Well, let’s pick his story back up at John Carroll in Division III in 1999. Arth quickly won the starting job and proceeded to rewrite the record book, setting 18 school records. He parlayed his All-America junior and senior seasons into an opportunity with the Indianapolis Colts as a backup Realizing his appetite for the game and his ability to break down the X’s and O’s like studying the opponents’ blitz packages “I was really fortunate to earn the trust of Peyton and earn the trust of the coaching staff to get some of those projects and prove that I could add value in whatever way that was,” Arth said “It wasn’t necessarily going to be out there between the white lines but to add value in whatever way they needed me to was most important to me.” Arth said he wasn’t even interested in coaching at the time that experience was in some ways his first foray into coaching you’re going to be a great coach one day,’” Arth said Tell me I got a shot to play quarterback.’” When Caldwell was promoted to head coach in 2009, he offered Arth a chance to be on his staff. But the kid who refused to give up in high school wasn’t ready to give up on his NFL dream just yet He continued to bounce around in various leagues the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League before finally deciding it was time to hang up the cleats I loved the people I worked for,” Arth said Arth got a call from his former head coach at John Carroll Arth was promoted to head coach in December 2012 Arth led John Carroll to a 40-8 record in four seasons then moved up in class to coach Chattanooga from 2017 to 2018 and then jumped to Akron as the Zips went just 3-24 in three seasons He spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers as a passing game specialist alongside Brandon Staley before joining the Steelers’ staff this offseason Steelers' offensive makeover continues with hiring of Zach Azzanni Arth has the benefit of focusing on one position instead of being the CEO of an entire team like he was as a college head coach as he has the unique task of leading a quarterback room with one established veteran who is trying to recapture his top form and a young passer who is working to reach his full potential When it comes to Wilson Arth said the offensive staff has asked itself “What is it about Russ that makes Russ special And how do we build our offense around that?” there’s a certain style of play that’s associated with it,” Arth said “It fits who we are as the Pittsburgh Steelers very well.” Reading between the lines, it seems Arth and the Steelers are trying to create an environment similar to Seattle, with a reliable running game and plenty of play-action that takes advantage of Wilson’s trademark deep ball “That’s part of the art of coaching,” Arth said “Understanding who your players are and being able to adapt and adjust your philosophies and scheme to what suits your players the best way.” the challenge is a bit different with a hyper-mobile quarterback who has great arm talent but struggled with turnovers in his first three seasons Arth and the Steelers are working to refine his mechanics and hone his process to add consistency to his enticing athletic profile “He’s really focused so much energy and attention on his footwork in the pocket being accurate with the ball in the pocket,” Arth said you kind of saw them starting to take shape in OTAs and minicamp to really see his growth and development as a quarterback.” can they hang on to the starting gig long enough to solidify the position in the future Arth will be a driving force behind the scenes working to maximize the potential of both passers (Top photo of Tom Arth: Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers) Here are the results from two of the meets More: Girls basketball: Adena's Day picks up 100th win; Unioto remains perfect in SVC 200-yard girls medley relay: Chillicothe’s team of Reina Cunningham, Bella Flores, Sarah Johansen, and Addison Gibson came in first with a time of 2:18.72. They’ll be coached by a new face, too. Of the several coaching staff changes the team made this offseason, Tom Arth was tabbed as the Steelers’ new quarterbacks coach. A relatively fresh face in the NFL he’ll be a critical component to reviving Wilson’s career while taking Fields from potential to production Arth’s name is synonymous with John Carroll it won’t be on your television most Saturdays but you’ll feel the school’s influence every Sunday If Miami (Fla.) was once dubbed DB U and Ohio State a modern day WR U This isn’t a coaching tree – it’s a coaching forest Before becoming a coach, Arth was a stellar quarterback and once named the greatest player in program history. After an NFL stint that included being teammates with Peyton Manning and spending time in NFL Europe hanging up his cleats for a coach’s headset It was there he coached the likes of DL Chris Rizzo and QB Anthony Moeglin two men who became just as impressed with Arth the person as they were the coach “Coach really did spend a lot of time pouring into us as young men,” Rizzo tells me in a recent interview “He put good people around us that were gonna give us more than just football I think that was one of the most influential pieces is that there’s a lot of guys who say and bring a lot of guys in Coach was always a leader by example and a model of what he wanted us to be.” After spending several