A welcome sign to Saint-Tite next to a gold cowboy statue
Right: Someone points at the road sign for Saint-Pie
You're on a road trip in Quebec and the next exit advertises "Saint-Louis-du-Ha
Ha!" which sounds like it's either the funniest place in the province or part of the Joker's origin story
While you should definitely pull over to snap a pic with the excessively exclamatory road sign
you should also know the story behind the name
And it's not the only quirky Quebec locale on the map
A quick look at Google Maps shows many other towns with mystifying monikers
here are a few standouts (along with the reasons behind them):
The La Tuque coat of arms features a pointy winter cap
Ville de La Tuque | Facebook
If Canada is America's hat, then La Tuque is Quebec's… well
was named in the early 1820s for a pointy mountain peak that some say resembles a kind of knitted cap worn in winter
Since then, the term "tuque" has been adopted across Canada to describe cold-weather headwear featuring a tassel or pom-pom. La Tuque has fully embraced the connection, even featuring a Sorting-Hat-esque emblem on its coat of arms
the feather in the town's cap is the popular annual canoe race
La Classique internationale de canots de la Mauricie

This municipality not only won a Guinness World Record for the "most exclamation marks in a town name," but it probably also has the most Instagrammed road sign in the province
so many visitors are charmed by the town's name that the official Saint-Louis-du-Ha
government website has added a link right under the main city logo to explain it
It turns out that "haha" is an outdated French word for an obstructed route, although the founders of the town seemingly hit no obstacles when choosing to emphasize each "ha" in the town's name with an exclamation point. They also went on to name other geographic sites, like Lac Ha! Ha!, Petit lac Ha! Ha! and Baie des Ha! Ha! (which could all replace the chorus in this Flight of the Conchords song)
including the ASTER Observatory and Celestial Garden that honours the Perseid meteor shower

This south shore town near Rimouski isn't gunning for unwanted association with firearms
even if it is kind of a destination for game hunters
it's named for an expensive goblet worth three pistoles
that sailors lost in the Saint Lawrence River sometime during the 17th century
Trois-Pistoles houses Canada's oldest French immersion program
along with an annual sustainability-themed music festival

A feline-shaped rock formation was the likely catalyst for the name of this picturesque waterside town near Gaspé
although there is a Mi'kmaq legend about a fairy turning a ravenous cat into stone on the beach
The area now purrs with nearly a hundred turbines
including the world's tallest wind-power generator that reaches 110 m (over 360 ft)
Google Maps.
is one of many sites called 'Vide-Poche' that can be traced from Quebec into the Southern U.S
It has some academics scratching their heads about the origin of the name
Some attribute it to the influx of Acadians who settled the area in the 18th century and then moved to Louisiana
calling it "the heir of an oral tradition from France."
the name is much more awkward now given the colloquial Quebecois meaning of 'poche,' or scrotum
and 'vider la poche' being slang for ejaculating… No wonder it continues to arouse interest
A golden statue of a cowboy on a bucking horse next to a welcome sign for Saint-Tite
This Quebec town is not named after the littlest saint, nor his nipple. It actually pre-dates the Quiet Revolution
when the province still suckled at the church's teat and named many places after holy figures — in this case
Leather is a major export of the area, north of Trois-Rivières, which attracted the annual Festival Western St-Tite back in the 60s. It still proudly celebrates all things cowboy every September. There's a huge rodeo arena in the town, saloons and the festival often welcomes country music stars — although Céline Dion also performed there once
A tree in Saint-Pie decorated with illuminated spheres
If there's nothing more American than apple pie
then there's nothing more Quebecois than naming places after Pie
That goes for Montreal's Pie-IX metro station and Saint-Pie in Montérégie
served as the longest-reigning elected pope in history
For those seeking heavenly pie of the edible variety: try some authentic tourtière

