[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Hunting Party Season 1 finale “Jenna Wells.”]
“I lied,” Bex (Melissa Roxburgh) admits in the final moments of The Hunting Party. She’s talking to Oliver (Nick Wechsler) as he’s dying in her arms
Roxburgh breaks down how Bex is doing at the end of the finale and shares her hopes for a Season 2
What would it have taken for her to admit it if not for him seemingly dying in her arms
but we don’t really know if she’s telling the truth or not because she plants the device that steals some information off the phone
So I think it would take another moment like that where maybe he saves her or he does something so opposite of why they ended that she kind of opens back up
Or maybe they go out in the field together and they’re tag teaming on catching one of the killers
I think it would require them having the ability to work together more closely rather than just in the command center
that requires her to rely on him a lot more
but has she had time to even process that with what’s happened
so that’s been put on pause for a moment
well I’ll just pause my killings,” so we’ve got to speed up some of that
But I laugh because at the beginning of the whole season
So I’m hoping [his recovery] this time is very speedy so that they can get back to catching everyone
I think in reality this might take a while for her to process everything that’s just happened
all the stuff that he’s been through
So I’m going to say there’s a week buffer of just recalibrating
I was going to bring up the fact of she finds out that Hassani’s wife is dead
How does she feel about how she found that out
Because they have been really bonding throughout the season
in being a profiler and understanding why people do what they do
Bex has a couple conversations with Lazarus in this episode and gets more answers than she has before
with the command center being shut down and the team’s kind of almost on their own in a way
I think that there’s mistrust that’s rebuilt through those final scenes
especially when the AG comes to the hospital
my theory is that it’s going to be a lot of the team against the higher-ups
there are a few shocking moments in the finale as we’ve talked about: Hassani’s wife being dead
I’d kind of known about the Shane aspect
I think they wound up telling us at one point
So that one didn’t surprise me in reading it in that script
but I think it was seeing the barcode on the bottom of the foot [that] kind of made me go
this is a bigger world or this is more complex than I thought it would be
And I’m really excited to see where they go
what are you hoping to explore in a second season
I’m hoping to explore maybe seeing more Lazarus
more past prisoners that have been put into roles of leadership
You don’t really know who to trust after that
You don’t know who’s in charge and what capacity
is the president of this world also a prisoner that they’ve built into — who knows
So I’m excited about the world building of how high or how wide or all the different ways they can go with that specific storyline
Bex knows someone who she had no idea as part of this

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Hunting Party Season 1 Episode 4 “Doctor Ezekiel Malak.”]
The serial killer the team pursues in The Hunting Party Episode 4 does to his victims what Melissa Roxburgh considers
(Watch the video above to see her ranking and a tease for the darkest moment yet still to come.)
her daughter whom she adopted after saving her from a killer
“Everyone sees something,” Roxburgh tells TV Insider. “What she saw, we’re not sure. Was it just Sam? Was it Oliver and Sam? Was it her dad? Was it Eli Johnson [Mark Moses]
My guess as Melissa is that she saw Oliver and she was being honest.” She adds that it will come up again
This comes as Bex is trying so hard to keep things strictly professional with Oliver
who left the FBI after he burned a man alive to find Sam (see where that ranks for Roxburgh in the video above)
We know that they used to mean a lot to each other
“Anything’s possible,” says Roxburgh
“You forgive people for a variety of things
but I think it will eventually become a love triangle of
does she go back to the past and someone that she felt very deeply for despite what he did
or does she move forward and lean on someone that she can trust a little bit more and doesn’t have the tainted past that they do?” She previously teased a potential triangle with Oliver and Shane
we find out why he’s been keeping that photo of the doctors at the Pit from the others: One of them is his father
“Shane’s personal search is very connected to his understanding of himself and family and all of the mysteries that surround him,” teases executive producer Jake Coburn
Jacob continues to think that Oliver is guilty of knowing about the explosion that took out the Pit and led to the escapes in the moments before; there’s video of him getting a phone call
taking classified information off a server
After he receives another call from that mysterious burner
Jacob asks Bex to plug a device into his phone so they can get the GPS data off it
but she does ultimately do it when Oliver checks on her at the hospital after her experience with Malak
it’s about needing to know and wanting to prove Jacob wrong
“It happens in an episode where she dies
and so I think that there’s a lot of thinking that she’s doing on her own and introspection about the past and how she actually feels,” explains Roxburgh
She actually does love Oliver in whatever capacity it’s at now
And then there’s another part of her that’s probably maybe trying to prove to herself
he is a bad guy and this is why I can’t trust him
and if I get this information off of the phone
then I’m justified in walking away.”
Bex and Jacob then check out the storage facility to which Oliver drove after receiving that call
Bex finds a box with stuff about and from Sam
including a photo of her at graduation and a birthday card for Oliver with “wish you were here.” That is a complete shock to Bex
who had no idea the two were in communication at all
“It’s weird,” says Roxburgh
it was the same time that he killed and burned the guy alive
And so for him to impose himself into her daughter’s life
Coburn and fellow executive producer JJ Bailey tease that Episode 5 will really dive into the aftermath of that
“She wrestles with that a lot because obviously suddenly Odell overlaps into her personal life in a way he hadn’t before
and she realizes her daughter was keeping a secret too
“She sort of reflects on who Odell is and why would he be keeping this a secret
The Sam storyline and her connection with Odell just really helps us shine another light onto a different side of Odell and Bex and Odell’s relationship
which is fun and messy and complicated.”
Adds Coburn of the scene at the end of Episode 5 in which they talk about it
“There’s some parts of the equation that we don’t realize yet
and I think it’s a pretty emotional scene between the two of them
Also in Oliver’s storage unit are blueprints of the Pit and coordinates to five other locations
“We’re going to find out that the Pit is one piece in a much larger puzzle
and we can tease that we’re going to get to see some other things,” says Bailey
“We’re going to focus a lot on one of the other silos.”
While Jacob may know more than Bex about the Pit and what’s been going on
Sabongui says those alternate sites are a surprise to his character
“It’s par for the course for somebody in Hassani’s line of work that I am privy to a bunch of secrets
but I know there’s official classifications above mine and there’s official information that I do not have,” he says
“Hassani hadn’t predicted [those other sites]
But I don’t think it’s hard for him to accept that there’s a bunch of stuff that he doesn’t know about.”
Bex knows that this doesn’t look good when it comes to how involved Oliver may or may not be
Factor in her also seeing that box of stuff about her daughter
“I don’t think it’s putting a great taste in her mouth
So when they come across the blueprints on top of that
What do you think of the latest twists on the NBC drama

