MontrealNewsResidents feel helpless as their cottages on Ile Sainte-Therese are set to be demolishedBy Olivia O'MalleyPublished: August 07, 2024 at 8:47PM EDT

Thérèse had a profound experience of intimate union with God
which she described as a “complete conversion.” Almost a year later
in a papal audience during a pilgrimage to Rome
she asked for and obtained permission from Pope Leo XIII to enter the Carmelite Monastery at the young age of 15
she devoted herself to living a life of holiness
doing all things with love and childlike trust in God
but decided to make an effort to be charitable to all
She performed little acts of charity always
and little sacrifices not caring how unimportant they seemed
These acts helped her come to a deeper understanding of her vocation
She wrote in her autobiography that she had always dreamed of being a missionary
a martyr – yet she was a nun in a quiet cloister in France
I understood that the Church had a Heart and that this Heart was burning with love
I knew that one love drove the members of the Church to action
the apostles would have proclaimed the Gospel no longer
the martyrs would have shed their blood no more
I understood that Love comprised all vocations
that it embraced all times and places...in a word
at last I have found it...My vocation is Love!”
Thérèse offered herself as a sacrificial victim to the merciful Love of God on June 9
the feast of the Most Holy Trinity and the following year
on the night between Holy Thursday and Good Friday
she noticed the first symptoms of Tuberculosis
Thérèse recognized in her illness the mysterious visitation of the divine Spouse and welcomed the suffering as an answer to her offering the previous year
She also began to undergo a terrible trial of faith which lasted until her death a year and a half later
I love you,’ are the seal of her life,” said Pope John Paul II
millions have been inspired by her ‘little way’ of loving God and neighbor
Many miracles have been attributed to her intercession
She had predicted during her earthly life that “My Heaven will be spent doing good on Earth.”
Saint Thérèse was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997 - 100 years after her death at the age of 24
She is only the third woman to be so proclaimed
after Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Teresa of Avila
'You know well enough that Our Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our actions

— Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is finalizing a major project to conserve a series of wetlands totalling 14 hectares located on Sainte-Thérèse Island in the heart of the St
conducted on a Government of Quebec property with high ecological value
was initiated through a financial contribution of $200,000 from the Ministry of Forests
and Parks (MFFP) and a $50,000 contribution from TC Energy
The Sainte-Thérèse Island project was designed to upgrade the water level control facilities which were originally built in the early 1980s and had reached the end of their useful life
DUC took the opportunity to build two spawning sites for turtles
a species found in the area and designated as vulnerable under Quebec’s Act Respecting Threatened or Vulnerable Species
Located in a 131-hectare protected area consisting of ponds and wildlands
is part of an impressive network of quality habitats for wildlife and plants
making the island a sanctuary for the handful of islanders who live there
“Sainte-Thérèse Island is one of the very few places restored and protected from urban development on the outskirts of Montreal,” says Sébastien Rioux
DUC’s director of provincial operations in Quebec
“Through the work carried out over the past year
we will maintain the quality of the wildlife habitats
but also the variety of extraordinary landscapes that can be seen there
It is a priceless legacy for our society as a whole.”
when DUC approached TC Energy for financial assistance to bring this conservation project to fruition
The company demonstrated how important the conservation of quality wetlands is to the organization
It joined forces with the MFFP and DUC to maintain this valuable environmental asset
“The Ministry is pleased to rely on Ducks Unlimited Canada’s expertise and on the support of engaged companies like TC Energy to protect our wetlands
The restored facilities on Sainte‑Thérèse Island will protect its ecosystems and ensure quality habitat for wildlife
which is perfectly consistent with MFFP’s mission
I therefore celebrate the efforts of all these stakeholders who are collectively committed to wildlife and its habitats.”
“TC Energy’s collaboration with Ducks Unlimited Canada and MFFP is a fine example of a partnership that helps preserve the quality of the environment
all these partnerships are valuable because they are necessary to achieve a mission that can truly enhance Quebec’s ability to conserve areas of exceptional richness in terms of biodiversity.”
“Sustainability is not something new to us; rather
it’s a continuous evolution of our principled approach to creating enduring economic and societal value while protecting the planet
Our partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada to support this ecologically significant wetland in Quebec is part of our long-standing commitment to protecting ecologically sensitive landscapes and restoring important wildlife habitats in the communities we call home.”
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is the leader in wetland conservation. A registered charity, DUC partners with government, industry, non-profit organizations and landowners to conserve wetlands that are critical to waterfowl, wildlife and the environment. www.ducks.ca

