That search led to an address in Vegreville where GHB was being produced in a basement lab of a residence within city limits
Vegreville RCMP searched the lab on a warrant
assisted by the RCMP northwest region’s clandestine laboratory enforcement and response (CLEAR) team
and Vegreville Fire and EMS on standby in case of fire or contamination
Authorities seized 38 litres of suspected 1,4-Butanediol (BD)
Mixed with liquid in either liquid or powder form
it can lead to a euphoric high and hallucinations
and it’s believed to have killed more users than MDMA
Considering a small quantity — 10 millilitres or about a cap full — would constitute a dose
there would have been more than 1,000 doses seized from the lab

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is facing criticism over new legislation that could make it easier to hold a referendum—including one on separating from Canada
The proposed bill lowers the threshold for citizen-led votes
sparking backlash from Indigenous leaders who say it violates treaty rights
Smith insists she supports a sovereign Alberta within Canada and says the law is about giving Albertans a voice—not pushing for separation
including the NDP and First Nations chiefs
say the move fans separatist flames and risks dividing the country at a time when unity is needed
The bill is still being debated in the legislature
voter turnout hit its highest level in decades
Nearly 68.7% of eligible voters cast a ballot
although it didn’t break the all-time record from 1958
The Bloc and NDP each captured 6.3% of the vote

and Marian Lemiski chat about gardening and the good old days with long-term care resident Orest Marusak
Story by Jonathan Koch | Photo by Elizabeth Myhovich
VEGREVILLE — Denise Komick began volunteering about seven years ago when her mother
was a long-term care resident in Vegreville Care Centre
The duo regularly played dice and card games with the residents in Annette’s continuing care unit
They also struck up a friendship with a newly arrived resident
“Everybody was pretty friendly with my mom
she knew most of them and they would come to my mom’s room
and that's how I got to know Orest,” says Komick
“Our family kind of took him under our wings.”
Kornick continued to volunteer at the care centre
along with her long-time friend Marian Lemiski
When the call went out for assistance to water and maintain the facility’s flower and vegetable gardens on weekends
but any program we need them for,” says recreation therapy assistant Tammy Eleniak
The duo also received a helping hand from their friend
the keeper of the watering key for his unit’s patio
Through his participation in gardening and other programming
Eleniak says he developed quite the trust for the ladies
“They kind of got into Orest’s heart and they're really close — they're quite cute,” she adds
working with the “Watering Ladies” to deadhead flowers
pick tomatoes and water the garden brings back fond memories of his mother and the garden and trees they tended on the family farm many years ago
it’s the patio visits that he enjoyed the most this past season
they’ve been outside so late that staff have forgotten they’re here
“They turn off the lights and lock the doors on us,” says Marusak
“We would just laugh then knock on the windows to get their attention
Marian Lemiski enjoys reminiscing with Marusak and Kornick about the good old days of Vegreville’s past
and there used to be the creameries where you took your cream to town
and we talk about all kinds of things,” she says
Recreation therapist Shae-Lynn Illingworth says it noticeably brightens Marusak’s day to chat with the pair
adding that the other residents also enjoy their company when they come to volunteer
The ladies are just so positive and always very chatty with them
“They are the type of people that if somebody needs something
The amount of love that these ladies share with everyone is amazing - they are angels.”
Thanks in large part to the trio’s efforts
the facility’s residents enjoyed a bounty of strawberries and fresh produce throughout the growing season
Volunteer resources coordinator Eli Myhovich says AHS volunteers are making a positive difference in the lives of the people they serve
“AHS volunteers provide companionship and support to our residents
which enhances their emotional well-being and overall quality of life,” says Myhovich
it also enriches the lives of our volunteers through personal growth
and provides them with a deep sense of purpose and satisfaction.”
Although fall has arrived the gardening has come to an end
their visits will continue indoors throughout the winter months
something Marusak says he’s truly grateful for

