery to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Cardinal Prevost led the faithful in the meditation of the Joyful Mysteries
followed by the recitation of the Litany of Loreto
The Cardinal then called on God to send the Holy Spirit “to help us in our weakness so that
we might grow in love and walk together towards the goal of blessed hope.”
The prayer concluded with the traditional prayer “pro Pontifice nostro,” (“For our Pope”) and the blessing of all those present by the Cardinal
and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies
whom you have set at the head of your Church as her shepherd; grant
that by word and example he may be of service to those over whom he presides so that
together with the flock entrusted to his care
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit

“This year is part of this 100-bus purchase … five buses that are for Island transit.”
Those are buses the business borrows from Coach Atlantic for the Charlottetown to Summerside
Souris to Charlottetown and routes to Tignish
The buses are returned to Coach Atlantic for summer tours
“A 100-bus purchase has never been done in Canada before
We truly are the largest privately-owned company in Canada.”
The average new order will be five buses per year
But the lion’s share will replace buses that are currently on the road now
keeping the fleet fresh and almost brand new
Mike said this order would completely renew the rural transit route from tip to tip in P.E.I
He also said the company’s previous biggest purchase was a 50-bus order from Prevost
Five new buses will arrive and join the fleet on April 1
There are also plans to grow the fleet’s zero-emission vehicles towards the end of the deal but technology makes it a bit tricky to throw them on the road
Coach Atlantic cannot transport the Charlottetown Islanders major junior hockey team to Quebec on an electric bus that needs to be recharged every 400 kilometres
That would mean having a backup truck follow it on its trip because the placement of the batteries makes it impossible to fit the team’s gear on the bus
“Our business model isn’t there and the technology and our business model doesn’t work,” Matthew said
“With the engines and the after-treatment in our vehicles
we consider them to be a clean diesel product and they are very efficient in what they are creating
“We are a very sustainable mode of transportation today without going to the zero emissions concept.”
Matthew said there will be electric motorcoach prototypes coming onto the market in 2026 and 2027 and “we want to be there with them and test it.”
president of Prevost and its owner Volvo Group Canada
told The Guardian that the purchase of 100 buses is a benchmark for his company in motorcoach transportation
“To order 100 coaches is not a small thing as typically orders normally vary between one and five units,” Tremblay said in an email
noting that it was a great way to cap off 2024 being that it was Prevost’s 100th year in business
Tremblay would not comment on what the cost of the deal was or the price of each bus
Coach Atlantic made a $16 million investment in its fleet of 56-seat motorcoaches
purchasing an additional 20 motorcoaches in 2024 at approximately $800,000 each

When Christine Prevost left her View Royal home on the morning of New Year's Eve for a shopping trip
While helping her youngest son spend gift cards he received at Christmas
Prevost was unaware fire crews were at her home tackling a blaze
A phone call from her brother alerted her to the emergency
the fire was out and her home was destroyed
lived in the rental home, including her eight-week-old grandson.
Thankfully all of them were out when the fire took hold
their 12-year-old dog Bella died in the fire
“We had her since she was five weeks old,” said Prevost
With their home in ruins and most services closed for New Year celebrations, the multi-generational family were left wondering where they would be sleeping that night
Emergency Support Services (ESS) quickly arranged for the family to move to a hotel in Colwood
where nine of them have been staying while they try to rebuild their lives
Prevost's two sons have been able to stay with family
Left with only the clothes they were wearing that day
and unable to salvage any belongings because of hazardous materials in their burnt-out home
the family has started 2025 trying to rebuild their lives.
“It's definitely hard,” said Prevost about the thought of starting over.
“It seems like we just all finally got settled … it’s devastating for it to just all be gone,” she adds
explaining they had lived there since September 2022
which was up for sale as part of a land assembly
their landlord has said it would take up to eight months to complete
the family has quickly got to work looking for a new home and has already secured one in Langford
which will be ready for all 11 of them in February
"At this time I think us as a family think it's important to stay together," said Prevost, who relishes her role as grandmother
helping both her daughters and their partners raise her two grandchildren
they hope to carry on their stay in the hotel
To cover the cost of their short-term accommodation
the family have received financial help from ESS and Surrounded by Cedar
a charitable organization that supports urban Indigenous children and youth in the Greater Victoria area
and the family are unsure what they will do until they move into their new Langford home in February
“We're still waiting to see if our bands will help us cover some hotel stay or short-term stay or emergency housing,” said Prevost
an online fundraising page has been set up by the employer of Vincent Dick
has raised over $3,100 to help the family with living costs
The community has also come together to donate clothes
that the family have asked to pause donations
“We'd like to truly thank the community for all the help and supporting us in our time of need,” said Prevost

