Montreal
head to one of the city's coolest beaches this summer
grab a beach chair and don’t forget the sunscreen
Photograph: Clock Tower Beach | Freddy ArciniegasClock Tower Beach is located right in Montreal’s Old Port
making it the ideal spot to unwind after a long day without having to venture too far from the city centre
The urban beach venue is essentially part bar and part park
trading in traditional terrasse seating in favor of sand
A little slice of the city reminiscent of the French Rivieria
it’s also a great spot to watch the International Fireworks Festival
Located on picturesque Lac St-Louis at the mouth of the Soulanges canal, Village Des Écluses—just 40 minutes from downtown Montreal—has it all: sandy beach; kayaks and paddle boards for rent; outdoor terrasse with beer garden vibes and camping for those who want to spend the night
Plage Saint-ZotiqueThis might just be the most beautiful beach in Québec
Located about an hour outside of Montréal
this long stretch of fine sand is dotted with tiki-style thatched huts and flanked by crystal-clear water
A celebration of the beach’s 40th anniversary this year promises a summer full of live music
The restaurant and ice cream shop have got you covered
Daphne CaronIt might not technically be a beach
but Vague à Guy (“Guy’s Wave”) is one of the best spots in the city for surfing
The wave is stationary thanks to the rocky relief of the St
and once you’re in the rapids you can stay indefinitely on an endless standing wave
Located in Lasalle’s Parc des Rapides (20 minutes south of downtown Montreal)
it’s important to note that the city doesn’t supervise this area
so make sure you use the (experienced) buddy system.
Photograph: Yves KeroackLocated about half an hour from downtown Montreal, this nature park feels more like a hidden gem in the country than a big city suburb, and the beach here is no exception. Come here for a more relaxed, secluded beach day and enjoy some impromptu birdwatching between dips in the blue.
Photograph: Courtesy Yelp/Dan P.Pointe-Calumet Beach has become synonymous with Beach Club, the rowdy adult-only outdoor club, but the beach is actually divided into two sections: One for those who are down for day drinking and dancing, while the other is for families and those looking for a more laid-back day in the sun. If you’re going for the Top Gun-esque volleyball experience during your next day at the beach, this is the spot.
Photograph: Courtesy RécréoParcA little less than half an hour outside of the city centre, RécréoParc Beach boasts natural sand, supervised swimming and lake-like water. While folks tend to flock here in the summer for an urban camping experience, there’s also an indoor restaurant on the premises for those who need a break from the sand and sun, or at least to grab a drink before heading back out into it.

The crystal-clear water and surrounding greenery are almost enough to feel as though you’ve escaped to The Laurentians without leaving the city.
Photograph: Courtesy Yelp/Bobby A.While not exactly the sandy locale you might expect, these waterfalls an hour north of the city supply a secluded spot by Lac Masson for dipping in the frothy water of its naturally formed pools. It’s rocky but has all the trappings of a relaxing beach. While it’s open to all to bring picnics and parties, it’s also a popular dating and hookup spot, so be respectful if you plan on visiting—or suggest a trip there on Grindr.
Photograph: D. Gordon E. RobertsonAn hour’s drive westward from the city centre, this provincial park’s an easy roadtrip that worth the drive. It sports four beaches in total along the Ottawa River and each have their own water sport rentals, showers and spots to barbecue. Couple that with the fishing opportunities, playgrounds for the kids and spots to camp to find that a daytrip here can easily turn into a weekend getaway.

the Ville de Saint-Zotique is finally moving ahead with the extension of 20th Street
the municipal council approved a resolution authorizing payment of $930,608.
The municipal administration wishes to obtain a government certificate of authorization from the Ministère de l'Environnement
de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques
de la Faune et des Parcs for the extension of 20th Street
Under section 46.0.5 of the Environment Quality Act
the Ministry has determined that this project affects a wetland or water body.
In return for the ministerial authorization
the Town will contribute $930,608 to obtain the MELCCFP's approval for this extension
which will benefit Saint-Zotique's economic development and population growth
The expense will be financed and paid from the unallocated surplus
Following the unanimous adoption of the resolution
Mayor Yvon Chiasson said he was pleased to see the file moving in the right direction.
"It will ease traffic on Route 338 when the extension is completed
We're going to extend it all the way behind the O'St-François residence
We're going to connect them all together
It's a project that goes back a long way
Legault's administration was already talking about it
We have two years to do the work once we have the certificate," he said

