The Bemidji High School volleyball senior is aware she was given the gift of gab
she was a natural at directing traffic and praising teammates in a quarterback-esque style
“I’ve been told I like to talk and I’m always loud
So I think I just got put into it because I talk so much
I filled into the role because I like leading the team and I like coaching up my players in the back row and the front row.”
The timeline for Anderson to step into the varsity setter position for BHS couldn’t have been more seamless
and head coach Alicia Kriens turned to her star freshman
It was the start of a storied Bemidji volleyball career
“Her dedication to her role and her willingness to do whatever is asked of her
it’s something you don’t find in a lot of kids,” Kriens said
You will never see a ball dropped by Margie
It’s 765 more assists than 2015 grad Alexa Greendahl had
who previously held the school record for the most in program history
Anderson broke Greendahl’s record in the 2023 Section 8-4A Tournament quarterfinal
Bemidji is set to begin 8-4A Tournament play at 6 p.m
The fifth-seeded Lumberjacks (19-10) are carrying over their “underdog mindset” that pushed them to the section championship match a year ago
“Being one of the smaller schools compared to the schools we play
we continue to have that mindset,” Anderson said
and we’re pumped to play in sections again
That was my favorite game of the whole season last year
she was thrown into the fire with the big girls
playing on a varsity volleyball court before she had her driver’s license
It’s a privilege given to select players at the Class 4A level
Anderson helped pace BHS to a record of 14-14 and a Section 8-4A semifinal appearance
She was voted a team captain a year later as a sophomore
“I’ve had the best teammates I could ever ask for,” Anderson said
all of the seniors took me under their wing
it allowed me to be a captain my sophomore year
pushed me to give it my all and encourage my teammates to be the best they can be.”
Anderson came into her own with the help of a unique connection with her head coach
“I think it puts more pressure on them because that was my spot,” Kriens said
“The expectation level is very high because I know what it takes to run a good offense and what it’s supposed to look like
As much as I praise Margie and all of the good things about her
Anderson and Kriens’ competitive relationship is a two-way street
Kriens admits she expects Anderson to play at a level others can't
and Anderson welcomes the constant guidance
she tells me what I can do to fix it so I can better the ball next time
… It’s super nice to have a setter (as a coach)
all of the little things that make a setter good.”
The trust built between Kriens and Anderson was built early on
Anderson has been the steady sense of consistency the Lumberjacks have leaned on in her four years on the court
It’s also what will make her departure so difficult after this season
“I like to take my setters pretty early because it’s such an important role,” Kriens said
we’re going to struggle to find somebody to fill her shoes
somebody with her intensity and drive and love for the game
Margie was the one texting me to get in the gym early and getting extra work in
She pushed herself to get what she’s accomplished.”
Kriens sees aspects of herself in Anderson
She called the setter position a “thankless job,” one that exemplifies the willingness to take a back seat in the kills department to better facilitate the Jacks’ offensive production
“People don’t realize the amount of time you have to spend in the gym,” Kriens said
Your job is to better that ball every single time
You’re expected to get that ball to the hitter in the perfect spot
That expectation has been upped every single year
Her poise and the way she handles herself on the court
Anderson is no stranger to reaching milestones
Anderson is 18 assists away from hitting another benchmark: 3,000
It could prove to be a near-unbreakable record
“It’s way more than the record she broke last year
3,000 is a crazy number to even get close to,” Kriens said
“She’s way up there in the all-time assist leaders for the state
A lot of the girls ahead of her around the state are from smaller towns and have been setting since they were in seventh grade
Margie had an opportunity to start as a freshman
and I don’t know if she ever thought this would be the case.”
Anderson recalls each of her milestone celebrations vividly
“I remember my team being there for it and cheering me on,” Anderson said
“I’ll never forget those moments when they were supporting me and making me feel awesome about it.”
Anderson believes she gained the confidence to put together a historic career when she was named captain before the 2022 season
“It’s a big privilege to have your teammates vote for you to be a leader,” she said
“It holds me to a higher standard of being positive
I couldn’t be as encouraging as I am without them
they did so much to get me to this point.”
Anderson doesn’t turn down chances to celebrate Lumberjack success
The BHS senior is the ultimate teammate on and off the court
Spectators can routinely find her in the front row of the student section during Bemidji sporting events
no matter what sport or activity it is that’s going on,” Kriens said
constantly looking out for everybody other than herself
She is the biggest fan of every person on our team
and she does that for all of her friends across the board
It says a lot about her character and her heart.”