seasons as an offensive coach, Arth became the school’s head coach in 2013. In his four years in that role, he posted a sparkling 40-8 record. His squad pulled off the stunner of 2016, ending Mount Union’s 112-game winning streak with a 31-28 victory handing the Purple Raiders their first regular season loss since 2005 “He always had a really good way of balancing the intensity of what we were about to experience with a message of love for your teammates,” says Moeglin the quarterback responsible for throwing the game-winner to beat Mount Union It takes a group of guys who are committed to each other committed to winning that football game and doing everything they can “There’s one [pre-game speech] in particular against Mount Union where somebody caught it on video it snaps you back into that moment.” Moeglin grew up in the northeast Ohio region he tore every conceivable ligament in his shoulder making a tackle his senior year of high school he played out his basketball and baseball seasons popping his shoulder into place when need be John Carroll had a quarterback battle in 2016 The initial results weren’t promising he had completed less than half his passes and thrown five picks But Arth kept him steady and boosted his quarterback’s confidence when it was needed the most he’s got a really good way of just building you up Just pumping you with confidence if things are going good,” Moeglin said “He kind of accelerates that if things are going bad He’s got a really good way of just keeping you confident That I wasn’t in over my head and all those things to kind of keep me going.” Moeglin completed over 80 percent of his passes in a blowout win over Heidelberg Moeglin was Manning incarnated on an Ohio field tossing six touchdowns in a 62-7 win over Wilmington John Carroll finished 12-2 before falling in the semifinals Rizzo has the perspective of playing and coaching during Arth’s tenure Transitioning to the latter as a linebacker and tight ends coach Rizzo understood the NFL-like process Arth brought to the school I’ll never forget the amount of the amount of NFL tape and learning that we had an opportunity to get to as a Division III player…For us You were expected to know what you were doing “The amount of detail that coach wanted in these things the amount of attention to the small details really gave you the idea that this is something a little bit different than you were kind of signing up for you don’t always necessarily get to see the behind-the-scenes I don’t necessarily think he was trying to create a professional environment I think that’s just something that Coach always existed in and always held himself to And then that was just the way he did things.” It was run like a professional program and that was really cool Tuesday through Friday were gonna be harder than Saturday ‘We’re gonna go hard in practice We’re gonna put you in tough positions hard positions to succeed and see what you can do.’ Because when your preparation’s tougher than the actual game Despite the NFL environment shaped by his time in the league Arth didn’t brag about his football story there were acknowledgments of it in his office But his focus wasn’t on wielding his NFL credentials to shut down arguments It was merely imparting the knowledge he gained to his staff and players The rare NFL mention was players poking fun of his NFL Blitz rating Arth wasn’t just cognizant of winning on the field He once brought in an etiquette coach to help his players brush up on their dinner manners when Twitter wasn’t nearly as prominent as today he asked a social media specialist to speak one day outlining the importance of building your name the right way Arth’s success quickly got him noticed. UT-Chattanooga hired him as its head coach in 2017 and two years later, he was in the FBS running Akron, endorsed by Peyton Manning for the job He didn’t find the same success there the Zips a historically tough program to win at but it spoke to the high regard everyone who meets Arth holds him Whether it’s a D-III quarterback like Moeglin Fundamentals are key and good quarterback play comes from the ground up “His biggest thing is making sure you have good footwork,” Moeglin explained it’s the same kind of footwork drills I was watching some OTA clips of Justin Fields and Russell Wilson all the things that they were doing was the same stuff that I was doing.’…His fundamentals and one of those big ones is making sure your feet are perfect you’ll see those guys repping all sorts of types of different kind of footwork drills making sure your shoulders and your eyes move with your feet “His biggest thing is making sure your base is strong You should be able to stand shoulder width apart and not be able to move you off your spot really strong so that you can explode from there Because your arm strength is really driven through your lower half And if you have good base and you’re on balance So that was his biggest thing is making sure that base was strong.” Maximizing a player’s talent by way of being a teacher “He’s a really good teacher,” Rizzo said “I remember I’d pop into his office to do some of the diagrams or some of the playbook drawings as a young coach And there was never any question that was too stupid There was always a ‘Why?’ There was always an extraordinarily tangible piece that he was able to link to your learning process as a coach and a player And he’s a really strong and passionate learner as well.” Rizzo and Moeglin spoke to Arth’s intense competitive drive The urge to create competition for himself and for those he’s leading an ideal atmosphere for a quarterback competition the team is framing as open between Wilson and Fields “He’s competing not just to be the best quarterback’s coach,” Rizzo said “He’s not competing just to be the best assistant coach The guy is competing in all facets of what he does Whether it’s competing to know the playbook the best whether it’s competing about creating competition among his room He used to tell us all the time that competition breeds excellence…So you have a competitor in that quarterback’s room You have a guy that regardless of situation or circumstance he’s gonna go tooth and nail for you.” Once together on John Carroll’s campus Arth is in Pittsburgh for his first season with the Steelers entering his second year as the head coach of a promising North Catholic squad In a reminder of the type of accomplished people the school produces the company’s CEO is a John Carroll alum Even if their encounters are total happenstance as Arth’s was with Moeglin earlier this summer I was flying out to the West Coast for work All of a sudden I see Coach Arth’s name and he starts calling me and I’m like ‘What in the heck?’ I answer and he goes are you in the Denver airport?’ And we turned and we talked for 25 minutes Wednesday’s report date won’t be his first trip to Latrobe Vincent College played Arth’s John Carroll squad including a 26-3 win in Latrobe to open the 2015 season He hopes tenure as a Steelers coach gets off to the same promising start one of my favorite parts about him is he’s so smart,” Moeglin said and it’s gonna match up with Russell and with Justin very and he’ll do anything he can to make sure Pittsburgh wins.” Quis autem vel eum iure reprehenderit qui in ea voluptate velit esse quam nihil molestiae consequatur Temporibus autem quibusdam et aut officiis debitis aut rerum necessitatibus saepe eveniet We use ads to fund this site and continue to bring you premium Steelers content If you like what you see on this site, we now have an ad-free option available for a donation of $25 per year and you can enjoy the site entirely ad-free Additionally, if you'd like to donate above and beyond the ad-free option, you can donate via PayPal as well Julius Arth is back with a fresh new track, “Game Of Life,” and it’s already shaping up to be a defining hit of the year. Not only does the team have a brand-new quarterback room, it has a new quarterbacks coach. Tom Arth was hired for the role early in the offseason tasked with reviving Russell Wilson’s career and coaching up Justin Fields to maximize his potential OC Arthur Smith praised the job Arth’s done “He believes in the details, the fundamentals. He’s a fantastic communicator,” Smith said via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette YouTube channel. “And ultimately we’re teachers and that’s a big part of our job And Tom checked a lot of those boxes.” Arth isn’t new to coaching but relatively new to the NFL Hired in 2022 by the Los Angeles Chargers due to ties with then-head coach Brandon Staley (whom Arth hired at John Carroll years prior) he served as the team’s pass-game specialist the previous two seasons Pittsburgh tabbed him as its new quarterbacks coach as Mike Sullivan The team also let go assistant QBs Coach David Corley While Smith had never coached alongside Arth until this year there’s still links that tie them together “Tom’s a guy I’ve gotten to know from afar John Gannon and I shared an office in Tennessee So I got to know them over the years.” As we outlined in our “Big Book Of Tom Arth,” he grew up outside of Cleveland attending and playing quarterback at D-III powerhouse John Carroll He would leave a superstar and named the greatest player in school history working his way up to run the program in 2013 That led him to stops at Chattanooga and Akron though success at each was more fleeting While Arth lacked the talent to stick long-term in the NFL Spent some time with Mike McCarthy.” Arth spent several years on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad behind Manning where he would routinely be quizzed about the playbook and how to react in certain situations Arth left such an impression that Manning vouched for Akron to hire him a decade later Not only do the Steelers have new-looking personnel on offense All coaches in key units who must perform well not only will the Steelers’ offense spring to new heights these coaches could earn looks and promotions from around the league Entering this season, Justin Fields wasn’t supposed to be the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting QB, but circumstances changed things. Russell Wilson dealt with a nagging calf injury, and suddenly, Fields was the starter for the first six games. He played well, but Mike Tomlin wanted to see what Wilson could give the Steelers when healthy it felt like Fields didn’t have full command of the offense but Steelers quarterbacks coach Tom Arth states that isn’t true “We really did not limit Justin [Fields’] calls at the line of scrimmage,” Arth said Wednesday via the team’s media department “We put as much on him in the first few weeks of the season as we’re asking Russ to do at the line.” Earlier this year, Fields