Thousands of Windsor Enwin customers can expect rebates in their utility charges over the coming months to make up for a data error that caused some property owners to be overcharged

When they approved the new billing system last fall
council and Mayor Drew Dilkens had assured residents that they would pay less for utilities
“I apologize for the confusion this has created,” said Dilkens during the council meeting
“All of the people who have been working at the city and involved in this really were striving to get this right
or in any way an attempt to deceive the public
“It literally was a data error on the back end that we now have course-corrected.”
council agreed to change how the city calculates the stormwater fee charged to property owners
1 saw stormwater and wastewater fees separated on Enwin bills
Owners of properties with larger hard surfaces that limit rainwater absorption and create a greater burden on the city’s stormwater system now pay more
residential property owners pay for 42 per cent of the city’s stormwater infrastructure funding
and non-residential properties pay 58 per cent
residential property owners were paying the majority (55 per cent) of the cost
Enwin customers still have a fixed water charge
Fred Francis said he’s “been getting absolutely killed” with emails and phone calls from residents who say they’ve paid more under the new billing structure
“It’s not a matter of finger-pointing or blaming,” Francis said
The solution approved last month won’t help large commercial property owners like Joe Mikhail
who told the Star he expects his Enwin bills to rise by roughly $200,000 this year
his company owns roughly two million square feet of buildings
plus an estimated more than 25 million square feet of property surrounding those buildings
Mikhail said half of his 200 commercial tenants refuse to pay higher bills
has “caused nothing but chaos throughout the whole commercial and real estate industry.”
Mikhail recently invited city officials to one of his properties — a vacant lot on Howard Avenue covered in compacted gravel
and a few trees — to prove that water seeps into the ground
the lot should be exempt from higher stormwater fees now charged for impervious ground covering
City officials encouraged Mikhail to share his concerns with city council
which approved the bylaw that dictates what kind of ground coverings will result in higher fees
“Are you going to cripple the businesses that support our community because they have asphalt in place to bring customers
to bring business?” Mikhail asked during council’s most recent meeting
Mikhail submitted a video to city council of water being poured from a bucket onto the ground on that lot
the water appears to form a stagnant puddle
Deputy city engineer Stacey McGuire said the video shows how water on compacted granular material “will eventually make its way into the (stormwater) system through overland flow” instead of being absorbed into the ground
No one wants to pay more,” Dilkens told reporters following the meeting
“We’re trying to be very responsible and reasonable in the way that we move this forward
“The folks who have properties with big parking lots have been subsidized for many years by homeowners
This is about making sure that people pay their fair share.”

It's Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada
The week long awareness initiative is an opportunity for you to take action to ensure you're prepared to protect yourself
your family and your community during an emergency
The provincial theme for 2025 is "Plan for Every Season."
The concept embodies the unique challenges Windsorites face on a seasonal basis: from spring storms to summer heatwaves and high winds to winter snow and ice
Emergency Planning Officer with Windsor Fire & Rescue Services says there is no shortage of reasons to plan to protect your family and property
and you can do so by building an emergency kit
"Keep in mind the specific needs that your family has
making sure that you have basic necessities in that kit that during an emergency
different items like that," Bertram said
along with Windsor Police Service and Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is taking part in the first-ever province-wide campaign to tackle 9-1-1 misuse
an issue that continues to strain emergency services
Bertram says officials are trying to educate the public on proper use of the 9-1-1 emergency service 'When Every Second Counts'
"9-1-1 is for life-threatening or urgent emergencies
and if you're calling for instance for noise complaints
that would be the non-emergency line," she said
The Windsor Police Service non-emergency line is 519-258-6111
and the Windsor Fire & Rescue Services non-emergency line is 519-258-4444
The city offers its own alert program called 'Windsor Alerts' that provides updates
warnings and instructions during times of crisis
Bertram says city residents can register their address
and those who work in the city can register their work address as well
"It's specific to the location that you are putting
so there could be an alert that goes out that's sent to all of the users
or there could be an alert that only affects a specific area of Windsor
and so we geolocate the users that are signed up in that area," said Bertram
Signing up for the free 'Windsor Alerts' program is as easy as going to WindsorAlerts.ca or by calling 3-1-1.

