VOLTA, and how ceramic design can become a platform for sustainability and sensory experience ‘There was no reason to reinvent the wash basin we had already spent 12 years reinventing typologies textures… but this was about new functionality,’ starts Viardot our conversation in Milan LAUFEN and designer Yves Behar present VOLTA | all images courtesy of LAUFEN the electric kiln signals a shift in ceramic design – one that brings sustainability into dialogue with both functional and aesthetic ambition ‘The starting point was the electric kiln – a major innovation,’ says Viardot ‘It’s the world’s first CO2-free ceramic production line We are currently the only ceramics factory doing this That’s where our thinking began: the kiln already fires all the products in the Gmunden factory today but we started wondering what else it could unlock.’ developed using LAUFEN’s fully electric kiln VOLTA reflects a shared vision for sustainable ceramic production the electric kiln represents more than just a breakthrough in ceramic production – it sets the tone for a design approach that seeks to optimize sustainability at every stage he reimagines the conventional wash basin by introducing a sculpted water path that offers a dynamic and intuitive experience Inspired by the movement of natural streams the design gently guides water through a central channel helping it carry away debris more efficiently The result is a more natural interaction that reduces water consumption and simplifies cleaning water is delivered invisibly and disappears quickly It’s purely functional,’ Behar tells designboom we wanted to create an experience closer to nature The idea of a river or a vortex was in the very first sketches.’ inspired by the movement of natural streams the design guides water through a central channel Transforming the concept of a river into a functional ceramic form was no small feat Both Behar and Viardot faced technical and conceptual challenges as the prototypes began to take shape Without any digital simulation tools to predict the water flow the team had to rely on physical experimentation and observing how the water moved in real-time The sink’s distinctive geometry is made possible by LAUFEN’s Saphirkeramik a high-performance material that enables the precise formation of thin lips and intricate contours pushing the boundaries of what ceramic can do ‘The main challenge was not knowing if it would work,’ recalls Behar ‘There wasn’t any software to simulate this – we had to build real full-size prototypes to see how water would behave Persevering in an unknown direction was the biggest challenge You can always make something “pretty,” but doing something new and functional takes courage and belief That material innovation from Marc and LAUFEN really enabled us to pull this off.’ fine edges and intricate forms are made possible by using Saphirkeramik The collaboration marks more than just the launch of a new product – it signals a broader vision for the future of bathroom design VOLTA is not a standalone object but the beginning of a larger exploration into reducing water consumption and incorporating natural elements into home design Its sculptural form and functional principles have the potential to evolve into a series of products aimed at changing the way we interact with water It’s a fundamental 13th April representing an immersive journey to discover how a project can flow freely like water honoring the essential role of natural elements in shaping our daily spaces the Swiss bathroom company LAUFEN has always been a pioneer in seeking progressive and cutting-edge design solutions the recent inauguration of the world’s first electric tunnel kiln for sanitary ceramic production marks an epochal turning point in the company’s sustainability journey Inaugurated in November 2023 after four years of development at the LAUFEN Gmunden facility in Austria this innovative electric kiln represents a consistent alternative to conventional fossil fuel-dependent production and automated e-kiln is a fundamental milestone in Gmunden’s transition towards the world’s first net-zero sanitary ware facility and plays a central role in the Roca Group’s decarbonization strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045 In response to this revolutionary technology, LAUFEN invited the Founder and CEO of Fuseproject to imagine the first object created using this pioneering process The collaboration with Behar was a natural progression after the installation of the new electric kiln “To see a major industry leader taking a tremendous bold initiative and create the very first kiln of this size powered by solar and green sources of electricity set the basis for a fantastic collaboration” “My favourite saying that I use a lot in my work is that design accelerates the adoption of new ideas The new idea of the electric kiln can be experienced in the way that it takes the force of the sun and turns it into power  While our ceramic designs show us the beauty and motion of water and creates an experience of nature“ The designer, known for his philanthropic initiatives and humanistic approach to projects, has always shown particular interest in the interaction between