EIN: 36-2136497 Terms of UsePrivacy Policy How did a song originally about the Crimean War become an out-and-out Christmas classic There are all-sorts of Christmas songs: Songs about Jesus And there's also been quite a few more serious Xmas songs about the weighty issue of war – which makes sense given Jesus's role as The Prince of Peace (via Isiah 9:6 The very best of those included John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 'Happy Xmas (War is Over)' as well as Jona Lewie's more surprising Christmas hit 'Stop The Cavalry' While Lennon and Ono's song was an unabashed Christmas classic from the outset that wasn't the case with Jona's more downbeat single Read on for everything you could ever want to know about 'Stop The Cavalry' 'Stop the Cavalry' was written and performed by Jona Lewie Jona was a bit of a late developer when it came to scoring chart hits he scored a novelty hit as part of Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs in 1971 but he didn't release his first solo single till 'Cherry Ring' in 1976 He actually wrote 'Stop The Cavalry' when he was living at home with his parents "I was playing about on my grandmother's piano and came up with a particular refrain I liked and kept coming back to," Jona told PRS for Music in 2011 "A little germ of an idea had been planted in my head but one that didn't come fully into fruition for about the next five months." 'Stop The Cavalry' was nothing to do with Christmas at all and in fact it topped the French charts when it was released over there in the middle of summer "The first lyrics I thought of were actually ‘can you stop the gallantry’ about the gallant soldiers of the Crimean War and especially the charge of the Light Brigade," Jona explained "I widened the perspective of the song to be about all wars and all soldiers There’s even a reference to nuclear fall-out shelters in there "I imagined the soldier in this song being an eternal soldier rather like the eternal flame that burns under the Arc de Triomphe.. The central image of the song though is the soldier at the front during the Great War 1914 | Sainsbury's Ad | Christmas 2014 "All the generals and commanders have been out to cheer the poor soldiers on but once they’ve returned home the soldiers are left alone at the front." Christmas always held great resonance with World War I The Great War was infamously meant to be "over by Christmas" but it instead went on for four horrific years In 1914 there was of course the Christmas truce which were even said to have seen football matches played between the warring factions "Christmas Day itself is so cold and so particularly miserable that he wishes to himself that he was back at home it was always intended as an anti-war song rather than a Christmas song." Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry - TOTP 1980 [HD] It was Lewie's punk label Stiff Records who saw the potential of turning the song into a full-on festive cracker, with Lewie telling The Guardian in 2015 about how they made what the label had previously dismissed as "just another antiwar song" sound so seasonal I got a Salvation Army brass band to play the kazoo parts," Jonah said Bob remembered: "I’ve always loved a Christmas single I think it was me who suggested the brass band The music video foregrounded both the war and Christmas angles being filmed in Hampstead Heath with the Salvation Army brass band and set in the trenches of WWI It was filmed a month before the single was released and Lewie didn't have the best time of it "It was snowing and I was freezing cold and bloody uncomfortable," he said "So you could say I was method acting." JONA LEWIE - You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties Jona Lewie's early solo singles failed to trouble the charts but in 1980 he catapulted into the top 20 with his classic 'You'll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties' Despite '...Kitchen...' enjoying 11 weeks on the charts follow-up "Big Shot – Momentarily' flopped and failed to chart altogether in the UK (it scraped into the top 75 in Germany) 'Stop The Cavalry' was released on November 21 with 'Laughing Tonight' on the B-side It went all the way to number 3 in the UK singles charts and was kept off the Christmas number one spot by two very different songs In at number one was St Winifreds School Choir with their novelty hit 'There's No-one Quite Like Grandma' As a former member of Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs St Winifreds School Choir - Theres No-One Quite Like Grandma In at number two was John Lennon's '(Just Like) Starting Over' the lead single from John and Yoko's Double Fantasy album The track had been released in October but rose up the charts after John was murdered outside his New York apartment building on December 8 Lewie was kept off the top by two re-released Lennon singles with 1975's 'Imagine' going to number one for the first time and 'Happy Xmas (War is Over)' at number two "I was very happy to be number three and I never thought at the time, 'Oh it's a pity it's not number one'," Lewie told the BBC in 2009 "I thought 'It's bloody marvellous it's number three'" Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry -13th Dec 2017 With the usual caveats