West Kelowna fire crews responded to a fire that broke out early Monday morning along Highway 97 near the intersection of Grizzly Road
The photo shows the fire climbing the tree and multiple bushes catching fire around it
Brolund says investigators have not determined what started the fire but that it was likely human-caused
"We appreciate the quick notification from the public
which allowed us to knock this down while still small," Brolund says
No one was injured in Sunday morning's fire at Fintry Provincial Park
although the travel trailer that burned was completely destroyed
North Westside Fire Rescue responded to the fire on Fintry Delta Road at about 5:30 a.m.
and crews arrived to find a "fully involved" travel trailer
according to NWFR chief Ross Kotscherofski
"Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly but the RV was a total loss," Kotscherofski said
The cause of the fire remains under investigation
An RV went up in flames in Fintry Provincial Park Sunday morning
Large flames and black smoke were visible in the park
Some people in the area reported hearing a loud explosion during the fire
likely due to a propane tank catching fire
The cause of the fire is not known at this time
The RV fire comes after another large mobile home fire near Oyama early Saturday morning
A wildfire was discovered late Sunday in an area along Bear Lake Main Road
The BC Wildfire Service says the fire is located just north of Lambly Lake and is being held
It is 0.2 hectares and it is believed to be human-caused
Another spot fire was reported on the other side of Okanagan Lake
near Bertram Creek Regional Park on Thursday
It was also human-caused and was brought under control quickly
including eight in the Kamloops Fire Centre
All the fires in the Kamloops zone are either under control or being held
The bulk of this year’s fires have been in the Prince George Fire Centre
Residents of a Westside mobile home park say they have been questioned by police about a sudden death in their community
People who live in Westview Village mobile home park along Highway 97 report seeing several RCMP vehicles near a home in the park since early Saturday
One woman says she saw someone wearing a jacket with CORONER written on the back
Another neighbour says police have been going door to door asking for CCTV footage dating back to April 18
Investigators asked about any possible altercation in the area or anything suspicious and an RCMP officer confirmed to them that there had been a death
The resident noted that the serious crime unit was on the scene for hours on Sunday
Castanet has contacted the RCMP to request more details
West Kelowna RCMP were called to what witnesses described as a “violent” altercation at a home on a vineyard property Thursday night
The incident at the property at Reece and Elliott roads occurred about 8:30 p.m
Witnesses described seeing one man swinging a long stick or a bat while another was threatened with a machete
Brendan Dolan confirmed a disturbance did take place at the property
“There were some weapons like a long piece of wood that was just swung around,” Dolan tells Castanet
“The machete you referred to was just brandished but was never used during the attack or assault
“All parties are uncooperative at this point so there are no real investigative leads to follow at this point.”
Dolan says that could change if victims choose to re-engage police
He says there were no reports of injuries and no one was taken to hospital
According to Dolan it appears two groups of two were involved in the incident
Dolan did say police have attended the property previously but was not aware of the circumstances

What neighbours have described as a known problem house in West Kelowna has been the focus of significant police attention
Emergency Response Team vehicles have been positioned outside of a house on Drought Road in Westbank since shortly after 10 a.m
Area resident Judy Smith said she saw police officers
as well as RCMP dogs on the scene early in the day
At one point she saw them deploy a drone and enter a home in full tactical gear
“They also had one guy down and took him into a vehicle in handcuffs,” she said
What brought the police to the neighbourhood Friday isn’t clear
but the home is known to be a cause of some concern to neighbours
Police confirmed that West Kelowna RCMP and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team are currently on the scene in the 2400 block of Drought Road to execute a search warrant
"There is no danger to public safety," RCMP said
"Due to the nature of the search warrant no other details will be released at this time."
The RV fire comes after another large mobile home fire near Oyama early Saturday morning
A group of residents in Upper Fintry have started a petition to get their roads paved
The community was developed in the 60s but the roads in the area were never paved and over the years residents have had to live with dusty roads and potholes
Upper Fintry residents living on Dunwaters Drive
and Gray Street say they are developing health issues because of the poor road conditions and the dust
Eric Chopin and his wife live on Dunwaters Drive
have been lobbying the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and the Regional District of Central Okanagan to make changes to no avail for months now
"Many of the neighbours have breathing conditions which include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma
my wife being one of the affected," Chopin said
He says the provincial government has been pretty clear with him they have no intention of paving the roads in the area
the community has sent the ministry a petition signed by 62 residents
"The current state of these roads is unsustainable
and the number of potholes has become absurd — driving here often feels like a slalom course just to avoid damage to vehicles
It’s not just frustrating — it’s unsafe," the petition said
Chopin says residents were told if they want the area paved they should pay for it themselves
Castanet reached out to the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and were given the same information
there are no plans to upgrade existing gravel roads
to hard surfacing," the ministry said in an email
"Ministry staff are working closely with local maintenance contractor
to identify and prioritize opportunities for future improvements within the subdivision
such as drainage and surface gravelling."
Some residents have been trying to have the road situation addressed for years now say they don't know what to do next
"Our community believes the situation has reached a point where grading and dust suppression are no longer sufficient
and that permanent paving is necessary for safety
and environmental sustainability," said Andrew Dyczkowski
Upper Fintry resident Troy Van Dyk says he has worked in road construction for years so he says he knows what he's talking about when he says the paving would cost $1M