Municipalité de L'Ange-Gardien - Côte de Beaupré | Facebook
Arguably, there are angels in the outfield during soccer games in this quiet suburb of Québec City. The town was named after a church parish from 1664, whose bishop hoped to call on "the protection of the spiritual creatures responsible for watching over people," according to an informal history of the area
It's not the only place in the province named after winged religious figures
There's also a municipality named L'Ange Gardien along Highway 10 near Montreal that's a godsend for longhaul truckers who often stop by to fill up on gasoline and fast food
Ville de Val-des-Sources | Facebook
Quebec is rife with large underground deposits of asbestos
a heat-resistant but hazardous substance used in construction materials until as recently as 1999
The mineral fibre was mined across the province for centuries
many of which carried the name of the cancer-causing compound
You may remember the former city of Asbestos in Estrie
which was renamed Val-des-Sources in 2020 to dust off its image

Sweetie Pie’s
one of the city’s most iconic soul food restaurants
is planning a return at a brand-new location
Back in May 2023, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Sweetie Pie’s founder Robbie Montgomery was working on opening Sweetie Pie’s 2nd Act near the corner of Kingshighway and Dr
Martin Luther King Drive in Kingsway East (pictured at right)
Montgomery told SLM that the project was in its infancy
She anticipated investing nearly $4 million to bring the vision to life
Louis Dining In and Dining Out newsletters to stay up-to-date on the local restaurant and culinary scene
Then, this November, The St. Louis American confirmed that Montgomery had purchased a vacant building in the 4900 block of MLK Drive
Part of the revival was slated to be supported by a $1.5 million grant from the City of St
funded through federal pandemic relief aimed at boosting North Side businesses and nonprofits
Louis American reports that the building itself has a rich history—it was a movie theater in the 1920s
Montgomery’s plans go beyond the restaurant
incorporating an event space next door (pictured below) and additional commercial and residential projects
She’s also secured options on vacant lots in the surrounding area
hoping to attract other entrepreneurs to join revitalization efforts
“Coming Soon” signs for Sweetie Pie’s were spotted on the two buildings
While there’s no confirmed opening date yet
Montgomery shared via text that she’s working hard to make it happen
Montgomery’s career effectively began while she was living in the Pruitt-Igoe housing projects
and co-founded a singing group called the Rhythmettes
a key component of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue during the 1960s
performing as a dancer and background vocalist for legendary artists such as the Rolling Stones
A collapsed lung forced Montgomery to leave the stage
she opened the flagship Sweetie Pie’s soul-food restaurant in Dellwood
later adding locations in The Grove and the Grand Center Arts District with Sweetie Pie’s Upper Crust on Delmar
Montgomery and her family gained national fame through their reality series, Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s, which aired on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. The show became OWN’s most popular series, running for nine seasons, from 2011–2018.
In 2022, the Upper Crust location closed, following the conviction of Montgomery’s son, Tim Norman, for orchestrating the murder of his nephew to collect a fraudulent life insurance payout. Norman was sentenced to life in prison, and Montgomery announced the closure of the restaurant in September 2022 shortly after the verdict.
Despite these challenges, Montgomery remains determined to rebuild. “These are my stomping grounds,” she told The St. Louis American. “This is where I lived, and I’m gonna do whatever I have to do. I’ll sell chicken on the corner if I have to, but I’m gonna make this work!”

The Turks Head is a traditional Victorian pub in St Helens, Merseyside. Built in the 1870s in the Tudor style, it's popular with the locals and has a reputation for award-winning craft beers.
and steady supply of beer aren't enough to attract you
the pub also proudly claims to have the oldest pie in St Helens
Its age is unverified; it was found when the pub was renovated in 2017
Its remarkably well-preserved condition led the owners to display it proudly once the refurbishment was complete
It now rests in an acrylic box on a wooden plinth with the story of its discovery engraved:
"This pie was discovered during renovations of The Turks Head public house (Feb 2017)
It is thought to be the greatest discovery since Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon unearthed Tutankhamun in 1922
We still don't know what mystical powers have been set free in The Turks Head."
St Helens isn't often compared to the Valley of the Kings, so the above claims may be slightly exaggerated. There have yet to be any reports of a curse

