But it also has restaurants with six collective Michelin stars
doctors who service the Swiss Olympic team

including the one promising to refresh guests' intestinal flora
Podcasts with names like Butts & Guts (hosted by a Cleveland Clinic colorectal surgeon) and Take a Stool (by an at-home gut-health supplement company) have proliferated
much remains unknown about the causes of and cures for our many digestive woes
I was more than ready for a gastrointestinal intervention
I received a package with a sample collection kit and a prepaid label addressed to a high-tech lab in Zurich
by the time the resort's Mercedes dropped me outside the lobby
the staff had already carefully considered my gut and how to best serve its flora

Pancreatic elastase—technically fine—could be higher

One thing I got a lot of was tea made with yarrow
an astringent herb used by ancient Greeks to treat battle wounds
Some guests get yarrow compresses administered by on-site physiotherapists
or “internal organs chi massage,” a Taoist therapy that targets the navel
The practitioner worked her elbow into my abs
“There is no such thing as normal.” I'd had an unsanctioned protein bar in the elevator ride down
Overall my organs were emitting a “smooth energy,” she told me
though they did have “a bit of a wall up.” She suggested letting go: “Deep surrender is maybe a topic for you.”
The last few days were for food-intolerance tests
which included consuming a mango meant to spike fructose and yogurt to probe lactose
Sometimes Ricke is surprised by what she finds
She mentioned a client who had been inexplicably fainting
Ricke thought she might be reactive to steak and prescribed her a mammal-free diet
I left with 40 sachets of probiotic powder and a list of suggestions
like trying cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and crushing my own linseeds for colon health
plus Ricke's WhatsApp info for follow-up calls
I looked back at the huge neon sign on the resort's roof burning bright against the mountains: Everything is going to be alright

The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz focuses on more than just relaxation and culinary experiences to offer its guests an unforgettable experience
Fast Internet access and its own applications for hotel services are just as much a part of this today
In close cooperation with CANCOM Switzerland
the hotel's old network was replaced by a state-of-the-art network infrastructure with Wi-Fi 6 technology
The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in the picturesque municipality of Bad Ragaz in the canton of St
various facilities for events and a five-star service – all promise guests an unforgettable experience
But the Grand Resort also wants to ensure that guests are not missing anything from a technical perspective
No guest should have to forgo Internet access or telephone calls
A stable Internet connection is also required throughout the Grand Resort for the hotel's own "myStay" app
This was enough for a reason to replace the old network with a modern and easy-to-use solution
"Thanks to Huawei's new network solution and the uncomplicated collaboration with CANCOM Switzerland
the network can now be adapted easily to the individual wishes of our guests
Things that we previously had to have done for us by an external partner can now be solved ourselves in just a few simple steps."
Head of Infrastructure and Security at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
"We have set ourselves the goal of providing our guests with an excellent Wi-Fi network at all locations and around the clock
we therefore decided to modernise the existing network infrastructure," explains Reto Schwengeler
The size of a Grand Resort in Bad Ragaz is a challenge that should not be underestimated
"Since guests frequently have individual wishes - for example
their own network within the Grand Resort network - an infrastructure that is easy to configure and with flexible handling was required," Reto Schwengeler continues
"If guests brought their own IT equipment or needed their own separate network
adjustments like these required a lot of effort and we were dependent on external support," says Schwengeler
modern solution was required for the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
The Grand Resort received various recommendations from CANCOM Switzerland AG
which ultimately impressed the Grand Resort with the network solution from Huawei
The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz relies on Huawei's state-of-the-art network solution in order to be able to easily meet the technical requirements of its guests in the future
500 access points and firewalls were implemented on the Grand Resort's premises - after careful analysis of the building plans by CANCOM Switzerland
The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz also installed two high-performance Wi-Fi controllers and highly functional management servers to manage the entire network
The modern software-defined approach of the Huawei network enables the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz - unlike the old solution - to respond independently and flexibly to the widest range of guest wishes
it is no longer necessary to configure each individual device on the Grand Resort's premises manually
95 percent of the infrastructure can be configured quickly and easily using the central controller
And in the event of outages and interruptions
network problems can be identified and resolved quickly thanks to the efficient troubleshooting system
To ensure that guests on the premises of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz enjoy a stable Internet connection
CANCOM Switzerland chose Wi-Fi 6 technology – one of the most modern Wi-Fi generation on the market
The introduction of Wi-Fi 6 technology enables fast Internet and smooth communication for the guests at the Grand Resort
Thanks to state-of-the-art Wi-Fi technology
the Grand Resort can also make guests' stay even more pleasant - for example with checkout terminals
To ensure that the connection is not only fast and stable
CANCOM Switzerland also integrated firewalls from Palo Alto into the Huawei network
The migration to a completely new network is a real challenge - especially for a company like the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz with the switch from a traditional to a software-defined network
The Grand Resort is a business that has to run around the clock seven days a week
we therefore had to find solutions time and again in order to be able to ensure the operation of the Grad Resort at all times," explains Simon Häni
Member of the Management Board and Head of System Integration at CANCOM Switzerland
the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz can focus on what matters: its visitors on site
Guests benefit from a modern and secure network that gives them secure and fast Wi-Fi access across all locations and around the clock
Thanks to the clear iMaster management solution
the IT team at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz can easily adapt the network to the individual needs and wishes of its guests
Head of Infrastructure and Security at the Grand Resort
praises the open and stimulating exchange with CANCOM Switzerland
"The experts at CANCOM Switzerland not only understood our needs
but were also innovative and helped us to progress with the right questions
They questioned the existing situation and ensured that our problems were really solved
we were able to complete the project successfully within a very short time," says Schwengeler enthusiastically
And what do the guests say about the new network
we received complaints about the network on almost a weekly basis
We don't get any now," says Schwengeler with a wink
The result speaks for itself and shows that the combination of Huawei and CANCOM Switzerland was the right decision
• Grand Resort Bad Ragaz• Project year 2022• Huawei's new network infrastructure• State-of-the-art Wi-Fi 6 technology• Centralised management with a software-defined approach
• Modern Wi-Fi network at all locations of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz• Network can be individually adapted to the needs of guests• Administration of the network via graphical user interface• Wireless network with Wi-Fi 6 technology• Protected around the clock with Palo Alto firewalls