Liberal Irek Kusmierczyk is asking the courts for a recount in Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore after multiple tabulation errors and a high number of rejected ballots made an already painfully tight race almost too close to call
Kusmierczyk told the Star his team applied for a judicial recount Monday morning after the discovery of 526 rejected ballots and more than 20 “discrepancies” — four of which changed the ballot count by 157 votes
The 526 rejected ballots accounted for “one of the highest totals in the country,” he said
“We had dozens of volunteers serving as scrutineers in polling stations across the region
we know there were ballots that were wrongly counted and wrongly rejected,” said Kusmierczyk
the riding’s Liberal member of Parliament since 2019
simply in how the results were communicated
“It’s how the numbers were communicated to Elections Canada in Ottawa
including four errors that had a material impact on the vote.”
After a standard post-election validation of results last week
the discovery of those four errors alone resulted in Conservative Kathy Borrelli’s lead in the April 28 federal election narrowing from 233 votes to 77
That’s only seven ballots short of the threshold for an automatic judicial recount
Elections Canada’s preliminary results following Monday’s election had Borrelli at 31,901 votes and Kusmierczyk at 31,668
The official count for Borrelli is now 32,062 votes
A judicial recount is automatically triggered when the difference between the two leading candidates is less than one one-thousandth of the total votes cast
“We feel very strongly that we owe it to all residents to make sure that every vote was valid and that every valid vote was counted,” said Kusmierczyk
“This is a process to make sure that we have 100 per cent confidence
that residents have 100 per cent confidence in the outcome of this election.”
Until the counts are confirmed in the validation of votes
election results are considered preliminary
The validated results are considered final
unless changes are subsequently made following a judicial recount or a contested election proceeding
Recounts are currently underway or expected in several other ridings across Canada
including Terra Nova-The Peninsulas in Newfoundland
where winning Liberal candidate eked past the Conservative runner-up with 12 votes
The Montreal-area riding of Terrebonne flipped on Thursday after Elections Canada published validated results for the region that showed the Bloc Quebecois nudged out the Liberals by 44 votes
the validation process ended with Liberals inching past the Conservatives by 29 votes
Elections Canada told the Star last week that the validation of results is a safety measure to catch human error
the local Elections Canada officer receives results from each polling location by phone before entering them into the system
The agency said that staff could mishear a result that was called in or make a mistake entering the data
Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore had 282 polls reporting
Kusmierczyk said such mistakes were what led to the four “significant” errors that changed the vote by 157 ballots
some of which Kusmierczyk feels were wrongly rejected
Kusmierczyk said someone wrote an X in the circle next to his name
then wrote a second X next to his name outside the circle
the intent of the voter is clear,” he said
The next step in Kusmierczyk’s application will be a judicial hearing
His team must present evidence before a judge
who will decide if a recount should proceed
That hearing had yet to be scheduled Monday morning
“I want to make this absolutely clear as well,” said Kusmierczyk
unequivocally accept the results of the judicial recount.”

the automaker advises the union the May 5 shutdown is to help prepare the way for the new vehicle model lineup
“As the company prepares for the upcoming launch of the 2026 model year Chrysler Pacifica
Chrysler Grand Caravan/Chrysler Voyager and Dodge Charger Daytona
we are adjusting production at the Windsor Assembly Plant in order to complete the build out of the 2025 model year vehicles,” Lou Ann Gosselin
Stellantis Canada’s head of communications
the plant will observe a down week the week of May 5
We will continue to monitor the situation.”
