French and Dutch scientists ran genetic tests on the worldâs most beloved flower to find its first ancestor
bringing the delightful rose into the sunlight fresh for the spring
a team from Beijing Forestry University analyzed 707 genera in 215 domesticated and wild rose samples to conduct a thorough survey of the worldâs beloved flower to advance breeding practices in the age of climate change
After an extensive investigation of cultivated and wild roses
the research team found a simpler version of the multi-petaled and even mini roses that decorate florist shops and tables
The exquisite rose has evolved into many colors
people have regarded the rose as a symbol of beauty
its history spans even further back: 30 million years
studies hadnât confirmed where they had originated or what the first rose looked like
researchers from Beijing Forestry University have been reaching into the genes
and analyzing recorded species and their evolution to construct an evolutionary tree of the family
Though scientists thought that China first cultivated roses in imperial gardens as described by Confucius
the study confirmed that what “Confucius says” was indeed true
Many popular varieties today are hybrids with Chinese species
South Morning China Post reports that the rose entered a new phase in its illustrious career in the late eighteenth century
Engineered with Chinese and European cultivars to display a wider variety of attractive traits like fragrance
scientists traced the origins of the modern cultivated rose to eight to ten species
The researchers continued that the genetic composition of cultivated roses originated almost entirely from two groups within the genus
two regions of rose diversity were identified: the northwest and southwest
Smaller yellow species and white fragrant flowers were found in these regions
There are over 35,000 rose cultivars, demonstrating the star power of the aptly named âqueen of the flowers.â Researchers were able to trace all those variations back to one single source
âAncestral trait construction showed that the common ancestor of Rosa most likely showed single-petal flowers with yellow color and seven leaflets,â the team explained via South Morning China Post
In hopes of revolutionizing breeding practice, the mathematical formula involving wild and cultivated roses has limited any recent breakthroughs. The paper âlays a solid foundation for future re-domestication and innovative breeding efforts using wild resources.â
climate change is changing breeding practices
as the cultivated species needs genetic support

REAL Housewives of Salt Lake Cityâs Whitney Rose has shut down her beauty line and lost a âfortuneâ in the process
After Wild Rose Beauty shuttered its doors
it has quietly been transitioned into a new company that the reality star launched last year on the down low - but has still not posted about
RHOSLC fans watched on season 2 as Whitney
The clean skincare line was a rebranding of another former company Whitney was at the helm of
making this the third time in four years that she has changed up her beauty business
According to an insider close to the Bravo-lebrity: "Whitney shut down Wild Rose Beauty last year basically without telling anyone or announcing anything official
The loss was well into the six-figure range
especially since they had just rebranded Wild Rose Beauty
which they initially invested a lot of money into."Â Â
none of the products are available to purchase as they are all labeled âsold out.âÂ
the beauty brandâs Facebook account has been deactivated
and its Instagram page hasnât posted since 2024
Sun can confirm that Wild Rose Beauty has quietly rebranded to SĆl People - another business that Whitney has recently become a part of
Wild Rose Beauty products can be found on the SĆl People website while still in its original packaging, so new labels for the skincare items have not yet been produced.Â
Whitney has not posted about the new career move on her social media pages
the mom-of-two hasnât been public about her latest rebrand because âquite frankly
"There's still a lot she's figuring out and on top of that
âThereâs a lot of financial problems at play for it to even be an official rebrand
Sun has reached out to the company for comment
Whitney responded to reports about Wild Rose Beauty no longer operating
saying the line is "not done" - but confirmed it's not currently selling products
though they will be available again "soon."
"I am no longer a part of SĆl People for the record," she added
While Whitney hasnât posted about her role with SĆl People on her own social media pages
the company released a press release last year alongside her co-founder
The release mentions that Wild Rose Beauty will now be sold âexclusively at SĆl People.â
They also explained the brand's mission of creating products that aim to âalign mind
SĆl People will feature a range of wellness products and digital courses to help harmonize the mind
a powerful nootropic supplement for brain health
a beauty-enhancing ceramide drink clinically proven to improve skin
the company will prelaunch with three digital courses covering self-love
Whitney gushed: "Becoming a co-founder and co-CEO of SĆl People is truly a dream realized
âIâve been involved in one way or another with the direct selling industry for most of my life
and now I get to take that one step further
envisions a future where our company stands as a beacon of self-love and transformation
âThe commitment to fostering self-celebration and growth aligns with values I hold most close to my heart
and just like our company name represents the sun
Whitney revealed that she and husband Justin Rose invested over $300,000 of their money into the Wild Rose Beauty rebranding and reportedly took out a $1m loan
there is currently 10 versions of the Real Housewives
She confessed on the RHOSLC After Show that she "lost our entire savingsâ with the financial decision
âThose are the things that are make or break a relationship
The only things people fight over are usually money and sex
those are the things that people get divorced over
it was very difficult because I felt ashamed
and I just really wanted him to know that despite all the losses
and we're gonna turn those into returns,â she said in 2022
Season 6 of RHOSLC is currently in production and is expected to air on Bravo in late 2025
Fan-favorite Angie Katsanevas will also return, along with newcomers Bronwyn Newport and Britani Bateman