The Veyo Pie Shop was a tiny bakery in at tiny town—until Ironman brought in a whole new (and hungry) customer base
Devaney Lomenick opened a small pie shop on the corner of Highway 18 and Center Street in Veyo
Lomenick’s goal was to carry on a piece of local history by making the recipes she learned while working in the bakery at the Veyo Mercantile
When the Merc shut down in 2008 after 50 years of serving the Veyo community
Lomenick opened a standalone pie shop using Yaw’s recipes
For the first six months of the Veyo Pie Shop the business did about as well as a small bakery in a small town could be expected. But suddenly, in January 2010, things picked up—a lot.
“We started experiencing athletes coming in on a daily basis as they cycled through our area,” Lomenick said. “None of us were aware of Ironman until they told us they were preparing for the race in May of 2010.”
The Veyo Pie Shop had to increase their production to keep up with the steady flow of sweaty, spandex-clad customers coming through the shop each day. “It became an adrenaline rush for all of us,” Lomenick said. “It absolutely, 100% greatly affected our business. The athletes blogged and posted on their social media about us locally and internationally, and that catapulted our business worldwide.”
A post shared by Kristi & Ashley (@sweat4sweets)
Even when the full Ironman was shortened to a 70.3 in 2013
athletes still made the pilgrimage up the Gunlock climb to the Veyo Pie Shop
Helmet-clad triathletes from around the world clop-clopped into the shop in their bike cleats for the sweet treat they had heard so much about
and the bakery staff learned the preferences of their mid-ride customers
“All of the athletes that come through our shop have such varied tastes
so our goal is to keep up with a variety of flavors to make them happy when they stop in
and cookies are the favorite things to grab and go
For those who choose not to eat solids while they’re riding
we usually see them at some point afterwards getting a whole pie to share with friends and family.”
The return of the full Ironman St. George in 2022—this time as a world championship race—has brought in a new surge of athletes
and the bakery staff is mixing up a near-continuous stream of flour
the shop will set up a cheering station for athletes with loud speakers and a curated music playlist for the riders to hear as they ride by
During times when business is slow on race day
It’s the very least they can do to reciprocate the support they’ve gotten from triathletes over the years
it’s always been Ironman first,” Lomenick said
“Our appreciation and admiration for the athletes who endure such a competition
and customers who pass by and love what we do is what keeps us going.”

The new pie shop offers a unique take on a beloved classic
I had the opportunity to try the new place on its second day of being open and tried a variety of their products
I grabbed a Pie-3 pack with the flavors "Raspberry Fields Forever," "Peanut Butter is My Jam," and "When Chocolate Met Caramel." I also tried the "Smore’s Flakie" and the "Boom Chika" savory pie
so I was pleasantly surprised at the bang for my buck.
The pie shop itself is small and was busy upon my arrival
with the line stretching in front of the seating area
It made the seating area difficult to reach
the shop had an open atmosphere and was very inviting
The mini pies I tried were delicious but very sweet and definitely meant for no more than two people.

said they were hoping to take advantage of the growing population of Southern Utah and would be able to cater at events in town
“I think we have there's a really nice, diverse population base here too, in terms of ages," Timmons said, noting that people both young and old seemed to be either visiting or moving to the St. George area. It was recently named the fastest-growing metro area in the U.S
"We thought it'd be a great place to get not only try out our brand but also get exposure for the brand,” he added
Timmons and his wife are also expanding right next door with ROCTACO
a street taco-style option that brings in flavors like Argentinian steak and carne asada
The COVID-19 pandemic may have played a role in the growing popularity of the pie shop due to the need for food options that were not meant to share
Having individual pies allowed for customers to still order while not having multiple people touch the same product
“We thought it would be great to let everybody have their own flavor choice and so if you come here with your family
everybody gets their own pie and everybody can have something like
a kid can have an apple and somebody else can have lime," he said
was worth the visit with reasonably priced items and a variety of flavors

