A screenshot in a village chat causes the SVP Dornach to stumble: Candidate Chris Rothenfluh is relieved of all offices - and the election campaign goes off the rails
A digital storm has broken out in tranquil Dornach in the canton of Solothurn: A screenshot was shared in a WhatsApp village chat with around 400 members at the weekend - and it caused political fallout even before the buttons stopped clicking. This was reported by "bzbasel.ch".
At the center of the excitement: Christoph Rothenfluh
municipal council candidate and board member of the SVP Dornach
He is accused of making trans-hostile comments on Platform X in the summer of 2023 - towards a Trump supporter
After screenshots of this statement appeared in the chat
Rothenfluh initially denied it - only to later admit authorship to his party
the SVP Dornach relieved Rothenfluh of all his offices
the party clearly distanced itself from "hate speech" and insisted on "respect and decency"
It is questionable whether Rothenfluh will even remain on the list for the municipal elections next Sunday - his withdrawal in the event of an election is already considered certain
A special crisis team has now been set up to examine the internal processes
An extraordinary general meeting after April 13 will clarify how the SVP Dornach will proceed
But the matter also has a political dimension: Giovanni Acconcia
sees the revelations as a targeted campaign against Rothenfluh and his party
the incumbent mayor and one of the four moderators of the village chat
Urech did not stop the discussion even though Rothenfluh was still presumed innocent
The screenshots uncovered were of two newly added chat members with numbers from Germany and the UK - a detail that the SVP interprets as further evidence of a planned action
Urech himself remains calm: He had seen no reason to interrupt the discussion
as no one had been offended and Rothenfluh was a "person of public interest"
He had also spoken to SVP members and Rothenfluh after the allegations became public
The timing could hardly have been more delicate: The municipal council elections are taking place in Dornach next Sunday
in which Rothenfluh would have been a candidate
the second round of the Solothurn cantonal council elections is also taking place - with Daniel Urech as a candidate
a screenshot - and a community that suddenly finds itself in the middle of a political state of emergency
The SVP Dornach is now faced with the task of filling the resulting vacuum - and winning back the trust of voters
brings together a strong field of 11 in one of the last three major prep races for the Kentucky Derby in four weeks
the other two being the Wood Memorial Stakes in New York and the Santa Anita Derby in California
Each of the three races awards 200 total Kentucky Derby qualifying points to eligible horses
with 100-50-25-15-10 going to the top five finishers
The Grade 1 Blue Grass at 1 1/8 miles features the rematch between Dornoch and Sierra Leone
who were separated by a nose when first and second
in the G2 Remsen Stakes at the same distance last fall
Dornoch won the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes while Sierra Leone won the G2 Risen Star Stakes
so both colts enter the Blue Grass in peak form
outbattles Sierra Leone to narrowly prevail in the Remsen (G2)
Another horse entering off a strong effort is Encino
who won the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes five weeks ago
Epic Ride finished second in that race and is another who may have a say in the outcome
Just a Touch finished second in the G3 Gotham Stakes last month and hopes to add the necessary points to join the field in the starting gate at Churchill Downs next month with a top effort
Good Money will be trying to improve off his fourth-place finish in the G3 Tampa Bay Derby on March 9
Seize the Grey will be attempting to improve off a third-place finish in the G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks two weeks ago
If he does he may give Hall of Fame trainer D
Wayne Lukas another Derby entrant to go along with Just Steel
who finished second in the G1 Arkansas Derby last weekend
who finished third in the G3 Lecomte Stakes when last seen in January
is another colt needing first- or second-place points to run in the Derby
Be You and Top Conor both take a significant jump in class after earning their first career wins in their most recent starts
Mugatu has won once in 11 career starts and was most recently eighth in the Rushaway Stakes two weeks ago
Analysis and top contenders:There is little doubt this year’s Blue Grass Stakes goes through Dornoch and Sierra Leone
both who have demonstrated exceptional talent in eight combined career starts to date
Sierra Leone will get top billing based on the authoritative way he won the Risen Star in his most recent start
and because the effort came at the same 1 1/8-mile distance of the Blue Grass
Sierra Leone lagged back in ninth in the early stages in a field of 12 and was still seventh with a quarter mile to run
Showing an incredible burst of sustained speed when asked to run by jockey Tyler Gaffalione
Sierra Leone was fourth after another 220 yards had been run
then was first after another 100 yards or so
That effort earned the colt a 98 Equibase Speed Figure which is highly likely to be improved upon in his second race after coming back from 2 ½ months off
Sierra Leone rallied from 10th to the lead in the blink of an eye
in the Remsen Stakes in December only to beaten in the final yards by Dornoch
who had run three times prior to that compared to once for Sierra Leone
Not only did his inexperience cost him the win that day
it might have been the case Sierra Leone suffered from a lack of focus after making the lead
This was remedied by the addition of blinkers for the Risen Star and is the reason I believe Dornoch will not finish in front of Sierra Leone in the Blue Grass
as well as in the Kentucky Derby next month
Dornoch is a very talented horse whose sire Good Magic won the 2018 Blue Grass Stakes before a runner-up finish in the Kentucky Derby. Additionally, although it has been bandied about quite a bit this Derby season, some of you may not know Dornoch is also a full brother to 2023 Derby winner Mage
who was also sired by Good Magic out of the dam Puca
Dornoch has certainly lived up to the expectation of his brother
as he finished second in his first two races and has won all three since then including the Remsen Stakes in December and the Fountain of Youth in March following three months away from the races
Since his win in the Remsen came at the distance of the Blue Grass
the fact the Fountain of Youth victory came at a shorter distance isn’t a concern
particularly noting Dornoch earned a career-best 102 figure in the Fountain of Youth which can be expected to be improved upon in his second start as a 3-year-old
Dornoch put in a very strong half-mile drill which was the best of 35 at the distance on the day
setting the stage for what could be an epic battle with Sierra Leone in the race
The rest of the field, with their best Equibase Speed Figures, is Be You (94), Epic Ride (98), Good Money (82), Lat Long (88), Mugatu (92), Seize the Grey (93) and Top Conor (79).

