the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography has been celebrating contemporary photography for more than 25 years venues both familiar and new in the city of Biel/Bienne are taken over by works and projects by some twenty Swiss and international photographers which can be experienced in the form of a photographic walking tour the exhibitions are complemented by a rich programme of events Held in a bilingual city in the centre of Switzerland the festival also develops each year projects that go out across Switzerland and abroad Defined as terrain transformed by human physical activity it is also observed and represented in the form of maps Whether glimpsed through windows from inside or used as a background in Renaissance paintings its conception has since developed and become more complex our relation with the landscape has evolved and its role in our constantly changing society is increasingly a subject of debate the landscape is closely connected with the real or imagined relationship that human beings cultivate with it a scene; it is also to appeal to our memory and to call on us to express new ways of perceiving it The 28th edition of the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography presents new horizons and contemporary perspectives that offer new ways of representing landscape.   Exhibited artists include Alexander Jaquemet GM Liem Le has won the 2024 Biel Chess Festival with a round to spare after defeating GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu with the black pieces The U.S.-based Vietnamese number-one has now won the title for three consecutive years It was a bad day for the Rameshbabu family, as GM Vaishali Rameshbabu also lost a long, difficult game against GM Alexander Donchenko who clinched second place in the Challengers Once again there were just three games played in the Triathlons with two of them decisive and earning the winner four points Masters And Challengers Results: Finals Round 2 Le has clinched first place in the Masters with the second to fourth spots still up for grabs while in the Challengers it's all clear: Saleh takes first Masters And Challengers Standings After Finals Round 2 GM Abhimanyu Mishra vs. GM Haik Martirosyan was an Italian Opening that followed their game from the earlier rapid segment when Mishra emerged a pawn up but had no real winning chances in a 53-move draw and although the game lasted until move 94 a decisive result never looked on the cards That was Mishra's fifth classical draw in a row though he must have thought he had an excellent chance of going into the final round with White vs since Le snatched the chance to win the title with a round to spare.  In both 2010 and 2011 he won the Aeroflot Open to gain a spot in the Dortmund super-tournament where he didn't look out of place against the world's elite He hit 2700 and the world top-25 at age 20 and in 2013 he won the World Blitz Championship but at around the same time he became one of the many strong grandmasters tempted to take up a scholarship to a U.S university—he later pointed out that despite his chess success he got few invitations to elite events Le would ultimately not only graduate from but take over the chess program at Webster University in St but that success came at the expense of the chess career that might have been as he's been demonstrating in Biel for the last three years.  Going into the penultimate round this year Le was ahead of Praggnanandhaa by five points the Indian star had to win on demand to maintain a chance of claiming the title "I’m extremely happy with the game today Before the game I would be happy with a draw as well and also with this victory I win the Festival with one round to spare because in the last two years it was still very tense so it’s really nice that I make it with one round to spare this time."  I’m extremely happy with the game today Le had guessed the opening his opponent would play and though he briefly worried he'd fallen into preparation he emerged with a very healthy position Liem Le castles long: "This is also a very strong message from the reigning champion — I'm not afraid of you! Come and get me, I'm right here!" (Neiksans)https://t.co/QKqEOE0lQv#BielChess pic.twitter.com/CYh00QPXuo He got what he described as "a great version of the Berlin endgame" and later won a pawn "I think my strength is more in technical positions These type of positions I really like to play and I feel like I see a lot of things Praggnanandhaa tried to find refuge in a fortress and both players had calculated the final pawn endgame to a win for Black The final moments as Praggnanandhaa resigns and Liem Le wins #BielChess 2024, just as he did in 2022 and 2023! pic.twitter.com/rsghw8W3vc The annotations below are based on Le's post-game interview That win took Le up to 2741.6 on the live rating list, surpassing the peak rating he set after last year's Biel of 2740. If he beats Martirosyan in the final round he'll climb above World Champion Ding Liren into the world number-15 spot while his new rating of 2745.6 would curiously be identical to Praggnanandhaa's current live rating Praggnanandhaa's rating will change as well in the final round For that to happen he needs to beat Mishra The battle for second place is very much still alive Everything is now decided in the Challengers after Donchenko took revenge for his spectacular loss to Vaishali earlier in the event and has now clinched second place was in the position of needing to win on demand in her case to have a chance of second place as she gained an Isolated Queen's Pawn position that was tantalizingly close to equal but it was a death by a thousand cuts as Donchenko eventually won the pawn and ground out a 75-move win.  With that loss Vaishali dropped out of the Women's top-10 just as Praggnanandhaa dropped out of the overall top-10 but in both cases the suspicion is it won't be long before a triumphant return Meanwhile, there's one game to go in the Challengers, with tournament winner GM Saleh Salem taking on second-place Donchenko with pride and rating points at stake.    