Thérèse’s feast day is not on September 30Fr
when a saint is recognized in the Catholic Church
their feast day is assigned to the day of their death. This day would technically be the anniversary of their entrance into Heaven
In other words it would be their "heavenly birthday."
as the Church has canonized thousands of saints over the centuries and it is impossible to assign each saint on the liturgical calendar to the precise date of their death
Thérèse were to be celebrated on her date of death
The 2004 Roman Martyrology mentions her on this day:
anniversary of the death of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus
Thérèse on September 30 is that it is also the feast day 0f St
Jerome on the universal calendar of the Catholic Church
as he is recognized as a Doctor of the Church
who is the "Apostle of the Franks." This was a major feast in France at the time
October 2 was taken by the feast of the Guardian Angels
and so initially her feast was celebrated on October 3
but was the closest "open" day in the Church's universal calendar
Thérèse was becoming one of the most popular saints of modern times
and when the liturgical calendar was reordered
Remigius (who was not as well-known in the universal Church) was removed from the general calendar and St
This was the closest the Church could get to September 30
Some say that October 1 was her first "full" day in Heaven
though technically there are no "days" in Heaven
Thérèse with a day that made the most sense and which respected other important days on the calendar

municipal officials revealed the latest development plans for Montreal’s Île Sainte-Thérèse
It’s an island nestled between the neighbourhood of Pointe-aux-Trembles and the suburb of Varennes
And it’s slated to be transformed into an urban oasis where Montrealers can connect with nature through agrotourism
walking and cycling trails and designated picnic areas
Mock-ups depict happy families enjoying the future amenities of Île Sainte-Thérèse
But what they don't tell you is that residents of dozens of family cottages were evicted from the island to make room for the park after a seven-year court battle
With the help of a team of ethnographic researchers at Concordia
the voices of those who have called Île Sainte-Thérèse home for more than a hundred years are fighting to be heard and remembered
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, news first emerged about the evictions of Île Sainte-Thérèse. This sparked the interest of Kregg Hetherington, director of the Concordia Ethnography Lab at the Milieux Institute
At the end of 2021, a group of researchers led by Hetherington and his student, John Neufeld
met with residents of Île Sainte-Thérèse to learn more about their plight
"We reached out to them and were overwhelmed by their generosity
even at a moment of grief at losing the island," Hetherington explains
"Still shaken by the loss of their land
they told us that one of the biggest blows was the erasure of their history
Soon after, Hetherington and his team of graduate students published "An Island Is More Than a Park," a detailed ethnographic study based on their interactions and interviews with local residents that delves into the multi-layered history of the island and what led to its current fate
predominantly working-class Quebecois families
had historical ties to the island dating back to the late 19th century
where generations of families would enjoy island life
which envisioned transforming it into a public park
When the master plan for such a transformation was unveiled in 2012
it was easy to overlook the residents' long-standing presence and their historical significance
"Despite having lived on the island for decades
residents never had any formal deeds," Hetherington explains
"Mix this with the fact that many of the cottages are not very attractive and that there is no running water or electricity on the island
and it was easy to frame the residents as unwanted squatters instead of people with deep ties to Île Sainte-Thérèse."
a master's student in anthropology who worked with the residents of Île Sainte-Thérèse
the redevelopment of the island exemplifies how smart and green cities are turning citizens into "users."
but users of the technologies and infrastructures of urban life
The fact that the presence of the residents of Île Sainte-Thérèse is denied demonstrates that 'green' living in the city is increasingly becoming a luxury."
Though residents have lost their fight and will ultimately be evicted
they continue to fight to be remembered and consulted on the future of the island
there is a sad irony to the transformation of Île Sainte-Thérèse
residents were never against the island being turned into a park
they had been calling for decades on the city and province to pay more attention to Île Sainte-Thérèse,” he notes
they told these same residents they had a few months to leave
that tries to protect the creatures and landscapes on the island
but also recognizes the possibility that people might have a place in the natural environment."

Thérèse unleashed a spiritual revolutionManuel Cohen / AFP
It’s simply revolutionary," explains Carmelite priest Denis-Marie Ghesquière to Aleteia
“We didn’t have to wait for Thérèse’s beatification to be able to recite it as a prayer — what’s more
with a plenary indulgence granted by the Church!”
Why such haste? Why does St. Thérèse's offering of herself to God's merciful love express the essence of a fully realized Christian life
And in what sense does it mark not only a summit of her spirituality
we must go back to that day in Lisieux: June 9
Thérèse was living the most luminous period of her life. Her sister Céline had finally entered the Carmel of Lisieux
this decision was not as clear as it has been for her other sisters who were already Carmelites
Thérèse had a new responsibility within the community that she was very happy about
Mother Agnes asked Thérèse to write down her childhood memories
Her retrospective look at her life helps her realize how much Jesus loved her first
even before she responded with her own love
She was about to experience a moment of enlightenment
June 9 that year promised to be a beautiful summer day. At 5:30 a.m., daylight was streaming through the window of Thérèse's cell, while silence still reigned in the community. "Ah, it's the feast of the Holy Trinity," Thérèse noted joyfully before going to breakfast
As she prepared for the 8:00 Mass, Thérèse recalled the obituary of a Carmelite sister, read the day before in the refectory. Sister Ana Maria de Jesus had spent her life feeling guilty, repeating that "she didn’t have enough merits." (The Jansenist heresy had affected the spiritual life of the faithful in France at this time.)
Thérèse had been deeply affected by this news and couldn’t stop thinking about it
What was the origin of this fashion among the nuns of offering themselves as victims to God’s justice to divert to themselves the punishments reserved for unrepentant sinners
Although such an attitude was "great and generous" and mortifications didn’t frighten her
little Thérèse sensed the ambiguity of such exercises
which often prevented people from responding to the call of love
"How can we forget that, in any case, mercy prevails over justice, because Jesus paid for all sins? Between justice and mercy
that very morning the Carmelite nun felt ready to take the opposite path
She understood that Jesus wanted to be loved
For Thérèse it was a true revelation: Jesus
she offered herself interiorly to his merciful love
Thérèse led her surprised sister Céline to the reception room of the convent
I would like to offer myself and Céline to the merciful love of God."
quickly explained to Céline what she was talking about
Then she returned to her cell to write the text of the offering
Céline was convinced of the importance of what was happening
This is fundamental for Thérèse: Her offering is in communion with Celine
It means that she is in communion "with all" and "for all."
On Tuesday, June 11, kneeling with her sister before Our Lady of the Smile
she prayed the offering again from the bottom of her heart
But this time the offering became missionary
because it was for the salvation of others