Home » Prevost Unveils New Air Monitoring Technology at Hannover Messe
At the Hannover Messe trade show, Prevost proudly introduced the newest addition to its Prevost Piping System: the PPS AMS
PPS AMS (Air Monitoring System) is an air monitoring technology that combines an automatic valve with specific sensors to monitor and control compressed air installations
and leakages costs can be constantly under control and calculated easily and immediately
Content provided by Prevost
The PPS AMS offers continuous monitoring and delivers a detailed series of fundamental information
fundamental for every compressed air installation which are: precise leakage detection and their cost
minimum and maximum pressure and temperature
cost of the air in the entire system and up to date cost saving
users can automatically or manually control the air flow
this functionality helps prevent significant damage or air loss
it gives the possibility to maximize system performance
potentially improving efficiency by up to 40%
The type of information provided by PPS AMS is essential
which covers both the volume and live costs of leaks
detailing the volume and live costs associated with airflow
Pressure levels are consistently monitored to ensure system stability
The dew point is measured to maintain optimal air quality
The functionality of valves is tracked to ensure they operate correctly
fluid controls are optimized for efficient system performance
can be installed at each drop and monitored remotely
PPS AMS allows easy and instant access to data through Bluetooth
This feature enables users to keep key performance indicators (KPIs)
and generate graphical representations of the data
This also allows users to manage the valve through manual
or timer settings and set the parameters with minimum and maximum values (like temperature and pressure)
The system includes a complete set of alarms
ensuring users can quickly identify and resolve issues
Safety alerts warn users if the flow goes beyond or falls below the preset parameters
allowing immediate intervention through the valve
Pressure alarms signal potential problems if pressure falls outside the user-defined minimum and maximum parameters
The measurement and online monitoring of relative humidity in gases
or the environment are vital for the processing industry to maintain process control and quality assurance
Real-time preventive monitoring of critical humidity parameters can detect early signs of corrosion in machinery and pipework
thereby enhancing the service life and reliability of systems
Humidity measurement is especially critical in processes within the food and pharmaceutical industries to ensure product quality and safety
monitoring ambient humidity contributes to energy efficiency by optimizing humidity levels in production environments
as well as in intake air from fans or compressors
Temperature alarms alert users if the temperature exceeds the set limits
Leak detection monitors the actual cost of compressed air and leakages
The impressive suite of features offered by PPS AMS makes it an essential tool to have a lean management of compressed air systems
it contributes to improving companies’ carbon footprints and aligns with the modern industry trend towards Industry 4.0
PPS AMS supports compliance with DIN EN 50001
which regulates compressed air measurement norms
further promoting environmental sustainability
Prevost’s presentation at Hannover Messe highlights the significant advancements in air monitoring technology
promising a future of enhanced system control
PPS AMS is expected to be officially released in 2026
The motor coach industry has seen a multitude of changes over the years
and Prevost has been there for all of them
with more turmoil in the industry than ever
President François Tremblay is embracing challenges and steering the company toward a sustainable future
and nowhere is this more evident than in the evolution of the automotive industry
buses and even aircraft have become so commonplace the world over that we take them for granted
In a unique position to appreciate this journey from the inside is François Tremblay
Volvo Group Canada and Volvo Bus North America
more localized business in the countryside of Quebec and we have grown now to be the market leader in North America when it comes to the motor coach business,” Tremblay says
The progress is staggering: from fulfilling single orders for wooden-framed motor coaches in the 1920s and becoming part of the Volvo Group in the 1990s
to now being the coach of choice to A-list musicians and supplying more than 720 vehicles to New York City’s bus fleet
But given the enthusiasm with which the company has embraced technology and fostered relationships over the decades
the recent COVID-19 pandemic had a dramatic impact on the business
We were basically in the same boat as the airline and the cruise ship industries,” he says
‘What can we do better coming out of this?’ And it came down to improving our processes and our relationships with our suppliers.”
more localized business in the countryside of Quebec and we have grown now to be the market leader in North America.”
From helping suppliers during power shortages to seeking their input in the product development process
the result has been a more streamlined production – and deeper
Tremblay took this to the next level by taking their coaches on the road and visiting suppliers to show both the employees and executives the value of the work they do for Prevost
“We bring a little barbecue and we invite them to see the bus and show them where their part fits
and they can see the bigger picture,” Tremblay says
“A lot of them have never seen the finished product
“It builds our relationship with the supplier but it also builds connection for our supplier’s employees and leads to less turnover.”
The investment of time and resources in building such relationships is worth it
“We don’t always choose the cheapest supplier
but we want to select the supplier that has the most potential to support us in our growth
A significant driver of Prevost’s success is its commitment to sustainable practices
“Volvo Group is the leading sustainability manufacturer bar none
We’re the biggest seller of electric trucks in the world,” Tremblay says
“And the ultimate goal is to have 100 percent zero emission vehicles by 2040
“The ultimate goal is to have 100 percent zero emission vehicles by 2040.”
The focus on the finished product is only part of Prevost’s approach
“We’re also looking at how we can reduce energy consumption.”
This includes introducing LED lighting in factories to reduce power use
reusing batteries in charging stations rather than sending them to landfill and changing to a lower-emission welding gas
Even the cardboard boxes that parts come packaged in are reused – they’re sent to local farmers to be used as a chemical-free weed suppressant
“Every year we give ourselves the target to reduce the waste in things we’re using to build our product
so we can become more efficient,” Tremblay says
Striving for a sustainable future is only possible due to the strong position the company has built in the market
but Tremblay doesn’t take Prevost’s success for granted
“Reaching our 100th anniversary is a huge milestone
“Great product and great aftermarket support are our differentiating factors.”
it’s the focus on the customer and their needs that remain the most important elements of the company
and Tremblay believes that this is what continues to bolster Prevost’s position in the market
“It’s easy to innovate and put in a lot of gizmos and smoke and mirrors and say
will this technology or a new innovation bring a tangible benefit for the customer?” Tremblay says
“We’re looking at different ways to make sure that we can enhance the brand perception by doing things differently
But great products and great aftermarket support are our differentiating factors
None of this could be achieved without the passion and dedication of our 2,000 experienced employees.”