did reveal just how much freedom he has at the line of scrimmage It sounded like he couldn’t really change plays Wilson shouldn’t be able to do that either considering Wilson’s veteran experience it would be odd to not allow him to make changes based on the coverages he’s seeing It’s likely that Arth just doesn’t want to make it seem like Fields is worse than Wilson. Everyone on the team has made it clear that Fields impressed them. If Wilson has any more freedom than Fields it’s probably more about his time in the league Arth also spoke about how the offense hasn’t really changed with Wilson in the lineup as opposed to Fields depending on who your quarterback is,” he said regardless of what offensive system you’re in But I wouldn’t say that there’s anything that we weren’t able to do with [Fields] that we can do now with [Wilson].” That’s a fair answer. The Steelers’ offense does look basically the same. They still prioritize running the ball It isn’t like the Steelers are a pass-happy team with Wilson under center some things obviously have to change because Wilson and Fields are different players For instance, Fields is much more mobile than Wilson there were more designed runs for the quarterback with Fields as the starter Wilson is giving the Steelers a little more consistency in the passing game Steelers QBs Russell Wilson and Justin Fields sharing the moment. who won numerous hearts in Mahesh Bhatt’s Arth and Subhash Ghai’s Karz His Karz co-star Rishi Kapoor had tracked Raj down in the US in 2011 and that was the last we heard of Raj For someone who was remembered as an engaging it was shocking that his rumoured death could gather momentum so easily Rishi Kapoor met the missing actor’s brother Govind Mehtani Rishi had been wondering what had happened to Raj Kiran “The question was haunting me for a very long time Then these rumours of Raj being no more began doing the rounds How can a colleague with whom I shared some really good times I decided to look up Raj’s elder brother Govind Mehtani to find out about Raj.” It was then that the shocking truth about Raj Kiran spilled out But he was confined to an institution in Atlanta due to health problems Apparently Raj paid for his own treatment in Atlanta by working within the institution Rishi remembered Raj as very well read and clever with his repartees It seems Raj went through a series of domestic crises which left him in a state of acute depression He was apparently institutionalised in India before he left for the US Though Raj has not been working for a long time So he was not financially challenged by his illness whose dazzling smile had lit up many potboilers for two decades giving remarkable performances in films like B R Ishara’s Kagaz Ki Nao Meenakshi Sheshadri and former Tamil Nadu CM Chargers.com is chatting with every Bolts assistant coach this offseason The opportunity that Brandon [Staley] presented to me and my family in a time of transition really meant a lot to me on so many levels There's the personal side of it with someone being there for you in tough times And then there's the chance to certainly live out a dream all I thought about was playing in the NFL I never knew I wanted to be a coach and didn't know I wanted to coach until I started coaching I was fortunate in my young coaching career that I became a head coach so early so I never got to pursue that But I had a few opportunities to explore in the NFL and my relationship with Brandon and Tom Telesco — people that I know so well and believe wholeheartedly in — I feel this organization is on the verge of accomplishing some really special things." "Really just being a support element for all of our coaches particularly on the offensive side of the ball Certainly anywhere that I can lend my experience or contribute in any way is what I try to do I've been really fortunate to work in the quarterback room and get a chance to learn from our coaches Justin just has so much potential and has already had so much success so I've learned how you coach the elite of the elite and it's just been really beneficial for me I've just enjoyed having an opportunity to learn and grow For the last 10 years I was leading and out in front [as a head coach] so I've loved getting a chance to be more in the background and absorb and serve and help any way I can." You and Kellen Moore are both former NFL quarterbacks What have you learned from him in recent months and what are your conversations like Kellen has had a really great approach coming in The Chargers have had a lot of success on offense under Justin so Kellen has done a really good job of all the things that have been so successful here and really trying to integrate that into what his philosophy is He does bring a different philosophy and a different approach but I think it's going to be really good for us I feel he's gotten our offense off to a really great start He puts our concepts into families and has just helped everybody come together and learn the system together The other side that he's spent just as much time on is building relationships and camaraderie and the connection we all have together When you get everyone working in the same direction for the same goal That approach sounds like one of a former quarterback How does your experience there affect how you see and approach the game you have to be a really competitive person You