The more than 4,000 employees at Windsor Assembly are completing their second week back to work after a two-week shutdown
Stellantis idled the plant earlier in April as it tried to plan its production needs in the wake of U.S
President Donald Trump imposing a 25 per cent tariff on all imported vehicles
On an earnings call earlier this week with analysts
Stellantis’s parent company reported a 14-per-cent dip in first-quarter revenues and announced the “need to calibrate our North American investments
footprint and employment to ensure the profitability of our company.”
Chief financial officer Doug Ostermann didn’t elaborate on timelines needed to move production or supply chains to the U.S
He said the American tariff policies — and those of Canada and other countries in response — “are evolving.”
Unifor national president Lana Payne called for “swift action” on the part of the new Liberal government in response to General Motors’ latest announcement it would reduce its giant Oshawa Assembly Plant from a three-shift to a two-shift operation this fall
The announcement by GM came after news that Prime Minister Mark Carney
would meet with Trump at the White House in the coming days
“GM’s move is premature and disrespectful — jumping the gun before Prime Minister Carney and President Trump even begin their talks on a new economic deal,” said Payne
“Trump’s tariffs are designed to crush Canadian production … (but) the U.S
doesn’t get to free ride in Canada,” Payne warned
Unifor is Canada’s largest private-sector union
which also represents workers at both those assembly plants in Oshawa and Windsor
GM received “significant investments” for Oshawa from both Ottawa and the province in return for “a promise to maintain good jobs and production,” said Chris Waugh
Unifor GM Oshawa Assembly Plant chairperson
“We will not sit idly by as that promise is eroded one shift at a time,” he said
Unifor on Friday also urged Carney to meet with the heads of major automakers to publicly reaffirm their commitments to Canadian investment and production
including automakers that sell significant volumes of vehicles in Canada but build no vehicles here
Unifor pointed out that General Motors last year produced 151,000 vehicles in Canada
most of those imported from factories in the U.S

Caden Harvey looked comfortable pulling on a Windsor Spitfires jersey
Article contentA fifth-round pick by Windsor in last month’s Ontario Hockey League Draft
the Spitfires are hoping that will become a normal routine for the 17-year-old Harvey
“We think he can be an immediate impact player on our team,” Spitfires’ general manager Bill Bowler said
but it was a good sign that the talented forward was in town for the club’s two-day orientation camp
“It was good to finally get here,” the six-foot-one
Harvey is a bit of an unusual prospect in that he passed through the OHL Draft is his first year of eligibility a year ago
Harvey wasn’t viewed as a junior hockey prospect because he had a verbal commitment to Penn State University for 2027-28
when the NCAA opened the door for junior hockey players to play university hockey in the United States in November
Bowler made a deal with Sarnia to acquire Kitchener’s fifth-round pick in the draft and used it to take Harvey
but didn’t want to wait to get an ’08 (born player) that we think can play and a right shot that there’s some need for us” Bowler said of next season’s lineup

It looked even better when Harvey stepped through the doors on Saturday to listen to what the Spitfires had to offer and take part on and off the ice.
“I’m just kind of trying to get as much information as I can, seeing which way to lean and trying to pick up everything I can,” said Harvey, who had 47 goals and 95 points in 48 games last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 16U team. “Just see what the team’s all about and what team fits me best and which team’s going to get me to the next level.”
The Spitfires had 14-of-15 picks in from this year’s OHL Draft along with both selections from OHL U18 Draft in attendance.
The only missing piece was sixth-round pick Braden Horton, who has already made a two-year commitment to the U.S. National Team Development Program.
However, third-round pick Ty Bergeron was also on hand. A native of Flat Rock, Mich., Bergeron has signed a tender to play in the United States Hockey League for Muskegon next season.
Like Harvey, who spent part of the playoffs in the USHL with Waterloo, Bergeron was also looking for more information, but it marked his second visit to the WFCU Centre after catching Game 7 of Windsor’s conference semifinal against Kitchener.
