the Régates de Valleyfield will be pulling out all the stops both on stage
the event combining thrills and culture will be held in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield's Delpha-Sauvé Park on July 4
At a dinner attended by the partners of this major event at the Toro restaurant in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield

MNA Claude DeBellefeuille was quick to describe the event as a tradition for Campivallensians
it's a matter of course to take their annual vacation during the Valleyfield Regatta so they can attend together
and I notice this when I meet people for the first time and talk about Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
They immediately associate the place with the Régates
which couldn't take place without the contribution of dedicated volunteers."
A beautiful evolution over the decades
Let's not forget that the first Régates de Valleyfield saw the light of day in 1938 on municipal territory

We've gone back to the 50th anniversary logo
but incorporated the Robert-Théorêt circuit to bring it up to date a bit".
In keeping with the idea of paying tribute to the Régates’ pioneers
an exhibition of photos and memorabilia will be held at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Yacht Club from June 28 to July 13 for interested enthusiasts

"Our government is a major financial supporter of the Régates de Valleyfield
because it is one of the major sporting and cultural events held in Quebec
not to mention the economic spin-offs for the community
demonstrating the strength of the organization that has been working hard to make these competitions a must-see event for hydroplane racing and show enthusiasts
I salute and congratulate the current organization
which is carrying on the tradition of the Régates de Valleyfield
and I'm very proud to be associated with it," said Claude Reid

It's this unique combination of motorboat sport and entertainment that has made our event so famous for 85 years now," says Didier-Bernard Séguin
Chairman of the Régates de Valleyfield Board of Directors
fans who can't be there will be able to watch the races via live stream
over 50,000 people did so for all the races presented at the six competition venues.

the Régie intermunicipale de valorisation organique (RIVMO) adopted a borrowing bylaw for close to $37 million for its proposed composting complex project in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
A $10-million grant from the Ministère de l’Environnement will cover part of the project
while the remainder of the associated costs will be assumed in proportion to the population of the two MRCs that make up the RIVMO: 75 per cent by Roussillon and 25 per cent by Beauharnois-Salaberry
At least $1.36 million from the loan will be used to acquire the land for the complex
which is located on the Rue Des Érables on the site of the former Salaberry-de-Valleyfield landfill
The land is situated very close to the city’s water treatment plant
which will facilitate the treatment of water produced as part of the process
Most of the expenses relate to the development of the site
including the installation of concrete slabs
and the acquisition of equipment such as wheel loaders
The complex will use two main techniques: aerated cells and windrows
It will be able to process up to 45,000 tonnes of organic matter each year for the 18 municipalities that make up the RIVMO
Roussillon and Beauharnois-Salaberry collected 87,000 tonnes of organic matter
which is well below the processing capacity of the future complex
This surplus capacity will enable to RIVMO to extend its services to neighbouring municipalities
The construction of the regional compost complex will also reduce the greenhouse gases generated by the disposal of organic matter
which is currently being shipped to the Lachute region
A call for tenders for the construction of the complex is expected to go out by the end of the year
Work is expected to start in the spring of 2025
while the commissioning of the new site is scheduled for late 2025
The RIVMO board of directors includes six mayors from the two MRCs
including chair Sylvain Payant of Saint-Isidore
and vice-chair Miguel Lemieux of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
The board had originally planned on using biomethanization technology to treat organic waste
with the goal of recovering the methane gas produced as a source of energy
the call for tenders for this project resulted in a lowest bid of $140 million

while the government has announced the construction of two new elementary schools within the service centre’s territory