Rejuvenation awaits at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in Switzerland
It’s all too easy to lose yourself at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
built in 1868 in the spa town of Bad Ragaz
in the foothills of the Swiss Alps and close to the border with Liechtenstein.
What is today the elegant Grand Hotel Quellenhof
but it has been joined by the boutique Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz and Hotel Palais Bad Ragaz.
dating to the 18th century when the first bath houses were established by the local abbots – cleanliness being next to godliness and all that
All three buildings are interconnected by winding corridors and courtyards and each have their own distinct character.

leading to a balcony on which to sit with a book and a glass of the local sauvignon blanc
some tending towards the mind-bendingly surreal and all part of losing yourself.
The resort’s owners are art collectors and this summer the hotel is playing host to some of the artworks at the ninth Swiss Triennial of Sculpture
which comes with the slightly tortured name
But it is the spas you come for – both of them
The resort is home to the public baths of varying water temperatures and an array of saunas.
this is Switzerland and here they do not mess around when it comes to baking oneself.
you can leave your swimming costume at the door
A stay at Bad Ragaz is all about peeling back the layers and getting back to the basics of a healthy mind
Just note the baths are now closed for maintenance work until early October
It has two thermal water pools – one with jets for wallowing and one for swimming
there is a third pool outside in the grounds
which is open in the warmer months.)
There is a sauna reserved for swimming costumes
the best facilities are in the “textile-free” area
after melting away your troubles in the pair of saunas and two steam rooms

I enjoyed the Tamina Flow Massage – the signature treatment
is a composite of all the therapists’ favourite techniques
Stay awhile and the hotel will put together a “NEWYOU Method” plan to get your lifestyle back on track
My therapist advised that I should try to get out from behind my desk more often
The hotel’s seven restaurants collectively boast a constellation of Michelin stars
I particularly enjoyed the restaurant Zollstube
is a Swiss-German version of those fuzzy concepts of cosiness and wellbeing that the Scandinavians use to sell us books.

where I had a very nice pan-fried pike perch fillet in XO sauce
served with a herb salad and yellow verbena

Water sommeliers are on hand to advise on which to drink with your food and wine
and – as I learnt at a really quite interesting water tasting – the minerality and acidity do make a difference.
and eating good food leaves you with a spring in your step
I made the short stroll down to the River Alpenrhein
It really is the best place to lose yourself

04:13am EDTShareSaveCommentOn the train from Zurich to Bad Ragaz
a charming mountain town in eastern Switzerland
you’ll pass mirror-like lakes so still that it’s hard to tell the difference between the sky and the water
their reflection in the water creating a topsy-turvy landscape
Mountain peaks turn upside down and the cobalt of autumnal skies merges into the ice blue of the lake’s surface
Grand Hotel Quellenhof at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is one of four accommodation options
a main employer for the area and one of the Europe’s leading health resorts
The sprawling facility is in fact three hotels in one: The Grand Hotel Quellenhof & Spa Suites; the Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz and the Palais Bad Ragaz—each with their own distinct style
where guests can also check into state-of-the-art spa suites as a fourth accommodation option
Palais Bad Ragaz is one of four accommodation options
which was set here and put the region “on the map.” In fact
you can visit the Heidi house—which is said to be the inspiration for the main character’s home—and follow Heidi trails that take you past some of the locations mentioned in the book
Views from the resort stretch across Heidiland
Dating back many years before Heidi was imagined
Bad Ragaz was actually already famous due to its thermal springs in the nearby Tamina Gorge
These were stumbled upon in 1240 by huntsmen from Pfäfers Abbey
a Benedictine monastery perched in the mountains
The Benedictine monks discovered that the naturally hot water gushing from the rocks at 36.5°C had certain health benefits
and pilgrims came to be lowered on ropes and submerged in the water
the ropes had been replaced with wooden bath houses
the water was being channeled by wooden pipes four kilometers to the first bathhouse at the Abbot’s Building
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is one of the oldest spa retreats in the world with the first property
pilgrims of a different kind—albeit still in search of health benefits—visit the Tamina Therme baths
a lavish area found at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz (open to the public)
to sit in a series of indoor and outdoor pools of varying temperatures
Having acquired the exclusive rights to utilize the water from the hot springs (an agreement which remains in place today)
Simon built the hotel around Helena Bath—a thermal pool that he designed
The bath attracted the world’s elite travelers to take advantage of the naturally hot waters
said to help with physical and mental ailments
thermal water has remained the foundation of the sprawling spa’s modern-day offering
and it’s still being pumped directly into the hotel’s spa
The special mineral composition and the temperature of 36.5°C is said to trigger positive reactions throughout the body
stimulate the metabolism and blood circulation and improves heart function
The thermal water also reportedly has a soothing effect on rheumatic conditions and nervous system diseases
You can enjoy it in a series of special pools
you’ll also find thermal water coming out of your taps and showers
While hotel guests are free to use the facilities at the Tamina Therme village
they also have the benefit of the hotels’ separate luxury facilities
including a baroque pool—the original Helena Bath
fashioned on a regal Russian banya—as well as saunas
with some 70+ resident doctors and experts
(Don’t be surprised to see Olympic athletes or members of global royal families padding around in their dressing gowns.)
the options are also extensive—a must-try is the signature Tamina Flow Massage
which uses a massage technique that echoes the movement of water
made up of personalized packages that include the latest preventative and complementary medical therapies
nutritionists and dietary chefs—plan a menu of therapies that are tailored to each person
depending on their needs and aims (as well as special menus within the restaurants)
Verve celebrates seasonal and local produce
don’t expect to leave Grand Resort Bad Ragaz feeling hungry
but the elevated culinary offering across seven restaurants is top-tier and peppered with Michelin stars
Even if you are following a prescribed diet (guests can opt for the special Cuisine Équilibrée menu
where all three courses add up to fewer than 600 calories)
sees chef Wassmer redefine Swiss Alpine cuisine
it’s all about sustainable and seasonal ingredients turned up a notch
Freshly baked breads arrive warm from the oven
or perhaps a small bowl of creamy barley risotto from the Albula Valley—it comes topped with wild Boletus mushrooms
a standout dish is the bouillabaisse with crispy fish balls and tarragon prawns
or the glazed beetroot with a cassis jus and blackberries
vegetarian dishes are the star of the show at Verve
as are an imaginative range of non-alcoholic and low-alcoholic drinks—try the Verd
for a refreshing alternative to a cocktail
dining at the two-Michelin-starred Igniv restaurant is a theatrical experience
much like taking in a fairytale unfolding from the plates
The innovative concept is based around sharing plates
offering a twist on traditional fine dining
Chef Joël Ellenberger’s signature dishes are a seemingly endless series of culinary treats
with vibrant colors and garnished with dainty herbs and flowers
such as “Egg Royale,” served in an eggshell
such as avocado and wasabi or langoustine and carrot—their simple names belying the complexity and beauty of each
there is a combination of four dishes—from potato-tomato to pork-chimichurri—delicious gourmet inventions which are not only bursting with flavor
such as a tonka bean soufflé and sea buckthorn tartlet
the final flourish comes with a visit to the “candy store” as you depart the restaurant
It’s a wall of sweet treats from which you can fill a box of saccharine delights
from sugar-dusted jellies to mini madeleines
It really does leave you on a (sugar-fueled) high
If you stay at the recently-renovated Grand Hotel Quellenhof (its facelift in 2019
and it still feels spanking new) you’ll wake up in a luxury bubble
cloud-like pillows and lavish bathrooms–stocked with pots of face cream and body lotion made with thermal water and where the glossy walls feature shadowy illustrations of the nearby Tamina Gorge—feel incredibly pampering
velvet furniture and oversized headboards add to the luxe feel
you will be stopped in your tracks by a 16-meter-high chandelier—crafted by Czech glassblowers Sans Souci Lighting—that has 2,500 blue and white glass baubles designed to replicate a cascading waterfall
Rooms have a richly pampering decor at Quellenhof
There’s homemade granola and local yogurts
whipped omelettes with chives and mountain bread and cheese
“healthy eating” takes the form of nourishment at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
so everything feels good for the soul—including the afternoon cake and tea counter found in the hotel’s lobby
'Laura non c'é’ by Bruno Walpoth
“Everything Is Going To Be Alright,” it proclaims—a nod toward the wellness philosophy that Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has long been dedicated to
the hotel grounds are a feast for the eyes in the form of an open-air art park
filled with groundbreaking sculptures—such as “Strandläufer” by Christel Lechne and “Laura non c'é” by Bruno Walpoth
you come across more and more pieces that surprise and delight you
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has not strayed far from championing the importance of water as its foundation
who offers a water tasting experience at the Aqua Bar
It gives you the chance to discern between thermal
mineral and spring waters—there are some 30 varieties of water on offer at the resort
After a day spent submerged in hot tubs and pools
you emerge wrinkly-fingered and peachy-smooth
healing therapies are the oldest and the simplest