“It was wonderful,” Bergeron said of that game. “It was actually like, the rink, was unreal and it was fun being here.”
Bergeron had 45 goals and 104 points in 67 games for the Detroit Honeybaked 15’s last season and at six-foot-one and 175 pounds, the 2009-born forward already looks physically mature enough to play in the league.
“I’m just trying to take in whatever I can, but I think my game translates really well to this league,” Bergeron said.
But Bowler said the weekend event was a pressure campaign for prospects, but merely a chance for players and family to get to know the city and the organization better.
“It’s an orientation,” Bowler said. “There’s no real evaluation of athletes. It’s getting to know who and what we are as a program and I always think it’s a productive couple of days when you get a chance to showcase our staff and city.”

The chances of an election recount in Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore have escalated after the discovery of possible tabulation errors made a narrow Conservative victory even more razor thin
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentFollowing Elections Canada’s standard validation of results
Conservative Kathy Borrelli’s lead over Liberal Irek Kusmierczyk shrunk from 233 votes to 77 — a mere seven ballots away from the threshold for an automatic judicial recount
He could not be reached for comment prior to the Star’s print deadline on Friday
such recounts can be an important part of the political process
said University of Windsor political scientist Lydia Miljan
especially for tight votes,” she told the Star
“And I think people’s emotions are pretty raw right now
ensuring that the count is the actual count and that mistakes weren’t made
I think does help assuage any concerns that people might have about the fairness of the count.”
But following the discovery of possible counting errors or wrongly excluded ballots during the validation of results
Borrelli now has 32,062 votes and Kusmierczyk is sitting at 31,985
There were 70,010 valid votes cast in Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore
The rules state that Kusmierczyck would have four days from certification
Elections Canada told the Star that validation of results
typically takes place within a week following election day
It’s a way to catch and correct human error
which is usually a result of miscommunication
Elections Canada spokesperson Diane Benson said staff at the Elections Canada office could mishear a result that was called in or make a mistake entering the data
validation involves checking the official records from each individual polling station and correcting any errors made during the transmission of results on a busy election night,” Benson told the Star in an email
The validation process can also catch other problems such as wrongly excluded ballots
Members of the media and public are not allowed to witness the validation of results
But Benson said candidates or their representatives do watch the whole process
Benson said they are final — unless changes are made following a judicial recount or a contested election proceeding
The split between Borrelli and Kusmierczyk is not the narrowest of the 2025 federal election
The Montreal-area riding of Terrebonne changed hands on Thursday after Elections Canada published validated results for the region that showed the Bloc Quebecois nudged out the Liberals by 44 votes
Preliminary numbers published Tuesday for the riding had the Liberals ahead by 35 votes
In the Newfoundland riding of Terra Nova-The Peninsulas
the winning Liberal candidate inched past the Conservative runner-up with 12 votes
where the NDP beat the Liberals by 77 votes
There were several other ridings across Canada where the difference between winner and loser was just a few hundred votes
It’s possible results for some ridings could still change following validation processes or judicial recounts
the Liberals are still only four seats shy of the 172 needed in the House of Commons for a majority government
“It looks like there might be about seven or eight that probably will go for a judicial recount or be eligible
because they’re within that .001 per cent margin of error difference,” said Miljan
“We saw the one yesterday flip from Liberal to Bloc
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Windsor-Tecumseh flipped after a validation.”

WindsorNewsWindsor events planned for CMHA Mental Health WeekBy Melanie KentnerPublished: May 05, 2025 at 11:04AM EDT
In what many might see as a shocking upset
Conservative Harb Gill has ousted 23-year NDP incumbent Brian Masse in Windsor West
flipping the riding blue for the first time in its nearly six-decade history
With 230 of 231 polls reporting as of early Tuesday morning
the retired LaSalle police constable had received 39.1 per cent of the vote (21,270 votes)
comfortably ahead of Liberal challenger Richard Pollock with 30.8 per cent (16,741 votes)
the NDP incumbent who had represented Windsor West federally since 2002
ended up in third position with 27.8 per cent (15,112 votes)
“People are ready for change,” a victorious Gill told reporters late Monday night
The mood was jubilant at Babylon Banquet Hall
where Gill’s election night event was held
A crowd of about 70 supporters rushed to surround Gill when the riding was called
“I’m incredibly grateful to the people of Windsor West that have given me the trust and confidence and faith for us to lead this city forward,” said Gill
What resonated with voters who backed his campaign
was his party’s plan to “deliver on our promises with action which will bring results.”
