Traveling Europe with my 5-year-old daughter has been amazing so far
She’s up to date on her fairytales and can recognize a magical medieval village when she sees one
That’s why I planned a trip to the Alsace province of France (only two-and-a-half hours away from Kaiserslautern
a short drive my daughter can handle well)
Alsace’s quaint villages and castles inspired the story we all know and love: “Beauty and the Beast!” We watched the animated film the night prior to prepare for our trip
we were taken aback by the animation’s accuracy compared to our hotel location in the village of Saint-Hippolyte
as a trip to any restaurant can prove this true
But my daughter could not get enough of this quaint little village
colorful French houses that would be fit for a princess like Belle
One village theme was hearts and we played eye-spy with any heart-shaped things we could find
A gorgeous little stream runs through the village
make a heart shape when they greet one another
What’s more interesting about this village is that it is authentic
and people live in these amazing medieval houses
we had the entire village to ourselves as we wandered through the streets by foot
how this experience with my daughter filled my heart
As our feet hit the cobblestone roads and our eyes gazed up at the charming architecture all around
my daughter could not stop thanking me for taking her here
She expressed that she wanted to stay here forever
Even more curious (regarding the lack of tourists) was that Saint-Hippolyte was at the foot of the best castle in the area
the kid and stroller-friendly Haut-Koenigsbourg
Every village in the area is nestled near a Vosges mountainside
Seeing this set-up of castles and villages during the drive in was incredible
nearly 800 years after its first construction
making it the most well-intact castle in the area
the castle rooms reminded me of Gaston’s tavern
I was further impressed with Disney’s ability to capture the rustic culture of the French countryside
I always choose hotels that include breakfast in the price
the French breakfast from Hotel Munsch did not disappoint
A specialty from the Alsace region is Alsatian Kugelhopf
yeasted bread with raisins baked in a ring pan and almonds sprinkled on top
I try very hard to eat specialties of the region
Only in France can something as simple as bread and cheese be worthy of a Michelin star (in my book
A lovely touch to this complimentary French breakfast was a local champagne
but this champagne was absolutely delicious
we left Saint-Hippolyte and headed to the village of Riquewihr (only a ten-minute drive away)
I told my daughter not to fret; Riquewihr is the actual Alsace village that inspired Belle’s hometown from the animated film
we discovered where all the tourists had been hiding
this village is world famous for its concentrated
it’s hard to believe people lived in such vibrant beauty and that they still do
There’s something so special about touring these rich cultural hubs
They were built from a place of traditional spirit and cheer
You can still feel it as you walk the cobblestone roads that many feet have walked before
even the feet of young ladies hoping for more than this provincial life

in Saint Hippolyte knows the reflections of light and lake for each season and he wanted his house to immerse him in them
After spending summers and weekends at the family home on the shore of Lake Revdor in Quebec’s Laurentian Hills for 60 years
Robert Heft knew what he wanted in a new house when it came time to replace it
“I knew the light and the lake reflections for each season and knew how I wanted the house to embed me in each.”
Heft approached Quebec architects MU Architecture with his ideas
the house clad in darkly painted white cedar
has a cosy feel with a landscaped area and large rocks dotting the front yard
The lake side has two massive glass decks opening to the water
and each bedroom has its own service area with coffee stations
The lower level contains a guest bedroom and a den
there are three bedrooms and bathrooms and another den
Break Residence took three years to design and build and was completed in 2022
is also visible as you enter from the front
The view through the house to the lake hints at what awaits
It’s almost entirely glass and cantilevered balconies
“I wanted each level to have a degree of autonomy from each other
I wished to limit disturbing this immersion in one personality as much as possible.”
Architect Magda Telenga, of MU Architecture, describes the project:
The Brazilian quartzite wall flows through all three floors accommodating three fireplaces and unifiying the home.
The lot is very sloped and the lake is on its southern limit. We knew these factors would influence the concept, and, indeed, the northern, upper section and the southern, lower section created a rather introverted and extroverted façade. In addition, the northern, street-facing façade provides for privacy and the southern one for wide open views, contemplating nature and social gatherings.
Does the difference translate into different feelings inside?
On the lake side, Break Residence is more open. Its huge balconies provide light in abundance to the home.
The strategically positioned large openings provide unobstructed exterior views and natural light uniformity. The ambience, however, varies in line of the vertical axis. The lower level, with its pool table and a mini bar, inspires lingering and downtime. The main level has a more official character and the upper level is private, quiet and family-oriented. Overall, the design breathes calm and comfort. The large openings constantly orient the views to the exterior.
What were the challenges in designing and building the home?
Shapes clad in white cedar painted black define Break Residence from the street. A landscaped area, large rocks and an entrance, create a cosy feeling.

