the beloved saint of the Corsican peoplePixeldom | Shutterstock
Julia (known also as Julie) was born in the ancient city of Carthage
her master brought her to Nonza in the north of Corsica
picturesque village is a church with a bright pink exterior
Everyone in this quiet spot overlooking the Mediterranean knows her story
enjoying an easy lifestyle in the North African city of Carthage
was taken prisoner and sold as a slave to a pagan man named Eusebius (not to be confused with the Eusebius who wrote the Ecclesiastical Histories and who lived from 260-339)
He observed her devotion to prayer and the love of God
When Eusebius set out for Gaul – the name of modern-day France -- he took Julie with him
where a feast with local pagans was organized
Eusebius reportedly got drunk at the feast
the celebrants seizing Julie and tried to force her to worship an idol
continuing instead to invoke her love of Christ
A Vatican News article recounts how these torments only made the saint confess her faith with more ardor:
“who for love for me has endured the torment of the flagellation
For if my Lord was crowned with thorns for me
wherefore ought I refuse to let my hair be torn from my head as price for the confession of my faith
that I might be worthy to seize the palm of martyrdom?”
Julie’s feast day is May 22; she is a recognized as a virgin martyr who remained steadfast in her beliefs to the end
inhabitants of Nonza gather to celebrate her life of this female saint
Constantly invaded and often occupied throughout the Middle Ages
the little island faced attacks from the Greeks
Corsica is a region of France – a popular holiday spot that is also very close to Italy
And since both countries have ruled Corscia in the past
its culture is a delightful mix of both.
One thing that holidaymakers must not do in Corscia is to hurry
much more so than the mainland French who flock here during the summer months
Corsican food is based on the principal of terroir
a French word that signifies that the food is locally produced
What’s great about the food here is that agricultural methods and preparations are based primarily on tradition and not industrialized processes
Here are some of the key ingredients in Corsican dishes:
Shepherds make Corsican cheese exclusively from sheep and goat’s milk - animals raised on grassy plains
Cheeses vary from soft and subtle to rich and creamy
The Genoese introduced the chestnut tree to Corsica; as a result
many traditional dishes use chestnuts as a base
Handpicked and dried chestnuts can be ground into flour and used for making polenta
Chestnut flour combined with malt makes a popular amber beer
Cold-cut meats from Corsica are extremely popular
What's unique is that the meat comes from wild or farmed pigs fed on natural scrubland plants
Corsica has numerous olive groves and produces six varieties of olives that make good quality olive oil
Corsica is a land of tradition and culture
Julie did not spend much time on the island
her humility and the remarkable values she lived throughout her short life were recognized by the people of Corsica and have had an impact on the culture
Julie was proclaimed patroness of Corsica by a decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites on August 5

The Supreme Court set Ville de Sainte-Julie v
the city of Ville de Sainte-Julie applied with the Commission de protection du territoire agricole du Québec to exclude from an agricultural zone a certain area of land where the respondent’s lots were located
the respondent asked the city mayor to make an offer corresponding to the present value of an area of land covered by an agreement between the city and Promotion M.G
The parties failed to come to an understanding
The respondent filed an application asking the court to fix a term for the agreement and to order the city to pay damages
The Quebec Superior Court dismissed this application
The Quebec Court of Appeal allowed the respondent’s appeal
The present case before the Supreme Court involved issues concerning provisions of the Civil Code of Quebec relating to contractual obligations
The Supreme Court scheduled His Majesty the King v
police officers found the respondent asleep in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle
They detected a strong smell of alcohol upon opening the car doors
the officers arrested him for care or control of a motor vehicle with an excessive blood alcohol level
The respondent refused to give a breath sample at the police station
which prompted a charge of failure to comply with a peace officer’s demand for a breath sample

