Pair it with grilled chicken or fish Bonus points for sneaking in some extra greens and vitamins at the same time Patrick’s Day may mean shamrocks and shenanigans but let’s not forget it’s three days away from the start of spring Celebrate with a seasonal asparagus tart that pairs earthy sweet stalks with fontina cheese and puff pastry in a tasty and tangy dish Looking for a delicious main course that doesn’t involve boiled brisket? La Tuque has fully embraced the connection, even featuring a Sorting-Hat-esque emblem on its coat of arms the feather in the town's cap is the popular annual canoe race La Classique internationale de canots de la Mauricie Scazon | Flickr This municipality not only won a Guinness World Record for the "most exclamation marks in a town name," but it probably also has the most Instagrammed road sign in the province so many visitors are charmed by the town's name that the official Saint-Louis-du-Ha government website has added a link right under the main city logo to explain it It turns out that "haha" is an outdated French word for an obstructed route, although the founders of the town seemingly hit no obstacles when choosing to emphasize each "ha" in the town's name with an exclamation point. They also went on to name other geographic sites, like Lac Ha! Ha!, Petit lac Ha! Ha! and Baie des Ha! Ha! It actually pre-dates the Quiet Revolution when the province still suckled at the church's teat and named many places after holy figures — in this case Leather is a major export of the area, north of Trois-Rivières, which attracted the annual Festival Western St-Tite back in the 60s. It still proudly celebrates all things cowboy every September. Dining Sweetie Pie’s one of the city’s most iconic soul food restaurants is planning a return at a brand-new location Back in May 2023, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Sweetie Pie’s founder Robbie Montgomery was working on opening Sweetie Pie’s 2nd Act near the corner of Kingshighway and Dr Martin Luther King Drive in Kingsway East (pictured at right) Montgomery told SLM that the project was in its infancy She anticipated investing nearly $4 million to bring the vision to life Louis Dining In and Dining Out newsletters to stay up-to-date on the local restaurant and culinary scene Then, this November, The St. Louis American confirmed that Montgomery had purchased a vacant building in the 4900 block of MLK Drive Part of the revival was slated to be supported by a $1.5 million grant from the City of St funded through federal pandemic relief aimed at boosting North Side businesses and nonprofits Louis American reports that the building itself has a rich history—it was a movie theater in the 1920s Montgomery’s plans go beyond the restaurant incorporating an event space next door (pictured below) and additional commercial and residential projects She’s also secured options on vacant lots in the surrounding area hoping to attract other entrepreneurs to join revitalization efforts “Coming Soon” signs for Sweetie Pie’s were spotted on the two buildings While there’s no confirmed opening date yet Montgomery shared via text that she’s working hard to make it happen Montgomery’s career effectively began while she was living in the Pruitt-Igoe housing projects and co-founded a singing group called the Rhythmettes a key component of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue during the 1960s performing as a dancer and background vocalist for legendary artists such as the Rolling Stones A collapsed lung forced Montgomery to leave the stage she opened the flagship Sweetie Pie’s soul-food restaurant in Dellwood later adding locations in The Grove and the Grand Center Arts District with Sweetie Pie’s Upper Crust on Delmar Montgomery and her family gained national fame through their reality series, Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s, which aired on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. The show became OWN’s most popular series, running for nine seasons, from 2011–2018. In 2022, the Upper Crust location closed, following the conviction of Montgomery’s son, Tim Norman, for orchestrating the murder of his nephew to collect a fraudulent life insurance payout. Norman was sentenced to life in prison, and Montgomery announced the closure of the restaurant in September 2022 shortly after the verdict. Despite these challenges, Montgomery remains determined to rebuild. “These are my stomping grounds,” she told The St. Louis American. “This is where I lived, and I’m gonna do whatever I have to do. I’ll sell chicken on the corner if I have to, but I’m gonna make this work!” Listen Here Listen Here Listen Here Listen Here DINING NEWSLETTERS Subscribe to the St. Louis Dining In and Dining Out newsletters to stay up-to-date on the local restaurant and culinary scene. But suddenly, in January 2010, things picked up—a lot. “We started experiencing athletes coming in on a daily basis as they cycled through our area,” Lomenick said. “None of us were aware of Ironman until they told us they were preparing for the race in May of 2010.” The Veyo Pie Shop had to increase their production to keep up with the steady flow of sweaty, spandex-clad customers coming through the shop each day. “It became an adrenaline rush for all of us,” Lomenick said. “It absolutely, 100% greatly affected our business. The athletes blogged and posted on their social media about us locally and internationally, and that catapulted our business worldwide.” A post shared by Kristi & Ashley (@sweat4sweets) Even when the full Ironman was shortened to a 70.3 in 2013 athletes still made the pilgrimage up the Gunlock climb to the Veyo Pie Shop Helmet-clad triathletes from around the world clop-clopped into the shop in their bike cleats for the sweet treat they had heard so much about and the bakery staff learned the preferences of their mid-ride customers “All of the athletes that come through our shop have such