PFAS did not only end up in Lake Constance
120 cubic meters of contaminated wastewater also found its way into the Thur in Zurich
120 cubic meters of wastewater contaminated with chemicals entered the Thur near Andelfingen ZH at the beginning of 2021
This water pollution started with two incidents involving fire-fighting foam at a company in Goldach SG
the Thur was also polluted with waste water from the company Amcor Flexibles AG in Goldach SG
Energy and Air (Awel) of the Canton of Zurich confirmed a corresponding investigation by the "St
Galler Tagblatt" newspaper on Tuesday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency
The two incidents at the Amcor company at the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021 were already known
toxic fire-fighting foam was released into Lake Constance via wastewater treatment plants
This foam contained perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)
which belongs to the group of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS)
PFOS in extinguishing agents have been banned since 2011; the transition period expired in 2019
A disposal company also brought some of this foam to Andelfingen ZH
"The extinguishing water was fed into the sewer system via an oil separator," Awel wrote to the Keystone-SDA news agency
it made its way to the wastewater treatment plant and finally into the Thur
no "acute" water pollution was detected
the problem is that PFOS hardly degrade in the environment and are therefore harmful in the long term
the disposal company "credibly" explained that it was not aware of the contamination of the transported and disposed wastewater at the time
Amcor itself did not respond to an inquiry from Keystone-SDA until late afternoon
the company told Radio SRF 1's "Regionaljournal Ostschweiz" that it recognized that there had been omissions in the past
A lot has been invested in safety since the incidents
The Tagblatt also reported that large quantities of extinguishing foam had been disposed of correctly

64-year-old Nancy Claman of Upper Arlington vividly remembers watching her uncle Sol stomach fresh horseradish during her family’s annual Seder
a meal marking the start of the Jewish holiday of Passover
“His neck all the way up to his head would turn red,” Claman said with a laugh
Claman and 14 others recalled memories of Jewish family traditions over a Seder put on by the Humanist Jewish Chavurah of Columbus yesterday at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus on the East Side
the Seder begins after sundown on the first day of Passover
an annual eight-day observation of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt
participants read aloud the story of the Exodus
each symbolizing aspects of the story to help preserve its significance
One item is a bitter herb (often fresh horseradish) that serves as a reminder of Jewish suffering under the Pharaoh
Hard-boiled eggs symbolize a festival sacrifice once offered in the Temple of Jerusalem
The group honoring this tradition yesterday doesn’t consider itself to be traditional in that members don’t necessarily believe in God
rather than trying to prove the existence of a Creator
“We’re about as left-wing in terms of Judaism as you can get,” she said
That’s partially why the group had no qualms about holding their Seder yesterday instead of Friday
but now that they’ve found a group more aligned with their views
“To go say prayers to a god you don’t believe in is a terrible feeling,” he said
Participants took turns reading from a Humanist Haggadah and eating the food
The text recounted the Exodus while affirming Humanist values
“We force ourselves to taste pain in order that we may readily value pleasure” read the passage about the bitter herb
reminding us that struggle is better than boredom
said yesterday’s Seder and other humanist events help him to preserve his heritage with like-minded people
“It gives me an identification and people to identify with,” he said
organizers of a separate nontraditional Seder used sweeter foods to attract about 60 observers yesterday
The New Albany campus of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus hosted a chocolate-themed Seder
Instead of hard-boiled eggs and horseradish
most of the foods were kid-inspired: Dark chocolate represented the bitter herb while chocolate milk took the place of wine
It was a great way to introduce 2 1/2-year-old Zachary Goldach and his 7-month-old brother
most of the kids ran off the sugar in the community center gym where the event was held
Others colored Seder-themed handouts and collected prizes
said the lesson of the Jews’ perseverance is vital for younger generations
you need to understand where you’re from,” she said
“In order for kids to be proud of their heritage and proud of who they are
they need to understand the stories and you need to start young.”

Findings Underscore Role Human Behavior Plays in Air Pollution
GOLDACH, Switzerland, March 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- New data from IQAir's global air quality data platform, published in the 2020 World Air Quality Report and an online interactive global map
reveals the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns and behavioral changes on global particulate pollution (PM2.5) levels
"The year 2020 brought an unexpected dip in air pollution
we will likely see an increase in air pollution due to human activity
"We hope this report will highlight that urgent action is both possible and necessary to combat air pollution
which remains the world's greatest environmental health threat."
"While many cities recorded temporary improvements in air quality due to lockdowns
the health impact of burning fossil fuels remained severe
Delhi continued to be the most polluted capital city in the world in 2020
governments must prioritize clean energy sources such as wind and solar and promote low cost
Speeding up the transition to clean energy and clean transport not only saves lives
but also dramatically reduces healthcare-related costs," said Avinash Chanchal
"Many parts of the world experienced unprecedented
as restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a steep drop in fossil fuel consumption," said Lauri Myllyvirta