that no-one knows for sure, and the amount varies depending on how many streams, how much radio play and what adverts are using it every year, the Daily Mail estimated in 2015 that 'Stop The Cavalry' earned Jona Lewie £120,000 a year That's more than the hundred grand that Cliff Richard gets for 'Mistletoe and Wine', but less than the cool half million Noddy Holder and Jim Lea share for 'Merry Xmas Everybody'. "I absolutely did not sit down with the idea of writing a big Christmas hit," Lewie admitted to the Beeb "I don't think I would have been able to.: he added: "It's played a major role in terms of looking at my whole catalogue It's provided about 50% of the total income stream." EastEnders - Sean Slater Sings "Stop The Cavalry" (25th December 2008 - Part 1) 'Stop The Cavalry' is a little more quirky than many Christmas hits, so it's not racked up quite the number of high profile covers that say, 'Last Christmas' or 'Merry Xmas Everybody' have enjoyed A few acts have tried to put their own spin on it with Marillion's 2003 version and Sean Slater's EastEnders attempt in 2008 probably the best-known See more Latest Features on Gold Music Hall Of Fame Rod Stewart The Beatles Tom Jones Less than a year after its launch, microbiome profiling startup Jona has already given its user interface a makeover After receiving feedback from users saying they were having some difficulty navigating the startup’s microbiome testing report the company quickly made changes to meet these users’ demands If you’re running a successful consumer- or patient-facing startup acting on user feedback and making the necessary adjustments in a timely manner is “absolutely essential,” said Jona CEO Leo Grady The traditional healthcare system usually doesn’t take a person’s gut microbiome into account when making diagnoses and creating treatment plans, but Grady thinks that it should. The imbalance of the gut microbiota has been proven to affect digestion New York City-based Jona uses AI to help people better understand how this community of microorganisms residing in their gut impacts their overall health The startup offers an at-home gut microbiome profiling kit that analyzes people’s stool samples The platform scours thousands of studies on PubMed and produces a custom report letting users know how this research applies to the makeup of their personal microbiome which becomes available two to three weeks after stool samples are shipped educates users about associations to conditions a user may get a report back saying they have a slight association with Crohn’s disease and have a hard time digesting lactose and shellfish or their report could say their microbiome looks similar to those of people with chronic fatigue syndrome and lupus.  “The microbiome contains an incredible amount of information about your health and can be changed so presenting all this complex information to a user is challenging,” Grady pointed out In the months following Jona’s launch the startup paid close attention to user’s feedback on the product the company’s head of business development She said that users “loved” the science and AI behind Jona’s platform but they found themselves “getting lost” in the report Jona quickly discovered that its interface didn’t do a great job of explaining the insights that its platform generated or users’ recommended next steps The startup knew that it was going to have to redesign the report so that users could get the most out of their microbiome testing Jona’s new interface still provides an overview of the user’s health through the lens of their microbiome but now it does this with a focus on five key areas: GI health skin health and physical performance.  “This overview allows someone to dig into different areas with greater depth and still be oriented where they are with all this information,” Grady explained “In addition to a better user orientation the categories provide an overall picture of a person’s health and they also serve to effectively communicate that the gut microbiome is about much more than just gut health.” The new interface also provides recommendations on how users can act on the report’s findings.  If a user’s health conditions are linked to too low levels of some organisms and too high levels of other organisms it’s not obvious how they would go about bringing these specific organisms back into a normal range only a “tiny sliver” of beneficial organisms are available as commercial probiotics so people often need a set of custom directives in order to change their microbiome “Because our AI has read all the studies on how these changes impact the microbiome we create a digital twin of your microbiome that allows us to virtually experiment with different changes — such as assessing what your microbiome would look like if you went vegan or if you went keto —  and determine a custom set of diet lifestyle and supplement changes that will address the specific issues in your personal microbiome,” Grady said so the startup is unbiased in these recommendations Discover Houston's best orthopedic surgery centers and what features — from personalized treatment plans to rehabilitation services — make these top providers stand out in their industry Discover what tools are essential