the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation is proud to announce the selection of the City of Sorel-Tracy as the home of its 16th BLEU BLANC BOUGE community rink
Construction will begin in Simard Park in summer 2025
with the new facility scheduled to open in winter 2026
This donation from the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation to the City of Sorel-Tracy represents an investment of $2.6 million. The BLEU BLANC BOUGE program consists of building refrigerated
multi-sport outdoor rinks in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods
providing residents with local sports and recreational facilities that are both safe and inclusive
These rinks serve as vibrant community hubs
promoting physical activity and fostering healthy lifestyles
The Foundation will cover the rink's construction costs
including a CO2-powered high-efficiency refrigeration system
accessible player benches and boards designed for sledge hockey
as well as four basketball hoops on pivoting bases
The donation also includes 100 pairs of skates
100 helmets and 100 hockey sticks that local youths will be able to borrow for free to fully enjoy the rink
“This new BLEU BLANC BOUGE rink reflects our commitment to giving back to the community and our ongoing effort to bring high-quality multi-sport infrastructure to disadvantaged and often less underserved areas
helping young people in these communities stay active
It will provide children and families in Sorel-Tracy with additional sports and recreation facilities
allowing them to experience the benefits of incorporating physical activity into their daily lives
regardless of the season,” said Pierre Boivin
chairman of the board of the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation
The City of Sorel-Tracy will invest an additional $3 million to enhance the project by adding a permanent roof over the rink
complete with integrated lighting and sound system
This structure will extend the ice season and protect the surface from weather conditions year-round
The City will also make improvements to the immediate vicinity of the rink
and the service building will be upgraded to accommodate technical equipment and house public amenities such as the locker room
“The City of Sorel-Tracy is very grateful for this generous donation from the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation
The community mission of the BLEU BLANC BOUGE rink perfectly aligns with one of the City’s priorities of using sports as a lever for social development
With a proud history of five Stanley Cup champions coming from Sorel-Tracy
this rink may inspire a new generation of hockey players to embrace sports
Thank you to the Foundation!” added Patrick Peloquin
To ensure the initiative's success and longevity
This dynamic partnership is based on a shared goal of improving the health of children in disadvantaged areas
M361 supports the Foundation in selecting the communities where these rinks will be established
developing effective activation and programming
The City of Sorel-Tracy stood out for its commitment to strengthening its sports infrastructure by developing modern recreational facilities and equipment accessible to all citizens
which encourage the free practice of physical activity
the site of the future rink is surrounded by a high concentration of primary and secondary schools
creating a large pool of youths aged 0 to 17 who will be able to take advantage of these new amenities
Sorel-Tracy has also distinguished itself through its history of successful collaborative projects
demonstrating the close cooperation of the region’s multi-sector groups around structuring initiatives aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and addressing the social determinants of youth health
Sorel-Tracy’s bid to host the Quebec Games in summer 2027 highlighted the exceptional mobilization of stakeholders from the sports
who came together behind a unifying project that places sports and youths at the heart of its priorities
Since the launch of the Foundation’s flagship project in 2009
14 refrigerated community rinks have been built through the BLEU BLANC BOUGE program across the province
A 15th facility will be inaugurated in January 2025 in La Cite-Limoilou borough of Quebec City
The Sorel-Tracy rink marks the 10th rink outside Montreal and the second in Monteregie
and reaffirms the Foundation’s commitment to providing Quebec youths with more opportunities to stay active throughout the year
The BLEU BLANC BOUGE rinks are built in accordance with NHL standards and dimensions (200 feet by 85 feet) and feature ice quality that meets the highest professional rinks standards
while offering the versatility to enjoy other sports over the course of the year
The skating season takes place from the end of November until mid-March
while various types of ball games like basketball
ball hockey and other sporting activities can be played on the concrete base slab in the spring
14 community rinks have been built: six in Montreal
located in the boroughs of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension

Marc-Andre Fleury understands that he's no longer in his prime

Fleury and the Wild will head to Bell Centre to take on the Montreal Canadiens (7 p.m

barring an unexpected matchup in the Stanley Cup Final
Fleury, the oldest player in the NHL, would face off against either 28-year-old Sam Montembeault or 23-year-old Jakub Dobes