biodynamic farming and Anthroposophical Medicine are rooted in the anthroposophical approach developed by Rudolf Steiner
But the effectiveness of his work was not to be taken for granted
as events organized at and around the Goetheanum for the 100th anniversary of his death on 30 March will illustrate
Rudolf Steiner met with much resistance and his concerns were not always openly received
his view of a creative relationship between the sensory physical and the spiritual world as a source for forces of renewal was not accessible to everyone
he was joined by others with whose help the anthroposophical approach was able to inspire many spheres of life
An exhibition on Rudolf Steiner‘s life and work at the Goetheanum reflects on these developments by tracing his biography chronologically and by presenting the spheres of life inspired by him
The exhibition was developed by Christiane Haid
One of the speakers at the preview will be the National Councillor and member of the ‘Rudolf Steiner 100’ patronage committee
Many public references to Rudolf Steiner can be found in his birthplace Donji Kraljevec in Croatia
Public tributes will be paid to him in the presence of the current mayors of both towns
with the inauguration of a commemorative plaque and a bronze recast of Rudolf Steiner‘s suitcase at the Dornach Arlesheim railway station in Switzerland
there will be a panel discussion on ‘Rudolf Steiner and the 20th/21st century
A conference with a commemorative concert will honour Rudolf Steiner‘s life work with presentations of the contemporary and current areas of research and activity both at the Goetheanum and worldwide and with multiple initiatives around the Goetheanum Campus

Jayson Werth won a World Series title and several National League East division titles during his 15-year MLB career
Now, he looks to become a winning horse owner at the 150th Kentucky Derby
The 2008 World Series Champion with the Philadelphia Phillies is a co-owner of Dornoch, who will come out of the No. 1 post at Churchill Downs on Saturday in horse racing's marquee event of the season

Here's what you need to know about Werth and Dornoch leading into Saturday's Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs:
Who is Jayson Werth?Werth is a retired Major League Baseball player who played for the Toronto Blue Jays
Werth's career took off as a member of the Phillies from 2007-2010
He was a member of the Phillies' 2008 World Series team
a season where he hit 24 home runs and batted .273 at the plate
a former first-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the 1997 MLB Draft
hit a career .267 with a .455 slugging percentage and a .360 on-base percentage while recording nearly 1,500 hits (1,465) and 229 home runs
As noted by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Werth got into horse racing in 2021 following a round of golf with friends in Florida:
"I played baseball for my whole life and then you stop playing baseball and you don't have much to get excited about," Werth told The Inquirer in March
On Wednesday, he joined MLB Network's "MLB Central" to talk about how he got into horse racing and what it's like owning a horse
I never worried about one (baseball) game as long as I lived," Werth said
He added: "It's like winning a postseason game when you win
As previously reported by the Courier-Journal, Werth is a co-owner of Dornoch alongside race horse management group Oracle Bloodstock
The two purchased Dornoch — the brother of 2023 Kentucky Derby champion Mage — in 2022 for $325,000
Werth told MLB Central that he is a 10% owner of Dornoch
Dornoch Kentucky Derby oddsPer the latest odds from CBS Sports and USA Today, Dornoch enters the Kentucky Derby with 20-1 odds to win — which is tied for sixth-best odds with Mystik Dan
Dornoch is coming off a fourth-place finish at Blue Grass Stakes in early April
Here's a full look at how Dornoch has performed in recent races:
The 2024 Kentucky Derby is this weekend
and one horse is trying to match the accomplishment of his brother last year
Dornoch, one of the horses in this year's race, is the direct brother of Mage, the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner. He's the offspring of sire Good Magic, who was second in the 2018 Kentucky Derby, and dam Puca, whose own sire, Big Brown
won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 2008
Dornoch comes from a line of winners and high-finishers in the Kentucky Derby and will be looking to add one more victory out of post 1 in this year's race

After six years of development and testing
the Section for Agriculture at the Goetheanum in Dornach
has handed over study modules on biodynamic farming to Heliopolis University in Cairo
as part of a degree programme in organic agricultural science
explains the concept behind the six training modules: “Our aim from the start was not only to train students in theory but to enable them to connect more deeply with agriculture through practical experience
Practical work in nature promotes a comprehensive understanding of ecological relationships.”
Experience-based learning is challenging and enriching
particularly for students with an urban background
for example when they determine the state of the compost by its smell
make yoghurt and curd cheese from cow’s milk and clean and cut vegetables for hundreds of lunches in the canteen
They also witness the slaughtering of cows and the processing of their meat
“This allows them to experience agriculture and nutrition as they activate their senses,” says Jasmin Peschke
head of Nutrition in the Section for Agriculture
the students work out the profitability of growing camomile and processing it into tea and gain insights into the cash flows involved in production
sees the potential long-term effect of this: “Heliopolis University will now make its own contribution to high-quality farming.” In Egypt
more than 1,000 small farmers per month are currently planning to convert to organic and biodynamic farming
Youri Hashem and Angela Hofmann from Egypt were involved in organizing the modules
as were the biodynamic advisors Maja Kolar from Slovenia and Peter Kunz and the late Reto Ingold from Switzerland
The course takes place at the beginning of each semester on the biodynamic farm in Sekem
and is attended by seventy to ninety students

Rudi Bind and Ueli Hurter explore this theme in their book ‘Biodynamic!’ on the ‘birth of biodynamic farming at the beginning of the ecological movement.’
Biodynamic agriculture was initiated a hundred years ago
its dedication to healthy soil and food also provides impulses for a healthy social life
The method is implemented by both smallholders and large biodynamic enterprises
The biodynamic brand ‘Demeter’ is known around the world
the foundations of biodynamic agriculture less so
the Section for Agriculture at the Goetheanum explores this approach as the continuation of a human cultural impulse and invites the eco-activist Vandana Shiva to speak at the Goetheanum about the relationship between human beings and the earth
The Section for Agriculture at the Goetheanum sees a possible option for action in the idea of Rudolf Steiner‘s biodynamic farm organism
One feature of this is starting from the individual conditions of a region
Dornoch is one of 20 horses expected to enter the 2024 Kentucky Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs
Spots for the Run for the Roses are earned by gaining points through a series of Kentucky Derby prep races that began last September
The post-position draw for the Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday
Post time for the Kentucky Derby is set for 6:57 p.m
Dornoch will enter the Kentucky Derby off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Blue Grass on April 6 at Keeneland
He currently ranks eighth on the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard with 75
Price tag: $325,000 at 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale
Owners: West Paces Racing (Larry Connolly)
which finished 12th with Vekoma and 14th with Tax in 2019
Best finish was third with Essential Quality in 2021
Last race: Fourth in Grade 1 Blue Grass on April 6 at Keeneland
What they’re saying: “I may have shipped him in here a little too close to the race,” Gargan said of the Blue Grass
referring to Dornoch’s arrival at Keeneland two days before the race

