the Hobbits live in the Shire in their distinctive dwellings known as Hobbit Holes
They're really just homes built into hillsides
with banked earth sitting atop the basic structures
as people have been taking up residence in similar dwellings for many years
And the idea has now taken a firm hold with those interested in working with
The Swiss version of the Shire is the Earth House Estate Lättenstrasse located in Dietikon
which is where all of the exterior images in the article gallery are from
The company responsible for the Earth Houses
has built dozens more similar homes across the country
which is where the interior images are sourced from
The Earth Houses are so called because they're designed to reside within their environment
blending into the natural contours of the land rather than merely set down on top of it
which makes a lot of sense in terms of insulation
though such a design will clearly not fit in with everybody's aesthetic sensibilities
The houses surrounding the Lättenstrasse estate are conventional
meaning this complex of underground houses certainly stands out
At least to those who know of its existence
Because of the way the houses are built into the land
no one would spot the estate who wasn't actively looking for it
The plot of land the Earth Houses are built on covers 4,000 square meters (43,055 sq ft)
with each individual house covering between 60 meters squared (646 sq ft) and 200 meters squared (2,153 sq ft)
There are three houses consisting of three rooms
The houses all surround a U-shaped hill with a pond and wetland forming the courtyard
The sleeping area is set in the north of the building
with skylights allowing natural light to seep down to the lowest levels of the house
The basement and garage are constructed by conventional means
while the ground floor of the house is constructed using shotcrete
Insulation is provided by a layer of recycled foamed glass
while a root-resistant polymer bitumen attached to the shotcrete makes the whole thing waterproof
We have seen similar efforts before here on Gizmag, with former soccer player Gary Neville's underground house in Bolton and Simon Dale's Welsh Hobbit Hole house both gaining attention
But this is the first estate of Hobbit-style dwellings featured

Earth House Estate Lttenstrasse is located in Dietikon
The viridescent mounds of earth have the homes tucked in beneath them
It's like stumbling upon a secret underground society that has balanced the best of modern design and energy-efficient living
They appear like cozy huts to live in but are actually quite spacious inside
There is even an artificial lake in the center
and room to grow vegetation on the property
Being that the homes are protected by a layer of earth
they have natural insulation during the winter that allows them to use only a third of the energy a normal home would consume
The houses also boast cool temperatures during the summer
making air conditioners and other forms of temperature modification devices unnecessary
Vetsch also prides himself on the natural integration of the homes without having to add or remove any extra land or compromise the integrity of the natural landscape
He says that they are “not putting a box on top of nature but making the architecture subordinate to nature

Sikyong Penpa Tsering addressing the Tibetan community of Zurich
the democratically elected leader of the exile Tibetan people
embarked on his five-nation tour starting with Zurich on 28 April 2024
and Presidents and Vice-Presidents of Tibetan communities in Switzerland and Liechtenstein
the community extended a warm welcome to Sikyong as he arrived on his second round of official visits there
Sikyong Penpa Tsering’s first engagement was at the Tibet Institute Rekon
Representative of the Monastic Community and Ven
Abbot Geshe Tenzin Jangchup along with Representative of Tibet Bureau Geneva and President of Tibetan Community of Switzerland and Liechtenstein
Sikyong engaged with the Tibetan community at Dietikon
including a brief interaction with the teachers and heads of the Weekend Tibetan language school
Sikyong emphasised everyone to remember and appreciate the dedicated contributions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and elder Tibetans for setting up this unparalleled exile community with well established democratic system to maintain Tibetan freedom struggle while imploring the newer generations to uphold their legacies
Highlighting the importance of the continued existence and relevance of the Central Tibetan Administration in Tibetans’ pursuit of freedom
“Since we are unsure if someone with His Holiness’ level of influence and impact will take the helm
it is crucial that this institution must endure in order to safeguard the Tibetan freedom movement going forward.”
Sikyong further apprised the gathering of 16th Kashag’s official undertakings to capacitate and strengthen the operations of the Central Tibetan Administration
with regard to the recent comment made by Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson on back-channel communication between the Central Tibetan Administration and the People’s Republic of China
“Negotiation is the only way forward for resolving the Tibet-China conflict and the Central Tibetan Administration would continue making appeals to the government and international community to urge the Chinese government to resume the dialogue.”
Sikyong urged the Chinese government to start enacting constructive reforms within Tibet instead of giving His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan leaders instructions on what to do or not
Sikyong is set to meet with Swiss parliamentarians in the capital city of Bern