[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for The Hunting Party Season 1 Episode 7 “Mark Marsden.”]
only for his real daughter to enter the picture
showrunner Jake Coburn unpacks the Silo 12 mystery and teases how the season ends
Oliver says that he got a call of a breach at Silo 12 before the blast
and Hassani go to Silo 12 and see the aftermath of a massacre
Bex brings up a good point earlier in the episode about the access code not being changed
So should we be wondering why it hasn’t been and the one that Oliver got works
but I do think the questions you’re asking are good questions
… The short answer is the fact that they were able to view this as something that will be visited in future seasons
Let’s talk about that scene at Silo 12 because there were clear signs of a massacre
There’s this room where it looks like people could watch the experiments on the inmates
What did you want to do with ending the episode with showing those parts of Silo 12
we wanted to show that basically the scene of the crime
where things initially happened and what initially went wrong
and the fact that there’s this creepy boardroom where people would watch experiments on humans
I think because we’re moving towards giving the answers and explaining what happened
10 are going to answer a lot of questions and hopefully in a satisfying way
What can you say exactly about Silo 12 and what was going on there before the blast
but I will say that what was happening was not particularly ethical and it was probably needed to be kept in the shadows
It feels like each silo had something different happening
but are there any silos where the same thing was happening
essentially running elsewhere or does that have to be made and built
you have good questions and good story instincts
I cannot answer that other than to say that it’s something we are looking forward to exploring because we’re trying to build a world that has a lot of possibilities
But I don’t want to leak any of them and I also don’t want to close off any of them
What can you say about that drug? Because Bex finds the bag and she’s like, this is a drug that Richard Harris was getting
Is she going to get answers this season about that drug because now she has that bag
that’s all going to play a big role and especially in 10
Hassani asks Bex if she really believes that Oliver is telling her everything he knows and she just says he’s not lying about Silo 12
So how much does Bex trust Oliver at this point in the season
Oliver in general is sort of a central question to her
She believes there is a good person there in Oliver Odell
but at the same time she knows there’s also a darkness
and I think she’s sort of listening to her gut that what he’s telling her here is true and it feels true to her and she believes it and she’s willing to follow it
And so I think she knows he can be deceptive
but it doesn’t feel like he’s being deceptive right now
so she’s using a lot of nonverbal signals to sort of make her decision as to whether or not to trust him
but she knows that he’s not 100 percent trustworthy
Because it feels like she trusts him more now than she did at the beginning of the season
she’s also learning more things that can take that trust away and make her question if she should be trusting him
So it’s like where’s the scale of that
And I think that’s something that’s going to be answered in the next few episodes
A lot of that’s going to come to a head
All of those things we are moving towards answering
And the same thing with Shane and his mysterious journey of what exactly is he doing and why
What would it take for Hassani to trust Oliver
but I don’t think Hassani is somebody that absolutely trusts a lot of people
So there’s part of him that may think
but I also know that she can be subject to manipulation or to errors in judgment or an outside influence
He’s not built to 100 percent trust anybody probably outside of his family
I don’t know whether I would say he trusts Bex more than Shane or Shane more than Bex
but those are the two people I think he really does trust quite a bit
What can you say about what the relationship actually is between Shane and Dulles and what Shane’s been doing
you’re going to understand that Shane’s deception
And I think you see at the end of [Episode] 7
and I think you can see in him that he’s not scared
He’s ready to talk about it with her
And as we’re going to get more information
you’re going to see that he does have a lot of conviction about finding out what he needs to find out
Melissa told me that Episode 9 is the scariest episode of the series
involving a killer who enjoys watching people suffer and that someone from the team ends up in danger
We have a variety of tones in the first season and for an Episode 4 with Malak
and I think it was probably one of the hardest to make
And it was kind of the dark night before the finale
What can you tease about the finale and how it sets up a second season
We’re trying to really deliver the best possible story we can with the most interesting and exciting twists possible
I’m excited for people to see it because I’m hoping that they will be surprised and satisfied and wanting more because we are going to learn a bunch of things in the finale that I think you would be very surprised by
How would you describe the cliffhanger of the finale
Anyone’s life hanging in the balance