A setter with Anderson’s pedigree typically draws interest from the collegiate level
she said this is likely her last season playing volleyball
She plans on studying nursing or oncology in college
with an interest in providing care to cancer patients
With collegiate volleyball not part of her future
Anderson is playing to keep her career alive in the Section 8-4A Tournament
It’s a pressure-cooker situation she’s grown accustomed to
“It takes a lot of hard work and drive to get (to state),” Anderson said
she intends to cherish her final coaching moments with a player she’s grown close to
and she will be greatly missed when she’s done here,” Kriens said
“Being the one person who touches the ball every single play
Her being able to take all of that training and put that ball in the wheelhouse of a hitter so they can take a good swing and be confident

Kadetten Schaffhausen are in the playoff final again this year
Kriens-Luzern cut the deficit to 1:2 against BSV Bern
The defending champions Schaffhausen also won the third game of the best-of-five series against Suhr Aarau 32:22 and advanced to the final without defeat
It is the 19th time in the last 20 years that the Kadetten have reached the final
Kadetten's best scorer in their sixth win in the sixth play-off game of the season was Odinn Rikhardsson with nine goals and a shooting percentage of 90 percent
The finalists of the last two seasons picked up their first point against BSV Bern with a 29:23 win
thus fending off their opponents' first match point
Kriens' eight-time scorer Luca Sigrist converted six out of six penalties
goalie Kevin Bonnefoi shone like Bern's Mathieu Seravalli with 16 saves
Game 4 of the second semi-final will take place next Thursday (18:15) in Gümligen
It would be Bern's first qualification for the final in 35 years
ShareSaveSmall BusinessEntrepreneursThis CEO of a Billion-Dollar Tech Company Built a Retreat Center Where Leaders Can Unplug, Grow, and Look WithinByRob Dube
Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights
I write about mindful leadership and leading positive businessesNov 25
08:11am ESTShareSaveThis article is more than 5 years old.By 2004
Scott Kriens was already a Silicon Valley veteran and success story
He started his career working for a once-penniless tech company that took off and was acquired by Cisco Systems for $4 billion in 1996. Next, he joined Juniper Networks as the company's CEO
Juniper is worth over $4 billion and currently employs more than 10,000 employees worldwide
Money and business success was great—but was it everything
both of which would guide countless people to find a deeper meaning within their own lives
It also shaped Scott into an even stronger business leader with invaluable wisdom for aspiring and veteran entrepreneurs alike
Scott had already been working in Silicon Valley for nearly two decades
but he still felt like there had to be more to life
"I saw myself chasing after widgets and dollars," Scott says
"I looked around at what I was doing and said
that doesn't really matter.'"
These feelings only escalated once his father passed away
"I sat with him right after he had passed," Scott remembers
'What matters between now and the time my time comes?'
Confronted with mortality and desire to find purpose
He'd heard how meditation had assisted others in finding these answers
"Meditation came to me as a tool or an invitation in response to that question [of purpose]," he remembers
and I've just been with it ever since."
Since taking on a regular meditation practice
Scott's views on life have changed immensely
Business leadership is still a crucial part of his life
but he's also sought to incorporate other pieces that added extra meaning to the totality of his existence
As for whether he's answered that big question about purpose
"I'm not sure I'll ever know the answer
or if there even is one," he says "But
I'm pretty sure that the place to look is inside of yourself
It's about finding a deeper connection—and not just searching elsewhere to find it
It's the way that you do it.” — Scott Kriens
Scott joined Juniper Networks as their new CEO
Fast forward less than a decade and the tech company was worth about $2 billion
he was conflicted about what strategies were best for leading such a diverse—and massive—worldwide team
This was also around the time that Scott discovered meditation
His new practice offered him previously untapped space to reflect upon his new role and better analyze how to lead his company effectively
he began contemplating how to influence his people best
even though it was impossible to connect with thousands of employees personally
"I found that what really matters is leadership development," remembers Scott
"I can't always be at the point of impact
so I have to best train the people who are."
leadership training wasn't all about showing others how to do the job itself well—it was also about being true to the company's core values
if the leaders aren't actively living those values
there's no way the rest of the team will
those values will trickle down and inspire the entirety of the company
It'll also offer a new level of trust and authenticity
as it shows that everyone is equally expected to commit to their organization's mission
great leaders must do more than give orders and assume they'll be followed because of some hierarchy
the team might coast by doing the bare minimum
"Here's something that Roosevelt said a long time ago," says Scott
"'Nobody cares what you think until they know who you are.' That's because if I don't trust the person and I'm not seeing who a person is in front of me
then I'm not going to embrace whatever they tell me."
