Dump Guys The Kitchen Witches and goldfish (a world premier).  “Recovery Through The Arts” was a fun flaneur find Saw this door just off of Main Street and decided to explore Inside was an art gallery with 10+ different individuals using art as a means of dealing with personal issues I was surprised at how big the beach is - turns out there are four beaches – Main Beach Erie Rest Beach and Pumphouse Beach.  Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes which means it is also the warmest The beaches have Blue Flag designation i.e a Blue Flag beach signifies it has been recognized by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) for meeting high standards in water quality and environmental education. It's an internationally recognized eco-label that indicates a high level of quality and environmental responsibility.   Mackies restaurant has been on the beach serving up its famous hot dogs fries and orangeade.  We gave them a try but personally I would pass on them next time as there is nothing special about the dog the young girl who severed me was perhaps the most pleasant young server I have ever had.  Who knew that Port Stanley was once known as the “Coney Island of the Great Lakes?” I didn’t  It has a rich history for anyone who is a history buff I am thinking a perfect day in Port Stanley would include a train ride early dinner at one of the restaurants and then the theatre This blog discusses everyday tourist opportunities ideas and issues from various perspectives focusing on urban experiences. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited provided credit is given to Everyday Tourist Thoughtfully designed by fresh & nimble Donald Trump may be threatening tariffs on films made outside the US but France is happily cheering a Hollywood invasion next week The annual Cannes Film Festival has its most glittering line-up for years Joaquin Phoenix and Tom Hanks and the directors Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater Robert De Niro will be in town to accept an honorary award and some guy called Tom Cruise will toast the world premiere of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning Even the jury for the Palme d’Or includes Halle Berry and Succession’s Jeremy Strong although it is headed by the French actress Juliette Binoche this year features directorial debuts from Scarlett Johansson BY Megan LaPierrePublished Mar 20 Toronto's very own the Beaches are slated to grace some of the world's biggest festival stages this season, and it sounds like they have some new material to entice the crowds at the likes of Coachella and Osheaga: the band have announced their forthcoming new single "Last Girls at the Party," featuring production and writing from Australia's foremost sapphic icon G Flip The Beaches' last studio album remains 2023's Blame My Ex, featuring the near-titular single that launched their career into the international stratosphere. I heard a recurring comment from the locals "Have you made it over to 30A yet?" said my Lyft driver "You've got to — it's the up-and-coming spot around here." While purchasing tickets for the Shell Island Ferry "Do you have plans to go over to 30A?" When I said no she insisted I return to the area for a trip because it's just so beautiful I live in a different Florida beach town that often gets inundated with spring breakers and summer beachgoers so I couldn't decide if Panama City Beach locals were trying to run tourists out of town or if they really meant what they said about 30A Turns out, those locals were right. I think 30A is one of the best gems in Florida and I liked it even more than Panama City Beach Panama City Beach reminds me of the beach towns I grew up visiting in the Northeast: lots of souvenir shops and more tourist attractions than one could squeeze in during a vacation There's lots of good food in PCB, including a crepe shop adored by reviewers on Yelp but I'd say the general vibe of the area can best be described as "touristy beach town." The landscape changes entirely when you drive just 15 or 20 minutes to 30A High-rise hotel chains become private rental cottages and souvenir shops give way to luxury shopping venues The overall vibe switches from a busy vacation spot to a place where you'd do beachfront yoga and sip freshly pressed juice before spending your day on a quiet The beaches alongside 30A communities like Rosemary Beach and Seaside are home to white sand and transparent blue water you need a wristband or beach tag — visitors can get these from whichever rental property they're occupying I think the beaches benefit from the lack of large nearby hotels and public access resulting in a beautiful setting that feels more intimate There are some spectacular sunsets along the Gulf of Mexico I especially loved watching the sunset from Bud and Alley's a Seaside restaurant with sweeping coastal views I watched the sun set from the beach and was equally blown away by the beauty