The City of West Kelowna has apologized for the short notice given to resident regarding debt repayment for the Rose Valley water project
“We apologize and recognize that we should have sent out information earlier in the year,” a statement from the city reads
A letter was sent to all property owners within the Rose Valley Water Local Area Service – those that receive service from the Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant and connecting transmission mains project
Residents were given two options for repayment. One was to have the amount added to their annual property tax bill starting in 2026
Residents choosing that option don’t need to do anything as the cost will be added automatically.
The second option the cost in one lump sum of $2,750 before the May 31 deadline
That short deadline was addressed in the city’s statement
“The letter was mailed April 25 to meet legislative processes and final deadlines for borrowing
we acknowledge that we could have juggled some things to try to send the letters sooner.”
The full statement, including questions and answers, is available on the city’s website
Residents can also email the ub.finance@westkelownacity.ca

The City of West Kelowna is finalizing its long-term borrowing plans for the Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant and Transmission Mains Project.
Now that the project has been completed on budget at $75 million
property owners in the Rose Valley Water Local Area Service are being notified about how to pay their share of the costs
Property owners in the service area will be receiving a letter shortly explaining the repayment options
customers’ share of the project debt will automatically be added to their annual property tax bill starting in 2026
based on the current interest rate of 4.02 per cent.
This is slightly higher than the $150 figure noted in 2020
which was based on a lower interest rate of 0.91 per cent
The final yearly amount will depend on the interest rate at the time of borrowing and how many property owners choose this option
The second option is to prepay the share of the cost in one lump sum of $2,750
Payments must be made to city hall (3731 Old Okanagan Highway) before the May 31 deadline
because the city must finalize borrowing arrangements with the Regional District Central Okanagan
and incorporate everything into the 2026 municipal budget
and online payments through financial institutions are not available for this specific one-time payment
The prepayment amount of $2,750 is lower than the $2,815 figure shared in the 2020 notice as there are now more properties in the service area
Questions can be directed to ub.finance@westkelownacity.ca or by calling 778-797-8850 and leaving a message

A clumsily worded explanation about a fee hike sent to West Kelowna residents has caused the city’s water woes to again boil over
and prompted a mea culpa from municipal officials
“We apologize to the users that got that letter
the chief administrative officer for West Kelowna
Bowles explained city staff have been fielding numerous calls about the Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant repayment plan and pointed out a few lines from the letter may have misled people
The letter that landed in mailboxes last week
The debt repayment will be added to your property tax bill as a parcel tax starting in 2026
The amount will be approximately $181 per year for 25 years,” the notice read
“Option 2: You can prepay your debt portion by submitting a payment in person to City Hall on or before May 31
Residents reliant on the new water plant already pay $150 a year and Bowles said people interpreted it to mean that there was an additional $181 added to their bills
they had to hand over $2,750 before May 31
“We went back and looked at the letter we sent the residents
it was a miscommunication or misstep on behalf of the City of West Kelowna,” Bowles said
“We were basically notifying residents that there will be a $31 additional charge (per year) on their utility bills.”
Bowles said the reason for the extra $31 a year is that while city savings
federal and provincial grant money have been applied to the bill
“We always planned to borrow those funds,” he said
When financing was first laid out the interest rates were considerably lower
It’s since gone up to more than four per cent
The charge people have been paying is $150 a year per household
With the borrowing process now underway the new figure is $181
to pay off the whole household amount in one shot
the $37.50 will be removed from your quarterly utility bill and you will not see a parcel tax on your property tax bill in 2026 or beyond for the Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant and connecting transmission mains project
“We don't expect people to pay for the water treatment plant out of their own pocket … we're giving them the option to pay us cash
and save yourself some money down the road,” he said
While there are explanations for what's transpired
An online petition calls for the city to rescind the "unfair payment."
Our city expects its citizens to shoulder a debt that was not of our making
negatively impacting our financial stability and peace of mind," the petition reads
The water plant has been a source of controversy since it open
After the McDougall Creek wildfire scorched the area around the treatment plant
numerous water quality advisories have been issues and notifications about the water issues have not always met the needs of the people who lived in the area
who only started at the city last September
is aware of these concerns and said the city is continually working to do better
West Kelowna Fire Rescue is on the scene of a gas leak in the Rose Valley neighbourhood
Residents of Rosefield Drive have been advised to leave their homes while crews work to cap a gas line
said a landscaping company hit a gas line while working in the area
She was told it would be about an hour before people would be allowed back into the neighbourhood
West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund said Fortis has responded to the scene and is working to fix the leak
He said the street would likely reopen soon
Some residents within the Rose Valley water local service area are confused after receiving a notice in the mail concerning repayment options for the new Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant
Property owners who choose Option 1 will have approximately $181 added to their yearly municipal tax bill beginning in 2026
The original amount identified in 2020 was $150 yearly at an interest rate of 0.91 per cent
however the city says current interest rates of 4.02 per cent have caused the yearly amount to go up
property owners could pay their portion of the water treatment plant in the amount of $2,750 by submitting that amount to the city before May 31
Local social media groups have lit up with with residents who are surprised and unhappy with the letters they are receiving, but the city says the repayment plan was established back in 2020, when the final cost of the treatment plant was determined
While the 25-year option will cost homeowners more because of rising interest rates, the city says it was able to lower the lump-sum total from the originally planned $2,815 due to growth of the community sharing the cost

