This past Thursday at Centro Culturale Chiasso
the world-famous pianist Marc-Andrè Hamelin gave a recital with some well-known pieces and some of his “pet project” composers like Medtner
in the form of Rondò in A minor K.511 from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
3: “A Festive Dance.” The concert finished with real fireworks by Sergei Rachmaninoff: Etude-Tableau op
any form of introduction of the Canadian pianist Marc-Andrè Hamelin is unnecessary
Due to his worldwide activities and more than 50 discs
he is one of the most well-known pianists today
but none of them can beat his steady performance of the last decades
remaining firmly anchored in the musically excellent level and a “nearly superhuman technique,” as it was described by the legendary critic Harold C
the expectations were quite high for the evening
The choice to start this recital with Mozart’s Rondò
K.511 and its delicate colors was a wise one
no more problems; everything dissolved in this apparently easy music
overcoming the repetitive structure of this score
3 is one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s early sonatas
composed in 1795 and dedicated to his teacher Joseph Haydn
It is a virtuoso and dynamic piece that showcases Beethoven’s evolving style and mastery of the classical form
“Allegro con brio,” is vibrant and energetic
contrasting lyrical themes and powerful chords
well-planned rendering with a profound knowledge of the structure
“Adagio,” a serene and expressive slow movement
song-like quality and is known for its emotional depth
the pianist showcased his enormous capacity for control
characterized by sudden dynamic shifts and syncopation
Maybe some more agogic liberty would’ve been helpful
the real realm of Marc-André Hamelin followed
were a nice opportunity for the pianist to finally display his famous steel-like technique — a real treat for the numerous public and truly appreciated
Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his Piano Sonata No
during a particularly productive period in his life
shortly after finishing his Choral Symphony “The Bells.” This work is one of his most challenging and masterful compositions
embodying the emotional intensity and technical brilliance characteristic of his late Romantic style
interpreters prefer his preludes or etude-tableaux
That might be the reason why Rachmaninoff revised the sonata in 1931
making substantial cuts to the original score to streamline the piece and improve its overall coherence
though some pianists prefer a hybrid version that combines elements of both
Hamelin wisely has chosen the short version
from thunderous fortissimos to delicate pianissimos
The performer must capture the emotional breadth of the work
from despair and struggle to triumph and transcendence
maybe not at the same speed as Vladimir Horowitz used to play
but nevertheless always well-controlled and spectacular

A jury at the Cantonal Criminal Court in Lugano on Thursday found a 28-year-old Somali man guilty of murder and sentenced him to 17 years' imprisonment
The man will also be deported from the country for 15 years
the 28-year-old went to his 50-year-old victim's apartment in Chiasso early in the morning on March 1
2024 because he wanted to buy cocaine from him
The Somali man stabbed his victim at least 17 times for the "minor motive" that the man he had visited did not have any cocaine for him
The presiding judge described the fact that the perpetrator stabbed the 50-year-old further times
even though the first stab would have been enough to kill him
The 28-year-old had acted with "particularly pronounced ruthlessness"

United center back Emiliano Dudar has signed with FC Chiasso
Dudar fell victim to the fact that both of United's starting center backs from last season
improved their play and consistency to a level where Dudar could not break through
I know many of us wanted Dudar back for 2013
to be the rock solid third center back that he was last season
it looks like he still wants to prove himself as a starter
even if he now has to go to a league that is a step down from MLS
it is hard to keep three starting quality players at one position on your team unless one of them is still on their rookie
with Ben Olsen coming out and saying that Daniel Woolard will likely be the third center back this upcoming season
I would personally prefer that Woolard stay out left and that we move Ethan White up the depth chart
especially considering how thin we are at fullback right now
But talk of depth charts is still premature
as we know that more signings will be coming