around me I chose a rental property between Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach with ample spacious sidewalks and bike lanes throughout Lots of condos or hotels here come with bicycles plus there are many rental companies in the area I took a beach cruiser from my condo over to Rosemary Beach for coffee or a meal or I'd bike down 30A and stop to explore each town I drove to some of the farther-away-from-me spots and the area was simple to navigate by car with my phone's GPS system a beach community where the movie "The Truman Show" was filmed a small boardwalk area with shops and restaurants It felt relaxed and not too pretentious, but more upscale than Florida beach towns like Fort Lauderdale and it's the spot along 30A where I saw the most families with children If Seaside is a family-friendly-but-upscale beach town Alys Beach is on the opposite end of the luxury vacation spectrum This small community is filled with white-washed stone vacation homes and Mediterranean-inspired architecture — it felt like a big resort there's nothing comparable to Alys Beach in Florida that I've seen Because of its stunning homes and high-end feel Alys Beach feels like one of the least-accessible-to-the-public areas in 30A especially because I saw so many residential streets with signs prohibiting the public from walking through or taking photos If you're interested in vacationing in a more private area of 30A Rosemary Beach has made its rounds on TikTok going viral for its similarities to a little European town Its downtown area is lined with cobblestone streets full of shops and al-fresco eateries and it has a hotel complete with spires that reminded me of something I'd see in the Swiss Alps I passed many street carts selling wares like scarves and fresh flowers and homes with European-style architecture The area also has beautiful private beaches which can only be accessed with a key card and Rosemary Beach are perhaps the most famous spots along 30A but I was impressed with the lesser-known areas I visited You truly could make an entire day out of exploring the tiny towns and communities that make up this beautiful part of Florida I stopped by Eden Gardens during my visit — a 163-acre state park home to sweeping gardens The area also has a collection of coastal dune lakes a rare saltwater and freshwater phenomenon that only exists in a few spots around the globe I've lived in Florida for nearly 10 years and call a small ocean beach town home As someone who's spent time on both the gulf and ocean side of the Sunshine State I can say 30A is one of the most stunningly beautiful areas in all of Florida and it has a peaceful vibe I've rarely found in Florida beach towns I can't wait to return to 30A and think it's the perfect destination for everything from bachelorette parties to family vacations This family-friendly gathering invites residents to come together in a collective effort to clean our riverbanks. Pre-order it here The most important stories and least important memes After more than a decade as a band and copious amounts of critical acclaim in their native Canada, indie-rock quartet The Beaches have finally - thanks to a viral hit with last year’s single ‘Blame Brett’ - been reaching ears far away from hometown Toronto keyboard and guitarist Leandra Earl and drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel they’ve spent late summer on a sold-out UK tour with pit stops at Reading and Leeds and following last year’s second album ‘Blame My Ex’ have just put out anthemic new track ‘Jocelyn’ We caught up with Jordan to dig into the band’s long-in-the-making popularity surge and how The Beaches are fully owning their femininity How does it feel to have had a viral moment with your single ‘Blame Brett’ Did you anticipate the reaction? It’s surreal because we’ve been doing it for so long; we’ve been playing together for almost 15 years Every artist hopes their next song will take off or have a viral moment I was broken up with just before all the COVID relationships ended - when we put the track out a lot of people were experiencing heartbreak right after I did and connected to the message Was there ever any hesitation about explicitly naming your ex on the track? We’d been broken up for about six months We tried other names but it works best with the alliteration and then he didn’t like it when it went viral but he’s since come around again and his band actually covered it Would you describe your album ‘Blame My Ex’ as a breakup album?Yes That’s what I want my ex to feel like: like he can cry and dance at the same time I find it very difficult to be vulnerable and open; I like to bathe a lot of things in humour it wasn’t purely a bad experience - I experienced a lot of joy and a lot of sadness It’s about rediscovering yourself while mourning the loss of a relationship Can you tell us a little bit about the origins of the band?Me and my sister have been playing together since