Key findings from the 2022 World Air Quality Report:
Download the 2022 World Air Quality Report Learn about the state of air quality around the world
While the number of countries and regions with air quality monitoring has steadily increased over the past five years
there remain significant gaps in government-operated regulatory instrumentation in many parts of the world
Low-cost air quality monitors sponsored and hosted by citizen scientists
and local organizations have proven to be a valuable tool to reduce the massive inequalities in air monitoring networks across the world
until sustainable regulatory air quality monitoring networks can be established
These independent air quality monitoring stations reveal disproportional exposure to harmful air pollution among vulnerable and underrepresented groups
Glaring gaps in air quality monitoring data where pollution is likely poor
further underline the need to expand air quality monitoring coverage worldwide
more than half of the world’s air quality data was generated by grassroots community efforts
When citizens get involved in air quality monitoring
we see a shift in awareness and the joint effort to improve air quality intensifies
We need governments to monitor air quality
Air quality monitoring by communities creates transparency and urgency
It leads to collaborative actions that improves air quality,” states Frank Hammes
“Too many people around the world don’t know that they are breathing polluted air
Air pollution monitors provide hard data that can inspire communities to demand change and hold polluters to account
vulnerable communities can be left with no data to act on
Everyone deserves to have their health protected from air pollution,” states Aidan Farrow

Switzerland- Air pollution continues to pose one of the biggest threats to human health
with 90% of the global population breathing unsafe air
The latest data compiled by IQAir, published in the 2019 World Air Quality Reportand the most polluted cities ranking
reveals the changing state of particulate pollution (PM2.5) around the world during 2019
The new dataset highlights elevated air pollution levels as a result of climate change events
and pollution gains from the rapid urbanization of cities
While some achievements have been made in air quality monitoring infrastructure globally
there are still huge gaps in access to data around the world
“While the new coronavirus is dominating international headlines
a silent killer is contributing to nearly 7 million more deaths a year: air pollution,\" IQAir CEO Frank Hammes said.\"Through compiling and visualizing data from thousands of air quality monitoring stations
the 2019 World Air Quality Report gives new context to the world’s leading environmental health threat.\"
2019 air quality data shows clear indications that climate change can directly increase the risk of exposure to air pollution
through increased frequency and intensity of forest fires and sandstorms
in many regions the cause of ambient PM2.5 pollution and climate changing greenhouse gases are linked
namely the burning of fossil fuelslike coal
Urgent action is needed to tackle these emission sources
“While air quality monitoring is increasing
the lack of air quality data in large parts of the world poses a serious problem
as what is not measured cannot be managed,\" added Mr
Hammes.\"Areas that lack air quality information are often estimated to have some of the world’s most severe air pollution
currently has less than 100 monitoring stations that make PM2.5 data available to the public in real-time
More real-time air quality data leads citizens and governments to make better decisions that will improve the lives of millions for decades to come,” added Mr

Goldach, Switzerland 5 March 2019 -- Air pollution will take an estimated seven million lives globally in the next year, while costing the world’s economy nearly 225 billion USD.1,2The latest data compiled in the World’s Most Polluted Cities ranking
reveals the state of particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution in 2018
It highlights a widespread but unequal distribution of PM2.5 pollution and limited access to public information.3,4,5
Executive Director of Greenpeace South East Asia
“Air pollution steals our livelihoods and our futures
there’s an estimated global cost of 225 billion dollars in lost labor and trillions in medical costs
We want this report to make people think about the air we breathe
because when we understand the impacts of air quality on our lives
we will act to protect what’s most important.”
“The 2018 World Air Quality Report is based on the review
and validation of data from tens of thousands of air quality monitoring stations around the world
Now everyone with a cellphone has free access to this data via the AirVisual platform
This has also created a demand for air quality monitoring in cities or regions where no public data is available
Communities and organizations from California to Kabul are supplementing governmental monitoring efforts with their own low-cost air quality monitoring networks
and are giving everyone access to more hyper-local information.”
Climate change is making the effects of air pollution worse by changing atmospheric conditions and amplifying forest fires.7 In addition
the key driver of climate change—burning fossil fuels—is also the main driver of air pollution
globally.8 Therefore tackling climate change will also greatly improve our air quality
“Local and national governments can help tackle the effects of air pollution by providing adequate monitoring and reporting infrastructure
What is clear is that the common culprit across the globe is the burning of fossil fuels—coal
and gas—worsened by the cutting down our forests
What we need to see is our leaders thinking seriously about our health and the climate by looking at a fair transition out of fossil fuels while telling us clearly the level of our air quality
so that steps can be taken to tackle this health and climate crisis,” added Mr