La Croix offers an opportunity to discover or rediscover sanctuaries that attract many pilgrims
dedicated to the saintly couple Louis and Zélie Martin
parents of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus
A tour through the town invites visitors to walk in the footsteps of these modern saints
from their childhood to their meetings and workplaces
the Alençon sanctuary is focused on families
lost four of them before they reached the age of reason
the Martins resonate with families facing difficulties
A new generation of pilgrims in their 30s and 40s
still in the early years of marriage and parenthood
then we came here to Alençon for a retreat
and we had our first child,” they recounted
The Normans are parents of four children aged five to ten months
they visit the sanctuary every year at the beginning of summer
“It's our way of starting the vacation and thanking God
“honoring the family in all its realities,” said Grégoire Moreau
These retreats are primarily intended for couples hoping for children
His motto: “Comfort those who are doing well
Margaux and Thibault know the Alençon sanctuary well because “they owe it a lot.” After marrying young
their honeymoon didn't last and was clouded over in the months following their union
“We just couldn't get along,” said the young woman from Lyon
The couple's daily life quickly became strained—he moved in with a friend
Margaux went to Alençon and asked the Martin couple for “the grace of marriage.” A year later
the couple was doing better and had reunited under the same roof
many couples and families come to lay down their personal and professional burdens
“Louis and Zélie demonstrated that one could become a saint very simply by honoring family and professional responsibilities without doing great deeds,” continued Guy Fournier
Through the importance they placed on hospitality and charity
modern examples of a path to holiness within marriage and family life
the Martin couple illustrated the possibility of “following the entirety of Christ's life” while remaining entirely in the world
They can also reach out to people affected by mental illness
as Zélie's writings reveal her struggles with anxiety and depression
and Louis ended his life in a psychiatric hospital
“The holy spouses Louis Martin and Marie-Azélie Guérin practiced Christian service in the family
creating day by day an environment of faith and love which nurtured the vocations of their daughters
among whom was Saint Therese of the Child Jesus
The radiant witness of these new saints inspires us to persevere in joyful service to our brothers and sisters
trusting in the help of God and the maternal protection of Mary
may they now watch over us and sustain us by their powerful intercession.”
Homily by Pope Francis during the canonization of Louis and Zélie Martin in 2015

Paccar operates one of Quebec’s industrial gems in Sainte-Thérèse — a 425,000 sq.-ft
facility that manufactures medium-duty Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks
and has assembled more than 245,000 trucks since opening
although that’s down from a possible 75 trucks per shift because of several component shortages linked to supply chain difficulties
It also remains one of Paccar’s most advanced assembly operations
The OEM’s 2.1-meter cabs have since 2020 been made on a fully robotic line
where individual robots glide through their perfectly synchronized tasks
And the plant itself is the only Paccar facility equipped for laser cutting — technology that makes it possible to drill a hole per second
The site has clearly come a long way since the building was home to the Sicard snowblower business
we went to PMG Technologies’ main test track in Blainville for a first-hand look at some of the units produced on the assembly line
joined me for a few laps around the track and a walkaround of a Model 536 (Class 6) Peterbilt
My first impression after climbing into the cab: the visibility is excellent
The large glass surfaces and sloped hood offer a clear look at the space in front of the truck
“This is an important aspect for a pickup and delivery truck in the city,” Hall says
adding that the windshield is 64% larger and the side windows are 35% larger than on the previous Peterbilt model.
Another observation: the cab is really quiet
No wind noise enters the cab and you can barely hear the engine humming
Hall explains that the air intake is mounted on the engine and not on the firewall
We were able to talk normally at cruising speed.
A lot of work went into the seven-inch digital display that sits behind the steering wheel
placing automotive-like multi-function controls at the driver’s fingertips. “It keeps your eyes on the road at all times
Sometimes safety is about the little things,” Hall says.
Unlike the blue backlighting typically found in vehicle displays
Peterbilt’s use of amber backlighting is also easy on the eyes
Customer feedback played a key role in the layout of features like the B Panel on the dash
“Customer input was very important in the design of this truck
Customers who come from both the pickup and delivery segment and the vocational segment … have very different needs,” Hall says
An air brake knob that’s placed within easy reach is an example of design features that make a difference
the wrist will get tired and injuries like tendonitis can result,” he says
The most-used controls are placed closest to the driver
while those that aren’t touched much during the day — such as the radio and HVAC controls — are further back.
but there is an open storage compartment “because customers have said the glovebox opening panel tends to break or loosen up.”
All Peterbilt medium-duty trucks feature the new aluminum cab with a width of 2.1 meters and a roof height of 74 inches for the flat-top version
and 78 inches for the curved roof (four inches higher than the previous version)
The new cab is eight inches wider than the previous generation and allows three adults to sit comfortably.
Peterbilt opted for a D-shaped fuel tank that maximizes available fuel volumes
The steps are also non-slip and perforated so that no debris can accumulate on them.
The three-piece composite hood is easy to open
requiring 15 pounds of pulling effort compared to 65 pounds for the previous model
A locking feature prevents the hood from inadvertently closing as well
Recognizing the importance of ease of maintenance and uptime
Peterbilt engineers developed a three-piece bumper option that allows only the damaged section to be changed in the event of a breakage
The headlight design allows a bulb to be changed in less than five minutes
the front collision radar is protected in the bumper to avoid having to recalibrate it in the event of a collision
and the mirrors are mounted on the cab instead of the door to ensure greater long-term stability.

