Splash will be bringing readers reports from Geneva Dry the world’s premier commodities shipping conference which took place on April 28 and 29 with more than 820 delegates in attendance Up first in our coverage is the Commodities Shipping Outlook a high-level scene-setter to open proceedings designed to give delegates an indication of what to expect in the coming 24 months fuels and new technology this session covered a huge amount of ground in a short amount of time co-moderated by Splash editorial director Sam Chambers and Nick Brown the corporate affairs director for marine and offshore at Bureau Veritas with a heavyweight speaker lineup featuring John Xylas Quizzed as to how often he was having to change his global economic projections but it’s probably more likely by the tweet or by the Truth Social post.” Rahim commented: “I think the keyword now is uncertainty… We’re now in unprecedented uncertainty for a little bit.” Rahim said China has diversified away from an over reliance on the US since the first Trump trade war eight years ago.  I think China is in a much better position hence the reason that they’re not coming to the bargaining table anytime soon,” Rahim argued.  who also heads up Greek owner Ariston Navigation said today’s trading conditions were indeed unprecedentedly uncertain worse in many ways than the nadir shipping experienced in the mid-1980s.  “You don’t have that certainty today because you don’t know what is the lifespan of your assets stressing that this was especially pertinent regarding newbuilds who noted that typical supramax rates today hover around the $10,000 a day mark and yet need to return twice that over the next 25 years to pay for a newbuild.  combined with mediocre rates and uncertainty over future fuels both shipowners on stage urged delegates to stick to the secondhand market to buy time until a more certain picture returned who had just flown in that day from Fednav’s Montreal HQ worried about prospects for global trade this year telling delegates: “When you factor in the Trump tariffs and all the other effects of this administration’s policies you start just increasing the cost of everything and increasing the cost of things is generally bad for trade.” The Canadian said that the current US administration was “pouring fuel” on an already inflationary environment which he said was likely detrimental to world trade for non-Chinese owners the Chinese tonnage penalties recently introduced by the US Trade Representative look to have a minimal effect of the dry bulk fleet Splash will be bringing coverage of Geneva Dry’s special session on electric vehicles and how they have been supercharging certain dry bulk trades.  Delegate passes for next year’s Geneva Dry scheduled for April 28 and 29 are on sale now.  They should be bright yellow so they are visible in the ocea.. FC Basel took a giant leap towards securing their first Swiss Super League title since 2017 with a resounding 5-1 victory over Servette at St showcased Basel's electrifying form and the brilliance of their star players a performance that highlighted his exceptional playmaking abilities stemming from a defensive error by Servette's Kasim Adams added a brace in the 34th and 38th minutes capitalizing on sublime assists from Shaqiri and Otele respectively This stunning display of attacking prowess put Basel firmly in control before halftime Servette's offensive efforts were largely stifled further hampered by Alexis Antunes' red card early in the second half While Kasim Adams managed a consolation goal for Servette Bénie Traoré and Nicolas Vouilloz added late goals Shaqiri's contribution now stands at an impressive 17 goals and 21 assists for the season This win extends Basel's lead at the top of the table to nine points with only four games remaining Their next match against FC Lugano is crucial; a victory would practically secure the championship While Servette and other contenders still have a mathematical chance Basel's current form makes them overwhelming favorites The game highlighted not only individual brilliance but also the team's collective strength and unwavering determination Coach Fabio Celestini praised his team's mentality and the fantastic atmosphere created by the passionate fans The match showcased Basel's remarkable turnaround after narrowly avoiding relegation last season a testament to their hard work and strategic improvements FC Basel are poised to end their championship drought The upcoming match against Lugano promises to be a high-stakes encounter one that could seal Basel's triumphant return to the pinnacle of Swiss football Xherdan Shaqiri played a significant role scoring one goal and providing three assists FC Basel now holds a nine-point lead in the Swiss Super League standings with only four games remaining in the season He scored one goal and contributed three assists playing a crucial role in Basel's dominant victory There are four games remaining in the Swiss Super League season FC Basel's commanding lead significantly 5:1 While the crowd was impressive when the two teams entered St the team followed the fans' example and built