The Quebec Court of Appeal dismissed the appellant’s appeal
The appeal court found the jury instructions correct in the context of this case
the judge did not need to address the appellant’s guilt relating to the manslaughter verdict because he had conceded his guilt
The appeal court scheduled Library of Parliament v
This matter concerned the renewal of expired collective agreements for two bargaining units
An arbitration board panel of the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board issued an interest arbitral award tackling outstanding issues between the parties that collective bargaining failed to resolve
These outstanding issues were referred to interest arbitration under the Parliamentary Employment and Staff Relations Act
The present judicial review application challenged certain parts of the interest arbitral award
the applicant in this case brought an action against the respondent under ss
The applicant argued that the respondent breached s
41 by failing to take positive measures to ensure the adoption of a French version of the constitutional text in the Schedule to the Constitution Act
The respondent wanted to stay this proceeding until a final resolution of another matter pending before the Quebec Superior Court
considering the similarity of the remedy requested in both cases
The applicant opposed the respondent’s motion
He argued that dismissal of the motion and a continuance of the proceedings would serve the interests of justice because the basis of his claim and the issues that he raised were distinct from those involved in the case pending with the Quebec court
On Jan. 30, 2025, in Marleau v. Canada (Justice), 2025 CF 184, the Federal Court dismissed the motion of the respondent
The court held that the defendant failed to show that staying the proceedings would serve the interests of justice in the circumstances

The Canadian singer-songwriter’s Order of Canada was terminated by Governor General Mary Simon earlier this month
said Governor General Mary Simon had ended the appointment on Jan
The government’s official publication
Singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie’s appointment to the Order of Canada has been terminated by the Governor General
said Governor General Mary Simon had ended the appointment on Jan
and was signed by the Secretary General of the Order of Canada
A reason for the termination was not given
“The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General does not comment on the specifics of termination cases,” the Governor’s General told the Star in an emailed statement
The Star attempted to contact Sainte-Marie through her management office and publicist but did not immediately hear back
the termination follows a CBC investigation that raised doubts about Sainte-Marie’s Indigenous heritage
Sainte-Marie’s Indigenous culture was a central part of her identity as she rose to fame in the 1960s
and she was won awards including multiple Junos and the Polaris Music Prize in 2015
CBC reported in October 2023 that it found Sainte-Marie’s birth certificate
which says she was born in 1941 in Massachusetts
The document lists the baby and parents as white and includes a signature of an attending physician — information CBC says is corroborated by Sainte-Marie’s marriage certificate
also told CBC that Sainte-Marie was not adopted and does not have Indigenous ancestry
maintaining she has never lied about her identity
and the CBC report was full of mistakes and omissions
calling the story an attack on her character
“Being an ‘Indian’ has little to do with sperm tracking and colonial record keeping: it has to do with community
who loves you and who’s your family,” Sainte-Marie
said in a written statement to The Canadian Press
Sainte-Marie said she “will not stoop to respond to every false allegation.”
she said it was common for birth certificates to be “created” after Indigenous children were adopted or taken away from their families
She said she used a birth certificate throughout her life that was the only document she had

One of Canada’s largest patio door makers is selling out to the family behind the country’s leading garage door manufacturer in a play to keep the company in domestic hands
has teamed up with Fonds de solidarité FTQ and Quebec’s investment arm
Each company generates roughly $500-million in annual sales
Terms were not disclosed but two sources familiar with the transaction said the buyers are paying more than $500-million for Novatech
The Globe and Mail is not identifying the sources as they are not authorized to discuss the matter
Garaga and Novatech were both founded in the early 1980s by Michel Gendreau and New Brunswick native Raymond Ouellet
The two knew each other for years but never competed: While Garaga made garage doors
Novatech started out making decorative door glass before expanding into patio and steel doors
the two companies co-ordinated product development and marketing efforts to sell matching doors for their different purposes
Garaga bought plants in Oklahoma in 2018 and Minnesota last year
increasing its share of sales from the U.S
while Novatech has purchased four companies in the past five years
Mike Silagadze’s Ether.fi soars as ether owners pile in to hot crypto startup
Gendreau passed leadership of Garaga to twin sons Maxime and Martin (daughter Isabelle manages the family office)
who ceded the CEO job to long-time employee Harold Savard 12 years ago
asking if he’d be interested in buying his company
including a 30-per-cent stake owned by the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec since 2012
“It was very important for us to continue the business in Canada,” said Mr. Savard, who will remain CEO of Novatech and run it as a stand-alone business with existing management. “We didn’t want to go to market and make a deal with private equity from the U.S. It was very important for us to keep our head office here, in Quebec
Maxime Gendreau said his family will become majority owners of Novatech through their holding company
IQ and the Fonds are contributing more than $150-million combined in debt and equity for their minority stake
Savard will roll over his small equity stake into the acquired company
“It was very important to get patient investors so we could assure we’d maintain ownership” for many years to come
He said his family plans “to hold the company for the long term and offer the same stability Mr
Ouellet offered Novatech” for more than 40 years