National pollsters mentioned Windsor West as one of the Canadian ridings to watch on election night
but the race had been projected to be between the NDP incumbent and his Liberal challenger
Pollock and Gill were locked in a close race for much of the night
but Gill’s lead gradually widened with each new poll being reported
The shift is notable for the Conservatives in a riding the party had never won and where they captured just 19 per cent of the vote in 2021
This race was the third time Masse and Pollock had jockeyed for Windsor West
Masse won in 2002 with 44 per cent of the vote
with Pollock coming in second with 35 per cent in a riding previously held by the Liberals for decades
Masse came out on top again with 46 per cent of the vote to Pollock’s 31 per cent
“It’s not the result that we wanted,” Masse told a room full of cheering supporters at the Hellenic Cultural Centre
“There isn’t a single regret that I have — I am super-proud and grateful for all of you here today
because I still believe in positive politics.”
Windsor West was created in 1966 from parts of the Essex East and Essex West ridings
Its boundaries have been redefined several times over the years
Windsor West was a Liberal stronghold under Herb Gray
who represented Essex West from 1962 until the riding was dissolved
and served as MP of Windsor West from 1968 until his retirement in 2002
Runner-up Liberal candidate Sandra Pupatello received 28 per cent
followed by Conservative candidate Anthony Orlando with 19 per cent
“It appears that the NDP vote collapsed and went Conservative,” said Pollock when asked about the riding’s flip to Tory blue
Carney has an opportunity to form a government
The numbers are certainly interesting in terms of what that government will look like.”
Mark Carney’s Liberals won a minority government
Both his main rivals — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in the Ottawa area and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in the Vancouver area — lost their own seats
with Singh responding to his party’s dismal performance nationally by announcing he was stepping down as leader
shows Windsor West has a population of 130,162
there were 92,656 people on the riding’s electors list
and a total of 49,197 votes were cast in Windsor West for a turnout of 53 per cent

The project is scheduled to start this fall, immediately following the 2025 baseball season. The goal is to have the diamond ready for the 2026 season.
Since the program’s inception, Jays Care has invested more than $20 million in 232 Field Of Dreams projects across the country.

Special Olympics athletes from across Windsor-Essex are proving what champions are made of this week
“It’s all about the fun,” said superintendent of education Todd Awender
“I’m a believer that regardless whether somebody has an exceptionality or not
the extracurriculars that take place in school — whether it’s athletics
or music — students love those things and that’s what gets them to class to be successful.”
The two-day event kicked off Friday with an opening ceremony featuring hundreds of competitors parading the track in their school jerseys before the day’s events began
Secondary school athletes were competing Friday
while elementary students are on Monday’s competition schedule
the kids have huge smiles on their faces,” Awender told the Star
“The staff that are involved also have huge smiles on their faces
“The competitive piece is not the goal of this event
It’s more about the participation and having fun.”