Six sold out performances including a gala event with Klaus Florian Vogt – that is Richard Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ at the Goetheanum directed by Jasmin Solfaghari
Three more performances will follow in 2025 as a cooperation between Pamy Mediaproductions and the Goetheanum Stage
It all started with Alexander von Glenck’s idea to stage Richard Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ at the Goetheanum and he managed to convince Jasmin Solfaghari
who has 30 years’ international opera experience
She then put together an experienced team including Walter Schütze for the stage set and costumes
Roland Fister as musical director and Andreas Klippert to conduct the choir
She also managed to interest experienced colleagues from the Bayreuth Wagner Festivals and internationally renowned singers such as Klaus Florian Vogt in this project
The Goetheanum as an event venue has a tradition of large productions that bring together eurythmy and drama
for instance Goethe’s unabridged ‘Faust’ parts 1 and 2
What is new at the Goetheanum is that eurythmy appears as an equal art form in an opera of this dimension
The collaboration turned out to be fruitful and the production was an immediate success: all performances sold out within a few hours
The media and audiences were impressed by the production and welcomed the combination with eurythmy (direction Stefan Hasler
supported by Severin Fraser) as original and convincing
director Jasmin Solfaghari remains convinced by the general atmosphere at the Goetheanum
the great view and the special auditorium with its coloured-glass windows and columns”
“The eurythmy adds complexity; it is fascinating how the colleagues make their decisions on which musical units are presented where
The gestures support the movement language of the singers.” According to Stefan Hasler the eurythmy ensemble experienced that “less movement is also very effective if it is targeted and focused.”
Conversations are ongoing between Pamy and the Goetheanum on what will happen after the performances in 2025
For Jasmin Solfaghari this production belongs to the Goetheanum
particularly as a regular audience has established itself
The next performances will be on Palm Sunday

At the end of the 19th century Hermann Linde (1862–1923) was considered one of the eminent orientalist painters of his time
In 1915 Rudolf Steiner put him in charge of the painting of the First Goetheanum’s large cupola
Works from both these creative periods are shown for the first time in two exhibitions
After completing his art studies at academies in Dresden and Weimar (1882–1889)
Tunisia and Egypt and spent several years painting in India
he joined the Dachau artists’ colony where painters such as Carl Spitzweg
Franz Marc and Max Liebermann had also spent time
For Hermann Linde it was a world informed by naturalism and impressionism
4 x 6 metre oil painting ‘The Langar Procession’ he was awarded the gold medal by the Viceroy of India
His work ‘Arabic Cobblers in Cairo’ earned him the silver medal in an exhibition at London‘s Crystal Palace
“It can truly be said that Hermann Linde’s life unfolded in two worlds,” says Christiane Haid
head of Visual Arts and Humanities at the Goetheanum
because after the turn of the century and due to his close collaboration with Rudolf Steiner
Hermann Linde designed the stage sets for the premiere of Rudolf Steiner’s Mystery Dramas in Munich
and was put in charge of the painting work in the First Goetheanum’s large cupola in Dornach
His studies and paintings on Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s ‘Tale of the Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily’ imprinted themselves in the memory of his surroundings

“It’s been my dream to have a horse in the Kentucky Derby
And to be able to share it with my friends

Print Know your Kentucky Derby horses: Epic Ride (Post 20)
Kentucky Derby entrant Epic Ride works out at Churchill Downs on Tuesday
(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: John Ennis
Comment: Epic Ride got into the race when Encino was scratched. When that happens after the draw, it’s called an “also eligible.” Conventional wisdom would say that an AE can’t win the race. But, we’re only a couple years removed from Rich Strike
who also scratched into the race and won the Kentucky Derby at extremely long odds
He’s better than at least a handful of horses in the race
Four of his five races have been run on the synthetic surface at Turfway
He has got some early speed and may challenge for the lead
The question with a lot of these horses is if he has the distance

(Joe Robbins / Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) LOUISVILLE
— Even though all the attention is on the big race there are several major undercard races
some of which include horses from Southern California
Perhaps the best performance came from Formidable Man in the Grade 2 $600,000 American Turf
the colt went to the lead and kept it all the way around before faltering in the stretch and losing by 1½ lengths to Trikari
… I thought he was too big of a number on the odds board (24-1)
but he’s obviously a horse who is on his way up
[On the lead] is kind of where we wanted him
I told [jockey] Luis [Saez] to go ahead and put him in the game and I thought Luis rode him wonderfully.”
the winning jockey on Trikari was Umberto Rispoli
Another Santa Anita-based horse who almost won was Vlahos
who finished third in the Grade 2 $600,000 Pat Day Mile
He led most of the race but got run down by Seize the Grey and Nash
He is trained by Doug O’Neill and was ridden by Edwin Maldonado
“I thought I was going to be able to make the rail
but they pushed me outside,” Maldonado said
He was out of gas but he still kept trying
Heck of a race for a horse going a mile for the first time.”

Comment: This horse is interesting for one reason — his jockey
If this were a television movie the story would be about this 106-1 shot finishing second in the Wood Memorial
He is the only gelding in the race and has only one win
This will be his first race outside of New York

Kentucky Derby entrant Fierceness works out at Churchill Downs on Thursday
(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Todd Pletcher
if he doesn’t win he might not even hit the board
People are wondering if he is a “bounce” horse
His last race was a 13 ½-length win in the Florida Derby
If jockey John Velazquez pushed him down the stretch
Velazquez has won the Derby three times and is considered one of the best jockeys at rating a horse on the lead as evidenced by his win on National Treasure in the Preakness last year
It would be the first Derby win for owner Mike Repole
who sinks millions of dollars every year in buying horses
all in the hopes of winning the Kentucky Derby
Print Know your Kentucky Derby horses: Grand Mo the First (Post 15)
Kentucky Derby entrant Grand Mo the First works out at Churchill Downs on Tuesday
(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Victor Barboza Jr
Comment: Grand Mo the First needed some dropouts to get in the race
He hasn’t won in 2024 nor does he have a stakes win
His first two races were wins on synthetic turf at Gulfstream Park
He then went to Santa Anita and finished third in the Zuma Beach (where his dirt career started)
leading to three consecutive third-place finishes
The colt was a distant third in the Florida Derby behind Fierceness
He does seem to find trouble whenever he runs
There is little to indicate he has what it takes to win against this field at 50-1 morning-line odds
Print Know your Kentucky Derby horses: Domestic Product (Post 14)

(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Chad Brown
Comment: No question this colt should be well rested after not running for eight weeks
His last race was a win in the Tampa Bay Derby on March 9
two of them bullets (fastest of all horses at that distance)
He also has Hall of Fame jockey Irad Ortiz Jr
although Ortiz is winless in seven Derby mounts
all these factors make him a big question mark

