A much-renovated landmarked house has sold for a recorded $30.795 million on Clarke Avenue in Midtown Palm Beach. The buyer behind the company that bought the house is an as-yet-unidentified Cox family member of Cox Enterprises
the communications and automotive company that once owned the Palm Beach Daily News and The Palm Beach Post
A Delaware-registered limited liability company named 322 Clarke Ave
LLC — named after the property’s address — bought the property
Because of Delaware’s strict corporate privacy laws
no other information about the buying entity was immediately available in public records
But a spokesperson for Cox Enterprises confirmed for the Palm Beach Daily News that a Cox family member
Cox Enterprises was not a party to the purchase
lists the mailing address of the buying entity as that of Cox Enterprises’ Atlanta headquarters
The sellers of the house were investments executive Jay C
who had the the property homesteaded as their primary residence in the latest Palm Beach County tax rolls
The Horgens bought the house — and a vacant lot next door, which they have since sold — in 2014 for a recorded $8.775 million through a limited liability company
the six-bedroom Mediterranean-style residence has 7,979 square feet of living space
and occupies a lot of about two-fifths of an acre
The house is the second one east of Cocoanut Row on the south side of Clarke Avenue
Cox Enterprises is privately owned by members of the Cox family, including two billionaires with houses in Palm Beach — Katharine Rayner and her sister
The Palm Beach Daily News has never confirmed if their billionaire brother
Cox Enterprises Chairman Emeritus James Kennedy
The town designated the house on Clarke Avenue a landmark in 2002, which protects exterior walls in the public view from significant alterations without the permission of the Landmarks Preservation Commission
Although the original design is usually attributed to noted society architect Marion Sims Wyeth
the landmarks board’s designation report does not identify the architect
The house had already had been renovated and expanded when the Horgens bought it from the late businessman and attorney Emmett E
The Horgens then carried out their own extensive renovations, with the designs drawn up by award-winning Palm Beach architect Mark Marsh of Bridges Marsh & Associates
Jay Horgen is president and CEO of Affiliated Managers Group
The international asset-management company makes equity investments in boutique investment-management firms
according to an online description of the company
Broker Christian Angle of Christian Angle Real Estate had the house priced at $34.9 million
Angle and the Horgens could not immediately be reached for comment
Agent Vince Spadea of Douglas Elliman Real Estate acted on behalf of the buyer
He also declined to comment on behalf of anyone connected to the buying entity
The house was constructed for Laurietta Ford von Stresenreuter Filipponi
whose husband presented himself in society as Count Carlo Filipponi
although his Italian title proved to be false
according to newspaper reports from the 1920s
The exterior details include a clay barrel-tile roof
The interiors feature original details such as Cuban-tile floors
The Horgens had the house decorated by Los Angeles-based interior designer Mark D
the interiors were featured in the book "Palm Beach Living" by Jenifer Ash Rudick
the two-story living room is overlooked by a second-floor arcade
The living room is crowned by a painted-beamed ceiling and has sets of French doors with arched fanlights above them
stairs lead to an outdoor observation deck with a castle-style crenelated railing
Other details in the house include a well-equipped kitchen with a work island
an expansive butler's pantry and a breakfast room
The layout also includes a formal dining room
The guesthouse has a cabana-and-bar room near the lap pool
The listing also mentions the “stunning and tropical backyard with oversized loggia
The Tracys bought the home in 1997 from artist Thomas McKnight and his wife
who carried out an extensive renovation that was overseen by Palm Beach architect Jeffery Smith of Smith Architectural Group
The McKnights also acquired and razed a house next door at 301 Clarke Ave.
where they created extensive gardens for the property
The Horgens sold the garden lot for a recorded $5.266 million in November 2020
The Cox family bought the Daily News and The Post in 1969
Cox Enterprises, through its Cox Media Group, announced in 2018 plans to sell the Daily News and The Post
a transaction that closed for $49.3 million
Gannett solely owns the paper as part of its portfolio of newspapers across the company
A dispute over an apartment building in Horgen ZH has already resulted in six court rulings
A planned new building in Horgen ZH has been at the center of legal disputes for years. In the Kalkofen district, a new apartment building is to be built between a historic timber-framed house and a block of flats from the 1970s, reports the "Zürichsee-Zeitung".