I know that the Canadiens have been playing some really good hockey for a few weeks now

there will still be plenty of Wild jerseys in the stands
Fleury's number 29 likely will be especially visible throughout the arena
"There will be a lot of people in the stands

There is now less uncertainty in Fleury's mind
He knows that retirement is looming at the end of the season
I was being honest: during my last trip to Montreal
I still didn't know if I wanted to play another season or not

SaskPower's coal-fired Boundary Dam electrical plant in Estevan and its workforce are facing uncertainty in the fac of the future energy transition
An ambitious project is aiming to future-proof the Canadian communities and workforces most vulnerable to disruption as the world transitions to a net-zero economy.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions here and abroad in the coming decades will drive changes in technology
Workers and communities across the country will be impacted
remote areas that are less economically diverse
vice president of research at the Institute for Research on Public Policy.
the Community Transformations Project has pinpointed populations and workers most susceptible to the changes
so all levels of government can work with residents to devise appropriate strategies to anticipate
The multi-year initiative features resources like an interactive map and ongoing series of community profiles
policy briefs and expert-led research that will be available on the project’s website – which will show people how susceptible their community is.
From the top 68 communities on a scale ranging from moderately to most susceptible
groups and businesses interviewed for the project all share the desire for stable jobs and incomes to support their families
how do we build the transition to support that because it’s not really the approach that's been taken to date.”
of Canada’s communities will be fairly resilient to the net-zero transition
but the remaining communities will need targeted support based on their individual mix of impacts and needs
Alberta and Saskatchewan have the highest number of vulnerable communities due to coal
while Quebec has a number of susceptible communities due to food manufacturing and truck transportation
looking at the total percentage of the identified communities’ workforce vulnerability to anticipated change
followed by New Brunswick at 25 per cent and Alberta at 21 per cent.
Three factors were used to gauge a community’s vulnerability: intensity
those factors measured the proportion of employment in emissions-heavy industry; the emissions from big facilities relative to a community’s size; and the amount of employment in trade-heavy sectors expected to face big market transformations.
“We score each of the communities on those metrics
and we rank them from top to bottom,” Samson said.
would impact a town’s facility susceptibility rating
And heavy employment in emissions-intensive sectors in meat or oil and gas production might lead to a high intensity ranking
Towns facing imminent production transitions
like shifts to EV automotive manufacturing in parts of Ontario
The top 10 impacted communities based on all three metrics based on 2021 census data
include Channel-Port aux Basques and Harbour Breton in Newfoundland
Wood Buffalo and its improvement district in Alberta
Sorel-Tracy and Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel in Quebec
Screenshot of the Community Transformations Project map that goes live online Tuesday that shows the most susceptible communities to a net zero transition
the more vulnerable a community or census area's workforce is. The project is creating 10 community profiles featuring different industries and vulnerabilities as case studies that include potential lessons and possible courses of action.
are the first two communities being profiled.
Estevan residents and businesses are apprehensive about the impacts the phase-out of coal power and volatility of future oil and gas markets might have on the workforce
While Ingersoll was one of the first communities to make the shift from traditional auto manufacturing to electric vehicle production
noting the transition was not an easy one and involved rolling layoffs
retraining the workforce and the closure of some parts suppliers.
“It really led to this community-wide disruption,” Samson said.
what local leaders want there now is better access to social services
more government focus on ensuring that EV demand is strong
and greater flexibility in the employment insurance system.”
The project has developed a set of initial local government recommendations focused around local community development
Future recommendations will involve action at the provincial and federal level that can be taken to provide targeted support around employment insurance or for major employers in a community
what’s needed is a shift away from a scattershot
piecemeal approach by various levels of government
provincial and territorial governments should offer enhanced tax credits and subsidies to drive investment toward the communities that need it most
noting comprehensive and urgent support was directed to “energy communities” in the U.S
or to transition coal-based towns under Australia’s Net Zero Economy Authority
Local economic development planning could take place through federally funded Community Futures Organizations if sufficient resources were provided
Research shows programs and funding for economic diversification is in decline and few of the susceptible communities identified by the project have received major economic investment
“Somewhere like Estevan is looking for a lot more support,” she said.
“It’s nice that the government's helping them to beautify their Main Street
but that may not help them in the long-term in really transforming their economy.”

