Project logistics industry stalwart Friedrich (Fritz) Paul Mumenthaler passed away on May 4
HLPFI was saddened to hear of the passing of Fritz
His last role in the project logistics industry saw him head up the Basel-based forwarding company General Transport as partner and ceo.
Fritz’s career began in 1964 with an apprenticeship at a logistics company called American Express
with whom Fritz learnt the “pleasure of forwarding”
After a spell with Belgium’s Ziegler group
he joined Thyssen Haniel Logistics in April 1979
becoming a vice director in June 1980 and ceo in 1983
Fast forward a decade and Fritz made his move to General Transport.
as he planned his retirement from General Transport
he described his involvement in the shipment of a huge quantity of frozen beef to North Korea from 2002 to 2003 as one of the “most interesting periods of [his] life”
including a meeting with a teenage Osama bin Laden while coordinating logistics services for infrastructure projects underway in Saudi Arabia
He also secured a Guinness World Record for arranging the heaviest item ever carried by aeroplane in 2009.
Fritz told HLPFI of his plans to take cruises with his wife and enjoy time at his second home in Bosnia and Herzegovina
while continuing to indulge in his passion for cigars and red wine
“I am looking forward to having the time to work in the garden
to be in the fresh air and to construct my days as I wish
without any pressure,” he said in 2018.
His advice to would-be project forwarders at that time: “Be innovative
but remember that this is not a business where you can just do the paperwork – you have to go to the site and you have to have the relationship with your customer
That is the most important thing.” Fritz was also a strong advocate of embracing oneself in local cultures
I always tried to respect the local customs
often working with long-time friend Armin Kalyaniwalla (formerly of MHTC
a company sold to Allcargo Logistics in 2012
and now director of Aurum Logistics).
very dear friend – more an elder brother – to me,” Armin told HLPFI
“Fritz was an icon of the logistics industry
always extending his large heart and hands to help colleagues.
“Most people whose lives he touched will surely remember him as the ‘Bud Spencer’ of the logistics world – a gentle giant
Having had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Fritz in Basel and at various Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) events across the years
the team at HLPFI express their heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

Speaking after yesterday’s finish in Arlesheim
CSC’S Frank Schleck said that stage three of the Tour de Suisse was a very tough day
and one which gave an indication as to who will be in the running for the final yellow jersey
This was a stage which was supposed to be flat
I think the last climb was much harder than anyone expected
hard day - it was up and down the whole time
On that last climb we have seen the really strong guys in the race
Schleck finished fourth in the race last year and said he was quite happy with how he was going yesterday
I think these short hills are not so good for me but I am looking forward to the big climbs

Switzerland teems with truly stunning villages (and towns too)
where historic and architectural landmarks blend into pristine nature
so choosing the 'most beautiful' ones is not an easy task
The newest pick, located in Basel-Country but just a 20-minute tram ride from the centre of Basel city, Arlesheim “has retained its village character,” according to the association
which every year crowns a 'best village' in Switzerland (though since 2019 Liechtenstein is included in the ranking as well)
Arlesheim “is characterised by a large number of historic buildings," the association said
created at the end of the 18th century as an English landscape garden (the largest in Switzerland)
The community is also home to the oldest settlement sites in the canton
Arlesheim is the 49th ‘beautiful village’ in the association network
as well as the principality of Liechtenstein

With her book ‘A Life With Colour’ Caroline Chanter presents the first comprehen-sive biography of the painter Gerard Wagner (1906–1999)
Wagner understood the colours as an alphabet and looked for objective principles in the encounter with the being of colour
“Gerard Wagner‘s paintings are colour symphonies in themselves whilst motifs as such recede into the background,” is how Caroline Chanter describes the painter‘s work from the 1990s onwards
This is not about losing oneself in colour
One can observe this particularly well in the metamorphosis series
retaining coherence whilst possessing independence at the same time
In 1924 Gerard Wagner spent time in the art colony of St Ives
studying with the landscape painter John Anthony Park
He learned from Park that colour expression is more important than form
the young artist studied at the Royal College of Art in London (UK)
It was Hookway Cowles who introduced him to Anthroposophy
In 1926 Wagner and Cowles travelled to the Goetheanum in Dornach
The impressions Gerard Wagner absorbed there turned what was intended to be a short visit into a lifelong stay
He deeply studied Anthroposophy and the artistic impulses it has inspired in eurythmy
Through colour experiments he explored objective principles of the essence of colour
Gerard Wagner encompassed this in the words
was expressed in the “direction” of the artistic activity
Wagner‘s work was shown in an international exhibition at Menshikov Palace
a wing of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg
who studied with Gerard Wagner and is now head of the Dornach painting school founded by him

and including many photos and illustrations

the French technology groups Bouygues and Vinci have located 400 workplaces
According to the plans of the Uptown Basel makers
50 to 100 companies with up to 2,500 jobs will one day reside on the site
As an "incubator for innovation and technology transfer," the project is to comprise nine buildings on more than 70,000 square meters within ten years
The investment volume is stated at half a billion francs
Behind the project is the private ownership of the family Monique and Thomas Staehelin
The next buildings in the construction process are the two energy centers for electricity and heat
which uses waste heat from the site as well as biomass to provide heat
The Birsstadt heating network currently brings together 25 existing heating plants and networks in the Birs Valley
The heating network will be converted to renewable energies and thus become independent of natural gas
The basis for the development of Uptown Basel is the Untere Weiden II neighborhood plan
which was approved by the Arlesheim municipal assembly in March 2022 with 144 votes in favor to 20 against