on the strong performances of recent weeks It comes as no surprise that Xherdan Shaqiri once again played a key role It was the league's top scorer who broke the spell and put FCB ahead in the 28th minute But that was not all: Shaqiri set up three more goals and now has 15 goals and 20 assists who had been waiting for a goal since the beginning of November ended his drought with a brace in the 34th and 38th minutes the home team made sure of a clear result in the duel between the Super League's current best teams Geneva rarely made an offensive appearance in Basel And when Alexis Antunes received his second yellow card at the start of the second half and was sent off the visitors appeared to be decisively weakened whose mistake had led to Basel's opening goal coach Thomas Häberli's team did not manage any more Basel are now nine points clear of their closest rivals at the top of the table The first league title since 2017 is therefore out of reach for the red-and-blues actually it should be Xherdan Shaqiri with 1 goal and 3 assists Comments: 48th yellow card Pulice (Provided by Kane County Sheriff's Office) A former Geneva resident was charged with 23 felonies related to video recording a minor while the minor was in the shower, according to police and court records. Ryan T. Pulice, 41, of the 2600 block of West Washington Boulevard, Chicago, was charged April 15 with 10 counts each of producing and possessing a moving depiction of sexually explicit visual content of someone under age 18; making an unauthorized video recording of a minor without consent; making an unauthorized video in a residence; and making a recording of a person’s intimate parts, according to the charging documents. The charges allege that Pulice engaged in recording the minor from July 17, 2014, to Jan. 4, 2025, and saving the 10 recordings in his iCloud account, court records show. According to court documents, Pulice was at a home in the 500 block of South Street, Geneva on Jan. 4, where the minor child known to him was taking a shower with the bathroom door closed. The minor noticed a shadow under the door. The minor went to look and found a cell phone under the door angled up to record activity inside the bathroom, documents show. The minor documented the presence of the cell phone, dressed and fled to a parent who was at work, documents show. The minor and parent confronted Pulice on the phone, who denied recording the minor and said he was taking video of dogs playing outside the bathroom door, documents show. When Pulice was told they would report the incident to police, he left the house, according to court records. The most serious charges Pulice faces are the 10 of producing a moving depiction of sexually explicit visual content of someone under age 18, each a Class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison if convicted. Pulice’s attorney did not return a message seeking comment. — One man faces charges and police are searching for a second suspect after a shooting in Geneva left a victim with serious injuries Officers responded to Geneva General Hospital shortly after midnight Tuesday morning after a male arrived with an upper-body gunshot wound who underwent emergency surgery and was in guarded condition had been shot inside a home on Exchange Street Authorities executed a search warrant at a home on Exchange Street around 9:30 p.m charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon Anyone with information on the shooting or the whereabouts of the second suspect is asked to contact the Geneva Police Department at (315) 828-6771 The memo is the latest in the U.N.'s efforts to cut costs and find efficiencies as it faces financial headwinds The United Nations is asking its agencies in Geneva and New York to further look for cost reductions and efficiencies including by moving staffers to cheaper locations Secretariats in the two cities — which rank among the most expensive worldwide — to “identify as many functions as possible” that could be relocated or “otherwise reduced or abolished if they are duplicative or no longer viable.” It adds that agencies should review positions financed by both assessed contributions — or member states’ dues — and voluntary contributions A social enterprise, we connect and inform over 1.3 million development, health, humanitarian, and sustainability professionals through news, business intelligence, and funding & career opportunities so you can do more good for more people. Lake Geneva officials have continued a Sunday morning parking program in which parking placards are provided to downtown churches that they can distribute to non-resident members and visitors so they can have free parking while attending services A church parking program will be continued in the city of Lake Geneva Members of the Lake Geneva City Council unanimously approved to continue a Sunday morning parking program for downtown churches Licensing and Regulation Committee members unanimously approved to continue the program city officials provide parking placards to downtown churches which they may distribute to non-resident members or visitors so they