The live broadcast was hosted by GM Arturs Neiksans and Angelika Valkova.   Colin McGourty led news at Chess24 from its launch until it merged with Chess.com a decade later. An amateur player, he got into chess writing when he set up the website Chess in Translation after previously studying Slavic languages and literature in St. Andrews, Odesa, Oxford, and Krakow. 26 Feb Lugano on Wed Pro Hockey Rumors June 19, 2024 at 9:23 am CDT | by 3 Comments June 19: Andersson will indeed be heading to Switzerland, inking a two-year deal with Biel-Bienne that was made official Wednesday a two-year deal means he’ll be an unrestricted free agent if he attempts to return to the NHL in 2026 so the Habs issuing him a qualifying offer means nothing unless he opts out of his contract with Biel-Bienne after one season Beaud adds that some have suggested a deal with the 25-year-old is already in place although GM Martin Steinegger indicated that’s not the case but revealed that he is interested in bringing Andersson to his club for next season After spending all but one game in the minors in 2022-23 the Kings elected not to tender Andersson a qualifying offer resulting in him becoming an unrestricted free agent two-way deal with the hope that he’d push for a roster spot with Montreal in training camp he cleared waivers in training camp and was sent down to AHL Laval where he stayed for the entire season Andersson had a productive showing for the Rocket collecting 21 goals and 24 assists in 53 games while missing considerable time due to a lower-body injury Despite being one of Laval’s top forwards Montreal elected not to bring him up at any point of the season If a deal with Biel-Bienne ultimately gets done the Canadiens will still have the option to tender Andersson a qualifying offer which would keep him under club control if Andersson has determined that a regular spot in the NHL isn’t coming his way based on how things have gone in the NHL perhaps a strong showing overseas could ultimately boost his stock down the road Montreal Canadiens| NLA| Transactions 100% of prospects that throw their silver medals into the stands at the World against YB after extra time In extra time of this semi-final against the cantonal rivals in the Biel Arena Loic Socka scurried into the Bernese penalty area David von Ballmoos rushed out of his goal and brought his opponent down who was making his first appearance between the posts since the quarter-final against FC Zurich at the end of February (3:2) was not only aware at this moment that his place had mostly been on the bench recently The goalkeeper had no chance when Malko Sartoretti took the penalty and YB found themselves trailing by a goal they would never make up Coach Samir Chaibeddra had announced in advance that Biel wanted to be an unpleasant opponent - and the Seelanders had proven this not least in the quarter-finals when they knocked Lugano out of the competition a team that had been able to play for the trophy several times in recent years the Biel fans also went into the sixth Cup semi-final in their club's history with a healthy dose of confidence they let Switzerland know: "Bieu isch ä Cupmannschaft" Young Boys also got to see the Cup face of the club from the Promotion League Although the Swiss champions had more possession the outsiders managed to penetrate the dangerous area in front of David von Ballmoos' goal from time to time with quick counter-attacks Brian Beyer in particular got himself into dangerous positions in front of YB's number 2 on several occasions the Frenchman's long-range shot in the first half fizzed just past the post (29') and when he was ready to shoot after a beautifully executed counter-attack Bernese right-back Lewin Blum was able to get his foot between them at the last moment (58') The underdogs then had what was supposed to be their best chance with just under a quarter of an hour to go in the 90 minutes Abdoulaye Coulibaly got away from Kastriot Imeri and the Geneva player in Bern's service knocked over the burly striker Referee Alessandro Dudic initially awarded a penalty but the intervention of the video referee revealed that the foul had taken place a few centimetres outside the Bern penalty area the VAR was on the side of the Super League club even though they were outnumbered from then on as Imeri was shown the red card for his action the Young Boys had not been on the side of the centimeters A goal by Alan Virginius was disallowed because Cedric Itten had been just offside when Filip Ugrinic had shot earlier It could have been the moment that heralded a significantly less nerve-wracking evening for Giorgio Contini's team And because Chris Bedia's supposed last-minute goal was disallowed due to a handball all of Young Boys' efforts went unrewarded the Bernese must therefore bury their next goal - and given the eight-point gap to FC Basel in the championship probably prepare themselves for a title-less season Biel creates a sensation and knocks YB out of the Cup Biel is the first third division team ever to reach the Cup final Bedia's goal does not count because the ball hit his hand YB score with the very last chance to equalize Chris Bedia has a great chance shortly before the end of regular extra time His shot from a promising position fizzes past the left post well - YB have never been so close to scoring in this match Lakomy hammers the ball against the crossbar from close range Reminder: Yellow and Black are playing outnumbered But Biel are still doing their job brilliantly YB have 15 minutes left to at least save themselves for the penalty shoot-out and the VAR doesn't come forward either The penalty is awarded and Sartoretti puts Biel in front Von Ballmoos comes out of the goal and falls Biel player Socka no clear offense by the YB keeper can be seen The VAR announces itself