technology and design quality to ensure a better life and a more sustainable future LAUFEN presents the result of this collaboration: a new concept that revolutionizes the basin’s form with a design that perfectly balances pure aesthetics The project also marks a new chapter in exploring Saphirkeramik LAUFEN’s innovative ultra-thin and highly versatile ceramic material that has transformed our relationship with bathroom design over the years this extraordinary ceramic material revolutionized bathroom design through its unique characteristics of resistance and thinness Marketing and Design Director of Roca Group: “It was a dream come true to create something together that has never been done before paired with LAUFEN’s unique Saphirkeramik technology Since this was Yves’ first project with sanitary ceramic we gave him carte blanche to create an icon Inspired by the first CO2 free production in the world Yves’ approach was very fresh and resulted in an unconventional new concept for the bathroom It feels a bit like we reinvented the wheel – at least the way we relate to the daily use of water.”  LAUFEN’s exhibition at Milan Design Week 2025 follows a conceptual path that allows visitors to discover the innovative processes developed by the company in recent years The journey begins in the courtyard with a scaled reproduction of the electric kiln offering a real image of the Gmunden facility in Austria visitors enter an immersive environment where exhibited products emerge from darkness like actors on a stage The nighttime scenography of the LAUFEN Milano space enhances Yves Behar’s refined designs created in Saphirkeramik – an extraordinary material that unites past and future Yves Behar drew inspiration from water – an element that has played a significant role in his life and has always captivated him sculptural washbasins that beautifully reinterpret its movement The innovative aspect comes from the unusual shape of the basin’s interior which not only creates a sense of movement in its aesthetics but also creates a swirling water motion that perfectly cleans the basin LAUFEN has developed a large hidden drain that reduces the siphon’s dimensions and makes the overall aesthetics more elegant The sustainability values dear to both the brand and the designer are also reflected in the product itself The two-level internal design allows water to flow quickly to the basin’s bottom reducing the need to fill the entire sink and minimizing water consumption This innovative approach makes the project particularly noteworthy from a water-saving perspective The exhibition concludes on the ground floor with a collection of Alape which debuts at the Milan Design Week under the LAUFEN umbrella This final chapter showcases a seamless synthesis of elegance and technological advancement embodied by the latest glazed steel and metallic-surface washbasins: Rivo and Tendo The washbasins are presented together with the new premium ARUN furniture collection creating an ensemble that stands out for high-quality material Beyond demonstrating the seamless compatibility of LAUFEN faucets the newly integrated washplaces combine precision and state-of-the-art technology with timeless elegance in a perfectly balanced symbiosis.  and unique expertise — a electric kiln ‘Volta’ has an innovative circular form With more than 130 years of expertise in perfecting bathroom essentials it’s no surprise that Laufen has a few impressive innovations in store for us this year it has created a CO2-free 100m industrial tunnel kiln powered by solar and green electricity to produce ceramic sanitaryware It's a world first and it highlights the company's continued commitment to sustainability kilns continuously fire products as they move through the tunnel so pieces do not need to be loaded and unloaded as with batch kilns ‘My inspiration for “Volta” comes from water the element that [has] played an important role throughout my life,’ he says ‘I wanted the motion of water to be part of the experience so the water moves in a circular motion like a river.’ Crafted using Laufen’s innovative SaphirKeramik ‘Volta’ features a complex interior and exterior profile that doesn’t increase the overall size of the basin Its unique design is a harmonious blend of form and function making it a standout piece that could become a true icon in bathroom design ‘Yves’ approach was fresh and resulted in an unconventional concept for the bathroom,’ says Marc Viardot marketing and design director of Roca Group ‘It feels like we reinvented the wheel or at least reimagined how we engage with water in our daily lives.’ Volta’s design contrasts the simplicity of the outer form with the functional ‘In addition to creating an aesthetic of movement with the swirling water that cleans the basin perfectly it also allows water to pool at the bottom This makes it ideal for activities like shaving or washing your face without filling the entire sink,’ Béhar adds ‘I wanted “Volta” to express Laufen’s incredible sustainability commitment embodied in the world’s first industrial electric kiln that produces CO2-free ceramics.’ laufen.com escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox Home » Enchanting design at the Kimpton BEM Budapest By bringing to life Matter as both material and concept, Snøhetta illustrates a brand narrative that’s rich in detail and intent The partnership has yielded creative touchpoints at Eurobagno and will next appear at ISH in 2025 expanding Laufen’s vision through Snøhetta’s design expertise this partnership came to life in the Matter installation an exploration of the fundamental materials Laufen LAUFEN headquarters near Basel all images courtesy of LAUFEN and Snøhetta the Norwegian transdisciplinary studio left the exposed concrete that rings around the first and second floor untouched creating a symmetry between all raw materials Snøhetta replaced the once flat flooring with a ramp a gradual uphill to allow for a more accessible entrance once concrete with a semi-reflective finish room LAUFEN hosted a panel talk with Patrick Lüth Roca Group’s Director of Sustainability and Institutional Relations moderated by art historian and curator Michelle Nicol Reflecting on what set the tone of the reimagination during its creation process the managing director of Snøhetta Studio Innsbruck brought up the essence of intuition and how important the aspect of the unconscious was in the design ‘I think it’s important that we work in teams and collaborate with people who have different intuitions due to their cultural background These processes allow us to curate and bring out the more intuitive so that we are not too pragmatic all the time The rationale is important if you talk about the execution but you need people to go into a design process with their heart and their intuition in order to create something meaningful,’ says Patrick Lüth.  pathway leading to the open space in the center of the interior colour-coordinated with the exposed concrete of the curved contrast We also replaced the damaged concrete flooring with terrazzo but kept the concrete walls – they’re beautiful,’ he adds this joint multidisciplinary project was not just about architecture but also about a new way of communicating and understanding the brand universe Snøhetta brings in movable and modular shelves and panels to display the Swiss manufacturer’s bathroom collections The product display on the upper floor is a little more playful: a wealth of LAUFEN products can be found on industrial shelves Visitors can arrange and combine products from various collections on movable racks allowing for interactive exploration and testing of product combinations This hands-on exhibition provides new opportunities to understand and experience the bathroom living space as the bright terrazzo and exposed concrete create an industrial yet welcoming ambiance for this setting a digital space complements the analogue brand world allowing visitors to digitally explore and immerse themselves in the company’s universe Having these multipurposes shelves and panels on the second floor was intentional for Snøhetta ‘We have the colorful booths downstairs that represent each LAUFEN series and create a mood They can take a shower and a toilet and put it together with a wash basin they can bring it over and place it in a setting that they want too,’ Patrick Lüth explains to Laufen team has resulted in the offering of a refined palette of harmonious tones allowing designers to ground spaces in a rich historical context while providing sustainable timeless design solutions that transcend fleeting trends Renowned for his research-based and process-oriented approach Sironi explores eight civilisations from around 3000 B.C From the azure hues of Egypt to the vibrant blues of Mesopotamia and the earthy reds reminiscent of the Roman Empire Sironi’s historical journey reveals a spectrum of colours that have either been created chemically or from natural materials The booth design draws from the ancient ceramics of two specific regions: the blue-green hues of ancient Egyptian ceramics are realised in Egyptian Cerulean while Babylonian Sand delves into the warm tones found in the Tigris and Euphrates Basin presented through the visual medium of The New Classic and Sonar collection Registered in England and Wales with Company Number 06637145 We are using Laufen’s bathroom products The product display on the upper floor meanwhile is a little more playful: a wealth of Laufen products can be found on industrial shelves and visitors can arrange and combine products from various collections on movable racks “It was important to us that the core of the Laufen brand was the focus in the newly designed Laufen Forum,” says Patrick Lüth “The essence of Laufen is represented by the tension between materiality Innovative materials and essential design for the bathroom collection with rigorous yet soft lines Straight and rigorous lines alternate palettes often have the limitation of having a temporal expiration as they are linked to trends I have endeavored to set up the project through deep research developing timeless hues already present referring to a recognizable tone of blue that has been acknowledged throughout history developed by the Egyptians through technological innovation has survived history not only for its chromatic definition but also for its socio-cultural significance,’ says Roberto Sironi