the designated successor to the International Space Station
is coming to the Innovation Park in Dübendorf ZH
The private US company is one of the big players in space travel
The US space station development company Starlab Space wants to set up in the innovation park next to the airfield in Dübendorf ZH
A letter of intent to this effect was signed on Monday
large areas for the necessary infrastructure and strong research partners such as the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich convinced Starlab Space that the Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich (IPZ) was the right partner
Starlab Space is a corporate collaboration between Airbus
The company is also closely associated with Elon Musk's SpaceX
With the planned end of the International Space Station (ISS) in 2030
Starlab will continue the research and science of the ISS as a private space station and open up low-Earth orbit for private companies
With the signed letter of intent between Starlab Space
the Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich Foundation and the newly founded Center for Space and Aviation Switzerland and Liechtenstein
Starlab Space plans to commence business activities in the Zurich Innovation Park
Starlab could establish various facilities in the IPZ
such as a Center of Excellence for payload development and operation
as well as other Starlab ground segments focusing on biotechnology
This would make the greater Zurich region a European location for the global Starlab network with industrial and research partners
The Dübendorf Innovation Park is a center where universities
research institutions and national and international companies work together to drive innovation - with a focus on the fields of aerospace
has decided to establish its European site at the Innovation Park near Zurich
a memorandum of understanding was signed between Starlab and the newly founded Center for Space & Aviation Switzerland and Liechtenstein (CSA)
and the Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich foundation (IPZ)
The science park Starlab plans to set up will be one of only three operated by the company worldwide
The UZH Space Hub has shown that we not only conduct successful research but can also transfer research into practice
UZH’s previous experience with space projects was one of the key factors in Starlab’s move to Dübendorf
“The UZH Space Hub has shown that we not only conduct successful research but can also transfer research into practice.” He believes Starlab’s decision is based on three robust pillars
In addition to the UZH Space Hub’s space expertise and having strong research
innovation and practice partners at the CSA
the Innovation Park site with its direct access to the airfield was another factor that moved the needle in favor of Dübendorf
space travel will be an integral part of the global economy
UZH is laying the first milestone in this direction
Starlab aims to fill the gap left by the decommissioning of the International Space Station (ISS)
Starlab’s space station will not only enable international research to continue but will also open up low Earth orbit for commercial activities
explained at a media conference at the UZH Space Hub in Dübendorf
the creation of products that can be produced better under microgravity conditions than on Earth
this can only be achieved using elaborate auxiliary structures
Ullrich and his team have successfully grown such organoids under microgravity conditions
but also UZH’s broad network have made it possible for Starlab to settle here
space travel will be an integral part of the global economy,” explained President Michael Schaepman
who spoke at the media conference not only as President but also as a space expert
“The public and private collaboration that is happening here will be a driver for the next 10 years.” UZH Vice President Elisabeth Stark also emphasized that it wasn’t only UZH’s socially relevant basic research that impressed Starlab but also the university’s broad network
UZH was involved in the development of the collaboration right from the beginning
the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts
the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein
the Swiss Air Force Aeromedical Center and the Office of Communications of the Principality of Liechtenstein are currently involved
The center is open to further strong partners from research and innovation in the space sector
“This cooperation with our partners demonstrates that we are so strong in the region that we can compete with any other European location,” says Ullrich
In addition to research flights into weightlessness
flights in connection with earth and atmospheric observation
green aviation and missions on human performance in aviation
the UZH Space Hub and the new center are also planning to hold further training courses to equip specialists in the fields of space and aviation for the new space economy
These are precisely the kind of specialists Starlab needs
“We want to attract people to the region who do high-tech here,” says Jaumann
Dübendorf is to become a so-called ground segment of the space station for Starlab
“Commercial space stations must be integrated into value chains on the ground in order to be commercially successful,” explains Ullrich
As Starlab’s European science park on the ground
Dübendorf will be the center of excellence when it comes to developing and operating payloads – including the experiments that will go on board Starlab
Starlab’s plans in Dübendorf include a Payload Control & Operations Center
Starlab will only operate two other science parks worldwide: the existing George Washington Carver Science Park at Ohio State University and an Asian site at iPark in Tokyo
“Higher education institutions are one reason why Switzerland and Zurich are among the most innovative regions in the world,” said Silvia Steiner
Head of the Department of Education of the canton of Zurich
it is therefore only logical that Starlab has chosen the Innovation Park
whose research institutions already include UZH
ETH Zurich and the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA)
Space research is much more than rocket research
“We need to make this clear to the public.” It also aims to monitor climate change or biodiversity
“We don’t do research in an ivory tower
but focus on concrete applications down here on Earth.”
UZH is strengthening interdisciplinary research and innovation in the field of aerospace medicine
The University Council approved the establishment of the Institute of Aerospace Medicine as of 1 January 2025 and appointed Prof
the institute will drive studies ranging from understanding reaction and adaptation to altered gravity and medical problems of air and space flight
to pioneering production of human tissue in microgravity
with transformative implications for precision and transplantation medicine
In close collaboration with the Aeromedical Institute of the Swiss Air Force (FAI) and the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA)
the institute will meet national aviation needs
support clinical research and train the next generation of specialists in aviation medicine
By integrating basic and clinically relevant research
being anchored in the Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich and utilizing an international network
the institute sets UZH in a strong position in a rapidly developing academic field