Roman Catholic Church of Sainte-Thérèse in Poitiers Amateur photo featured in La Nouvelle Republic Bereft parishioners in a French town found a statue of Mary beheaded and church benches set ablaze on Tuesday (May 14)
less than two months after a report surfaced of nearly 1,000 hate-crimes against Christians last year in France
Local firefighters put out the fire before removing the charred benches and chairs from the Roman Catholic Church of Sainte-Thérèse in Poitiers, reported La Nouvelle République
who in July celebrates 50 years in the priesthood
noticed nothing suspicious when he arrived at 8:30 a.m
I had an appointment with a fire safety officer,” Jadaud told La Nouvelle République
The church temporarily closed to the public
and the incident forced a funeral service to relocate to Migné-Auxances
It was not the first time vandals have targeted the church building
as a church official in 2022 found other decapitated statues
The vandalism followed a report of nearly 1,000 hate crimes against followers of Christ in France in 2023
according to an official from the French Ministry of Interior
France’s Ministry of the Interior and Overseas published statistics showing that racist
xenophobic or anti-religious crimes and offenses increased by 32 percent in 2023
The publication did not specify how many of those were anti-Christian hate crimes
Camille Chaize, a spokeswoman for the ministry, confirmed almost 1,000 known anti-Christian hate crimes an interview with French Christian radio station fcr.fr
Responding to a question from the radio host about incidents affecting Christians
she said 90 percent of them targeted properties such as church buildings and cemeteries
The remaining 10 percent involved attacks on 84 Christians
although it was not clear if the assaults were verbal or physical
The Ministry of the Interior, which issued the original report that Chaize cited
“the majority of these crimes and offenses as well as these fines
provocations or defamation (61 percent of offenses and almost all of the fines).”
national police and gendarmerie services recorded 15,000 offenses of an anti-religious
authorities nationwide mobilized 10,000 security forces for Holy Week at Easter
according to the Observatory for Intolerance and Hatred Against Christians in Europe (OIDACE)
Despite the lack of specificity from the French government on the nature of the anti-Christian hate crimes
the increase in such incidents in recent decades remains “concerning,” said Anja Hoffmann
Christians from the country have reported both violence and pressure from different sources
Hoffmann told Christian Daily International
the French laicité often translates into a radical secularism demanding an exclusion of religion from the public sphere and one’s job
which can amount to restrictions of religious freedom,” Hoffmann said
there are certain areas classified as neighborhoods under the influence of radical Islam where being a Christian or a Christian convert is often met with intimidation
OIDACE recorded “quite worrying cases of anti-Christian hate crimes in France” since the beginning of this year, she said. This includes five arson attacks, several cases of severe vandalism and the defacing of public crosses and even a cemetery with Islamist writings that included the slogan
Hoffmann said that French police have ramped up security around Christian festivals such as Easter because of the worrying trend for church buildings and celebration feasts “to become targets for terrorism and violence in the country.”
“According to French police data from the past years
anti-Christian hate crimes amount to almost three incidents per day
with a rather stable number of around 1,000 anti-Christian hate crimes recorded per year,” she added.May 21
2024 correction: an earlier image featured in this article showed St George’s Church in Descartes in France that was not a target of hate crime

The Carmel of Lisieux, in France’s northwestern Normandy region, announced July 18 that it was affiliating with a Carmelite federation covering northern France
“Following discernment between the Carmelite community of Lisieux and the Carmelite order in the face of the difficulties encountered by the sisters in maintaining their daily life
the Carmelite community of Lisieux is now affiliated to the Fédération Thérèse-Elisabeth des Carmélites de France-Nord
involving profound changes in the life of the Carmel,” it said
The Carmel said that due to the changes, Lauds (morning prayer) and Vespers (evening prayer) will generally no longer be celebrated in the Carmel chapel from July 17. But Masses will continue to follow the current timetable
According to the French Catholic newspaper La Croix
the community has 14 sisters but has not received new vocations for several years
The newspaper said that eight sisters are expected to leave the Carmel, with some resettling in retirement homes. Six will remain to ensure the continuity of the community founded in 1835
The Fédération Thérèse-Elisabeth des Carmélites de France-Nord, which brings together 32 Carmelite foundations in France
seeks to “foster communion and mutual aid” between monasteries
as well as to promote “the contemplative life specific to Carmelites.”