The new 17-classroom elementary school will be built on the grounds of the École Frédéric-Girard school in the city’s La Baie sector
The school will feature three kindergarten classrooms
our school community will have the chance to explore and develop in an innovative educational environment and in stimulating spaces that reflect the trend of new-generation schools,” said Vranderick
“A magnificent future continues to unfold for our artisans
and our professional community,” she added
and the People’s Party of Canada have all named their candidates in the Beauharnois-Salaberry-Soulanges-Huntingdon (BSSH) and the Châteauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville ridings
The NDP nominated first-time candidate Tyler Jones to run in the BSSH riding on January 24
A passionate advocate for workers’ rights and environmental protection
the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield resident is campaigning during evenings and weekends while continuing his work as a courier
saying he wants to get a feel for every part of the riding
“My number one priority for my campaign is agriculture,” says Jones
noting he has spoken with many farm families about the current realities facing area producers
Climate change is also high on his list of priorities
as is lowering the cost of living and building affordable homes
While the trade war with the United States is a concern
he prefers to focus on the riding’s constituents and less on what Donald Trump has to say
Jones says he has a special affinity for the Chateauguay Valley
having lived briefly with his family in Ormstown
He and his wife are big supporters of the buy local movement
and can often be found at local restaurants
Hannah Wolker will run for the NDP for a second time in the Châteauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville riding
The party has only very recently confirmed her nomination
She is a grassroots organizer with deep roots in the riding
The Green Party has named Kristian Solarik as the candidate for the BSSH riding
He last ran for office in the 2022 provincial election as a candidate with the Green Party of Quebec
He currently serves on the executive committee and the shadow cabinet for the party at the provincial level as the transportation critic
He advocates for forward-thinking policies that prioritize environmental sustainability
Solarik has lived in the riding for 15 years with his partner and nine-year-old son
He works as a sales representative for a Quebec-based company that provides rolling stock and safety equipment to businesses throughout the Suroît region
He says his background in transportation and safety have afforded him a practical perspective and solution driven approach to the challenges facing his community
Solarik maintains his campaign is “rooted in the belief that bold
green leadership can drive meaningful progress for families
Martine Desrochers has been confirmed as the Green Party of Canada’s candidate in the Châteauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville riding
The People’s Party of Canada has nominated Martin Lévesque in the BSSH riding
He says he is driven by a deep commitment to defending his community and the fundamental values of freedom
Lévesque says he believes that “Canada can regain its prosperity and give power back to the people
if we have the courage of our convictions.”
Nicolas Guérin will run in the neighbouring Châteauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville riding for the PPC
he says he champions reforms rooted in freedom
“Citizens need to take charge of their country to stop the plundering of our wealth and secure our children’s future,” he says
while arguing that all citizens must unite against globalism
Guérin served three years in the Canadian Armed Forces
he also runs a farm where he produces pasture-raised eggs with his family
Guerin says he prioritizes policies that would “pause immigration
and prioritize jobs and housing for Canadians.” He also believes the Canadian Multiculturalism Act should be repealed
and inclusion as well as gender-based ideology
He believes Canada should work with Donald Trump to “free the economy,” and aims to protect national sovereignty by leaving the United Nations and strengthening national security
The Hôpital du Suroît in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield is coping with severe labour shortages
brought on by government legislation clamping down on the use of private health agencies
the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Montérégie-Ouest (CISSSMO) confirmed there is a possibility that an additional 30 beds will be closed before the end of the month
According to a communications representative for the regional health authority
the closures represent less than five per cent of the total number of available beds across the CISSSMO and are a temporary measure
“We are currently working to reorganize services and recruit new staff to replace the independent workforce and reopen beds,” said the CISSSMO representative in an email
“We are also closely monitoring the situation at our other two hospitals,” she confirmed
the Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown and the Anna Laberge Hospital in Chateauguay remain unaffected by reductions in the use of placement agencies
“We are continuing our efforts in this direction,” she explained
while noting that intensive recruitment campaigns are also underway to attract new workers for the future Vaudreuil-Soulanges hospital
the CISSSMO has confirmed that ambulance routes have been redistributed such that patients from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield will now be taken to the Anna Laberge Hospital
This follows a previous directive issued in May that temporarily required non-priority calls involving residents of Hemmingford
and Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois be redirected to the Barrie Memorial Hospital
“The redrawing of ambulance services within the territory will enable the population to maintain access to safe
quality health care services in neighbouring establishments.”
Users requiring immediate care will continue to be transported to their local facility

