Burgdorf might need to be ranked an 11 “I have often said that getting a front-row seat to watch Haley lead is akin to watching Caitlin Clark,” Hawkins said Caitlin Clark was playing at a speed and a level that her teammates couldn’t keep up with They became better players simply watching Caitlin and being around Caitlin That’s what it is like in the gym with Haley.” Burgdorf was equally elite in helping lead St an undefeated DuKane Conference title and an appearance in a Class 4A sectional championship match Burgdorf is the Captain of the 2024 Daily Herald Fox Valley All-Area girls volleyball team To put into perspective how dominating Burgdorf — a Penn State University commit — was on the court this season North players swung 2,581 times in the team’s 88 sets played registering 611 kills (the seventh-highest single-season total in recorded Illinois High School Association history) typically with two and three sets of opposing mitts staring her in the face Burgdorf averaged 6.9 kills per set and led the entire state regardless of class in kills by nearly 100 according to one online statistical service That same online outlet has Burgdorf as the most-set player in the state this season Burgorf logged 11 matches against teams that played in either Class 3A or 4A sectional championship matches (including three against 4A runner-up Benet and one against 3A third-place finisher Prairie Ridge) taking 352 swings and racking up 155 kills “Haley is among the best elite players because she is capable of totally dominating matches,” Hawkins said “I would say she ranks among some of the best volleyball players to ever come out of Illinois and even rivals some of them (Hawkins mentioned recent standout names such as Grace Loberg (Geneva/Wisconsin) Ella Wrobel (Plainfield North/Wisconsin/Ohio State) Taylor Landfair (Plainfield Central/Minnesota/Nebraska) Hannah Werth (Glenwood/Nebraska) and Alli Frantti (Richmond-Burton/Penn State) “She’s not just an offensive weapon from the front row Haley is dominating the game in all aspects.” Burgdorf also led North in digs with 268 and was second on the team in service aces with 48 “Most other coaches would tell you she is just as lethal attacking from the back row as she is in the front,” Hawkins said “Haley has the ‘it’ factor — that competitive drive that makes her play with a chip on her shoulder at all times She will often leave our gym after two hours of practice and head to another gym for jump training she will go in and get passing reps on days off so there is a reason she is as good as she is.” Burgdorf said with big stats and flashy miles-per-hour digits on the arm swing comes more sets of hands something she was more prepared for this season “I got better at mixing my shots up a lot more,” she said I had a bunch more off-the-hands types of shots You have to use the hands and I wasn’t real good at that before Being blocked like that is very challenging but I loved it and I saw it and mixed up my shots I would prefer the one block or no block to get the bounce ball everybody wants to see I know people need to double- and triple-team me to block me the DuKane Conference most valuable player this year Charles North career kills mark (1,239) with a year to play and became the first player in program history to go over the 1,000 career-kill mark she takes great pride in the defensive aspect of her game “The best part of my game is probably my leadership or my pass to kill,” said Burgdorf who plays for the Aurora-based Sports Performance club “Passing is one of the things I have been working on a ton I want to be a six-rotation player in college and maybe go further after college Hawkins added: “Haley was definitely good her freshman and sophomore year but she really has worked to become a more viable option from the back row and she has worked hard on her blocking.” Hawkins said Burgdorf also puts the pedal to the floor when it comes to being a leader “We played a speed of volleyball this year that most of our girls were not accustomed to but they quickly adapted to it,” she explained “Haley has so much knowledge of the game that she readily shares with her teammates so they are constantly learning from her in that regard but also in the way she approaches everything she does with a tenacity we’ve grown because of Haley in the way we approach what we do and the belief we have in our ability to execute what we do.” And Burgdorf said she’s got plenty left to do at North “I want to remembered as a person that set a standard for the program and someone who wants everybody to get better You have to put the hard work in if you want to do something,” she said I set the kills record this year and maybe I get that to 1,500 or 2,000 next year and hopefully that helps us get to state I want to set that standard for the program I want to be known as the girl who wanted to work for that and let it be known that’s what this program is about.” (KMTV) — A new CHARLES — There was no surprise that the expectations for St. Charles North junior Haley Burgdorf would be high for her third high school season. After leading the North Stars in kills in each of her first two seasons, as well as emerging as a leader on the team in her sophomore year after a plethora of injuries to seniors on the roster, all eyes were on Burgdorf to see how she could perform as a leader among a relatively new squad. But even with those high expectations, the Penn State commit still managed to surpass them all, and even managed to surprise North Stars coach Lindsey Hawkins in the process. “She was always good, but when she came out and just started dominating from the first game it was like ‘Who is this kid and what did she do in the offseason?’ ” Hawkins said. “She wanted it so bad, and she showed that very early on that she had put in so much work and really sacrificed a lot as a player.” The junior ended up finishing her season with 611 kills on a 50.7% kill percentage, while also adding 268 digs, 48 service aces and 44 total blocks. Along with that, she surpassed the 1,000-career kill mark, earned All-State honors and helped the North Stars reach a sectional final for the first time since 2017. Considering all the accolades, Burgdorf has been named the 2024 Kane County Chronicle Volleyball Player of the Year. “It was a really good junior season,” Burgdorf said. “There were a lot of ups and downs during the season, but in the end, we did really good and we were all there for each other. And even though we didn’t reach all of our goals, a lot of good things happened for us.” St. Charles North's Haley Burgdorf (23) spikes the ball during the game on Wednesday Oct. 2, 2024, while traveling to take on St. Francis High School in Wheaton. (David Toney for Shaw Local News /David Toney) Burgdorf’s presence at the net was noticeable in nearly every game that she played. The junior, who averaged 6.9 kills per set, finished the season recording more matches where she recorded 20+ kills (8) than matches with single-digit kills (3). It was that type of play that also allowed for other girls on the team to thrive as well, especially junior setter Mia McCall, who finished with 816 assists on the season, and outside hitter Amber Czerniak, who collected 196 kills on the season. “Even when I was in a rut, other people would start playing better and it would get me out of the rut,” Burgdorf said. “And if I was playing well, it would open up a lot of opportunities for Amber on an open net or Mia with a center dump. It created a lot of opportunities for us and our ability to play together was really good this year.” Besides Burgdorf’s elite offensive ability, Hawkins also felt her ability to excel at defense and at the service line were also a key contributors in multiple matches, especially against teams like Benet, which was runner-up in the Class 4A state tournament. St. Charles North’s Haley Burgdorf goes up for a block during a game on Monday, Oct. 7, 2024 at Benet in Lisle. (Sandy Bressner) “The fact that we were able to hold Division I recruits to season-low numbers, that’s all attributed Haley and the level of focus that she brings not just to her offense, but her defense as well,” Hawkins said. “Defense became a huge focal point for us this season, and that was mostly attributed to her, and everyone else kind of hopped on board with trying to have that same mentality.” Another change the Penn State commit had to endure throughout the season was a change in leadership style. While Burgdorf has always been a leader by example with her play on the court, she had to adapt to a more vocal leadership role this season as the most experienced player on the roster. But much like her play on the court, Hawkins said Burgdorf managed to adapt to the role very quickly, especially with the help of her fellow juniors. “I think I took the leadership role a lot more serious this season, and the juniors also took in that role of helping the underclassmen,” Burgdorf said. “The seniors from last year helped a lot by being supportive during our games, and I think that just helped me keep an open mind while playing and supporting the girls on every play.” Class 4A Lake Park Regional Girls Volleyball final St. Charles North's Haley Burgdorf (23) celebrates with teammates after defeating Wheaton North for the Class 4A Lake Park Regional final volleyball title. Oct 31, 2024 in Roselle. (Gary E Duncan Sr) Despite falling short of winning the state title, Burgdorf is confident the North Stars, who are returning all but one starter next season, can carry over the grit and resilience the team had this season to hopefully make a title run, while also picking up some more accolades, in her final high school season. “I just want the girls coming in to know what our culture is like and what we have established from the very beginning,” Burgdorf said. “Hopefully we can win state and I can reach those milestones like 2,000 kills and hopefully Gatorade Player of the Year.” And it’s that kind of mindset that she and the rest of the team holds that has Hawkins more than excited to see what Burgdorf and the North Stars have in store for 2025. “It just gives me goosebumps,” Hawkins said. “The team just all jumped on board, and they thoroughly believe that they can make a huge run next year. And they just keep talking about it, even through the club season. “It makes me feel really good as a coach that the culture that we’ve created together is one that everyone is buying into. And with Haley leading that, we’re very excited about next year.” Copyright © 2023 Shaw Local News Network the Nebraska Memorial Forest will have 7,500 trees 200 were planted by volunteers on Wednesday at Flanagan Lake Park in Omaha Continue reading for the expanded version of the story students from Omaha South High School plant trees at Flanagan Lake Park Each honors a Nebraskan who gave their life to serve - like Marine Carl Burgdorf Carl died by suicide in 2019 at just 23 years old. career high at the high school level to help the North Stars secure a three-set victory (25-20 25-19) over the Vikings to secure the conference title for themselves for the second straight season She’s doing what no other high