MontrealNewsTwo charged with criminal negligence over famous Montreal alligator, which later bit toddlerBy Selena RossPublished: October 22, 2020 at 4:55PM EDT
Workers finish aluminum poles at the ALU MC3 factory
a Quebec producer of metal poles and supports for lighting and signage
There are roughly 1,700 companies shaping aluminum into components or finished products in Quebec
cranking out everything you can think of with the malleable metal – from ambulance doors to window frames
Half of them are based in the greater Montreal area
And all of them have one major problem at the moment: Donald Trump
Industry groups have been warning for weeks of the pain to come from the U.S. President’s 25-per-cent tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel
But on the factory floors of Quebec’s aluminum-product makers
and in the hallways and offices of manufacturers where net profit margins are typically in the single digits and payrolls rarely tally more than 200 employees
Trump’s tariffs on steel, aluminum set to drive up costs for North American car buyers and manufacturers
“These are businesses that were operating well
that were in expansion mode,” said François Racine
president of industry lobby group AluQuébec
they find themselves penalized against American rivals who make mostly the same things they do
Some companies have been forced to lay off staff or cut their hours after losing contracts in recent weeks with U.S
Others are scrambling to find workarounds to minimize the damage
lives have been upended by a president who has said the United States needs “nothing” that Canada makes
Trump ordered and later mostly suspended – tariffs he said were tied to Canada’s failure to stop fentanyl smuggling and illegal immigration to the United States
the chief executive officer of Bousquet Technologies in Sainte-Julie
has led the company’s rapid ascent in recent years
as it scaled up operations to three sites and boosted annual revenue to about $50-million
He also made a bet: That the United States
which now represents about 20 per cent of sales
would drive all of the company’s next-stage growth
president and CEO of Bousquet Technologies
at the company's factory in Ste-Julie
had been the focus of intense sales efforts by the CEO’s team over the past 12 months
who are specialized distributors selling to contractors
have been spooked by the tariffs and are scouting for other suppliers because they want to maintain their own profit levels
the levies are pricing him out of the market
Bousquet builds ventilation and energy recovery systems
cost upward of $100,000 each and come in sizes as big as 12 feet by 12 feet
You’ll see them on building roofs across cityscapes
The boxes were an easy sell in New York State and Massachusetts because of the high cost of power in those states
Bousquet’s heat exchange systems piled up big energy savings for customers
that business has lost steam – and the result is visible on the shop floor
while new contracts aren’t coming in as quickly as before
Lamarche now has holes in his production schedule and has had to change up his staffing as a result
Bousquet’s work force had already been trimmed from 180 to about 165
as people who left in recent months were not replaced
the company moved its factory personnel to four days a week
with workers receiving employment insurance benefits for a portion of lost wages under the federal government’s work-sharing program
The CEO is clearheaded about his strategy going forward
controlled by private-equity firm W Investments
will reorganize its supply chain to try to avoid using materials being routed through the United States
And it will lower the prices of its U.S.-destined units
swallowing a big chunk of the tariff in a bid to maintain its U.S
Workers at the Bousquet factory build ventilation and energy recovery units
each of which costs upwards of $100,000.ROGER LEMOYNE/The Globe and Mail
“Our objective is to stay in our clients’ faces
sell at a lower margin and be ready for the aftermath,” Mr
adding that his Canadian business should help offset the U.S
Just down the highway from Bousquet is the headquarters of Cyrell AMP
a maker of architectural panels for building exteriors whose projects include Toronto’s Pinnacle One Yonge
The company is a specialist in “wild” custom aluminum work
the director of marketing and strategic development
It uses 3-D modelling techniques to execute things some other companies wouldn’t touch
Cyrell launched in 1999 and had been on a tear of late
with annual revenue growth of 40 per cent boosted by business in both Canada and the United States
The manufacturer moved to a site in Beloeil three years ago and doubled its operational footprint
It does about $25-million in annual revenue and employs 80 people
“There were contracts we could have clinched but that we didn’t get in the end because there’s too much instability out there,” Ms
“Our clients were scared of having to pay 25 per cent more so they turned elsewhere.” She estimates that trade war volatility has cost the company between $1.5-million and $2-million so far in lost sales
Management has taken action in a bid to preserve cash
cutting staffing by 10 per cent and reducing weekly factory hours from 40 to 35 – here
“I think people are happy to keep their jobs
“We’ve got folks who’ve come to us and said they’ll have to take delivery work at DoorDash to make ends meet.”
So what are Cyrell’s options to get back on track and fill in what’s been lost in the United States
but that market already has an established stable of local panel makers
that’s also an alternative never before considered
“It’s just been easier for us to do business in Boston than Halifax,” Ms
The company has also begun to consider what else it can do with its factory equipment
eyeing a push into other lines of business
Workers finish highway overhead structures (top) and aluminum poles at the ALU MC3 factory
ALU MC3 is another manufacturer that had finally found its footing coming out of the pandemic
The Sainte-Julie maker of aluminum traffic light poles and highway signalization supports was booking a steady stream of orders from government transport departments and carving out new business with developers of residential neighbourhoods in U.S
About a quarter of current sales are with American customers – an order book the company won by positioning itself as cheaper and faster to deliver than U.S
The business ($12-million in annual revenue
45 employees) tends to run against economic cycles
a finance whiz who owns the company with his father and serves as vice-president
Quebec aluminum-good makers are now getting squeezed from all sides
That’s chiefly because the metal can cross the border several times before it’s made into a finished product
He said he and other processors are paying more for primary aluminum
because prices are generally tied to the London Metal Exchange and a tariff is added via what’s known as the Midwest premium
General director and vice-president Bruno Montgrain at the ALU MC3 factory.ROGER LEMOYNE/The Globe and Mail
they’re facing a Canadian countertariff if they bring in the aluminum extrusions they need from the United States
they’re hit with the 25-per-cent import levy on any finished wares they sell in the U.S
Montgrain is looking for ways to maintain ALU MC3’s momentum
He says he’s not laying off staff because he needs brains and brawn to keep growing
His focus at the moment is on finding tariff exemptions and offsets and getting a clear picture of what he’ll be dealing with
He thinks he’s found one loophole he can use
if you source your aluminum extrusions from a supplier that uses aluminum melted and cast in the United States
import tariff only applies to the portion of the value you added by turning it into a finished product
It’s not a miracle solution but it might dull the pain
“We’re not going to buy raw material for a contract that we don’t even know we can make at a reasonable price,” he said of the rapidly changing situation