The building appeal court has already revoked the building permit for the second time
A total of six court rulings have already been handed down
The legal dispute has already lasted six years
The reasons for the court decisions are manifold
the project was objected to due to its height and later criticized for being too monotonous due to its architectural design
Local residents took legal action against the building project
fearing that the new building would have a negative impact on the townscape
The developer is frustrated by the repeated setbacks
"Someone should understand that," the "Zürichsee-Zeitung" newspaper quotes him as saying
He emphasizes that all requirements have been met and that the planning was carried out in close coordination with the municipality
western shore of Lake Zurich is also under pressure
It had supported the project in order to create urgently needed living space
the repeated court rulings raise questions about planning security and the role of the municipality in the approval process
The situation remains tense for local residents
While some welcome the preservation of the historic townscape
others see the need to create new living space
The case is a good example of how difficult it can be to balance development and monument protection
Whether and when the construction project can be realized is currently unclear
The legal disputes could drag on for years
The developer is challenging the last decision of the building appeal court before the administrative court
And he has already announced that he would take the case to the Federal Supreme Court if necessary

Dana Horgen is an associate teaching professor of chemistry who started in July 2023
She has taught general and organic chemistry labs in her first two semesters for both chemistry and biochemistry majors and non-majors
Intrigued by Hollywood’s portrayal of chemistry
Horgen created a new lecture course for non-science majors called “Foundations of Chemistry” to offer insight into the media’s representation of chemistry and chemical processes in films
He worked in nuclear power…so he was always talking about science and a lot of physics
math and Spanish … I actually didn’t do well in gen chem in college
No one would have predicted that I would be where I am now based on those classes
me and one of my roommates were in the same class
The two of us together would raise the average of the seventy-person class … It kind of made me think
I understand this stuff – and not everyone does
What do you do in your new class “Foundations of Chemistry”
like general chemistry; we’re using a general chemistry textbook
I don’t really expect them to memorize quite the same volume of information [as I expect in my course for science majors
but] every day has a clip in it from a movie or TV show
and it sometimes relates directly to what we are talking about
I showed them a clip from “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” where the goblet of fire is blue
The metal salts and stuff are the same as in the wizarding world
So [as a class we] figure out what metal salts must be present in the goblet of fire to have it be blue and pink
but I will get them into the lab a couple of times because I just think that’s a fun way to experience chemistry
What are your hopes for future classes at Notre Dame
I was given the promise that I could teach this class again
and I can call it “Chemistry on Screen,” which is actually my nickname for it
[Going forward] there’s a lot of opportunity to collaborate with other people on campus
too… I didn’t necessarily come [to the university to teach this course]
so I’m also super excited to work with chemistry majors in the organic lab
and – long term – revamp [and] revitalize the -171 gen chem lab

Texas (KAUZ) - Chris Horgen has been a mainstay in our community
bringing the news to homes around Wichita Falls for nearly 30 years
But behind the camera and out of sight of our viewers
he’s been mentoring the next generation of reporters
We reached out to those who worked with Chris at News Channel 6 for how he affected their careers and personal lives
and they responded en masse from around the country
Read on to see how those in (and out) of the news industry view the Wichita Falls anchor
and true embodiment of what local news should be… Chris is an even better friend
He’s a guiding force and local resource to all who come though Wichita Falls
Working at News Channel 6 was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had and a big part of that was Chris
A lot of people talk about their workplaces as one big family but that really is true with Chris
he was the first person to tell me he was proud of me
He set a collaborative and positive tone in the newsroom - and he was the voice of calm when something went wrong during a live broadcast or when we had 45 minutes to put together a 30-minute show