can have free parking while attending church services during Lake Geneva's paid parking season The churches that are apart of the program include First Congregational United Church of Christ Lake Geneva United Methodist Church and First Church of Christ Scientist City officials have been debating during the past several months about whether to continue program which has been offered since December 2021 Lake Geneva aldermen and church representatives met March 13 to discuss changes to the parking program The program previously allowed non-resident church members and visitors to have two hours of free parking The program now allows for three hours of free parking Some church representatives had requested that free parking be allowed until 12:30 p.m Other changes to the program include not issuing placards to vehicles with a city of Lake Geneva parking sticker; revoking a placard from someone who is found using a duplicated placard; requiring church officials to return their placards before Dec 15 of their expiration year; requiring church officials to maintain a record of the members who are receiving a placard; and limiting parking to within a one-block radius of a church Several church officials proposed that the placards be used during services and programs that are held on Shrove Tuesday some city officials felt adding those holidays could be confusing for parking operations staff because they often occur on different dates each year and churches conduct services and programs at different times and some churches do not host programs on those days As part of the revised Sunday morning parking program Holy Communion Episcopal Church will receive 45 placards; Lake Geneva United Methodist Church will receive 20 placards; First Congregational United Church of Christ will receive 15 placards; and First Church of Christ Scientist will receive 10 placards Alderwoman Sherri Ames said she is pleased that parking program will be continued and I think everybody didn't get everything they wanted but I think it was a good move and it shows good will to the churches," Ames said Alderwoman Catherine Stoodley said she appreciates that city officials and church representatives were able to work together to come up with a revised program "Thank you so very much for your patience and getting this to where it needs to be," Stoodley said senior warden for Holy Communion Episcopal Church said even though church officials did not receive everything they requested he is pleased that the program will be continued but that's called compromise and we're good with that," Lemcke said We don't issue permits to anybody who lives in the city We treat it with the respect that it deserves."  Subscribe to our Daily Headlines newsletter Email notifications are only sent once a day Here is a list of the Walworth County’s weekly criminal complaints from April 22—April 28 The cases still need to make their way through the … Lake Geneva Ministries to celebrate youth camp's 75th anniversary with world record attempt  Members of the Lake Geneva City Council approve plans for Topsy Turvy Brewery expansion  Lake Geneva initially approves plans to stripe city parking lot  Get up-to-the-minute news sent straight to your device Account processing issue - the email address may already exist Invalid password or account does not exist Submitting this form below will send a message to your email with a link to change your password An email message containing instructions on how to reset your password has been sent to the email address listed on your account You don't have permission to access the page you requested What is this page? The website you are visiting is protected. For security reasons this page cannot be displayed A Geneva man has been charged with child pornography crimes accused of taking videos of a teen girl with whom he was acquainted He faces 20 counts of possession or exhibition of child pornography two counts of unauthorized video recording/transmission and one count of videotaping a person’s intimate body parts noticed in July 2024 that someone had stuck a camera underneath a bathroom door and was recording her as she got dressed after a shower she again saw a phone recording her underneath a door The charges allege that he also did so at a residence in Chicago via a transom window on a bathroom doorway and that victims included two friends of the girl Police say they found 74 such videos in his iCloud account His next court date is May 7 before Kane County Judge Bianca Camargo Owners of historic buildings in Geneva will now be able to apply for grants to pay for upgrades The Geneva City Council Monday voted 8-0 with two absent to approve the Historic Preservation or Adaptive Reuse Grant Program starting with $40,000 budgeted for fiscal 2026 If it sounds familiar – like the American Rescue Plan Act – it is “Aspiring to be a continuation of the ARPA grant program this grant will be focused on elevating the built environment through exterior preservation and renovation projects fire prevention measures and interior improvements needed to support today’s more intensive end users,” Dawkins said