and Dudic steps up to the screen The foul took place outside the penalty area Kastriot Imeri has only been on the pitch for a few minutes and is immediately sent off He pulls the emergency brake in the penalty area against Coulibaly The ball is now exclusively in YB's hands But the Super League side cannot find a gap Biel discover their attacking spirit and force YB to defend The starting phase of the 2nd half belongs to Biel Beyer heads it into the far corner and just misses the lead We have at least 45 minutes of football ahead of us There are no really big chances for either side The long-range shot from Biel's Beyer and YB's Ugrinic were the most dangerous attacking moves of the game Now it's time to take a breather for 15 minutes Alessandro Dudic talks to the VAR and raises his hand after the conversation Cedric Itten was in an offside position at the origin of the goal You're already thinking about the half-time score and then Virginius interferes with your plans the ball bounces off the Biel defense and lands in the feet of Virginius Ugrinic fires a ball into the Biel box from an estimated 19 meters and tests Ratke who fishes the ball out of the bottom left corner And again there is applause for the Biel goalkeeper It's not as if only YB are doing anything offensively Biel are always hinting at their goal ambitions The hosts skilfully play their way into the danger zone Beyer gets his shot away and hits the ball just wide of the left goalpost Not because their colors are setting the tone in attack tries to fist away a long throw-in from YB YB hold on to the ball and try to push it over the goal line the Biel players are able to clear on the line The home team skillfully keep the ball in their own ranks long ball with his chest and shoots from a turn The shot on the edge of the penalty area is tight but ultimately easy pickings for keeper Von Ballmoos Biel are making their first forays into the attack the home side make it clear that they are also capable with the ball at their feet But the hosts are moving the ball cleverly 30 seconds have been played and YB are showing which way they want to go The Swiss champions push into the opposition penalty area for the first time but the Biel defense holds firm and clears the ball Referee Alessandro Dudic blows the whistle Everything is ready for the Cup semi-final - including the players After the coup in the quarter-final against last year's Cup finalists Lugano the lower-ranked team from the Bernese Seeland is aiming for the next big surprise It would be the first time that a club from the third-highest Swiss league has qualified for a cup final This will take place on June 1 at YB's home stadium in Bern's Wankdorf Basel and Lausanne-Sport will face each other in the other semi-final on Sunday afternoon (3.30 pm) The exhibition How Like A Leaf I Am by Alexandra Baumgartner invites visitors to reflect on the deep connections between humans and plants The exhibition focuses on the crucial issue of preserving seeds as a common good amidst the growing loss of agrobiodiversity By combining photography and interactive elements the exhibition fosters an emotional connection to the plant world Baumgartner explores seeds as cultural heritage—a resource shaped and handed down through generations by both human and non-human influences exchanging and reseeding are the driving forces behind the diversity of cultivated plants Oscillating between intensive research and introspective observation How Like A Leaf I Am portrays gestures of resistance against the ongoing loss of seed diversity Baumgartner wanders through the gardens of private seed keepers and visits state and community-run seed banks In close collaboration with the collective Seed Carriers which brings attention to civil society efforts to preserve cultivated diversity and shares the stories of seeds the exhibition encourages reflection and dialogue on the challenges arising from the interconnected climate and biodiversity crises Baumgartner’s work offers new perspectives on the relationship between humans and nature urging us to reconsider our responsibility for the potential within these connections the organizers have focussed on innovation with a "triathlon" format of different types of chess employed since 2019 World number-eight Praggnanandhaa heads the Masters, but he faces tough competition from German number-one GM Vincent Keymer, Armenian number-one Martirosyan, and Vietnamese number-one GM Liem Le who is looking to win the title for a third year in a row 2018 U.S. Champion GM Sam Shankland won the accompanying open tournament in Biel in 2016 and ran through the city's fountain—he's promised to do it again if he wins this year I'm a sucker for tradition! pic.twitter.com/V6p4GA2MvW The format of the triathlons may best be digested with a stiff drink though in essence it's fairly straightforward Players compete at three different time controls with different numbers of points for a win In order of when the games are played we have: As you can see, classical chess, which uses the same long time control as the Ding Liren vs. Ian Nepomniachtchi World Championship match with four-point wins encouraged by giving less than half that number of points for a draw We'll also get more classical chess at the end due to a unique format that will see the bottom two (or three if a long way adrift of first place) eliminated before the remaining players face each other in another three rounds of classical chess with colors reversed the results of which serve as a tiebreaker if players are level on points after the main events The Chess960 (so named for the 960 possible starting positions) was played at the same 15+5 time control as the rapid chess with Praggnanandhaa and Donchenko clinching the top spots.  