It takes a lot of talent to carry a 30-minute broadcast on your back while everyone around you is panicking
it’s his kindness and generosity that make him special and irreplaceable
I hope he enjoys his retirement but he will be sorely missed on my and my family’s TV
I was fresh out of college and knew absolutely zero about TV
Chris was always so kind and encouraging to not only me
He is patience and always willing to teach the “newbies”
And if you could catch him on a day when he had a few minutes(which wasn’t often) he has the BEST impersonations that will keep you laughing for days
I am sad that I won’t be able to see his smiling face each night on TV
but so proud of the legacy that he leaves behind
Thank you for all the lessons and advice you gave me when I first began my journey in news
I’m not sure how I would’ve made it through my first two years without the support you gave me
I learned a lot from our talks and even more from watching on your anchor seat
Enjoy your retirement from news and your new career
THANK YOU: Thank you for believing in me and guiding me towards being a great storyteller
Your encouragement and support has led me to where I am now
I’m just one of MANY journalists you’ve made an impact throughout your broadcast career
Chris Horgen is a true example of all three
I started my career as a journalist at News Channel 6
and Chris always took the time to teach and guide me
I’m fortunate to say I still have a wonderful friendship with Chris
laughs and listening when I needed someone to talk to
Thank you so much for the impact you have had in my life
You have taught me so much and I would not be where I am today without your guidance
I CANNOT WAIT to see the next chapter in your life
Chris Horgen is a man who I admire and respect
but by watching him and how he conducted himself both on air and off
He respected the people who worked with him and was kind and understanding of others
I will always remember the experience I had there at News Channel 6 and the things Chris did that helped me get to where I am today
He was great to work with – bigger than life and always quick with a smile
I am so happy for him and I know he’ll love his new position as WF PIO
Chris was one of the first people I looked up to in broadcasting
I thank him for everything he helped do for my career
I know he will do amazing things with his new career path
you’re a bright spot for Texoma and I am proud to say I was able to work at KAUZ
Can’t thank you enough for being a mentor the few times I was able to produce a show with you

who later would become the Titans’ golf coach after Horgen retired
also was on that team with Jim Hurt and Eddie Charlton
“Mike has played on the (PGA) Tour and done nothing but play golf well all these years,’’ Horgen said
“Beau Baugh was the national runner-up for two years.’’
Butch Girard was the medalist when the Titans prevailed in 1976
Brevard then won in 1977 and 1978 to extend the streak to three consecutive years
Horgen left Brevard County for three years to coach golfer Hal Sutton at Centenary College from 1979 to 1981
coaxed Horgen to leave Brevard with a financial offer that Horgen couldn’t refuse
The younger Sutton became a standout on the PGA Tour
After Horgen came back in the fall of 1981 for the 1982 spring season
Former Satellite High standout Steve Lamontagne was the national medalist in 1985
Merritt Island’s Scott Gump and Orlando’s Louie Mitrovich also earned All-America status as members of a team that might have been Horgen’s best
“I had so many great players it’s too many to name,’’ Horgen said
“The most prominent might have been Steve Lamontagne
who’s now director of golf at Suntree Country Club
He was a good athlete with a great attitude who worked hard and loved the game
He loved his teammates and was an all-around winner
It helped that his parents were not golfers
“A second generation golfer gets too much interference from his father
The third generation golfer is OK because his father knows well enough to leave him alone
He remembers how his father already messed him up.’’
Richard Sadler was Horgen’s last national medalist
He won the event when BCC won the 1991 title for its seventh under Horgen
Horgen teaches golf at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman during the summer
“The basic fundamental is to use the body to swing the golf club,’’ Horgen said
you have to let the club accelerate and not be rushed.”
he was able to apply some of those mechanics to golf when he began his career as a coach
“Pitchers make good golfers and hitters not as well,’’ Horgen said
you have to let the club accelerate and not be rushed
and that’s why pitchers make better golfers
They let the speed build and accelerate as they release it not as quick
The vast majority of hitters try to muscle it and force it.’’