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Hunting Party Season 1 Episode 2 “Clayton Jessup.”]
Eli Johnson (Mark Moses) was arrested for the murders of 12 girls, and now that she knows about the existence of the Pit, Bex worries that he was one of them. Her former mentor and the prison’s warden, Oliver (Nick Wechsler)
assures her he wasn’t (the world knows he’s alive
he reminds her) and promises to look into his location
But how much can she trust Oliver when it comes to that
strained because back when they were partners
he burned a man alive to get him to give up the location of a young girl he’d taken (and whom Bex adopted)
As we learn, when Bex opens up to one of her new teammates, Pit guard Shane (Josh McKenzie)
Eli was her best friend’s father and she caught him when she slept over one night
and when the time the cops got to the house
Oliver has Eli transferred to the team’s base
He wonders if she’d still be an agent if they knew the truth: Bex had taken his daughter into his garage that night and she ran and left her friend behind
Roxburgh enjoyed filming that Bex-Eli scene
“Mark Moses is really good at what he does
I didn’t try to plan too much,” she tells TV Insider
He’s the reason Bex does what she does on top of the fact that her dad was a sheriff
He was the first serial killer that she encountered and he killed her best friend
it’s at the back of her mind that it’s almost like a way to redeem the past
It’s a way to fix what she couldn’t fix when she was 15
she’s an adult now and she’s gone through life and she’s seen other serial killers
there’s this child inside of her that is scared still.”
She reveals that there were plans to possibly bring him back
things got busy.” She does hope to see him again in a second season
That conversation with Eli also adds another layer to the already complicated dynamic for Bex and Oliver
The serial killer reveals that Oliver knew the aforementioned truth
he’s been covering for her all this time after interviewing Eli for Bex’s security clearance when she was at Quantico; lying to the police would have gotten her disqualified from the bureau
he knew the kind of agent she’d make some day
Taking that into account along with their history and what Oliver had done to that man
Bex is “incredibly torn” about him
“She had real feelings for him at one point
I think she wrote him off when he murdered someone
But now that they’re back in each other’s lives working together
and she finds out that he hasn’t only been bad
he stood up for her and he’s currently standing up for her
“She worked with him very closely before the events [shown] in the [series premiere]
He was a little bit like a mentor figure in the Behavioral Analysis Unit in the FBI
I think she really gained a lot of respect for him
obviously this terrible choice that he made
and it obviously had huge ripple effects for her career
I think there’s a side that understands it,” he says
“There’s that great quote — you can only stare into the darkness so long before the darkness stares back or touches you back
I think that’s sort of what happened to Oliver
And I think Bex can recognize that while not approving of it obviously
I think she recognizes who he is on a deeper level,” he continues
“I think [there’s] that sort of push and pull of wanting to trust him
but knowing what he’s capable of and having seen it sort of firsthand and also realizing it’s been several years since they’ve seen each other and who knows what kind of journey he’s been on since then
She wants that old relationship that she had with him to be a real thing and to maybe find their way back to that
but she can’t deny what she’s seeing
and I think it makes that internal struggle for her very apparent.”
but she sure seems to feel like she can trust Shane since she talks to him about Eli
“I don’t know” why she does
“I chalk it up to she’s a great profiler
She knows when someone’s inherently good or inherently bad
does a really good job of coming across very calm
We find out that Shane has a lot of secrets down the road
I think that he is someone that she can lean on and trust
It seems like he doesn’t have as much of a hat in the race as everyone else
she knows that he’s a safe place.”

Canadian investment group Sagard has taken a stake in French secondaries specialist Bex Capital as it bolsters its offering for high-net-worth investors
The acquisition will allow the former – which has $27bn in assets under management (AUM) – to expand into fund-of-funds secondaries
When the deal is completed in the coming weeks
Bex Capital ($2bn of AUM) will be co-branded with Sagard
‘Bex has built a remarkable franchise in the secondaries market

Bex said that after building a client base from her Fayetteville home
she spent months working to secure a permanent space
but once she finally gained access this spring
"We’ve waited for this moment," she said April 9

the 4,230-square-foot facility is entirely class- and training-based
group sessions and personal training by appointment
"We are solely programmed classes and personal training," she said
"We’re not a come-as-you-please gym and that’s intentional."