If you're wondering how six players in each group managed to play seven rounds it's because after they'd played all the players in their own group the Challengers players were able to pick players from the Masters to face in the final two rounds The Masters group was a very close battle ultimately decided by the tiebreaker of Praggnanandhaa winning the head-to-head battle against Martirosyan Opening up the c-file allowed the young Indian to line up all his heavy pieces against Black's king position That was Martirosyan's one loss, while Praggnanandhaa himself blundered a pin and lost to Mishra In round three Keymer suddenly got to win a piece against Shankland from what had been a totally-lost position it was Keymer handing out a free point—to the tournament winner Praggnanandhaa was able to offer a draw on move five to Donchenko so I decided to offer a draw in the last game."  though it hadn't been quite as easy as the two-point lead in the final standings suggests He commented: "I just got very unclear or bad positions and then in time scrambles it somehow worked out but I wouldn’t say it was very convincing!"  when Bjerre was leading on a perfect 3/3 and was two pawns up with a winning position against Donchenko (on 2.5/3) only to lose the thread of the game when he tried to safeguard his king with 28...Kf8?.  The main event began with a single day of rapid chess on Sunday I think almost all of them had a better rating two months back It kind of feels like I have to play them when they’re lower-rated It's not going to be easy at all—I think almost all of them had a better rating two months back We got to see that in action in the rapid as Martirosyan Praggnanandhaa looked on course to match that score when he found a nice trick to win a pawn against Shankland in the final round who is currently rated 2661 in classical chess but has been rated as high as 2708 was happy to get preparation for leading Armenia at the Olympiad.. "During COVID I didn’t have opportunities to play I really love this game and I wanted to just play chess It doesn’t matter how many games I will play and even I think last year I played more than this year when I’m playing strong tournaments." No harm was done to anyone's overall chances in the Masters since the gap from Martirosyan in first place to Mishra and Shankland in last is just three points—less than one win in the upcoming classical games with Donchenko once again finishing in clear first after winning four games and losing one (to Bjerre) Donchenko admitted the games hadn't been smooth sailing: "I would say they were at the very best as unclear as yesterday but generally they should not have gone in my favor several times." "I basically gave away half a point in one move in the first game," which was true though he could also have lost to Samunenkov!  while it's notable that Vaishali finished joint third in Rapid despite starting as the lowest-rated player Once again she has a chance to steal the limelight from her brother The live broadcasts were hosted by GM Arturs Neiksans and Angelika Valkova.   The 2024 Biel Chess Festival runs July 13-26 in Biel/Bienne The main ones are the six-player Masters and Challengers GM Triathlons where the players compete in five rounds of Rapid chess (2 points for a win/1 for a draw) The top four then play three more rounds of Classical against each other Ties are settled by the standings of the Chess960 tournament held on the opening day.  Colin McGourty led news at Chess24 from its launch until it merged with Chess.com a decade later he got into chess writing when he set up the website Chess in Translation after previously studying Slavic languages and literature in St Sample images taken from the latest trendPX gallery published: June 2018.CASUAL men - defining the current mood for relaxed styles and easy layers; utility details push the look into workwear and leather pieces add a grungy edge - 111 images contrast panels or woven patterns freshen up the denim story; focus on patches inside out details and subtle changes to the silhouette - 71 images JERSEY/KNIT men - graphics reference retro technology fake news/ parody slogans and branding; technical aspects filter through into knitwear - 131 images OUTERWEAR men - the current wave of statement styles puts the emphasis on coated or technical fabrics colour effects and clean finishes - 47 images SOFT men - a general softening illustrated in shirts with pyjama-like construction easy styles and technicolour prints - 67 images SPORTS men - elevated styles combine with formalwear sports-driven pieces mix with utility casuals and full-on sportswear features football references or retro branding - 104 images TAILORING men - suit silhouettes sharpen up and slim down alternatives are generously proportioned with a double-breasted jacket and easy trousers  - 139 images though the 15-year-old still had the second-best performance in classical chess.  The rankings had already been decided in the Challengers with a day to spare but second to fourth were still up for grabs in the Masters One game never looked likely to produce a decisive result A day earlier, Le had clinched the Biel Chess title for a third year in a row. If he could win with Black—and that wasn't out of the question since his earlier three classical wins had all come with the black pieces, then he'd have the bragging rights of overtaking World Champion Ding Liren to move to world number 15 But he also didn't want to spoil a near-perfect event: but also I didn’t want to take too much risk because it wouldn’t be nice to finish the tournament with a loss and I think in the last two years I always had one or two losses in the classical part of the tournament so this year I thought if I could finish the tournament without losing it would be nice I thought if I could finish the tournament without losing it would be nice had thought that his draw in the penultimate round would give him a chance to fight for the title in the last round Le's win over Praggnanandhaa meant the title had gone while a draw in the last round would clinch him second place That's why he had nothing against an eighth classical draw in a row I was thinking I would do my best in the last round but he played a very good game yesterday and I didn’t have a chance to win the tournament Martirosyan tested his opponent's opening knowledge and by move 16 said he'd already decided on taking a draw and the game fizzled out into a 41-move draw.  