a property unlike any other has appeared on the real estate market: the Saint-Zotique golf course
has been put up for sale for $22.5 million
which is of concern to a number of residents
was discussed at the regular meeting of the municipal council on Tuesday
The property covers almost 5 million square feet
and is located in the heart of the village core
A citizen who lives near the golf course asked Mayor Yvon Chiasson about this issue during the time allotted to citizens in the audience.
“What is the City's plan should the golf course be sold
How can we be sure we won't have hundreds of neighbors all at once?” he asked.
he approached the municipal council about our interest in dezoning the area
which currently only allows for recreational projects
He recently approached us again to inform us that the business is no longer profitable and that he would like to develop a residential project there
no project has been submitted to the council for this site
which is not a done deal considering the asking price,” he began
the city maintains that it won't let just any project go ahead
“We'll make sure the project includes green spaces
The last thing we want is to end up with just apartment blocks and further bog down the road network
There are many stages to go through before a project for this lot is submitted and accepted by the elected officials
We'd like any future residential development on this site to include walking trails
so that citizens can continue to enjoy them in some way,” he added.
Councillor Éric Lachance pointed out that the developer of this future project will have to comply with several standards and rules in force to develop the site as a residential project
every body of water on the site will have to have a riparian buffer strip.
pointed out that the file was far from finished
“It's going to take a lot to convince the current municipal council of the merits of a residential project on the golf site
I'd have to see at least 30% of this green space preserved for me to be in favor
So it's not done at all,” he concluded

the Ville de Saint-Zotique celebrated the official inauguration of its brand-new Pumptrack
built last autumn in the Parc Quatre-Saisons
which took place during the family festival
marked the opening of this long-awaited facility
The recently completed Pumptrack is a modern facility that allows skateboarders
scooterists and in-line skaters to learn and have fun in complete safety
This initiative offers a free activity open to all
encouraging young people to adopt active lifestyles and explore new sporting skills
close to the new École Secondaire des Navigateurs
tennis/pickleball courts and refrigerated skating rink
the Pumptrack fits perfectly into this dynamic sports hub
accompanied by elected municipal officials and the Director of Recreation
officially cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the Pumptrack
The festive event was attended by many residents
who were delighted to discover this new facility.
The Plage de Saint-Zotique is taking another step towards universal accessibility with the installation of a Mobi-mat mat that will enable people with reduced mobility or disabilities to enjoy the Beach
Environmentally-friendly and remarkably effective
these semi-rigid mats made from recycled marine plastic unfold to create a flat path to the shoreline
The acquisition of this new installation was made possible by a sponsorship from Corona Canada and its project A Commitment to Accessible Paradise
Corona Canada will also install Mobi-Chairs bathing chairs
floating amphibious chairs to help people get around in the water
as well as Mobi-Decks rigid access slabs and sturdy panels to create multi-purpose areas
“Our installation will facilitate access to the beach with its ‘Mobi-mat’ carpet
An ecological and remarkably efficient mat
semi-rigid and made from recycled marine plastic
it unfolds to create a flat path to the lake
We've also acquired a “Mobi-Chairs” swimming chair
a floating amphibious chair to help people get around in the water
as well as “Mobi-Decks” rigid access slabs
sturdy panels for creating multi-purpose areas
everyone will be able to take full advantage of the beach
a unique facility in the region,” says Isabelle Dalcourt
the new facilities will enable the entire population to enjoy the Plage de Saint-Zotique from the moment it opens on June 15
Keen to make Quatre-Saisons Park a sports venue
Saint-Zotique's elected officials approved two expenditures in this direction at the regular municipal council meeting on Tuesday
It will be used to award a contract to Synthetic Experts for the installation of a dek field hockey surface on the refrigerated ice rink for the 2025 season.
It will also be used to purchase concrete blocks to maintain the rink's outer boards
The expense will be financed and paid from the unrestricted surplus.
"The refrigerated rink already provides a large part of the facilities required for dek field hockey
It's a growing sport that's played on a smaller surface
we can't accommodate a reduced surface
there's much less impact on users if we convert it to a duk field hockey surface
Since the refrigerated rink is a source of revenue for us
we decided to go ahead with this project," explains District 2 Councillor Yannick Guay
Mayor Yvon Chiasson indicated that the city had measured the return on investment of this installation
We understand that not all Saint-Zotique residents will use it
the investment was well worth it," said District 2 Councillor Yannick Guay.
elected officials also approved another expenditure of $59,005.17
This sum will be used to purchase anti-pigeon netting for the roof of the refrigerated ice rink
"Since the opening of this infrastructure
causing holes and requiring extra maintenance in winter
they have to clean the lights and the surface to make it usable
It's the only way to get them off the roof
The expense will also be paid from the unallocated surplus
a number of municipalities in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region
have contacted Hydro-Québec in connection with frequent power outages on their respective territories
the municipality's incessant requests to the Société d'État prompted the latter to rebuild the Saint-Polycarpe substation.
Les Coteaux asked Hydro-Québec to carry out an analysis of the electricity distribution infrastructures supplying Les Coteaux and to provide a detailed report
the locality obtained answers from the Société d'État concerning the quality of electricity service on its territory
in response to municipal resolution 24-12-8886 adopted in December 2024
Hydro-Québec reports that 2024 saw a significant reduction in outages
residents of Les Coteaux experienced the fewest outages and triggers in the last five years
residents experienced less than 53 minutes of outages during normal operating times
according to information provided by Hydro-Québec
When major weather events are taken into account
this figure rises to around 3 hours,” reads the response sent to the municipal administration
a year in which a number of weather-related events caused numerous power outages
totaling nearly 63 hours of outages for our territory
vegetation control and adaptation to climate change
These efforts are aimed at preventing outages and strengthening the network's resilience to extreme weather events.”
Hydro-Québec would like to remind residents that they can report any service quality problems directly to their customer service department
The Municipality of Les Coteaux is attentive to the concerns of its residents
and will continue to monitor the situation to keep them informed of actions taken to guarantee the quality of electricity service on the territory
incessant requests from the municipal administration
prompted Hydro-Québec to rebuild the power substation serving the locality
Rivière-Beaudette has been making repeated representations to Hydro-Québec.
“If the MRC is able to predict the population growth the region will face in ten years' time
but since the overhaul of the Saint-Polycarpe substation
we'd like to see better control of vegetation on our territory
but in terms of electrical availability and network reliability since the overhaul of the Saint-Polycarpe substation
things are a lot better,” says Mayor Patrick Bousez
who says he's wholeheartedly behind the Municipalité des Coteaux in this matter.
a single power line has served the Alta industrial park in Coteau-du-Lac
pending the opening of a new substation at its heart
whose primary mission will be to supply power to the park.
“I'm confident that when it comes on stream in a few years' time
it will take the load off the Saint-Polycarpe substation
which has already reached its maximum capacity
It won't be a problem once it's up and running,” he adds.
The City of Coteau-du-Lac is confident
Coteau-du-Lac confirms that it will not be taking any steps to request an analysis of the electrical network supplying the town of Coteau-du-Lac
the municipal administration did ask Hydro to maintain the vegetation that comes significantly close to the lines in certain places
but there has been no specific request on this subject
“We are aware that the construction of the new substation in our industrial park will considerably strengthen the Town's power supply,” we wrote by e-mail.
Ville de Saint-Zotique states that it is a forerunner in this field
commissioned a private firm to produce a survey of the canopy in conflict with the hydroelectric network
This report was submitted to Hydro-Québec in the summer of 2023
The Ville de Saint-Zotique has even opened a file with Hydro-Québec for each of the properties affected,” we read.

