I really love and appreciate the stories and experiences people have shared Hay said she knows her story is not unique; many young people with Indigenous heritage share the same worries and fears she carried around about whether it would be OK to go and learn more about their culture and community and whether they would be welcome in those spaces If she had seen a show like Wild Rose Vets when she was growing up it would have told her something she needed to hear this is a show that I absolutely would have been in love with I would have been a big fan of watching a bunch of vets working with animals I don’t know if I would have picked up on the Indigenous culture at the time but I would have loved seeing all the stories of the human-animal connection and all the different ways it can be expressed I think I would have found it empowering to know that the person on TV had a similar background to me — they weren’t raised in that culture but they’re wanting to learn more; they’re taking a jigging class and learning beading and going to a powwow And they’re being openly accepted and encouraged to do so “I think that would have empowered me to start that journey for myself This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic. which has schools in the Rocky Mountain House area said staff will be laid off as of Dec 20 because of ongoing issues with Jordan’s Principle a federal program to give Indigenous children timely access to services and supports they need.  The division said historically grants were approved at the regional level but this year’s funding approval process has changed and been delayed at the federal level “Despite our unwavering commitment to supporting students Wild Rose School Division is not in a financial position to sustain these services without the necessary funding By the end of December we will have already invested approximately $750,000 to maintain these critical supports for Indigenous students and families," said the division “The ongoing delay in funding approval places these vital supports at significant risk affecting the well-being and educational outcomes of the students we serve we are not alone in facing these challenges; several school divisions and organizations across Canada are experiencing similar delays.” In November, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ordered Canada to address the backlog of requests under Jordan's Principle Jordan's Principle is a legal rule that stipulates that when a First Nations child needs health social or educational services they are to receive them from the government first approached with questions about final jurisdiction worked out afterwards The tribunal ordered Canada to identify the number of backlogged cases under that rule and return to it with a detailed plan to address them by Dec Canada told the tribunal the proposed timeline to address the backlog of some 140,000 cases was "not operationally feasible" and could impact the delivery of services to First Nations children and families It also identified 25,891 are labelled as urgent The division said its board of trustees will continue to advocate for the funding and encouraged the public to do the same.  The Alberta government said it is not involved in Jordan’s Principle applications nor a party to the funding agreements between Indigenous Services Canada and funding recipients which include school authorities across the province Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said Alberta remains committed to supporting indigenous student success we are providing $86 million to school authorities so they can implement recommendations of the truth and reconciliation commissions and instructional supports that improve outcomes for First Nations MĂ©tis and Inuit students," said Nicolaides in a statement.  we are investing $1.2 billion to support school authorities in hiring more than 3,000 teachers EAs and other educational support staff over the next three years We are also investing $1.5 billion this school year to support students specialized learning needs School authorities can use this funding to hire additional educational support staff such as EA’s Dialogue and debate are integral to a free Born and raised in St. Paul, she went to school in the Saddle Lake Cree Nation and eventually saw Wild Rose Vets as an opportunity. “The main reason was that I wanted to showcase primarily to Indigenous youth that there are veterinarians who look like them, who are from reserves, who went to school on reserves who can go into veterinary medicine and become veterinarians themselves,” she says. Jackson had some conditions. She wanted her segments to focus specifically on the work she did at the Calgary animal shelter run by the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society, or AARCS, on her days off from working full-time at an emergency animal hospital. Jackson has reviewed certain scenes in the series to make sure the medical content was accurate but, at the time of this interview, she had not watched a full episode other than the first one focusing on Hay and Stephen. While the series is meant to