for efficient safe surgical extractions in today’s health care landscape The layout of your phlebotomy station can significantly impact efficiency A well-thought-out setup ensures that every tool is within reach minimizing unnecessary movement and reducing patient wait times This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. Sephora Thailand celebrated Moo Deng’s stardom by posting on social media about how to “wear your blush like a baby hippo.” She has also drawn a surge in the number of visitors to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand. But zoo officials have limited visitation because of water being poured on her and objects being thrown at her by visitors. In a social media post over the weekend, zoo officials said visitors could see Moo Deng for only five minutes on Saturdays and Sundays. View this post on Instagram A post shared by NPR (@npr) issued a statement last week warning there would be legal consequences for those who harass the beloved hippo "These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous," he said, according to the Nation Thailand "We must protect these animals and ensure that they have a safe and comfortable environment.” Moo Deng was born on July 10 and rose to fame after the zoo began posting videos on social media of her eating and even opening a door. Her mother, Jona, is 25 years old and her father, Tony, is 24 years old, according to the zoo She is the seventh baby hippo born to her parents at the zoo A TikTok page dedicated to animals at the zoo with more than 2.7 million followers has been sharing Moo Deng videos with hippo fan videos gaining millions of views across Instagram as well Her name, which means “bouncy pig,” was chosen by more than 20,000 visitors through an online vote and revealed in late August The pygmy hippo is an endangered species, with only about 2,000-2,500 mature individuals remaining as of 2015, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Their numbers are continuing to decline, as they are hunted for bushmeat and their habitat is destroyed, the Pygmy Hippo Foundation says They are smaller than a common hippopotamus and are primarily found in West Africa in countries such as Liberia Become an NPR sponsor Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application She was married to her husband Bill for 54 years  She is survived by her children; anybody could get bullets Zyfi made her way with her mother and sister to Australia through a human smuggling network the family was expelled from Australia when a calmed Albania was deemed a safe country of origin “I remember my mother packing up our entire life in a shipping container,” she says after a lengthy series of applications and various immigration statuses she is firmly committed to making life better for other migrants and refugees granting them a bigger say in decisions that affect them “our stories are not being incorporated in a meaningful way,” she says The groundswell of private support for Syrian refugees — Zyfi herself was an enthusiastic sponsor — shows that caring for survivors of global crisis is a Canadian value But she says that civil society alone cannot provide the support needed and the government can do more: not only for immigrants deemed to be economically desirable immigration has been key to the Canadian economy It has also been a fundamental tenet of nation building and multiculturalism,” Zyfi says Recipe creator Jona Won brings Chinese-Peruvian influence to “Give a Chef a Steak” For the half-Colombian, half-Chinese content creator Jona Won the flavors of chifa — “essentially the amalgamation of Peruvian spices and flavors in combination with a lot of Chinese ingredients,” he says — show up frequently in his cooking So when it came time to Give a Chef a Steak Won turns a T-bone steak into lomo saltado a traditional Peruvian stir fry usually served with rice and potatoes Won has a few tricks up his sleeve to ensure “bold First is to add a bit of homemade beef stock into the stir-fry: To create his version and Roma tomatoes into a pan containing heated beef tallow giving the ingredients a quick char with a blowtorch Those aromatics then are added into a pot with beef stock from which he’d previously trimmed the meat Garlic ginger confit is another non-traditional addition for “taking it up another level,” Won says To create this cooking paste that can last up to six months in the fridge and oil before sautéing it a hot pan for roughly 30 minutes — stirring every five but “what you’re left with is a very reduced intensified flavor and this beautiful amber color.” he adds beef tallow into a pan before adding the seasoned meat papas fritas are added into the pan before a corn starch and water slurry helps thicken the sauce And because “there’s no such thing as too much starch especially when you’re talking to a Latino,” as Won says the potatoes and rice get just as much attention Won suggests sautéing the uncooked rice grains in beef tallow first to “intensify the beef flavor.” The completed dish — beef and papas fritas — are plated with a quick salsa criolla that provides a touch of acid “The lomo I grew up eating in my house was a bit less traditional — it had some ketchup in there as well,” Won says “This