Our annual Student Summer Series presents first-person reflections from Berkeley Law students who are involved in an array of compelling summer work experiences. These snapshots of students’ career-enhancing work and skill development — across the legal spectrum — highlight the meaningful opportunities they gain, often in partnership with the school’s Career Development Office
They were also a finalist in the school’s 1L Bales Trial Competition and have held internships in Mississippi
Grayzel-Ward unpacks their current summer work as a judicial extern for Judge Julia Ludwig at Austria’s Federal Administrative Court
I am spending my time in a familiar city in an unfamiliar role
I came to law school to take the next step in pursuing international human rights work
and I am working as a judicial extern at the Bundesverwaltungsgericht
a judge on this court who handles asylum and data protection cases
These both have significant human rights implications enabling people to access their right to life through their ability to reside in a safe place or to maintain their privacy
The Austrian legal system is very distinct from the one in the United States
and I am discovering new differences every day
judges remain fact-finders — even at the appellate level
I am able to assist with preparing materials before hearings
This means I get to do a lot of research not only concerning the state of the law
such as the current and potentially escalating situations of asylum seekers’ countries of origin due to contexts like war or natural disaster
I spent two years in Vienna working with refugees in schooling and housing settings
I spent several years while an undergraduate working at a refugee resettlement agency in Chicago
assisting with their youth and family services division
It is quite a stunning new experience to receive a file with someone’s entire application for asylum status
I am flipping through hundreds of pages of information about a person’s life
all the while feeling quite removed from the actual human’s experience
one still finds the pieces of humanity in each application
such as their hopes and ambitions if they are granted asylum status
In the first asylum case I was able to witness
I did not anticipate entering a chamber with lime green doors
the rest of the proceeding was very formal
which one might expect from an Austrian hearing
including dark purple and black velvet robes
The hearing mainly consisted of the judge asking questions directly to the applicant
without objections or much real intervention from the applicant’s attorney
Austria has an inquisitorial system in contrast to the adversarial system in the U.S
This means that while the Austrian attorney had opportunities to speak
the judge asked most of the questions directly to the applicant in an attempt to understand the facts as objectively as she could
rather than relying on attorney examinations of witnesses
While the stark differences between the American and Austrian legal systems first garnered most of my attention
I have also begun to appreciate the similarities
are signatories to the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees
which defines legally the status of refugees
While the implementation and application of this definition varies because of the contrasting legal systems
the human rights framework and its aim to promote these rights is the same
I am hopeful that I will take what I learn this summer and its valuable cross-cultural perspective into my future work
Given the current global conflict and the continued rise of climate refugees
gaining a deeper understanding of how asylum works in international practice is critical
My goal is to work in international human rights law in the future
so I am very grateful to have this amazing opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how other legal systems work
This experience has also helped me take a step back and critique the process of legal systems from an understanding that other systems exist
What method is really the best for seeking the truth and providing individuals with justice
While I continue to ruminate over this question
appreciating how different legal systems operate has deepened my understanding of the legal system as a dynamic instrument that has the potential to evolve to best serve specific contexts

Chief Sealth International High School is set to see some significant improvements thanks to the BEX IV levy voters approved earlier this month.
A key component of the BEX VI levy is the construction and renovation work planned for Chief Sealth International High School. Design work is scheduled to begin in 2027, with construction starting in 2029. The district aims to create schools that will serve the community for the next 100 years.
The proposed addition to Chief Sealth International High School seeks to meet the needs of the Career and Technical Education Program, eliminate the eight portable classrooms along the west property edge, and enhance energy conservation4. The $50 million project will allocate two-thirds of the funds to construction, while the remaining third will cover A/E fees, permit costs, construction contingency, furnishings, and Washington State Sales Tax.
Key aspects of the construction plans include:
• Classroom Addition: A 10-classroom addition is planned for the northern portion of the existing school, including two classrooms for Career and Technical Education (CTE) and eight general education classrooms to replace the portable classrooms currently in use.
• CTE Program Enhancement: The project involves relocating the existing Career and Technical Education construction trades classroom from the basement and the food service classroom from the interior of the building. These classrooms are currently undersized and poorly located for transporting necessary materials and supplies.
• Energy Efficiency: The project will replace the school’s gas heating system with a geothermal system for heating and cooling and remove all use of natural gas from the building, replacing it with electric equipment.
• Timeline: The design period for the project will run through 2027, with construction planned from 2027 to 2029 and completion expected before the start of school in September 2029.
• On-Site Construction: Construction is planned to occur while students remain on-site.
These upgrades are essential for maintaining the quality of education in Seattle Public Schools, bridging the gap between state funding and the actual needs of students and schools4. The passage of these levies ensures that Seattle schools can provide safe learning environments, necessary resources, and a well-rounded education for all students.

Mellow and delicate throughout, “Tonight” signals exactly what this new direction is about. There are some recognisable elements like the hint of Auto-Tune on his vocals, for example. Still, for the most part, he’s swapping the trap/wave that found him sharing stages with Russ Millions and M Huncho for a dramatically different pop/R&B/acoustic sound and some heartbreaking lyricism.
As a musician, Bex now draws on his classical training in guitar and flute, as well as the continent-hopping upbringing that took him from East London to Botswana, Brunei and ultimately Belgium. He’s changed as a songwriter too, sinking his teeth into subjects like toxic masculinity, heartbreak, mental health, and loss.
“The EP is about exercising vulnerability, the aim being to create a project that resonates globally through timeless sounds and genuine lyrics,” Bex tells Complex. “I restricted myself to just a solo guitar in terms of production because I want the EP to serve as a foundation for me to develop on musically throughout projects to come. Bex is the way for me to explore my personal as well as my musical identity, and this EP is the trailer of that story.”
Peep the visuals for the Luka Kocks-produced “Tonight” exclusively above and look out for The Acoustic EP when it arrives on February 28.