– Parents from the Soufriere community and surrounding areas benefited from another initiative of the parliamentary representative for Soufriere/ Fond St
aimed at supporting students as they prepare for the upcoming school year
At a small ceremony held on August 16 and 21
cheque disbursements were made to over 400 parents
providing much-needed financial assistance to help cover the costs of school supplies for their school children
This marks the 3nd year of this generous initiative of the parliamentary representative
The initiative is aligned with Honourable Hippolyte’s election slogan that “Aunty Emma cares” and the St
Lucia Labour Party’s election promise of “putting people first.” Recognizing the financial challenges that many families face during the back-to-school period
the disbursements were designed to alleviate some of the burdens
ensuring that students have the much-needed resources they need to succeed in their academic endeavors
Disbursements were made on a tiered basis with parents with one school child receiving $300
two school children $500 and three children and more $700
The distributed cheques are intended to be used by parents to purchase
This disbursement compliments the EC$500 given by the Government of Saint Lucia to the parent of any child entering form one of any of the island’s secondary schools to assist with purchasing educational supplies
“it is important that everyone play their part to develop the academic and technical capacity of the community’s youth so that they can achieve their full potential
This disbursement represents my personal contribution to the educational development of your child.” Disbursements were made to all applicants regardless of political orientation
an action which is in line with the policy of the Government of Saint Lucia that ‘no child is left behind’
She added that by helping parents overcome the financial strain of education costs
we are investing in the future of Soufriere and of Saint Lucia
“I am resolute in my belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn
and initiatives like mine reduces the likelihood that financial barriers stand in the way of their educational journey
So rest assured that as long as I remain your parliamentary representative
I will continue to seek ways of investing in the education of your children”
The receiving parents were full of praise for the kind donation
One parent highlighted her gratitude by stating that
“Aunty Emma is putting our children first” and that she is greatly appreciative of Miss Emma and Mr
Pierre for the disbursement which will go a long way in assisting her

Soufriere/Fond St Jacques MP Emma Hippolyte has called for a renewed focus on the sanctity of life
following the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Hank Monrose in Soufriere last night
was pronounced dead at the Soufriere Hospital where he was taken after being shot at Lenny’s Hill
Speaking at a pre-Cabinet press briefing on Monday
Hippolyte urged Saint Lucians to prioritise the value of life and guide young people away from violent behaviour
“I want to take this moment again to speak to our community of Saint Lucia because the issue of the sanctity of life is an issue that we have to speak about,” she said
“I am speaking not just as a parliamentary rep but as a senior person in our community—all of us must speak to our young persons about the way they manage themselves and the fact that they just don’t seem to understand what life is.”
expressed zero tolerance for gun violence: “I make no excuses for this
Investigations into Monrose’s death are underway and the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is urging anyone with information about this incident to contact the nearest police station or call 555 to report anonymously
every time someone gets killed in her constituency she shows national concern
Condemning the gun violence is only a critical first step
This new generation has little to no appreciation of the sanctity of life
This material world is just destroying our core community values
Social media and TV glamorize and normalize gun violence
Law enforcement needs to do a better job in identifying and apprehending the criminals
In such a small community the investigation should aggressively pursue those involved and take them to justice
The criminals need to know they will spend the rest of their lives in prison
Government and community leaders need to invest resources to address social issues affecting our young men
We need social workers in our communities to help young people deal with their grievances without resorting to violence
Also participation in community organizations and sports help in reducing criminal activity
I agree wholeheartedly with this statement
“This new generation has little to no appreciation of the sanctity of life
Social media and TV glamorize and normalize gun violence.”
I might add that most do not want to work legitimate/traditional jobs
They want to get rich overnight by any means necessary and that is very sad