The 87-home Westhof scheme, a three-sided linear building in the Zürich suburbs, is sensitive to both its setting and the needs of its residents
Approaching the new Westhof apartment building in Hochbord, a short tram ride from the centre of Zürich, its dog-like head turns towards the path as if nodding a welcome. It’s a characteristically friendly gesture in an 87-home scheme whose design is sensitive both to the needs of residents and its setting in a district where large-scale industrial and agricultural buildings are rapidly giving way to high-density housing.
They are young and energetic and speak with optimism about how an intelligent and humane approach to housing design can make the city a better place. Their building shows a level of care and ambition that is all too rarely seen in the UK.
The continuous linear building is wrapped around a courtyard and comprises three parts: a four-storey ‘head’; a large nine-storey main block; and a three-storey wing that adjusts to the site’s irregular geometry and protects the courtyard from the noise of passing trains. The long courtyard is open at the southern end where a delicate galvanised steel staircase completes a circular rooftop route across a series of terraces.
On the roof of the lower wing, gardens are set under a galvanised steel pergola reminiscent of commercial greenhouses. Bird boxes are integrated into the ventilation towers that punctuate the structure. The route is enriched by sculptures by Swiss artists Andres Lutz and Anders Guggisberg, who carefully documented the found conditions of the existing site in a film that forms part of an installation in one of several communal rooms within the building.
At ground level there are seven commercial spaces and workshops strategically located around the courtyard, close to entrances and on corners. The three-storey wing contains a series of large apartments designed for sharers, with four or five self-contained bedrooms around a generous shared living room and kitchen.
The tallest part of the building steps back from the courtyard at the fourth floor to complete the terrace that forms part of the rooftop landscape. From this terrace it is possible to call down to children or friends playing or passing the time in the courtyard, ensuring that the large building remains connected to life at the centre of the scheme.
The spaces feel slightly unfinished, anticipating the marks and traces of domestic life and social activity. Other public parts of the building were also left incomplete with a portion of the budget held in reserve to fund a series of resident-led projects to finish it. These include a productive garden, play facilities and adaptations of the communal rooms which occupy strategic positions in relation to the courtyard, roof terraces and circulation.
Alex Gore is co-founder of Pricegore whose recent work includes the renovation of a building for arts organisation Primary and the reworking of a modernist house in Chelsea.

A woman deposited her waste in front of the entrance in Dübendorf ZH because the collection point was closed for an unscheduled period
The town wanted to fine her for this - and failed in court
She apparently did this to the chagrin of the employees at the waste disposal site: they searched the bag the next day and tracked down the alleged litterer
the woman received a letter from the municipality: an invoice for 300 francs "for your illegal waste disposal"
The accused defended herself before the district council - with success
The municipality of Dübendorf is allowed to demand a contribution towards costs if someone disposes of their waste in non-fee-paying garbage bags
the unscheduled closure of the collection point could not be blamed on the woman either
even though the city had pointed this out several times
The authorities did not accept the district council's reasoning and took the case to the administrative court
anyone could simply deposit their waste in front of the entrance when the collection point was exceptionally closed
the Administrative Court also declared the controversial fee to be illegal

As part of a planned innovation park at the old Dübendorf airfield near Zurich
Dario Wohler Architekten have transformed the local fire station into work spaces for start-up companies
The city and canton of Zurich have big plans for the former military airfield east of the Swiss metropolis: along with Zurich’s two universities and other project partners
they want to establish companies and research institutes in the sectors of robotics
Part of the grounds will continue to function as an aerodrome devoted to research
The air force and an air-traffic control centre will remain
One of the first components of the transformation has taken place in the former fire station from 1939
the architects have preserved the duality of the stone exterior walls and wooden roof truss
although the roof itself has been completely replaced
This provided the impetus not only for extensive renovation of the roof
but also to exploit the entire height of the interior
Glulam timber trusses with a conical cross-section now span the main space
the new roof has been covered with corrugated aluminum sheeting and mounted with photovoltaic modules
the wooden facing shell is visible; the architects have used this to clad the existing walls
a concreted sanitary and technical core bears a mezzanine accessed by a prominently positioned spiral staircase of hot-dipped galvanized steel
On each level above and below the mezzanine
the architects have created a glazed conference room
they have also integrated an open kitchenette into the end wall of the technical core
This small kitchen faces the main room.