The city’s program is designed to provide funding to support creating new purposes for older structures, while transmitting an understanding of the past to future generations, Dawkins said. “Projects will improve the economic vitality of the city by cultivating vibrant business corridors and enhancing the memorable character of Geneva,” Dawkins said. Eligible projects includes tax-exempt or governmental properties to be considered on a case-by-case basis, Dawkins said. While the ARPA program required money to be designated and used within certain timeframes, Economic Development Director Cathleen Tymoszenko said this is not included in Geneva’s program. “We kind of did not want to have that type of deadline because projects are happening all the time, buildings are going on the market and interest comes forward,” Tymoszenko said. “And if we had that kind of deadline, it could impede the process. So we would prefer not to have that, so we could work with [a] different variety of timelines that people have for projects that differ greatly.” Dawkins said the program would be evaluated every year along with the budget, so officials can decide then whether it is successful. “In this...upcoming fiscal year budget, we put in basically seed money, because we weren’t sure what types of projects or what the amounts would be,” Dawkins said. Third Ward Alderperson Becky Hruby and 5th Ward Alderperson Robert Swanson were absent for the vote. BATAVIA –Solid starting pitching and the long ball is a proven formula for baseball success. Batavia demonstrated that again Friday while downing Geneva 6-1 in DuKane Conference play at Batavia. Justin Enger tossed a complete game 6-hitter while Luke Stevenson and Liam Darre went deep for the Bulldogs (7-14, 4-6). Enger worked out of trouble early, allowing two baserunners in each of the first two innings but escaping unscathed. In the third, the Vikings loaded the bases with no outs on a double by Nelson Wendell, a bunt single by Miles Dibble and a walk to Noah Hallahan. Nick Price’s sacrifice fly brought in a run but Enger got the final two outs with no further damage. Meanwhile, Vikings starter Mason Bruesch came out on fire, retiring the first six hitters with 4 strikeouts. Nolan Zimberoff beat out an infield hit to open the third but was erased when Bruesch fielded Stevenson’s soft liner and doubled off Zimberoff. But the Bulldogs tied the game on 2 walks and Darre’s RBI single. Bruesch got two quick outs in the fourth. But Brennon Zeng was hit with a pitch and Zimberoff singled again. Stevenson turned on an inside pitch and drove it inside the left-field foul pole. Enger settled down after the third, permitting just three baserunners the rest of the way. Bruesch’s day was finished after he walked Brandon Oke leading off the fifth. Darre greeted the new pitcher with a blast over the “Battlin’ Bulldogs” sign in right field. Enger said the long balls energized the whole team. “They’re huge,” he said. “You’re going hype in the dugout. Those are always big, not only for the game, but for everybody to get hyped in the dugout.” Enger struck out three and trusted his fielders to make the plays. And they came through, playing errorless ball for the first time this year. Wendell and Dibble finished with two hits apiece for Geneva (17-6, 7-3). The teams play again Saturday morning at 10. The homer was Darre’s third of the week, after he delivered two in one inning on Tuesday. “I didn’t think any balls were going out today,” said Batavia coach Alex Beckmann. “When [Darre] puts the barrel to it, good things happen.” “[Enger] kept the pitch count down, got a couple of first-pitch outs,” said Beckmann. “It was a good day for him to throw with a contact pitcher with the wind blowing in. He hit spots, he kept them off-balance and did a great job.” Utah (KUTV) — People living in Orem should prepare for a major traffic overhaul of Geneva Road south of University Parkway road is the subject of one of the Utah Department of Transportation's (UDOT) latest ambitious projects and bike lanes of both sides - not to mention a 10-foot-wide multi-use path on one side "It's loud," said Desiree Raulston but it's loud and there's a ton of traffic." Stand on the sidewalk by Geneva Road for a few moments and you'll see just how busy the small road really is Raulston has seen the firsthand the backups and congestion right outside her door "Getting in and out of our driveway is rough," she said people 'bright us' at night - they don't realize there's a house here because the turn lane ends right before my driveway." "We are going to widen the road a little bit through there so there will be an extra lane in both directions and we're going to continue the path that Orem City has on the east side of the road - and then on the west side we'll also add another bike path," said Wyatt Woolley senior communications manager for UDOT Region Three The roughly $34 million project was requested by the state legislature and the city - wanting to connect things through the area and make room as the area grows there's a (Latter-Day Saint) temple in Orem right there," Woolley said "Orem has this project in Provo with connecting Lakeview Parkway in the area The airport's over there - but not too hot - summer embrace lies Lake Geneva which Chicagoans and golfers from points farther afield have visited for decades It's less than two hours from the Windy City to Lake Geneva and just over an hour from Milwaukee Anchored by two proud resorts and complemented by three other accessible independent golf courses Lake Geneva provides a nice mix of variety and familiarity for groups who want to return year after year Lake Geneva's pillars are Grand Geneva Resort and Destination Geneva National Both properties have invested millions in improving the experience both on and off the course in recent years and both are intent on keeping that positive momentum rolling in order to help them fly up the discerning traveling golfer's wishlist Ever since the sensation around TV series Mad Men helped thrust it back into the wider culture in the late Oughts midcentury modern style has remained popular in seemingly every part of life Courses inspired by the best pre-World War II layouts have dominated social media feeds and enjoyed particular commercial success in the last decade-plus 60s and early 70s do share a curvilinear coolness with Eames chairs and Noguchi tables They are worthy of study and preservation as artifacts of a distinct era in the history of golf's main art form Originally opened in 1968, The Brute at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is a stirring example of midcentury modern golf Laid out by prolific postwar architect Robert Bruce Harris it strikes a strong pose on exciting parkland terrain just west of Lake Geneva's northwestern tip Harris often pursued what he perceived as an "ideal" golf course routing striving to have as few instances of consecutive holes sharing the same par as possible within a given nine-hole stretch Only twice does a golfer encounter back-to-back par 4s: at 9 and 10 par 4s alternate with par 5s and par 3s to constantly keep golfers hitting different clubs deeper level of mental engagement than many contemporaneous courses offer tilted greens and 68 vast oval-shaped bunkers mark The Brute in time while also playing subtle mind games with the golfer Playing the course is a constant confrontation with surprising scale specifically relative to the enormity of the bunkers They function to dwarf what are actually generous fairways and outright huge greens often turning what should be routine approaches into slightly uncomfortable battles not just with the golf course but with the self While some modest tree management would help open up some views across the property The Brute balances challenge and playability nicely The overall resort also opened in '68 and was known as The Playboy Club until the 80s when it changed hands before being acquired by its current ownership It has made several key improvements in recent years including a full overhaul of its guestrooms in 2023 The common spaces of the main hotel are squarely midcentury-modern themselves inspired by the iconic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright sits two hours north and west of Grand Geneva is one of the finest steakhouses I have visited Grand Geneva will soon bring a bit of new golf to future visitors as it joins the growing list of resorts building short courses a 10-hole short loop with holes averaging just under 100 yards will be laid out by Milwaukee-based architect Matt Dusenberry and is expected to open for play in 2026 That course will occupy the site of Grand Geneva's former driving range which will now be located on the site of the resort's former airstrip and will open fully in June In the meantime, in addition to The Brute, golfers will continue to enjoy The Highlands a 1970 Pete Dye/Jack Nicklaus collaboration that was redesigned in the 1990s by Bob Cupp Whereas The Brute invites aggressive play and big swings wandering over some more abrupt terrain and into some narrower corridors Its intimate routing rewards precision in a way that compliments The Brute's grander feel tend to inspire lively 19th-Hole - or perhaps 55th-Hole - debate among the groups that visit I actually favor the up-and-down-and-all-around Player course by a hair over Palmer though Palmer's par-3 16th and par-5 17th holes which run along the north shore of Lake Como (Geneva's neighbor to the north) offer the type of scenery that elevates a golf experience from good to great Geneva National has invested heavily in improvements over the last few years longtime Arnold Palmer Design associate Brandon Johnson came west to advise on key changes to a handful of holes on Geneva National's Palmer course which used to be overly penal and leave golfers with a rough first impression Wisconsin-based architect Craig Haltom has made some similar playability updates to the Trevino course including more than doubling the size of the 14th fairway which was often criticized by golfers as excessively penal Haltom also designed a rollicking-fun putting course which sits perfectly between the clubhouse and the driving range A Mexican-themed bar is close at hand for