Paradox Engineering SA announces the delivery of its smart lighting management platform in Chiasso
Part of a wider plan that will support the City of Chiasso “turning smarter” and developing Smart Grid and Smart City solutions
the project supports the management and control of the public lighting thanks to Paradox Engineering’s PE.AMI
the Company’s open standard multipurpose platform supporting future proof lighting management and multiple other Smart City applications
Strongly committed to innovation and sustainability
Chiasso has been certified last year for the second time by the Energy City label
The choice for Paradox Engineering’s PE.AMI reflects the City’s forward-looking approach
fully recognizing the high value of PE.AMI wireless network platform in supporting the City’s environmental sustainability and energy efficiency objectives
Implemented in close collaboration with AGE SA
power and gas in Chiasso and neighboring municipalities
the project actually focuses on the management and control of 150 OSRAM-SITECO street lights and some IP cameras for traffic video surveillance in the area of the ring road of the town
PE.AMI will support a WiFi hotspot network in the area of the municipal swimming pool
The project has already entered its second phase that includes the remote control and management of existing power
water and gas meters with Advanced Meter Reading functionalities
the PE.AMI network will thus open the way to the implementation of the concept of Smart Grid
which plays a key role on the agenda and priorities of both the City and AGE SA
The choice for PE.AMI technology reaffirms Chiasso’s and AGE’s orientation to innovation and set their pioneering position in Ticino in setting the path to turn the City into a Smart City thanks to a solution supporting the City livability
PE.AMI’s open standard technologies and full interoperability
support existing infrastructures – therefore preserving past investments – and enable the extension to different applications over time
along with Cities’ evolving needs and challenges in a totally future-proof approach
“We are proud that our technology has been chosen by the City of Chiasso – said Gianni Minetti
as shown by the successes with projects around the world such as those in San Francisco
but we are also strongly linked to the territory and are glad that our technologies bring value to it.”
“By chosing PE.AMI for street lighting management AGE expresses its firm intention to stay up to date by balancing the benefits of accurate costs and power management (guaranteed by the technological evolution) and
the continuous improvement of the service offered to its customers”
to work at the integration of new services such as free Wi-Fi
video surveillance and other services supporting citizens’ needs in the future.”
All over the world
policy frameworks and sustainability and livability objectives are changing the way Cities and governments are thinking about lighting
Municipalities and utilities are increasingly looking for smarter solutions to effectively optimize their public lighting assets as it offers tremendous opportunities to reduce operational costs and energy consumption
the urban lighting infrastructure is the ideal carrier to implement city-wide networks enabling multiple wireless service delivery applications
common use scalable network platform this in turn leads to a more efficient and integrated approach to address the city’s challenges
also allowing shared investments and a much quicker return on investments

Femme nue marchant et personnage au loin I (1960; Illustration for the frontispiece of Jacques Dupin
Few other personalities from the local financial scene played such a decisive role in shaping events over several decades
It goes unmentioned on Wikipedia that Rainer Gut worked for UBS
in the 1960s and was responsible for its headquarters in New York
UBS sought a resolution for its problematic participation in IG Farben
were busy shuttling back and forth to New York with Gut
but Gut left empty-handed in the promotion race
Holzach eventually offered him a consolation prize of sorts with the position of director of the commercial department in Zurich responsible for major international customers
The self-confident and well-connected Gut respectfully declined
He had greater ambitions and wanted to stay in traditional finance
he left and joined the investment bank Lazard Frères
acquiring the foundational knowledge for later initiatives at Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB)
he always remained connected to UBS at heart
which became apparent in 1996 (see point 8)
Gut moved from Lazard Frères to Swiss American Corporation in New York
investment banking affiliate of what was then Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA
the Swiss banking industry experienced its biggest scandal
the then-head of the SKA (later Credit Suisse) branch in the Ticino border town of Chiasso placed billions in client funds with the holding company of a Liechtenstein institution
which were booked off the bank's balance sheet
This criminal activity led to a huge debacle
Wuffli, father of future UBS Group CEO Peter Wuffli
and the then chairman of the General Management
it turned out he was only the biggest pawn
He was one of the few young executives not been involved in the debacle
He succeeded Wuffli and was promoted to spokesman of the General Management in May 1977 before being appointed its chairman in 1982
With Gut's rise to the top of the SKA power structure
The man from central Switzerland didn't tick the boxes of the traditional requirements of the Zurich bank
he was often overlooked for a suite on the executive floor
Gut ushered in a more international and unabashedly American era
Several decades followed under the aegis of Gut
who became the uncontested ruler of Zurich's Paradeplatz and one of the most influential string pullers in the Swiss economy through a series of board of directorships
not only did SKA go on a PR offensive by sponsoring the «Tour de Suisse» cycling race in 1978
but it also transformed itself from a bank for Zurich's elite into a financial institution that addressed the middle classes
an important decision in order to stand up to other major Swiss banks
it became increasingly involved in US investment banking
a domain with which Gut had always been associated since his Lazard Frères days
after numerous transactions and reorganizations
should've helped Credit Suisse achieve global stature
Although Gut managed to gather some of the best investment bankers around him
Credit Suisse investment banking was a ruinous enterprise that ultimately contributed to the downfall of the entire bank
The book was written with help from Credit Suisse's chief historian at the time, Joseph Jung
it lacks the necessary distance from Gut in terms of content
but it nonetheless contains a wealth of data and information of great value to appraise Swiss banking history
and already contemplative man but also notes he kept his ambitions in mind as he strove for power
Credit Suisse First Boston «Culture Clash»
Credit Suisse undoubtedly made the most progress in US investment banking compared to all other major Swiss banks
Those under Gut's leadership always faced accusations they were using the stable earnings from private banking to subsidize the volatile and short-term business of Credit Suisse's Wall Street bankers
This resulted in a transatlantic culture war that Credit Suisse could never bring under control
Credit Suisse's management's misjudgments proved fatal
This was the case with the oversized billion-dollar takeover of US investment bank Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) in 2000
The excesses surrounding Greensill and Archegos in the last few years also weighed down Credit Suisse before it finally disappeared
there have also been times when Credit Suisse and the Swiss financial industry benefited from Gut's American flair
This was the case in the late 1990s when Switzerland was embroiled in the dormant assets of Jewish bank clients and their heirs
The hard-fought disputes with the US judiciary
finally ended in a settlement on August 12
when Swiss banks agreed to pay Holocaust victims 1.25 billion Swiss francs
Gut who brought about this important resolution for the Swiss banks and the reputation of the Swiss financial industry
Gut submitted a merger proposal to his counterpart at SBG
who was caught off guard while on a Florida golf vacation
Before Gut could confirm his exploratory talk with a letter to the SBG Board of Directors
SBG had brought the case to the public via the «Tages-Anzeiger.» On April 9
the newspaper ran the headline: «Credit Suisse wants power over SBG.»
his proposal wasn't entirely pulled out of thin air
Gut announced the restructuring of Credit Suisse Holding
an international financial group worthy of the name was created in Switzerland
Credit Suisse Group comprised four largely independent divisions: Private Banking
The real novelty was those in charge now had targets for return on equity in each business unit
Credit Suisse was responding to an increasingly influential group in the financial world: shareholders and financier Martin Ebner
who helped the concept of shareholder value make a breakthrough and take off in Switzerland
Against radical changes in the banking industry in general
pursued a merger with the Winterthur insurance group
This vision of bancassurance emerged based on the idea for banks to offer insurance products and vice versa.
Credit Suisse and Winterthur joined forces
the bancassurance dream proved unsustainable in practice in Switzerland
where two entirely different corporate cultures clashed and failed to deliver added value
to sell Winterthur during a difficult time for the ailing bank
It was eventually sold to France's Axa Group in 2006
Gut and Tidjane Thiam in Spring 2015 in Zurich (Image: finews.com)
Gut remained closely associated with Credit Suisse as an honorary chairman
he maintained an office at the bank's headquarters on Zurich's Paradeplatz
where he would sometimes walk to the nearby bank-owned Savoy Baur en Ville hotel
he was still very concerned about the bank's dramatic development
Gut was working towards (then chairman) Urs Rohner stepping down as chairman before 2021
which was the discussion in Zurich banking circles at the time
Gut accused Rohner of passively watching the conflict between Group CEO Tidjane Thiam and asset management chief Iqbal Khan for too long
Rohner had not mediated but facilitated Khan's move to UBS
His level of concern is remarkable in that Gut had surprisingly paid his respects at the media conference in Zurich when Thiam was appointed in the spring of 2015 (picture above)
A mutual admiration was palpable between the two
and Gut expressed much hope that went unfulfilled