ROCHESTER – When Garrett and Rachel Thoma began thinking about starting a family
“We always talked about it over the years that we would entertain fostering or adopting because we never were completely set in stone with the idea that if we were going to have children they would need to be our biological children,” Garrett Thoma said
“We would be able to love and nurture anyone in this world.”
Ben and Alisha Horgen knew the same choices existed if they wanted to grow their family of four
which includes 8-year-old Selma and 6-year-old Henry
… There are a lot of kids that need homes,” Ben Horgen said
both couples have become foster parents-to-be
The Horgens became licensed foster parents last year
but have yet to be matched with children needing foster care
and the Thomases are expecting to finalize their license requirements this week
Their paths toward opening their doors to children needing temporary – or potentially permanent – homes started with a required informational session held every few months by Olmsted County
a Dover-Eyota middle school and high school teacher
said she dove into research before signing up
but still found the session had information that she needed in order to consider options
With the next session planned for April 20
the Olmsted County program manager for adoption and child foster care
said it’s not uncommon for hopeful foster parents to discover new things to consider during the initial session
“I think a lot of people don’t know what it entails,” she said
While the session can lead prospective foster parents to bow out
she said it can also open options for others
especially since several types of foster parents are needed
from those providing emergency shelter and respite care to people looking for long-term commitments
“We always encourage people to think about whether it’s a good fit at the time
because it’s a lot that you are taking on when you are fostering,” she said
The county currently has 109 licensed foster homes
but 42 of them are licensed to care for a relative needing placement outside their home
the county had 116 children in out-of-home care
which puts a pinch on a system that seeks to match each child with the right home
The Horgens have already received two calls about potential placement
One they declined would not be a good match
and the other involved three siblings who ended up moving in with family members
Alisha Horgen said their potential acceptance of three children at once stems from what they learned during the licensing process
She said they initially were open to taking up to two children but discovered that could mean separating siblings
“We just felt heartbroken about that and quickly said we could take three,” she said
acknowledging that they expect to be asked to take even larger sets of siblings
“I’m sure we would say yes to more than three
who pointed out they are learning to be parents alongside being foster parents
said they’ll likely be less flexible on numbers
“We have set our max limit at two children for right now
so we could accept a sibling set if needed,” Rachel Thoma said
the couple said they are open to taking older children
setting expectations at anyone between ages 5 and 18
The Horgens plan to take in ages that match their children or are younger
“We are not ready for teenagers,” Ben Horgen said
Kacir said such limits are important for families
but it also leads to the need for more potential households
we are still not matching up with the needs we have of kids coming into foster care,” she said
She said she believes many myths surrounding foster care have kept potential foster parents from applying
which is why the upcoming information session is important
She said foster parents don’t need to be couples
own their own home or be a stay-at-home parent
They simply need to meet standard licensing requirements and complete 30 hours of state-mandated training
Basic requirements for licensing are being a resident of the county
and passing a criminal and social services background check
A criminal or social services history won’t necessarily bar someone from being licensed
but such reviews are handled on a case-by-case basis
Kacir also said many people don’t understand that the level of commitment can vary
“You don’t need to commit to fostering a kid for a year
… Maybe it’s just providing that weekend care or short-term care for a family in need,” she said
While 60% of Olmsted County youth in the foster care system have seen out-of-home placements range from six months to two years
Kacir said emergency and respite services call for short stays and are essential to the county’s program
The Horgens and Thomas said the flexibility of the program was noted throughout the licensing process
but ours took five months,” Alisha Horgen said of the training process
which was partly delayed to best fit their schedule
interviews and potential safety adjustments for a home
because you are taking care of someone else’s kids
Whether they could or couldn’t do it themselves is not the point.”