Scott knows he's fortunate in a multitude of ways
he also believes it's his responsibility to give back
In 2011, Scott and his wife Joanie started the 1440 Foundation
The philanthropic nonprofit's overarching goal was to assist leaders in building compassionate
authentic relationships with their communities through grants
it became apparent that they needed a space that was bigger than the Kriens' home office
That's when Scott and Joanie heard about a cluster of abandoned buildings at a nearby defunct Bible college outside of Santa Cruz
Once they saw the property nestled beneath the centuries-old redwoods
"I love building things," says Scott
he instead saw this "mess" as an empty canvas with incredible potential
Inspired by the setting and energy surrounding the space
the once rather modest concept rapidly evolved
"We followed it more than we led it," says Scott
"It was all about creation." And what they created was a 75-acre campus complete with restaurants
"The premise when building this place was for every square foot to potentially be a spot where something important or memorable could happen for one person," Scott says
every square foot needs to be treated as if it were the most important square foot in this whole place."
Now containing much more than just a nonprofit
they named this space the 1440 Multiversity
The Kriens' goal is for the Multiversity to become a destination for individuals—especially those in business—to connect both with themselves
These conversations may stem opportunities for growth
and bulletproof personal and professional relationships
It's about stimulating energy in people
we can look at things in new and different ways."

Editor’s note: Caregiver Scott Kriens recently wrote about his wife Joanie’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment, including clinical trials. We are publishing an excerpt of the story – you can read the full piece here
Scott says: “We share our story with great hope that it may ease the journey for others
my wife Joanie had a routine blood test that revealed a suspiciously elevated biomarker
typically indicative of the possibility of cancer in the pelvic area
Our first response was that this must certainly be a mistake and a retest would confirm that
Joanie was perfectly healthy with no discomfort or cause for concern
leading to an ultrasound that revealed what was
the worst possible news – there was evidence of a mass
strongly suggesting cancer was indeed present in Joanie’s ovaries
After facing the reality of the prognosis we made a decision
or anything else that could be removed to prevent the spread of disease
as there was still a need for chemotherapy to be sure the disease would be put to rest
with the expectation that regular access for intravenous delivery of chemotherapy would be required for six-plus months
All of this was made bearable by the knowledge that the surgery was behind us
it was all part of the recovery and subsequent return to normal life for the next several decades
Upon returning to see the surgeon three weeks after the hysterectomy to have a review of the procedure and confirm our progress
The biopsied tissue was tested in routine pathology following surgery
The tumor tissue was indicative of a different point of origin for the cancer
At this point, we were sent to a different doctor, to discover a different and potentially much more lethal disease – pancreatic cancer
After walking numbly across the hospital campus in a fog of disbelief, we found ourselves in the parking lot, unable to start the car, unable to even comprehend what had just happened. We expected to be well on the way to cure of a stage III ovarian cancer, and instead were told we were in a fight with a stage IV pancreatic cancer diagnosis
We found PanCAN
an excellent organization dedicated to helping patients by fighting pancreatic cancer in a comprehensive way
We contacted Stanford and found a trial for Joanie
all of which responded to treatment and shrunk by 60 to 80%
Along with these results, CA 19-9, a measurable biomarker that can signal cancer growth
was falling from a high of 17,000 to less than 100
until progress stalled and the masses remained at their reduced levels
an indication that the tumor was active and growing
tissue from the tumors found in the ovaries was sequenced to see the precise genetic makeup of the tumor mass
We had the individual signature from the biology of Joanie’s disease
We cannot stress enough the importance of this step -- biomarker testing -- when faced with a cancer diagnosis of any type
The findings from the biomarker testing led us to another trial
which explored if existing drugs originally designed for one type of cancer could be treatment options for other cancers
This disease and its prognosis were not a given
It became clear to us that attitude and belief matter
and it matters in the approach and commitment of the team surrounding that patient
Along with the latest advances in cancer science and therapies
gratitude and resilience were an important and absolutely necessary part of the treatment and outcome
Joanie has no evidence of disease and has had clear scans for more than 18 months
to reduce a potentially terminal cancer to a chronic condition that can be managed
We also know that it is dangerous to casually declare a cure
We are grateful to have found so many dedicated and committed caregivers for all the treatments we have been fortunate to receive
Below are the 10 most important things we have learned throughout our journey:
mentioned in this story may not be appropriate or available for all patients