Guided by the theme “See the Signs,” staff of the World Council of Churches and its partner organizations from the Ecumenical Centre gathered for an Advent celebration in St Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church in Geneva on 2 December
Staff of the World Council of Churches and its partner organizations from the Ecumenical Centre gathered for an Advent celebration in St Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church in Geneva
chaplain of the Holy Trinity Church in Geneva
encouraged the congregation to hold two aspects of Advent together – both the joyful anticipation and the penitential aspect
seen through the prism of Christ’s coming in humility at Christmas and in judgment at the end of time
missing the full significance of Advent and losing out ourselves as we fail to take its message into our hearts and lives,” said Green
Luckily Advent season provides signs which can guide us in our Advent journey - and they are rich and plentiful
Green shared four categories of Advent signs which are particularly helpful – first of all
God invites us in Advent to reflect on His vision for the world
chaplain of the Holy Trinity Anglican church in Geneva
A second category of Advent signs are related to our human failure - the reality that we have not lived up to the God’s vision
There are certainly parallels with our own times
we live in what feels like a knife edge with the war between Ukraine and Russia and the real risk of escalation
We’ve witnessed the terrible destruction of Gaza
the tragedy in the Sudan and uncertainty as we await the new US presidency.”
the recent COP29 conference has shed another light onto the environmental disasters we face
we are becoming a more fearful and a less open world
increasingly keen to draw up the barriers against the outsider and the refugee.”
But the third category of Advent signs show God’s love breaking into our world
“We can only understand this within the context of God’s love for us - this is the love which enables us to hold together the radically different aspects of Advent and helps us to see how we are called to responding the renewal of our lives,” noted Green
God’s call to us in Advent is to help bring in his kingdom of justice
in love to respond and join in - in love not in fear
because "There is no fear in love but perfect love casts out fear" (1 John 4:18)
may we have the courage and integrity to hold together the challenge and joy of this season
to cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light
and to be willing to respond to God’s great invitation to help bring his kingdom of love

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Emma Hippolyte believes a prepaid electricity pilot project will allow consumers to control their electricity consumption.
Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment Minister Joachim Henry recently announced that St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) will launch the pilot project in August.
Henry indicated that caring for people and the high incidence of electricity disconnections prompted the prepaid initiative because people cannot afford the postpaid modality.
Dominica and Jamaica are among the countries that offer prepaid electricity services.
Like prepaid telephone service, consumers may buy credit and top-up as required.
In Jamaica, the consumer gets a Customer Interphase Unit resembling a security alarm keypad, which the power company installs in the home.
The unit beeps when only five kilowatt-hours remain.
If the consumer cannot top up before the credit expires, they can call the power company for an additional five kilowatt-hours.
“It’s an opportunity to allow the consumer to have some control over the electricity they consume because they know, for example, if they have paid $30, they need to ensure that $30 lasts them for the duration of whatever period they want,” Minister Hippolyte explained regarding the Saint Lucia pilot project.
According to Hippolyte, the initiative puts the consumer in control, making them more conscious of their electricity use.
“It’s a good thing. I am glad that they are piloting it,” the Soufriere MP told reporters on the margins of Wednesday’s House of Assembly meeting.
She also said LUCELEC would learn from consumer feedback if the prepaid electricity service is something they want.
This Government not for the poor…. prepaid electricity she promoting SMH….. Put the People Last…. That’s what it is….
Please be prepared for the storms early next week. Make sure you stock up on extras this week. Additionally ensure you remove any surrounding debris, clear the gutters and over hanging branches which could cause damage. Lastly, protect important documents from water damage in waterproof packaging. Be safe and take care.
Of what purpose is any government solely concerned with ways to mine the empty pockets of the working class, instead of exploring ways to collectively improve the quality of their lives?