Races and competitions are also designed to accommodate non-ambulatory students or those with physical disabilities
Awender said the athletes are met with plenty of support
particularly from high school leadership students who help run the events
He added that many students say its their “favourite day of the year.”
is seeing the students smiling and returning to their schools to celebrate the ribbons they’ve earned
“It’s really an excellent experience for everybody,” Awender said
What would you do in a life-or-death situation
That was one of the scenarios Grade 11 students at Holy Names Catholic High School in Windsor faced Thursday during a hands-on health and first-aid course
The new class is part of a program that teaches students how to handle real-life medical emergencies
from properly applying a tourniquet and administering an EpiPen during an allergic reaction — to even treating an eyeball that has been impaled with a pencil
“I would love to get into something in the medical field — my dream is to be a doctor,” said Grade 11 student Uwakmfon Akpaso
“It’s a really great course because it’s very informative
even if you’re not planning on going into health care
said she first brought the idea to Holy Names Catholic High School after seeing a similar course being offered at the public school board
“I saw it at Vincent Massey Secondary School
and I got to teach there for several weeks,” said Wong
what an amazing opportunity that the public school board gets to have
How come the Catholic school board doesn’t have it?'”
was instantly popular and quickly filled up three sections
The Grade 10 course introduces students to basic first aid
including CPR and everyday medical emergencies
“really get into the nitty-gritty,” including anatomy and physiology — skills that will help students bound for medical fields
“It will give them a leg up if they do choose to pursue a health care profession,” said Wong
“It’ll really put them ahead of their classmates
and hands-on experience with a lot of common medical equipment.”
Wong shared that one student has already put their first aid knowledge to use outside of the classroom
She said the student recognized someone experiencing the classic signs of angina — chest pain radiating down the arm
and a pale face — usually caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart
‘Do you have a history of angina by chance
or has this happened to you before?’ And she said
do you have your nitroglycerin on you?’ Which is what I’ve been teaching them
the student retrieved the nitroglycerin and instructed the individual to place a tablet under her tongue
triggering improved blood flow to the heart
“He got to actually see it (nitroglycerin) work
Wong anticipates the course’s popularity to continue to grow when it’s offered again next school year
As much of the rest of Canada went red Monday night
an epic voter shift turned all of Windsor-Essex blue
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentIn a Canadian election often dominated by U.S
the Liberal Party of Canada scored a historic comeback on Monday with Prime Minister Mark Carney — leader of a party written off as a sure loser — winning a fourth government mandate
But an equally historic turn occurred in Windsor-Essex
where the Conservative Party of Canada swept every riding
Conservative Harb Gill won Windsor West over longtime NDP incumbent Brian Masse
who fell to third place after holding a seemingly unshakeable grip in the riding since 2002
The Conservatives also appear to have taken Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore from Liberal incumbent Irek Kusmierczyk
who helped bring a potentially unprecedented amount of funding and investment to the local region during his two terms as MP
The official vote was not yet certain Tuesday morning
“For Windsor to flip blue is quite something,” said University of Windsor political scientist Lydia Miljan
“It does show that the Conservative strategy of gunning for blue-collar support and for union support paid off
they were speaking to people where they lived
and people were feeling the cost of living
I think their strategy and timing played very well for them
Gill’s victory marks the first time Windsor West has had a Conservative MP in the riding’s six-decade history
you made your voices heard,” Gill told his roughly 70 supporters who gathered Monday night at the Babylon Banquet Hall in Windsor
“I am incredibly honoured and grateful for the trust you placed in me.”
Masse’s loss after 23 years was part of an epic unraveling for the NDP
Leader Jagmeet Singh stepped down early Tuesday after losing his own British Columbia seat — and party status in the House of Commons
The NDP went into the election with 24 seats and came out with seven
“I have zero regrets about anything that took place,” said Masse
“I have nothing but admiration and great experiences and fond memories
The hotly contested race in Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore was too close to call until after midnight
But Conservative Kathy Borrelli apparently unseated Liberal Irek Kusmierczyk
“We know that on everyone’s mind is affordability,” Borrelli said
Conservative incumbent Chris Lewis coasted to a decisive third consecutive win
it means the world to me that you’ve entrusted me once again to represent you in Ottawa,” he said
I will do it with humility and I will do it with a bounce in my step and a smile on my face.”