Today Pope Francis has shared the apostolic letter he wrote on the French Carmelite nun, St. Thérèse de Lisieux. He has never shied away from his admiration for the saint who died at the age of 24. In fact, in an interview with the homeless, the Pope cited her as his favorite saint
It's not overly surprising that the Pontiff is so fond of this 19th-century religious
If you were to describe her in a few words
Thérèse of the Child Jesus of the Holy Face certainly is someone to admire
From a very young age she knew she wanted a religious life. A path that would allow her to devote her time to loving and serving God. At the age of 14 she was so impatient to join the Carmelites that on a trip to Rome with her father she asked Pope Leo XIII for his permission
he told her: "You will enter if it is God's Will." Unperturbed
she continued in her prayers and the Little Flower joined the Carmel community at just 15
where she surrendered herself entirely to God until her death from tuberculosis
If you look at the short life of Thérèse you can see she was a child who knew what she wanted
such was her confidence that God was guiding her soul and her actions
This can be seen not only in her desire to join a religious life at such a young age, but how her complete love and trust in God led her to be a little too audacious. This was something Pope Francis pointed out in a general audience in November 2022:
When Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus visited the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem in Rome at the age of 14
she tried to touch the nail venerated there
one of the nails with which Jesus was crucified
Thérèse understood her daring as a transport of love and confidence
But the Lord sees the depths of our hearts
He knows my intention was pure […] I acted with him as a child who believes everything is permissible and who considers the Father’s treasures their own.'"
And it is her unwavering confidence in God's love and mercy that can inspire us all in our daily lives
but if we look at the life of the Little Flower
God was the fire in her soul that led her to take such bold moves at such a young age
you can try to approach a tricky situation with the same audacity as Thérèse did
so you can reach out to her directly for a little confidence boost.)

it became the target of an attempted arson
This is the second time this week that the Sainte-Thérèse business has been attacked and follows an incident in which shots were fired at Primeau's Laval condo building (La Presse was first to report that story)
Speaking to MTL Blog sister publication Narcity Québec
Régie intermunicipale de police Thérèse-De Blainville (RIPTB) Assistant Director Luc Larocque could not confirm the name of the enterprise targeted by the Thursday night arson attack but did confirm it was the same business that was subject to an attack earlier in the week
A news release from the RIPTB explains two plainclothes officers discovered the fire in front of a business after hearing a noise at around 12:30 a.m
The officers observed individuals in front of the business who subsequently fled on foot
Police were able to arrest one of those individuals
a man in his 40s who is set to meet with investigators Friday
police are trying to understand the connection between both incidents at Slice Gang
announced Thursday he would temporarily retreat from public life pending the investigation into all of these events
"I can no longer exclude the possibility that I am the target of attacks," he wrote on Instagram
I'm choosing to take a step back and therefore be less present in public in the coming weeks." He thanks followers for their support

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is officially celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Thérèse Martin – St. Thérèse of Lisieux
she became a Discalced Carmelite nun and lived until the age of 24 in the cloistered Carmelite convent of Lisieux
rector of the Shrine of Alençon (Thérèse’s hometown)
have worked and continue to work in the fields of education
UNESCO also hopes this tribute brings greater visibility and justice to women who have promoted the values of peace through their actions and works
Given the fame of Thérèse de Lisieux in the Catholic community (the city of Lisieux being the second place of pilgrimage in France after Lourdes)
the celebration of her birthday can be an opportunity to highlight the important roles women play in society
It also reinforces UNESCO’s stress on the importance of culture in the promotion of universal values and as a vector of interreligious dialogue
The posthumously published works of the Carmelite saint
and doctor of the church are considered as important as those of other French writers of the 19th century
including Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant
A woman of heroic virtue, Thérèse lived during the peak of the industrial revolution. And although she entered the Carmel in 1888 when she was just 15 years old (and died in 1897, only 9 years after she became a nun), “her works show an integral humanism advocating for solidarity, justice, and peace between peoples, at the service of a call to universal love,” UNESCO's press release reads
The publication of the critical edition of her works was honored by the Académie Française in 1989 with the Grand Prix du Cardinal Grente
A bill for the assembly of two decades-old models — one from a defunct marque — will come due on April 1
And unlike much of the debts written off during General Motors’ bankruptcy
a major subsidiary now has to pay this chunk back
was handed to GM Canada back in 1987 to save the Montreal-area Sainte-Thérèse Assembly plant
GM Canada used that bankroll to build the stunningly sexy Chevrolet Celebrity and Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
It later cranked out the last Pontiac Firebirds and fourth-generation Chevrolet Camaros
The thing about 30-year interest-free loans is that someone eventually comes to collect
outstanding loans held by GM Canada prior to 2009 are still active
its Canadian division slashed its workforce and dealer network in a desperate effort to reduce costs
but media north of the border soon began asking questions about taxpayer cash handed out long ago
GM Canada still intended to repay the $220 million offered up by the Canadian and Quebec government
having been torn down and the land since turned into a big-box retail mall
Sainte-Thérèse Assembly opened in 1965
building Chevrolet Biscaynes before moving on to H- and G-body vehicles in the 1970s and ’80s
When poor quality and labor strife threatened to shutter the facility
the federal and provincial government intervened
It was then decided the plant should be retooled to build Chevrolet Celebrity and Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera models
another reprieve — Camaro and Firebird production ran from 1993 to 2002
Following the most recent round of labor negotiations, GM pledged $554 million for its Canadian operations. While the possibility of government cash arose, last month GM said it wasn’t necessary for the projects it had in mind
While discussing the matter with the Globe and Mail
GM Canada president Stephen Carlisle claimed the company would indeed pay back the loan on its due date — April 1
The payment comes at an opportune time for Canada, which just pledged an interest-free loan to another crucial Montreal-area business apparently in need of propping up
can you add the adjective ‘stunningly sexy’ before the first mention of Cutlass Ciera?” I was happy to oblige
More by Steph Willems
I had a string of three of these Cutlass's as company cars An 85, 88, and 90. The 88 was the same color as the coupe pictured. The 88 was the best one of all. It was outfitted with handling suspension, aluminium wheels, and the 3.8 V6. It would smoke the front tires.