Phase 1 of the project will include 70 rental units and will be delivered
" A total of 140 units will be for rent
as we have another real estate project not far from here," explains Marc Lefort
the partner responsible for marketing the project
is scheduled for completion by spring 2026
" We have a good list of people interested in Phase 1
A special event will be held for them in July
It's best to sign up via the project's website so you don't miss out on any project-related news," he added
The project will also include common spaces such as a gym & wellness studio
a community garden and underground parking

Ottera took advantage of the official ground-breaking ceremony to make financial contributions totalling $10,000 to two local causes in connection with the project's arrival in Saint-Zotique
The first is the Riveraine elementary school
located not far from the real estate project
The money will be used to build a synthetic soccer field in the school's backyard
The other $5,000 was donated to Centraide Sud-Ouest

who took up the challenge by kayaking the 250 kilometers between Montreal and Quebec City.
the $500,000 goal set by the organizers was surpassed
a total of $555,145.98 has been raised.
Jeunes musiciens du monde is an organization that helps young people from high-risk backgrounds to develop their socio-emotional skills and project themselves positively into the future through the free learning of music
Jeunes musiciens du monde aims to help each student develop a sense of social belonging
with a view to finding the motivation he or she needs to realize their dreams and participate constructively in something greater than themselves
“We left the Old Port of Montreal on Thursday
We covered an average of 60 kilometers a day
about 30 km in the morning and the same in the afternoon
There were 200 of us taking part in this unique escapade,” he begins
noting that each participant had to raise $2,000 before setting off.
Why did the young man let himself be tempted by this experience
I decided to sign up because I'm very involved in extracurricular sports
I'm not at all a musician at heart (laughs)
but I completely embrace the mission of Jeunes musiciens du monde
I also believe in the positive impact of a passion in a young person's life,” confides the man who heads the organization that manages the Centre sportif Soulanges in Saint-Polycarpe.
the Défi Kayak Desgagnés is the most physically and mentally challenging adventure he has ever taken part in
“I wanted to get out of my comfort zone for the cause
It's important because it gives young people from disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds access to music lessons in their schools via teachers
but there are also social workers who can help them through their issues.”
What impressed him most about this first participation
“We were able to learn more about the concrete impact of this challenge
because one of the former beneficiaries of Jeunes musiciens du monde
who was able to take music lessons thanks to this sporting initiative
It was really cool to hear him tell us about his experience.”
What does he take away from the experience
“That even if you think a challenge is unattainable
Lawrence River from Montreal to Quebec City
you can succeed if you're well supervised and put in the effort
I'd like to thank the volunteers and organizers of the challenge.Everything was well organized and safe for us
We had a superb experience thanks to them.”
“I'm going to take a break from kayaking
but I'm not saying no to taking on another sporting challenge for a good cause.”
Vincent Lemieux invites those close to young people who would like to take music lessons not to hesitate to contact Jeunes musiciens du monde for help and support. If necessary
the organization's staff will refer young people to other resources likely to help them better.