âFrom treating beloved pets to caring for wildlife
Wild Rose Vets opens the world of veterinary medicine
showcasing the dedication of these veterinarians to keeping animals healthy and happy,â APTN said in a news release
telling her that her name had come up in discussions of Indigenous women working in veterinary medicine who might be a good fit for their new show
but had âevery intention of telling them âno thank you,â â she said

doting on the family dogs and cats as well has her grandparentsâ horses
she knew she would grow up to be a veterinarian
âI always came to all the vet visits with my family
Martin Lovo) was really lovely and allowed me to come in and volunteer at the age of 14,â she recalled
âI loved seeing how he interacted with people
that he really listened to what their concerns were and tried to come up with solutions that would help
Hay thought Wild Rose Vets could be an opportunity to share a version of that formative experience with others and help bring a new generation of animal lovers into the world of veterinary medicine
especially about how the presence of a documentary crew might affect staff and patients at the clinic
the response was instantly and overwhelmingly enthusiastic
âMy family and friends and all of my colleagues and teammates at Forest Grove have had nothing but really positive feedback,â she said
a lot of people enjoy seeing themselves on TV and watching how theyâre portrayed
Itâs weird to show up to work and have a microphone taped onto you
and to be thinking about batteries during the workday
Itâs weird to have a camera following you around
they did such a good job of blending into the background and the flow of the practice
and I was shocked at how many of our clients were stoked to share their story and show off their pets and how much they love them
Wild Rose Vets has been full of learning experiences: From little things like seeing what her âIâm nervous and Iâm thinking about whatâs going onâ expression looks like on TV
to profound new ways of connecting with her own Indigenous heritage
a small community in the Yukon north of the Arctic Circle
but Hay never had the opportunity to be immersed in that culture
so she was adopted into a white family â a really wonderful
âBut it cut a big link to that cultural aspect
âMy heritage is something that Iâve always felt very drawn to and wanted to learn more about
but I wasnât sure how to do it in a respectful way
but she was encouraged to look for ways to participate in the Indigenous culture and traditions in Saskatoon
learned beadwork from a colleague at the vet clinic
and discovered that embracing Indigenous culture more empowering than intimidating
and not be ashamed that I donât know a lot about my culture; itâs OK for me to want to learn more
⊠I really love and appreciate the stories and experiences people have shared
Hay said she knows her story is not unique; many young people with Indigenous heritage share the same worries and fears she carried around about whether it would be OK to go and learn more about their culture and community
and whether they would be welcome in those spaces
If she had seen a show like Wild Rose Vets when she was growing up
it would have told her something she needed to hear
this is a show that I absolutely would have been in love with
I would have been a big fan of watching a bunch of vets working with animals
I donât know if I would have picked up on the Indigenous culture at the time
but I would have loved seeing all the stories of the human-animal connection and all the different ways it can be expressed
I think I would have found it empowering to know that the person on TV had a similar background to me â they werenât raised in that culture
but theyâre wanting to learn more; theyâre taking a jigging class and learning beading and going to a powwow
And theyâre being openly accepted and encouraged to do so
âI think that would have empowered me to start that journey for myself