school player has done before not that I’ve seen,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said “She is controlling both nets and with her swing 7-0 DuKane conference) had seen against a conference opponent this season Five of them came during an 8-2 run the North Stars used at the beginning of the set which was a lead they would not relinquish “I just had to realize what they were doing on defense and knowing what I could run that they wouldn’t be ready for,” Burgdorf said but also had a lot of deep corner shots that they were not stopping at all I just had to mix it up while staying confident in what I’m doing.” Also having a career night at the net for North was junior Amber Czerniak Hawkins said that while Burgdorf is usually the one getting the spotlight Czerniak is the one usually doing the dirty work for the team “She really is the unsung hero of the team,” Hawkins said “We keep her on the service line a lot because she’s lethal back there and then she’ll usually the one getting touches off the block but she’s the one doing the dirty work for us.” The North Stars took a highly-contested first set that saw both teams flipping the lead to start off the set which was one they wouldn’t give up as they went on to win the set 25-20 The Vikings started out the second set with a 9-4 lead and they never let the North Stars get within three as they went on to win the set 25-21 The set victory from the Vikings is the only set the North Stars have lost in conference play “We know we can play with these good teams we’ve just got to work on finishing the game and not letting one error become another,” Geneva coach Lauren Kosecki said We set our eyes on the prize and we just kept going We’ve got to continue to do that throughout the entire match.” Leading the way for the Vikings was senior Georgetown commit Fiona Turnbull who finished with nine kills and six blocks Also turning in a big performance was University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee commit Sam Vanda “I told Fiona before the game that I needed her to take over at the net and get after it “She’s going to be a huge loss for us next year She’s one of our go-to players on the team.” In the cabinet of the Museum Franz Gertsch the German drawer and printmaker Anya Triestram (b showcases her current works on paper and sculptures The floral motifs and geometric-ornamental Everything in the exhibition seems to seek balance a balance in the interplay of nature and culture The show becomes a place that invites us to perceive the quiet connections in things – and to see yesterday with new eyes tomorrow Anya Triestram was born in 1977 in the district of Eichsfeld After studying art and German for teaching at the University of Erfurt she studied graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig from 2002 to 2007 she completed her training as a master student of Annette Schröter in the painting class Triestram has held the position of Senior Artist at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Austria) with artistic and technical management for woodcut and linocut she has mostly exhibited in Germany and Austria The artist lives and works in Vienna and Leipzig The exhibition at the Museum Franz Gertsch is Triestram’s first solo exhibition in Switzerland The show was curated by Anna Wesle in collaboration with the artist large-format paintings and woodcuts by Franz Gertsch can be seen at the Museum Franz Gertsch The exhibition focuses on portraits and nature pieces the four Gräser (Grasses) paintings from the 1990s are displayed with which Gertsch resumed painting after a several-year break during which he exclusively developed his new woodcut technique Gräser I (1995/96) shows a strongly enlarged section of the reed-like grass (wood brome) from his garden in Rüschegg the artist used sections from his own first painting as templates Gertsch pursued a conceptual approach to his own painting in this series The second room of the exhibition is dedicated to large-format portraits alongside Schwarzwasser woodcuts The models for the portrait woodcuts on display here were young women in their early 20s from Franz Gertsch’s surroundings and circle of acquaintances Gertsch developed his own type of large-format coloured woodcut that differed from his early ventures in this technique in several essential points While he retained this technique’s classic black linearity in his first woodcuts and worked with a system of black contours the later woodcuts are characterized by a system of so-called ‘light points’—the depiction of the motif results from the interaction of the print’s bright spots Franz Gertsch proceeded here from a photographic model translating the light from a colour slide projection while working the lime wood printing block with a cutter into a system of incised dots and untreated areas Franz Gertsch and his printing team finally printed a small edition of his woodcuts by hand on Japanese handmade paper the artist worked on several blocks for a subject and then printed the different motif and colour blocks over each other This can be seen in our exhibition in Natascha IV and Silvia he printed with one block and only one colour The players on the Benet volleyball team found themselves in a situation they hadn’t seen a whole lot in the second set Charles North in straight sets in each of their first two meetings and already up a set in Thursday’s sectional finals and on the verge of losing just their fourth set on the year it didn’t seem to faze the top-ranked team in the state “When you have a team that’s mature and older