we were six and seven We formed the band in high school with Eliza I remember playing a midnight slot at a local bar in Toronto when we were still in high school - I don’t know how we were allowed to do that after we had just been dropped by our second label ‘If this next record isn’t the thing that breaks you internationally I don’t know how successful a career you guys can have’ That motivated us and we wrote a record that we would want to listen to "I think it’s the most human thing ever to have low self esteem and to compare yourself to other people." - Jordan Miller Do you feel like The Beaches’ sound and dynamic has changed over time?Yes It’s still a collaborative experience but our sound has changed a lot you can hear all our previous work within it but also none of it It’s definitely the most feminine and least rocky we really rejected that label and connotation and we wanted to make our sound as hardcore as possible in order to get male fans I don’t really care what men think about our music The people I’m making music for are the girls How does it feel to be playing on your first sold-out UK tour and what do you want people to take away from The Beaches’ shows? It’s a mindfuck that we sold out this tour and we’re able to live out our dreams I hope what [the audience] take away from us is that it’s cool to be yourselves and cool to be messy and strange And that the people who will always have your back will be your girlfriends ‘Jocelyn’ - tell us a bit about how the track came together Do you have any standout memories from writing/ recording it?Jocelyn had kind of an interesting inception When we went back into the studio to start working on the next record we were still experiencing the mind-warping feeling of going viral I was in a weird place with my mental health; I was still recovering from the loss of my breakup; still experiencing quite a lot of self doubt experiencing a low self image while a lot of people are praising you I believe it was [‘Jocelyn’ and ‘Blame My Ex’ co-producer] Lowell who mentioned it could be fun to write about a real fan and sing this song to her So we checked our Instagram to see if anyone followed us with that name The song just kind of came together after that ‘Jocelyn’ has a PHD in politics - what did you want the song to say about self esteem and the (always terrible) act of comparing yourself to others?I don’t think that we were ever trying to be preachy with any particular message It was really just about what we were going through personally at the time I think it’s the most human thing ever to have low self esteem I guess what I’m trying to say in the song is you never know what’s going on with other people’s inner lives This is your second new single of 2024 - what can we expect next from The Beaches?New music ‘Blame My Ex’ and ‘Jocelyn’ are out now via AWAL Recordings £24.99 Get the best of DIY to your inbox each week Latest Issue April 2025 Advertise with DIY ↑ Back to the top The Toronto band brought high energy to it at the major festival, with the Australian musician joining them for the new single "Last Girls at the Party." They specifically found a fan named Jocelyn to write it about BY Alex HudsonPublished Sep 18 The Beaches have shared their latest single a tribute to their rapidly-growing fan base titled "Jocelyn." The song is more in line with their jangly, new wave-y numbers, rather than the full-blown bangers of the "Blame Brett" mould. The song's roots are in the session for last year's Blame My Ex, when co-writer Lowell kept singing the name "Jocelyn," and the band decided to seek out a fan named Jocelyn to dedicate the song to "We wanted to write about the experience of feeling undeserving of all the reverence that was being thrown away after 'Blame My Ex' did so well All of us in the band are just a bunch of messy girls and we felt strange about the way that some people were putting us on pedestals," singer Jordan Miller said in a statement "We kind of wrote it about this brilliant young woman and about the experience we were going through feeling uncomfortable and undeserving of Jocelyn's adulation." It was "a unique experience and something I'll always remember" BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 3 Once known primarily as Steve "The Hair" Harrington from Stranger Things, Joe Keery has made a big splash with his music project Djo — so much so that the Beaches performed a cover of his viral hit "End of Beginning." Keery said this for his appearance on the show Like a Version — the same show that the Beaches covered "End of Beginning" for the Beaches shared the clip of Keery on TikTok and wrote "Thank u for the kind words @Djo and for making such a fun song to cover." Djo sadly didn't return the favour, and instead covered HAIM's "Gasoline." Watch him talk about both HAIM and the Beaches below. Can we hear Djo's version of "Blame Brett" next? often feels like a revolving door and Eliza Enman-McDaniel