Wild Rose Retirement Residence â Optima Living
Optima is trying to break our solidarity and pit us against each other
Optima wants General Support Services staff to get raises that are only half as much as the Nursing Care staff
They think paying AUPE members a living wage of $20.85 per hour is unreasonable
we think it is unreasonable that Optima makes huge profits by increasing resident fees while refusing to pay us living wages
We all respect each other and believe in solidarity
We know General Support Services are a vital part of providing quality care for seniors
and Nursing Care members refuse to leave support staff behind
They also rejected our proposals to protect us from inflation by adding an automatic Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for our wages
The employer also said it would be a âhard noâ to our proposal of a âme tooâ agreement
Not only should our wages match health care industry standards
but we also deserve to be protected against inflation in these uncertain times
By rejecting a âme tooâ agreement the employer is essentially saying our work is somehow less valuable than our fellow AUPE members employed by AHS

A Central Alberta school division is laying off about 50 educational assistants due to funding uncertainties for Indigenous students
which has schools in the Rocky Mountain House area
said staff will be laid off as of Dec
20 because of ongoing issues with Jordanâs Principle
a federal program to give Indigenous children timely access to services and supports they need.
The division said historically grants were approved at the regional level
but this yearâs funding approval process has changed and been delayed at the federal level
âDespite our unwavering commitment to supporting students
Wild Rose School Division is not in a financial position to sustain these services without the necessary funding
By the end of December we will have already invested approximately $750,000 to maintain these critical supports for Indigenous students and families," said the division
âThe ongoing delay in funding approval places these vital supports at significant risk
affecting the well-being and educational outcomes of the students we serve
we are not alone in facing these challenges; several school divisions and organizations across Canada are experiencing similar delays.â
In November, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ordered Canada to address the backlog of requests under Jordan's Principle
Jordan's Principle is a legal rule that stipulates that when a First Nations child needs health
social or educational services they are to receive them from the government first approached
with questions about final jurisdiction worked out afterwards
The tribunal ordered Canada to identify the number of backlogged cases under that rule and return to it with a detailed plan to address them by Dec
Canada told the tribunal the proposed timeline to address the backlog of some 140,000 cases was "not operationally feasible" and could impact the delivery of services to First Nations children and families
It also identified 25,891 are labelled as urgent
The division said its board of trustees will continue to advocate for the funding and encouraged the public to do the same.
The Alberta government said it is not involved in Jordanâs Principle applications
nor a party to the funding agreements between Indigenous Services Canada and funding recipients which include school authorities across the province
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said Alberta remains committed to supporting indigenous student success
we are providing $86 million to school authorities so they can implement recommendations of the truth and reconciliation commissions
and instructional supports that improve outcomes for First Nations
Métis and Inuit students," said Nicolaides in a statement.
we are investing $1.2 billion to support school authorities in hiring more than 3,000 teachers
EAs and other educational support staff over the next three years
We are also investing $1.5 billion this school year to support students specialized learning needs
School authorities can use this funding to hire additional educational support staff such as EAâs

When the producers of the APTN series Wild Rose Vets first approached Dr
Emma Jackson about participating in the show
Article contentThe team had a good track record
a Métis veterinarian based in rural Alberta
Wild Rose Vets is a spin-off of that series
with producers widening the lens to focus on three separate vets in Western Canada
not long after she graduated from the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
âItâs a very vulnerable position to be in and itâs very vulnerable to watch it,â she says
I think that was a little bit of fear that I had.â
Your weekday lunchtime roundup of curated links

Still, the producers were persistent and, after a few months, Jackson changed her mind. Born and raised in St. Paul, she went to school in the Saddle Lake Cree Nation and eventually saw Wild Rose Vets as an opportunity.
âThe main reason was that I wanted to showcase primarily to Indigenous youth that there are veterinarians who look like them, who are from reserves, who went to school on reserves who can go into veterinary medicine and become veterinarians themselves,â she says.
Jackson had some conditions. She wanted her segments to focus specifically on the work she did at the Calgary animal shelter run by the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society, or AARCS, on her days off from working full-time at an emergency animal hospital.
Jackson has reviewed certain scenes in the series to make sure the medical content was accurate but, at the time of this interview, she had not watched a full episode other than the first one focusing on Hay and Stephen.
While the series is meant to focus on positive Indigenous stories, Jackson says some scenes were filmed that she hopes donât end up on the cutting-room floor, even if they are darker in tone.
Jackson credits growing up on a farm for sparking her interest in animals and veterinary medicine.
âThere wasnât as much socialization aspects if you grew up on a farm or a reserve because there are limitations of not being able to drive somewhere,â she says. âThere were always cats and dogs and horses around to interact with and developing the human-animal bond in that capacity was really important. I think thatâs where it came from and I think it just stuck with me, always wanting that capacity to help and give a voice for those who donât have a voice.â
Jackson says she did have a career-altering moment when shooting. In episode 10, she travels to the remote Indigenous community of Ahousaht, a settlement on Flores Island, B.C., that is only accessible by water or air. Volunteering with the Mission PAWSible mobile vet unit, she spent a week in the community. She said the experience has convinced her to focus less on emergency medicine and more on improving access to veterinary care in remote areas.