one is a bit more upscale and refined That little bit of effort paid dividends in terms of the final dish.” Watch the latest episode of Give a Chef to glean Won’s tips for bringing big beef flavor to lomo saltado The freshest news from the food world every day tells 8days.sg his sisters have offered to foot the bill Jona Chung placed third in Star Search 2024 Nothing in life is a sure win and Star Search 2024 second runner-up Jona Chung knows firsthand the pain of that Those who followed the competition would know that the 25-year-old Singapore Permanent Resident from Taiwan has the kind of confidence that makes one run for class president The 1.87m-tall private swim coach was never shy to show how eager he is to win and even declared that he thinks he "can be the one to get first place" during a behind-the-scenes interview on Mediacorp's The Dream Competition a series documenting the journey of Star Search 2024 contestants As upfront as he was about wanting the top prize Chung was also very candid about his disappointment at coming in third When 8days.sg caught up with the Orchid Park Secondary School alum two days after the finals he frankly admits that he's not sure if it hasn’t sunk in that he made the top three or that he just feels "okay" about it "I mean I'm grateful that I got Top 3 but as I've said my goal for this competition was always first place," he tells us "Obviously if you’re in a competition you won’t say you’re happy with just Top 12 I was a bit bummed out and felt like I was close." Not that he was feeling any animosity towards champion Tiffany Ho I felt I didn’t perform as well as I should have for some parts,” he says He also looked back at Ho and Bay’s performances and says their wins were “really well deserved” “I wouldn’t be like: 'It should have been me!' because they really did an outstanding job,” he says while turning back to look at Ho who was on the other side of the room He admits he "kinda fumbled during the eloquence test segment" "I could sense [celebrity mentor] Guo Liang's disappointed gaze he pointed out that my problem was how I let my nerves get to me and that day I felt that my mindset wasn’t fully there," he explains Chung is one of the more effectively bilingual contestants and his command of the Chinese language gives him an unassailable edge over his peers We guess that was why he was expecting himself to do well in a segment that pretty much just required him to Here's a fun fact: According to Jona Chung his Mandarin was terrible as a kid until he had to move back to Taiwan at 14 It was worse than an average Singaporean and everything in Taiwan was taught in Traditional Chinese I couldn’t even write my own name in Traditional Chinese It took me so long to get the hang of it," he chuckles THERE IS TALK THAT HAVING JUDGES FROM HONG KONG PLAYED A PART IN TIFFANY HO'S VICTORY WERE YOU AT ANY POINT SECRETLY THINKING: “WHY WEREN’T THERE JUDGES FROM TAIWAN?” that thought has never crossed my mind and I don’t think [having Hong Kong judges] affected the results as much as people would speculate Are you going to accuse them of rigging the results I’m sure we all know they are very professional and I trust their judgement DO YOU THINK YOUR ODDS WOULD HAVE BEEN BIGGER IF THERE WERE TAIWANESE JUDGES I’d hate that as well because even if I were to win based on my skill sets there would always be that nagging thought of: "Did I actually win because they let me?” YOU SCRAPED YOUR HAND DURING THE TALENT SHOWCASE AND THERE WAS STILL FRESH BLOOD ON YOUR HAND AFTER THE SHOW DID YOU FEEL IT WAS A BAD OMEN WHEN IT HAPPENED I only realised I was bleeding much later when someone pointed out: “Eh you’re bleeding" (Laughs) I just used a tissue to stop the bleeding and the only thing that was on my mind was: “Please don’t stain my shirt." YOU MEAN IT DIDN'T HURT AS YOU WERE PERFORMING I think it was because of all the adrenaline It only hurt after the competition ended and there was a small burning sensation I got third place in the end so it’s worth it WHO ARE OLDER THAN YOU BY 14 AND SEVEN YEARS WERE SUPPORTING YOU FINANCIALLY THROUGHOUT THE CONTEST 'CAUSE YOU STOPPED WORKING ENTIRELY My mum was the one who straight up said: “It's okay She also told them: “Help your brother lah" But even if she didn’t say anything they would have offered because it’s a bit hard for me to ask for this kind of thing.. Even as I was prepping for the competition my eldest sister took me out to buy clothes and she paid for everything Everything you saw me wear on Star Search was bought that day THEY GAVE YOU A MONTHLY ALLOWANCE FOR THE FOUR MONTHS YOU WERE IN STAR SEARCH My mum told them to just give me some cash every month but I would spend the money wisely knowing that I don’t even have an income Most of the time it’s just when I’m low on cash my two sisters [who work in the marketing and project management sector] will transfer me money they would say: "Oh sorry I forgot to send you money" and I would be like: "It’s okay DOES COMING IN THIRD MAKE THEIR FINANCIAL SACRIFICES WORTH IT I’m pretty sure it doesn’t belong to me anymore I’m not going to be able to afford the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) My sisters told me I could keep the car and offered