Visiting services of the Bishop of Nyundo Diocese and the nearby Saint Pie X Seminary in Western Province
you would thank God that despite all the dreadful recent damages
river Sebeya known to its new alias ‘Bad Neighbor’’ did not kill any student or staff in that institution
On top of landslides across the Western and Northern province respectively
a tributary of Lake Kivu which meanders along the diocese facilities resulted in horrible floods which left 131 dead in Rubavu and other areas
Most of these deaths and losses are blamed on Sebeya
river Sebeya “visited” them at different occasions in the past
Sebeya would come ushered by floods that could be managed for a couple of hours until the river decides to ‘go back home’ after a few hours
it came as a killing machine targeting properties
in charge of movable properties in Nyundo Diocese is one of the people who witnessed the worst experience of Sebeya since the first minute
the guards woke me up and told me that Sebeya was invading us
the water had started to ravage stuff n the floor
and it quickly increased until I was obliged to jump on the cupboard,” he said
A-50 centimeter thick pavement of mud in the Nyundo Diocese packing yard
The water filled up this compound and invaded offices
classes and chapels to mention quite a few
tailoring machines and the carpentry equipment
while others were destroyed to an extent that they are not repairable
Sebeya seen from the gate of Saint Pie Seminary
we have seen a case where Sebeya carries away students’ desks from classrooms and they disappear completely
Community work to clean the Diocese offices
Sebeya did not even spare the students’ kitchen; it destroyed their muvero
proceeded in the storage room and invaded the maize flour
the school noted an increase in water of Sebeya
they advised that those who were sleeping on the ground floor move on the first floor
they left their belongings in their place and Sebeya invaded them
Our Dear Books that we shall never see anymore
because we thought that the rain would even reach us at the upper floor,” said Muhayimana Aimé Serge
a Senior six student at Saint Pie X Seminary
the leadership of the Diocese moved the students at Centre Pastorale
a guest house on the hilltop that was not affected by the floods
They stayed there and afforded a meal at around 4PM
The students remained there until May 7 when they were relocated to Saint Fidele
a school with some classrooms in Gisenyi town which accepted to host them momentarily as the officials work hard to clean the school and bring them back
It was hard to clear that pick up off the mud
the students managed to return to school with quite new books
We all wrote on page one of a new book today,” said Muhayimana who is actually concerned about the national exams without notebooks
but we don’t know how we shall manage since our books have been carried by water.”
a part from losing all his books to Sebeya
he also lost his national ID in the floods
The mattress from the Minor Seminary Saint Pie carried by the flood
and this was acceptable “because so many uniforms were carried away by the floods.”
We were wondering where rescue would come from,” Mugisha Hirwa Bruno
a Senior 3 student said also sharing a concern about his books
the school was quick to inform parents who came to assist them on Sunday May 7 and to bring the basic equipment that they need
Some other schools suffered a lot and they include the Nyundo Art School
neighbours and all the community of Nyundo diocese gathered at the Minor Seminary and the Diocese Service Complex to clear the mud which made a huge stock in the compound
reason why it became bitter against us,” joked one nun during this community work
other affected people are also cursing Sebeya while proposing a solution that would allow them a peaceful cohabitation
Ncamubandi Frederic from Kabirizi cell in Rugerero sector also lost his properties in Sebeya
“All the buildings collapsed in front of our eyes
I lost a piggery of ten animals and a poultry of 25 birds

so that it does not overflow and shed its waters in the neighborhoods
it can be given at least one-meter high wall
This would be a long lasting solution against our bad neighbour Sebeya,” Ncamubandi said
Father Emmanuel Hakizayezu(L) saw the tragedy which befell his diocese’s facilities
Ndamubandi said that the river should not trigger decision to relocate the citizens along its shores
Instead of relocating the traumatised community
you would rather control the river,” he said