The small town of Sorel-Tracy is just that; a small town on the south shore of the St
Lawrence River about 75 km east of Montreal
It’s a typically quaint French-Canadian community where 97 per cent of its residents speak French only and where the hub of the town’s activities centre at the cross roads of its downtown business district
Tree-lined streets span outwards from the centre’s four corners of banks and small businesses to modest houses where the majority of the community’s residents live and have done so for generations
is a huge industrial complex that stands in shear contrast to its smaller neighbours just a few kilometers away
it’s such a massive property that it has its own postal code
And it deserves it too because the Rio Tinto
Fer et Titane (RTFT) plant that has called 1625 Route Marie-Victorin home for more than 60 years now is not only the size of a mini city in itself
but it’s also the only metallurgical complex of its kind in the world and for that alone
the complex is so big (with a capacity to produce more than one million tonnes of titaniferious slag annually)
that it’s recognized around the world as the key supplier of titanium dioxide pigment; a compound used in paints
location and proximity to customers and raw materials are keys to success and for those reasons
the Sorel-Tracy plant is in the perfect spot
It’s adjacent to the shipping lanes of the St
it’s just down the River from its Ilmenite mine at Lac Tio
an open-pit operation located just 43 km northeast of Harve-Saint-Pierre on the St
The mine is the largest massive rock Ilmenite deposit in the world with a life expectancy of more than 40 years at current production rates
Ore from the mine is extracted by blasting and is then crushed and shipped from Lac Tio to Harve-Saint-Pierre by train and onwards and further 800 km down river to Sorel-Tracy by ore carriers
The reduction plant at Sorel-Tracy has nine smelting furnaces where ore is transformed into titaniferous slags and iron
The slag is crushed and can be sold as is or sized and upgraded
grinding and upgrading by gravity separation (spirals)
is further upgraded by thermal treatment in rotary kilns and by magnetic separation
Upgraded kiln-treated ore (UKTO) is the feed for electric-reduction furnaces where pig iron and titania slag are eventually produced
an Ilmenit ore with specific sizes between 10 and 40 mm
is sold to steel mills throughout the world and is used to protect crucibles in blast furnaces
Liquid iron is used to produce high-purity pig iron or is transported to the steel plant or the metal powder plant for further processing
RTFT also produces a titaniferous slag from Ilmenite ore extracted at a new mine in Madagascar
The QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) operation consists of a mine
arrived in Canada last year and the mine is expected to produce approximately 750,000 tonnes per year when it reaches full capacity in 2012
RTFT complex is almost in the heart of the Sorel-Tracy community and because of its proximity
the company opened a tailing site known as P-84 to receive tailings from the water treatment plant to help ensure strict environmental monitoring of the site
Over the years the company has also signed a further agreement with Sorel-Tracy for the creation of an outdoor activity centre on part of the reclaimed P-84 site and has made additional contributions of more than $1 million for continuing development in the area

Rio Tinto will conduct a site visit of its Canadian operations for individuals working in the finance industry
The major miner will use the site visit to showcase its low-carbon aluminium smelters in Saguenay
This will include the Shipshaw power station
and the construction of its low-carbon AP60 smelter
The visit will also tour the iron and titanium facility at Sorel-Tracy
which is known as the world’s largest critical minerals and metallurgical complex
“We are well positioned to deliver value from the strong outlook for aluminium which is being driven by its critical role in electrification, with global metal demand set to rise by three per cent per year from 2023 to 2028,” Rio Tinto aluminium chief executive officer Jérôme Pécresse said
“Recycled material is expected to account for around half of that growth.”
The growing aluminium demand has allowed Rio Tinto to exceed London Metal Exchange (LME) aluminium prices by approximately 20 per cent over the last five years
The Matalco aluminium recycling joint venture has been a big contributor
with the initiative expected to generate around $70 million of operational
sales and marketing synergies per year by 2028
Rio Tinto has also set a plan to reach a total concentrate production capacity of 23 million tonnes of high-grade iron ore at its subsidiary
“We have stabilised our global footprint of low-carbon
world-class aluminium assets and now have clear pathways to raise both the EBITDA (earnings before interest
and amortisation) margin and return on capital employed for our aluminium business by five percentage points by 2030,” Pécresse said
“We expect to achieve this through our focus on operational excellence and technology
our increasing footprint in the recycled market
from our privileged access to North America – the world’s most attractive aluminium market – and by repowering our Pacific aluminium operations with lower cost renewables.”

Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium (RTFT) has started its BlueSmelting demonstration plant at its metallurgical compete in Sorel-Tracy
The plant will validate the BlueSmelting technology
which aims to decarbonize RTFT’s Quebec operations
The project involves an ilmenite reduction technology that could generate 95% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than the current reduction process
and metal powders would have a significantly lower carbon footprint
The demonstration plant will process 40,000 tonnes of ilmenite per year
making it the largest of its kind in the world based on this type of technology
The plant was constructed over 14 months and safely started
The project is a partnership between Rio Tinto and the Canadian government
Over $737 million will be invested over the next eight years to decarbonize the Sorel-Tracy facility and to position the business as a centre of excellence in critical minerals processing
The BlueSmelting technology was developed by scientists at Rio Tinto’s critical minerals and technology centre in Sorel-Tracy
The BlueSmelting plant is part of Rio Tinto's decarbonization strategy
which aims to reduce the company’s emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050
the BlueSmelting project has the potential to deliver a reduction of up to 70% in RTIT Quebec’s overall greenhouse gas emissions
a decrease of approximately 670,000 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent based on 2021 emissions or the equivalent to removing 145,000 cars from the road

have won significant gains in a new collective agreement
ending a nine-month strike during which they championed the need for federal anti-scab legislation
The collective agreement was ratified Monday
by members of Syndicat des Métallos/United Steelworkers (USW) Local 9599
The workers negotiated wage increases that will amount to 23.25% by 2025
as well as a 1.25% increase in their profit-sharing plan and a $2,000 lump-sum payment for union members who were on the picket line
the union members also beat back the employer’s demands for concessions on work schedules that would have adversely affected their work-life balance
and we stood our ground against inhumane working hours that would have threatened our family lives
spokesperson for the USW Local 9599 members
then prolonged the dispute by recruiting replacement workers to try to break the union members’ resolve
Although provincial anti-scab legislation exists in Quebec
the company’s marine operations fall under federal labour law
which does not prohibit the use of replacement workers
supported by the entire Steelworkers family and several FTQ (Quebec Labour Federation) affiliated unions,” said USW staff representative Luc Laberge
which allowed the employer to mitigate the effects of the strike
The strike at Océan remorquage clearly exposed the need for the federal government to pass anti-scab legislation
said Steelworkers’ Quebec Director Dominic Lemieux.
“This dispute would have been much shorter if there was a federal law prohibiting the use of replacement workers
noting the federal government has yet to fulfill its pledge to pass anti-scab legislation
“The workers at Océan remorquage carried the torch for a federal anti-scab law
not only for themselves but for all those who will follow
We thank them and we promise to continue this battle
The Liberal government must fulfill its promise before the end of the year
We’re going to hold their feet to the fire until they do so,” he said

Rio Tinto Fer et Titan (RTFT) announced the opening of its new scandium oxide plant at its metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracy
of which $650,000 came through the Quebec Plan for the Development of Critical and Strategic Minerals
less than six months after the start of construction,” Rio Tinto said in a press release
Production is projected to reach a capacity of three tonnes of scandium oxide per year
The plant uses a process developed by Rio Tinto that extracts scandium oxide out of waste produced from titanium dioxide production
which the company says requires no additional mining

Rio Tinto plans to supply approximately 20 per cent of the global market for scandium
the company also plans to produce aluminum-scandium alloys to meet further market demands
customers will benefit from a North American supply of scandium oxide for applications in solid oxide fuel cells
lighting products or as an additive to produce high-performance alloys,” said Leblanc
Quebec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonatan Julien expressed his pleasure at the efficiency with which the plant was constructed
especially given the economic challenges presented by the pandemic: “The completion of projects like this strongly encourages us to keep pushing for socio-economic development projects
[...] This project allows us to concretize the vision Quebec has with regard to critical and strategic minerals.”