varied tastes so our goal is to keep up with a variety of flavors to make them happy when they stop in and cookies are the favorite things to grab and go For those who choose not to eat solids while they’re riding we usually see them at some point afterwards getting a whole pie to share with friends and family.” The return of the full Ironman St. George in 2022—this time as a world championship race—has brought in a new surge of athletes and the bakery staff is mixing up a near-continuous stream of flour the shop will set up a cheering station for athletes with loud speakers and a curated music playlist for the riders to hear as they ride by During times when business is slow on race day It’s the very least they can do to reciprocate the support they’ve gotten from triathletes over the years it’s always been Ironman first,” Lomenick said “Our appreciation and admiration for the athletes who endure such a competition and customers who pass by and love what we do is what keeps us going.” RELATED: What Spectators Need to Know About the Ironman St. George World Championship Course Can’t get enough Ironman World Championship coverage? I also tried the "Smore’s Flakie" and the "Boom Chika" savory pie so I was pleasantly surprised at the bang for my buck.  The pie shop itself is small and was busy upon my arrival with the line stretching in front of the seating area It made the seating area difficult to reach the shop had an open atmosphere and was very inviting The mini pies I tried were delicious but very sweet and definitely meant for no more than two people.  already had returning customers on its second day as many were either interested in trying a savory pie or just something different said they were hoping to take advantage of the growing population of Southern Utah and would be able to cater at events in town “I think we have there's a really nice, diverse population base here too, in terms of ages," Timmons said, noting that people both young and old seemed to be either visiting or moving to the St. George area. In April 2024, Tom Jewsbury told commissioners that the “lean and mean” operation remains debt-free He also noted that PIE continues punching above its weight. The mid-sized facility atypically featured 64 direct flights at the time while the significantly larger Tampa International Airport (TPA) offered 82 Jewsbury said PIE had $17 million “in the bank” for a $40 million 1,000-space parking garage and will use rental car revenues to offset the remaining cost Officials previously considered expanding a surface lot Commissioner Chris Scherer questioned the airport’s progress Tuesday The initial improvements project still lacks a contractor and the airport will begin schematic designs by 2026 “As we are allowed to apply for money A previous rendering of the terminal expansion PIE has already received $6 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and now has nearly $8 million from FDOT which brings the total accumulated for the design phase to $23.03 million Documents state that officials have also applied for a $4.9 million FAA grant The airport’s share of that grant is $546,106 The documents note that PIE continues requesting additional funding for terminal improvements as it is still “early in the design process and will not have a final guaranteed maximum price until the summer of 2026.” However costs at similar-sized airports typically range from $1,200 to $2,200 per square foot which indicates a total of $180 million to $220 million Aehle noted a “definite” need to enhance and consolidate a security screening checkpoint PIE will also provide jet bridges so “people won’t have to stand out in the rain during the summertime to board aircraft.” Aehle said officials will enlarge gate areas and install charging stations County Administrator Barry Burton elaborated that new jetways which will directly connect the terminal to planes and eliminate the need to walk outside and up ramps to board Documents state the FDOT grant would cover consultant and design fees A site plan highlights a “future apron edge taxiway C.” Jewsbury previously said concession revenue was up 32% through April 2024 Car rental services provide about $4.5 million annually Commission Chair Brian Scott noted that 15 million people visited the county in 2023 and the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) discussed offering a tourism-focused shuttle from PIE to the beaches Jewsbury said it would help accommodate expected exponential growth and could integrate into plans for a new parking garage That service, dubbed the Grouper on-demand shuttle service in late February “We are thrilled to introduce this new transit service stress-free connection between PIE and world-famous Clearwater Beach,” Scott said in a prepared statement and ensures travelers can experience our beautiful beaches with greater ease and convenience.” HOW TO KEEP THE COSTS MANAGEABLE WITH SUCH PROJECTS IS ALWAYS A CONCERN Add your idea below. After shutting down its last location in September 2022 the restaurant will make its return to the Midwestern city According to documents posted for a city board meeting fans of the business can also expect a 160-seat dining area and two event spaces from it Montgomery announced the closing of her Upper Crust location in September shortly after the verdict was announced.  “Thank you all so much for the many years of support ❤️,” she wrote in a caption with a picture detailing the restaurant closing.  