President Dean Thomas told Sarnia News Today plans were drawn up about four years ago to partner with the town on a project in Camlachie.
"The initial plans were in the $500,000 range to have some sort of outdoor pad that the kids could skate on," said Thomas. "Fast forward four years, and that pad has turned into something that's way more complex and way more complicated and obviously more costly. The last estimate of the cost was in the $2.2 million to $2.4 million range."
Thomas said they took the updated number back to their board to see what the impacts of the increase would do to the club in terms of fundraising to pay back the money.
Thomas said the club is still working with the town in hopes of doing something for the kids in the Camlachie area.
"We feel there is a need for something for the kids to benefit from," said Thomas. "We're working toward putting some ideas forward to the town, something in the same area at the Camlachie Community Centre property. Something that's going to be easily attainable by both sides to come up with the funds. As of right now, we certainly don't have anything inked out for a project. We're in the early stages of negotiating a path forward with the town."
Thomas said the Huron Shores Optimist Club wants to be integrated into the town's park master plan so they can work toward the same future goal.
He said they're hoping to meet in the next few months to figure out a concrete path forward.

Justice Mark Poland said he hopes it sends a message to other like-minded people
“By the time you dig yourself out of this sentence
the very best of your last days here on Earth will have passed you by and your life
your health and your vitality will very likely be much different than they are today
May that stand as a message to those who stand to lose so much in return for the financial gain associated with importing these toxic agents of despair into our country,” the judge said on Monday
an owner-operator truck driver pulling a trailer belonging to a Toronto-based freight company
was randomly flagged for an inspection when he arrived on the Canadian side of the twin-span bridge shortly after 3 p.m
Canada Border Services Agency officers found the bricks of cocaine inside suitcases at the back of the trailer between the load and a piece of cardboard used to secure it
The 100 bricks weighed 100 kilograms and were worth between $3.6 and $10 million
“This quantity represents a commercial-level involvement in the drug trade,” Poland said
His sentencing was adjourned multiple times but finally wrapped up Monday
“This is a grave offence and one that must be strongly condemned,” Poland said
Federal prosecutor Rick Visca previously said the sentencing range for drug smuggling cases is between nine and 12 years in prison
had asked for the lowest sentence possible
There was no direct evidence Shah had knowledge or control of the drugs
which the judge pointed out weren’t well hidden
but Visca argued at trial there was an overwhelming inference he had knowledge and control based on circumstantial evidence
One key piece of circumstantial evidence included the trailer latch lock
which was modified with standard nuts as opposed to special tamper-proof ones
and two wrenches that fit the nuts found in Shah’s cab
A detective recorded a video shown in court of how removing nuts on the trailer latch lock could allow access to the inside of the trailer while leaving the seal intact
The fleet’s operations manager testified they don’t use those types of nuts on their trailers
Investigators also found photos on Shah’s phone of modified trailer latch lock systems
A second important piece of evidence was the route Shah took after being loaded at WOW Logistics in Wisconsin Rapids
A GPS unit seized from his truck showed he left the interstate in the Chicago area and took an indirect route on secondary highways before stopping at Midwest Can Co
and Container Specialties in Franklin Park
When he left he returned to the interstate
but only drove about an hour before parking at a truck stop in Gary
Poland called the route highly suspect and the stop there markedly unusual
A third piece of evidence was Shah deleting some history on his cellphone
but argued the Crown didn’t prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt
“It is clear and apparent that the Crown has proved its case to the high standard of criminal law,” he said

A three-year e-bike ridesharing pilot program is expected to launch in Sarnia this summer
"We'd probably start with 25 e-bikes," he said
"We are prepared to create signage in all designated parking areas
educating riders of not just how to utilize the e-bike but to e-bike riding etiquette
which we believe is essential to creating a safe riding experience for all who share our roads
The list of pick-up/drop-off locations includes Howard-Watson Trail
"As long as the vehicle -- or the e-bike is returned to any one of those assigned parking locations
They're free really to go throughout the city," he said
Those who park an e-bike in a non-designated area could face a fee in order to return it to the approved location
Tukeli said the bike could be free-standing and parked either on a designated grassy area or in a vehicular parking space
as one parking space could fit five e-bikes
QR codes will be used to unlock the bikes through an app
Tukeli said with remote management they'll also be able to restrict areas near geofencing
we're talking about something that we call trip data
That could be something from identifying rider profile
"So this information can be shared with the city
We can figure out who's riding these things
Rental options would include one trip (30 minutes)
a three-day pass (six trips or three hours per day)
and a monthly pass (six trips or three hours per day)
The project is expected to launch in June or July as the manufacturer
requires about 30 days to deliver the first fleet of e-bikes
which is why the pilot was proposed for two to three years instead of the usual one year
"We really need that time to identify and potentially forecast increased vehicles or maybe other particular locations of interest," he said
Aside from the environmental and health benefits
Tukeli noted there's an opportunity for people to explore local attractions and visit businesses
if a parking location is placed near a coffee shop
he said riders may be encouraged to stop in
While the presentation received a positive response
a few councillors questioned whether it was fair to allocate parking spaces for the e-bikes without a fee
"I do think that in terms of our investment -- and that's what it is as a community -- by providing this space
I think the data and the learning and the potential revenue opportunity post the three-year pilot is significant enough that it warrants us to allow this to play out ..
as presented," said City/County Councillor Brian White
Tukeli's company is the best choice at that time during an RFP
then certainly he would have had the opportunity to prove himself
If it's at the stage where a second operator is beneficial to the city and we're able to generate revenue through both -- or however that plays out
then I think our investment will be well paid back in dividends."
Councillor Terry Burrell added an amendment for staff to report back to council as the pilot project progresses
In early April, council agreed to permanently allow the use of e-bikes on trails and pathways within the city after a one-year pilot project was conducted
Tukeli's presentation (with slides) can be viewed on the city's website.