says there is no estimated time for both lanes to reopen
"Wilson's Landing Fire Department is clearing the scene and AIM Roads (the province's roads contractor) is taking over," Kotscherofski added
Westside Road is closed in both directions in Traders Cove after an excavator fell onto the road
Cleanup crews are just arriving at the scene of the wreck south of the Bear Lake Main Forest Service Road turnoff
Brad Hunt did not witness the crash but came across it minutes after it happened
He says it appears the trailer hauling the excavator blew a tire
“The cops have got all their pictures completed right now
and the fire trucks are just trying to do a spill assessment,” he said
Crews are working to get at least one lane open this afternoon
DriveBC reports that won’t be until at least 3:30 p.m
The road will likely have to closes again for removal of the excavator

The fire burning in Upper Glenrosa is now more of a "nuisance" than anything
says West Kelowna Fire Rescue chief Jason Brolund
spread from nearby burn piles into a forested area Friday night
five WKFR firefighters are on scene working to extinguish the blaze
along with six BC Wildfire Service members
The BCWS has now classified the 0.1-hectare fire as "under control."

it's just going to take a lot of work and effort to put it out based on where it is," Brolund said
"It's just a creeping fire that expanded away from some burning piles that were there."
Firefighters with the BC Wildfire Service and West Kelowna Fire Rescue continue to work to extinguish the fire burning in West Kelowna's Upper Glenrosa area Saturday morning
WKFR chief Jason Brolund says his crews are working alongside the province's wildfire crews at the end of Carre Road
"We will be working together today to contain and suppress the fire
which appears to be as a result of open burning piles that spread away from their original size," Brolund said
The fire burning in the Upper Glenrosa area Friday night was still considered "out of control" as of midnight
but it's not yet clear if crews continued fighting the fire through the night
According to the BC Wildfire Service's latest update

West Kelowna RCMP have opened a missing person investigation after someone was last seen in the area washed out by a landslide on Westside Road, on April 1
The slide washed out a portion of Westside Road between Main Street and Denison Road in the Reid Creek area on Tuesday April 1, at approximately 10:45 p.m
Following the landslide, RCMP were contacted anonymously and told that people experiencing homelessness were known to have been living in the area affected by the incident
a spokesperson for the Kelowna-based Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team (COSAR)
Following the alert and an initial search and verification by the RCMP
a team of 13 COSAR volunteers were dispatched and searched the area for seven hours
and a boat crew attended the scene along with members of the RCMP.
Henczel said that there was evidence of people who had been sheltering in the area
but it was unclear how recently those individuals had last been there.

Three of the six candidates running in the Okanagan Lake West—South Kelowna riding attended the Greater Westside Board of Trade all-candidates forum Wednesday evening
NDP candidate Harpreet Badohal and Liberal Party candidate Juliette Sicotte all answered a number of questions
which were posed by Board of trade president Bryan Fitzpatrick
The candidates were limited to one-minute answers to the questions
Albas criticized the governing Liberal Party's record on crime
He also said the federal government needs to hold the provinces to account when it comes to what's being done with federal mental healthcare funds
“Are we getting full value for [the] money
is the province doing its full job?” Albas said
Badohal repeatedly hit at Albas' Conservative Party
warning those in attendance that Harper-era “austerity measures” are not the answer for the problems of the future
Badohal was able to speak from experience when asked about his stance on transferring credentials from other countries for immigrants coming to Canada
said it took him six years to get into Canada in the early days of the Harper government
He had a masters degree in biology when he arrived from India
but was forced to work as a farm labourer and pizza delivery driver upon his arrival
He went on to receive another masters degree from UBC and now works as a registered occupational and environmental health professional
Sicotte and Badohal both spoke about their interest in light rail through the Central Okanagan as an answer to the congestion problems on local roads
And all three candidates talked a big game about standing up to the Americans in the form of reciprocal tariffs
with Sicotte advocating for “force against force” and Albas adding that diversifying Canada's trade will “show the Americans we don't need them.”
Placards were placed on the table at the forum for Louise Lecouffe of the Green Party
Debbie Robinson of the People’s Party and Gary Suddard of the Canadian Future Party but these candidates did not attend