have to be someone who is willing to serve and bring the best out of people around you But you also have to have a big-picture outlook on the game itself and understand what every situation is and understand what we're really trying to get accomplished with each play Those are some of the things I enjoy most about the game I do think playing quarterback helped me become a good coach and there's certainly a lot that I've learned coaching that I wish I knew when I was playing But with the way Brandon has created the culture here we all have the opportunity to learn the game from each other and become the best we can be that helps our players become the best that they can be." You spent two seasons in NFL Europe back in 2004 (Scottish Claymores) and 2005 (Hamburg Sea Devils) I really enjoyed my time there both personally and professionally The opportunity to go over there and continue to work on your game to practice and to play for an extra four months I had some great coaches but then you also meet these players from all over the country from different teams in the NFL that were allocated there and you build some pretty special relationships Then you go back to your team and try to use that development My time in Scotland was probably my favorite One of my best friends was able to come over and spend a month with us He was a college golfer so we got to go and play Turnberry and St It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing so it was just really cool." You were with the Colts organization for three years and overlapped with Tom Telesco there Did you know him before you got to Indianapolis but that's really where we developed a relationship He was the one that called me after the draft and told me they wanted to bring me in and sign me as a free agent That's a moment I will always cherish and will never forget that It was special then and it's special now being able to work here with him." Anything you learned from being around Peyton Manning Peyton is one of the all-time greats to ever play the game And I don't know if anyone has ever played the quarterback position as well as he did Peyton embodies every single one of those things on a daily basis He kind of brought me in and showed me how he watches tape so that I could help him and his preparation … if I had known I wanted to coach at that point it would have made it that much sweeter But I truly feel I just learned so much about the game with his approach and mindset You work with a star quarterback here in Justin Herbert but any similarities with Justin and Peyton I think Justin is more athletic but Peyton was more athletic than people give him credit for Justin is rare with that combination in size But where I really see similarities is how they operate in the pocket Peyton had this ability to play in the pocket when things got tight and things got around his feet keep his eyes downfield and navigate the pocket … I see that in Justin's game It's much less common than in today's NFL than it was 20 years ago You see it less today but it does remind me of Peyton Both are just really smart players and people Peyton is a good guy to have some traits in common with." You were a head coach in college for nine years at John Carroll What did you learn about yourself being in those roles but really what is most important in this profession and that's making an impact on people's lives who you have the opportunity to coach Just how much they're counting on you and how much their families are counting on you You have to be at your best every single day It's such an incredible opportunity to have that responsibility and know that every single day when you wake up that there are hundreds of people counting in you to do your job as well as you can possibly do it That was something I really cherished and enjoyed You go through it — I certainly had a lot of highs and certainly had some lows — but what I learned is that I'm going to be the same guy no matter what the situation and circumstances are coach them the same way and that's something I'm proud of I'm not going to change if we win or lose or depending on how our season is going Just be consistent every day for the people I have the opportunity to coach and lead I learned a lot about the game and how to handle players but mainly it's how to be at your best at all times." which is about 35 miles from Brandon Staley's hometown "I didn't know him when we were growing up I didn't meet him until just after I became the head coach at John Carroll We had hired a defensive coordinator but two or three practices in I had actually reached out to Jonathan Gannon I asked if he had interest in the job but he wanted to stay in the NFL 'He's a rock star and it will be a no-brainer.' We bring Brandon in for an interview and I knew instantaneously that this was our guy That's really where our relationship started It was really special and I learned so much from Brandon We really built a program together and did some special things at John Carroll." Did you know back then he had head-coaching material You could have asked me the day we hired him 'Do you think this guy will coach in the NFL someday Will he be a head coach in the NFL someday?' I probably would have said yes and that it was going to happen sooner than we think He's one of those rare people who has all the traits It's how he leads and deals with people