Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet arrives for a federal election campaign stop in Terrebonne
The Liberals have dropped from 169 to 168 seats – four short of a majority government – after a validation process that flipped the Quebec riding of Terrebonne from the Liberals to the Bloc Québécois
What had been listed as a 35-vote Liberal win has been updated to a 44-vote Bloc win
the updated party standings for the House of Commons would be 168 Liberal seats
A spokesperson for Elections Canada confirmed that the returning officer completed a validation process Thursday afternoon
That process involves a review to catch and correct any data-entry or calculation errors
Elections Canada’s website has been updated to reflect the validated results
They show the Bloc’s Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné
just ahead of 38.7 per cent support for Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste
Liberal Party spokesperson Jenna Ghassabeh also confirmed that the results will trigger an automatic recount
it’s important that every vote is counted,” she said in an e-mail

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the Bloc won the riding after a recount
It was actually after an Elections Canada vote validation process
The Bloc Québécois has won the riding of Terrebonne after a vote validation process
taking it from the grasp of the Liberal candidate who previously thought she won by a small margin
The seat count for the parties is now 168 for the Liberals and 23 for the Bloc
The Bloc’s Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné won by 44 votes over Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste in the riding north of Montreal
She confirmed the result in a social media post Thursday afternoon
Auguste was previously declared the winner by 35 votes
“We will now proceed to a judicial recount,” Sinclair-Desgagné wrote in her Facebook post
“For someone to be officially declared elected
we must wait until this process is complete
“Thank you for your continued support
I hope to have the honour of representing Terrebonne again in the coming years.”
The riding was put in electoral limbo after the Bloc Québécois was informed by Elections Canada of errors made during the vote count for the riding
Elections Canada’s validated results indicate that Sinclair-Desgagné received 23,340 votes
while Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste received 23,296
Terrebonne is eligible for an automatic judicial recount because the vote difference between the top two candidates is below one thousandth of the total number of votes
the threshold was 60 votes because 60,204 ballots were cast
“Validation checks to make sure that what was counted at the polls is what stands as the final result,” Elections Canada spokesperson Diane Benson told CityNews
“Although the result following a recount
Elections Canada’s validated results indicate that 60,204 valid votes were cast in the riding and 903 ballots were rejected
Preliminary results said there were 60,130 valid votes
Benson explained results are unofficial until they are validated
something that “typically happens within a week following election day.”
“Since the local Elections Canada office gets the results from each polling location by phone before entering them into the system
human error can happen during the reporting process (e.g
if staff at the Elections Canada office misheard a result that was called in or made a mistake entering the data into the system),” Benson wrote in an email
“The validation step enables the returning officer to find and correct any errors that may have been made.”
Elections Canada explains that validation involves checking the official records from each individual polling station and correcting any errors made during the transmission of results on a busy election night
As results are validated, they’re posted on their website. This continues until all validated results are in
the validation process is transparent and open to scrutiny,” said Benson
“The entire process is witnessed by candidates or their representatives so there is added accountability.”
unless changes are made following a judicial recount or a contested election proceeding
The official voting results that are published several months after the election are the same as the validated results

Terrebonne may soon have a state park and no fluoride in its drinking water
Two bills authored by State Senator Mike Fesi go before the Louisiana House this week for vote
One turns the 4,000 acres of Terrebonne land
conferring all the protections and regulations therein
and the other halts the addition of fluoride into Louisiana drinking water
which experts say is a cost-effective way of strengthening teeth
Fesi’s Senate Bill 2 went through a number of changes before passing the Senate
including potentially banning the use of chlorine gas to purify the water
Ultimately the only change that stuck was that now the public can opt out of his changes
and if they decide they want to put it back in
people will see why we took it out,” Fesi said
“And so they’ll start digging in and they’ll do their own research
If the bill passes the House and is signed into law by Gov
the immediate effect is that all water districts will have to cease adding fluoride to the drinking water
Once the bill passes and the fluoride is halted
then the local authorities may hold an election
and the public may vote to have the fluoride added back in
Fesi said he believes fluoride affects people’s brain function. The Louisiana Poison Director Dr. Thomas Arnold said data has been collected since the 1940s
and there are no health concerns associated with the levels currently used statewide
the fluoride has proven to strengthen teeth and no risks have shown associated with anything below 1.2 parts-per-million
Director of Terrebonne Waterworks Mike Sorbert said he keeps the levels at .7 parts-per-million

a recount for Terrebonne will take place as the Bloc candidate came out ahead by just 44 votes
OTTAWA - The federal riding of Terrebonne in Quebec has gone from the Liberals’ win column back to the Bloc Québécois after a postelection vote validation process
said in a social media post that she came out with a lead of 44 votes and that a judicial recount will take place
“For someone to be officially elected
you have to wait until the end of this process,” Sinclair-Desgagné wrote in French
“I hope to have the honour of representing Terrebonne again in the coming years.”
The preliminary results had Auguste up by 35 votes
said the returning officer finished the validation process Thursday afternoon
He said the validation process involves a returning officer examining the record of votes counted at polling stations to catch and correct any data entry or calculation errors in a riding
McKenna said a recount happens automatically if the difference in votes between the first and second-place candidates is within 1/1000 of the total number of votes received

The Parti Québécois recaptured a long-time stronghold northeast of Montreal
winning the riding of Terrebonne in a by-election Monday
The PQ’s Catherine Gentilcore won by taking 52.74 per cent of the votes cast
compared to 28.78 per cent for the Coalition Avenir Quebec’s Alex Gagne
Quebec Solidaire and the Conservative Party of Quebec were all well back
prompting cheers from PQ supporters gathered
waving Quebec flags in a Terrebonne hotel room
Voters went to the polls to replace former economy minister Pierre Fitzgibbon
The former high-profile cabinet minister in Francois Legault’s government quit politics in September 2024 and the riding had been vacant since
Terrebonne on Montreal’s north shore had been held by Fitzgibbon since the Coalition Avenir Quebec formed government in 2018
but it had for the most part been a traditional safe seat of the sovereigntist PQ going back to 1976
PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon called Monday’s win a “decisive victory.”
“I am convinced that Catherine will be an excellent MNA for Terrebonne and that she will never let them down due to lack of motivation,” he told PQ supporters
Legault spoke to supporters at Gagne’s election night gathering and said what mattered was regaining the seat in the next provincial election scheduled for October 2026
“I want to tell her to take advantage of it,” Legault told those gathered
The PQ had made the riding a priority with Gentilcore
securing the party’s fifth seat at the legislature
The sovereigntist party sits fourth among current parties in terms of seats
but has been atop the polls in Quebec under St-Pierre Plamondon and has now captured back-to-back provincial by-elections
Legault’s party also lost a third by-election in Montreal to Quebec Solidaire in March 2023
The PQ was seen as the clear favourite in Terrebonne, with poll aggregator website QC125.com estimating the sovereigntist party’s victory probability at 98 per cent
Legault noted by-elections are rarely favourable for a government
“This is an opportunity for citizens to say: ‘I didn’t like that decision,” the premier said
The by-election also took place amid trade tensions between Canada and the United States
Legault called for the vote while he was in Washington in an attempt to dissuade U.S
President Donald Trump from imposing tariffs on Canadian products
Legault’s party holds 86 seats in the legislature