focus on positive Indigenous stories, Jackson says some scenes were filmed that she hopes don’t end up on the cutting-room floor, even if they are darker in tone. Jackson credits growing up on a farm for sparking her interest in animals and veterinary medicine. “There wasn’t as much socialization aspects if you grew up on a farm or a reserve because there are limitations of not being able to drive somewhere,” she says. “There were always cats and dogs and horses around to interact with and developing the human-animal bond in that capacity was really important. I think that’s where it came from and I think it just stuck with me, always wanting that capacity to help and give a voice for those who don’t have a voice.” Jackson says she did have a career-altering moment when shooting. In episode 10, she travels to the remote Indigenous community of Ahousaht, a settlement on Flores Island, B.C., that is only accessible by water or air. Volunteering with the Mission PAWSible mobile vet unit, she spent a week in the community. She said the experience has convinced her to focus less on emergency medicine and more on improving access to veterinary care in remote areas. come when tough talking gives way to tenderness Wittily adapted by Nicole Taylor from her 2018 film of the same name and staged with elan by John Tiffany it is the story of ex-con Rose-Lynn Harlan as she tries to reconcile the need to care for her children with her ambitions to make it as a singer Believing no country star ever came out of Glasgow This is all the excuse choreographers Steven Hoggett and Vicki Manderson need to stage exuberant line dances propelled by Ali Roocroft’s jolly eight-piece band sitting across the back of the open set by Chloe Lamford as is the class-based comedy provided by the hard-up singer who uses “Shazam for bathrooms” to identify the price of fancy floor tiles and the appeal court judge who is surprisingly well versed in country music’s origins in Irish/Scots folk this is also a show about inequality of opportunity Dawn Sievewright (centre) in Wild Rose Photograph: Mihaela BodlovicBut what strikes deep is the scenes of fragility It is when Rose-Lynn (Dawn Sievewright) quietly articulates why country music means so much to her: “Three chords and the truth.” It is in the delay before she finds a way to sing with her children (on my night And it is when mother Marion (Blythe Duff) stands alone and vulnerable for a second-half solo Sievewright is a star in the most unstarry way she captures Rose-Lynn’s charm and streetwise patter as well as her defensiveness and fear she retains an air of modesty even while singing the ending does not quite deliver the feelgood bounce you crave – but At the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh Contact: Joan she was always tinkering with things,” Manning said Larry Brothers said his sister worked by the book; “There was no sneaking people in underage no tolerating misbehavior or evil behavior and no dope dealers.” At the same time Shelley was also someone who was there “for everyone.” She believed in giving second chances and hearing people out especially those who had been cast out or cast aside there were already three people staying with Shelley “She always had people staying with her,” Larry said “She and Martha were always offering safety and safe harbor for women.”  Brothers and Manning became known for that commitment to community and to ensuring the Wildrose remained a place where anyone could find sanctuary “We joked that we’re kind of a community center,” Manning said And the bar has taken its lumps since the duo took over in the early 2000s They saw dips in patronage as the city grew and changed around them; first and again when online dating apps began to replace bars as a natural meeting place for singles When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020 and bars and restaurants closed or moved to takeout-only models Brothers and Manning worried the bar wouldn’t survive Larry Brothers had been trying to persuade his sister to host an online fundraiser for a few years leading up to COVID but Shelley was convinced she and Manning should be able to take care of their own bar look: You have thousands of people who want to take care of you,” Larry said “You have to let the people who love you do things for you The Wildrose owners launched a GoFundMe to make ends meet eventually raising nearly $90,000 for the bar “We had years of struggling with our own drive for the place and it gave us both a bump and the hope that people wanted us to be around,” Manning said “That outpouring of support meant so much to her.” The Wildrose was the place to go when drag queen BenDeLaCreme moved to Seattle from Chicago in 2007 “It’s really important as one of the last remaining lesbian bars and historic,” BenDeLaCreme said Tuesday and Shelley and Martha really cultivated something that felt very comfortable.”  BenDeLaCreme eventually worked at Wildrose as a bartender and used the “postage-stamp-sized stage” for performances falling in love with the bar and with Shelley and Martha Martha with her quiet humor and Shelley with her “huge “You couldn’t walk past the Wildrose if you knew Shelley because she was always out front and would spot you from two blocks away,” BenDeLaCreme said “I can picture it now; I would be across the street walking past Lifelong Thrift and I’d hear her voice yelling to me