On October 9, 2024, The MICHELIN Guide revealed the first One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Switzerland
Earning One Key (46 properties) or Two Keys (32 properties) is special enough

the MICHELIN Guide's highest hotel honor.

Switzerland is often considered to be the ultimate luxury winter wonderland destination. But, as my visit occurred during late summer, it seemed fitting to end my journey with one of Switzerland’s other big draws: a retreat at a fabled spa resort. While Interlaken and Lucerne are synonymous with glamorous alpine wellness retreats
the municipality of Bad Ragaz was also recommended to me
especially due to its convenient proximity to Zurich Airport (about an hourlong drive)
Bad Ragaz may not be as familiar to American spa enthusiasts
but the area is a well-kept secret among savvy Zurich locals who want to avoid the international crowds in Lucerne
Benedictine monks were the first to discover the soothing properties of the area’s mineral-rich hot springs
As my Swiss Rail train pulled into the Bad Ragaz station
I could also see why Zurich families love the town
Its storybook setting provided the inspiration behind “Heidi,” the classic children’s novel by author Johanna Spyri
the drive into Grand Resort Bad Ragaz’s main road was like witnessing an open treasure chest
revealing whimsical landscaping and modern sculptures
followed by a cluster of freestanding hotels including The Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz
Palais Ragaz (a Relais & Chateaux property dating to 1840)
which recently merged with Clinics of Valens
The collaboration expands an already impressive roster of cosmetic
dermatological and medical services to include neurological
internal-oncological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation
After reopening in July 2019 after an approximately $45.5 million renovation
Grand Hotel Quellenhof & Spa Suites presents itself as the Dom Perignon of the resort’s properties
down to bubble-like art glass light fixtures outlining its lobby’s central spiral staircase
in addition to its own boutique spa and Tamina Therme — the public baths that are the jewel of the entire complex
98 opulently decorated rooms and suites make up the accommodations at Grand Hotel Quellenhof
I was assigned a fire-motif junior suite with plush furnishings and a sumptuous bathroom with natural stone
the casual dining venue by Michelin-starred chef Sven Wassmer
simply plated dishes and low-alcohol cocktails are surprisingly complex
My next order of business was to bask in the nearly 98-degree Fahrenheit
magnesium-rich waters in the some 14,000-square-foot Tamina Therme — open free of charge to all resort guests and accessible by outdoor garden paths
The public facility is a wonderland of mineral pools
For clients looking for a more personalized hot springs immersion
Tamina Therme recently added the rustic-chic Ragaz Sauna Village
a resort-within-a-resort concept that offers an innovative mineral infusion ritual of salt containing magnesium
For those uncomfortable with the main sauna’s required nudity policy
there is also a “textile” sauna where traditional swim attire is permitted
A Bad Ragaz vacation also can be rounded out with on-site cultural events
a chalet-inspired Children’s Villa and more
the home of the real-life “Heidi” can be reached via a hike (as Heidi herself did) or by bicycle or car
signature restaurant Memories not only provided a stunning meal in a golden setting
but also demonstrated how Wassmer managed to earn multiple Michelin stars by age 33
Watching the chef and his team sculpt every course through a “leaf to tip” philosophy — while sommelier wife Amanda Wassmer-Bulgin paired the courses with Swiss wines — was a visual feast
from a hay-based kombucha palate cleanser to a salad arranged as a bouquet of micro herbs
Wassmer explained that everything I tasted was inspired by his childhood memories
the dishes also seemed to reflect the future of Swiss cuisine and the age-old soils and springs that beget such rich tasting vegetables and herbs — an approach that epitomizes Bad Ragaz as a whole