each of the 12 colors that make up Color Archaeology is inspired by artefacts from antiquity religious and social ceramics We have worked hard to achieve this goal and the results make me proud I believe that when a project is research-based it creates something with the power to be both seminal and generative The concept is that these colors can also serve as the pivotal point for professionals or individuals in designing the color palette and materials within the bathroom environment,’ concludes Sironi Manager “But it’s surprising how loud a flush can sound in the middle of the night Silent Flush operates by spiralling water through the toilet bowl made possible thanks to the shaping of the inside of the rimless WC which guides water along an optimised path The result is a vortex that cleans the toilet using minimal water The outcome is a collection with a subtly artistic charm and a hint of the fantastical Fantasy is a word that should be living in the design world It’s typically a matter of how designers can do something interesting fantasy is a word that should also be in that range.’ says Marcel Wanders in his conversation with designboom on LAUFEN’s The New Classic collection LAUFEN reunites with Marcel Wanders to reimagine ‘The New Classic’ ceramic washbasins (pattern: Cosmopolitan) Established in 1892, LAUFEN (see here) has ascended in the sanitary ware manufacturing industry by combining material research and strategic design partnerships A significant moment came in 2013 with the introduction of its Saphirkeramik: a material developed by the Swiss company that achieves remarkably thin profiles while maintaining a high degree of durability.  As Marcel Wanders reinvisioned The New Classic collection the Dutch designer embraced the opportunities enabled by this technologically advanced medium On working with the material in The New Classic ‘it’s very special because it seems invisibly innovative As we use Saphirkeramik [in the collection] we are able to do something that looks beautiful LAUFEN has created a niche in sanitary ware manufacturing with its material research and strategic design partnerships (pattern: Cosmopolitan) The New Classic had earned a prestigious iF Design Award for its elegance and form Marcel Wanders focused on the overall meaning and profiles of the pieces the designer has come back to enrich the washbasins with a series of bespoke LAUFEN and I had this idea to not work with colors The result is created with a really intricate technique that allows for a very subtle decorative structure or movement without being overly ambitious… It’s a way to differentiate and create another story,’  says Wanders as he describes the evolution of the washbasins in the 2023 relaunch of the collection Wanders enriches the washbasins with a series of bespoke The washbasins are renewed with three distinctive patterns: Cosmopolitan recurring shadows create a mesmerizing play across their surface visually revealing the sink’s geometric intricacies Cosmopolitan reflects an architectural and sophisticated essence Bohemian takes on a more untamed complexity showcasing swirling elements that narrate a captivating story across the ceramic Ornamental introduces a repetitive series of hexagonal floral-shaped elements that harmonize eclectic and traditional influences.  ‘LAUFEN can now speak to a different audience Or even a little bit more romantic,’ exclaims the designer and Ornamental create a mesmerizing play of shadows across the ceramic surfaces (pattern: Cosmopolitan) This collection’s durability is twofold: there’s the material robustness that comes from its patented Saphirkeramik body and then there’s the longevity that was designed into its form the designer and LAUFEN seek to produce something that can endure the test of time whether that be shifting styles or high-stress environments.  ‘the whole idea of newness is fundamentally challenging I start in the past and bring it to the future to expand the time zone that an object lives in I seek to situate my work between my grandmother and my grandchild I’m trying to make things feel recognizable It brings me back to that good place.”’ the Saphirkeramik body of the sinks are able to achieve durable and elegantly thin profiles (pattern: of a specific brand we always try to keep our industrial and modern character so it’s important for us to talk with the industry first to understand what can be produced instead of design with limitations in mind,’ says Francesco Zorzi the collection consists of vanity units and furnishing accessories It is the first time that LAUFEN experiments with the use of steel in the bathroom like living rooms the series is so abstract that it can be configured in so many different ways I believe this might even lead to new paths for the way bathroom collections are perceived,’ remarks NM3 brought a whole new attitude to austrian ceramics which has received international attention [it brought] artistic design to industrial production that’s why the exhibition was ground-breaking,‘ states rainald franz as he explains ohnsorg’s unique initiative and how LAUFEN supported the symposium by opening up their factories and studios to the artists the austrian