and they’ve been in these situations before you’ve got to continue to stick with it and keep playing,” Benet coach Brad Baker said “You’ve got to throw the scoreboard away and try to get one point at a time.” crawling their way to tie the game at 24-24 before securing a 28-26 victory in the second set to secure the victory (25-18 28-26) for their third straight sectional title Thursday “Our mindset just didn’t change throughout the entire match “We’ve still got to make the same plays and do the same things And we just had to finish the match there at the end Benet will have a chance to advance to state for the third year in a row when they face New Trier in the St in straight sets to claim their sectional title Leading the way for the Redwings (38-1) in the game was senior Brooklynne Brass along with senior Keira O’Donnell (seven kills) secured key kills while North was on set point to keep the set alive “We just started worrying about our side a little bit more,” the Maryland commit said “In the huddle we realized that we were feeding off of their energy and not doing it on our own So I felt like as soon as we started getting hyped off our own points and going all out I think that’s when we switched and started going off.” who transferred to the Redwings from Minooka prior to the season said that part of her success came from the chemistry the team has developed throughout the season “We know that the back row is going to get a good pass and the setter is going to get a good set so all our hitters are going to get good opportunities for kills I just feel like us working together on offense is just how we play.” Charles North coach Lindsey Hawkins said she was proud of how the team fought and how during the match especially after losing their first two matches against the Redwings earlier in the season “We’ve just gotten better and better each time that we played them and we have progressively gotten better as the season has gone on,” Hawkins said “They had all the confidence in the world walking into the gym even with everyone telling us that we couldn’t beat them You never would have known that walking into the gym They did not believe at all that they would lose.” Junior Haley Burgdorf put the North Stars on her back The Penn State commit finished the match with 20 kills and she deserves all the accolades coming her way,” Hawkins said “It uplifts all the girls too because they start feeding off the energy and the good that she’s doing.” The North Stars finished the season with a 32-7 record she knows that with the amount of returners she’ll have next season could be a sign for special things in the near future “With Haley and Mia (McCall) leading them next season We’re mourning right now because the group of seniors was unlike anything that I’ve had but we’re very excited about the young kids in our program.” COLONIE – Paul Burgdorf and his wife recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary He’s not so sure he would have reached either milestone if not for the colonoscopy he underwent earlier this year “The surgeon called me back and said I got great news for you and not-so-great news for you,'” Burgdorf recalled was that his colon cancer hadn’t metastasized The not-so-great news was that an aortic aneurysm was detected maybe my horizon on this planet is not as "The first we lost in week 27; the second in week 17; and the third in week 23," Burgdorf said More From Newsweek Vault: What Is a Health Savings Account? Burgdorf experienced severe vaginal discomfort "I had this heavy discharge and constant itching and stinging," she said Burgdorf and her husband investigated her symptoms online and found that they were consistent with the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis Bacterial vaginosis is an infection caused by changes in the billions of microbes that live in the vagina More From Newsweek Vault: Compare the Top Health Savings Account (HSA) Providers A healthy vaginal microbiome is typically dominated by Lactobacillus bacteria which play an important role in protecting their host from infections and maintaining optimal conditions inside the vagina due to a variety of factors—including antibiotics "douching" and transmission from sexual partners—the vaginal microbiome can become imbalanced and overrun with "bad" bacteria According to the World Health Organization more than 1 in 5 women experience vaginosis at some point in their lives although as many as 50 percent of cases are asymptomatic The condition has also been associated with a range of reproductive health issues including lower chances of conceiving during IVF an increased risk of healthy pregnancy loss "I asked [my doctors] if they could test me for bacterial vaginosis but they didn't see a reason to," Burgdorf said "I felt like my doctors were telling me I was stupid." Burgdorf went to the Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic at Copenhagen's Hvidovre Hospital "When we first went [to the clinic] I felt like we had tried everything," Burgdorf said "But both me and my husband decided to give it a go." a professor and gynecological consultant at the University of Copenhagen and head of the Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic "We were actually in the middle of doing a larger randomized controlled trial to explore the benefits of transplanting vaginal microbes from healthy donors to treat vaginosis," Nielsen told Newsweek "We had already screened 302 healthy women in the Copenhagen area and had a predefined protocol to make sure we were not transmitting any diseases "That was all ongoing