Conservative incumbent Dave Epp also easily held onto his seat in Chatham-Kent-Leamington
The seismic shift in the Windsor ridings means the region no longer has a representative of the governing party advocating for it
But Miljan said that doesn’t leave it out in the wilderness
Despite the Liberals winning a minority government and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s own loss in his Ottawa-area riding
the Tories gained about 20 seats on Monday
“The Conservatives are certainly in play,” said Miljan
The fact is that they did increase their vote share to higher levels than when they won in 2011 — but still not enough to topple the Liberals.”
She said Carney will also need the Conservatives to fight an American trade war — a vital issue for a border region with an economy intricately tied to the U.S
has a Canadian federal election been so focused on a foreign country and its leader
this was a referendum on who is best suited to take on U.S
President Donald Trump in a trade war and fend off his repeated suggestions Canada become a 51st state
Those fears — and a change in leadership to Carney from the increasingly unpopular Justin Trudeau — likely saved Liberal party fortunes
the Liberals were so unpopular that some polls predicted they might not secure the 12 seats needed to maintain party status
“We’re in sort of unprecedented territory,” said Miljan
“Job one now for Carney is to negotiate a trade deal with Trump
I think he will need the good will of opposition parties
“The pressure is going to be exceptionally high on him to deliver
He will need to have some unifying messages
And he needs to appeal to Conservatives in some respects.”

From a Windsor battleground to Winnipeg’s working-class
blue-collar workers across Canada changed their colours in the federal election
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentDespite losing the war
with the Liberals winning their fourth straight government mandate
the Conservatives actually picked up seats and won more than enough battles in Monday’s election to remain a significant force
And with an earthshaking shift in the political landscape
they did it in part by stealing labour votes
The Conservatives managed to take several seats from the Liberals
multiple former orange NDP strongholds once propped up on union shoulders turned Tory blue
“The Conservatives were very much targeting the labour vote and saw an opportunity to get support of blue-collar workers,” Lydia Miljan
a University of Windsor political scientist
One was to really attack the NDP for being inconsistent on labour and pointing out some of the personal qualities of Jagmeet Singh that weren’t really working class
“They were calling him the Maserati Marxist and things like that
but it’s sort of low information stuff that gets into people’s minds.”
with its identity built on being the party of labour
was decimated in a catastrophic slide from 24 seats to seven
co-founded by the Canadian Labour Congress
Singh announced on election night he was stepping down as NDP party leader after falling to third place in his own British Columbia riding
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre might also face a perilous future after losing in his own Ottawa-area riding
but the party picked up 20 more seats than it had going into Monday’s election
Those gains included the ousting of two incumbents in the Windsor area for a historic sweep of Essex County
every provincial and federal riding in Windsor-Essex was NDP territory
The party’s tenure in each riding ranges from one term to decades
Windsor West is the only provincial riding in the region that remains NDP territory
with the others now Conservative strongholds
It was the turn of the federal Conservatives to stage some major upsets on Monday
Conservative Kathy Borrelli won in Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore by ousting two-term Liberal incumbent MP Irek Kusmierczyk
and even earlier prior to name and boundary changes
But one of the most devastating Conservative blows landed in the key battleground riding of Windsor West
Conservative Harb Gill toppled the NDP’s Brian Masse
who fell to third place after reigning over the riding since 2002
It’s the first time in the riding’s six-decade history that voters installed a Conservative member of Parliament
Masse was among multiple MPs to go down with the NDP collapse
which allowed the Conservatives to seize many formerly orange ridings
including London-Fanshawe for the first time ever
The Tories also took the working class riding of Elmwood-Transcona in Manitoba
They flipped multiple Liberal ridings as well
such as heavily blue-collar Hamilton East — Stoney Creek
But those losses were far more devastating to the NDP
which gave up seven seats to the Liberals and 10 to the Conservatives
including an endorsement from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)
But the Conservatives spent the last couple of years chipping away at that base
and threats of annexation — dominated election debate
from rising food costs to the Trudeau government’s carbon tax
The Conservatives zeroed in on that bitterness
painting blame for it on the Liberals and arguing the NDP were powerless to do anything
they were speaking to people where they lived,” said Miljan
I think their strategy and timing played very well for them.”