to fork out money for the COE My elder sister and her husband were talking about getting a new car so we were saying that they can use this car for now ARE YOU INTENDING TO PAY YOUR SISTERS BACK AFTER YOU START MAKING MONEY AGAIN Maybe not straight up in cash 'cause we’re family and they are not calculative about how much I owe them I would also support them without giving them any pressure [to pay back] And I grew up in a house full of girls ‘cause my dad was in Taiwan It made me not like to hang out with girls for a while YOU PREVIOUSLY SAID YOUR MUM WASN’T GOING TO BE IN SINGAPORE FOR THE STAR SEARCH FINALS I’m not so sure what she was busy with but she managed to make it She stayed at home to watch the finals because [such rowdy places] are not really her scene and some of their friends came down to watch it WERE YOU VERY HAPPY THAT YOUR MUM COULD BE IN SINGAPORE FOR THE FINALS I don’t think it affected me that much either I know some people will get more stressed with family watching them YOU WERE BORN IN SINGAPORE AND MOVED BACK TO TAIWAN I first moved back to Taiwan because my dad retired [from being a volleyball coach] he was mostly working in Taiwan because there was a better job opportunity there my mum decided it was better to move back to stay with my extended family I had to come back for National Service though I had planned to stay in Taiwan for university since it’s cheaper I was accepted into the agriculture course in National Pingtung University of Science and Technology but I took a two-year leave of absence to come back for army WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COME BACK TO SINGAPORE AFTER GRADUATING THEN I've already planned to try out for showbiz and to start out in Singapore before I graduated from university but my parents insisted I finish my studies first Though both Singapore and Taiwan are considered home to me I feel a stronger connection to Singapore since I was born here and I considered myself a Singaporean in my early years based on the environment I grew up in NOW THAT YOU AND YOUR SISTERS ARE ALL STAYING IN SINGAPORE WHO ARE BOTH IN THEIR MID SIXTIES AND RETIRED The people in my family have always been more independent so they just do what they want YOUR MUM WAS A FREELANCE SCRIPTWRITER FOR MEDIACORP AND YOU ACTED IN ONE OF HER DRAMAS EVER THOUGHT OF ASKING HER TO WRITE A SCRIPT FOR YOU TO ACT IN AGAIN One of my motivations is to act in something my mum wrote I did that as a kid once but I didn’t know what acting was back then so I didn’t understand the importance of it I feel that it’s such an honour to do something with family This story was originally published in 8Days For more 8Days stories, visit https://www.8days.sg/ We know it's a hassle to on finding effective ways to merge AI and healthcare," said Jim Breyer CEO and Founder of Breyer Capital. "We believe that Jona has enormous potential to directly impact patient care With its innovative use of LLMs and some of the most advanced applications of generative AI we've seen the company will change how we think about the microbiome and the future of human health." 60-70 million Americans are affected by GI disorders1 the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) reports that as many as 50 million Americans are living with an autoimmune disease costing billions of healthcare spending each year Many of these individuals struggle to find a diagnosis and find effective therapies. Jona's platform aims to equip these individuals with the latest scientific knowledge to discover root causes and develop effective treatment plans Jona is founded by Leo Grady, PhD who is internationally recognized for his work to deliver AI in healthcare for nearly 20 years at pioneering bay area startups (HeartFlow) multinational medical companies (Siemens) and He has built FDA approved AI applications for many areas of medicine cardiology and pathology that are now incorporated into standard care "My family members suffer from chronic conditions like Crohn's They've all had their microbiome tested in hopes of finding relief but the results showed arbitrary scores that were not justified with science and seemed designed to sell supplements It was frustrating because I knew that microbiome science was advancing rapidly and I saw the opportunity for AI to make the microbiome literature more accessible interpretable and transparent for consumers and providers," said Leo Grady "Launching this company is a culmination of my lived experiences and a lifelong career in artificial intelligence and healthcare." Jona has developed a proprietary Large Language Model (LLM) to interpret an individual's gut microbiome and generate a personalized summary of the entire scientific literature based on their unique microbiome profile The first product is an easy at-home microbiome profiling kit that sequences the microbes in an individual's gut microbiome Jona uses this LLM to generate a personalized interactive report with associations to conditions food sensitivities and produces actionable insights on food diet and lifestyle modifications based on their health goals providers can now keep up with and take action on all the latest science as they treat their patients more comprehensively Jona enables