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Hunting Party series premiere
“Does this mean I’m back in?” That’s what Bex (Melissa Roxburgh), a former FBI profiler working at a casino in Virginia, wants to know when she’s approached by agents. Not yet, she’s told. Well, by the end of The Hunting Party‘s series premiere — and let’s face it
as soon as she’s told what was really going on at the top-secret prison named the Pit — she’s more than just off the bench
a guard at the Pit from his cell block who says no one knows him better
Not only do they have to keep secret from the public and any other law enforcement who Richard is
but they have to tell the one victim who previously survived him that it’s a copycat who may be after her
Bex wonders just what was really going on at the Pit
tells her that he wasn’t let off the block
didn’t know the names of the other guards
but he did see some of the experiments that were done to the inmates
especially after seeing Richard Harris being pumped with drugs in a video
He says that the reason why the number of prolific serial killers has dropped so significantly in the past few decades is because they catch them before they become like a Ted Bundy; everything they understand about psychopaths
all the theories FBI profilers use to catch serials comes from the work done at Pit
This new team does catch Richard — he’s killed after he takes his surviving victim hostage — but there’s a twist
that victim is no victim; she’s the one who made him a serial killer
and the episode ends with her being put in a shipping container to join many others
It’s not until the end of the premiere that Bex learns the Pit’s warden is none other than Oliver
who left the FBI after he burned a suspect alive to get the location of a young girl he’d kidnapped; Bex adopted her after finding her because of Oliver’s actions
He was recruited for the job after what happened
So what does it say about the job of a warden
“It definitely says something very particular,” co-showrunner JJ Bailey agrees
“There’s many things that we want to uncover over the season with Oliver
but I think one thing that sort of stands out for that particular role is that you kind of have to be okay with some shady things happening under your watch and potentially being okay to turn a blind eye.” There will be some things that he doesn’t know were happening
“It was sort of like you find a guy who’s made some big mistakes and maybe doesn’t have a lot of options,” Bailey continues
“You put him in this position and you can sort of operate with autonomy knowing that maybe morally he’s a little compromised
but also when he doesn’t have options
“It’s interesting because he’s a morally compromised character and yet there’s still some real goodness in him
And you understand what Bex sees and saw in him
and his decision to do what he did in the pilot
while it is gross and murderous and terrible
I think there’s a darkness in all of us that can understand how it happened
And he represents that darkness in all of us
Oliver was also the one to tell the AG to bring Bex in if she wanted to find Harris
Bex admits that she doesn’t blame him for what he did to save her daughter
that if they’d waited for a search party
but she argues he could have put out the fire
But Oliver’s not interested in rehashing old wounds
she’s still the best agent he’s ever worked with and he needs someone he can trust because the blast that collapsed the Pit was no accident
Someone wanted those killers back out in the world
it turns out there’s much more going on
“We talk a lot about what was going on at the Pit as being sort of like this octopus with many tentacles
we sort of chop one off only to realize there’s more
and there definitely is someone behind the explosion at the Pit with an ulterior motive that we’ll uncover hopefully seasons — multiple seasons — sort of down the road
We’re always going to be moving towards that eventual reveal of who was behind it and why.”
Coburn calls who blew up the Pit “the long arc of the show” but points out
“there are a lot of different groups — pharmaceutical companies
government shadowy projects — that were all involved in it and all doing bad things as well
It’s really a messy situation that is going to need to be untangled as opposed to a simple whodunnit where it’s like
and that’s the only answer.’ There’s plenty of blame to go around because this thing existed for decades and it was used inappropriately for decades.”
We couldn’t help but notice that Shane did seem eager to join Bex and Jacob in hunting down Richard Harris
and while the co-showrunners do confirm there’s more to him than meets the eye
they also assure that doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy
“He’s got some very big ulterior motives
“We really get into it in Episode 7 or 8
He’s got a very personal stake in what’s going on in the Pit
he really steps up and inserts himself into this investigation
and he’s got a very personal reason for doing that that goes beyond just having a job at this place.”
“It’s important to note the deception that he has about having a very personal reason never compromises his ability to do his job or to be there for the team
and he would never put his team or the people who become his friends at risk in order to accomplish that personal thing
They do sort of exist a little bit separately
And I think as you get towards the end of the season
he’s going to have a choice to make between his personal search and the team
and he will choose something that reaffirms his commitment to this team.”

Renowned for her mix of hypnotic rhythms and unique percussive sounds from her hand-made Gyil
the now Berlin-based Bex Burch will head out on a series of gigs this March and April
Learning how to hand-carve her wooden Gyil after spending three years in Ghana
Burch spent 18-months from 2008 in an instrument-making apprenticeship with master gyil player Thomas Sekgura
This formative experience gave her a deep-seated respect for the powerful Dagaare music as well as the confidence to pursue a path that reflected her own voice and the myriad strands and tastes of her personality
Developing her music Bex won wide acclaim for her post-punk jazz-influenced trio Vula Viel
with bassist Ruth Goller and drummer Jim Hart
This band morphed into Burch’s experimental electro-acoustic duo Boing
with former Polar Bear electronics maestro Leafcutter John
boundary pushing quintet with Tamar Osborn
Bex’s solo album There is only love and fear was the first release to spring from the ongoing practice of asking herself “what sounds do I like today?” and was recorded over thirty-two days of improvised sessions in the US with some of International Anthem’s finest musicians
Burch was invited to spend time in the US by International Anthem Records to meet and make music with like-minded musicians from their Chicago-based network
As Tony Benjamin wrote in Jazzwise upon the album’s release: “There Is Only Love And Fear is the impressive result of an apparent myriad of spontaneous collaborations whose diversity distils into a coherent sound portrait of Burch herself”
Rachel Musson joins Bex and Laurel for a one off double bill at the unque barn-cum-studio space Rattle and Brash in Stroud
Musson was among ten recipients of the 2024 Paul Hamlyn Award which saw the 30th anniversary of the Awards for Artists mark an increase in the award from £60,000 to £75,000 each
reflecting the Foundation’s strong belief in the value of artists and their vital contribution to society