have earned their place on both sides of the Atlantic a subject matter they’ve embraced with the same ferocity as their live performances Over champagne at their label’s offices in London we caught up with The Beaches to discuss everything from the pressure of maintaining their creative momentum to the surreal reality of having audiences belt out lyrics about their personal relationships What’s your relationship with the city like and it was one of the first places we ever toured in The only thing that I’d say is daunting is the driving There’s a daunting element because you’re playing to proper music fans Q: Do you feel that pressure performing to such knowledgeable audiences Jordan: People here will go to shows even if they don’t know the band A lot of people I know go to a gig every week and want to be impressed Q: You’ve played other European cities like Paris It was one of the most hype crowds we’ve played to and I think that’s because not as many bands come through there there are so many artists trying to break through that it’s diluted people are more excited because it’s rarer Leandra: I think it’s because North American acts don’t come through here often For our Outernet show a couple of months ago so people were just holding onto hope we’d come back Q: Let’s talk about ‘Blame Brett’ how do you feel performing a song that’s become so massive Jordan: I was actually really nervous when it started to take off am I going to have to relive the trauma of this breakup again and again?” When I perform Everyone’s been in a relationship with a ‘Brett’ or been a ‘Brett’ It’s funny that for the rest of our career Q: How do you cope with the pressure of following up on a song like that Kylie: Once you release a song and people start singing those words back to you The meaning shifts because of their personal connection to it I don’t even think about my ex when I perform it anymore Q: You’ve been together as The Beaches for over a decade “You guys need to be posting on social media.” I was like we’re about the music!” But that’s changed and we realised that’s how young people find music now Q: How does it feel to now be independent after parting ways with your label Jordan: We signed with a major label when we were 15 so we were in the system for most of our career Getting dropped gave us an opportunity to clear house and do things our way Q: Do you ever think about walking away from music I don’t think any of us wanted to walk away The hardest part now is not sleeping and all the travelling Jordan: I had a moment of doubt before we wrote Blame My Ex I thought maybe we weren’t breaking through because the songs weren’t good enough But I had my bandmates and manager’s support How did that impact your music and the band’s dynamic Leandra: I didn’t have a big plan to come out I just integrated my girlfriend into posts My fear was about how fans in less progressive areas might react Fans did start asking for songs that reflected queer experiences which was something we were open to exploring Q: What’s your plan for your free time in London Eliza: We’re kind of short on free time now but since our Leeds show was cancelled because of the weather which is where our grandparents got married Keep up to date with the best in UK music by following us on Instagram: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coachella (@coachella) guitarist-vocalist Kylie Miller opens up about making their Coachella debut and wanting to collaborate with Chappell Roan The annual “Opening of the Beaches” parade And this month — May 23 — will mark the 100th anniversary of the day Pablo Beach was renamed Jacksonville Beach On that day, Times-Union columnist Bill Foley wrote decades later “Jacksonville Beach arrived with the first official opening of the Beaches 1925.” but the name had changed and now everything was new and improved and onward and upward.” So this seems like a fitting month to write an ode to our beaches in 2025 touting some list of the top beaches in America as a potential column topic I’ll sometimes glance to see what Florida beaches are on the list Not even the Boneyard Beach of Talbot Islands TripAdvisor has three Florida beaches on its top 10 of 2025 “Best of the Best Beaches” in the United States: No As a Gannett employee, I probably should mention that USA TODAY is inviting readers to vote for their favorite Florida beach by May 19 in its 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. And as someone who not only lives in Duval County but sincerely believes we have some of the best beaches in th state I probably should encourage people to vote for Jacksonville Beach But I have mixed emotions about our beaches being on these lists I covered surfing contests at Cocoa Beach and hung out at some classic beach bars I went to beaches up and down the Gulf Coast that often end up on these lists (my sister got married on one of them) sit at the News Cafe and watch the people go by I understand the