The collar and trim boasts a tasteful sharing of white with segmented green and red stripes to complete a clean sashed look:
Following the club’s playoff championship win in front of a sold-out ATCO Field in November
this year’s kits will feature a gold legacy patch on the back neckline to signify Cavalry’s status as the 2024 CPL champions
With the club set for just its second-ever Concacaf Champions Cup entry this month
a limited number of Concacaf Patches have been made available to purchase as well and can be affixed to the kit prior to delivery
Fans interested in purchasing the Cavalry 2025 primary kit can do so here
The kit release makes Cavalry the first club to release new club threads for 2025. They kicked off jersey launches last season too with the Aurora Borealis and Innovation City looks

EdinburghA Glasgow country-singing ex-con single mother dreams of the big time in Nicole Taylorâs new musical
To sing country songs on Nashvilleâs Grand Ole Opry stage
In this fast-moving, heart-grabbing new musical by Nicole Taylor, directed by John Tiffany
we follow Rose-Lynn â a star performance from Dawn Sievewright â as she stumbles
sings and fights her way along the path to self-realisation
backed all the way by a mood-shifting eight-piece band country-kaleidoscoping from rockinâ rhythms to hushed ballads under Ali Roocroftâs toe-tapping direction
Taylorâs storyline, based on her award-winning 2018 film starring Jessie Buckley
highlighted in the lyrics of the climactic closing number: âAinât no yellow brick road/ Running through Glasgow⊠Ainât no place like home.â
In overcoming obstacles of self-doubt and social deprivation
Rose-Lynn is fairy-godmothered by her art school-trained
bored housewife employer (pitched perfectly by Janet Kumah) and enlightened by an invisible presence (real-life DJ
plot improbabilities require us to do more that merely suspend disbelief: we have to eradicate it from our consciousness
What makes us want to do this is an involving emotional through line
Rose-Lynnâs evolving relations with her three companions â mother (played by Blythe Duff) and children (Lily Ferguson and Alfie Campbell) â are touchingly credible
particular situation nevertheless connects to anyone who has ever felt torn between family and career
The gradual shift from fracture towards healing begins with their soul-stretching rendering of Peace in this House (who knew Duff could sing like that?)
tempo and location are executed with the brio of a Texas two-step thanks to an excellent creative team and Tiffanyâs clear-sighted direction
the mega-watt Rose-Lynn commands the stage without dominating an impressive ensemble in which every actor/singer and musician shines
Wild Rose is at the Royal Lyceum
The creator of Wild Rose is Nicole Taylor not Nicola Taylor
as an earlier version stated due to an editing error
This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025
The Observer is now owned and operated by Tortoise Media
this vibrant show has plenty of joyful foot-stomping
with a star who gives us the raw fragility behind the fanfare
The most affecting moments in this big-hearted musical come when tough talking gives way to tenderness
Wittily adapted by Nicole Taylor from her 2018 film of the same name and staged with elan by John Tiffany
it is the story of ex-con Rose-Lynn Harlan as she tries to reconcile the need to care for her children with her ambitions to make it as a singer
Believing no country star ever came out of Glasgow
This is all the excuse choreographers Steven Hoggett and Vicki Manderson need to stage exuberant line dances
propelled by Ali Roocroftâs jolly eight-piece band sitting across the back of the open set by Chloe Lamford
as is the class-based comedy provided by the hard-up singer who uses âShazam for bathroomsâ to identify the price of fancy floor tiles and the appeal court judge who is surprisingly well versed in country musicâs origins in Irish/Scots folk
this is also a show about inequality of opportunity