golfers who putt better on tequila All three spots have an enchanting view of Lake Como which is part of the reason why Geneva National garnered the top spot in Golfers' Choice 2025's list of facilities with the best off-course amenities nationwide Geneva National has a distinct buddy-trip vibe thanks in large part to its large and growing clutch of accommodations anchored by a group of wonderful multi-bedroom cottages the resort also acquired a hotel across Lake Como called The Ridge rebranding it Lodge Geneva National and renovating all of its interior spaces and rooms This adds yet another lodging option for guests Geneva National is home to a superb steakhouse Even if you don't play your best golf on property On the other side of the lake lie 27 more holes of accessible golf. Originally laid out by Ken Killian & Dick Nugent, Abbey Springs opened in 1971 and was renovated in 2021 by Bob Lohmann and Todd Quitno It is mostly a members' club but does allow public tee times as well "The course truly has no bad holes now and some of the best rolling most challenging greens you can play," according to one glowing GolfPass review from 2022 I have Country Club Estates squarely on my radar for my next Lake Geneva visit Fast fashion comes at an astonishing environmental and social cost While the impacts of the fashion industry in terms of pollution the need for a shift to sustainable fashion is evident Organizations in Geneva and beyond are joining efforts to shift the fashion economy and foster international cooperation on the issue While the fashion sector is booming, increasing attention has been brought to the impressive range of negative environmental impacts that the industry is responsible for. The fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for 2-8 % of global carbon emissions What’s more, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year (UNECE, 2018) and washing some types of clothes sends significant amount of microplastics into the ocean The Environmental Footprint of Fast Fashion More facts and sources on Business Insider Use of chemicals in clothes production also raise serious health concerns both for the workers in the industry and consumers Additional impacts on health also arise from the pollution described previously The environmental and social cost of the fashion industry forces us to rethink fast fashion and stresses the need for more sustainable business models and practices Resources hereunder provide additional information on the environmental impacts of fashion These plastic-based textiles have a significant impact on the environment and climate throughout their life cycle due to emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants. The textile sector is a growing contributor to the climate crisis, with about 1% of crude oil production used to produce synthetic fibres (European Environment Agency) The fashion sector is also an important source of plastic leakage into the environment. The textile value chain is responsible for 9% of annual microfibre pollution to oceans (UNEP, 2021) As fashion value chains are globalized and the industry has a significant impact on the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) international cooperation is important to foster sustainable fashion Impact of the fashion industry on the SDGs (UNECE Launched at the fourth UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4) the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion is seeking to halt the environmentally and socially destructive practices of fashion The Alliance is improving collaboration among UN agencies by analyzing their efforts in making fashion sustainable identifying solutions and gaps in their actions and presenting these findings to governments to trigger policy supports innovative solutions in fashion through sustainable forests-based materials Several other international organizations are working on global efforts to foster more sustainable fashion Additional information on these initiatives can be found in the links below Launched at COP24 in 2021, the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Change serves as a roadmap to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 within the textile International Day of Zero Waste 2025 emphasizes the need for action in the fashion and textile sector to reduce waste and advance circular solutions Towards zero waste in fashion and textiles The fashion and textile sector’s linear business model is fueling overproduction and overconsumption contributing to the global waste pollution crisis Textile production and consumption volumes are rapidly rising and increasing the impact of the sector outpacing the progress made towards the sustainability of its products and practices consumers lose about US$460 billion of value each year by throwing away clothes that could continue to be worn and some garments are estimated to be discarded after just seven to 10 uses Eleven per cent of plastic waste comes from clothing and textiles making it third in line after packaging and consumer goods Only 8 per cent of textile fibres in 2023 were made from recycled