Sierra Leone is second at 5-1 followed by Forever Young at 6-1
It’s unusual to have swings of more than one point with this much money in the win pool
Just Steel went from 25-1 to 23-1 and Society Man dropped from 48-1 to 46-1
The longest shot on the board is T O Password

Print Know your Kentucky Derby horses: Endlessly (Post 13)
Kentucky Derby entrant Endlessly works out at Churchill Downs on Wednesday
(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Michael McCarthy
Comment: The big question mark on this horse is he has never run on the dirt
His first four races were on the turf and the last two on synthetic
Those that pay the bills often win those arguments
The horse also won the last El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields
which gives him an entry into the Preakness Stakes
Print A year later
racing is still trying to make sense of Churchill Downs deaths
It was filled with charts and graphs and all the things they teach in presentation school
What it didn’t have was a singular reason for the rash of deaths
“It’s not like we didn’t uncover the causes,” said Lisa Lazarus
“It’s that there wasn’t one singular factor that caused each of the fatalities
But we did learn a whole lot from the investigation and the data we’ve been collecting
With that we’ve been working very closely with Churchill Downs to enhance what was already a very rigorous safety protocol process.”

(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Larry Demeritte
Comment: The story might be better than the horse
Larry Demeritte is only the fourth Black trainer to run in the Kentucky Derby since the Depression
He runs a small stable and has made only 14 starts this year
16 with the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs
There is not a lot to show he can run at this competition level

(Brynn Anderson / Associated Press) LOUISVILLE
— Before the seventh race the track condition was upgraded from muddy to good and then one race later it was upped again to fast
the lack of expected rain played a major role in the track’s condition
Both the track and the bettors prefer a fast track
but because there is not a specific machine that determines a track’s condition it’s left up to humans to give it a designation
Only three times in the 2000s has the track not been fast
Justify won in 2018 and Country House won by disqualification in 2019
Print Know your Kentucky Derby horses: Track Phantom (Post 11)
Kentucky Derby entrant Track Phantom works out at Churchill Downs on Wednesday
(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Comment: Trainer Steve Asmussen is the best trainer to have never won the Kentucky Derby
It’s a statistical oddity that the all-time winningest trainer is 0-25 in the biggest race in the sport
Track Phantom’s only style is running on the front
and he usually comes up short at longer distances
and he faltered when going 1 1/8 and 1 3/16 miles
He finished fourth in the Louisiana Derby
which might be seen as a desperation move to get him to go longer
He did break his maiden at Churchill Downs
Print Latest betting odds: Fierceness remains the favorite

Print Know your Kentucky Derby horses: Forever Young (Post 10)
Kentucky Derby hopeful Forever Young works out at Churchill Downs on Tuesdsay
(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Yoshito Yahagi
Comment: This is the horse where people have the biggest difference of opinions
The conventional wisdom is that you automatically throw out a horse that comes from the Middle East because they are 0-18 in the Derby
This colt looks pretty good as he is undefeated in five starts and won both the Saudi Derby and the UAE Derby
This will be the first Derby start for both the trainer and jockey
trainer Yoshito Yahagi has won two Breeders’ Cup races
The move from the 11 to the 10 gate means he went from being the first horse loaded to the last horse to go in the gate
so there won’t be a lot of standing around
The Derby uses a double-load system where two horses are loaded at the same time
Print Kentucky Derby track conditions upgraded ahead of big race

— The track was upgraded from sloppy to good before the seventh race
The rain has stayed away so far on Saturday and The Weather Channel has also dropped the rain chances into the teens
the chance of precipitation is now 10% with a temperature of 79 degrees
A sloppy track is one that is wet but has no standing water
A good track is one that has not completely dried out and is not as consistent as a fast track
Assigning a track condition is mostly noticed by handicappers but not that important to the general public
Some horses run better on wet tracks while others slip and slide and hate running in the slop
won the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn by eight lengths
so he would be looked at if the track were wet
won the Risen Star at the Fair Grounds on a sloppy track
Print Know your Kentucky Derby horses: Stronghold (Post 17)
Kentucky Derby entrant Stronghold works out at Churchill Downs on Thursday
(Charlie Riedel / Associated Press) Trainer: Phil D’Amato
Stronghold moved from the 18th gate to the 17th
He got his first win in a maiden race at Churchill Downs
Given his somewhat light schedule there is a good chance we haven’t seen his best yet
He won a good stretch battle with Imagination in the Santa Anita Derby
This is the first Derby for both Phil D’Amato and Antonio Fresu
Just being the Santa Anita Derby winner gives you some gravitas
but his best race is not likely to beat the best race of Fierceness or Sierra Leone
Print Future of California horse racing does not look bright

— Phil D’Amato is the only California trainer with a horse in the Kentucky Derby
but will it be his last one as a California trainer
It’s no secret that California racing is in distress with low purses
low attendance and a shrinking number of horses
Without supplemental gaming income the future is not very bright
has been scheduling racing only two days a week
D’Amato was at his barn on Wednesday talking casually to two reporters from California and one from Kentucky
He was asked about the future of racing in California
“I think everybody in California is worried about it,” D’Amato said
trying to work together to see if we can get it going back in the right direction
California definitely is a beautiful place to train
I would like to see California racing keep going

Fierceness at $2.776 million bet to win on him is the favorite and Sierra Leone is the only other horse with more than $2 million bet on him at $2.037 million

Comment: The Wood Memorial has not been a great predictor of Kentucky Derby success as of late. But the backstory of co-owner Emily Bushnell being gifted the horse by her father, Marty Wygod, as a yearling is a true pull-on-your-heartstrings story
The colt does benefit from having trainer Bill Mott

The order of the top horses has not changed since the morning
Sierra Leone is still 5-1 and Forever Young is 6-1
he’ll be the first horse to win both in the Middle East and the Derby
He would also be the first horse bred in Japan to win the race

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce walk to dinner at New York City’s Waverly Inn in October
— The second most asked question at Churchill Downs on Saturday
right behind “Who will win the Derby?” is “Will Taylor Swift be at the Derby?”
While this could be seen as a shameless attempt to get people to read this item
there is a bit of plausibility to the rumor
Travis Kelce is in Louisville and was hanging out with The Chainsmokers on Friday night
Swift was doing a concert in The Netherlands on Friday

Whether it is worth it to fly the almost 5,000 miles to see her boyfriend is a question that is currently unanswerable