Photograph: Mihaela BodlovicBut what strikes deep is the scenes of fragility
It is when Rose-Lynn (Dawn Sievewright) quietly articulates why country music means so much to her: âThree chords and the truth.â It is in the delay before she finds a way to sing with her children (on my night
And it is when mother Marion (Blythe Duff) stands alone and vulnerable for a second-half solo
Sievewright is a star in the most unstarry way
she captures Rose-Lynnâs charm and streetwise patter as well as her defensiveness and fear
she retains an air of modesty even while singing
the ending does not quite deliver the feelgood bounce you crave â but

If youâve been to Capitol Hillâs Wildrose bar in the past two decades
The mayor of Seattle out there,â said Martha Manning
who has co-owned the legendary lesbian bar â one of the oldest lesbian bars in the country and the only one left in Seattle â with Brothers since 2003
âShe knew all of the dogâs names in the neighborhood and even some of their ownerâs names.â
Brothers died unexpectedly Sunday evening in a Seattle hospital while surrounded by loved ones
but “although she had been battling stuff
she was doing very well and this was sudden,” Manning said
âShe was only 5 feet tall,â Larry Brothers said of his younger sister
âbut she had an engineerâs brain and could drive you crazy with details.â
While there were other lesbian bars in Seattle when the Wildrose opened in 1985
Brothers has helped the Rose survive and thrive
becoming more than a bar for Seattleâs lesbian and larger queer community
Itâs a place to drink and chat â but also a place where couples meet and where they break up
âShelley recognized a person in trouble and instead of turning around and walking away
she walked toward them,â Larry Brothers said
Shelley Brothers was the youngest of three children
said their small-town childhood was filled with sports and neighborhood kids
always in the thick of things when her two brothers were playing football and basketball in the familyâs large yard
âShe was the baby and her brothers were bigger than life as kids,â Manning said
âI think she felt like she was in their shadows (growing up)
Shelley Brothers became interested in theater and how things came together backstage
She got a job working at a local dinner theater during the summers
then worked set construction and sound jobs for years on and off as she moved west
living in California and Nevada before settling in Seattle in 1992
Shortly after moving to Seattle from Carson City
Brothers first stepped into the bar that would become her life: the Wildrose
She got kicked out on that first visit.
Brothers was told vehemently that the bar was a tavern
I donât know the liquor laws in Washington yet,â Brothers told The Seattle Times last year
âGet out!,â so I left.â Returning the next day
no one âeven acted like they threw me out.â
Brothers was later hired to do sound at events and work security part time (keeping another job working with sensors at Eaton)
and she and Manning bought into ownership in the early 2000s.
She had a hand in the inner workings of anything sound-related â like making sure everything was working properly the night that Ellen DeGeneres came out on her show âEllenâ in 1997
becoming the first openly lesbian lead character on an American network TV show
Brothers would often work the door as security
or just check in with patrons around the bar
âAnything mechanical was her purview; she was always tinkering with things,â Manning said
Larry Brothers said his sister worked by the book; âThere was no sneaking people in underage
no tolerating misbehavior or evil behavior and no dope dealers.â At the same time
Shelley was also someone who was there âfor everyone.â She believed in giving second chances and hearing people out
especially those who had been cast out or cast aside
there were already three people staying with Shelley
âShe always had people staying with her,â Larry said
âShe and Martha were always offering safety and safe harbor for women.â
Brothers and Manning became known for that commitment to community and to ensuring the Wildrose remained a place where anyone could find sanctuary
âWe joked that weâre kind of a community center,â Manning said
And the bar has taken its lumps since the duo took over in the early 2000s
They saw dips in patronage as the city grew and changed around them; first
and again when online dating apps began to replace bars as a natural meeting place for singles
When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020 and bars and restaurants closed or moved to takeout-only models
Brothers and Manning worried the bar wouldnât survive
Larry Brothers had been trying to persuade his sister to host an online fundraiser for a few years leading up to COVID
but Shelley was convinced she and Manning should be able to take care of their own bar
look: You have thousands of people who want to take care of you,â Larry said
âYou have to let the people who love you do things for you
The Wildrose owners launched a GoFundMe to make ends meet
eventually raising nearly $90,000 for the bar
âWe had years of struggling with our own drive for the place
and it gave us both a bump and the hope that people wanted us to be around,â Manning said
âThat outpouring of support meant so much to her.â
The Wildrose was the place to go when drag queen BenDeLaCreme moved to Seattle from Chicago in 2007
âItâs really important as one of the last remaining lesbian bars and historic,â BenDeLaCreme said Tuesday
and Shelley and Martha really cultivated something that felt very comfortable.â
BenDeLaCreme eventually worked at Wildrose as a bartender and used the âpostage-stamp-sized stageâ for performances
falling in love with the bar and with Shelley and Martha
Martha with her quiet humor and Shelley with her âhuge
âYou couldnât walk past the Wildrose if you knew Shelley because she was always out front and would spot you from two blocks away,â BenDeLaCreme said
âI can picture it now; I would be across the street walking past Lifelong Thrift and Iâd hear her voice yelling to me ⊠I have so many incredible imprinted memories there.â
longtime KEXP DJ Riz Rollins said on social media that âthere are great people
but there are people who managed to stand above the rest,â writing that âShelley was one of them.â
âI never ever felt less than welcome at âthe Rose,â EVER
I was humbled to be included in their Pride celebrations
but I also felt that I was in danger of taking space where I didnât belong,â Rollins wrote
â(Shelley) told me I was also in community there
and she wouldnât think of celebrating Pride without me
She told me that she didnât have many more Prides left
Although she had stepped back a bit from daily duties at the bar
meeting friends for lunch or dinner and taking care of people
loved animals and it was absolutely reciprocated,â Manning said
She just had this love for life and friendships
⊠We were really lucky to have her as our family.â
A celebration of Brothersâ life will be held at the Wildrose on Capitol Hill from 2 to 9 p.m