when Pernille came into my clinic and told us her story." Burgdorf was asked to give a vaginal sample for further testing and 90 percent of Burgdorf's sample was dominated by a bacterium called Gardnerella 'You've been right all along,'" Burgdorf said "They asked me if I wanted to be patient zero for their vaginal microbiome transplant but I can also be an answer for so many other women and families who were losing their children.'" led by then-PhD student Tine Wrønding administered Burgdorf's vaginal microbiome transplant They had been expecting to deliver several rounds of treatment before her symptoms went away she called us and said she had no symptoms," Nielsen said Burgdorf added: "I don't think anyone could have hoped for a better result But also I was so angry: 'Was this all I needed We buried three boys and they died because of bacteria?'" "I just felt like a completely new woman." The team hurried to collect a second vaginal sample from the donor and set up an appointment with Burgdorf Burgdorf's microbiome had reverted itself back to its healthy post-transplant status "She actually had the power to convert it back by herself," Nielsen said Although it was a tense and stressful time Burgdorf said the pregnancy went "perfectly" and she delivered a healthy baby boy It has now been 19 months since her "miracle" baby "I have no doubt in my mind that it must have been [the transplant,]" Burgdorf said while Nielsen is "super excited" by these results she cautioned that it is too early to say the transplantation alone was responsible for Burgdorf's pregnancy success "We need more data to confirm that," she said "The only thing we can say with complete firmness is that her symptoms disappeared and that the [transplanted microbes] have persisted in her body it's mind-blowing that you can give a donor that engraft and that she is able to go on to menstruate deliver her baby and still keep having that donor-originated Lactobacillus in the vagina "It's like everything else in medicine—some people will benefit and that is amazing but there's so much more we need to learn before this can become a [standard] treatment," she said This treatment has not only shown promise in restoring fertility but it may also offer symptom relief for women at the end of their reproductive years "We know about all the problems that happen when estrogen goes down when you go into menopause and there could be some benefits [of microbial transplantation] for the vaginal dryness and increase in infections and all of that," Nielsen said Nielsen hopes the treatment will become more scalable and accessible to patients they will have an artificial version [of vaginal microbiome transplants] because there are so many women needing this treatment," she said "I also think it's important to discuss that we get everything [from the donor's microbiome]—we get the ["good"] bacteria but we also get immune factors and a lot of other [beneficial] things together with those microbes [By contrast,] if you take probiotics it's just one strain—maybe two strains—of bacteria that you are introducing So that might explain why we have not seen such effective results with probiotics." she encourages anyone in a similar position to ask their doctors to test for bacterial vaginosis "If you have a feeling that there is something wrong in your body stick with it and believe in yourself," she said not just for the parents' lives but also for the small life you can end up losing." bacterial vaginosis is mostly treated using vaginally-administered antibiotics while this treatment comes with an 80 to 90 percent cure rate antibiotic treatment also comes with some major drawbacks 60 percent of patients see a recurrence of symptoms within the first 12 months after treatment antibiotics may harm the balance of healthy bacteria in the vagina (or in the gut if administered orally.) Finally the use of antibiotics may result in the development of antibiotic resistance among vaginosis-related bacteria potentially making the condition even harder to treat Vaginal microbiome transplantation has been demonstrated once before in a study in 2019 in which five women with recurrent vaginosis were treated with vaginal microbiome transplants from healthy donors the transplants were received after pretreatment with antibiotics and there was no proof of engraftment of the donor bacteria What is unique about Burgdorf's case is the fact that the transplant was performed in the absence of antibiotics resulting in a long-lasting shift in the bacterial composition of the recipient's microbiome including engraftment and persistence of the donor strains The full case study can be read in the journal EClinicalMedicine Is there a health problem that's worrying you and your story could be featured on Newsweek Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground Newsletters in your inbox See all The second set could not have started in a worse way for St After taking the first set of their DuKane Conference opener rather handily the North Stars found themselves in a 10-1 hole against Wheaton North to open the set And then then the ball got placed in the hands of junior Haley Burgdorf “It was a real exciting feeling,” Burgdorf said “It just showed us that we can come back from the adversity that we had throughout the team And once we focus on our side and limit the errors along with some solid defensive and service play helped propel the North Stars to win the set and secure the 2-0 victory (25-15 25-20) over the Falcons to secure a victory in their DuKane conference opener Tuesday The Falcons