The first race on Saturday had a sloppy designation
The different designations can be confusing
A dirt track that is in its best shape is called “fast.” It’s the preferable way that races are run
The next step down is “good,” which means the track isn’t fast
the track may get to good by the time the Derby begins
The next designation below good is “muddy,” which means that the track is wet but there is no standing water
The lowest designation is “sloppy,” which is given when there is standing water on the track
The best is “firm,” meaning exactly what it says
and then there is “good,” which means the grass is in top form and might even be slippery

From small producers to large cooperatives
a paradigm shift in farming practices is taking root in this conservative corner of northern Italy
verdant terrain and ingrained traditions would seem to make it the perfect hub for regenerative viticulture
biodynamic winegrowing has been slow to take hold in this mountainous region
and grassroots organizations—which include several co-ops—is working to change course for the region
These innovators are layering in a new identity for Alto Adige
one that reflects its environment and traditions—and may foretell a paradigm shift
“A big, green garden” is how biodynamic winegrower Patrick Uccelli of Ansitz Dornach
a mixed-crop biodynamic farm in the rugged
“We can grow more or less everything,” he says
“everything” has been narrowed to two things: apples and wine grapes
These monocultures are now integral to the region’s farming traditions
work an average of just over a hectare each
Most feed the dozen cooperatives that are responsible for approximately 70 percent of the region’s production
dotted across a range of valleys and clustered around the regional capital of Bolzano
account for roughly 30 percent of the Alto Adige’s other wines
they turn out some 40 million bottles a year
“there is more to the biodynamic wine scene than people outside the region realize,” Meissner says
and a lively working group of biodynamic farmers and winegrowers.” Moreover
he sees Alto Adige as “a very interesting place of tradition and transformation
and of what’s coming towards us from the future.”
Alto Adige’s physical and cultural landscape predisposes it to a key element of biodynamics: the integration of animals into winegrowing
“I talk with some older growers and they tell me how they used to walk their ox through the vineyards,” notes Jo Pfisterer
The interplay of livestock and other crops was part and parcel of Rudolf Steiner’s vision for holistic agriculture
The region’s high Alpine pastures and tradition of transhumance plug into this in a way few other regions can
the cornerstone of biodynamics is the concept of the farm as a closed system open to human guidance and cosmic influence
“This type of farming disappeared from this area 50 years ago,” says Uccelli
It was normal.” And as this approach comes back
Beyond this—as in other dry, sunny regions, such as Alsace or the Pfalz—lower rainfall, humidity, and disease pressure make biodynamic farming easier in Alto Adige. Romana Echensperger MW, author of a recent book that examines biodynamic viticulture in several European regions
cites an increasing awareness among growers that the region’s twin monocultures are not viable long-term
As climate change forces them to look for new ways to retain the signature Alpine freshness of the region’s hallmark Schiava
“biodynamic methods offer a possibility to temper these challenges,” she believes
Biodynamic practices—from intensive composting to work with teas and preparations tailored to the individual needs of a particular plot of land—build moisture-retaining soils
all of which are already critical needs in Alto Adige
where some of the highest growing-season temperatures in all of Italy are routinely recorded
Alto Adige is a sprawling playground of natural parks
These daunting land costs have curbed growers’ appetites for taking chances with new farming methods or investing in biodiversity in ways that could cut into productive vineyard area
who in many cases have inherited tiny parcels
may lack the time and manpower that biodynamic farming requires
There is also the bottleneck of an older generation that has been especially slow to hand over the reins
Lack of wider market awareness is another issue. Martin Gojer and his partner Marion Untersulzner grow and make the wildly popular biodynamic Pranzegg wines
“It’s true that in certain circles the visibility of the new [biodynamically farmed] style of South Tyrol wine is increasing,” says Gojer
the share of these wines is still vanishingly small.”
What will it take for biodynamics to take root more firmly in Alto Adige
an increase in both scientific research and in the number of positive role models all would help,” says Echensperger
But it may also just be a matter of a little more time and a lot more attention from the outside world to what’s already happening
In 1979, Ranier Loacker became the first in the region to embrace biodynamics on his seven-hectare estate in Bolzano
others noticed—notably a young Alois Lageder
who had recently taken over his family’s estate and was remaking and expanding the winery
Lageder wanted to build on what he knew from his upbringing about working in accord with natural forces
fearing the unknowns of biodynamics at a time when consultants
and convincing examples of biodynamic wines were scarce
But two decades later, a shift had begun. Cantina Kaltern
a large co-op on the shores of Lake Kaltern
was nurturing a small group of biodynamic grower-members who were beginning to witness first-hand how these farming practices yielded superior crops
explains that the co-op’s cellarmaster at the time supported these biodynamic members with regular exchanges of ideas and practices
the Cantina even bottled and sold a biodynamic wine
though “the time wasn’t yet right and it struggled to find a market,” he adds
Alois Lageder was ready to adopt biodynamics across his 55 hectares in and around the village of Magré
was convincing everyone involved in their extensive operations (the estate turns out 1.2 million bottles a year)of the benefits of biodynamics
the Lageders brought Meissner on board and together developed a process
continually refined in response to real-world practice
that gives grower-partners several years to adopt biodynamics under the mentorship of a dedicated team
Helena Lageder says her family has seen a steady increase in interest among growers “who are already working organically or biodynamically or who want to convert and don’t want to entrust their grapes to a partner who mixes them with conventional grapes.”
nearly a third of the Lageder’s 80 grower-partners farm biodynamically
a feat Echensperger acknowledges as “amazing—but also involving a lot of effort and business risk.” That effort and risk are undertaken by the grower-partners
having a steady market for grapes even in a bad year for disease or pest pressures gives them the support to work as they wish
The Bolzano-based Working Group for Bio-Dynamic Management connects and nourishes both established and up-and-coming biodynamic growers
building a more robust framework for biodynamics to flourish
The group counts 200 farmers—not just winegrowers—most in Alto Adige
“We get 20 to 30 new farmers coming to us every year,” explains Andreas Dichristin, who sits on the group’s board and is himself a small-scale biodynamic grower at Tröpfltalhof
but the development is definitely positive.” Currently
the group includes 36 growers in Alto Adige alone
accounting for about half of the region’s vineyard hectares under biodynamic cultivation
to supporters like Micheal Count Goëss-Enzenberg
He sees this ground-up cooperation as vital: “We make some of our preparations with the working group
That’s very important for the development of biodynamics in Alto Adige.” He also points to three co-ops that are part of this development
Cantina Kaltern’s Rohregger, for instance, says the co-op continues to nurture its tiny band of biodynamic grower members both through grape price premiums and regular meetings. And the grapes grown by these grower-members (and their organic counterparts) are again being bottled separately under the Solos label
Rainer’s son and head of the estate since 1998
explains that his draw to biodynamics is its conduciveness to transmitting terroir
“By keeping soil vitality at a constant high level
the vines are enabled to interact with their terroir and transmit it directly to their fruits,” he says
“So the wines made from biodynamically grown grapes tell the true story of their origin.” For a wine region that has struggled to gain a more individualized identity
“The impulses contained in biodynamic practice allowed us to organize our farm in such a way as to establish a solid relationship between what we cultivate and the development of our spirit,” says Ansitz Dornach’s Uccelli
Uccelli sits at the nexus of Alto Adige’s worlds
and continuing a family tradition of selling half his grapes to the Lageders
He may well represent the new paradigm for biodynamics in Alto Adige—and beyond