accessibility to the latest science on their personal gut microbiome to understand how the microbiome relates to their health and the concrete actions they can take to improve "The research on the microbiome is moving fast toward unraveling its critical role in human health chronic conditions like autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders such as Parkinson's Disease show characteristic microbiome profiles Even sports performance and motivation are potentially related to the microbiome or how you respond to therapies," said Jonas Schluter Chief Scientific Advisor at Jona and Assistant Professor at NYU Langone "One thing is clear: deeply understanding the microbiome will revolutionize healthcare Microbiome medicine is really the new frontier of health and Jona is well positioned to lead the charge." provost for online education and digital innovation You have /5 articles left.Sign up for a free account or log in Kemi Jona has been the vice provost for online education and digital innovation at the University of Virginia since November This seems like a good point in Kemi’s tenure to look forward regarding his work at UVA and back on his higher education career Q: You moved to your current role at UVA from your previous role at Northeastern University where you were the assistant vice chancellor for digital innovation and enterprise learning And what are the big goals and challenges that you are tackling at UVA A: Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this Q&A and for your thoughtful analysis and writing about online and digital issues and trends There is always a lot going on in the space (especially recently) and I value your column to bring important news and perspectives to light The role at UVA was appealing on a number of levels for me UVA is one of our leading public universities and while I have had the privilege to work at several top schools during my career I always wanted to get back to a public institution An animating principle for me is the power of online and digitally mediated learning to enhance access to high-quality educational opportunities and that aligns perfectly with the mission of public higher education I began my academic journey as an undergraduate at University of Wisconsin at Madison—another great public university—and I was excited to be able to contribute to advancing UVA’s role in serving citizens of the commonwealth and our country while UVA has incredible brand recognition and has some pockets of strength in online programs there is so much potential to grow that portfolio in really strategic ways and reach learners that can not relocate to Charlottesville That was another appealing aspect of the role one I find super interesting is that UVA has a reputation as an institution with a strong residential experience finding the sweet spot for reaching new learners via online learning while honoring the ethos of the UVA experience will be key I think we face the same challenges as our peers and those are primarily driven by the macro trends you and others have been covering for some time: the regulatory changes being advanced by the Education Department and how they will impact both online and traditional programs changing preferences of both learners and employers and an increasingly crowded online marketplace in computer science and moving through various faculty What career advice do you have for anyone thinking about the steps necessary to ascend to a university’s top online education/digital innovation role A: I think my background and training as a researcher and developer of learning technologies has helped me a great deal along the way To be successful in this type of role means deeply understanding the affordances of new technologies and how they might best support teaching and learning in exciting new ways higher education needs innovation more than ever and simply offering commodity programs as the market gets increasingly crowded just won’t cut it My advice for those thinking about leading in this space is to always bring forward creative ideas that will push the envelope beyond business as usual How can digitally mediated learning help advance the mission of your institution or serve new populations in ways that might not have been feasible before If you can add value to the leadership conversation in these ways What should those of us leading our institution’s online learning efforts be worried about most A: You and others at Inside Higher Ed have been covering the perfect storm facing higher education in the coming decade: a shrinking population of high school graduates but we must navigate all of them at once along with the unanticipated second- or third-order effects will colleges that find themselves in financial straits stampede into online offerings to stay afloat What impact will that have on the marketplace and consumers’ decision-making How will schools differentiate their online offerings and attract learners if there are 10 to 100 times more programs than today but it is also a tremendously exciting time for those of us in the online and digital learning community The role of online learning is only going to get more important to the viability of higher education institutions and their ability