We are heading back to a Liberal government this morning with Prime Minister Mark Carney holding on to the title that fell to him following Justin Trudeau’s resignation
“Who’s ready to stand up for Canada with me?” Carney asked rhetorically
kicking off his victory speech at approximately 1:25 a.m
Recognizing the closeness of the popular vote
Carney reached out to those who voted Progressive Conservative: “I will always do my best to represent everyone who calls Canada home.”
It is still too close to call a majority or minority
even with 73,771 of 75,482 of polls reporting
though we are tilting closer to a minority at this stage
The Prime Minister elect is among 167 Liberal MPs leading their races at this hour
but the party was unable to break the 172 threshold to capture a majority
The Conservative Party of Canada is sitting as the official opposition leading in 145 ridings
with the New Democrats a distant fourth behind the Bloq
four away from maintaining official party status
Progressive Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre was trailing the Liberal candidate in his riding by roughly 1,200 votes with 251 of 266 polls reporting
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was well back in third in his riding
and he announced he will step down as leader once a replacement is named
Singh had to pause often to compose himself during his emotional speech
“Change takes time,” was Poilievre’s go-to three-word catch-phrase in his concession speech
This marks a fourth-consecutive mandate for the Liberal party
The election was deemed by many pundits to be a choice of which party and leader would have the best chance to defend Canada’s interests in the ongoing trade tariff war with U.S
Other major issues included housing affordability
general economic stability and climate policy and carbon taxes
with advance polling numbers topping 7 million in four days of voting
Bloc MPs taking up 33 seats and the NDP having 24 Members of Parliament
Swearing-in ceremonies will be confirmed for new MPs in the days ahead

May 6th from 10am to 3pm at the Vegreville Alberta Supports Centre at 5121 49 Street
PDT and polls have officially closed across the country in the 2025 federal election
The counting has been well underway in the rest of Canada east of the Pacific time zone
The main parties – the Conservative Party of Canada led by Pierre Poilievre
led by Jagmeet Singh – are looking to capture at least 172 seats in the House of Commons to form a majority government
This is based on the new total of 343 seats
reflecting the recent electoral redistribution that added five seats to the previous 338-seat configuration
Canada employs a first-past-the-post electoral system
where each of the 343 ridings elects one Member of Parliament
The candidate with the most votes in each riding wins the seat
regardless of whether they achieve an absolute majority
This system allows a party to form a majority government without necessarily winning the majority of the national popular vote
If no party achieves the 172-seat threshold
The governing party must then seek support from other parties to pass legislation and maintain confidence in the House of Commons
The Elections Canada website offers this breakdown of the counting process:
there were 17,209,811 votes cast for a turnout of 62.6 per cent
The Town of Vegreville has finalized the sale of commercially zoned land at 4846 50 Avenue to Edmonton-based developer Build Bright Homes

RCMP closed a portion of Highway 16 on Sunday
March 23 after suspects of a robbery at the Vegreville Petro Canada were tracked to the southern entrance of Elk Island National Park on Range Road 201A and Highway 16
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentEarlier that morning at approximately 5 a.m., RCMP received a report that a suspect entered the Petro Canada and pointed a firearm at an employee demanding they hand over money. The suspect then stole the employee’s keys and purse, fleeing in the victim’s vehicle.
Issuing a release at 6:34 a.m. on Sunday morning, RCMP warned drivers not to pick up hitchhikers in the area as the suspects were thought to be armed and travelling on foot.
The stolen vehicle was located by Vegreville RCMP while travelling west on Highway 16 towards Edmonton. After attempts by RCMP to stop the vehicle, the suspect fled leading to a brief pursuit that resulted in the driver losing control of the stolen vehicle and striking a fence at Elk Island National Park. As one suspect was arrested, two additional suspects fled the scene on foot.
RCMP deployed multiple resources to locate the remaining suspects including RCMP Air Services Helicopter, the Emergency Response Team, and Police Dog Services. In addition to the specialized forces, both Fort Saskatchewan and Strathcona County RCMP joined the search.
“Having access to all these specific units greatly increases the ability for these situations to end with a positive outcome,” said staff sergeant Colin Folk, who noted that drones and front-line members from all three detachment areas were an asset to the search.
At 10:50 a.m., RCMP announced the highway had been reopened after the two remaining suspects had been arrested. Upon searching the vehicle, officers found a black revolver style pellet gun.
Edmonton residents Robert Cardinal and Adam Coates, both 29-years-old, and Dakota Masson, 38, of Cold Lake have been charged with multiple offences including robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, intimidation, obstruction, and flight from police.
The three men appeared before a Justice of the Peace and were remanded into custody until future court dates when they will appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Vegreville.
“This call for service is an example of the severity of calls that the Alberta RCMP deal with daily,” said Folk. “I am extremely proud of my members in Vegreville. Their quick response and composure resulted in three individuals being arrested without injury to my members, the general public, and the suspects.
