Need To Know words: Tucked away in a small Wisconsin town home to approximately 2,000 people, one will find the New Glarus Brewing Company who purchased the original brewing site as a gift for her brewmaster husband New Glarus is one of the few large-scale brewing operations to actually remain truly local While other craft breweries have expanded distribution to other states in their regions New Glarus beers are only available in one state: Wisconsin From its start in a converted warehouse in the early ‘90s to a $55 million expansion renovation that’s currently underway here are 10 things you should know about the New Glarus Brewing Company Katherine May’s handprints are all over New Glarus Brewing Company “I got to put my (handprint) in some of the concrete for their projects.” May has overseen construction projects at the brewery — including one with her 5-year-old son’s handprint she helped design a $55 million addition to New Glarus Brewing which will include doubling the size of their brew hall and adding a smaller pilot brewery to feed a spirit distillery we produce around 240,000 barrels a year.” May said it’s going to get us closer to 350,000.” One focus of the project is to expand parking to allow more visitors.  “Something really silly was that we are completely out of parking up here We never expected to get thousands of visitors and our parking lot has 50 stalls,” May said.  the brewery will be able to re-open to visitors on weekends like they did before the COVID-19 pandemic They’re planning to welcome guests back on Saturdays at their original location on the north side of town Carey said the company originally planned to start renovations before the pandemic because we lost 40 percent of our business overnight We’re kind of at the same level we were pre-COVID.” they are finally breaking ground on the renovation — adding more brewing hope to leave the brewery in good condition for their employees “We want the employee-owners to be set up for success after we retire.” Carey said New Glarus Brewing is not planning to sell their beer “The profitability is really not there when you’re out of state and the people of Wisconsin are so supportive of us and this small footprint allows us to have great relationships with our distribution network.” said the brewery “means an awful lot to the village.”  “It’s a great attraction for the tourists coming to town,” Truttmann said And it’s “absolutely fantastic,” the business plans to expand and re-open on the weekends He said the company organizes their tours that encourage tourists to visit other businesses in the village they get a token to bring into any of the businesses in town to get a free beer,” he said.  president of Milwaukee’s Lakefront Brewery said New Glarus Brewing is bucking a trend by expanding “To me it’s a great sign that people still believe in the industry,” Klisch said “I haven’t heard of that many expansions going on in the industry.” Recently, Lakefront announced plans to buy Kenosha’s Public Brewing Company, according to OnMilwaukee. “That area is kind of underserved by breweries,” Klisch said Carey said New Glarus Brewing expects to finish their expansion efforts by the fall of 2026 “We always view Wisconsin and its people as our boss and we can’t wait to welcome them back Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System and Wisconsin Educational Communications Board Who hasn't yearned for a grand tour of Europe wandering around the continent and taking in the sights from places such as Scandinavia That's where Wisconsin can help It's possible to take a European grand tour without leaving the state Germany and Norway right out our back yard We might not be able to climb the Eiffel Tower but we don't have to fly for hours to soak in the Old World aura New Glarus calls itself America's Little Switzerland The tagline has roots that go back about 175 years according to the website of the New Glarus Chamber of Commerce The area was settled in 1845 by a band of 108 Swiss immigrants fleeing an economic crisis in the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland succeeding generations and a steady stream of Swiss immigrants have kept alive the community's Swiss-German language folk traditions and music," according to the Chamber's website The culture is reflected in chalet-style architecture Thousands of tourists flock to the town to soak in the atmosphere, including hundreds from Switzerland, the Chamber reports. Glarus has tragically been found dead which captivated many during its time perched atop a light standard at the SSM Health Clinic in New Glarus sparked traffic disruptions and prompted at least one dedicated visitor from Colorado to make the trip New Glarus Police Chief Jeff Sturdevant confirmed that the owl was found sometime Wednesday near Wis There is no suspicion of foul play in the owl’s demise noting that its body was intact and likely did not fall victim to predation the owl is in the custody of the state Department of Natural Resources “It was just something unique to this area,” he said understating the fact that New Glarus’ Snowy Owl had become something of a star His police department and the county will no longer have to contend with the extra traffic caused by bird watchers Authorities had to post “NO PARKING” signs along the highway due to the danger it posed pedestrians and travelers alike The rarity of seeing a snowy owl in these parts — along with the majesty and beauty of its looks — helped boost its popularity Sturdevant said one of the sightseers even told him recently he drove from Colorado to see it compared to only 18 and 34 in each of the past two years “We’ve