the restaurant had three branches located in St that location closed on March 20 of this year due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The news of the new restaurant initially came from St which shared it on their Facebook page on May 18 Robbie gave us permission to announce that she’s opening up another restaurant again in our city!!!” they wrote St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) officials have secured funding to complete a $110 million terminal expansion they expect to accommodate one million new passengers said recent state and federal grants would allow the airport to complete the momentous project without incurring debt He shared the news with Pinellas County Commissioners at an April 4 work session Jewsbury said PIE also decided to build a $40 million, 1,000-space parking garage rather than expanding a surface lot He said the airport has $17 million “in the bank” for the project and will use rental car revenues to offset the remaining cost “All good news to share with you as far as the direction that airport is going in the course of the next five to 10 years,” Jewsbury said “We’re very blessed that we’ve seen a lot of positive growth.” A 2023 Florida Department of Transportation report found that PIE generated a $3.4 billion economic impact and supports nearly 21,000 local jobs Jewsbury said officials run a “lean and mean” operation that remains debt-free He noted that PIE now offers 64 direct flights Allegiant Airlines is the airport’s primary carrier and the fourth largest in Tampa Bay Jewsbury said the focus is now accommodating recent growth He said PIE recorded under a million passengers 11 years ago and set a new record with 2.49 million last year “One thing you have to remember … because everything is nonstop the mechanics – everybody lives in their community,” Jewsbury explained picking up the flight and flying out,” he added “They’re actually contributing to this area.” Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport Allegiant is acquiring a fleet of Boeing 737s this year and Jewsbury said PIE would be among the first to receive the new planes Jewsbury said concession revenue is up 32% in 2024 Rental car services provide $4.5 million annually “There’s more that happens outside just the terminal and runways,” he said Commissioner Brian Scott noted that 15 million people visited the county last year and the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) has discussed offering a tourism-focused shuttle service based at PIE He asked if the facility could accommodate the increased traffic and airport officials have discussed incorporating the service into their plans for a new parking garage “We’re definitely interested in seeing that,” he said The airfield encompasses about half of the facility’s 22,000 acres Several businesses also lease the county-owned land Jewsbury said airport officials continue working to develop vacant parcels a lack of infrastructure and a propensity for flooding have impeded those efforts MarineMax proposed building a $38 million manufacturing facility at the airport’s nine-acre Turtle Club property in December 2022 Jewsbury said the company realized the project was not financially viable due to infrastructure costs and “floodplain issues.” He said airport officials continue exploring other opportunities with Pinellas County Economic Development’s leadership The vacant 130-acre Airco property is “another thing that developers have their eye on,” Jewsbury added Recent studies have shown that only 80 acres are developable due to flooding and stormwater challenges Jewsbury said infrastructure improvements – including roadways septic and stormwater piping and elevating the land by two-and-a-half feet – would cost around $30 million He said PIE is now “scaling things back” and focusing on aviation uses While the Live Local Act allows developers to create affordable and workforce housing on airport property Jewsbury said the Federal Aviation Administration has ruled that the land is incompatible with residential development due to noise impacts “The developers – they want to develop it tomorrow,” Jewsbury added “We’re certainly building towards that but there’s a lot of challenges …” If we could get some direct flights to ATL from PIE I don’t think we need double amount of planes low flying over our house I can’t even imagine another million people a year This small airport was has been so smooth to navigate Have a feeling things are gonna get a bit bit more complicated with this expansion I am concerned though that Allegiant is buying those Boeings We know about all the cutting corners that Boeing has done Another example of the handmade pie and Wisconsin cheese specialty shop will have one remaining location. The Cheese & Pie Mongers in St. Peter will close Jan. 1, business owners Liberty Warren and Timothy Harbo announced.  The second Cheese & Pie Mongers shop will remain open year-round around 25 minutes southwest at the couple's apple orchard, Welsh Heritage Farms in Lake Crystal.  The husband-and-wife duo took over the orchard business from Harbo's parents nine years ago, around the same time they launched the Cheese & Pie Mongers shop in St. Peter.  The second shop, at the apple orchard, opened in 2021.  "It’s been a great experience watching the orchard and the pie shop grow and expand over the years, and we are making the change to close the Saint Peter store in order to put all our focus and energy at the other location," Warren told Bring Me The News. "It’s definitely a change, but it will allow us to continue to grow and expand our business."  In an announcement on Facebook, Warren said they've been stretched thin operating two storefronts. Additionally, the orchard location along Highway 60 offers better parking and more capacity for the business to grow.  "We have simply outgrown our space in St. Peter and with the apple orchard and pie shop growing, we need to direct our time, energy, and resources to that location," she wrote.  As the business begins a new chapter, the Cheese and Pie Mongers at Welsh Heritage Farms will be open year-round, all gift cards will be accepted and pies offered in St. Peter will remain available.  By  Christine Schuster is a St saying he'd killed the mother of his child which features a swimming beach and splash pad COMMUNITY PARTNER Stay connected to All Things Good in the Burg by subscribing today.