The exhibition ‘Light Leaf and Fire Form’ is a first encounter between Ferose’s iron sculptures and Stephane Zwahlen’s colour studies and ‘word works’
The Visual Arts Section at the Goetheanum has brought the two polar approaches together in a way that makes tangible what lives in the in-between in the works of both artists
The heat softens it and suddenly it reveals all the colours of the spectrum
“Both artists have in common that they are listening
the echo of deep layers of consciousness,” says Christiane Haid
The exhibition ‘Light Leaf and Fire Form’ is curated by Barbara Schnetzler
graphics and sculpture at Freie Kunststudienstätte Ottersberg
She was fascinated with iron from an early age
First encounters with sheet metal in a car workshop led her to autogenous welding which she learned from the iron sculptor Freddy Madörin in Basel
Today she creates freestanding sculptures and large relief-like wall art
From thin iron wire she creates works that are sometimes fragile and delicate and sometimes massive and powerful
these strong iron structures can enter into a dialogue with Stephane Zwahlen’s transparent and vibrantly colourful paintings
photography and typography at Kunstgewerbeschule [arts and crafts college] Basel in Switzerland and used to be assistant stage designer at Theater Basel
He also studied painting with Beppe Assenza in Dornach
Stephane Zwahlen is interested in what he calls “the silence of the afterimage”
As he listens to the resonance of the visible phenomena
he creates sequences that make different layers of reality of nature and of the human being visible
He complements some of his colour creations with word works

the First Goetheanum was destroyed in an arson attack
Events in and around the Goetheanum will be devoted to the commemoration of this loss
The building was intended as a response to the social crises of World War I and the needs of that time: a spiritual impulse for cultural renewal
That the First Goetheanum touches people to this day has to do with its profound connection with the human being
head of the Visual Arts Section at the Goetheanum
explains this effect also with the theme of metamorphosis in the First Goetheanum
“The forms reflect the principle of human evolution.” Because every stage can be derived
the step to the next stage has to be actively created
“This inspires creativity – and may encourage us to take on social tasks.”
In order to facilitate an experience of the spiritual reality described in Anthroposophy
new artistic forms of expression and new techniques were developed for the construction of the First Goetheanum
They include carving techniques for wood and glass
The building concept and most of the creative methods were based on Rudolf Steiner‘s indications
sketches and models and executed in collaboration with many local experts and artists from around the world
Christiane Haid explains that “The idea of a gesamtkunstwerk has been realized here in a unique way
in the harmony of all art forms down to the newly created art of eurythmy.”

Karin Michael and Adam Blanning have taken on the leadership of the Medical Section at the Goetheanum
paediatrics and nursing they cover a broad range in medicine
They advocate active healthcare and the promotion of qualifications in all medical professions
“With the growing virtualization of our life worlds the healthy development of children and young people faces great challenges today,” says Karin Michael who specializes in child and adolescent medicine
she describes the reply of an 11-year-old patient who said
“But this is the real world for me” in response to the statement that the real world should play a much more prominent part in everyday life
perceives that “many people feel so consumed by the offerings and demands of the outside world that they start to lose some trust in their own capacities for rhythm
change and healing.” Burnout and social isolation can be the consequences
Together with the oncologist Marion Debus they form the new leadership team of the Medical Section at the Goetheanum
The team is planning to extent the professional Care Areas created by their predecessors Matthias Girke and Georg Soldner and make them more international
The Care Areas focus on age-specific healthcare tasks and make interdisciplinary therapies in Anthroposophic Medicine available to the public via the platform anthropmedics.org
dealing with fever and infectious diseases
They are to be extended to include all of childhood and youth as well as questions regarding a dignified life at an advanced age
The team is also committed to healthcare aspects such as nutrition
the relationship with nature and spirituality
The three leaders also intend to promote the specialized groups in Anthroposophic Medicine
because specialized physicians with the additional qualification in Anthroposophic Medicine are in demand
for example in the context of severe chronic disease and in dialogue with academic medicine
a hundred years after the Medical Section‘s foundation
new ways will be sought towards the spiritual deepening of all medical professions
All three Section leaders are practising physicians

With her book ‘A Life With Colour’ Caroline Chanter presents the first comprehen-sive biography of the painter Gerard Wagner (1906–1999)
Wagner understood the colours as an alphabet and looked for objective principles in the encounter with the being of colour
“Gerard Wagner‘s paintings are colour symphonies in themselves whilst motifs as such recede into the background,” is how Caroline Chanter describes the painter‘s work from the 1990s onwards
This is not about losing oneself in colour
One can observe this particularly well in the metamorphosis series
retaining coherence whilst possessing independence at the same time
In 1924 Gerard Wagner spent time in the art colony of St Ives
studying with the landscape painter John Anthony Park
He learned from Park that colour expression is more important than form
the young artist studied at the Royal College of Art in London (UK)
It was Hookway Cowles who introduced him to Anthroposophy
In 1926 Wagner and Cowles travelled to the Goetheanum in Dornach
The impressions Gerard Wagner absorbed there turned what was intended to be a short visit into a lifelong stay
He deeply studied Anthroposophy and the artistic impulses it has inspired in eurythmy
Through colour experiments he explored objective principles of the essence of colour
Gerard Wagner encompassed this in the words
was expressed in the “direction” of the artistic activity