taken down all the no parking signs,” said Sturdevant European eats and southern Wisconsin hospitality in America’s Little Switzerland Tree Meinch is a lifelong travel enthusiast Hundreds of euchre players from across the state and country will face off in New Glarus this spring for the third-annual World Euchre Championship The event is hosted by the World Euchre Federation, an entity formed by the New Glarus Cares Community Foundation to raise funds for local projects while promoting the trick-taking card game said the championship tournament supports the local economy with tourism The proceeds have helped support local parks This year’s championship will run from May 15 to 18 Johnson joined WPR’s “Wisconsin Today” to share how the event has grown in its first three years and what impact it has on the New Glarus community The following interview was edited for clarity and brevity Rob Ferrett: What is the origin story of the World Euchre Championship in New Glarus Shelly Johnson: One of our board members came up with the idea as a fundraiser for our organization when we formed back in 2022 We got feedback that unless the tournament was sanctioned by someone we couldn’t really call it the World Euchre Championship We did it to help fund projects for the New Glarus Cares Community Foundation and it’s really just grown from there It really started with what I’ll call a marketing schtick but people love it and have really embraced it RF: How many people end up participating in it now and we also grew the number of tables for the doubles tournament we’ll have a total of 624 players participating in the event RF: How far away do people come from to be part of the tournament We’ve got people signed up to participate from California and over 40 percent of the people attending the tournament this year are from outside the state of Wisconsin And over 50 percent of those that live in the state of Wisconsin are traveling more than 100 miles to come here and play in the tournament Are people pretty serious about the competitive part of this at the tournament But we really have players from all skill levels Some of them are much more new to the game and are just playing for fun They’re playing for prizes and recognition We have a great championship belt that the winners receive and that belt is really coveted by people that play in the tournament RF: What kind of projects has this tournament help fund in the community we were raising funds to save green space in the village adjacent to one of the local parks and so we raised funds to purchase that piece of land and donate it to the village to become an official extension of the park so it can never be developed.  we used the funds toward a project to build the first-ever Americans with Disabilities Act accessible park in the county at Candy Cane Park and we had to raise over $250,000 to help fund the project Some of that money came from the village of New Glarus some grants and then fundraising activities like the World Euchre Championship we were able to raise the balance of those funds This year’s project that we’ve undertaken is a dog park in our community We’re actively looking at different sites and we’ll be launching the committee to get that project going here shortly we’re also doing some research on pickleball courts in the village and the results of the survey are what we used to help us drive what project we took on next NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Farmers Market returns for another great season starting May 2 at 3:00 pm with new ending time at 6:00pm groundbreaking event will take place Oct 29 for a "hospitality addition" that will house additional brewing New Glarus Brewing did not provide more information about their plans at this time converted an abandoned warehouse in New Glarus into a brewery was released in 1997 and is a popular souvenir for out-of-state visitors as New Glarus beer is only sold in Wisconsin New Glarus had outgrown its original Riverside Brewery and added its Hilltop Brewery where visitors today can get a taste of Spotted Cow and other brews on an expansive beer garden patio overlooking the Wisconsin countryside New Glarus Brewing produces about 230,000 barrels of beer annually, ranking 12th in total sales volume among craft breweries nationwide, according to its website. New Glarus Brewing Co.'s campus will be completely reimagined with a four-story 65,000-square-foot addition to the brewery's Hilltop building new brewing and distilling facilities and more "I just want people to know that this is us cementing the legacy of employee owners to be able to continue for many future generations," said Deb Carey who owns New Glarus Brewing with her husband "I think it will be a great thing for us and a great thing for Wisconsin." The $55 million project has been in the works for two years New Glarus Brewing broke ground on the project on Oct 29 and will ramp up construction in the coming months Around Christmas the brewery’s Hilltop campus will close to the public and remain closed until construction on the new facilities is complete in fall 2026 at the corner of Highways 69 and W in New Glarus will reopen to visitors and serve as the tasting room for all of 2025 and most of 2026 The new project will include adding two stories underground connecting the Hilltop Brewery to the foot of the hill it sits on A new parking lot will be located at the base of the hill with nearly 200 spaces quadrupling the brewery's current parking capacity visitors can take an elevator to the first above-grade floor which will house a museum about New Glarus Brewing's history That floor also will have a tasting room