and how he communicates and his knowledge and expertise and passion but what is your biggest accomplishment in life so far My wife and I have been married 19 years in July and we've been together nearly 30 years We have five kids together and I think just seeing how our family is grown and the type of kids we've raised It's what I'm most proud of and they are what I'm most proud of my dream was always to play in the NFL and I had that opportunity coaching at John Carroll and beating Mount Union [to end its 112-game conference win streak and snap a 22-year conference title run] But really what always meant the most to me was the first time I ever started at quarterback at Saint Ignatius High School that was the biggest moment in my life and a dream since I was 5 years old If you don't know about Saint Ignatius and who they were at the time and what it meant to be the starting quarterback there But it was everything to me at that point in my life And it took until the fifth game my senior year to do that I was 11th out of 13 quarterbacks my freshman year and most of those guys quit I remember running out onto the field knowing I was going to realize a lifelong dream at that point Secure your 2023 Season Ticket Memberships today! It’s unclear what Mike Sullivan’s role will be but we know Arth will work with the quarterback room He’s certainly not a household NFL name though that doesn’t speak to his ability to coach Let’s find out more about the team’s latest hire the same school that’s produced other NFL coaches like Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon and former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dave Ragone Arth attempted to hire Gannon and is friends with Ragone so you wonder if he could ever make his way to the Steelers’ coaching staff considering his ties to him and OC Arthur Smith he bided his time and slowly moved up the depth chart He worked and became the school’s starter five games into his senior season which he still cites as one of his proudest athletic achievements ranking ahead of names like LB London Fletcher and former Houston Texans GM Nick Caserio (who Arth replaced at QB) here’s Arth scrambling for a touchdown against Baldwin-Wallace in November of 2001 He would be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2013.  A torn labrum in his shoulder during his senior year caused him to miss four games Putting off surgery that would’ve ended his season he returned for John Carroll’s playoff run The injury tamped down the NFL interest Arth received once saying scouts were showing up nearly every day until only the Indianapolis Colts kept in contact with him after getting hurt Those connections kept the Colts in touch with Arth and he signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent after the 2003 NFL Draft He’s commonly referred to as “Peyton Manning’s backup,” which is technically true He spent 2003 through 2005 on the practice squad but said he was proud to hear Tony Dungy tell him he made the practice squad ahead of the ’05 season I have to wonder if Mike Tomlin called Dungy before making this hire Manning said Arth essentially served as an assistant coach usually not allowed for practice squad players Manning and [Jim] Caldwell gave him a special project like studying the opponent’s blitzes or watching the television copy of the previous game to see what words the defense might be able to hear And look, here’s a photo of Arth and Manning. My favorite part is the caption that specifies Arth is on the left and Manning on the right Arch would go on to serve as a counselor at some of the Manning passing camps In a 2016 interview with John Carroll, Arth told a great story of the pop quizzes Manning would give him and the other backup quarterbacks Which probably didn’t feel that great at the time “I learned very quickly that you had better be prepared for anything and everything that he could possibly throw at you Peyton was famous for randomly asking obscure and difficult questions that pertained to the film what’s your call here in this situation…it’s 3rd and-9 there’s 1:27 seconds left in the game 6.’  He would literally count down the clock Or if you didn’t have a good answer But Arth’s time was up after the ’05 season (which ended with the Steelers upsetting the Colts in the playoffs) It’s worth noting Arth also spent time in the old NFL Europe spending his springs and summers before camp opened up he was a member of the Scottish Claymores – a tremendous team name – and in 2005 he threw two touchdowns and four interceptions while seeing only a fraction of playing time He did throw a 95-yard TD pass in 2005 with the Sea Devils a clip I regretfully have been unable to find but here’s his other touchdown as a Claymore Someone please bring this back. British commentators for a football game. This is what the game needs. And for anyone wondering why and how I found a clip of J.T. O’Sullivan playing for Frankfurt, I was scouring the internet for clips of Arth Dungy gave Arth the chance to join the Colts’ coaching staff as a quality control coach in 2005 not entertaining the idea of being a coach with a desire to keep playing the game instead Arth signed with the Green Bay Packers in March of 2006 but was released right before training camp He spent the next few years in other professional leagues before realizing he needed to move on with life’s