sources with less than 1 per cent of the total fibre market coming from textile-to-textile recycling A lack of fibre recycling practices is estimated to equate to an annual material value loss of more than US$100 billion The fashion and textiles sector relies heavily on synthetic fibers produced from fossil fuels Discarded clothing often ends up in the Global South where inadequate waste management leads to dumping and severe environmental and social consequences facing pollution and declining quality of life To celebrate the 2025 edition of International Day of Zero Waste, leading voices from Geneva and beyond who are joined the panel of this event highlighted steps taken to move forward the zero-waste agenda and key initiatives to reduce the waste impact from the fashion and textile sector Geneva is a major global hub for the governance of hazardous substances and home to numerous international intergovernmental non-governmental and business organizations aiming at reaching the zero-waste goal including in the fashion and textile sector Cotton production can have consequent impacts on the planet due to the use of pesticides and the conversion of habitat to agricultural use Conventional production practices can result in soil erosion and degradation supporting sustainable models of cotton production is essential if we are to achieve the SDGs Learn more about environmental sustainability in the cotton sector through the resources below Many actors in Geneva are involved in promoting sustainable production and consumption patterns in the cotton industry (see section below for details). This year’s official celebration takes place on 7 October in Cotonou, Benin with the participation of Geneva actors such as the World Trade Organization This marks the first time WCD will be celebrated on the African Continent Many actors in Geneva are involved in promoting sustainable production and consumption patterns in the cotton industry (see section below for details) This year’s official celebration that took place on 4 October in Vienna had the participation of Geneva actors such as the World Trade Organization The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world aims to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future Through a Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Project, “Reducing uses and releases of chemicals of concern, including POPs, in the textiles sector” the Basel Convention is aiming to stir significant and documented reductions in use and exposure to chemicals of concern (CoCs) including POPs in the textiles sector in selected countries guided tours across Geneva to rediscover sustainable solutions ILO promotes decent work in the textiles leather and footwear sector through social dialogue Through its Fibres, Textiles and Clothing team the International Trade Centre (ITC) encourages small businesses to grow through sustainable practices ITC drives competitiveness while ensuring social and environmental responsibility ITC therefore supports companies in ensuring their social and environmental performance EFI is a flagship programme of the International Trade Centre which connects marginalized artisans from the developing world – the majority of them women – to international fashion houses for mutual benefit EFI also hosts the Secretariat of the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion encourages companies across the sector to announce their commitments to transparency and traceability UNECE also convenes the Forests4Fashion initiative launched in 2014 to promote sustainable forest management beyond the forestry sector and encourage sustainable production and consumption in support of Sustainable Development Goal 12 UN Trade and Development engages with circular economy and sustainable trade in the textile industry through research work and support to developing countries The WBCSD supports business initiatives for circular economy and sustainable consumption and production, including in the fashion industry. The CTI Fashion Initiative brings together industry players to establish harmonized standards metrics and best practices for circularity we seek to unlock new avenues for value creation and operationalize circularity throughout the fashion and textile value chain Indigenous Peoples have a wealth of traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) that can take different forms including These TCEs are deeply connected to their history TCEs held by Indigenous Peoples often inspire others who always seek creative input and fresh ideas using elements of Indigenous Peoples’ TCEs without consent and in inappropriate ways can cause offense and harm to Indigenous Peoples WIPO aims to create opportunities for a dialogue between Indigenous Peoples and fashion companies to shape fair and equitable interaction between them around the multilateral negotiations to address distorting subsidies and trade barriers for cotton; and 2) development assistance provided to cotton production and its value chain These two tracks reflect the clear linkages and possible synergies between cotton trade and development assistance in