A new invasive species has been discovered in the waters of Lake Saint-François
more specifically in the Saint-Zotique area
by the Ministère de l'Environnement
The tubenose goby is a predator of eggs and larvae of species native to the environment in which it settles
It also competes with other bottom-feeding fish
Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are difficult to control once established in an environment
Invasion patterns known elsewhere for the tubenose goby
suggest that its abundance could gradually increase and that its ultimate distribution could cover the entire fluvial portion of the St
This is the first time this invasive species has been observed in Quebec
The observation was made by the Ministry as part of its Réseau de suivi ichtyologique (RSI)
the tubenose goby was introduced to North America in the St
in the 1990s through the discharge of ballast water from ships sailing from Europe
it has spread short distances from its place of introduction
The most likely hypothesis for the arrival of the tubenose goby in Quebec is expansion from Lake Ontario down the St
Since the roundnose goby is still very rare in Quebec
anglers are asked to report any sightings of this species to the Ministère de l'Environnement du Québec
Lawrence river system can be better documented
citizens can contact the Ministère by calling 1 877 346-6763
or by contacting the wildlife directorate in their region.
that if an angler believes he has caught an invasive species such as the tubenose goby
he must return the fish to the water if he does not wish to keep it for his own consumption
The aim is to prevent the unnecessary death of native fish that have been misidentified
How can we help prevent the spread of this species
because once the species has become established in a body of water
it is virtually impossible to eradicate it
costly action with no guarantee of success
The public can help prevent the introduction and spread of this invasive species by practicing responsible fishing and leisure activities
in particular by respecting the ban on the use of live bait fish in Quebec
has been shown to use boat hulls as habitat
It is therefore possible to transport adult gobies or their eggs on your boat without noticing
cleaning and drying boats and equipment are among the methods for preventing the introduction of aquatic invasive species that can be easily applied at any time

A new life-saving tool that can prevent injuries and drownings when a firefighter takes part in a water rescue was demonstrated at Saint Zotique beach on June 21
two Saint Zotique firefighters left shore aboard zodiac boats
Firefighter Jean Latour played the role of victim and dove into the water
which was remotely controlled by other firefighters on land
retrieved Latour and brought him back to shore safely
It was the first demonstration of the rescue device in Quebec
Fire department officials from Saint Zotique
Salaberry de Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion watched the rescue as it unfolded.
"I'm very impressed with what I saw
but it's strong and easy to control and operate remotely," said Michel Pitre
Director of the Saint Zotique fire department
"It's a useful tool that can help prevent firefighter deaths like those that happened last year in Montreal and more recently in Charlevoix," he added
The Saint Zotique fire department responds to about 10 water rescue calls each year
"There are fewer interventions during the summer because the Coast Guard is present but we take over in the fall," said Pitre
Pitre told Neomedia he could see the potential of the $11,500 device
We already have a few ideas in mind about how we could use it," he said
The Dolphin 1 is a 33-pound remote controlled lifebuoy that can carry one or more victims with a combined weight up to 500 pounds
It can also communicate with persons who are in distress
The battery-powered device was created by Hong Kong-based OceanAlpha Group to helps firefighters and emergency crews perform water rescues
It is described as a "self-powered electric water rescue sled steered by remote control
It's an innovative technology that bridges the gap between traditional foam buoys and jet skis
cheaper to deploy and safer for lifeguards."
"The Dolphin 1 has already been been purchased by several fire departments in Canada
mostly in Ontario and British Columbia
We've sold some to Hamilton and Burlington in recent weeks," said Denis Joanisse from Rossbro Engineering in Lachute
"Today's simulation was for emergency responders but the device can also be used on beaches
reservoirs or outfitters that are far from major centres or a fire department," said Joanisse