Sarnia’s Jack Nesbitt of the Windsor Spitfires had a goal and an assist as Canada whipped Sweden 7-0 in Saturday’s IIHF under-18 world men’s championship gold-medal game at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.
Article contentSarnia Sting forward Alessandro Di Iorio also played for Canada, which has won consecutive gold medals at the U18 championship for the first time.
Brady Martin scored twice and netminder Jack Ivankovic stopped 28 shots in the final.
Xavier Villeneuve, Jackson Smith, Ethan Czata and Braeden Cootes also scored for Canada, which led 2-0 after the first period and 5-0 heading into the third.
Nesbitt finished with two goals and three assists in six games. He scored Friday in a 4-0 semifinal win over Slovakia.
Di Iorio had two goals and an assist in six games. Sting teammate Beckham Edwards was a spare for Canada.
Nesbitt previously won gold with Canada White at the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge. Di Iorio won silver with Canada Red at the 2024 U17 World Challenge in Sarnia.
Brampton Steelheads netminder Ivankovic went 144 minutes and 53 seconds without allowing a goal in Texas. He finished with back-to-back shutouts.
Sweden, coming off an emotional 4-3 semifinal win over the U.S. Friday, didn’t appear to have much left in the tank for the aggressive Canadians.
“What a great feeling,” said Canadian head coach Cory Stillman. “(It’s been a) long season for these guys and you always want to finish the season with a championship with your club team. If that doesn’t pan out, you get to represent your country and that’s pretty special.
“We got better as the tournament went on. Tonight, was the best game we played, and we came out winners.”
Jackson Smith, of the Western Hockey League’s Tri-City Americans, was thrilled to win the gold medal.
“This was one of the closest teams I’ve ever been on,” said Smith. “We came together quick, didn’t have a ton of time to get to know each other but that didn’t matter. It showed out there with how we played tonight, we are truly a team. This is an incredible feeling.
“There is nothing better than winning gold for Canada, and to do it twice (2024 Hlinka-Gretzky) is extra special. Hopefully, this is just the start for me and these guys.”
Ivankovic and Martin were named to the tournament all-star team. Ivankovic was also named best goaltender of the tournament.
The United States beat Slovakia 4-3 in overtime for bronze.

A local group has called for strategic voting for the Liberal candidate in Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentThere’s not much evidence strategic voting happens often
a PhD candidate in political science at London’s Western University
“All the research suggests people will vote for their preferred party,” he said
“They sort of have a hard time doing what it takes to strategically vote
where you vote for a party that you don’t really like.”
“Most people opt out of that,” Routley said
to find voters “making the calculations” and “saying
‘My party is not going to win so I’m going to go with the other party,’” he said
“They’re not doing that as often as is perceived.”
which takes in about 128,000 residents in Lambton County and Walpole Island
is a new riding created at the recommendation of a federal election districts redistribution commission
Conservative Marilyn Gladu has represented the previous Sarnia-Lambton riding since 2015 and she’s running in the new riding in her fourth federal election campaign
followed by the NDP at 21 per cent and the Liberals at 10 per cent
given that the NDP collapse has been so notable
that might shift things around,” Routley said
But the NDP leadership “hasn’t made any cues” in the direction of strategic voting
“I think they’re telling their people to support them even though they’re looking at 10 seats nationally.”
urging support for Liberal candidate George Vandenberg
it’s the NDP that’s going to beat the Conservatives
the NDP candidate in Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong
“they would really like to vote a certain way
but they feel like they need to save Canada from the Conservatives.”
They may be responding to what they see on strategic voting websites using national poll numbers that don’t consider recent local election results
the NDP has been a strong second behind the Conservatives and we’ve been closing that gap,” Chan said
In the area of eastern Lambton added to Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong
“We have been gaining in numbers,” she said
Chan said she believes voters should also look at which parties are “actually pushing for electoral reform.”
The Liberals called for an end to the “first-past-the-post” system before their 2015 election victory
then rejected a special Commons committee’s recommendation to move to a proportional representation system
“They realized it didn’t actually help them,” Chan said
“The NDP is still pushing to have electoral reform so that people are able to feel like they can actually vote for the person they think will represent them best.”
“I support everybody’s democratic right to vote for whoever they want,” Gladu said
“I feel like I’ve been a strong voice for the community
and I have stood up for their views,” she said
“It wasn’t close in the last two (elections) for sure,” Gladu said
“That’s not to say things can’t change because politics is very dynamic
“There has been good response and good support for me at the door,” Gladu said
“Strategic voting is an interesting concept,” said Caroline Di Cocco
a spokesperson for the local Liberal campaign and a former provincial minister
it looks like the NDP are down quite a bit
according to some of the numbers that I’ve seen,” she said
‘the only poll that really counts is the one on election day,’” Di Cocco said
“It’s always up to individuals what they want to do.”
“But it looks like the Liberal numbers have gone up quite a bit in our area” and if more NDP support moved to the party’s candidate “we might have a chance of winning the riding,” she said
“It would be nice if there was more strategic voting in Sarnia