work Married to his high school sweetheart (they’ve now been together for over 30 years) he already had two kids and needed to find a way to provide for his family Personable and well-liked, he initially talked to a company called Ideastream Products, who said they didn’t have a job opening but liked him enough to offer him the chance to become a trainee. He did that for a bit, in addition to briefly running the Tom Arth Cleveland Passing Academy before calling up someone who worked at John Carroll to see if there were any other job openings A coaching position at his alma mater opened up and he became the school’s co-offensive coordinator and lead recruiter in 2010 he was named John Carroll’s head coach But he found the same success coaching as he did playing It was that 2016 season that became his and the school’s most memorable Not only did John Carroll make it to the semifinals they upset powerhouse Mount Union 31-28 during the regular season snapping their rival’s 112-game win streak and winning the conference championship That success got him on the radar of larger schools UT-Chattanooga hired him to the FCS level for the 2017 season After posting a losing record his first year That was enough to reach the FBS coaching ranks a surprise hire by the Akron Zips for their job at the age of 37 meaning he was a head coach at three different colleges before his 40th birthday Recommending him for the Akron job was two people. Longtime offensive line coach Howard Mudd, who certainly didn’t offer many coaching recommendations, and Peyton Manning, who called up the Zips’ Athletic Director Larry Williams to offer an honest assessment of Arth.  I’ve never seen Tom in a head coaching role all I call tell you is what a quality person he is He’s been around lots of different levels of football and I think a lot of those things will serve him well Arth couldn’t turn the program around before going 1-5 in a COVID-shortened 2020 season He went 2-7 midway through the 2021 year before being fired with three games left in the season following a loss to Ball State Arth went 3-24 as the Zips’ head coach Two of his wins came against Bowling Green Arth was hired by the Chargers, reuniting with his former DC Brandon Staley, in 2022 as the team’s new Passing Game Coordinator. It was a job he considered taking in 2021 before deciding to remain at Akron until getting fired In an interview with the Chargers’ website Arth didn’t elaborate much on what the role meant “Really just being a support element for all of our coaches, particularly on the offensive side of the ball,” he said in June of 2023. “Certainly anywhere that I can lend my experience or contribute in any way is what I try to do.” He spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Chargers before being hired by Pittsburgh The chance to return near to his home of Cleveland was a selling point Arth has continually expressed how important family is “Every day he would preach that when it’s time to play football, it’s time to play, but that it’s important to be a student and a gentleman because there always is someone watching you,” John Carroll QB Anthony Moeglin told The Columbus Dispatch in 2017. “You have to be at your best all the time in everything you do He said we’re all going to have jobs someday and have families someday.” He’s also shown outside-the-box thinking as a head coach. At John Carroll, he once brought in an etiquette coach and yoga teacher, the former to teach his players how to act at a fancy dinner.  “I still remember her saying … ‘slice . slice … pierce’ when cutting up food,” laughed Arth As far as Arth, the coach, I wish I had clinic tape to break down like I came across for Arthur Smith. Not having as much luck here While Arth has done many interviews as a head coach they don’t get into coaching philosophy Most of his press conferences have sounded fine but are generally coach-speak and things all coaches say and you don’t give too much specific info away when you’re the head coach Arth did have one interesting comment about committing to the game “To want something requires nothing,” he said In an assortment of clips as the head coach at Akron once stressing the importance of getting more depth than width on rollouts to avoid immediate pressure and to buy time to get the ball off he focused on quarterbacks having a wide enough base to throw from In a 2016 interview with the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Arth expanded a little more on his style, though it’s in line with many other coaches it’s going to be very dependent on the players – what they do well what they can be successful at,” Arth said “There’s a lot of versatility built into the scheme It’s not like we’re changing from one week to the next; we just have it built in “We have huge installs that come at you fast and we’re smart enough to know when to pare back into what we need to.” I’ll try to keep learning more over the coming weeks and months before we hear from him But this is a good primer on Arth’s background and a little bit about his coaching viewpoints as a foundation to evaluate him going forward Additionally, if you'd like to donate above and beyond the ad-free option, you can donate via PayPal as well. MY. GOODNESS.Zach Gibson nearly scored the game-tying touchdown before he FUMBLED IT. Ball State has possession. pic.twitter.com/6b6T64Mmjo the worry with MAC hires is that their success will be upended when a Big Ten school scoops them up three to four years later but that has not been the case at Akron.  