The endorsements poured in: a longshoremen’s association in Halifax; a steelworker’s union in Sault Ste
At least 14 unions and labour organizations across Canada endorsed the Conservatives
representing plumbers and pipefitters in the Hamilton area
was among the first to get behind Poilievre
affordable homes and the freedom to responsibly own and use our legal firearms,” Local 67 business manager Nathan Bergstrand said at a Poilievre rally in Hamilton
Conservative promises of more respect for workers
and killing the carbon tax resonated among blue-collar ranks
“Their platform and even some of their campaign slogans — ‘boots not suits’ — really focused on
How can we get job opportunities for young people?’” said Miljan
“They had a suite of propositions in terms of training for younger people going into the trades
I think that did help them at the end of the day
because they’re at least speaking the language of labour.”

Windsor police have four suspects in custody following the seizure of guns
ammunition and more than $250,000 in cash and drugs
Two people were arrested Friday in the 600 block of Cameron Avenue by officers with the drugs and guns enforcement unit following an investigation that began earlier this year
Police said they found 130.1 grams of fentanyl
eight tablets of Trazadone and C$20,975 and US$335 in currency
Police said a subsequent search of a suspect’s vehicle turned up 1.917 kilograms of fentanyl
31 capsules of amphetamine and a digital scale
Officers also seized 332 grams of fentanyl
a sawed-off Remington Wingmaster Model 870 shotgun and seven 20-gauge shotgun shells during a search of a location in the 2800 block of Howard Avenue
where a third suspect was arrested on an outstanding warrant
police returned with a search warrant to the 600 block of Cameron Avenue
where they said they seized 170.2 grams of fentanyl
18 rounds of ammunition and an extended magazine
Officials said the total value of drugs seized in the operation was $237,935
face numerous drug possession and trafficking charges and gun possession charges
was also charged with possession of the proceeds of crime and four counts of breach of probation
was arrested Monday by the problem-oriented policing unit in the area of Pelissier and Ellis streets
Windsor police are searching for a male suspect wanted in connection to a series of armed robberies at convenience stores across the city
police said the suspect allegedly walked into five different convenience stores
brandished a weapon and threatened employees
Police said no injuries were reported during the incidents
Windsor police are also searching for another suspect connected to a string of retail store thefts that took place between March 8 and April 25
police said the suspect allegedly entered retail stores located in the 1900 block of Division Road and the 6600 block of Tecumseh Road East
The suspect allegedly picked out several Milwaukee brand power tools and exited the store without paying
The city is going to review security measures at all city-run and city-authorized events in Windsor
Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino requested during Monday's meeting that administration conduct an immediate review of the current event safety planning policies and that the report include a risk assessment process for all event spaces
Agostino requested the review after an SUV drove into a crowd attending a street festival in Vancouver
killing 11 people and leaving dozens injured
One man has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder
Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino says most street closures involve wooden barriers to prevent vehicles from entering
"The reason we use the wooden horses instead of something bigger is if an emergency vehicle needs to get through
We always have to leave 16 feet of clearance and room for quick ease
and someone has to be able to move that wooden horse
The issue is that the wooden horse is not very safe," he says
Agostino says he's helped with a number of events in his lifetime that have involved street closures
"I don't want the community to think there's a threat of some type of incident
But the thing I saw the most was distracted drivers
getting to within a foot of our barriers," he says
Agostino says he just wants to see what options are available for the types of barriers for street closures and how they can improve safety
"I wouldn't be able to live with myself if someone hit a patio or mistakenly went through a barrier and hit one person
Agostino asked that the report be expedited given the warmer weather brings with it a number of festivals and events across Windsor