medium-duty truck plant has won a Frost & Sullivan award for manufacturing leadership
The award recognizes production technology advancements
and was won for the plant’s frame transfer efficiency improvement project
Paccar says the project takes advantage of automated guided vehicle (AGV) technology to increase frame assembly capacity
The replacement of an above-ground conveyor by an AGV conveyance system created more space for assembly tasks; enhanced ergonomics; reduced downtime; and optimized the flow of operations
The system is designed to accommodate a broad variety of station content
and is easily adaptable to different production requirements
“The employees at the Paccar Ste-Therese plant are especially dedicated to building the industry’s highest quality medium duty trucks
The plant implements initiatives driven through innovation to achieve continuous improvement and enhanced quality for fleets and truck operators who purchase Kenworth and Peterbilt medium duty vehicles,” said Chakib Toubal-Seghir

Thérèse is a "Doctor of synthesis," leading the Church to an understanding of the essentials of the Gospel
The Holy Father released this October 15, the memorial of St. Teresa of Avila, his apostolic exhortation on St. Thérèse of Lisieux, calling it, in French, C'est La Confiance ..
It is subtitled: "On confidence in the merciful love of God for the 150th anniversary of the birth of St
Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face."
And the first line quotes the little saint: “C’est la confiance et rien que la confiance qui doit nous conduire à l’Amour.” (It is confidence and nothing but confidence that must lead us to Love.)
"Its publication on the liturgical Memorial of Saint Teresa of Avila is a way of presenting Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face as the mature fruit of the reform of the Carmel and of the spirituality of the great Spanish saint," he said
The Holy Father reflects on her tremendous missionary spirit
The specific contribution that Therese offers us as a saint and a Doctor of the Church is not analytical
for her genius consists in leading us to what is central
By her words and her personal experience she shows that
while it is true that all the Church’s teachings and rules have their importance
some are more urgent and more foundational for the Christian life
That is where Therese directed her eyes and her heart
Quoting his 2013 exhortation, Evangelii Guadium
Thérèse has the message needed for these post-Christian times in which all of the Church is missionary
This Exhortation on Saint Therese allows me to observe that
“the message has to concentrate on the essentials
most appealing and at the same time most necessary
and thus becomes all the more forceful and convincing." The luminous core of that message is “the beauty of the saving love of God made manifest in Jesus Christ who died and rose from the dead."
Pope Francis lamented that sometimes this essential aspect of St
and "the only quotes we find cited from this saint are secondary to her message
or deal with things she has in common with any other saint
and any number of other beautiful testimonies."
He urged to find "what is most specific about her gift to the Church."
the timely witness of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face endures in all the grandeur of her little way.
In an age that urges us to focus on our ourselves and our own interests
Therese shows us the beauty of making our lives a gift
At a time when the most superficial needs and desires are glorified
she testifies to the radicalism of the Gospel
In an age of individualism, she makes us discover the value of a love that becomes intercession for others
At a time when human beings are obsessed with grandeur and new forms of power
In an age that casts aside so many of our brothers and sisters
she teaches us the beauty of concern and responsibility for one another
she can help us rediscover the importance of simplicity
and thus move beyond a legalistic or moralistic mindset that would fill the Christian life with rules and regulations
and cause the joy of the Gospel to grow cold
In an age of indifference and self-absorption
Therese inspires us to be missionary disciples
captivated by the attractiveness of Jesus and the Gospel
Dear Saint Therese, the Church needs to radiate the brightness, the fragrance and the joy of the Gospel. Send us your roses! Help us to be
like yourself, ever confident in God’s immense love for us, so that we may imitate each dayyour “little way” of holiness. Amen