A 16-unit apartment building was destroyed by flames on Friday
The fire occurred at 322 rue Jeanne-Mance and required the intervention of some sixty firefighters from the region
including crews from Vaudreuil-Soulanges.
Salaberry-de-Valleyfield fire chief Christian Poulin confirms that the probable cause of the blaze was a cigarette butt thrown into a flowerpot.
The call reporting the presence of flames and smoke was forwarded to 911 at around 5:45 pm
“Our response ended at around 2.30am on Saturday morning
and the fire was brought under control by around 11pm
Teams from neighbouring brigades - Beauharnois
Saint-Zotique and Coteau-du-Lac - came to lend a hand
We were also able to count on the support of the UCMU to provide food and drink to the sappers taking part in this intervention
no injuries were reported,” he sums up.
The only difficulty encountered by the firefighters on the scene
who were led by Chief Joël Vinet-Lebel
was positioning the fire engines on rue Jeanne-Mance
which is a cul-de-sac in the area where the incident took place.
Extensive damage was caused to the building's roof and 4th floor
suggesting that tenants will have to relocate for several months due to the upcoming renovation work.
2nd and 3rd floors were particularly badly damaged by water and smoke
it will be many months before the remaining tenants can return to their homes
An election call in Canada is expected to be announced in the coming days
once Mark Carney is sworn in as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and as prime minister
The election will usher in many changes for the country
candidates in the current Salaberry-Suroît riding will find themselves running to represent the constituents of Beauharnois-Salaberry-Soulanges-Huntingdon (BSSH)
The Chateauguay-Lacolle riding will also change names
becoming Chateauguay-Les-Jardins-de-Napierville
which were announced following the 2022 redistribution of federal electoral districts
will see the Haut-Saint-Laurent split in two – where the Town of Huntingdon
and the township municipalities of Dundee and Godmanchester
The Chateauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville riding will include all the municipalities in the MRC des Jardins-de-Napierville
including Hemmingford Village and Hemmingford Township
and the parish municipality of Très-Saint-Sacrement
Salaberry-Suroît MP and Bloc Québécois candidate Claude DeBellefeuille has already announced she will seek a fifth term in the next election
She says that while it is not ideal for an MRC to be divided between two federal ridings
the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent was one of only a handful of MRCs that had not been split in some way prior to this election
“When there is a redistribution every ten years
and the demographic growth is happening outside of the Haut-Saint-Laurent
at a certain point the electoral commission has to create a boundary somewhere,” she explains
DeBellefeuille says she would not be surprised
given the demographic growth predicted in Vaudreuil
if the Haut-Saint-Laurent were to be reunited in ten years following the next redistribution process
but towards the Chateauguay-Les-Jardins-de-Napierville riding
The new BSSH riding will be the second most populous in Quebec after the new Vaudreuil riding
DeBellefeuille says she is more concerned about the upcoming election than the change in boundaries
“A quick election call is in everyone’s interest,” she insists
suggesting the government is not being taken seriously by the United States because parliament is not sitting
it is absolutely essential that the election be called quickly so a legitimate and democratically elected government is in place,” DeBellefeuille says
She says the next few weeks will be very interesting
the newly acclaimed candidate in the BSSH riding for the federal New Democratic Party
“Everything is up in the air right now,” says the first-time candidate
who is growing his team of volunteers while introducing himself to the many communities in the riding
and says he is disappointed that the Haut-Saint-Laurent was separated between the two ridings
He says he would work to ensure common ground is found between the two ridings and that the area is properly represented as a whole
He says he is also concerned about the upcoming election with so little time to prepare
“It is just a question of connecting with voters
and getting out and hearing their concerns and frustrations,” he adds
while acknowledging there is a lot of territory to cover and a lot of different issues at hand
The official candidates for the federal Liberal and Conservative parties in the BSSH riding were not named as of press time
Kristian Solarik will run once again for the Green Party of Canada
while Martin Lévesque will run for the People’s Party of Canada
None of the main federal parties have announced the names of their candidates in the Chateauguay-Jardins-de-Napierville riding
A months-long investigation culminated in a significant drug bust in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield last week
as Quebec provincial police (SQ) executed search warrants that led to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of drugs and weapons
which involved approximately twenty SQ officers including tactical units and a K-9 team
resulted in the arrest of a 46-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman
Both suspects remained in custody and appeared the following day at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield courthouse to face charges related to drug trafficking and possession of weapons
officers seized more than 120 grams of cocaine
The SQ also confiscated more than $4,000 in Canadian currency
along with drug trafficking paraphernalia including scales and multiple cell phones
The operation falls under Quebec's CENTAURE strategy
a provincial initiative designed to maintain constant pressure on organized crime while actively combating armed violence throughout the province
The strategy coordinates efforts between partner police forces at national
targeting the supply chain of illegal firearms from importation to possession
is part of a broader effort to combat drug trafficking in the region
The SQ continues to encourage public cooperation in their fight against drug trafficking and reminds the public that they can report any information confidentially to the Criminal Information Center at 1-800-659-4264