Switzerland is famed for being downright idyllic
It’s got bucolic green spaces (Swiss Plateau); regal peaks (Swiss Alps and Jura mountains); and glacier-fed
cerulean-blue lakes—not to mention magnificent waterfalls
Its towns and villages are the physical embodiment of the most charming fairytale books
And residents enjoy a halcyon sense of bliss
It’s everything you’ve heard and more
we urge you to explore a part you’ve probably never heard of—a small municipality some Swiss natives haven’t even heard of: Bad Ragaz
Bad Ragaz is situated in eastern Switzerland, just a stone’s throw away from Liechtenstein, sandwiched between Austria and Switzerland. It’s only about nine square miles, with a population teetering on the verge of 6,000, and it’s home to a famed natural hot spring and the five-star Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
as well as up to 50 percent off some mountain excursions and free entrance to over 500 museums

04:53pm EDTShareSaveThis article is more than 6 years old.Bad Ragaz
It’s mostly famous for its „Ragazer thermal water“ which is a special kind of H2O
Discovered for the first time 777 years ago
this healing water continues to flow from the mountain to this day
aids in the healing of a variety of ailments
It is also the source of the famous „Tamina Therme“ spring water spa and the health & wellbeing concept of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
When it comes to convalescing and staying healthy
water has always played a vital role. The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz and its Medical Center Clinic Bad Ragaz has made it its mission not only to use the healing powers of the local spring water for wellness and health purposes
but also to educate guests about the importance of and the differences between the water we drink on a daily basis
The contemporary water bar is run by two water sommeliers and contains a diverse choice of different waters - from Evian to San Pellegrino
I met with sommelier Irina Taculina at the Water Bar for my first ever water tasting
Water Sommeliere at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz's Water Bar
how did the idea come up of having a water bar at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
Our own spring in the Tamina Gorge is why we’re here at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz: In 1242 some monks from Pfäfers Abbey discovered a spring in the Tamina Gorge while out hunting
The healing powers of the spring water were praised by the physician Paracelsus in 1535
His knowledge provided the foundation for healing with fluoride rich acratothermal waters
Paracelsus’ seal of approval on the 36.5°C warm water drew many visitors to the spring
stays at health resorts became increasingly fashionable
especially when combined with social occasions
This led to further expansion of the estate at Ragaz and the building of a road leading to the gorge
further work completed allowed the diversion of the thermal water as far as the village of Ragaz
Everything relates to water here at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
That’s why it made sense to us to create a water bar – and to go «back to the roots»
instead of having a regular bar – as was actually planned in the first place
Water plays an important role in our everyday lives and we strongly believe that it has a healing effect
The water bar is located within our Spa Tower at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
guests draw thermal water to their rooms just by turning the tap
swim in it or have water therapy using the healing effects of the spring
with our water bar we wanted to highlight the fact that you can actually also drink the thermal water
we added more than 25 other waters to the bar
"Tamina Gorge and Spring" at Bad Ragaz
It’s a neat idea to have a pure water bar within a hotel – and to have two trained water sommeliers
we display the variety of water brands to highlight the different attributes of each in terms of minerals and salt content
We want to educate our guests about the world of healthy water
We currently offer over 26 different waters from all around the world and continuously look out for new sources we can present
Our focus at the water bar definitely lies on Swiss waters: our newest «member» is «Piz Sardona» from the Mels municipality
This producers’ goal is to be sustainable and reduce CO2
They educate their clients explaining that 5% of all fresh water supplies within Europe actually come from Switzerland
It’s more than enough to supply every Swiss household
the Swiss import 40% of their drinking water from abroad
That’s actually absurd as we are located right next to the spring
this water offers different mineral-levels (1-4)
the «Beneva Black Water» which contains active carbon
It is a true detox-water for the purification of your body and supports weight loss
What makes the difference in your selection of waters
You can differentiate between four basic tastes: sweet
The sensorial relevant minerals for a water tasting are sodium (Na)
magnesium (Mg) und iron (Fe) but also chloride (Cl)
sulfate (SO4) and hydrogen carbonate (HCO3)
The waters which are the easiest to taste are medium mineralized waters (500 – 1.500mg/l) and high mineralized waters (>1.500mg/l)
since these reveal the minerals quite prominently
Lower mineralized waters (<500mg/l) almost always have a bitter taste which you can detect in your whole mouth
A tasting with still water is easier because the carbonic acid often covers up the taste of the water
we like to show guests the whole range of different waters
And most of our guests who are visiting one of our water tastings are surprised that they can actually taste a difference
How did you choose those different waters
Our selection of waters reflects the variety of our Wellbeing & Medical Health Resort in general
We want the waters to match our dedication to health
we always ask ourselves before choosing a new water: is it a good match with our portfolio
And also: Does it create some sort of excitement
How much water should a person drink - and what water should be drunk and when
The human body consists of 50 – 70 % water
Dehydration leads to serious health issues and can creep up on our us if we are not careful
Water has three main purposes in the body:
-It keeps the substances we process liquid and transports them
It is important to drink sufficiently and evenly throughout the day because otherwise bodily functions would be limited and mental performance could decrease
Everybody should drink at least 1,5l/day or even better 30ml/kg bodyweight
The amount of water a person ordinarily consumes is about 1200 ml daily
Another part of overall water intake comes from foods with a high-water content (900 ml)
in summer water loss through sweating is elevated
It is so important to keep replacing this and be mindful that even more water vanishes when we exercise or move around in hot climates
Magnesium-containing water has more than 50 mg / l (daily requirement about 375 mg)
There is an increased need for to keep magnesium levels up if pursuing sweat-inducing activity
It also helps with processing protein-rich food and alcohol
Magnesium plays an important role in neuromuscular transmission and muscle contraction
It regulates the stability and excitability of the cell membranes as well as the autonomic nervous system and the heart
Magnesium deficiency can cause muscle problems such as cramping and tension
There is also the risk of cardiac arrhythmias
Calcium-containing water contains more than 150 mg / l (daily requirement about 800mg)
people with lactose intolerance and also keeps teeth and bones stable (prevents osteoporosis)
Calcium also plays an important role in blood clotting
in the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles
in the stabilization of the heartbeat and in the activation of hormones and enzymes
Saline and especially animal egg white increase the calcium excretion via the kidneys
A very meaty diet can therefore lead to calcium deficiency
Sodium-containing mineral water contains more than 200 mg / l (daily requirement about 550 mg)
Sodium plays an important role in muscle stimulation and blood pressure regulation
a deficiency can lead to cardiovascular problems
dizziness and cramps are other possible symptoms
Mineral water with the indication "suitable for a low-sodium diet" contains less than 20 mg / l
Sulfate-containing water contains more than 200 mg / l (there is no recommendation for daily requirements)
It gently boosts digestion and promotes bile flow
sulfates are involved in the construction of proteins and in the development of cartilage substance and contribute to the firmness of skin and hair
Hydrogen carbonated water contains more than 600 mg / l
It neutralizes the gastric acid and brings the acid-base balance back into balance
It is a good balance with protein-rich diet and ensures a healthy metabolism in the blood
balances heartburn and irritable stomach and prevents inflammation in the urinary tract and urinary stones
What would a perfectly hydrated day look like
It is important to drink sufficiently and evenly throughout the day (not only in case of fluid loss!)
our bodily functions would be limited and our mental performance would decrease
Everybody should drink at least 1,5l per day or even better 30ml per kg bodyweight
A fluid loss of 1-2% of body weight already restricts mental performance by 4-8%
This means that the short-term memory deteriorates
we act more slowly and lose out on flexibility
we need to be aware of the complicated interactions within our bodies - blood that’s too thick increases the risk of heart attack and stroke or even sudden pain