We never do get enough Chloë Sevigny in our everyday lives, but it looks like our prayers have literally been answered. Over the weekend, the actress shared a new collaboration with L.A.-based perfume company Régime des Fleurs and Johnny Jewel from the Chromatics
Founders Alia Raza and Ezra Woods wrote the ethereal poem
We haven't exactly been skipping for joy because we were recently hit with more snow and lower temperatures on the east coast
but this jingle makes us really look forward to the spring
(How could you not warm up inside as Sevigny evocatively speaks of the gardens of paradise?) The track is more likely to put you in a trance

Forthcoming versions by various artists are expected for release throughout the month of February

Thérèse’s beatification in 1923Shutterstock
the remarkable story of a French Carmelite nun
and it wasn't long before people began to seek her intercession
Her canonization process was already opened in 1914 and reports of miracles began to flood in to the Vatican offices
two miracles were verified that paved the way to her beatification in 1923
in the year she would have turned 50 years old
According to the Society of the Little Flower
"in 1923 the Church approved of two spontaneous cures unexplained by medical treatment
Germain was cured of the stomach ulcers she had between 1913 and 1916
a 23-year-old seminarian who was dying from advanced pulmonary tuberculosis
'The destroyed and ravaged lungs had been replaced by new lungs
carrying out their normal functions and about to revive the entire organism
which will disappear within a few days under a regularly assimilated diet.'”
Pius XI subsequently beatified Thérèse of Lisieux on April 29
It only took two years to verify two more miracles that led to her canonization on May 17
I just finished reading Pope Francis’s new exhortation, C’est la confiance
which was released earlier today and focuses on the life and message of St
I found it so rich and inspiring that I think as soon as I publish this post
this document is on the same level as Amoris Laetitia and Evangelii Gaudium (although at around 7,400 words
it’s closer in length to Francis’s previous apostolic exhortation
Therese’s birthday (January 2) or feast day (October 1)
the reformer of the Carmelite Order and the foundress of the Discalced Carmelites
“I have not chosen to issue this Exhortation on either of those dates
so that this message may transcend those celebrations and be taken up as part of the spiritual treasury of the Church
Its publication on the liturgical Memorial of Saint Teresa of Avila is a way of presenting Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face as the mature fruit of the reform of the Carmel and of the spirituality of the great Spanish saint” (no
Pope Francis makes more explicit the missionary zeal and spiritual motives of St
clearly intending to provide the Church with a much richer understanding of the gifts that she brings to the Church that often go unnoticed
the only quotes we find cited from this saint are secondary to her message
and any number of other beautiful testimonies
we could be depriving ourselves of what is most specific about her gift to the Church” (no
the pope’s critics might take this passage to mean that this exhortation is an attempt to drain from St
Therese’s legacy its spiritual and supernatural significance
because at the center of C’est la confiance is St
Therese’s zeal for the salvation of souls
Therese could define her mission in these words: “I shall desire in heaven the same thing as I do now on earth: to love Jesus and to make him loved”
She wrote that she entered Carmel “to save souls”
she did not view her consecration to God apart from the pursuit of the good of her brothers and sisters
She shared the merciful love of the Father for his sinful son and the love of the Good Shepherd for the sheep who were lost
Pope Francis points out that the confidence exemplified by St
Therese is not confidence in ourselves or in ideas or movements
but confidence in God’s love and mercy
Her confidence might be described as anti-Pelagian — it is not to be placed in ourselves or others
Our complete confidence must be given to God alone
wished to highlight the primacy of God’s action; she encourages us to have complete confidence as we contemplate the love of Christ poured out to the end
At the heart of her teaching is the realization that
since we are incapable of being certain about ourselves
it is not possible to trust in our own efforts or achievements.”
One passage in the exhortation struck me as a subtle rebuke to some of the vitriol and attacks on the hierarchy during the church closings in response to the Covid-19 pandemic — a sense of entitlement insisting upon a “right” to receive the Eucharist
even if it meant putting the lives and health of others at risk
Francis writes that the “insistence of Therese on God’s initiative leads her
to put first not her desire to receive Jesus in Holy Communion
but rather the desire of Jesus to unite himself to us and to dwell in our hearts
saddened by her inability to receive communion each day
she tells Jesus: ‘Remain in me as in a tabernacle’
Her gaze remained fixed not on herself and her own needs
Therese exhibits a palpable level of detachment and a total confidence in God’s will
Her confidence in God’s love transforms what many would see as a loss into a gift
Certainly her outlook — captured in her famous phrase
“Everything is grace” — is example for all of us to embrace
But there are tangible fruits that we can recognize from the life of St
She was committed to the salvation of souls
Therese took up a number of what might be called “personal projects” — persons who were far from the faith but with whom she nevertheless felt a spiritual closeness
She offered her prayers and sacrifices for these individuals with complete confidence in God’s love for them and desire for their salvation
the answers to her prayers are unknown on this side of heaven
Hyacinthe Loyson a former Carmelite provincial and a famous preacher at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
Therese offered her final holy communion — her viaticum — for his conversion
Pope Francis points to one situation where St
Therese’s confidence in God’s love seems to have had a dramatic result:
Therese had felt a remarkable spiritual closeness to one of the most unfortunate of men
sentenced to death for a triple murder for which he was unrepentant
By having Masses offered for him and praying with complete confidence for his salvation
she was convinced that she was drawing him ever closer to the blood of Jesus
and she told God that she was sure that at the last moment he would pardon him “even if he went to his death without any signs of repentance”
she stated: “I was absolutely confident in the mercy of Jesus”
How great was her emotion when she learned that Pranzini
took hold of the crucifix the priest was holding out to him and kissed the sacred wounds three times!” This intense experience of hoping against all hope proved fundamental for her: “After this unique grace
Towards the end of this exhortation, I was beginning to think that the message of St. Therese had begun to remind me of Pope Francis’s first exhortation and call to evangelization, Evangelii Gaudium. As if on cue, I then read this passage from Pope Francis: “In Evangelii Gaudium
I urged a return to the freshness of the source
in order to emphasize what is essential and indispensable
I now consider it fitting to take up that invitation and propose it anew” (no
this new exhortation is an expansion of the missionary call that Pope Francis has been making since the first day of his papacy
There are many more elements in this short (but rich) exhortation, but we can discuss those on another day. And here’s the link to the exhortation
a Carmelite priest friend sent me these two videos
The first is a response to the exhortation by one of the brothers in his community
and the second is a video in which he discusses the significance of St