The exhibition at the Goetheanum features 20 paintings by Margarita Voloshina (1882–1973)
The works from the second half of her life come from the Goetheanum collection
the Rudolf Steiner Archives and two private collections
Built at the time of various reform movements
the Goetheanum became a place that sought to inspire fundamental life impulses
starting from individual development to a new approach to spheres of practice such as farming
the building was an artistic and social project that was completed mostly by women during the final war years
“It is a building that makes the whole essence of Anthroposophy visible in artistic form,” says Christiane Haid about the First Goetheanum‘s special intention
She is head of both the Visual Art and the Humanities Section at the Goetheanum and initiator of the video series ‘The First Goetheanum as a Synthesis of the Arts’
For this series Christiane Haid invited a number of experts to talk about their research into this cultural impulse from the point of view of architecture
It emerges that the building was not only conceived as a gesamtkunstwerk but it was to inspire formative principles and forms of living “that have remained culturally
politically and economically important to this day,” Christiane Haid adds
which Rudolf Steiner continued to develop artistically
is visible in the architectural forms and colour designs of the First Goetheanum
and it is the key to understanding life in a way that has been used fruitfully In Goethean science and medicine to this day
Christiane Haid is convinced that “Goetheanism holds much potential for other areas

The Visual Art Section at the Goetheanum calls on professional visual artists to submit art work on the topic of Corona
With this appeal the Section would like to highlight two things
that even during a pandemic art is important
Artistic activity makes familiar with creative processes
the art impulse also lives as a stimulus for tasks in agriculture
An Art Intensive Week reveals approaches in architecture
The Visual Arts Section at the Goetheanum has developed an Art Study Year and an Art Intensive Week to show how this works
The painter and writer Margarita Voloshina
received public acclaim when she was young for the portraits she painted of prominent Russians
But she soon began to question the naturalist style of her teacher Ilya Repin
“Does it make sense repeating what is there anyway
An entirely new art is needed that reveals a previously unseen world.”
Her questions and inner search led to a meeting with Rudolf Steiner and subse-quently to her repeatedly spending longer periods of time at the Goetheanum in Dornach
she helped with the building of the First Goetheanum
both by carving capitals and painting the ceiling of the small cupola
Her studies of anthroposophy also led Margarita Voloshina to explore the nature of colour
she described her perceptions: “Transforming the experience of feeling into colour
into the movement of colour that becomes rhythm and ultimately form.“ The idea
as a whole,” adding that “the composition must not be firmly fixed
Margarita Voloshina developed a new style of painting
The Goetheanum Art Gallery will show twenty of her watercolours on the Life of Christ until 24 April 2022
The exhibition will be complemented by landscape moods painted by her husband Maximilian Voloshin

BERLIN (AP) - Voters in Switzerland decided Sunday to make it easier for young "third-generation foreigners" to get Swiss citizenship
agreeing to extend to about 25,000 people under age 25 access to the fast-track process now available to foreign spouses of Swiss nationals
A "naturalization of third-generation immigrants" measure passed in a national referendum with 60.4 percent of the vote
The measure gives young people whose parents and grandparents have lived in Switzerland for years a simplified path to citizenship
Being born in Switzerland doesn't automatically confer citizenship in Switzerland and some other European countries
While about 25,000 people are estimated to be eligible for the new process
the referendum's passage ultimately could be far-reaching in a country where non-citizens make up one-fourth of the population
Voters on Sunday also rejected a complex tax reform initiative aimed at getting Switzerland in line with international standards
SRF reported that 59.1 percent of voters rejected the tax reform referendum
which would have scrapped a two-track tax system that offers lower rates to foreign firms to lure investment
Experts say the tax initiative's failure means that overall rates are likely to be set higher - which would be a disincentive to companies that bring in jobs and ultimately tax revenues
Critics including regional government leaders and much of the political left had said the initiative would deplete tax coffers for an uncertain payoff
Proponents had countered that the reforms were needed to keep competitive a country that has few exportable natural resources and relies heavily on globalized industries such as finance and pharmaceuticals
The "third-generation foreigners" initiative will mean less paperwork
fewer delays and lower fees for anyone under 25 whose parents and grandparents have lived in Switzerland for years
but who did not go through the time-consuming
Its immediate beneficiaries are mostly people from elsewhere in Europe or Turkey whose families have been in the Alpine nation for decades
not migrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East whose recent arrival in Europe has sparked a backlash from the political far-right
which is not in the 28-nation European Union but is all but surrounded by bloc members
has been taking in foreigners for centuries
To become a citizen generally requires 12 years of residency
mastery of at least one of Switzerland's four national languages
and honoring the "fundamental values" of the Swiss Constitution
such as equal rights for women and men and freedom of conscience
Sunday's referendum was the latest installment of Switzerland's direct democracy that gives voters a frequent say on political decisions
A third issue on the national ballot involving infrastructure spending passed with 61.9 percent of the votes
also decided against a bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics
the region rejected a similar referendum about the 2022 Winter Games