managed to tie the set at 16 before the North Stars pulled off a 9-4 run to close out the set for the win 1-0 DuKane) to its best opening stretch since 2018 And while head coach Lindsey Hawkins feels her team is playing well she feels there are some improvements to be made “We definitely have some spurts where we’re not being as mentally tough as I know we can be so we want to clean that up.” Hawkins said “We definitely want to continue on this streak but we have things we can do better and get better at.” Charles North found themselves doing well throughout the game was serving The North Stars finished the night with nine service aces Mia McCall led the team with three of them Sidney Wright and Amber Czerniak each added two more “My coach told me back in the day that you’re going to live and die behind the service line so you better be good at it,” Hawkins said “We want to be really aggressive with that serve because we want to get teams out of system so that’s something that we work on every day so we hope that they continue that aggressiveness.” One aspect that both teams excelled at throughout the match was defense with both teams managing to keep play alive with pancakes and quick recoveries on each point “We have tried to instill a no ball hits the floor type of mentality in our game,” Hawkins said “We knew that Wheaton North would be that way as well and we were ready for balls to come over that we thought were down We worked on having that mentality of going after every ball in practice and not allowing your body or mind tell you you can’t get it.” 0-1) coach Justin Hineman said he was happy with how his team played at the net especially with a player like Burgdorf on the opposite side “We knew that they packed a lot of power offensively and I felt like we were able to kind of neutralize that to the best of our abilities,” Hineman said but I felt like we made her make some decisions so I was happy with the way we played defensively today.” Beloved husband of Rose Burgdorf; UConn undergraduates and medical, dental, and pharmacy students in the Urban Service Track also are pitching in, as well as participants in the UConn campus-community partnership Husky Sport “We can use this as a teaching space for the neighborhood,” says Sarah Bailey the UConn Extension Master Gardener coordinator for Hartford County where folks can walk through the garden and learn more about vegetables.” Gould says a majority of the produce comes by way of seedlings donated by Pickn’ Patch The program has also received support from the Hartford Department of Health and Human Services and Ecological Landscape Designs of West Hartford The Burgdorf was founded in 1970 as the outpatient service for what was then known as the UConn Health Center which initially occupied the old McCook State Hospital on the corner of Coventry and Holcomb streets Follow UConn Health on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube the former vice chancellor and general counsel for the University of Texas System told members of the House Committee on Transparency in State Agency Operations on Wednesday that some system regents' "clear intent" was to "get rid of" Bill Powers the president of the University of Texas at Austin The legislative committee is investigating whether articles of impeachment should be filed against UT Regent Wallace Hall Lawmakers have expressed concern that he has misused his power and have alleged that he is on a "witch hunt" targeting Powers Wednesday marked the committee's second day of witness testimony this week the committee has primarily heard from witnesses who were not favorable toward Hall More hearings are tentatively scheduled for November and December Burgdorf served as general counsel for the system from 2005 until May of 2013 He resigned under pressure as regents grew increasingly critical of a report he authored regarding a now-defunct forgivable loan program for faculty at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law who has openly questioned the thoroughness of the report felt the report was "not critical enough" of the flagship campus he had positive working relationships with the regents when Gene Powell of San Antonio became board chairman in 2011 Previous regents had set the tone of the board but Burgdorf said Powell allowed individual regents to pursue any actions they desired In addition to approaching the regent position in a way that Burgdorf said was not consistent with the intent of state law Hall "treated the staff like hired help." Hall has not yet had a chance to testify though committee members indicated that they would like to hear from him before Thanksgiving said the regent was eager to share his side of the story with lawmakers Legislators also heard from Teresa Spears, the former director of Gov. Rick Perry's appointments office One of the charges against Hall is that he may have omitted information from his application to be a regent — a position appointed by the governor — that would have affected his nomination Spears said she did not believe Hall tried to mislead the appointments office the director of the Senate Nominations Committee told the committee it would be hard to retroactively determine if certain information would have altered the course of an individual's confirmation the process has largely operated on an honor system they are working to create a more robust vetting process State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer asked the UT System to bring Dan Sharphorn — Burgdorf's replacement — to testify before the committee The system had asserted