Brooklyn hardcore/post-hardcore trio Memory Entry have announce the release of the group's debut EP
on March 14th through Iodine Recordings/Mind Over Matter Records
Pre-order Our World In Going To Disappear here.
Memory Entry have release the second preview
Guitarist Keith Montgomery shared the following:
as we were all busy with other bands and creative endeavors
We couldn't decide on a name or a direction and that only slowed things down further
I kept having these recurring dreams every night
The same places; the same people; some familiar and some new
mistakes I had made and opportunities I had squandered
I wondered if all of my best days were behind me
I was inspired by several pieces of art I was taking in at the time that coincided with what I had been experiencing at night
and this opened up the idea of the dream world
It felt like there was work to be done â but it couldn't all be done in our physical world
There was more to discover in this other world
It was then that Memory Entry settled on a name and the EP came together quickly after
The story of Our World Is Going To Disappear is the story of the band
Starting out simply and lamenting everyday heartbreak
experimenting with different sounds and vocalizations
getting to know each other and realizing that there's much more out there to discover

The world premiere of Nicole Taylorâs new musical Wild Rose opens at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh next month
We spoke to Janet Kumah who plays Susannah in this brand-new musical
For people who may not have previously seen the film
Wild Rose is about a woman who believes she has to leave behind everything she knows
she discovers that home isnât something out there in the world; itâs something she carries within her
What makes this story the perfect one to transfer to the stage
and they seem to connect with your soul in an unexplainable way
The story itself is intimate but universal: the journey of finding yourself
confronting obstacles outside of your control and letting go of what you thought your life should be to discover what actually makes you happy
What has your process of finding the stage version of Susannah been
laugh out loud moments that speak to the kind of rehearsal room we have - warm
There was a lot to discover about Susannah
and it all started with Nicoleâs [Taylor] beautiful script
There are subtle pointers to Susannahâs beat
her rhythm and then thereâs the space to play
Trial and error has been invaluable as weâve deep-dived into her journey
why their paths have crossed at this moment in their lives
and that path of learning has been encouraged by John [Tiffany - Director] and has been quite integral to finding Susannah on stage
And then thereâs Sarah [Travis] and Daveyâs [Anderson] musical arrangements
which capture the internal emotions that are part of Susannahâs journey - things she might not say outright but that sit in the music in the way it holds her
Why is the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh a good place for Wild Rose to start its journey as a stage musical
and the dreams that pull her from Glasgow to Nashville
The cultural tones woven throughout give it a unique sense of place and identity
It feels right to be grounding the show here
This is one of your first ventures into the world of musical theatre
How are you finding working on a musical in comparison to working on straight plays
I have done some work in musical theatre but the process of working on this show has been very holistic in bringing acting
really listening to ourselves as individuals
or breath-work all led by Steven [Hoggett] and Vicki [Manderson]
who create such a brilliant space to tune in and connect
The movement in this show is fluid; itâs instinctual storytelling
Itâs been a deeply collaborative process rooted in truth
What are your favourite songs that feature in the show
Iâve hummed âGet Out of This Townâ in the kitchen
and en-route to and from work quite a few times
sung beautifully by Dawn [Sievewright playing Rose-Lynn] thatâs brought a tear or two to my eyes
really cleverly choreographed as part of a hilarious scene
Why should audiences come to see the world premiere of Wild Rose in Edinburgh
performed by an extraordinary ensemble of performers
and the entire creative and production team have done such a stunning job of bringing this story to life on stage; the music
itâs all woven together in a way that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable
I think people will leave the theatre still feeling the songs in their bones
maybe even Googling them on the way home if they didnât already know them
and we get to use them to tell this stunning story of self discovery
Wild Rose plays at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh from 6 March-19 April, with further info here.