all six Zips head coaches have left Akron with a losing record and a pink slip That list includes former Notre Dame head coach Gerry Faust former Ohio State assistant and successful Ohio high school coach Lee Owens former Pitt offensive coordinator JD Brookhart longtime head coach Terry Bowden (now in the midst of a turnaround job at ULM) and Now in their 30th season of MAC membership Akron has won the conference one time and appeared in three bowl games who was let go following a 4-8 season in 2018.  Bruce Feldman was among the first to share the news Located in wins in 2021 is relieved of duties with two years remaining on his contract After suffering a 31-25 loss to Ball State under the Tuesday night lights which ended with a potential game-tying touchdown instead turning into a game-ending fumble the University of Akron announced a change in leadership on Thursday morning Current inside linebackers coach and associate head coach Oscar Rodriguez Jr. who came with Arth from UT-Chattanooga in 2019 will be the interim head coach over the remainder of the 2021 season “We appreciate Coach Tom Arth’s work on behalf of our student-athletes and coaches and we wish him well moving forward,” University of Akron athletic director Charles Guthrie said via press release regarding the move who was originally hired on in 2019 following the departure of Terry Bowden with only two wins against FBS competition— both against BGSU whose coaching career featured great success at nearby Division III John Carroll was expected to bring back a local flair to the Zips program after Bowden’s dependence on JUCO transfers and Southern-based recruiting pipelines with Akron now rostering 53 players from the Buckeye State Offensive line play regressed mightily under Arth DJ Irons and Zach Gibson all playing more or less in rotation due to injuries with several players at key positions transferring out throughout Arth’s tenure What few bright spots remained are either underutilized due to inefficiency (such as WR Konata Mumpfield) or dismissed for team violations (such as 2020 breakout HB Teon Dollard.) as the Zips are amongst the worst teams in the country as well currently ranked 112th in total defense (446.4 yards per game) and 125th in scoring defense (38 points per game) while also allowing 45 opposing touchdowns The defense never improved as time went on despite having relatively similar personnel on a yearly basis which put the Zips in a lot of vulnerable positions— including against FCS competition Arth will be owed a buyout of $637,500 as part of his contract, per the Akron Beacon-Journal an amount commensurate with his 75 percent of his annual salary over the duration of his remaining contract The search for a new head coach will begin effective immediately After being stung by a snake’s viperous vowel Ventura County champion speller Arth Dalsania helped serve up an antidote Monday The eighth-grader from CAPE Charter School in Camarillo survived 10 rounds at the Scripps National Spelling Bee last week before being nipped by the Asian snake known as a “katuka.” He made it to the nationally televised finals on Thursday and finished eighth among the country’s best 231 spellers – one of the highest Ventura County finishes ever in the iconic bee Dalsania and his family treated classmates teachers and all of CAPE School to soft-serve ice cream delivered to the Camarillo campus “It’s a way to say thank you to all my friends for all their support,” said Arth (pronounced earth) Competing in the bee for the second time in three years the 14-year-old from Camarillo went on an impressive run in National Harbor He nailed 10 words – “catarrh,” “sarcophagus” “perinatal,” “mythologem,” “cavort,” “congelifraction,” “quiescent,” “anabibazon,” “papoula” and “brachypterous.” mother Khushbu Dalsania and 11-year-old sister Aarna Dalsania cheered in person as Arth spelled his way to the 11-person finals staff from CAPE and others followed the proceedings via watch parties sponsored in the bee by SAGE Publishing of Thousand Oaks said he figured out early focusing on the television cameras was a mistake The same goes with the nerves that made his legs shake a moment before approaching the speller’s microphone I’m not really nervous because you’re locked in,” he said It was the “u” that sounds like “uh” in “katuka” that ended his competition Arth guessed wrong and spelled it “kataka.” Still, he made it further than he expected, competing against spellers who have been studying much of their lives. Arth’s preparations ramped up in the sixth-grade for the 2021 national bee. Competing virtually, he finished tied for 43rd place. This year's bee was won by eighth-grader Dev Shah of Largo Now Arth is looking forward to August and his next challenge: Freshman class at Newbury Park High School The lessons he learned in spelling will likely help “The great thing about spelling is the competition with others is second to the competition with yourself,” he said “It’s just focus on your word and do your best.” Tom Kisken covers health care and other news for the Ventura County Star. Reach him at tom.kisken@vcstar.com or 805-437-0255 SUPPORT LOCAL JOURNALISM: To see more stories like this, subscribe here.