the rules are pretty darn specific – swimming caps must be worn at all times
has been visiting his local pool in Sainte-Julie
when the facility began demanding he wear a swim cap
Marcotte (did I mention he’s bald?) refused to adopt the new requirement
which then resulted in the local police personally escorting him from the Sainte-Julie Aquatic Center
Surprised by the lengths the center went to enforce the rule
“The managing director of the pool asked everybody with hair or no hair to put on a swim cap
It’s the first time in 15 years they received police at this place
I asked the police if they made me stop swimming because I was over the speed limit.” (enter chuckle)
the facility indicated the new regulation requiring swim caps is to promote hygiene and water quality
which can be caused by loose hair in the water
as anyone involved in the sport of swimming can attest
one’s head is not the only part of the body covered in hair
Which leads one to wonder if the Saint-Julie Aquatic Center will soon begin requiring Thorpedo-style bodysuits for a nice leisurely Sunday afternoon float

I know the sign in the picture is just a file photo and not directly related to this story
but I gotta comment on the “wait 3 hours after eating to enter the pool.” What competitive swimmer could possible follow that rule
The only time I’ve gone 3 hours without eating is when I’m asleep
There are some smart sporty ones that are not hot or sticky
Plus they are almost always more attractive than a bald head
I have come to the conclusion that ALL recreational / lap swimmers over 30 look better with more coverage
This includes a cap worn well down the forehead & dark lens goggles
but the pool staff were always very polite about it
I actually accumulated quite a collection of caps because I always forgot to pack one and ended up buying new ones
Never had this experience of being asked to wear a cap anywhere in Canada