All About The Rock
Tonight we ventured towards “The Lodge,” which is located in the Deaf Institute
to witness Alt Blk Era on their Rave Immortal UK Tour
This is the first time I’ve attended a gig at this room at the Deaf Institute
I thought I’d do a little bit of research and noticed that the capacity for this was noted as 140 standing guests
who have quickly excelled in the music scene
this is a small venue for these guys!” Upon arriving at the venue
it was quaint and had a good nostalgic vibe
and I do have to say it is the perfect venue for intimate gigs
Alt Blk Era’s Manchester show had fully sold out
so it would be great to see how this venue looked and held for an act like Alt Blk Era
and let me just say – I couldn’t have thought of any better venue to have seen this performance this evening
With this being a night with only two acts
BEX photo courtesy of Laura Jane Photography © & Photography for All About The Rock
Taking to the stage first and the only support act for the evening was BEX
but it’s definitely one I’ve been sleeping on
and I’ve been so happy to have been introduced to it tonight
the music brings out a different side to them
I would describe the sound to be a mix of alternative rock with punk rock sprinkled in the mix – it’s raw
and it’s fuelled by a passion that radiates throughout the performance
A part of the setup that I found very unique was the fact that they ran with two bassists but no guitarists
I may have been living under a rock the last few years but I have not
experienced a performance that did not include your standard 6 (or more) string guitars but two bass guitars; so for me it was a different experience and kept in line with what BEX was saying throughout the evening: being unique and different should be embraced
ALT BLK ERA photo courtesy of Laura Jane Photography © & Photography for All About The Rock
Following on and the headlining act for the evening
and their synergy on stage is beautiful – honestly
there’s no other word to describe it
Some combinations just work together… Cheese and wine
Yep… Nyrobi and Chaya… Hell yes
I don’t think there was any point throughout the evening where the duo were not smiling and genuinely looking like they LIVE for what they do
you must first enjoy what you do before others will also appreciate it
and their vibe bolstered this statement tenfold
If I could summarise the sound of Alt Blk Era
it would be a fusion of rock and drum and bass elements with an audible metal influence
With the Rave Immortal UK Tour being in ode to the release of their recent release back on January 10
Nyrobi brought a highlight to the fact that the album was centred around life experiences and about her hidden disability
which was the result of a chronic illness that left her bedridden in her teens
As someone who has gone through this myself (we won’t get deep here… I’m not an emotional person (*ahem*… I’m too metal for that
I could resonate with a lot of things that were said during the evening
and it honestly was heartwarming to hear someone being so vocal both musically and spoken
about the trauma and hardship of going through these experiences
The set was inclusive of the full ‘Rave Immortal’ album from start to finish and was an audio experience that I absolutely adored
Midway through the set during the performance of ‘Hunt You Down’
a runway from the rear of the room to the stage for people to really show what they could do
slaying that runway—it was a unique addition to the show and one I’m sure that some of the audience will remember for a while
Alt Blk Era is a testament that shows if you want something
and not let your life challenges get in your way
you will excel at what you do (and superbly
The admiration I have gained from this show and the stories they told this evening has given me a newfound respect for them
I can not wait to see what they do in the future
the atmosphere tonight was absolutely amazing
with artists who reflected that vibe perfectly
There was not one part throughout the evening I felt lacked energy or that ‘feel good’ vibe
For a change of scenery and a different genre than what I’d usually listen to
and from the reaction from the crowds throughout the night
I’m certain the feeling was mutual in the room

WARGASM-approved punk star inspired by riot grrrl
and growing up with Kerrang!’s very own TV channel…
Jumping on a call from her widely red-coloured accessorised room that matches her hair, 22-year-old BEX is more than excited to be chatting with K
“I used to watch Kerrang! TV all the time,” she grins. It started her on the road to where she is today, one of the most exciting and interesting breakout stars of 2024. Hailing from Milton Keynes, she’s already had some micro-hits in the shape of 2023’s Don’t Date The Devil and this summer’s Fight, as well as touring with Witch Fever and WARGASM
how did music become a full-time deal for her
something she played every day after school
“I wasn’t hanging out with people,” she recalls
Then I joined a weekend music club where they put you in bands.”
After a series of local gigs – notably Christmas market shows – BEX headed to Guildford to get immersed in a music scene
It was at that town’s Boileroom venue where she got inspired
“I went there to figure out what music I wanted to make
Soon enough, BEX wound up at the Academy Of Contemporary Music (ACM), a school she says “everyone ends up at”. It’s true, the ACM has churned out such notable names as Dan Flint of You Me At Six
BEX got an unexpected message from WARGASM’s Sam Matlock
“Sam messaged me saying we should do some writing together,” she says
“I was baffled because I didn’t think anyone knew I did music aside from some old covers.”
BEX and Sam have become semi-regular writing partners
brainstorming new music ideas together when they can
One such session brought to life BEX’s grungy recent banger Taste Better
“We started messing around with some scales BLACKPINK use
We came up with Taste Better in a couple of hours,” she explains
“I wasn’t a fan of them before but I am now
Sam really liked one of their songs and it all went from there.”
“I listen to Olivia Rodrigo every day and I understand why it’s in the charts,” she says
“There’s so much music coming out in the world