On Sunday in historic downtown Duluth at the Norway Hall Event Center
guests were invited to immerse themselves in a wedding event unlike any other
Wild Rose Company hosted the Northland’s very first mock wedding
an event that put its 13 vendors at the forefront of the conversation
why don’t we bring couples in that want to see what it feels like,â said Amber Brostrom
The staged wedding’s vendors decorated the Norway Hall Event Center like they would a traditional wedding
showcasing their skills for potential couples to experience firsthand
âAs humans it’s hard for us to be real visual and you want to use all of your five senses so your touch
And to be able to sit down with your significant other and kind of have a time to yourself is really helpful to help them make sure that they made the right decision because it’s a very important day in their life,â said Brostrom
The event gave its guests a chance to envision themselves as if they were the ones walking down the aisle on their special day
along with providing clear visuals for couples looking to tie the knot
and Sounds Unlimited Entertainment all participated in the mock wedding

Claudia Schmidt Serves Up Her Heartfelt Songs on the Wild Rose Moon Radio HourOn Air: Monday February 3rd at 7:00 PM EST on 88.1 WVPE
Legendary performer Claudia Schmidt began her Wild Rose Moon Radio Hour performance by recounting a story and songâ âVeil of Sorrow.â She had shared the performance at a celebration of life for her mentor and friend
Frank Galati (Award-winning Chicago writer
âItâs a song that felt very old to meâwhen it came in.â
In the conversation that follows with host George Schricker
she discusses her first experiences in the 1970s with Bob Gibson â a friend and mentor during her early days in Chicago
I was unaware at the time about his background.â (Bob helped to develop the folk music revival in the 1950s and early 1960s) âThen one night at the Earl of Old Towne
Segueing into the song âHypatia of Alexandria,â she explains
âI was reading this bookââFlow Down Like Silverâ by Ki Longfellow and was just astounded
I was so inspired I just had to write a song about her.â
No longer forgotten or killed for your genius
Gary songwriter Patti Shaffner performs her song
the tongue-in-cheek âSink or Swim.â Accompanied by Nathan Waddill on bass and Sean Hoffman on fiddle
the song sizzles along with Patti scatting along and then breaking out into a cool groove.â
Theyâll throw you in the water and watch you drown
The âShoot the Moonâ game show follows with contestants Mary Jo Finley (Plymouth) and Fred Waldschmidt (Illinois) competing for prizes while answering questions about Claudia Schmidtâs biography
they answer questions related to Beaver Island Cuisine
âBroken Glass,â and her work composing music for a Bertolt Brecht play
Claudia sings a revised version of her signature early song
âBroken Glass.â Eschewing the original rhythm
âThis is a song I wrote when I was young; I hardly understood when I wrote it
Thatâs the beauty of getting to sing these songs over and over as they keep revealing new truths
That the air around you soothes you like a holy balm
That your lonely anger hasnât turned your insides inside out
That you found a place some of us still dream about
Claudia discusses her relationship with singing and songwriting as of service â a way of making the world more hospitable and harmonious
She closes with a song sung in solidarity with much of the aging audience who has come to see her: âIâve always had a hard time sleeping my entire life
Weâre told that sleep is so essential as we get older
So I wrote this song about sleeping called âLullaby for Grownups.â
Claudia sings about different body parts that need rest
recognizing how each part contributes to our lives and needs rest
we hope you will all go get some good sleep