Van der Poel only had company on the first half of the first lap
Dutchman leads from start to finish as Pidcock takes silver and Aerts bronze
successfully defending the rainbow jersey and claiming the third cyclo-cross world title of his career.
was the overwhelming favourite but the way he stamped his authority on proceedings made it seem he was in a different race to the rest of the field.
and by the end of the first lap he was alone with a lead of 15 seconds
That only grew and grew as he ticked off the remaining six laps of the muddy Swiss circuit
and he raised his arms almost a minute-and-a-half before anyone else had crossed the line.
Tom Pidcock (Great Britain) claimed the silver medal with the best performance of his debut campaign in the elites, riding away from a chase group that once comprised five Belgians. Toon Aerts emerged as the best of them to take the bronze medal, while Wout Van Aert had to settle for fourth after a late puncture.
"I think I rode a perfect race," Van der Poel said. "I Felt really strong and when I managed to get away on the first lap, that gave me wings."
Van der Poel dominated the cyclo-cross season after coming off a short mountain bike season, winning all but one of his races. Nevertheless, the tough racing circumstances near Zürich created some hope among his rivals.
Overnight rain turned the green pastures at the military air base into a mud bath. If the countless short run-ups and fly-overs on the Swiss course weren’t enough to make for a demanding race, the 39 riders at the start were treated with stormy weather when they lined up at 2:30pm. As well as Aerts, the front row featured Belgians Eli Iserbyt, Michael Vanthourenhout, Quinten Hermans, and Laurens Sweeck, along with two other Dutchmen in Lars van der Haar and Corné van Kessel.
Van der Poel managed the hole shot and led Aerts, Iserbyt, Tim Merlier (Belgium), Vanthourenhout and Hermans into the first muddy stretches. Wout van Aert (Belgium) featured just outside the top-10, together with British protagonist Pidcock.
It rained when the race got underway but the 25 year-old Dutch ace didn’t mind. He took the best start and only Aerts was briefly able to keep up. Half a lap later, Aerts already paid the price for trying to keep up and Van der Poel was gone for good. His lead grew up to nearly two minutes and he only then his shifted back during the final lap.
"It was harder when it stopped raining, actually, because then the mud dried up a little bit; it got even harder to ride through. It would’ve been better if it just kept on raining," Van der Poel said.
After nearly 69 minutes of racing, the best rider of the season had more than enough time to celebrate his third cyclo-cross world title. A mud-clad Van der Poel stopped at the finish line, stepped off his bike and put his vehicle in front of him, showing a big smile and making a gracious salute.
"I expected it to break up early because the course was really tough. It was one of the hardest races I’ve ever done. Especially in those last laps, the bridges were nearly too hard to get up," Van der Poel said.
"It was a very honest race. The strongest riders were in front immediately and that’s a good thing at a world championship."
Pidcock successfully held off some big names during the second half of the race. Toon Aerts and Wout van Aert came close but had to bow to the 20-year-old British rider.
"I’m second-best in the world of cyclo-cross today. I would say I’m second-best in the world but sometimes I’m not," Pidcock laughed.
"It’s unreal. Mathieu is one of the best riders in the world. I was second to him today. That’s incredible. I stepped up to the elite’s this season. I could’ve made it an easy time for myself by racing in the U23s but I’ve come to ride with the elites and I got onto the podium. It’s really pleasing," Pidcock told Sporza.
After a good start from the second row, Pidcock ended up riding in the chase group with five Belgian riders during the third lap of the race.
"That’s why I wanted to attack - I didn't think it would be a good place for me to ride against five Belgians overworking me," PIdcock explained.
"It’s strange because I was ill all week. On Tuesday I woke up poorly so I barely rode all week. Maybe that did me good. Maybe I should get ill more often."
At a handful seconds from Pidcock, Aerts profited from a late puncture for triple world champion Wout van Aert to take the final podium spot, repeating his third place from last year in Bogense, Denmark. Van Aert was disappointed about the result, even though he wasn’t expected to perform to the best of his abilities due to the long recovery from his crash at last year's Tour de France.