appeal of some of these other beaches the places that feel like they’re straight out of Jimmy Buffett song Some of it involves the actual beaches — I’ll come back to that — but some of it is simply the matter of getting to the beach making your way to the sand and trying to find an open patch somewhere Every time I go to Hanna Park and find hundreds of open parking spots I always think about how different this is from other parts of the state And then when I walk up one of the wooden boardwalks and the tree canopy opens up to a panorama — rolling dunes the expanse of water — I think my wife is right when she says it’s one of the prettiest views in Jacksonville There’s a gazebo where she used to take her wheelchair-bound mother They’d sit there for hours and listen to the ocean listen to old music that made her mom tap her fingers and Maybe this is where I should confess: I’m not a beach person Or at least not in the sense of setting up an umbrella My ideal beach day might be the start of one A few clouds to make the sky more dramatic when the sand is firm enough to drive on — but thankfully that isn’t allowed Our beaches are some of the best anywhere for walking you’ll see a beach that looks like a parking lot for Model Ts still places where you can drive on Florida beaches While I get the appeal of it — we’ve parked our campervan on the sand at Huguenot — I’ll take a beach without cars When I walked across Jacksonville, from west to east, I made a point not just to end on First Street, or at Pete's Bar, but to finish walking on the beaches. the day before another Opening of the Beaches I know some people (including my wife) love summer at the beach but I’ll gladly take a slightly chilly morning before the crowds return An idea for another paradeWhen I think about people who know and love our beaches Bill Longenecker is one of the first to come to mind But he has spent much of the last 72 years on the sand and in the water “I still remember my first night at the beach,” he said “We stayed at a motel that doesn’t exist anymore He didn’t just grow up at the beach and get hooked on surfing. For more than 40 years of his adult life, he got up before dawn, headed down to the edge of the ocean, checked the surf conditions, then filed a phone report. That tradition came to an end in late January doomed by the age of online surf reports and surf cams But most mornings, Longenecker still is at the beach by sunrise, getting in a swim with friends. And he’s still going to elementary schools, telling students about how our beaches actually are “retired mountains.” When I asked him about the Opening of the Beaches, he noted that they never actually close. Which is true. The opening is a tradition that goes back to when many oceanside businesses would close for the winter, then reopen in the spring. The beaches always were open. But our beaches do get quieter. And Longenecker says those are his favorite times. Early spring, before the crowds return, and late fall, when the crowds fade but the water is still warm. “I always wanted to have a parade in September and march backwards for a block to close the beach,” he said. “But that didn’t catch on.” Notable artists putting out new work today include Lowest of the Low, Sister Ray, young friend, Kasador and Melanie Fiona. Their most recent album, 2023's Blame My Ex, came out exactly a year before their Sunday performance at Rifflandia It was an album inspired by lead vocalist/bassist Jordan Miller getting dumped by Brett Emmons from the Glorious Sons followed sometime thereafter by guitarist/backing vocalist Kylie Miller and keyboardist/backing vocalist Leandra Earl getting dumped only drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel survived this apocalyptic patch unscathed Most people do get dumped at some point in their lifetime and many of them found this album to be quite healing sending the band on a journey that landed their sophomore album on the 2024 Polaris Music Prize shortlist pleading for a few more songs after his set began 20 minutes late I'd seen the Beaches perform a couple times before and they were excellent both of those times but something hit me far more profoundly this time around Leading up to their stripped-down performance of "If a Tree Falls," Miller confessed that it was her favorite song from Blame My Ex the first song she wrote after her breakup and she seemed to bring that moment back for us in a real way Even though there was a lot of bass bleeding over from the rave in the Dome and the rap at the Dinosaur World Stage vocal-driven rendition of "If a Tree Falls" blew past the arguably over-produced album version to break something loose inside me that I'd never experienced at a concert before It wasn't anything specific in the words of the song that struck me There was just something so powerful in how they channeled their pain with Miller putting down her guitar to belt out the feeling forging undeterred through