Doctors take many things into account when prescribing treatments including the stage and type of cancer and the overall health of the patient

the first phase of the development of the project with over 500 apartments and 16,500 square meters of commercial space has been completed
The development plan and the amendment to the zoning plan and building and zoning regulations for the Bell site in Kriens were approved by the cantonal government in mid-October
The project was developed jointly by the landowner Logis Suisse AG and the town of Kriens
Although the construction work "for the new part of the town of Kriens" will not start until 2028 at the earliest
the first phase of the conversion and redesign has been successfully completed with this decision
The development plans have been worked on in dialog with the population since 2019
"The cooperative and participatory approach chosen was and is the key to the success of the Bell site," says Maurus Frey
the development plans will be fleshed out further and a concrete construction project will be drawn up
The area was used for industrial purposes for over 160 years
The development plan is intended to ensure that the industrial past remains visible
New buildings as well as conversions and extensions to existing industrial buildings are planned
at least 40 of which will be % non-profit apartments and some of which will be condominiums
There will also be around 16,000 m² for commercial
6,500 square meters are earmarked for public open and green spaces
The first apartments should be ready for occupation from 2031

Ade Adeniji | December 13
There are 1,440 minutes in day. Joanie Kriens started thinking about that one day while in the midst of a few self-aware moments gardening in her backyard. Out of this, Joanie and her husband Scott Kriens had the name for their new charity, 1440 Foundation
which “aims to improve the state of the world… one person
has come in waves over the past few decades
While companies like Facebook and Google get all the attention these days
an earlier era of tech entrepreneurs made their fortunes creating hardware and software
who made his wealth in computer networking equipment
He’s been part of the action in Silicon Valley for over 30 years
Kriens rose through the ranks of Silicon Valley
which was eventually acquired by Cisco Systems
Kriens is currently chairman of the board of Juniper Networks in Sunnyvale
But like a lot of winners in Silicon Valley who stay out of the spotlight
he’s done well enough to give in a significant way
he and Joanie have done quite a bit of thinking about how best to do that
Kriens expressed gratitude for all his success in Silicon Valley
but also says he wishes he had other skills when he was coming up
vulnerable and transparent relationships” is something he wished he knew how to do better back then
and is something that he and Joanie champion now
Kriens had a bunch else to say when I spoke to him about how the family’s charitable strategy has shifted from writing checks to an operational role in the cause they care most about
The couple got their feet wet in philanthropy in 2010 when they founded 1440 Foundation purely as a grantmaking operation
The central premise guiding them was that being in true and authentic relationships is essential to all we do in life
it’s also something for which we receive very little training
This seemed like an area where philanthropy could make a difference
Kriens and Joanie spent time hunting down leading actors and teachers in this space, and then began making grants through their foundation. Grantees through the years have included GirlTrek
a “peer network and a growing grassroots movement of thousands of African-American women and girls who are committed to walking for better health,” and the Center for Mind-Body Medicine
While Kriens feels that a lot of this initial work was helpful, and hopes it moved the needle, he and Joanie wanted to execute their vision more fully. That’s why the couple transitioned from purely making grants to creating 1440 Multiversity, a new immersive learning center near Santa Cruz. The center describes its vision this way:
Learning to be in strong, meaningful, and authentic relationships—with ourselves, with each other, and with the world around us—is the most important work we can do. The goal of 1440 Multiversity is to help each of us craft and live more integrated lives—both personally and professionally.
The center, which opened earlier this year, sits on a beautiful 75-acre campus in a Redwoods setting and offers short-study courses on weekdays and the weekend that aim to be transformative. The campus includes residential halls and classrooms, and is anchored by a massive post-and-beam lodge. The venture bears some similarities to Kripalu, the wellness center in Stockton, Massachusetts.
Kriens chose “the backyard of Silicon Valley,” as he describes it, because it fills a critical need in the community. He has a point. The tech industry is known for its work-obsessed culture and entrepreneurs who are often brilliant, but not fully developed as people. Many put off the work of building more integrated lives until later, after they’ve had success—if they ever undertake such work at all.
“Why does all of this have to happen serially?” Kriens asked. He built jobs, created companies, and spent years on a treadmill, only to discover later on what he really wanted to get out of life. Kriens hopes 1440 will get to people in their 20s and 30s while they’re just getting started in life and their careers so that they can learn these skills and lessons earlier.