Golden Age of Aviation-themed party at the Dubendorf Airfield outside Zurich
last Thursday to celebrate the official first flight of its replica Junkers F13 – famed for being the first all-metal commercial airplane
Flying was there to witness the landmark public flight
which was actually the third trip aloft for the F13 re-creation after two earlier test flights
Amelia Rose Earhart offered commentary over loud speakers as test pilot Oliver Bachmann and Rimowa President and CEO Dieter Morszek took off in the open-cockpit airplane from Dubendorf’s grass runway
circled the airport twice and returned for a picture-perfect landing against the backdrop of the setting sun
about 200 invited guests toasted the public unveiling before heading to Dubendorf’s famed Hangar 9
where Hugo Junkers built the first F13 in 1919
for a party featuring a lavish re-creation of the history of manned flight by dozens of actors hired by Rimowa for the occasion
which flew with a BMW inline six-cylinder engine
the replica is powered by a 450 hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp Junior nine-cylinder radial
which is why Morszek says he decided seven years ago to build the replica
The Rimowa team laser-scanned parts from an original F13 in the air museum at Le Bourget Airport outside Paris to build the re-creation
which is a near exact copy but includes some modern touches
The company expected to receive Swiss certification for its creation soon
after which it hopes to build another replica F13
which will be used as the basis for FAA certification
buyers who are interested in purchasing F13s of their own
The airplanes are expected to be priced at around $2.5 million apiece
“This is why I followed and supported the construction of an airworthy Junkers F13,” he said
“I wanted to give back the world an important cultural asset – not in a museum

Dübendorf may not be the most exciting looking course to host cyclocross world championships, but U.S. racer Kerry Werner is doing is best to liven the venue up.
During practice Friday, the Kona rider hopped his way up one the many super-sized fly-overs, which provide most of the elevation changes at the Swiss airfield.
With little terrain to provide natural ups and downs, the race organizers have installed a number of fly-overs around the course in Dübendorf. Some are smooth and rideable, some have stairs on the up-side, and most are quite large.
Werner decided to show that stairs don’t mean un-rideable, bunny hopping his way all the way up a very long set of long, shallow steps.
The longest tallest stair hop to date. Maybe throw it down last lap on Sunday when I am way off the front ??| thanks for being silly with my @billygoatbuilt | #konabikes #rideshimano #shimanogrx #maxxisbike
A post shared by Kerry Werner (@kerryw24) on Jan 30
While it is an impressive display of bike handling skills from Werner
it might not be the fastest way to the top
you can see two Team Canada riders dismounting and trotting up the stairs toward Werner
The American joking shouts “I beat the Canadians!” who then join in with a tail-whip onto the downside of the fly-over
Wout and all the other favorites taking the stairs one step at a time

Fabian Berni has decided to sign with their partner team in the MySports League
He used to play for them during his junior time
Berni made 178 games in the Swiss League
The 22-year-old also used to be part of numerous Swiss junior national teams up until the U20
business interest in autonomous vehicles has skyrocketed
as has the demand for drones that are extremely fast
and their batteries can only power them for about half an hour
This means they aren’t suited for use in search and rescue missions or bridge inspections
Davide Scaramuzza and his team have therefore made it their mission to develop drones that are
“But there are still a few challenges that we need to overcome,” says the robotics specialist
whose research is supported by the European Research Council
“We need to increase the efficiency of perception algorithms used in fast-flying drones.” The onboard sensors of his drones capture 30 images per second
and they have to able to process all the data recorded by the sensors almost instantaneously to produce a 3D map of their surroundings
This enables them to identify and avoid obstacles
the systems need real-time algorithms that respond to both aerodynamic disturbances and unpredictable obstacles
The hangar in Dübendorf is an excellent opportunity for the researchers to test their drones in a safe environment
While drone flights are currently still restricted to the indoors
the researchers are planning to take their research outside in the near future and see how the drones fare when they’re exposed to the elements – with the aim of improving them until they’re market-ready
All of this testing is made possible thanks to LINA
which stands for Shared Large-scale INfrastructure for the Development and Safe Testing of Autonomous Systems
“LINA will provide the infrastructure in the canton of Zurich to safely test autonomous system
from basic research through to businesses developing marketable systems,” says Brigitte Rohner
She is leading the project together with Michel Guillaume
the head of the Centre for Aviation at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW)
The brand-new infrastructure provides researchers at UZH
ZHAW and the Zurich University of the Arts with a safe and efficient way of testing autonomous systems
including drones and other self-driving vehicles
LINA was made possible thanks to the Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH)
which aims to promote cooperation among Zurich higher education institutions in the area of digitalization
funded the project together with the other participating universities
The plan is to set up various test areas to investigate and develop prototypes
One of these will be an indoor arena featuring a large-scale high-precision position tracking system as well as a wind tunnel facility
also includes plans for an outdoor test area with safety nets and a digitally controlled
safe airspace within the Dübendorf control zone (CTR)
researchers could test drones under Light Unmanned Aircraft Operator Certificate (LUC) conditions in the lower airspace above Dübendorf
“It’s also where the air miles required to certify a vehicle could be accumulated,” adds Brigitte Rohner
The long-term goal is to establish a certification body for all drones that are used for commercial purposes
The first-ever LINA event will take place in Hangar 9 on Dübendorf Airport from 11:00am to 4:00pm on 30 March