I've always been independent and have been traveling alone from the UK to India to visit family since I was 16
But there was something about spending all my time alone that seemed like it would be boring or even uncomfortable
It's not lost on me that traveling alone as a female opens you up to certain vulnerabilities and safety concerns
So I ended up opting for a luxury spa and wellness hotel in Switzerland as I could dip my toe in the solo traveling pool
I wouldn't have to leave the confines of the resort
I chose the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
a luxury five-star wellness hotel in Bad Ragaz
Not only because the thought of cancellations
and missed flights on a trip with multiple legs stressed me out
but I had no idea what to expect when it came to spending all my time alone
Switzerland has always been at the top of my travel list since I'm an avid Bollywood movie fan and Switzerland's aesthetics have been heavily featured in the films coming out of India
I decided on a wellness resort in Bad Ragaz
a Swiss town close to the border of Liechtenstein
to ease myself into the world of solo travel
I've had a lot of experience flying alone since I was young
I hadn't ever traveled on trains in Europe before and was surprised at how well-organized and easy-to-understand the trains were in Switzerland
I took a short connecting train to the main station in the city center and then changed trains to Bad Ragaz
The cost of the journey was around £30 each way
The train system in the UK doesn't run as smoothly in my experience. There are regular delays and strikes
a four-hour journey from Glasgow to London has taken me over 10 hours
Once I was settled on the train to Bad Ragaz
I sat next to the window to take in the views
the scenery was immaculate and I wasn't the only passenger taking pictures out of the window
I don't think the term "pictures don't do it justice" made sense to me until then
The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is a five-star resort
though rooms start from around $600 per night
Where it trumps similar luxury retreats is that you can stay for as little or as long as you'd like with no minimum stay
Being a wellness retreat, you can participate in wellness programs for detoxing or weight loss
though these require you to stay for a set number of days
or you can stay as a regular hotel guest as I did
It's the grandest hotel I've ever stayed in and reflects the caliber of its guests
they said it's a favorite destination of royalty and celebrities but declined to give out any names
There are other hotels in the area if it's out of budget
The resort has more than 10 restaurant and bar venues and holds six Michelin stars
a meal or drink would be well worth the visit
I'm up for going with the flow and in usual circumstances
I'd be discussing what to do with my travel companion
Not having someone else with me helped me to better understand what I like to do with my time
and I found myself not using my phone as a distraction as much as I thought I would
I carried my headphones in my pocket the whole time in case I felt awkward having a drink in the lobby alone
I'm naturally very conscious of other people's time so I'm always ready before everyone else
Traveling solo meant I could take a breath and enjoy the process of getting ready without the pressure of having someone waiting for me
the hotel had a TV in the bathroom mirror which kept me entertained
I didn't actually leave the resort until my second day
Because my focus was on looking for a resort that suited my needs
I hadn't researched the local area around it before I arrived
I went down to the hotel concierge who guided me through what famous sights I should see in the local area
I wasn't overwhelmed with options — they recommended walking around and taking in the natural beauty of Switzerland
but it was a refreshing change from my usual weekend city breaks which are usually more about making sure I hit every tourist attraction than taking my time to enjoy a new destination
One of the most beautiful things I saw was the Tamina River — I couldn't help but stop and take videos to send to my friends
Locals smiled and said hello as they walked by
and did the same when I browsed the few local boutiques in the area
I loved my solo trip for many reasons. Not only was it great to understand and get comfortable with being alone, it gave me time and space to relax.
Switzerland was a very safe, serene setting to do so in my experience, and I enjoyed it so much that I've booked another trip there, this time to Geneva.
I'd recommend the country to any solo female traveler, and would advise booking accommodation with links to the local community or staff with knowledge of the local area as this could make or break your trip.
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has for nearly 200 years been a hotspot for a diverse crowd of high rollers – from royalty to retirees
The thermal waters that flow through its vast spa and medical centre directly from the nearby Tamina Gorge
has emerged from an epic £35 million overhaul that adds a superlative sparkle to the already lavish offerings that include two golf courses and eight restaurants
warm gold and silver hues form a polished background for refreshed technology and glossy frills
both conceived by Michelin-starred chef Sven Wassmer
with the latter serving dishes using locally foraged ingredients paired with tasty non-alcoholic concoctions
but the temptation is to wallow in the thermal baths or zone out to the vibrations of a Tibetan singing bowl treatment
WEBSITE: resortragaz.ch
the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has been luring well-heeled guests with its mountain vistas and thermal waters that run through its vast spa and medical centre
Andreas Caminada (who runs a much-applauded diner at the Schauenstein Schloss Restaurant Hotel a few minutes away on the train) was persuaded to lend his 3-Michelin star power to the newly opened Igniv
a cosy room with a vaulted ceiling that seats barely 30 guests
and stone with an unusual wall paneling of wooden parquet by flooring company Listone Giordano
Caminada’s protégé and chef de cuisine Silvio Germann defies Bad Ragaz’s landlocked snowy keep with a sequence of tasting menus that are sprinkled with mackerel
The cooking is as assured and youthful as Germann – veal rib chops with mushrooms and sweetbreads
and sweet scallops are a tasty prelude to a traditional haul of Franco-German-Swiss sweets like Kaiserschmarrn and tarte tartin