Thérèse to boost your Easter weekOffice central de Lisieux
we also get to marvel at the life emerging all around us
It also gives Christians the opportunity to embrace their faith and consider the eternal life that awaits us
The various writings of St. Thérèse de Lisieux, the French Carmelite nun who appreciated all the smallest of life's offerings
her wise words seem just as relevant -- and needed -- today as they did when they were written over 125 years ago
So take inspiration from her deep faith to inspire you this Easter and for the months and years to come:
The world's thy ship and not thy home."
A word or a smile is often enough to put fresh life in a despondent soul."
"Holiness consists simply in doing God's will
"It's true I suffer a great deal -- but do I suffer well
nature would lose her springtime beauty."
Therese’s “difficult sister” continues on the road to canonizationPublic Domain reference: WikiPedia
Following Therese’s “little way” was not “all roses” for LeonieOn Saturday
celebrated a Mass to commemorate the transfer of Servant of God Léonie Martin’s body from the crypt of the Visitation monastery to a new side-chapel in the church
part of the canonization process for Léonie
will better facilitate pilgrims who come to the monastery to pray for her intercession
In an interview with Ouest-France
expressed his belief that the initial investigation into her life will conclude in the next few months
“We expect that the historical commission will finish its work and that the two theologians chosen by the diocese will make their report… This report will then be sent to the Vatican and Léonie Martin will be declared ‘venerable.'”
Before Saint Thérèse of Lisieux wrote her Story of a Soul autobiography that has captivated millions around the world
Thérèse had a “first disciple” of her famous “little way”: her own sister
following Thérèse’s “little way” was not “all roses” for Léonie
From the very beginning of her life Léonie had to overcome numerous obstacles and was seen as a “troubled child” even by her mother
and while her other sisters were healthy and beautiful
At an early age she had a severe case of eczema that covered her whole body
which did not clear up until after her second birthday
As she grew, Léonie’s health improved but her constant tantrums and poor intellectual capability worried her mother. Zelie wrote about her, saying
“The poor child worries me; she has a very undisciplined nature
and mentally she is underdeveloped.” Some believe that Léonie may have had a form of autism
She was expelled from school on multiple occasions for being unruly and disruptive
It took Zelie’s sister (who was a Visitation sister) great effort to discover how to teach the young child
the poor child has plenty of faults… [At first,] I scolded her whenever she didn’t do well… I was making her unhappy… I wanted to be God’s Providence to her so I stopped scolding her and started to be very gentle with her
telling her that I saw she wanted to be good … and that I had faith in her
This had a magical effect – not just temporary
this did not last and she continued to struggle in school and her continued outbursts forced Zelie to return her home
Léonie’s struggles continued when it was discovered that a maidservant had been verbally and physically abusing her
The maid was dismissed and Léonie started to improve once again

Léonie was sent to another boarding school and improved in her studies
Then her sisters began to enter religious life and Léonie too had a desire to devote her life to God
This too would have its many obstacles and Léonie entered multiple communities before finding her place at the Visitation monastery at Caen
Throughout all of her struggles with religious life and the ailing health of their father
teaching her the “little way.” Léonie admired her sister so much that she took her sister’s name when she finally took vows

While she is not as well known as her sister
Léonie’s story is inspiring and her perseverance throughout so many struggles is an example for all of us
After Leonie has been declared “venerable,” the diocese plans to submit three unexplained healings to the Vatican for further review in hopes that they will become the miracles that propel Léonie to her beatification and canonization