State and federal funding continues trickling in for St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport’s (PIE) much-anticipated terminal expansion
which has nearly doubled in cost over the past year
the project’s estimated price range is now between $180 million and $220 million
Airport officials announced a $110 million initiative in January 2024
County Commissioners approved a $1.98 million grant agreement amendment Tuesday with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)
The additional money for an ongoing design phase increases the agency’s total award to $7.98 million
“We are doing several things because we’ve had a 142% increase in growth in 11 years,” said Yvette Aehle
deputy director of finance and administration for PIE
we are still trying to figure out how much all of that is going to cost us.”
Pete-Clearwater International Airport’s (PIE) terminal project
The county-owned airport served less than a million passengers in 2013
That number increased to a record-setting 2.49 million in fiscal year 2023
An FDOT report that same year found that PIE generated a $3.4 billion economic impact and supported 21,000 local jobs. In April 2024, Tom Jewsbury
told commissioners that the “lean and mean” operation remains debt-free
He also noted that PIE continues punching above its weight. The mid-sized facility atypically featured 64 direct flights at the time
while the significantly larger Tampa International Airport (TPA) offered 82
Jewsbury said PIE had $17 million “in the bank” for a $40 million
1,000-space parking garage and will use rental car revenues to offset the remaining cost
Officials previously considered expanding a surface lot
Commissioner Chris Scherer questioned the airport’s progress Tuesday
The initial improvements project still lacks a contractor
and the airport will begin schematic designs by 2026
“As we are allowed to apply for money
A previous rendering of the terminal expansion
PIE has already received $6 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and now has nearly $8 million from FDOT
which brings the total accumulated for the design phase to $23.03 million
Documents state that officials have also applied for a $4.9 million FAA grant
The airport’s share of that grant is $546,106
The documents note that PIE continues requesting additional funding for terminal improvements as it is still “early in the design process and will not have a final guaranteed maximum price until the summer of 2026.” However
costs at similar-sized airports typically range from $1,200 to $2,200 per square foot
which indicates a total of $180 million to $220 million
Aehle noted a “definite” need to enhance and consolidate a security screening checkpoint
PIE will also provide jet bridges so “people won’t have to stand out in the rain during the summertime to board aircraft.”
Aehle said officials will enlarge gate areas and install charging stations
County Administrator Barry Burton elaborated that new jetways
which will directly connect the terminal to planes and eliminate the need to walk outside and up ramps to board
Documents state the FDOT grant would cover consultant and design fees
A site plan highlights a “future apron edge taxiway C.”
Jewsbury previously said concession revenue was up 32% through April 2024
Car rental services provide about $4.5 million annually
Commission Chair Brian Scott noted that 15 million people visited the county in 2023
and the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) discussed offering a tourism-focused shuttle from PIE to the beaches
Jewsbury said it would help accommodate expected exponential growth and could integrate into plans for a new parking garage
That service, dubbed the Grouper
on-demand shuttle service in late February
“We are thrilled to introduce this new transit service
stress-free connection between PIE and world-famous Clearwater Beach,” Scott said in a prepared statement
and ensures travelers can experience our beautiful beaches with greater ease and convenience.”

The year 2022 was a tough one for Sweetie Pie’s, a St. Louis-based soul food restaurant chain, and its famous owner, Robbie Montgomery. After shutting down its last location in September 2022
the restaurant will make its return to the Midwestern city
According to documents posted for a city board meeting
fans of the business can also expect a 160-seat dining area and two event spaces from it
Montgomery announced the closing of her Upper Crust location in September shortly after the verdict was announced.
“Thank you all so much for the many years of support ❤️,” she wrote in a caption with a picture detailing the restaurant closing.
the restaurant had three branches located in St
that location closed on March 20 of this year due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
The news of the new restaurant initially came from St
which shared it on their Facebook page on May 18
Robbie gave us permission to announce that she’s opening up another restaurant again in our city!!!” they wrote
St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) officials have secured funding to complete a $110 million terminal expansion they expect to accommodate one million new passengers
said recent state and federal grants would allow the airport to complete the momentous project without incurring debt
He shared the news with Pinellas County Commissioners at an April 4 work session
Jewsbury said PIE also decided to build a $40 million, 1,000-space parking garage rather than expanding a surface lot
He said the airport has $17 million “in the bank” for the project and will use rental car revenues to offset the remaining cost
“All good news to share with you as far as the direction that airport is going in the course of the next five to 10 years,” Jewsbury said
“We’re very blessed that we’ve seen a lot of positive growth.”
A 2023 Florida Department of Transportation report found that PIE generated a $3.4 billion economic impact and supports nearly 21,000 local jobs
Jewsbury said officials run a “lean and mean” operation that remains debt-free
He noted that PIE now offers 64 direct flights
Allegiant Airlines is the airport’s primary carrier and the fourth largest in Tampa Bay
Jewsbury said the focus is now accommodating recent growth
He said PIE recorded under a million passengers 11 years ago and set a new record with 2.49 million last year
“One thing you have to remember … because everything is nonstop
the mechanics – everybody lives in their community,” Jewsbury explained
picking up the flight and flying out,” he added
“They’re actually contributing to this area.”