Home » Geberit AquaClean in Switzerland: the Grand Hotel Quellenhof at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
The 5-star Grand Hotel Quellenhof at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in the east of Switzerland takes its inspiration from water – from a replica waterfall in the lobby and countless drinking fountains filled with thermal water
right through to the shower toilets in the bathrooms
perfectly warm tempered water is the order of the day
This has been the case right from the very beginning
when the discovery of the thermal source 778 years ago inspired the creation of a hotel at the site in which the 36.5° spring water would flow
“The thermal water is what sets us apart,” says Marco R
General Manager of the Grand Hotels at the Grand Resort
The water welcomes guests to the Grand Hotel Quellenhof from the moment they set foot in the lobby
both clear and blue in colour and all differing in size
gives the illusion of a waterfall pouring into a frothing thermal spring
from which guests can enjoy the invigorating thermal water
so that they can benefit from our revitalising water every day,” adds Zanolari
And those aren’t the only places at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz where water plays a vital role
Geberit AquaClean Sela shower toilets were installed in all 98 suites at the Grand Hotel Quellenhof
mounted in front of the wall on a Geberit Monolith sanitary module
the added value of a shower toilet is crucial
guests often have more modern appliances at home than hotels can offer them
so providing guests with something that will surprise and delight them is a challenge
“A shower toilet is one thing that hasn’t yet made its way into everybody’s homes
which makes it even more amazing for guests
They really appreciate having something different.” Personal hygiene in the bathroom – and
cleaning when using the toilet – is a sensitive topic
But that hasn’t stopped guests from talking about it
the shower toilet is seen as a particularly impressive feature
As Marco Zanolari explains: “We are always getting positive feedback on the shower toilets from our guests
They think they’re fantastic and they love the fact that using the toilets is so hygienic and clean.”

Not only were the warm, lightly mineralized waters restorative to soak in, but people from near and far afflicted by a litany of ailments (again, Middle Ages) were happy to pay local entrepreneurs—who leased the springs from the business-minded abbey—for just this privilege. From here, things followed the predictable course of any miracle cure: steep prices for a limited resource.
Nowadays, a rock tunnel leads to grottos where, following an 11-year journey through the Alps, some 8,000 litres per minute of water gush at a miraculously consistent 36.5 C—body temperature. Yet to experience its blissful caress, you needn’t even visit the source; in 1840, a wooden pipe began carrying this “blue gold” four kilometres to a hotel in the village of Ragaz, hard against the Liechtenstein border on the Rhine River. Grand Resort Bad Ragaz was born.
Leslie Anthony is a Whistler-based author, editor, biologist and bon vivant who has never met a mountain he didn’t like.
is based around the ancient tradition of bathing
The thermal waters were first discovered in the 13th century and their therapeutic and healing effects are the foundation on which the resort is built
making it the place to go for aquatic rejuvenation and re-energising
What’s so special about the water? The thermal source originates in the Tamina Gorge just a couple of miles from Bad Ragaz and was discovered in the Middle Ages
the water has been piped into the hotel and the spa area of the Grand Resort
the 36.5C water reputedly has healing and restoring properties for the body and mind
Are the resort’s rooms similarly thermal water-orientated?Yes
The best ones are the sleek spa suites – a new tower of rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and views of the mountains
All the water in the spa suites is thermal water
soaking in the whirlpool bath or washing your face in the sink you are benefitting from the unique minerals contained in the H2O
they take their drinking water very seriously
In the lobby of the spa suites there are 25 to 30 different types at the bar
but GQ recommends you try the Beneva black water with activated charcoal that helps to detox the body
The taste is reminiscent of blackberries and it is a good hangover cure
The bar at Bad Ragaz brews its own beer using the thermal water
the 36.5 Quell is the official brew of the Grand Resort and is a golden-blond beer that is crisp and delicious
And what’s the food like? There is plenty of choice in the seven restaurants
but the star of the show is the Michelin-starred Igniv
It is an indulgent mix of comfort food and gourmet cuisine
if you really are dedicated to clean eating
you can stick to the high-end healthy menu served at Cuisine Équilibrée
which has been specially developed to regulate body weight

the Tamina Therme was conceived by the Zurich-based architects as a ’forest
The white-painted columns create a richly atmospheric interior
The forest metaphor is continued towards the outside of the baths
where supports are removed (or ’felled’
The effect is a quasi-neoclassical façade that frames the surrounding landscape
the ovals are imitated by the slight curve of the vast wooden supports
which reflect off the surface of the pools
the white wood and water create a dramatic interior
both structures set within the relatively tight site on the edge of Bad Raga