Everything that had gone wrong for top-seed Praggnanandhaa in Biel had begun in the first classical game where he misplayed a sacrificial attack and was confidently ground down by Mishra The world number eight would go on to lose another two classical games meaning that all that was left by the final round was to try and regain some rating and pride with a consolation win Mishra went for the Samisch with 3.f3 against Praggnanandhaa's King's Indian setup and we were in well-known theory until 6...Nfd7! There are eight more popular moves (6...c5 has been played over a thousand times) while the move in the game had never been played at the top level Had Mishra fallen into some leftover Candidates preparation The move puzzled the commentators as well as Le and Martirosyan with Le wondering what the plan was after 7.Be3 We never got to see that since Mishra thought for 10 minutes and went for 7.Bg5 and soon Praggnanandhaa was playing the game in Benko Gambit style by sacrificing a pawn with b5 and then a6 (the computer prefers 10.a4 or 10.Ng3) Black was able to take over was a triumphant justification of the earlier knight move and Black's pieces went on to terrorize White's army until it became a matter of choosing the most efficient kill 28...Rxc3 was only the computer's third choice Praggnanandhaa sacs an exchange as he looks to end the #BielChess Masters with a win! https://t.co/F0mFSHBriq pic.twitter.com/asNPvjP8X1 Mishra was playing on with a rook against a queen and there were echoes of their first game in Biel when a despondent Praggnanandhaa had played on at the end with a rook and a piece down That win wasn't enough to see Praggnanandhaa return to the top 10 but it limited the rating damage to 8.4 points and saw him finish in third place—he also won the Blitz and the Chess960 which would have been used as a tiebreaker if required As you can see, despite that one loss, Mishra was the second-highest scorer in classical chess. He picked up 16.7 rating points and is three years younger than anyone higher rated than him on the 2700chess junior rating list Watch out for 13-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus with the Turkish GM-elect on the brink of smashing the record for the youngest player ever to cross a 2600 rating.   There was also one game remaining in the Challengers, but with all the places already determined there was little for the winner, GM Saleh Salem, to play for against the player guaranteed to take second place, GM Alexander Donchenko A 6.Bg5 Najdorf Sicilian fizzled out after queens were exchanged on move 12 Biel Challengers Final Standings Breakdown The top two placings were deserved, with Salem winning the Classical and Blitz, while Donchenko took the Rapid and Chess960, but, despite two losses at the end, GM Vaishali Rameshbabu's performance was arguably the most impressive of the tournament Her earlier run of three classical wins in a row saw her end with a 17.5-point Elo gain to enter the 2500-club.  Half the games were decisive in round four Classical Chess Round 4 Results: Masters And Challengers The results translated into new leaders in both sections Standings After Classical Chess Round 4: Masters And Challengers the Masters roared back to life in round four Both players came into this matchup winless in classical chess in Biel and Keymer had decided it was time to take drastic measures I think it’s probably the first 1.e4 game I’ve played in like nine years it was just that the tournament so far hasn’t really gone the way I’d like Praggnanandhaa was also in the mood to take risks but his aggressive opening backfired until an exchange sacrifice on move 21 smacked of desperation and much easier for White to play with both players dangerously short on time and didn't try to hide his disappointment when the killer 38.Bd8 Praggnanandhaa had fought back brilliantly, but he blunders with 4 moves to go until the time control and is set to lose to Keymer! https://t.co/HCjg3OOwWa #BielChess pic.twitter.com/qhWBCH3GTm Praggnanandhaa raced through the stages of grief before continuing the game but his task was hopeless as Keymer grabbed four crucial points That much-needed win for Keymer pushed him four points ahead of Praggnanandhaa whose tournament could be over on Sunday when the players in fifth and sixth will be eliminated before the final three rounds It also saw Praggnanandhaa drop to 12th place on the live rating list Going into the round, GM Abhimanyu Mishra was the sole leader, but he was held to a draw by GM Haik Martirosyan Martirosyan was pushing from the opening right until the latter stages but was unable to land a decisive blow In the end it was Mishra who got to land the blow 36...Bxh3 After 37.gxh3 Qf2+ the white king couldn't escape from checks the chance to take the lead in 2024 as well Shankland only found out he could play a couple of days before the tournament after GM Javokhir Sindarov had trouble getting a visa star was glad to catch a flight direct from San Francisco to Zurich but understandably he hasn't been at his best after a lack of preparation and jet lag to deal with the game against Le reached what should have been a drawn endgame until the Vietnamese number-one pounced on some inaccuracies and ruthlessly took home maximum points We also got a new leader in the Challengers The one quiet game in round four was the 52-move draw between GMs Jonas Bjerre and Alexander Donchenko and found herself down to 10 minutes compared to one hour and 27 minutes when she went for the risky 20...f6?! He might already be back on the ice for the game against HC Ambrì-Piotta on Tuesday they might also move his comeback