attorney-client privilege with regard to certain aspects of Burgdorf's testimony preventing him from sharing details of some of his past conversations with regents Fischer questioned whether the system was allowed to assert such a privilege the hearing adjourned without resolving that issue Texas Tribune donors or members may be quoted or mentioned in our stories, or may be the subject of them. However, as their focus is commonly regional or local, these data are often not submitted to global data repositories such as the NOAA World Data Service for Palaeoclimatology database (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/) but instead Even if documentary records are incorporated into databases they may not always be organized in a manner suitable for climate scientists particularly when working with time series we focus exclusively on quantitative document-based time series data subset of the body of documentary climate data Flow chart depicting the generation of the documentary dataset The next step was to compile the actual data. Not all inventoried series are available in electronic form, and some are subject to a restrictive data policy. We downloaded the series from 14 databases (Table 1) and contacted many authors directly in cases when a dataset was not available in a repository we only compiled data series that are open access and allow us to redistribute the data under a CC-BY license Extract from Rykachev16 showing the dates of freezing and thawing of the Neva River in St The number of overlapping years between proxy and climate series had to be superior to 20 years (for all African wetness/dryness indices we accepted 10 overlapping years as otherwise no evaluation would have been possible on the entire dataset) The starting date was usually dictated by the start of the reference dataset the end date by the end of the documentary dataset (see exceptions below) but never later than 1950 CE in order to avoid calibrating a forward model in a period in which climate or environment are no longer comparable with earlier periods Schematic figure of forward modeling approach Data format with 27 columns using the example of the first line of series 1213 (transposed for clearer visualization) monthly three-dimensional climate reconstruction covering 1600–2003 CE EKF400v2 is based on an off-line assimilation approach of proxy data (e.g. and early instrumental data into an ensemble of atmospheric model simulations in many cases the documentary data were assimilated in EKF400v2 (and hence datasets are not independent) while in cases where no information is locally available EKF400v2 basically represents a model simulation Some documentary indices continue into the instrumental era as the authors have complemented them with degraded instrumental data or have used instrumental data in addition to documentary data These data may then not be independent of instrumental data These values were not removed from DOCU-CLIM the calibration period in such cases is limited to years before 1900 CE information on whether a value was from a documentary source or from degraded observations was added to the “META” column Map of all documentary data categorized according to (top left) the variable R-code to read the files is given in the Supplementary material as many continue to the start of instrumental observations or even beyond Number of values in the DOCU-CLIM dataset as a function of year and type of proxy Time series of the freeze-up date of three Russian rivers Here we report the results of our independent validation, as described in Section 2. In Fig. 9 we show correlations for forward models that we calibrated in gridded instrument-based datasets. All records that have no overlap with observations (and thus evaluation was not possible) are denoted by grey dotted circles. Map of Pearson correlation coefficients between documentary data and forward modelled data (top) p-values (bottom) and histogram showing the distribution of the correlation coefficients Grey dotted circles indicate series where no evaluation was possible which the documentary data were compared with may have substantial errors in these pre-1900 years several significant correlations can be found in locations including southern Africa and Australia The highest correlations are observed for temperature indices which are however often not fully independent from instrumental data in the overlapping period also found for ice phenological data and grape harvest dates The evaluation of the 421 records with models demonstrates that many documentary series have significant potential for quantitative applications the series that were not evaluated (due to the absence of instrumental series in the vicinity or total lack of overlap) will require further investigation and consultation in the literature before incorporation into a climate reconstruction The dataset contains information on the correlation with corresponding forward models This information should be carefully considered before using the data Although climate reconstruction is the primary aim the data can also be used in the form of individual time series Standardized climatic anomalies in 1835 (with respect to the period 1841–1870) for (top) documentary data and (bottom) EKF400v2 Variables include temperature in (left) spring to summer and (middle) autumn to early winter and (right) annual precipitation R code for generating the plots in this paper, for reading in all files and extracting desired information, and for the forward modeling is available from https://github.com/sbroennimann/DOCU-CLIM IPCC.