Bex Diamond goes to jail nearly every week
Diamond arrives at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex armed with a cashier’s check
sometimes paying the bail for up to three people at a time
The process of bailing someone out of jail includes filling out a form with a line stating your relationship to the inmate
Diamond sometimes writes “friend,” but this morning fills in “TBF.”
The young woman behind the glass window is new
The jail staffer asks what “TBF” means
“Tucson Bail Fund,” Diamond says
En español: Fondo comunitario con intención de ayudar con fianza de acusados ante juicio en Tucson
another woman opens the bond window to the left
“Is that Bex?” she calls out with a big smile
“It’s so good to see you!”
Diamond greets the woman behind the glass and the two chat about the Halloween decals that jail employees have affixed to the bond window
“That’s definitely the weirdest part of my job,” Diamond says
Diamond works as the operations director for the Tucson Bail Fund
a local community group that provides fund for bail for incarcerated people in need
The vast majority of the people incarcerated at the Pima County Jail are there pretrial
meaning they have not yet had their day in court or been sentenced for a crime
nearly 98 percent of inmates at the jail had not yet been tried
and were still innocent until proven guilty in the eyes of the law
just 37 were serving sentences at the jail
according to the most recent county report available
That same year, eight people died while incarcerated at the jail
The median bail bond amount for a felony in the United States is $10,000, according to the most recent available data from 2015, though Black and Latino defendants are consistently assigned higher bail amounts than their white counterparts
“The cash bail system favors those who have financial and social resources to be able to get out of custody and fight their case from the outside,” said Pima County Legal Defender Kristine Alger
“The people who are able to be out of custody are oftentimes at a significant advantage
who are people who don’t have financial resources
they’re the ones who end up stuck in jail."
Alger uses the Tucson Bail Fund “pretty much anytime” she has a client with a bond under $5,000 they’re not able to afford
“The bail fund has been a great resource for getting them back into the community
instead of them just kind of languishing in jail,” she said
The Tucson organization is the only community bail fund in Arizona
sustained entirely through grants and donations
Executive Director Tiera Rainey said since the group was founded in 2017
Rainey took over the bail fund in 2021 from her mother
who started it as a project of Black Lives Matter Tucson
being so close to the Borderlands,” said Rainey
who spent several years doing government contracting work in Washington
and Afghanistan before returning to her hometown of Tucson
“We're a community that is under-resourced
Sixty percent of the voting base is in Phoenix
and so I think often people overlook our little community.”
an incarcerated person’s family member
friend or lawyer fills out the group’s online form with basic information about the person’s circumstances
“We don't necessarily ask the specifics of the case,” Rainey said
“It’s normally family and friends that are applying
and they don't always know the details anyway
And then we use a matrix of prioritization in how we look at the application.”
The bail fund’s employees meet once a week to go over the pending applications
“There are lots of people in health crises
people whose children are in flux because they’ve been detained
Or people that are about to lose their job and therefore will lose their housing and will end up part of the houseless population
The average bond the Tucson Bail Fund provides is $5,000
the organization will work to come up with the money to cover higher amounts
the Tucson Bail Fund raised $15,000 to free Tyesha Wayne
a Sahuarita woman charged with second-degree murder after fatally shooting a man in what she said was an act of self-defense against her abuser
Wayne’s bail was originally set at $1 million until a judge reduced it to $150,000
The bail fund raised a tenth of that amount to pay a bail bondsman to free Wayne from jail
“We don't normally work with bail bondsmen
because we find their work extractive and expensive
This summer, charges against Wayne were dismissed without prejudice, though the Pima County Attorney’s Office said in a statement to the Green Valley News they may refile charges against her later
“Because she was able to fight her charges from outside a jail
she not only got custody of her children back
but ultimately the state’s case wasn’t strong enough to go to trial,” Rainey said
“There’s the possibility they could refile
but I still think it’s a huge win.”
the Tucson Bail Fund partnered with Pima County Juvenile Court to distribute more than $100,000 in Justice Department grants to cover restitution fees for juvenile offenders and some adults
juveniles cannot get their records sealed if they still owe restitution
which for many minors — who are unable to work
or to make very much money if they do — is impossible to come up with
The purpose of bail is to allow the accused to return home from jail before their trial, while ensuring they will return for their court date
Constitution prohibits "excessive bail," though what that means is left up to a judge
who sets the amount based on several factors
and the likelihood they may flee before the proceedings
The bail fund mostly gets their money back when a defendant completes their legal obligations
though sometimes they do not show up for their court date
“It’s definitely happened,” Rainey said
“It’s not the vast majority of our cases
but we’ve definitely had some absconsions.”
The bail fund does not attempt to follow up with inmates or their family members to urge them to go to court
The fund also does not have any contact with any alleged victims in their applicants’ cases
“Our criminal justice system doesn’t possess the creativity to see nuance in situations of harm,” Diamond said
“They place labels of ‘victim,’ ‘perpetrator,’ ‘aggressor,’ things like that
when the reality in most situations is far more complicated.”
when a request comes in for bail for someone accused of domestic violence
“We’re told from a young age that when you need support
but I didn’t anticipate that he would be arrested
I advocated for this not to happen.’”
One of the first people to receive bond from the fund was a man who relapsed for the first time in 10 years because his wife had cancer
and was facing up to 10 years in prison because of previous charges
He was able to fight his case from outside of jail
“Instead of just using kind of a blanket assessment
like we get with pretrial services or through the courts
where they're just asking people questions and adding up points,” Alger said
“the bail fund will look at a more holistic view
and they really look at cases on an individual basis
The fight to get the general public to approach the incarcerated
the addicted and the mentally ill with nuance and empathy is often a difficult one
“it's important for people to understand that just because you're accused of something does not mean that that is actually the detail of what has happened
And I think that that feeds into a lot of fear mongering,” Rainey said
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told the Sentinel last December that an estimated two-thirds of the jail population suffers from mental illness or substance abuse disorder
“That’s their only crime.”
Nanos supports the expansion of wraparound services
like addiction treatment or housing support
but doesn't think the jail is the place to provide them
you've got to go to jail.' What am I telling my populace that's out here who suffers from addiction
but are those social services better provided by a jail where the sheriff is in charge
The sheriff is also an advocate for bail reform himself
if you commit a nonviolent crime like shoplifting
wear an ankle monitor,” but if your crime is violent
“you’re staying in jail until your hearing.”
“You should not be in my jail based on the size of your wallet,” Nanos said
“I don’t know that bail’s worked for this country at all.”
Pima County Attorney Laura Conover called the cash bail system “antiquated and nonsensical” in a release
Conover advocates for a system similar to the one Nanos proposed — if someone poses an “ongoing threat of harm” to the community
prosecutors will recommend release until their next court date
with the decision to set bail left at the discretion of judges
Rainey says this kind of reform doesn’t solve the fundamental problems with incarceration
“If we're only focusing on the low-level misdemeanors
you are not decarcerating that jail at all,” Rainey said
More than 94 percent of the pretrial population at the Pima County jail last April was held on a felony charge — misdemeanors make up only a small portion of incarcerations there
it just is going to stack (up) even more Black
Rainey agrees with the sheriff's assertion that the jail is not a service provider to the mentally ill or addicted
she’d like to see a substantial investment in community social services
though her ultimate goal is prison abolition — replacing incarceration with systems of rehabilitation
“The only solution is abolition,” said Emily Morel
community organizer at the Tucson Bail Fund
“I don't think that we can fix a system that came from something so violent and continues to be violent
the Tucson Bail Fund will continue working to keep people out of jail
“We're doing one specific act of mutual aid
“Paying bail is not enough in and of itself
What people need is so much more to be thriving in this community.”