One of the reasons Kriens wanted to build an actual campus was because he wanted it to be a real place with a footprint. “This can’t be something you read about or watch on TV… [it needs] to engage the whole person,” he emphasizes.
For Kriens, though, the work that happens at 1440 is only the beginning. He says one of the challenges is to bring these experiences back into the world and apply them on a daily basis. Kriens calls it the “arc of multiversity”—something that should begin well before people even arrive on campus, and continue long after they leave.
Some readers are probably clucking their tongues at this point about what the Kriens are up to with their philanthropy. With millions of children dying around the world from preventable causes each year, is nurturing personal development in one of America’s richest regions really where donors should be focused?
We’ll leave that question to others. What’s clear is that there are a lot of ways to engage in philanthropy. To some, the extraordinary diversity of donor interests is exactly what’s strongest about this sector.

HC Kriens Luzern will write a new chapter in the club's history in the 2023/24 season
they will play group matches in a European competition
while their previous biggest success was the quarter-finals of the former EHF Challenge Cup back in the 2011/12 season
One of the best Swiss clubs started their ambitious project with the comeback of legendary player Andy Schmid in 2022
and they have been building the squad for big things
The 2022/23 season ended in a great way - they won the club's first trophy
celebrating against Kadetten Schaffhausen in the domestic cup and they went all the way to the play-off final where the same opponent was better on the day in the battle for the the Swiss title
Kriens has further strengthened the team and is looking forward to fighting for new trophies at home
but also to giving their best on the European courts and gaining valuable experience
Being one of three Swiss representatives means a lot and in Schmid's last season as a professional player
before he takes over the Swiss national team
they would like to leave their mark in the EHF European League Men
Among strong players who are eager to star in the second-tier are two Croatian line players - Marin Šipić and Željko Musa
Šipić joined from RK Zagreb in the summer of 2022 and soon showed all of his skills
Even though his original idea was to stay in Switzerland for a year
he is now going into his second season with Kriens
I did not plan to stay for more than one season
I prolonged for one more season and I am already thinking about staying a little bit more,” says Šipić
Šipić is back in European competition after a one-year hiatus and he is bringing EHF Cup and EHF Champions League experience with him
The 27-year-old line player dreams big but at the same time stays grounded
“I am excited to play in the EHF European League
I can't wait for the season to start and as I said
this is the first time the club will play in this stage of the competition
Realistic goals are to play finals of the play-off in the domestic league and cup
We know that is not going to be easy with good teams in our league
especially Schaffhausen but we will give our best
progressing further from the group matches would be a good start,” adds Šipić
An EHF European League Men champion with Magdeburg at the first edition of the EHF Finals in 2021
Željko Musa followed the same path as his teammate
The experienced Croatian international came from Zagreb ahead of the 2023/24 season and will be of great help for the eighth club in his career
“The EHF European League is a great competition
It's getting tougher and tougher each season
There are many clubs that could play in the EHF Champions League
It is important for Kriens to be among those teams and for our sponsors also
We want to present ourselves in Europe and to show we are a good team,” says Musa
Playing together in Zagreb and the Croatia national team gives them a good starting point to transfer the energy to Kriens
“I was excited when I heard the news Musa is coming here
We know each other very well on and off the court
playing together in defence and he helps in the attack when I need a rest
It is great to have someone experienced like Musa with me in the club
in the same position and to receive advice when you need it,” says Šipić
Željko Musa was equally content to have a well-known face at the club
And when it comes to talking about Šipić's abilities
he was one of the reasons why I joined Kriens
Šipić is number one on the line and my role is to help in defence
7-against-6 play and to help him when he needs a rest in the attack
among the top five in Europe if you ask me when it comes to attack
I am happy I can help sometimes with advice even though he is already an experienced player
He is getting better and better in defence
proving he is a player in both ways,” explains Musa
Kriens Luzern will try to reach their first goal - the main round
who was playing in the Polish league with Industria Kielce and the German Bundesliga with Magdeburg
“Hannover is the favourite in each match of the group
AEK made some strong signings and Zabrze is coming from a good Polish league
Our goal should be to try to win as many points as possible
This will be a great experience for the whole team,” says Musa
His teammate Šipić had to add: “I don't want to sound arrogant but I think we can play against anyone in the group
especially at home in front of our fans and if we are injury-free
We had many of those at the start of preparation but if we all will be ready for the start of the European competition