There is talk of removing the fence around the marina site at the request of the City of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield to open the site to the public
with the exception of certain spaces such as the docks
citizens and visitors will be able to walk there
it once again becomes the exclusive property of the City of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
and these would be with the avowed aim of being conducive to walks
The operations and management of the site will also be reviewed as part of future agreements
particularly concerning the winter storage of boats where cohabitation with the citizens of the sector will be prioritized
the management of the docks at the Delpha-Sauvé Park and the eventual holding of a sailing school
the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield marina is one of the three largest marinas in Quebec
Ranked four gold anchors by the Association maritime du Québec
the marina offers the particular advantage of being accessible on foot from the nautical center of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
which must serve the City and its development

The Bureau de recrutement international (BRI) of the Integrated Health and Social Services of Montérégie-Ouest (CISSSMO) no longer only has a name and a mission
a clinical nurse from France works in the emergency room of the Hôpital du Suroît
Originally from Brittany but having taken up residence in France for a few years
the 27-year-old woman completed her nursing training in 2016
She practiced her profession for more than two years in infectious diseases and for 6 months in pediatric intensive care
She finally let herself be tempted by the call of adventure and landed at the Montreal-Trudeau airport on January 10th following a series of interviews with the CISSSMO
The initial contact was in 2020 but COVID-19 postponed the plans
The one who works a night shift at the Hôpital du Suroît claims to have received significant support which ultimately ended up making her cross the Atlantic
“The CISSSMO took good care of me,” she says
This woman even took her time to view apartments for me so that I could have a suitable place to stay
it was the spouse of a colleague who came with me
I received several welcome emails when I arrived
Ludivine Collet admits having strong emotions for Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
quiet town,” says the clinical nurse
I don’t even have to use my car to go to work
I love it here so much that I’m already thinking about applying for permanent residency
I am on a work permit which gives me the right to work for 3 years.”
Collet does not hide it; practicing your profession in Quebec is very different from doing it in France
someone who wants to study nursing must pass three tests and an oral in which the person must discuss their motivations
there are no auxiliary nurses or service aids
The stethoscope is also reserved for doctors
but since there is no respiratory therapist
it is the nurses who perform respiratory assessments
when I arrived at the Hôpital du Suroît
I did a 75-day internship so that my diploma would be recognized
I can confirm that the salary of a nurse in Quebec is double that of France

It will eliminate the consumption of approximately 21,000,000 m3 of natural gas and 1,500 litres of heavy fuel oil
which is the equivalent to an annual reduction of nearly 40,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in Quebec or taking more than 11,000 cars off the road for a year[1]
“Today’s announcement marks an important milestone for our North American operations and our global carbon footprint
As part of our Spirit of Progress plan we are committed to reaching zero net carbon emissions by 2030 and we are very grateful for this partnership with the Quebec government
which allows us to make significant progress in creating a more sustainable world.” Ewan Andrew

it will be able to position its Quebec products as “green” spirits
This is a great way to promote Quebec’s green energy
It’s also a way to ensure the distillery’s long-term prosperity in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield

Our Valleyfield distillery generates 290 direct jobs in Quebec and purchases grain from 1,500 Quebec farmers
and bottles several of the company’s products and brands
such as the iconic Canadian whisky Crown Royal
The Valleyfield plant will be our first distillery in North America to make the transition to carbon neutrality via implementing four energy efficiency measures and two measures to convert from natural gas and fuel oil to electricity
such as a mechanical vapour recompression evaporator
“The Government of Canada continues to drive ambitious climate policy supported by concrete actions already under way to go further and faster in the fight against climate change
It is important to support innovative projects that reduce emissions
create good jobs and allow Canada to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050
Today’s announcement highlights some of the significant work being done by Quebec and its partners to build a stronger economy and a healthier province
Leadership in strategic projects such as Diageo announced today will reduce emissions and ensure that workers and communities have a cleaner and healthier environment.” Steven Guilbeault
Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada
We will also significantly reduce our electricity consumption during peak periods to avoid putting pressure on the network and thus contribute to the sound management of Quebec’s energy resources. During these periods
we will use alternative green energy sources to maintain its production
“The energy transition will be achieved largely through more efficient use of existing resources
We are very proud to participate in the electric conversion of the Diageo facilities
and to contribute to the implementation of energy efficiency measures
This project is a concrete example of changes we need to keep making in the future — using our clean energy to electrify as many economic activities as possible.” Sophie Brochu

her indescribable support during the election campaigns and that the latter is in her last moments of life
The district of La Baie is one of two districts in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield whose incumbent candidate announced his retirement from politics
it was obvious that a fight was to be expected in this district
voters in the area brought Sophie Sirois-Perras to power
The latter won the confidence of 63.8% of voters by defeating François Labossière at the same time