a number of developing and least-developed countries (LDCs) Members UN system’s engagement is larger than the Geneva-based organizations presented here. Members of the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion also include UNDP governments and businesses work on solutions to shift the fashion industry toward a more sustainable pathway consumers can also play a role with their daily actions This section provides resources on the actions individuals can take to support sustainability in their apparel choices Further resources and events to learn about environmental sustainability in the fashion industry are provided below You need to first accept the terms and conditions before download Subject to the Terms of usage of UNifeed, UNifeed materials are available free of charge for news purposes only. DATELINE: 02 MAY 2025 GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / 01 MAY 2025, GAZA CITY 1. Wide shot, exterior, Palais des Nations, Flag Alley Two months into a devastating aid blockade of Gaza, food has run out and people are fighting over water amid relentless bombing, the UN’s humanitarian affairs coordination office (OCHA) said today (2 May). Speaking from Gaza City OCHA spokesperson Olga Cherevko told journalists in Geneva that a friend of hers “saw people burning a few days ago from the explosions and there was no water to save them.” Since all entry points into the war-torn enclave were “sealed by the Israeli authorities for the entry of cargo” in March, the “worst-case scenario” was triggered, Cherevko said, supplies are depleting while the conflict rages on. “Food stocks have now mainly run out, water access has become impossible,” she told journalists in Geneva. As Cherevko spoke, she noted that a “very violent fight” for access to water was taking place downstairs from her, with people throwing rocks and firing shots at a water truck pulling away. The OCHA spokesperson said that every day she was seeing children “who have been deprived of their childhood for many months,” and elderly people “rummaging through piles of trash” in search of food and of things to burn for cooking in the absence of fuel. During a visit Thursday to Patient Friends Hospital, a paediatric hospital in Gaza City which had been attacked several times during the war, she heard reports of rising malnutrition rates, she said. “Hospitals report running out of blood units, as mass casualties continue to arrive,” Cherevko stressed, while precious fuel is being rationed. “Gaza is inching closer to running on empty,” she added. Cherevko said that UN humanitarians are “in constant contact” with the Israeli authorities and are advocating for border crossings to reopen. “We have mechanisms that mitigate diversion, ensure that aid reaches the people it’s intended to reach,” she said. Fletcher reaffirmed the urgent need for the release of hostages taken by Hamas on 7 October 2023, who “should never have been taken from their families” and stressed that “aid, and the civilian lives it saves, should never be a bargaining chip”. Cherevko said that over the past one and a half months, 420,000 people have been “once again forced to flee, many of them with only the clothes on their backs, shot at along the way, arriving in overcrowded shelters, as tents and other facilities where people seek safety, are being bombed”. Hayden Sujack had her second multi-home run game of the week and drove in three runs to help the Saints (11-10, 2-3 DuKane) to a big win over the Vikings (6-12, 0-5). Caleigh Higgins also went yard in the contest and drove in two runs, while Addison Wolf added three hits in the contest. Saints pitcher Kyli Dunn allowed just one hit over five innings, which came from the Vikings’ Caroline Winsininski. Isabelle Reed allowed just one run and one hit while striking out six over 6⅓ innings to help the Rockets (10-9, 8-3 Fox Valley) take down the Chargers while surpassing their conference win total from last season. Antonina Garcia led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Mia Lindquist had three hits in the contest, while Mei Shirokawa recorded two hits, including a double. Ellie Peck had a two-run home run in the first inning and also had eight strikeouts in the circle to help the Knights (14-8, 1-4 Interstate 8) snap their three-game losing streak. Angelina Campise had the team’s only other RBI in the contest. Amira Mendoza had a three-run home run, while Grace Sartain recorded three hits that tied the game at 6-6, but the Tigers put up four runs in the sixth inning to beat the Bulldogs (4-12, 0-4 DuKane). Will Viebrock and Zane Pollack each had three hits and drove in two runs, while Bennek Braden finished with three RBIs to help the Rockets (11-9, 4-6 Fox Valley) to the conference victory. Chase Powrozek got the win on the mound, allowing three hits and two runs (zero earned) and striking out seven over six innings. Evan Ross allowed just two hits and two runs (zero earned) while striking out eight as the Knights (14-5, 5-2 Interstate 8) fell to the Spartans. Brady Alstott, Antonio Villanueva and Carter Grabowski each had two hits to lead the offense.