It’s official – the Swiss are good at everything
We sent Pippa Park to one of Europe’s finest medical spas to discover the art of relaxation…
Sometimes you just need to run away and recharge your batteries
Well there’s no better place to treat yourself than the land synonymous with quality
Switzerland’s tag of excellence is well known the world over
even penknives – if you want something done well you give it to the Swiss
The precedence of my stay was set mere moments after landing
when I purchased a gold embossed train ticket printed on smart card
I’ve received actual wedding invitations that were less fancy
It was even laminated and presented in a pouch
Of course there are no late trains either and we set off punctually from Zurich
Zurich is pretty much the most desirable (and wealthiest) city in Europe and packs in high end shopping
so a stop off here is highly recommended if you have time
My final destination lies in eastern Switzerland
so I head off with my nose pressed against the train window
Jaw dropping scenery unfolds on my hour-long journey, with rambling green woodland giving way to enormous lakes that bounce the afternoon sunlight like a glorious, glistening mirror. Mountains rose up around me to create a backdrop worthy of The Sound of Music and presently we arrive in what is affectionately knows as the Heidiland region, for reasons relating to the novel by Johanna Spyri
Here is where you’ll find the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
Tall trees initially shield it from my view and continue to flank the long drive
which only serves to add to the impressions of grandeur
There are two reasons that Bad Ragaz is so wonderfully private
the hotel attracts high profile guests who prefer to go unnoticed
The second is down to the fact that there’s a medical centre at the hotel
offering everything from dental work and facelifts to Botox and knee operations
guests are keen to hide away from prying eyes until such time as they have fully healed
and wish to recover and relax in ultimate luxury
This makes ‘guess the operation’ a great game to play at breakfast
Wellbeing is something of a time-honoured tradition in this area
as just 15 minutes from the hotel lies the mysterious Tamina Gorge
where warm healing waters bubble up from inside the mountain
pilgrims would travel to the Abbey of Pfäfers to bathe in the thermal waters and in 1535 the doctor and philosopher Paracelsus testified to the healing powers of the springs
where you can swim in the 36.5°C thermae pool
the resort encompasses everything from a public thermal bath (presented in a ‘temple’ style setting)
267 luxury rooms ranging from ultra modern suites to traditional classics
a highly advanced medical centre and an impressive hotel spa complete with a La Prairie boutique shop
A dizzying selection of restaurants is at hand
from the culinary art at exclusive Michelin-Starred IGNIV and the light fare provided in Olives d’Or
to traditional Swiss cuisine at Zollstube and Asian sharing food and cocktails at Namun
Attention to detail was apparent throughout my time here
from the three water sommeliers (yep you read that right – three) who would choose which variant of H20 would best suit your daily needs
to the positive affirmations that appeared nightly on my pillow and the complimentary ‘sweetie buffet’ of homemade confectionary that you could take away in a goodie bag
lake sports and sunbathing or embrace the wintry months and enjoy spas
skiing and hot tubs in the fresh mountain air
If you follow the mountainous road to Pfafers you’ll find Hotel Schloss Wartenstein
a fantastic terrace restaurant with the most spectacular views of the Alps
the scenery is simply unbeatable and a special thank you goes to friendly manager Anna who puts on quite a spread
From Bad Ragaz there are numerous excursions into Heidiland
as well as the Pizol ski region where a winter sports school operates
as well as 40km of off piste slopes and an exhilarating seven-kilometer toboggan run
But in honesty you could happily spend your entire trip at this classy resort
where white fluffy robes rule and the alpine landscape steals your attention at every turn
After a leisurely swim in the outside thermae pool
a sunbathe in the luscious green grounds while gazing dreamily over the distant
snow tipped mountains and a deep tissue massage
before enjoying a crisp white wine and lunch alfresco on the terrace
where birds chirp around you in the sunshine
recuperated and ready to return to society
Bad Ragaz operates under the premise that life is precious
and you deserve to take time out form your busy life to focus on your health and wellbeing
Who are we to argue with the professionals
The hills here might not be alive but after a long weekend nestled in them

swiss firm smolenicky and partner architecture designed tamina thermal baths for the grand resort
an area in switzerland which is known for its famous natural springs
the form of the building volume emerges from the enclosing of exterior spaces
the volume of the building is stepped back and opens out the sunbathing lawn to the wooded slopes of the mountain ridge
the view extends past the existing buildings
is set on the visual axis of the cul-de-sac in order
to mark its presence in the depth of the site as a public facility
the building volume has a monumental character
in order to stand out as an institution equal to the other buildings in the resort
materially the project possesses the same apearance externally and internally
the snow-white timber battens are carried over internally as wall surfacing – so there is no definite division between the two
park-like atmosphere remains intact despite the compact manner of building
thus the resort remains characterized by its park