the Zurich Protection & Rescue Operations Center received a report that an injured
lifeless person had been found in an apartment in Dietikon
according to a statement from the cantonal police
An emergency doctor who was immediately called out was only able to determine that the 44-year-old had died
Investigations at the scene revealed that the Swiss man "most likely died violently"
A 30-year-old Swiss man suspected of the crime was arrested at the scene the same day
while a 20-year-old man from Sri Lanka was arrested a few days later by the Zurich cantonal police
Two further suspects were arrested on Friday
The two suspects are a 27-year-old Swiss national and a 34-year-old Tunisian
A total of four arrests were made in connection with the altercation
The Public Prosecutor's Office I for Serious Violent Crime has applied to the compulsory measures court for pre-trial detention for the two men arrested last Friday
The two men previously arrested have since been remanded in custody by the compulsory measures court
The course of events and the motive for the crime are still the subject of ongoing investigations
The presumption of innocence applies to all suspects until the final conclusion of the proceedings

the Californians had only pushed the construction of lounges in the USA in combination with charging parks
Tesla is now beginning to implement its lounge concept in Europe as well
The lounge offers a play and painting area for children
table football and console games as well as pull-up bars
The charging park in the Silbernquartier in Dietikon is now the 18th Supercharger location in Switzerland
along with 250 locations with destination chargers
Tesla’s European charging network has now grown to more than 450 Supercharger locations and more than 5000 Destination Chargers

This included the parking area and a comprehensive building refurbishment
the rental space of 5,500 sqm was handed over to the two retailers for the interior fit-out
SBB and the city of Dietikon want to develop the station area into an attractive location for living and working and a public transport hub
The project competition was won by a design by Hosoya Schaefer Architekten from Zurich and Bryum Landschaftsarchitekten from Basel
The SBB sub-project envisages preserving and extending the station building from 1977
The apartments in the building will be gently renovated and further affordable residential units are planned in the extension
On the first floor The lower floors of the station building will house travel-related uses and a bicycle station
office and service uses are planned for the lower floors and apartments above
The first floor will be used by the public
SBB plans to expand the center on the north site: According to the project website
the first floors will be used for public and residential purposes
the upper floors for apartments and the second floor of the high-rise building for office and service space
A service and office building is being constructed opposite the district building
According to the factsheet for the project
a total of 14,000 square meters of residential space
3,300 square meters of office space and 1,700 square meters for retail and services will be created

The winning project also provides for a redesign of the public space
A tree canopy will connect the center of Dietikon with the train station
The final stops of the bus station will be divided into two bus islands
Under the tree canopy is a chaussiered area
which is intended as a space for movement and recreation
This overall concept gives the area a strong identity and enhances the station area as a public transport hub and at the same time as an attractive place to stay and meet
writes the town of Dietikon in a press release
The unsealing and greening will also greatly improve the urban climate
The four-star Hotel Conti on Hammerstrasse in Dietikon was forced to close in the wake of the corona pandemic
and now the building and real estate group DHG Holding is its new owner
DHG Holding plans to convert the hotel rooms into 90 studios
the aim is to meet "the unbroken demand for single rental apartments in an urban environment." The studios are to be rented out at a flat monthly rate that starts at CHF 1,200 net
The Hotel Conti has a net floor area of around 2,500 sqm
The development on Lägernstrasse in Dietikon comprises 13 apartment buildings that are now in need of renovation and no longer meet today's requirements
for example in terms of age-appropriate living
Swiss Life and Solida Versicherungen are the landowners of seven plots of land between Römerstrasse
the majority of which belongs to Swiss Life
The site borders directly on the route of the Limmattalbahn and is therefore in the area of the planned city boulevard
which is why the city of Dietikon is also interested in its further development
it signed an urban development contract with Swiss Life in which the insurer undertakes to build a sustainable construction project (Minergie P-Eco) and
to create a new public square and a public bicycle parking facility in the area of the Limmattalbahn stop
A total of eight residential buildings with around 175 rental apartments are to be built
The municipal council approved the design plan in May
but critics of the development have lodged a referendum
They complain that the new building project will result in the loss of affordable housing
On the basis of the cantonal planning and building law (PBG)
the city could have demanded that some of the new apartments be rented at low prices
but the city and municipal councils have not done so
The referendum will be held on November 27
demolition of the apartment buildings is expected to begin in the second half of 2024
The new buildings will be ready for occupancy in mid-2027 at the earliest

the last two large retail spaces were leased on a long-term basis to the Migros Zürich cooperative and to a major European retailer of toys and baby articles
Head of Portfolio and Transactions at Hiag
This means that the retail park at the "Silbern" retail location is virtually fully let
The openings of the Migros supermarket and the toy store
which together occupy around 5,500 sqm of space
are scheduled for the start of the Christmas shopping season next November

Karte in Vollbildansicht öffnen