On this day in 1968 ………
The long-time treasurer of the European Bluegrass Music Association (EBMA)
She grew up in an environment where classical music was important
music was (and still is) an important element
At the age of 10 Torrie began to take violin lessons and soon joined the school orchestra
Although she admits that she didn’t always enjoy the practicing (who does?)
she is very grateful that she was encouraged to learn to play the violin
Torrie has been a bluegrass music lover since the late 1980s
and has been actively involved since 1991; as a fiddle player in two Basel-based bands
firstly with Down Yonder and then in the Bluegrass Hoppers
Later, in 1993, Torrie became involved in the administration and promotion of bluegrass music when she joined some like-minded individuals in setting up the Swiss Bluegrass Music Association
From October 1999 through to September 2004 she was the chair of the board of this organisation
Torrie became involved in the European Bluegrass Network (EBN) from its very beginnings in Basel in 1995
She was tasked to act as the representative for the Swiss bluegrass community and to type the first two editions of the European Bluegrass Directory
She is a co-founder of the European Bluegrass Music Association (EBMA) and has been its treasurer as well as the membership administrator
which is when chairmanship started to be rotating annually among all EBMA board members
Torrie started to play bass with a new local band
and is looking forward to bringing this band out into Europe eventually
She is an alum of the IBMA’s Leadership Bluegrass class of 2011
So much for the bald facts; what caused Angelika Torrie to become a fan of the music
to be an active performer and then move on to administrative and promotional roles within the bluegrass music community
What is it about bluegrass music that attracted you to it
Initially I felt most attracted by instrumental virtuosity played in a free way (without sheet music)
but I heard the singing rather as part of the instruments than the words
I have to really concentrate if I want to catch the lyrics of a song (other people seem to be the other way round…)
I’ve always been most impressed with instrumental virtuosity
this might be something that may be found in other musical styles
but there’s another element that attracted and kept me in the bluegrass music; the easy access to artists and to people who like this music
I haven’t found another cultural activity where people across borders and oceans connect so easily than within the bluegrass scene
I like to watch the development bluegrass music goes through when it’s played by bands of various European countries
In some cases it seems to pick up the musical heritage of the particular country – sometimes more
You play the fiddle (violin); is that something that you did before learning about bluegrass music
Tell me about your interest in the instrument
I think I was a pretty good player at 18; I even played solo parts in the school orchestra
I took my instrument with me when I spent one year in Scotland after school (baccalaureate)
I discovered the Scottish folk dance and music
And ironically it was in a pub called The Fiddlers Arms where I played in a jam session for the first time and picked up Devil’s Dream
It was only a few years after my return to Switzerland that I discovered I actually qualified to play in a bluegrass band (until then I had only heard bluegrass music once on a bad live recording!)
I was asked to join a band of a banjo playing friend of mine as their fiddle player in 1991
You have been pro-active in getting bluegrass aficionados organised to support and promote bluegrass music; what has been your motivation in this regard
It just happened without me looking for it
In 1993 there was a call for action by the owner at that time of the Swiss Bluegrass mail-order shop Acoustics
for the Swiss bluegrass scene to form a loose group for monthly meetings
the Swiss Bluegrass Music Association was formed
A strong force behind this formation was Paolo Dettwiler
probably the first second-generation bluegrasser in Switzerland
banjo pioneer Ruedi Dettwiler in Switzerland
With a talent for accounting (working as a secretary in an accountants company was enough qualification)
Always working closely with Paolo led to my election as chairperson after Paolo’s resignation in 1999
I was asked to help organize tours for American bluegrass bands
which evolved into another activity as a self-employed booking agent
Paolo – as many will know and remember – was also a driving force in forming the European Bluegrass Network
which became the European Bluegrass Music Association on 4th February 2001
As it worked so well in the Swiss association
I was elected as treasurer with Paolo being the chairperson
In 2004 I stepped back from the SBMA board only a few weeks before my second child was born
What progress do you think the Swiss Bluegrass Music Association and the European Bluegrass Music Association have made since their formation
Both organisations have been able to concentrate the fan base and to offer useful services to musicians and other people active in connection with bluegrass music
And they’ve both become umbrellas for activists and consumers of the music and
they have actually raised the image of bluegrass music to the “outside” world and have been instrumental in keeping bluegrass fans and professionals informed on a regular basis through print and electronic media and in supporting bluegrass events
The main focus at the beginning was to connect people
a goal that has been thoroughly achieved by both organisations
Meanwhile the scene is alive and kicking and in particular the Swiss association is an example for other countries’ national organisations
Now both SBMA and EBMA can focus on priorities such as supporting projects to bring youth to bluegrass music
doing research and acknowledging the pioneers in Switzerland/Europe (thus building a base to preserve the history)
what have been the most significant events in the improved promotion of bluegrass music in Europe
The initiation of the European World of Bluegrass month and the EWOB Festival in the Netherlands by the European Bluegrass Network in the 1990s and under the umbrella of EBMA from 2001 through 2010 (since 2011 the festival is run independently from EBMA) has probably developed to be the most significant event in Europe
More and more concerts happening in the month of May as the worldwide month of bluegrass have created a rising awareness of what the music is and the international attention and recognition
The creation of awards from the 2nd EWOB Festival onwards was another achievement
which brought publicity to bands and to the festival itself
Although a split off from the organizing group in the Netherlands in 2001 caused irritation
this movement too has led into a recognized event with the Bluegrass Festival in La Roche-sur-Foron in France organised on a highly professional level with lots of publicity over four days
with a highly qualified on-site jury of 10 or more people from across Europe
You took on the role of Chairperson of the EBMA in 2009
how has the organization developed since then and in what ways do you hope it will develop in the future
The priorities of EBMA are to intensify the networking across borders to enable exchange of know-how in the various fields
to further youth in bluegrass music in Europe
and to continue providing information on an international level
I think it’s important in some cases to create an awareness for bluegrass music being a genre in its own rights
which doesn’t necessarily reflect a certain lifestyle – bluegrass music is a link from person to person
as our organisation depends on and exists through voluntary work
we have to be realistic in what can be achieved
Many organisations like ours feel the lack of manpower these days and a lot of work is done by only a handful of people – for free
it also has to be a priority to find new people enthusiastic enough to join us in our endeavours
I personally have learned a lot simply by doing it
And meeting and working with people who share the love for our music – my board colleagues
– has been enriching my life for the past 20 years and I don’t want to miss one minute of it
we decided to reorganise a bit and put chairmanship onto a rotating system
and after the 5th edition of the European Bluegrass Summit in March next year
it will be another member of the board and so on
This way the workload is more evenly distributed and not focusing on one representative only
Richard Hawkins reminded me that you took over the role of Editor of the German Bluegrass print magazine Bluegrass Bühne in December 2009; how did that come about
three publications were printed in one magazine
All three editors (Rienk Janssen of Strictly Country
Eberhard Finke of Bluegrass Buehne and Paolo Dettwiler of Bluegrass Europe) had decided to retire after the Feb/Mar 2011 issue
Then Eberhard felt he couldn’t face another year and announced his retirement by end of 2009 in March of that year
Being close to the magazine through EBMA and Bluegrass Europe (and German being my mother tongue) I felt that the gap from December 2009 – February 2011 wanted to be filled
With five years editing experience from the Swiss SBMA newsletter I approached Eberhard in May how he’d feel about my taking over this responsibility
and by the time Bluegrass Europe became independent and Strictly Country ceased
a German Bluegrass Music Association had been formed (in 2010) and took over responsibility for the German magazine
Thus I was free to take over editorship of Bluegrass Europe in February 2011 from Paolo Dettwiler
Since you took over the editorship of Bluegrass Europe
what are your plans for the magazine in the immediate future
It had been a topic at the European Bluegrass Summit in 2010
But eventually everybody agreed that our association (EBMA) needed a tangible asset to offer to members
Thus the magazine was revamped and extended to a 40 page magazine which is still gaining recognition worldwide
numerous articles by great writers from both Europe and the US
we think it reflects a part of bluegrass music that is not covered by existing bluegrass publications and we’ve gained many subscribers even in the US
how do you see the publishing of European bluegrass magazines developing
A bluegrass magazine based within a bluegrass association fulfills a purpose by informing the membership of local
national and international bluegrass-relevant developments
So as long as there is a committed editor (or even better an editorial team)
there is no doubt a European magazine in printed form from the EBMA will be appreciated for many years to come
EBMA’s mission statement is “Working together to support Bluegrass Music across borders.”
This piece is an adaptation and update of a profile written for Bluegrass Europe magazine, # 75, published August/September 2010.