Switzerland consumed 58 billion kWh of electricity
Around 35% of the total was produced from nuclear, 59% from hydro, and 6% from other sources, based on 2015 Swiss Federal Office of Energy SFOE numbers
Switzerland’s nuclear power plants – Source: World Nuclear Association
The country has five nuclear reactors on four sites with a total generation capacity of 3,315 MWe
which produced 24 billion kWh of gross electrical energy in 2015
Switzerland has a plan to shut down all of its nuclear power stations. In May 2011, the Swiss federal council decided to switch off all reactors at the end of their safe operational lifespans
the last reactor would be shutdown in 2034
the government has made no commitment to close any nuclear reactor by a specific date
Each of the four sites is summarised below:

Three of Switzerland’s nuclear power stations are on the banks of the Aare river
contained entirely within Switzerland’s borders
starts near the 2,164 m high Grimsel pass in the canton of Bern
out of lake Biel and across the Swiss plateau before emptying into the Rhine river
which forms part of the border between Germany and Switzerland
In addition to cooling three nuclear power stations
it drives 40 sets of hydroelectric turbines
MWe should not be confused with MWh. One MWe is one million watts of generation capacity. One MWh is one million watts of electrical power produced or consumed over one hour, a measure of energy – detailed definition

The beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday means that Austrians will be giving up tasty treats for a few weeks
as the traditional Christian fasting season begins
so Austrians are buying them in the millions

There are strict standards to be maintained
A Krapfen must - if not containing a hole - be filled with apricot jam
which must be at least 15 percent of the whole

On Saturday Faschingskrapfen are being given away at eight popular markets in Vienna
NO DRAGSTER RACING Due to the cancellation of several drag racing events
the automobile world federation FIA has canceled the European Championship 2020
there is practically no more starting opportunity for Jndia Erbacher either
the regional television brought a TV report about the change of domicile of Fat Attack from Arlesheim to Dornach
regional television ran a TV report about Fat Attack's change of domicile from Arlesheim to Dornach
no one suspected that such a long break from racing would come
Jndia Erbacher is the fastest female racer in Europe in terms of top speed (513.31 km/h)
and the second fastest over the usual distance of 1000 feet
The woman from Basel-Landschaft has also been on the podium of the top class Top Fuel several times
her nitromethanol rocket with more than 10,000 hp remains silent
Too high costs without FIA status Because three out of five dragster events have been cancelled so far
including the annual season highlight in Hockenheim
there will be no FIA European Championship in 2020
This means that there is no longer a suitable starting opportunity for Jndia Erbacher
who is aiming for her first race win and the European Championship podium
It could be that England announces another fun race towards the end of the season
If there's no prize money and travel subsidies like for European Championship races
the financial outlay and the possible return no longer balance each other out."
Necessary vehicle conversion At least the cancellations don't put her and her own team Jndia Erbacher Racing in a time crunch
chassis reinforcements will be mandatory in the area from the front to the feet
In order to get this right and to be able to start in the USA in the foreseeable future
the woman from Basel wants to have this done under the direction of her American crew chief
The only thing is that he won't come to Switzerland especially for this reason without racing assignments
Long-distance destination USA The ambitious daughter of the six-time FIA European champion has no choice but to wait and see
And also to use her time to cultivate and search for sponsors
Jndia Erbacher: "So he then also knows the newly built car exactly
I would have liked to drive somewhere else
Now we'll just use the time until 2021 for clean preparation and hope that the situation will calm down by then
The sponsors are skeptical anyway as to whether we can offer them anything at all this year
preferably with our first races in the USA
Because in Europe it's getting more and more difficult for us from the Top Fuel class."
made a nice short film about the fascination of Top Fuel Racing with Jndia Erbacher

FROM ENGLAND TO ARLESHEIM At the first round of the FIA European Dragster Championship in England
Jndia Erbacher was eliminated in the quarterfinals
On Saturday evening the broad Swiss audience will see her in the season show "SRF bi de Lüt - in Arlesheim "
The FIA Main Event in the dragster mecca Santa Pod was the season opener for the European Championship
The FIA Main Event in the dragster mecca of Santa Pod marked the season opener for the European Championship
in which Urs Erbacher's daughter Jndia is competing in the top class
The Fat Attack team around the six-time European champion traveled to England last week with a virtually new Top Fuel dragster
The test with the approximately 10,000 hp vehicle under racing conditions went well from a technical point of view
This is due not least to the gentle driving style of the pilot
who amazed everyone last year with second place in the final of the NitrOlympiX in Hockenheim
the 22-year-old Swiss came quite close to her goal of making the 1000-foot sprint in a time under four seconds for the first time
with 4.1066 and 245.21 mph ((394.54 km/h) top speed
Jndia was defeated in an all-female duel by Finland's Anita Mäkelä
she has only completed ten races in a Top Fueler in her career
Apart from the three top riders Liam Jones
Antti Horto and last year's champion Duncan Micallef
no one had ever ridden the track at this level
So it is not surprising that these three riders occupied the first three places after the qualifying
the joy at what has been achieved outweighs the disappointment
Jndia Erbacher: "To be able to run 4.10 in just the third qualifying run with a new Top Fuel dragster from the transporter without setup data is very good
The team did a bang-up job and deserves a big thumbs-up."
Family duel in Hockenheim The Basel-Landschaft native's next sporting appearance will not be until August in Hockenheim
the team is concentrating on the most important event of the year
Urs Erbacher will also take to the wheel of his Top Fuel dragster again
Jndia is not planning a full European Championship season until 2019
Swiss television visits Arlesheim Already on Saturday evening
Jndia Erbacher will be introduced to a wider Swiss audience
The season show "SRF bi de Lüt - Frühlingsfest" is visiting Arlesheim BL
The well-known presenters Nik Hartmann and Annina Campell welcome prominent guests and exciting local personalities in this program (20.10 to 22.10)
who is considered the fastest woman in Switzerland in terms of top speed
No doubt she'll be quick-witted in her answers to interview questions