to achieve their missions this is an exciting window of opportunity for those leading online learning at their institution to step up and meet the moment And I expect to see a lot more collaboration and not just competition in the years ahead Do your students think you’re a neo-Marxist Gabel about her visual memoir, Cherry Hill: A Childhood Reimagined (Monacelli Press) her troubled childhood growing up in the suburbs of New Jersey Frank’s mother suffered from mental illness who was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia three different actors portray Frank at various stages of her adolescence with actress Laura Dern cast as her mother augments the original photography in Cherry Hill As Arthur Lubow pointed out earlier this year in a New York Times feature about Frank’s latest book Jona Frank has “recreated non-Kodak moments the kind that were hidden rather than commemorated.” Jona Frank: All my previous work has been photography but I carried these stories around with me and I thought about how my photographs all came out of personal experiences For every iteration of the book—really until the very very end—this was gonna be the first page of the book all we photographers photograph is ourselves and the other I remember the day in my studio that I had all these pictures from High School and I was editing them and realized as I looked at all these faces of these high school students from all around the country that I had recreated my own high school experience “this is that person” and “this is that person and that person,” and I understood at that moment what Evelyn Hofer meant: all of our photographs come out of our own experience It was the same with the religious right project if I became really devoted to my religion would it be as much a part of my life as it was for these kids There’s a root to everything I’m doing in my own life And really what I’m doing with this new work is turning it on its side and saying “I’ve made portraits of all these other people for so many years that now I’m going to make this portrait of myself.” But if I was going to tell this story I needed to write it as well as photograph it The writing is meant to feel photographic; it’s meant to feel like there are these blurred edges between beginnings and endings and that some of it has the brevity of a snapshot but we sort of move in and out of this period of my life Gabel: I really loved the stylization of the photographs and the recreation of the set pieces from your own life The book is building toward this rejection of the supposedly idyllic suburban existence of postwar America I think that thread runs through this book pretty clearly But there’s a lot of playful moments and a lot of humor too and I think it was really fun how you balanced that out because there’s obviously some serious stuff with both your mother’s mental illness and your brother’s as well JF: I actually love that you pointed out the humor because obviously those are heavy issues with my mother and my brother but I really wanted there to be my sense of humor in it and part of me hopes people see that there’s also things in it that are meant to be funny—the absurdity of the repetition of this life I guess we can call it the Lucky Charms Incident where you bump into this display at a grocery store but to break that up with all the other stuff going on in the book was delightful and I assume that was partially Alan Rapp and some of the other folks on your team who were responsible for you sequencing this in this order Or did you have the sequence in your head yourself as you were doing it I had a pretty strong sense of the sequence and when I started writing I knew where I wanted to end up I knew that I wanted to end backing up out of that driveway and headed to wherever I’m headed What you have to do is go; you don’t have to specifically know where But there was a pretty loose thread through the book that school would be the anchor and that would be the path that we follow but I worked with a writing teacher and I loved the writing I mean I loved it in a way that I didn’t expect to love it I found it really fulfilling having this exchange with people and photographing people and spending time in their world but there was this solitude in the writing The way things would work out in my head—it was amazing to me “You’re gonna really indulge in the writing and it’s gonna be incredibly fulfilling,” I just don’t know if I would have believed them But I also will say that sometimes the writing made me feel a little bit crazy When I was really in the midst of writing I couldn’t see people I remember that twice I tried to meet a friend for coffee or something and I had this incredibly strange experience of seeing words “I’m sorry I have to leave” really abruptly I have good friends who forgave what must have seemed like lunacy at the time Created by Grove Atlantic and Electric Literature Masthead About Sign Up For Our Newsletters How to Pitch Lit Hub Privacy Policy Support Lit Hub - Become A Member Lit Hub has always brought you the best of the book world for free—no paywall you'll keep independent book coverage alive and thriving Melinda Goldrich and Andrea Goldrich Cayton have donated $10 million in honor of their