Canada Tire Inc inaugurated its gigantic warehouse in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield on Thursday
Gabriel Granatstein with the Mayor of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
A 112,750 square foot warehouse with a 32 foot ceiling
this is where the management of the company founded in 1928 chose to relocate its distribution center previously located in the West Island of Montreal
It is therefore in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
boulevard Gérard-Cadieux that the management of Canada Tire has taken up residence
Miguel Lemieux underlined the power of attraction of the regional capital of Suroît
“Our industrial park has the wind in its sails and the same is true for the City of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
You just have to walk along Boulevard Gérard-Cadieux to see that there are also two other constructions in progress
continues to develop relentlessly and now has several thousand employees
Businesses there have access in less than 30 minutes to the South Shore of Montreal
This industrial zone is characterized by the presence of the Port of Valleyfield
its direct access to Highway 30 via the 530
These features make this site a remarkable and attractive place of development for entrepreneurs and investors from here and elsewhere”
Impossible to know the nature of the investment of the company which hires approximately 25 workers
it is possible to see that it amounts to a few million
“We are a private company so these are confidential details
I can confirm that the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield warehouse is double the size of the old distribution center in Montreal and that all the equipment is new
it is the largest warehouse of our seven distribution centers”
while the warehouse space has been doubled
“We realized with the pandemic that working remotely is possible
Canada Tire is a family business which is currently run by the third and fourth generation sons
They share the same passion for the tire industry and are dedicated to their employees
Although Canada Tire started out as a tire retailing company
it has grown into a tire distributor for retailers
ALI Excavation Group plans to invest no less than $25 million in its operational site in the Valleyfield Industrial Park
The construction of a brand-new head office is the starting point; a complex that will set a precedent in the business world of Quebec
with the integration of sports and artistic facilities that will make this head office unique and exclusive in the industrial milieu
According to President and CEO Marc-André Loiselle
this major investment will profoundly change the local and regional economic ecosystem
as the new head office will feature rooftop sports facilities such as a Dek field hockey surface
with bleachers and a variety of beautiful terrace areas: architectural elements all laid out on a green roof
in keeping with the precepts of sustainable development
The concept also includes an indoor gymnasium and tennis court on the company site
aesthetically uncluttered head office is aiming for LEED certification: a first in the city of Valleyfield for an essentially privately-owned construction
the project is part of an overall concept that emphasizes interior and urban design
What's new about this new complex is that it will also feature a stage with lighting grids and technical equipment
enabling a variety of shows and performing arts performances to be staged before an audience of up to 300
it will also be possible to host first-rate corporate events for the benefit of the community
The new building will go up in September 2023
and will have a footprint of over 53,000 sq
of warehouse space to manage the optimal use of over 400 units of the family company's equipment park
The new administrative offices will be built in front of the building over 3 floors
will be used primarily for recreational purposes
changing rooms and a lounge area with a range of equipment and accessories to enable employees to enjoy themselves directly on site
The administrative area will be heated and cooled entirely by geothermal heat pumps fed by ground-source energy collector wells
The project was designed to comply with Quebec's new Energy Code
and far exceeds the standards of the industry of the future
this bold project is a clear demonstration not only of the company's commitment to the Valleyfield and regional business and civic communities
but also of its unwavering determination to offer exceptional working conditions to its several hundred employees
whatever their specialization," said Marc-André Loiselle
He added that the presence of multiple sports facilities will enable employees to enjoy a more than pleasant and productive working life
which in turn will promote their health and well-being
or even in Canada among civil engineering and construction companies
is likely to generate a power of attraction and a talent retention force
which is not to be neglected in a context of labour scarcity
This construction and development project will harmonize with the company's overall industrial site
Loiselle also praised the involvement of his financial partners: Investissement Québec (IQ)
Loiselle concluded by saying that this major project will ultimately contribute to the continuous improvement of the company's environmental management system
while at the same time boosting the company's environmental performance and the performance capacity of its facilities

Last Thursday saw the launch of a joint exhibition by Cité-des-Jeunes art students and Cégep de Valleyfield visual arts graduates
at the Armand-Frappier library in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
The theme of dreams was chosen by all exhibitors
Students from Cité-des-Jeunes focused on self-portraits with an explanatory vignette
while those from Cégep de Valleyfield tried their hand at silkscreening
Each silkscreen was accompanied by an explanatory text on the dream
the Vaudreuil-Dorion students each created a mini sculpture
14 students from Valleyfield and 23 from Cité-des-Jeunes are exhibiting their work until June 13.