further back The forward was hit between his head and shoulder and has been experiencing some pain in the area Nemo fans partied in the streets of Biel after their hometown hero won the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland on Sunday The city is planning to throw an official bash in honour of Nemo Mettler after the 24-year-old triumphed in the glitzy annual television spectacular Your enthusiasm and authentic performance convinced everyone!" the city said on X Your city of Bienne is extremely proud of you: bravo and thank you You carried the colours of Bienne high throughout the whole world "We look forward to celebrating your victory soon in Bienne at an official public reception." Switzerland's Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider congratulated Nemo on X calling the Eurovision final victory "a spotlight on your multiple talents and recognition of your personality imbued with exuberance The Rex cinema broadcast Thursday's second semi-final live with Nemo among the 10 to make it through to Saturday night's extravaganza The artist's former singing teacher Eli Schewa Dreyfus was in the audience "He took to the stage like a fish to water and when I did Mozart arias he took to it very quickly," she told RTS television "He put on a show that you can't imagine how he learned to do so because he was so naturally gifted on stage." said Nemo had performed on stage at the municipal theatre and at the Lakelive festival "Nemo's career and talent are remarkable and unique -- a perfect example of the diversity and openness of Biel's culture," she said "Nemo creates and moves freely between classical "A wonderful example of the inclusive and dynamic culture that we are proud of in Biel." Sunday's victory was only the third time Switzerland had won Eurovision Lys Assia won the first-ever contest in 1956 with "Refrain" and Canadian then-starlet Celine Dion triumphed in 1988 singing "Ne partez pas sans moi" Switzerland will host Eurovision next year Switzerland staged the 1956 contest at the Teatro Kursaal in Lugano and declined to host again in 1957 while the 1989 event was held in the Palais de Beaulieu in Lausanne Your comment will be reviewed before being posted GM Liem Le has been crowned as the winner of the Grandmaster Triathlon at the 2023 Biel International Chess Festival for the second year straight after a dominant classical performance Following his 5/7 score and 2853 rating performance in the longest time control, Le built a total score of 32.5 across the classical, rapid, and blitz portions which was enough to win the $11,500 first prize. Second-place GM Vincent Keymer still managed to lift his rating to 2701 despite losing his lead with a final-round loss The Biel International Chess Festival is an annual celebration of chess that has taken place since 1968; the first GM tournament was won by the late English GM Tony Miles in 1977 a colorful schedule featured masters and amateur tournaments and more creative formats such as the "Brain Battle Chess vs none are more prestigious than the Grandmaster Triathlon an eight-player round-robin invitational where participants compete in classical with scores in each added to determine the final standings With a mixing point of experience and young talent ready for action pundits were hard-pressed to pick a winner The rapid section was the curtain-raiser for the festival and two players—Keymer and Navara— scored 5/7 in this time control The German number-one was particularly impressive as he didn't lose a single game His win over Arjun included an incisive exchange sacrifice in round seven and was the icing on the cake for the rapid victor Navara proved borderline invincible in the rapid section and secured four wins and two draws in his other games A blistering queen sacrifice against the Grandmaster Triathlon's eventual winner Le certainly raised eyebrows By the lofty standards of the former world blitz champion Le a 2.5/7 start in the rapid was a modest one his play later in the event would allow him to claw his way back into contention it was the Czech GM Navara who was able to extend his lead following a convincing victory over Amin while Keymer was able to respond in kind two rounds later with a win over Le to join the leader once more One unique feature of this section is the fact that players received four points for a win and one and half a point for a draw Le was the main beneficiary of this rule and did everything he could to ensure as many games as possible were decisive left him in pole position heading into the blitz rounds which was a double round-robin with typical scoring methods Arjun was the hero of the 3+2 time control and scored a blazing 10.5/14 eclipsing the second-placed Le who managed 8.5/14 For the Indian GM who recently topped the field at the Sharjah Masters, the end of the month will see him ascend to the number-one spot in Indian blitz chess (ahead of none other than GM Viswanathan Anand) for the first time in his career Clinical pressure and tactical mastery are the names of the game for the 19-year-old who dispatched foe after foe One of his key victories was the round-14 game against Keymer which went a long way in deciding his German opponent's fate in the tournament See if you can find the move that sealed the game for Arjun below With the resumption of classical chess the following day the players faced the challenging prospect of reverting back to slow play Le seemed to adjust the best and scored a crucial win over the struggling Chinese GM Yu with the black pieces and Le all realistic contenders for first place in the tournament it was the former who would take a half-point lead over Le heading into the final round had the opportunity to steal first place if he could topple Le in the final round provided that Keymer lost his game and after a high-quality draw transpired between the second- and third-placed players the onus to claim the crown rested solely on Keymer His