I have so many incredible imprinted memories there.”  longtime KEXP DJ Riz Rollins said on social media that “there are great people but there are people who managed to stand above the rest,” writing that “Shelley was one of them.”  “I never ever felt less than welcome at ‘the Rose,’ EVER I was humbled to be included in their Pride celebrations but I also felt that I was in danger of taking space where I didn’t belong,” Rollins wrote “(Shelley) told me I was also in community there and she wouldn’t think of celebrating Pride without me She told me that she didn’t have many more Prides left Although she had stepped back a bit from daily duties at the bar meeting friends for lunch or dinner and taking care of people loved animals and it was absolutely reciprocated,” Manning said She just had this love for life and friendships
We were really lucky to have her as our family.”  A celebration of Brothers’ life will be held at the Wildrose on Capitol Hill from 2 to 9 p.m Editor’s note: Comments are disabled on this story Stay secure and make sure you have the best reading experience possible by upgrading your browser Dawn Sievewright leads the stage adaptation Tanyel Gumushan Exclusive: Wild Rose, a new musical written by Nicole Taylor and directed by John Tiffany, is up and running in Edinburgh – and photos have been released, alongside a single. The world premiere of Nicole Taylor’s new musical Wild Rose opens at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh next month We spoke to Janet Kumah who plays Susannah in this brand-new musical For people who may not have previously seen the film Wild Rose is about a woman who believes she has to leave behind everything she knows she discovers that home isn’t something out there in the world; it’s something she carries within her What makes this story the perfect one to transfer to the stage and they seem to connect with your soul in an unexplainable way The story itself is intimate but universal: the journey of finding yourself confronting obstacles outside of your control and letting go of what you thought your life should be to discover what actually makes you happy What has your process of finding the stage version of Susannah been laugh out loud moments that speak to the kind of rehearsal room we have - warm There was a lot to discover about Susannah and it all started with Nicole’s [Taylor] beautiful script There are subtle pointers to Susannah’s beat her rhythm and then there’s the space to play Trial and error has been invaluable as we’ve deep-dived into her journey why their paths have crossed at this moment in their lives and that path of learning has been encouraged by John [Tiffany - Director] and has been quite integral to finding Susannah on stage And then there’s Sarah [Travis] and Davey’s [Anderson] musical arrangements which capture the internal emotions that are part of Susannah’s journey - things she might not say outright but that sit in the music in the way it holds her Why is the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh a good place for Wild Rose to start its journey as a stage musical and the dreams that pull her from Glasgow to Nashville The cultural tones woven throughout give it a unique sense of place and identity It feels right to be grounding the show here This is one of your first ventures into the world of musical theatre How are you finding working on a musical in comparison to working on straight plays I have done some work in musical theatre but the process of working on this show has been very holistic in bringing acting really listening to ourselves as individuals or breath-work all led by Steven [Hoggett] and Vicki [Manderson] who create such a brilliant space to tune in and connect The movement in this show is fluid; it’s instinctual storytelling It’s been a deeply collaborative process rooted in truth What are your favourite songs that feature in the show I’ve hummed ‘Get Out of This Town’ in the kitchen and en-route to and from work quite a few times sung beautifully by Dawn [Sievewright playing Rose-Lynn] that’s brought a tear or two to my eyes really cleverly choreographed as part of a hilarious scene Why should audiences come to see the world premiere of Wild Rose in Edinburgh performed by an extraordinary ensemble of performers and the entire creative and production team have done such a stunning job of bringing this story to life on stage; the music it’s all woven together in a way that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable I think people will leave the theatre still feeling the songs in their bones maybe even Googling them on the way home if they didn’t already know them and we get to use them to tell this stunning story of self discovery Wild Rose plays at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh from 6 March-19 April, with further info here.