Opposition is mounting against proposed changes to the boundary of the Huntingdon riding
following a report published by the Commission de la représentation électorale du Québec that recommends adding five municipalities to the constituency
The commission is proposing to offset population growth in neighbouring ridings by adding the municipalities of Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois
and a section of the city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to the Huntingdon riding
Public consultations on the proposed changes ran from mid-October to November 15
A total of seven briefs were presented during an in-person session on November 7 in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
and Vaudreuil MNA Marie-Claude Nichols presented their perspectives
the prefects for the MRC de Beauharnois-Salaberry and MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges
None spoke positively of the commission’s recommendations
Huntingdon MNA Carole Mallette was especially critical
arguing the changes would see the riding expand even further without any additional resources to meet new needs
The CDC du Haut-Saint-Laurent also denounced the proposed changes in a memoir submitted to the commission
suggesting the addition of more populous municipalities could disproportionally impact the MNA’s available time to address issues facing smaller communities
A resolution adopted by the municipality of Havelock on November 6 requests the status quo be maintained for the riding
A parliamentary commission will review the recommendations and a revised proposal will be debated in the National Assembly before any new electoral boundaries will be adopted
The revised electoral map will be in place for the 2026 provincial election
July 1st is also the date chosen for the implementation of the new trucking restriction on route 201 in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
The Minister of Transport confirms that the measure prohibits trucks with 5 axles and more from driving on Mgr-Langlois blvd between route 132 (Hébert blvd)
in Coteau-du-Lac every day from 7 a.m
There is only one exception and it will be for local deliveries
trucks travelling on route 201 must continue to travel in the right lane
The new measure aims to optimize the flow of traffic on route 201
The Minister thanks the trucking industry for its understanding and cooperation in enforcing this restriction
The average daily percentage of semi-trailer type trucks in transit is 60%
according to a study carried out by the Ministry in 2015
heavy goods vehicles traffic flow in this sector has increased by 52.7%
a left lane trucking restriction has been in effect
Route 201 is a national highway in southwestern Quebec that crosses the city of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in particular
it is a two-lane road in each direction with about ten intersections

which spans Lake Saint-François between Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield is scheduled to be closed temporarily from January 10 to March 17
Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC)
the bridge closure is essential to complete necessary maintenance that is required once every 40 years to ensure the continued reliability and safety of the bridge
The planned work is part of an infrastructure maintenance program implemented by the management corporation
Information released by the management corporation notes that after 38 years in service
the counterweight cables installed on the bridge have reached the end of their useful life
The cables are essential for the proper operation of the lift bridge
massive cranes will be installed on the bridge throughout the construction work
The SLSMC has confirmed the Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague Bridge will be accessible throughout this period
and due to the closure of the shipping season
there will be no bridge lifts during this time
A road detour plan has also been developed in collaboration with the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable that considers existing alternative routes that cross the seaway
Road signallers will be in place on weekdays to ensure traffic runs smoothly at critical intersections
The corporation is also working with emergency services
and organizations in the region to ensure emergency plans are in place
access to the parking lot at Parc des Bâtisseurs in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield will be restricted between December 18 to March 22
to store equipment and materials required for the maintenance work