Indian opponent mercilessly swept him aside after blitzing out the majority of the game While the result was disappointing for Keymer his 2701 FIDE rating is a new personal best who has not played competitive chess since the 2022 edition and instead has focused on coaching the talented Webster University team it was a warm welcome back to the elite echelons of the game The Vietnamese victor's 2739 live classical rating is also a new personal best and he is now positioned 16th in the world (Full standings in all categories here.) The Grandmaster Triathlon was the highlight of the 2023 Biel/Bienne International Chess Festival which was an 8-player tournament that took place July 16-26 in Biel/Bienne Results from classical and rapid round-robins were combined to determine the winner of the event which had a total prize fund of approximately $32,800 we looked into the origins of a picture that appeared to show a flight of stairs with no railing hugging the outside of a concrete building The strange photograph had appeared on Reddit with the thread title, "Someone didn't plan their factory floors right," as well as a humorous caption for programmers: "A hotfix in production." On Tumblr "What if someone locks both doors when you go outside lol?" An ad on X, formerly known as Twitter, also promoted a link to a lengthy article on Kueez.com that featured the same picture We clicked on the link in the ad and landed on the article on Kueez.com. This article was originally published on Wallstoriez.com "Funny Construction Fails That Are Almost Hard to Look at." This article appeared to have been written for advertising arbitrage purposes which meant that the website's owner was looking to make more money from ads displayed in the article than it cost to place the originating ad on X (Twitter) The article claimed that the staircase was a failure in construction Hands up if you have heart palpitations just by looking at this photo The stairs on the side of this building look like something out of a recurring nightmare and we honestly don't understand how anything like this could ever be built we know that exterior staircases are important in case of a fire It would take us a whole hour to climb these stairs; if we could even make it to the top at all Cutting to the chase, a Reddit user named Master_Grievous pointed out the picture was real but the stairs were merely part of an art installation The location of the staircase was the Kongresshaus in Biel/Bienne According to langbaumann.com the stairs artwork was created by Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann "Beautiful Steps #2," and was created in 2009 for the art piece "plays a trick on perception," including an optical illusion achieved by building smaller doors and stairs than might be expected: The congress building in Biel-Bienne plays a trick on perception: because the diminutive grid of its large glass front does not match the ceiling height of the floors the building appears taller than it is—more like a skyscraper than its actual 50 meters (164 foot) of height The building also features an unusual concrete structure that encloses one half of the volume like an oversize frame leaving a gap on one side between itself and the building leading from one fake door to another around one corner of the structure In keeping with the optical illusion of the building the work was built to a slightly smaller scale than a normal door and stair The slender sculpture plays with an imaginary functionality The description said that the doors were fake which appeared to mean that there was no way to access the stairs from inside the building We reached out to the artists to ask questions and received the following information: It is constructed from aluminum and galvanized steel and it is not meant to support real people on the steps it's built strong enough to support wind forces and once in a while even a stork birds' nest "Someone Didn't Plan Their Factory Floors Right." Kalle Kossila managed another solid game netting three points (1G while teammate Emil Larmi made 28 perfect saves to collect his first shutout of the CHL season The Swedes had sensational control in the zone which would see them draw a penalty from Biel-Bienne, who were looking for containment. Finnish forward Kossila dished some fancy sauce to Robert Rosén who'd beat the left side of van Pottelberghe A call in favour of the Swiss visitors saw a golden chance by Fabio Hofer who collected an impressive long pass from his netminder, but backstop Emil Larmi had his number Forward Manuel Ågren extended the lead for the Lakers at 14:01 after tapping in an awkward bounce off a rebound hammered at the net by Kossila.  A slapshot from the blade of Biel-Bienne's Toni Rajala was a fraction away from cutting the lead but instead ringed off the post of Larmi. The first period would end 2-0 in favour of the hosts with Växjö outshooting their rivals 14-11 The Swedes continued the scoring in the second period. Martin Lundberg, who was assisted by Dylan McLaughlin and Tobias Rieder, beat the glove side of van Pottelberghe to extend the lead to 3-0 A highlight-reel-worthy stick save by van Pottelberghe stemmed further damage to the scoreboard but the Swiss side struggled to close the gap.  