a super luxury Wellbeing & Medical Health Resort in the hot springs town of Bad Ragaz is a dream destination for the affluent who care to stay healthy and like a relaxed sojourn or like to celebrate special occasions or even crave for cosmetic and other medical treatments in privacy
writes Subhash Arora who spent a couple of days in the lap of luxury at the Resort and found it an excellent Resort with the natural
immesely curative spring water and ample opportunity to taste a wide range of wines and visit local wineries
Sitting in the train in Switzerland
headed for the town of Bad Ragaz for the first time (Bad is the German word for Bath and pronounced as Baathe) I was quite apprehensive
I was all alone since my friend who was to accompany me had been taken seriously ill and had to cancel at the last minute
My biggest worry was health a emergency
What if I needed emergency medical attention
The medical insurance would not help me a pip
if there were no emergency medical facilities close by and a Spa Resort
might not be equipped with emergency services
Little did I realise that the Grand Resort was safer than anywhere else I have ever stayed at
what with a well-heeled Medical Health Center having multiple in-house facilities for diagnostics
preventive care and rehabilitation at the highest level
The fact that it is known for all forms of cosmetic surgery and has dozens of specialist doctors staying at the Resort
made me relax and enjoy a few of its facilities during the very limited time
the most useful and attractive being the private indoor swimming pool with spring water at the constant temperature of 36.5°C
supplied by a pipeline directly from the Tamina thermal springs
the resort is slightly over an hour of fast drive in the Eastern part of Switzerland
The train journey was extremely comfortable with an easily negotiable change at one station
Though the Resort is only about a km from the railway station
every guest gets a Transfer from Bad Ragaz station to the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz and back
There are two hotels inter-connected from inside but visibly independent from outside
I was staying in the Grand Hotel Quellenhof which also has the Spa Suites
The close by second hotel is the Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz with a more modern look and bolder interiors
The lobby is befitting grandeur; you feel you have arrived at a royal palace from a bygone era- the elegant and classic style amplifying the look of extravagant comfort
You are offered a welcome drink-a glass of any beverage on the bar Menu
From the corner of my eyes I glanced at the Pierre Cardin Rose Brut
a trifle expensive but a gentle reminder not to look at the right side of any Menu and just soak in the luxury
The beautiful blonde bartender Barbara was very helpful and warm as she laid a bunch of bowls with delicious munchies on the table and explained the Wine List to me in detail and with patience
A tour of the property by my charming guide Andréa Fandiño followed soon after and all my fears were allayed
Grand Resort of Bad Ragaz (GRBR) is not only a Spa but also a full-fledged sports and entertainment center- 2 golf courses
a lavish cigar lounge which livens up at night
She even took me out to visit a nearby winery in the Heidiland of which I shall write in a future edition
The Spa suites that were opened in Grand Hotel a few years ago are the ultimate in luxury where the Spa is brought right to your room with the same thermal water
The contemporary styled suites include a private spa area with a steam bath
On the other end of the spectrum was also a public bath and a swimming pool with a side cafe where even outsiders are welcome to use the facilities and spend a relaxing day
Relaxing massages would be par for the course for any world class resort but the beautiful
ornate indoor thermal pool with spring water at a constant temperature of 36.5°C with Jacuzzi and several water jets at varying pressure
The village having thermal springs was discovered in 1242
Legend has it that people believed and used the thermal water for health treatments even then
I was told by the helpful and knowledgeable staff that an hour a day in the pool is enough though more won’t be harmful
Many women clients believe that they don’t need hair-conditioners after the swim and shampoo
It’s a matter of record that after two days of swimming and being under the water
most of my pains were gone and I felt relaxed
If you feel that after all the sports and swimming you deserve a hearty meal and a high level culinary experience
there are 6 restaurants where one can find Mediterranean
Swiss and international cuisine with wine lists that weigh almost more than a magnum
The variety of wine available is immense and one can have a choice of wines from throughout the world- the top Bordeaux and Burgundy wines getting their due respect and recognition-and the price
An interesting recent addition has been the opening of Restaurant IGNIV by Chef Alessandro Caminada (3 Michelin stars and 19 Gault Millau points) at the Resort
He has introduced a new concept of international food based on his international travel
Indian dishes have not yet found a place in the Menu but it is only a matter of time that the Maestro will be seduced by Indian cuisine
I was rather surprised to learn that many guests from Europe have been regular clients for years
because of its excellent medical facilities at the renowned Medical Health Center
therapy and rehabilitation of the highest order
it has over 70 doctors and therapists in the specialised fields of Check-up & Diagnostics
Gynaecology & Fertility and Complementary Medicine are but a few of the specialties of this center
Officially recognised in 2004 as a Swiss Olympic Medical Center
the sports medicine department at the MHC can be an excellent recuperation center for sports celebrities
second and the last reaction was that the Resort offers a unique opportunity for our Bollywood stars and industrialist bigwigs to come for a sojourn and go back with cosmetic surgery and positive changes in their physical attributes that could be attributed to the ‘fabulous Swiss environment’
No one would ever come to know the reality because of the privacy of the guests
A very interesting and special feature of the resort is that complete secrecy is maintained about guests’ identity
celebrities or stars walking around incognito
The staff members are forbidden to talk about any of the guests
If it were a playground for the rich and famous
one of the Indian Prime Ministers has stayed here
A well-known Mumbai industrialist has also spent a few days in the company of a friend but the names had a ring of speculation so it’s best not to mention
The proximity of the place to Davos which is 50 kms and about 50 minutes away by car and 70 minutes by train
means that many Indians and other visitors to the annual Mecca for economic and financial deliberations
have stayed here during that period when the 267 rooms and suites resort is completely full
My one regret as I was being driven in a new Porsche to the railway station of Sargans on departure by a pleasant and cultured chauffer
was that I could not take the complimentary Test drive in their popular Porsche 900 sports car-all I would have had to do would have been put the petrol in the car
I didn’t even know I was an Easy Rider on their Harley-Davidson
Of course
I could not play golf- they own two beautiful golf courses with snow capped mountains on one side and the possibility of playing with a tee-shirt as the temperature of 18-20° C was quite inviting
I did not check out the public spa which is open to outsiders due to paucity of time
the outdoor pool which was not useable as the water was a bit too chilly though one could bask in the sun in good weather
I would have loved to try my luck in the Casino
I don’t believe anyone can win in the Casino- I never have
but since I was told it was the friendliest casino in Europe
I figure I might have had less chance of losing money
I did not have time to have the Swiss fondue or raclette in one of their restaurants
I would have loved to eat at the new restaurant IGNIV where the 3-star Michelin chef from this area Andreas Caminada has let his imagination flow to curate an interesting Menu and possibly meet the Masterchef personally
although I did meet the young and passionate Executive Chef Silvio Germann who explained to me the concept of the shared dishes (not new for Indians and Chinese and perhaps the East Asians as a matter of culture)
I also met the Sommelier and Restaurant Manager Francesco Benvenuto who told me that a substantial number of guests were from town and Sunday lunch was a special family Brunch (unfortunately
I had to leave before lunch to reach Zurich and catch a flight to Barcelona)
Their wine list is extremely elaborate with around 600 labels that included top wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy
He was also happy to share that their wine sales were more in the premium wine segment
reflecting the affluent and well heeled client profile
It had been a pleasure to meet the Chef Sommelier Blanco of the hotel
who had been assigned to do a small wine tasting with me as an activity during my dinner at Olives d’Or Restaurant but ended up tasting a dozen wines including many from the local appellation of which there will be another opportunity to write about
We shared many stories and latest happenings of the wine world
He shared news about a big winery in Spain (he is half Spanish) which turned out to be correct
As I boarded the train from Sargans to Zurich
I realised that I needed to spend a full week to get familiar with and enjoy the facilities at the resort
It’s no wonder Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is considered one of the top Spa and medical health Resorts of Europe and should be able to pull a section of Indian glitterati like a magnet
If you need to discuss with your income tax advisor about how to invest to get the 80 CC benefits to save some taxes
it is a dream resort for special occasions
golf players who love the good life and those who live to eat (and love the gastronomy experience)