and brewing and distilling equipment "It was important when we laid out the spaces that it felt like visitors were taking a journey and flowing through the space," said Katherine May the project's architect and daughter of New Glarus Brewing owners Dan and Deb Carey Right now it's so expansive you could walk a quarter mile between two sites," May said The new brewing area will include eight large copper kettles But May said it did not meant Spotted Cow would double in production or be sold outside the state "This isn't some large expansion where were doubling our employee count We're improving inefficiencies that happened as we grew quickly over a short period of time," May said "The new kettles will allow us to avoid ramping up the mill as often and avoids things like having to work weekends or third shifts so depending on how sales work over the next few years The new building's second and fourth floors would be closed to the public and will be used for offices Sugar River DistilleryThe new addition appears to set up New Glarus Brewing to release a distilled product for the first time The building will house distillery equipment for the reemergence of Sugar River Distillery which the Careys tried to launch in the past but were unable to due to state laws New Glarus Brewing had to report its ownership group Wisconsin law prohibited distributors from owning distilleries But a recent overhaul of the state's liquor and tobacco laws now allows distributors to have a minor stake in distilleries a New Glarus Brewing spirit is back in the works but now it has a home and we're moving forward with it being a part of this building." connecting bike trail and moreThe new project also will include an expansion of the existing beer garden into the space where the visitors parking lot is currently located The new development also will include a bike trail that connects to the Sugar River bike path Another benefit of the new facility is its sustainable aspects a larger facility for reclaiming treated production water NEW GLARUS — After successfully completing the fundraising and construction of a new inclusive playground in New Glarus last year the nonprofit organization New Glarus Cares has announced it is setting its sights on a new project: a community dog park New Glarus Cares is collaborating with the Village of New Glarus and members of the Green County Leaders group to evaluate potential locations Plans for the park will include secure fencing and other amenities designed to enhance the experience for both pets and owners “The community has made it clear that a dog park is a priority and we’re excited to take the first steps toward making it happen,” said Shelly Johnson “This will give local dogs a safe place to exercise and socialize while strengthening the bond between pet owners in our town.” the closest dog parks are in Monroe and south of Verona A local dog park would provide a much-needed option for New Glarus residents and also those from nearby communities such as Monticello and Belleville Funding for the project will come from multiple sources and proceeds from New Glarus Cares’ annual World Euchre Championship The organization is also launching a community raffle to support the effort with tickets available from volunteers and local businesses and $500 prizes drawn during the World Euchre Championship on May 18 “We’re confident that through a mix of grants we can make this a reality without placing a heavy financial burden on residents,” Johnson said New Glarus Cares is also forming a committee to begin  preliminary planning for future pickleball courts in the Village a larger project requiring additional resources and New Glarus, Wis., headquarters, according to several local news reports The company — which brews beers such as Spotted Cow that are only sold within Wisconsin and sought after by tourists (and Illinois residents in many cases) who visit the state — will add 65,000 sq citing documents submitted to the local government New Glarus Brewing noted that the popularity of its beers and brewery tours is the catalyst for the expansion: “We receive thousands of visitors but our current paved visitor parking holds 53 stalls This has created congestion on our site and has forced us to be closed on the weekends,” the company said An expansion for parking at the bottom of the hill where the facility is located is part of the plan as are sustainability initiatives such as grass roofs and a expansion at New Glarus Brewing Co Architect Katherine May designed the new building New Glarus Brewing Co “I’ve called it ‘Hobbit-like,’ you feel like you’re starting an adventure,” May said A new parking lot will quadruple the brewery's capacity for visitors The creators of Spotted Cow and other Wisconsin-only beers have embarked on a $55 million The question buzzing around as New Glarus Brewing Co broke ground Tuesday on a 65,000-square-foot new building expansion is one staff has been hearing for years: “We’re going to open up at least on Saturdays Visitors to Riverside can watch beer brewed with the repurposed German equipment from dairies and taverns New Glarus used to get its start Hilltop — New Glarus Brewing’s main campus where tours are now — will close to the public around Christmas The brewery has embarked on a $55 million expansion at 2400 Wisconsin 69 The addition includes room for expanded production with four copper kettles to double brewing capacity New Glarus brews about 230,000 barrels of beer each year beer drinkers may be familiar with brews like Moon Man Pale Ale Belgian Red and Two Women (a country lager) as well as what they’re calling an “Heirloom Brewery” for small beers equipped with an open-air wild-fermentation vessel called a Coolship often used in the production of sour beers a larger tasting room and a bigger gift shop The existing lot is set to become a beer garden while 183 parking spots quadruple existing capacity the Riverside brewery had 15 parking spots When thousands of people started coming through this tiny little Switzerland in southern Wisconsin for a taste of limited edition brews like Very Sour Blackberry “People would drive through the courtyard,” Carey said They would pop out onto the road in front of other people “I was down here parking myself on Saturday and Sunday ‘Who’s the crazy old lady out there?’ ‘That’s the owner.’” Carey told a gathering of local politicians employee-owners (they have stock options) and reporters that the expansion “This sets up … the employees to be able to run the brewery for another 50 years without having to worry about some ginormous project,” Carey said “The last time we had a groundbreaking was 2006,” added Dan Carey limiting the distribution of even its most popular beer to sales only within the state of Wisconsin Deb Carey told a Madison reporter that New Glarus “simply can’t keep up” with demand from Chicago “We have no interest in shipping beer out of state or growing too big,” she said at the time this new expansion has taken deliberate planning Designs have been in the works since before the COVID-19 pandemic the architect on the project and Dan and Deb Carey’s daughter said this will be the 13th building they’ve all worked on together “We know the patterns we’re working towards,” she said We’ve had a very strong footing to be able to take on a project of this grandeur.” May told the assembled group on Tuesday that the New Glarus team wanted a design that felt “historic like a village.” The building will step up the hill “When you enter through the facility at the bottom I’ve called it ‘Hobbit-like,’ you feel like you’re starting an adventure,” May said this beautiful building on the top of the hill May said the design incorporates “a lot of rich materials heavy timber.” Fifty geothermal wells beneath the parking lot will help heat the facility The new space will also allow for the opening of Sugar River Distillery and we’ll have a demonstration brewery that will make 250 gallons at a time,” Dan said “It’s equipment that I found in Germany; (it) actually came from an old barn New Glarus Brewing is working with Keller Inc said a new tax incremental finance district was created for the last brewery expansion in 2007 TIF districts allow municipalities to invest money in infrastructural needs for new developments (street work which is then repaid by the increased property taxes generated by the development “It was unanimous,” Truttman said of the board vote meaning those tax funds that were paying off the county’s investment will come back to the village and local schools because revenue limits at the state level mean budget cuts for local government The brewery “has been an important part of New Glarus since they started operations and this expansion will just add to it,” Truttman said the number of tourists that come to visit the brewery and then come into town to grab a beer and a sandwich and then go to the other shops … it’s really helped New Glarus Kristi Lopez owns Kristi’s Restaurant on Fifth Avenue in New Glarus She came out on Tuesday morning to see the brewery’s expansion plans “We get a lot of visitors from their brewery,” she said “We’re lucky to have the employees recommend the restaurant.” When the brewery does finally reopen on the weekends “The lunches during the week are busier,” she said “They bring people regardless … ‘The place they make Spotted Cow’ — everybody knows that.”  Lindsay Christians is an editor for the Cap Times. The Wisconsin DNR announced the "necropsy results," indicating that, at first, there were "no apparent signs of the cause of death" when the creature was discovered deceased on Feb. 5, 2025, in New Glarus. A DNR conservation warden "collected the carcass so that it could be submitted to the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison for necropsy and diagnostic testing," the DNR wrote. "The most pronounced findings from necropsy were emaciation and numerous intestinal worms that impacted nutrient absorption, resulting in emaciation," revealed the DNR. "Heavy loads of intestinal worms are fairly common in birds of prey, with some individuals particularly susceptible due to genetics, immune status or feeding habits. Avian influenza was tested for but not detected." The DNR indicated that the owl did not show any outward signs of problems before its death. "Despite no indication that human disturbance was involved in the owl’s death, this case highlights that looks can be deceiving. For most of its stay, the owl seemed to be doing fine, with many anecdotes of it being active and catching prey," wrote the DNR. "It did not appear to be starving. Yet, it was, for at least the final stages of its life. Moreover, the owl often allowed a close approach, suggesting it may have been trying to conserve limited energy reserves." "Survival for wild animals is a challenge, even without humans. Disease, predation, injury, weather, unfamiliar territory and inexperience are all natural factors that can lead to death," the DNR noted. "Human-related causes, like vehicle collisions, secondary poisoning and electrocution, greatly amplify the toll for snowy owls that visit Wisconsin and other southern latitudes in winter." As a result, snowy owls have a mortality rate nearing 80% for their first year of life, which is the estimated age of the New Glarus bird.