with engines revving and the start of racing scheduled for 10 a.m

A powerful storm tore through lakeside communities on Thursday afternoon as high winds snapped trees
and left thousands without electricity in Dundee
the region was struck by a low pressure system that produced severe thunderstorms and torrential downpours
A tornado watch issued earlier in the day was upgraded to a warning by mid-afternoon
Alerts warning of a “potentially life-threatening situation” began to sound over smartphones and radio broadcasts shortly after 3 p.m
as swirling dark clouds quickly rolled in and the area was pelted by high winds and blinding sheets of rain
The federal agency estimates between 50 to 100 millimetres of rain fell in the Montreal area
and gusts of wind up to 98 km/h were registered in Dorval
A second tornado warning was issued just after 5 p.m.
marine tornados “are often wrapped in rain and may not be visible.”
A tornado that touched down earlier in the day damaged houses and buildings in Barrhaven
a tornado was confirmed to have touched down in Mirabel
and Environment Canada now suspects a second tornado may have hit Valleyfield
which would have had the same properties as a tornado but did not touch land
Staff from the Northern Tornadoes Project are investigating the damage
and updates will be provided by Environment Canada as new information becomes available
All tornado and thunderstorm warnings were lifted around 8 p.m
as the skies cleared and people began to assess the damage and clean up after the storms
The Régates de Valleyfield site at Parc Delpha-Sauvé suffered serious damage as one of the main tents was leveled
organizers announced the cancellation of the supper and concert set to kick off the weekend-long regatta out of concern for the community’s safety and well-being
The start time for races to begin on Friday was delayed to at least noon to allow organizers time to clean and secure the site
the weather resulted in the cancellation of the Parc en Fête activity
Hydro Quebec was reporting 7337 customers without power in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
at least 397 addresses were without electricity in Dundee
1141 in Saint-Anicet due to 14 interruptions that are also affecting parts of Godmanchester and Elgin
The interruptions are considered part of a major ongoing outage caused by the strong winds
Howick and Très-Saint-Sacrement are also without electricity

tributes are pouring in for the former pitcher of the Montreal Expos organization
The ball field located in the Saint-Timothée sector will be named after the former Montreal Expos pitcher
Denis McSween from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
A few months after receiving the Medal from the National Assembly of Québec
the 70-year-old from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield will see his name forever associated with the baseball field in the area where he grew up with his family
The Southwest Voice has learned that Parc Charpentier
located in the former municipality of Saint-Timothée Village (before the merger)

but one that does not take anyone by surprise
I would be surprised if there is any big events before 2022
it’s not easy for anyone.” The economic benefits associated with the Valleyfield Regatta are significant
do not think that the survival of businesses in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield depends on the event
“Since the tourists will not be present
these are potential customers who are not there
let’s suppose that a business has $ 5,000 in turnover on the weekend
Last year we did have a sidewalk sale on the weekend that the event was scheduled to take place
that did not make up for the shortfall.”
Mrs. Carrier specifies that it is the new businesses that are most affected by the cancellation
the president of the CCIBSHSL assures that there are already ideas on the table and that discussions will take place soon
We have a meeting in the next few days so we can already address the subject.”

“We are working to find our alumni,” says Anick Leclerc
the principal at Gault Institute in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
She is hopeful there may be interest among former grads and the extended Gault community to give back
by volunteering to help develop a breakfast club at the school in partnership with the Breakfast Club of Canada
Leclerc says she is looking for ways to introduce more opportunities for students to meet with seniors or older individuals who share a connection with the school
they bring a sense of calm; they bring a rich vocabulary
“A breakfast club will allow students to take their time
noting that the volunteers will be contributing to a renewed sense of community – something she is hoping to spark within the school
Leclerc acknowledges that Gault Institute is unique in that students come to the school from all across the greater Beauharnois-Salaberry-de-Valleyfield region
She says she wants to help her students to see the school as a welcoming environment
and we don’t see each other over the weekend
look at how rich we are,” she says of her students and their diverse backgrounds
“I am a product of this school,” Leclerc adds
noting she taught at Gault for 15 years before moving on
she left Chateauguay Valley Regional High School to take over as principal from Brigitte Barrette
suggesting it is both uplifting and exciting to know she will finish her career where it began
Leclerc says she has been “feeling the pulse” of the building
and their families to learn what the community needs
Her observations will feed into a five-year plan
which will include an expansion to the school to ease overcrowding
Gault’s student population has swelled to over 300
and this rapid growth has coincided with a ranking of 10 on the New Approaches
New Solutions intervention strategy (NANS)
which measures the proportion of students from disadvantaged areas
This ranking translates into smaller group ratios and a need for more classrooms
“Our specialists are all on carts,” she says
We are really having to share space,” she explains
noting this is another reason she wants to focus on building a sense of community spirit within the school
“We are trying to be creative and see what we can do
because this community is important to the overall Valleyfield region,” she says
maybe we will find some solutions,” she adds
suggesting she has no doubt the school will overcome the growing pains in new and positive ways
