The owners of the Wildlands zoo said the animals must have been killed by an outside predator, such as a fox or marten. No other animals had escaped from their enclosures, spokeswoman Hanneke Wijshake told broadcaster RTV Drenthe. “The penguins had bite marks, but we’re not sure from which animal. A marten or fox may have done this or perhaps a feral cat or polecat,” zoo worker Henk Kuiper said. The zoo is still investigating where the animals might have entered the penguin enclosure, which has now been cordoned off with electric wire to protect the remaining penguins. A wildlife camera has been installed to detect the culprit. Such attacks are rare, Kuiper said. In 2003, 11 penguins at Burgers Zoo in Arnhem were bitten to death by a fox. The duo shined during the Global Champions League in Monte Carlo and secured a spot on the 1.50m podium in Valkenswaard. Additionally, they claimed victory in the CSI4* 1.45m event in Vejer de la Frontera in 2022. From now on, the gelding will represent the Norwegian flag. The BWP stallion is a descendant of Falco x Quidam de Revel, from the breeding of Leo Vermeiren. In the summer of 2023, Kim Emmen took a seat in the saddle of the 12-year-old stallion and soon after brought him to the start at five-star level for the first time. In the GCL of Riyadh, the pair even registered a clear round at 1m55 height. Their first podium place followed a month later, in the CSI4* of Maastricht, where they finished third. The pair failed to record a victory together. The Rostal-born Macho took his first steps on the international stage under the saddle of Thibaut Huyvaert, who presented him at CSI2* level in Knokke in the summer of 2021. His passage did not go unnoticed and he moved to the stables of Leonie Peeters. She took the reins at the end of 2021, until the beginning of 2023. After that, Pieter Clemens took a month in the saddle, until Kim Emmen came into the picture.