Talking tea towels: The Art Newspaper’s José da Silva (left) with David Shrigley Gareth Harris
Not going swimmingly: high waters are keeping bathers out of the Rhine Elena Goukassian
Today’s diary is very short, I’m sorry. I stayed up all night trying to keep up with a group of younger dealers in Basel for the first time. “Friends Bar” is not a safe space.
Anyway, it’s another wonderful day in Basel. I have been asked by The Art Newspaper team if I am depressed due to my sad diaries so far. I am, of course, as my natural dealer disposition, but I can cheer up today as I found my ghosted collectors last night and managed to convince them to spend some of their hard-earned cash on a few works from the booth. Will they want to pay for import and export? That is a story for another day.
I will naturally celebrate late into tonight, perhaps like the boys found fondling at midnight in the Richard Serra by the Kunsthalle Basel, or the Gmail adviser who fell flat on the dancefloor at L’Avventura last night... See you tomorrow.

BEX has unleashed a brand-new single and video
One of Kerrang!’s breaking artists to watch in 2025
the musician’s first new single of the year is “a representation of female oppression”
“Throughout history women have been deemed the weaker sex and the property of men,” BEX explains
crybaby represents the built-up rage exploding out of today’s women with the unjust still playing out all around them
we can close our eyes to inequality and live blind and naive to the facts (the crybaby eye masks in the music video represent this)
It can be easier to ignore the ‘little comments’; it can be easier to not ‘cause a scene’; it can be easier to just ‘not care’
This doesn’t make it right; this doesn't make it okay; this allows it to continue
It is our choice to remove the mask and fight back
You just have to be prepared for what you see
It’s about holding that grudge with you every day and using it to fuel your mission

A couple of months on from the BLACKPINK-inspired Taste Better, BEX has unleashed a new single
The singer’s lyrically-raging latest effort is called Sum Kinda Syko
it “represents someone who crossed boundaries”
BEX continues: “What started as admiration slowly turned into something overwhelming over the course of two years
This person began crossing lines in ways that became unsettling
with their behaviour becoming increasingly invasive
things escalated beyond what I could ignore
and I realised I was in a dangerous situation
“Sum Kinda Syko reflects my experience with harassment
and how this person couldn’t accept boundaries
Syko is a reminder of how quickly things can go from harmless to threatening.”
“Every single lyric is true and meaningful
it’s so blunt and honestly comedic when you read the lyrics alone.”