“We’re glad that we’re working collaboratively with council on this project,” police board chair Paul Wiersma said
“We really think that the community has to be united on it.”
The police board last week approved a $42,000 contract for Ventin Group Architects Ltd

said he thinks there should be public consultation on location options first
though issues with those include concerns about tower heights near aircraft
There’s been consultation on police station needs as part of the service board’s strategic plan talks in the community
and there will be opportunity for more as part of future budget deliberations
Burrell said he thinks the amount of land requested is too much
compared to the space the services is using now
The whole six hectares might not be needed and can be scaled down if required

More requirements under the provincial Community Safety and Policing Act make moving the station soon even more critical
“There’s an awful lot of issues here,” he said
Bill Dennis noted there’s sewage in the basement when it rains
I would highly recommend they contact the chief and ask for a tour,” he said
Another undetermined site would be needed for backup communications and 911 answering

Voters in Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong are sending Marilyn Gladu back to Ottawa
Conservative Marilyn Gladu was elected to a fourth term in the House of Commons in the 45th general election
Her victory was celebrated by dozens of supporters at The Royal Canadian Naval Association Monday
Gladu was first elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding of Sarnia-Lambton in 2015
she said she couldn't have done it without the help from her campaign team
"The challenge was 20,000 new people to introduce myself to
and to make myself available throughout the riding which has doubled in geographic size," said Gladu
we did that and the response at the doors was really good
We also had a lot of people who were in super rural areas
Gladu said there are a number of local issues that she would like to see addressed in the coming years
I've brought over $400 million to Sarnia-Lambton
I've got support for all the major projects," she said
"The government knows we have affordable housing projects that are shovel ready
Ontario Power Generation has also been given a mandate to develop the Lambton Generating Station with the co-gen small modular nuclear reactors and alternate energy plant in conjunction with Aamjiwnaang
The federal government needs to be a part of that
We don't have enough electricity on the grid
Gladu was pleased by the strong turnout during advance polls
"We had about 24,000 or more show up at the advance polls," said Gladu
"That just shows people are engaged in democracy
She wasn't concerned about having to work with a Liberal minority government
"One thing I've proven is that even when there's a Liberal government in place
I have those relationships to work across the aisle to get the money and the support we need here in Sarnia-Lambton
I'm determined to do that again," she said

He was optimistic most of the night that the riding could flip to red
but eventually he accepted the defeat as runner-up
"I came into this with my eyes wide open and I knew that I had a good shot
Although the local result wasn't what Vandenberg and his supporters wanted
the room vibrated with cheers when television broadcasters projected a Liberal government and again when Prime Minister Mark Carney was declared the winner of Nepean riding
"I met the Prime Minister on Friday night in London
I had a very nice discussion with him and I'm with him," Vandenberg said
He was also pleased with the turnout in the advance polls
but admitted the online vitriol he received during his campaign was tiring
"I wasn't exactly happy with some of the comments on Facebook against me
and I hope that people realize that using Facebook as that kind of medium is not acceptable," Vandenberg said
Roger Gallaway was the last Liberal to represent Sarnia-Lambton in the House of Commons
Gallaway was first elected as the member of parliament in 1993
and was re-elected three times until he lost to Conservative Pat Davidson in 2006
The local riding was renamed Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong under the 2022 Canadian federal electoral redistribution
It now includes all 11 Lambton municipalities and Walpole Island First Nation
and Dawn-Euphemia were previously included in the Lambton-Kent-Middlesex riding
Five other names were on the ballot Monday
Lo-Anne Chan ran for the New Democratic Party
Brian Everaert for the People's Party of Canada
Mark Lamore carried the banner for the Christian Heritage Party and Tony Mitchell represented the Rhinoceros Party of Canada