Biel-Bienne were chasing points in the third period but it would be Växjö would take the lion's share of quality opportunities including a sensational attempt from Ågren who dangled his way onto the doorstep of the Swiss team's net the Swiss team pulled their goalie for a sixth man on their powerplay but had no success The last two minutes saw the goalie pulled once more, but that decision proved fatal after a turnover saw Kossila net his first goal of the night to close out the game 4-0 in favor of the hosts open-minded and bilingual city that straddles the linguistic border between German- and French-speaking Switzerland The content to be displayed here comes from the "vimeo Videos" service approval of the cookie settings of the "vimeo Videos" service from the heading "Content from external content providers" is required Biel/Bienne became a centre for the watchmaking industry in the mid-19th century the city has constantly been forward-looking and sought to reinvent itself Biel/Bienne’s various incarnations have made it a 'city of the future' a 'city of communication' and a 'city of innovation' And today’s Biel/Bienne still lives by this open attitude It is a place where projects of all types can get off the ground Biel/Bienne’s population has grown every year since the turn of millennium. Rajala's situation will be reevaluated daily and it is not sure whether the forward will be able to suit up the coming weekend the Finn was Biel's most productive player Following a 5-3 away win in the First Game of the Round of 16, Färjestad Karlstad were in good shape on home ice and beat EHC Biel-Bienne a second time The 11-7 aggregate win puts Färjestad into the Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals for the very first time Entering the game with a two-goal lead on aggregate, Färjestad doubled it to four in the first period of the Return Game to take firm control. Just past the seven-minute mark, Lucas Forsell capitalised on a rebound to open the scoring. Four minutes later, Michael Lindqvist made it 2-0, putting a nice re-direction on a feed from Axel Bergkvist Färjestad were happy to maintain the status quo in the middle frame as each team scored twice Biel-Bienne were able to cut the deficit to three on a couple of occasions but the home side quickly answered both times Jere Sallinen got the visitors on the board on the powerplay, converting a nice relay pass from Rihards Bukarts. But just 1:24 later, Färjestad got that back on a powerplay of their own when the puck came to Joel Kellman at the point and he made no mistake picking the top corner Biel-Bienne continued to hang around in the third period as Ville Pokka converted a pass from Sallinen to once again cut the deficit to three. But with just 5:50 to play, Carl Dahlström one-timed a cross-point pass from Joakim Nygård to seemingly put things out of reach Nygård then briefly gave Färjestad a five-goal lead on aggregate with a shorthanded empty-netter before Yanik Burren got a late one back for Biel-Bienne Beate Gütschow and Laure Winants at Foto Arsenal Wien CONTACT Photo Festival and Captured Earth at MoCP are among the Biel-Bienne are readying up for their second stint in the Champions Hockey League as they are set for their first-ever meeting against Italian side HC Bolzano is taking a pragmatic approach to the matchup as he’s focused on making sure the Foxes “do their best to get the fans excited.” He goes on to say: “We know it's not easy but making the next round is definitely our first goal.” During Knoll’s 15-year tenure with the club he has seen the Foxes skate away with numerous National titles but he has yet to watch them in a CHL Final When it comes to playing into the later rounds of the season his confidence is absolute: “In the past we've shown that we can beat top-level teams.” Beating top-level teams is certainly something Biel-Bienne Head Coach Antti Törmänen is concerned with “to enjoy every game and possibility that tests us against other top teams in Europe.” Törmänen hopes to repeat last year's success saying: “Our team EHC Biel found it a very nice experience to be part of the CHL last year We want this year to go the same way as last year.” Following a phenomenal first campaign which saw Biel-Bienne compete in the Quarter-Finals the team are more invested than ever in making sure this knock-out round matchup won’t be their last Each recognize the challenges they face and have nothing but respect for their opponents “We had challenging games last year against another ICE Hockey League team so we know that these opponents are good and not easy to win against They battle hard and compete for every puck,” Törmänen admitted Knoll didn’t shy away from the fact that Biel-Bienne are “a very good club with talented players,” and goes on to say “I am sure it will be a good challenge.” Because neither side has faced each other in the CHL up to this point they are also aware of the excitement surrounding their matchup According to Knoll: “For us it is a pleasure because Swiss hockey is very popular in Italy and so it will be an interesting match for the public.” Regardless of the outcome, Knoll and Törmänen are humbled to be considered among the best in European hockey “We are proud that we can be part of this league It is a good way to see different kinds of opponents And I think everybody can have their share of this,” Biel-Bienne’s bench boss declared "the CHL is a very popular competition for our fans and of course also for our club It allows us to compare ourselves with the best teams in Europe to see different hockey and to experience new challenges.” Experiencing new challenges and sharing hockey with fans all over the world is a cornerstone of the CHL Every club competing in this prestigious competition can attest to this two years ago we brought over 4,000 people to the stadium in August.” Adding “this has never happened in Bolzano in the middle of summer.” Törmänen adding: “It doesn't matter if you are a player coach or staff … It's a good way for the whole club to see how things are done in different environments.” these two teams will have the chance to hopefully experience more than just new environments as they begin their journey for a CHL title “it’s a pity” that the competition has been shortened He went on to say that this new format motivates his team to, “do our best to go as far as possible and make a great CHL journey.” Törmänen agrees that “Everything matters and you have to be at your best in these games.” Looking for a symbol of adventure to accompany you on your journey through life a timekeeper that will guide you to every new frontier and beyond it was the first brand