Rachel and Garrett Thoma said a variety of research through online videos
blogs and podcasts helped prepare them for what to expect
but both couples said the training helped them better understand the unique needs for the children that could eventually share their homes
“Our kids are 8 and almost 7,” said Alisha Horgen
“We feel like we have a pretty good handle on raising children at this point
but it feels like we needed a re-education on how to care for children who have been through trauma.”
Garrett Thoma said such concerns were an eye-opener
“I have a mentality of rolling with the punches
but the one thing that threw me off guard was parenting style,” he said
“(With foster children) you can’t say ‘go to your room and think about what you’ve done.’”
Rachel Thoma said she sees the trauma-informed parenting skills as being applicable to all children
so some lessons have helped her as a teacher
Ben Horgen also pointed to broader benefits to becoming a licensed
even if the option of taking in children isn’t an immediate goal
you can’t be open to the opportunity,” he said of the potential for helping a family in need
As someone who feels compelled to “run to the messes” and care for others
“There’s nothing messier than kids being taken away from their parents for crappy situations,” he said
because there are kids in the aftermath of that.”
Olmsted County’s next information session for potential foster parents is set to run from 1 to 4:30 p.m
Interested applicants will learn about what is involved and what to expect when becoming a foster
said attending the session does not require participants to move further through the process
but it will provide information to consider before taking next steps
“We talk through a lot of things,” she said

A day after two rescue missions were mounted to assist a stranded cruise ship and a cargo freighter off Norway's western coast
passengers on board the Viking Sky have told of the experience being caught in a storm that generated waves measuring up to 26-feet in height and wind gusts of up to 43 mph
Rodney Horgen, a 62-year-old from Minnesota, told the Associated Press that his wife was swept away from him as a wave broke the cruise ship's glass door and flooded the room they were in with water
"When the windows and door flew open and the 2 meters (6 feet) of water swept people and tables 20 to 30 feet that was the breaker
'This is it.' I grabbed my wife but I couldn't hold on
And then she got thrown back again by the wave coming back," Horgen said
"I knew how cold that water was and where we were and the waves and everything
Horgen was one of approximately 479 passengers airlifted from the deck of the ship when the swells proved too dangerous for smaller vessels to reach the luxury liner
passengers were lifted by a wire into waiting helicopters that carried them to shore
Many of the passengers were evacuated in the overnight hours
Two of the five helicopters used in the rescue mission were briefly rerouted to rescue a crew of nine when a cargo freighter also sent a distress call after engine failure
"Everything was breaking, furniture, glassware. The closet doors were banging back and forth. When we got the signal to evacuate, there was no time to think about getting important things like passports," passenger Susan Dollberg of Novato, Calif. told Norweigan broadcaster NKR, The New York Times reported.
Dollberg told NKR that she and her husband
had friends who remained on the ship overnight
the Norwegian people and the rescue operation have been stellar," Dollberg said
Photos posted to social media on Saturday captured hundreds of passengers waiting for rescue while wearing orange life vests while others displayed damage to the ship from the storm
Videos shared to Twitter showed furniture and other items sliding across rooms as the ship swayed
making it difficult for passengers and crew to remain upright
In a video filmed by California author Alexus Sheppard
ceiling tiles fell from the roof and struck at least one passenger
Sheppard told the AP that individuals with disabilities or injuries were evacuated from the ship first
And when the general alarm sounded it became VERY real," Sheppard told the AP in a text

told the Times that 20 people were injured in the hours the ship was stranded
A separate statement from the Red Cross indicated that many of the injuries were cuts
bruises and broken bones and that all the injured individuals were being treated at a local hospital
"If they had run aground we would have faced a major disaster," Vik said
By Sunday afternoon all four engines had been restored and the ship
When the ship docked 436 passengers and 458 crew members were still on board
called the event "among the worst I've ever experienced," the Times reported
We keep doing the best we can," Hagen said
He added that all passengers would be given a full refund
Viking Cruises said arrangements were being made to return passengers to their home countries
The company has also canceled its next cruise
The company's statement said they did not expect to have any additional cancellations