This is a busy time of year for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC as they cover the province re-stocking lakes and ponds before the water temperature gets too warm
"We want to make B.C., the best freshwater fishery in North America," said Cameron Jope, a fish culturist with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC in Summerland
He and his colleagues released more than 400 rainbow trout into Shannon Lake on Wednesday
rear and eventually stock lakes with various types of trout
specifically rainbow trout is mostly what I work with," he explained
The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC was created in 2003 as North America's only private, non-profit fisheries service funded by licence revenues
"I'm growing these fish with the purpose of putting them in the lake
and then people can come out and enjoy these lakes and catch those fish," Jope says
Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC operates six hatcheries across the province
and teams are working to raise and release trout
kokanee and steelhead for recreational fisheries and white sturgeon for conservation purposes
they will release a little more than 2,000 rainbow trout in Shannon Lake alone
"Hall Road Pond and Shannon Lake are great because they're really accessible for families," said Jodi Mousseau
admin and outreach clerk for the Summerland Trout Hatchery
So it's a great place to introduce the kids to fishing."
If you're looking to introduce the young people in your life to fishing
from the second week of May until Father's Day on June 15
staff will be set up at Hall Road Pond and Shannon Lake on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m
Youth get a chance to borrow a rod and tackle and receive guidance as they cast their lines
"Hopefully catch one of the big fish that we put into the lake," Mousseau said
The fish released are sterile so they won't be able to reproduce or compete with any native fish
but that doesn't mean they don't get big
"Depending on the productivity of the lake
we can have trout that grow in excess of 10 pounds," Jope said
adding he loves to fish himself and eats the fish he catches out of Shannon Lake
"I can't wait for more days on the water this summer," he said

The City of West Kelowna is issuing a precautionary isolated Water Quality Advisory
effectively immediately and until further notice
due to an accidental contractor-related water main break
within the immediate area of the break are on a Boil Water Notice.
View a map here to confirm if your property is in the affected service area.
A water main break typically results in sediment entering the otherwise closed system
meaning untreated water can accidentally be delivered to homes
and with the possibility of bacteria and other microorganisms being present in the sediment in the water
a Water Quality Advisory and Boil Water Notice are recommended
3279 and 2373 Gates Road remain with limited to no water service until repairs can be completed
These specified properties will be on a precautionary Boil Water Notice
until consecutive tests results can confirm the quality of the water
A Boil Water Notice is required for these specific properties
as turbidity may be higher closer to the water main break
Please go to westkelownacity.ca/watermains for updates on service status while repairs are being conducted.
the City will conduct consecutive days of mandatory testing
before it can lift the Water Quality Advisory and Boil Water Notice for the affected zones.
The bulk filling station at Shannon Lake and Asquith Roads provides a safe
Customers can use the touch-free filling station free during the Water Quality Advisory
The tap is located on the Asquith Road side of the facility
precautionary water quality advisory will be in effect within this area while the work is underway and continuing until further notice
precautionary water quality advisory for that zone has now ended.
Flushing forces high-velocity water through hydrants to remove sediment that has accumulated in the distribution system’s mains over time. During this process, customers in Zone 1 of the Rose Valley Service Area (see map) may experience temporary water pressure reductions or discoloration
Any disruption should be brief and occur only while mains in the area are being flushed
To see the Zone 1 map and learn about recommended steps customers should take before, during and after flushing in your area, please visit westkelownacity.ca/flushing
As the watermain flushing progresses, those living in Zone 1 will be on an isolated, precautionary Water Quality Advisory. This advisory does not apply outside Zone 1 as it relates only to the flushing activity occurring within that particular area. For Water Quality Advisory information, please visit Interior Health’s Drinking Water Resources For Everyone webpage
the City is also providing residents with an alternative source of potable drinking water at the bulk filling station at Shannon Lake and Asquith Roads
The annual maintenance program is continuing as planned
We appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding during this essential maintenance
How will you know if flushing is happening in your area
Flushing helps remove accumulated sediment
which has settled in our distribution pipes and mains over time and can be stirred up through high flows and velocities
This is expected for a water system of this age
which had no water treatment plant for decades
Due to the potential for settled manganese in our mains to be stirred up from planned watermain flushing
we recommend that parents with infants in the Rose Valley Water Service Area not use tap water to reconstitute formula while watermain flushing is occurring within their zone
Where can I learn more about the watermain flushing program
The annual watermain flushing is a best practices utility maintenance program