Philippines – Alex Eala’s clay court season got off to a horrendous start as she was sent crashing out in both the singles and doubles events of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) W60 Chiasso Open in Switzerland
The 17-year-old Eala could not find her groove in the opening round of the singles competition as she was thoroughly outclassed by 32-year-old Alexandra Cadantu-Ignatik of Romania
reached a career-high ranking of 59th and has won 11 ITF titles
She has also made the main draw of all four Grand Slam events.
She used her experience to the hilt and did her homework as she exploited what is now an open secret in the pro circuit
Cadantu-Ignatik immediately broke serve in the opening game of the first set
She in fact converted three break points as she took the fight out of the 215th world ranked Eala from the get-go
It was not until the third game of the second set that Eala finally held serve to earn for herself her first game point for the match at 1-2.
But any hopes of a comeback was immediately quelled by Cadantu-Ignatik
who claimed the next three games as Eala faced an insurmountable 1-5 deficit.
Eala did manage to hold serve the next game but that was the closest she would get as Cadantu-Ignatik sealed the match in the eighth game
So dominant was Cadantu-Ignatik that she never faced a break point the entire match and won 55 points as against to just 34 by her Filipina foe.
Eala also was eliminated on Tuesday in the doubles competition as she and 19-year-old Czech Barbora Palicova lost in heartbreaking fashion to fourth seeds Anna Siskova of the Czech Republic and Indonesian veteran Beatrice Gumulya
Eala and Palicova seemed on their way to a monumental comeback after bagging the second set and saving a couple of match points in the decider.
The teenage duo even had a chance to close out the match and pull off an upset after they led 11-10 in the third set
convert after as they allowed Siskova and Gumulya to pocket the next three points for the match
Eala is set to remain in Switzerland as she prepares for next week’s Raiffeisen Bellinzona Ladies Open by Rado

the 26-year-old Argentine clay court specialist made the 2020 French Open women’s singles semifinals and the 2021 French Open women’s doubles semifinals.

Eala blasted Waltert in straight sets in the W25 Manacor in Spain in 2021
Waltert got back at Eala twice by defeating her in three sets in the W15 Manacor and the W60 Bellinzona in Switzerland that same year
Third seed Ylena In-Albon is 137th in the world and will also enjoy the home court edge as a Swiss national
the Filipina tennis ace will be in for a tantalizing match-up in the second round where she could face either seventh seed Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania or wild card entry Elina Svitolina of Ukraine
51 Ruse made the women’s singles second round of both the Australian Open and the US Open
and this year’s Australian Open women’s doubles semifinals
had made the women’s singles semifinals of Wimbledon and the US Open

She will team up with 19-year-old Barbora Palicova of the Czech Republic as they face the 4th seeds Anna Siskova of the Czech Republic and Indonesian veteran Beatrice Gumulya