Allegiant is acquiring a fleet of Boeing 737s this year
and Jewsbury said PIE would be among the first to receive the new planes
Jewsbury said concession revenue is up 32% in 2024
Rental car services provide $4.5 million annually
“There’s more that happens outside just the terminal and runways,” he said
Commissioner Brian Scott noted that 15 million people visited the county last year
and the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) has discussed offering a tourism-focused shuttle service based at PIE
He asked if the facility could accommodate the increased traffic
and airport officials have discussed incorporating the service into their plans for a new parking garage
“We’re definitely interested in seeing that,” he said
The airfield encompasses about half of the facility’s 22,000 acres
Several businesses also lease the county-owned land
Jewsbury said airport officials continue working to develop vacant parcels
a lack of infrastructure and a propensity for flooding have impeded those efforts
MarineMax proposed building a $38 million manufacturing facility at the airport’s nine-acre Turtle Club property in December 2022
Jewsbury said the company realized the project was not financially viable due to infrastructure costs and “floodplain issues.”
He said airport officials continue exploring other opportunities with Pinellas County Economic Development’s leadership
The vacant 130-acre Airco property is “another thing that developers have their eye on,” Jewsbury added
Recent studies have shown that only 80 acres are developable due to flooding and stormwater challenges
Jewsbury said infrastructure improvements – including roadways
septic and stormwater piping and elevating the land by two-and-a-half feet – would cost around $30 million
He said PIE is now “scaling things back” and focusing on aviation uses
While the Live Local Act allows developers to create affordable and workforce housing on airport property
Jewsbury said the Federal Aviation Administration has ruled that the land is incompatible with residential development due to noise impacts
“The developers – they want to develop it tomorrow,” Jewsbury added
“We’re certainly building towards that
but there’s a lot of challenges …”
If we could get some direct flights to ATL from PIE
I don’t think we need double amount of planes low flying over our house
I can’t even imagine another million people a year
This small airport was has been so smooth to navigate
Have a feeling things are gonna get a bit bit more complicated with this expansion
I am concerned though that Allegiant is buying those Boeings

The handmade pie and Wisconsin cheese specialty shop will have one remaining location.
The Cheese & Pie Mongers in St. Peter will close Jan. 1, business owners Liberty Warren and Timothy Harbo announced.
The second Cheese & Pie Mongers shop will remain open year-round around 25 minutes southwest at the couple's apple orchard, Welsh Heritage Farms in Lake Crystal.
The husband-and-wife duo took over the orchard business from Harbo's parents nine years ago, around the same time they launched the Cheese & Pie Mongers shop in St. Peter.
The second shop, at the apple orchard, opened in 2021.
"It’s been a great experience watching the orchard and the pie shop grow and expand over the years, and we are making the change to close the Saint Peter store in order to put all our focus and energy at the other location," Warren told Bring Me The News. "It’s definitely a change, but it will allow us to continue to grow and expand our business."
In an announcement on Facebook, Warren said they've been stretched thin operating two storefronts. Additionally, the orchard location along Highway 60 offers better parking and more capacity for the business to grow.
"We have simply outgrown our space in St. Peter and with the apple orchard and pie shop growing, we need to direct our time, energy, and resources to that location," she wrote.
As the business begins a new chapter, the Cheese and Pie Mongers at Welsh Heritage Farms will be open year-round, all gift cards will be accepted and pies offered in St. Peter will remain available.