late father, Holocaust survivor and prominent Los Angeles real estate developer Jona Goldrich, Cedars-Sinai announced today The gift will establish the Jona Goldrich Center for Alzheimer's and Memory Disorders to be established within the Cedars-Sinai Department of Neurology will recruit physician-scientists to develop new patient-care therapies that address the challenges of the rapidly growing population of patients with Alzheimer's disease and other memory disorders The Goldrich family has committed to giving an additional $5 million in matching donations potentially doubling the funds for the center to $20 million "This generous and transformative gift from the Goldrich family is an enduring testament to Jona's life," said Thomas M. Home the show features an immersive installation created by the artist Jona Frank (American born 1966) in collaboration with the designer Alex Kalman Growing out of a photographic project designed to document her upbringing in Cherry Hill Jona Frank: Model Home addresses the challenges the young artist experienced attempting to conform herself to her mother’s traditional expectations the artist simultaneously acknowledges and subverts the suburban rituals with which it is associated Tacitly pointing to the common tendency to “perform” a particular role for the camera Frank’s self-investigation does not directly picture the photographer and her family but instead uses surrogates: actor Laura Dern portrays her mother while younger actors depict a maturing Frank Forbidden as a child from handling the family camera (an experience “documented” by Frank) the artist plays with the residue of memory filtered through snapshots In this assemblage of unsettling “Kodak moments,” pictures brandish moments of aggressive suburban pride: an expectant young mother places her hand over her abdomen with a knowing smile; mother and daughter in matching outfits show off “picture-perfect” pies such photographs will be interlaced into an environment replete with toile wallpaper that playfully echoes “decisive moments” in the life of the photographer while simultaneously threatening to engulf her Also present is the rotary dial phone that seemed to bring only life-shattering pronouncements and a meticulous recreation of a birthday party gone awry Colorful embroideries both reference the handiwork traditionally associated with “woman’s work” and humorously elevate the seemingly mundane to objects worthy of real attention filled with suggestive artifacts such as cherry blossoms and “lucky charms,” evoke the “Visible Man” educational toy that intrigued her as a child while simultaneously raising questions about the qualities that enable others to “see” us or that seem to make us “invisible” to others At the center of the exhibition stands a miniature sculptural facsimile of the artist’s childhood home through which viewers can watch projections of the domestic tableaux unfolding within The exhibition serves as a counterpoint to the photographs it features bringing the viewer back into contact with the physical environment that so powerfully imprinted the mind of the artist as a young girl “From the very beginning of this project I have been interested in playing with the structures of storytelling,” Jona Frank explains “In addition to using photography to explore the feelings and tensions I felt as a child this project has also been about translating the sensations of childhood into a narrative experience Model Home has provided the opportunity to bring my photography to life through an experiential installation that enables viewers to enter the world I encountered in Cherry Hill and to find some elements of their own childhood experience within it.” Keenly aware that her own transition from “daughter” to “artist” occurred at a stage in life similar to that of college students Frank has benefitted a great deal from the work of students at Bowdoin when Frank was on campus to discuss her project informally Daniel Rechtschafen ’18 agreed to represent Frank’s brother in a photograph in the Cherry Hill series visual arts majors Cameron Snow’22 and Andria Polo Brizuela ‘22 as part of internship projects at the BCMA reviewed pictures shot by Frank in her early 20s as she sought to find her own voice as a photographer Comparing these to Frank’s mature work they identified photographs reflective of her desire to break away from the world of Cherry Hill These images in turn revealed themes she would continue to explore over the course of a career largely concerned with exploring youthful attempts to assert one’s identity Selections and recommendations made by Snow and Brizuela will inform Frank’s installation of her work Frank’s photography and the installation of Model Home as a whole reflects ongoing attention on the artist’s part to the question of how we achieve that particular alignment between youthful dreams and mature accomplishment that enables us to feel that we have somehow become ourselves and challenges us to consider: “what else?” Whether for students contemplating the steps they will take after completing school or for those of us who have settled into careers and familiar habits what more powerful—or important—question can art offer to its audience Jona Frank: Model