disparate competing sounds to express something so singularly beautiful and healing not unlike the finest compositions of HAIM or post-blues Fleetwood Mac I would continue crying intermittently for the duration of their set After dropping "Want What You Got" from their 2019 EP The Professional, they lamented that their flight to Victoria happened to be booked up with contestants from the latest season of Canada's Ultimate Challenge, who were reportedly horrible travel companions. The band hopes they all lose. They also mentioned that the last time they were in Victoria, when the Beaches played the Philips Backyard event Tilt in 2022, one of the women fell down and "ate shit" hard. The feels were clearly being felt this evening, though. Near the end of their set, Leandra Earl said that she'd been having trouble getting out of bed in the morning over the past week or so. She wished well to anyone else who may also be suffering from "lesbian drama," as she had been, but we reminded her why she kept going. The Beaches employed "Blame Brett" as their big crowd singalong closer to great effect. While the song is hyper-specific, the feeling behind it translates easily to other situations. Certainly, singing along to that kept a tear in my eye until their last note.  The Beaches’ Leandra Earl surfs the crowd at the band’s headline gig at Budweiser Stage Even with lyrics tackling themes of depression and paranoia A critical assessment of the merits of a subject Reviews are based on the writer’s informed/expert opinion There has always been a heightened sense of excitement whenever a concert takes place during the Canadian National Exhibition Maybe it’s the overflow of gawkers wondering where the additional noise is coming from Or at least write a catchy-as-hell banger about it almost as if the band were soliciting votes for September’s Polaris Music Prize which I think they have a serious chance of winning given the songs’ quality in the face of the struggles the band have endured with Kylie Miller constantly running across the stage in her shimmering miniskirt trying to wave to everyone she knew while never missing a guitar lick the Beaches’ raspy lead singer and bassist didn’t waste any time stripping off her jacket later drinking a beer out of a Beaches koozie Earl sang lead at one point (while crowd-surfing) and then brought up an ex-girlfriend who also crowd-surfed Drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel appeared to be back in fine form as this was her first show since a wrist injury forced the band to borrow Valley’s Karah James for a few weeks audience members were united in rock that seems tailor-made for those who want something louder than today’s typical pop fare which fit well into the vibe they’ve been crafting for more than a decade Sending everyone home surprised and happy with a rockin’ cover of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck I didn’t think they could possibly top the reaction their viral hit I can’t remember the last time I’ve heard an audience scream back a chorus so loudly The Beaches don’t actually have much time to bask in the glow of their biggest headlining party They are in England this weekend to play the Reading and Leeds festivals and win over fans on another continent Even if they only give them a taste of what Toronto got it shouldn’t take this ambitious band long to accomplish another goal This place: A renovated home located in The Beaches neighbourhood near shops and the boardwalk Features: This renovated three-story home in The Beaches has over 3,700 square feet of living space It is steps from Queen Street East with cafes The main floor has an open feel with hardwood floors functional and equipped with sleek cabinetry and top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances where a gas fireplace and large windows create a cozy and airy space Built-in speakers in the dining area enhance the ambiance for entertaining the owner’s suite features a four-piece ensuite bathroom that includes a soaking tub and glass shower The additional two bedrooms have closets and a shared three-piece bathroom is a loft area with soaring 20-foot vaulted ceilings with a walk-out to a balcony The finished basement features two spacious bedrooms storage space and broadloom carpet throughout This home is a short walk from Woodbine Park and Ashbridges Bay Park which offer scenic waterfront views and picnic areas Thanks to Sam McDadi Real Estate Inc. This song ... is about exploring my own culpability in the messy parts of my new relationship, something I wasn't really capable of doing until now." Perhaps this is the same partner whose mom asked Miller not to write a song about her son The song is a fun, boppy anthem — although, with its lyrics about personal dysfunction, the tone is slightly moodier than the signature hit "Blame Brett." This time The band's album Blame My Ex was just short-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.