museum of applied arts’ exhibition was part of a commercial collaboration with the artist kurt ohnsorg it was held at a time when the profession of a designer did not exist this led to visionaries working together with artists united a leading industry of austrian ceramics together with an internationally renowned artist – and the results are iconic in terms of beauty as well as the movement they started the international initiative, though, still lives on today. lester’s son paul, together with gmundner keramik manufactory and the association for the promotion of european ceramics artists, revived the symposium in 2003. later in 2018, the event began to be held at the LAUFEN manufactory engelhof where artistic perspective of digital ceramic production is explored the ceramics art symposium gmunden creations from the original events and the revival in 2018 in the words of kurt ohnsorg’s manifest ‘the love of handcraft is not to be viewed as a sentimental inclination but rather as the most ideal possibility for people to engage with matter’ the exhibition highlights this philosophy through the history of the sculptures themselves and the intrigue and conversation their displays provoke the The complete bathroom series by designer Toan Nguyen results in a balance of geometry LUA personalizes and adds comfort to the most intimate space in the home.  Toan Nguyen’s LUA collection for LAUFEN photographed in Casa Albero As the modular structure opens up, the LUA collection fills the space with poetic functionality. In over a decade of collaboration with swiss company LAUFEN, Toan Nguyen continues to meet new challenges through a long process of research and development no single piece is more important than the others; each has its own specific role inside the collection Every item has been honed down to the smallest details to offer a balance of shape and usage ‘For me design is above all an approach a close attention to the object applied to the craftsmanship of excellence as well as serial production such as LUA,’ describes Toan.  each item of LUA has been honed down to the smallest details to offer a perfect balance of form and maximum usage flexibility All the pieces in the collection are based on the form of an oval with slightly flexed extremities: a geometric shape that required an extensive series of drawings and studies to obtain a linear result that is both logical and functional at the same time With straight lines and gently rounded corners and edge radii a symbiosis of ceramic elements make up LUA The overall harmony of the bathroom pieces provides the user with helpful features through a visionary impact are available in the most common sizes from hand to double bowl wash basins while they can be wall-hung or placed on countertops thanks to their ground undersides LAUFEN demonstrates further attention to detail by adding drill holes to allow the attachment of a towel rail thus negating the need to go through wall tiles the freestanding bathtub of the LUA collection inside the sphere guest house part of the Casa Albero Along with careful consideration for aesthetic details the WCs also make bathroom planning even more flexible Available in a wall-hung and free-standing version the rimless ceramic pieces feature a rounded bowl and narrow seat a close attention to the object applied to the craftsmanship of excellence as well as serial production such as LUA,’ explains Toan Casa Albero can be read as a result of an architectural composition played out as an arrangement of elements and spaces The minimalism of the faucet series elegantly complements the washbasins beak-shaped curved and narrow handle levers these fittings make the everyday use of the sanitary furniture more practical while being rounded on the underside for a comfortable grip the faucets are also reducing energy consumption as warm water only becomes available if the lever is turned to the left as opposed to the usual central position.  ‘The idea is to offer a final solution to the user but for this project it felt even more significant We really paid close attention to the details like the radius that the specific ceramic could allow in order to achieve the optimal water flow,’ remarks Toan the modularity of the project and the relationship between form and function of Casa Albero the purity and precision of the geometric lines that derive from a long research and experimentation on the matter ‘we really paid close attention to the details like the radius that the specific ceramic could allow in order to achieve the correct water flow,’ remarks Toan LUA’s compact bathtub can still offer a comfortable relaxing shower thanks to the large even floor space and the highly anti-slip material In a free-standing and a wall-mounted version the furniture piece is also ideal for two people at once as the ergonomically shaped depressions are placed at each end while the outlet is positioned in the middle.  ‘I wanted to create a form that is like a part of our collective memory sometimes there is a tendency to exaggerate to make the product different,’ claims Toan.  ‘I wanted to create a form that is like a part of our collective memory,’ explains Toan referring to LUA’s shape LANI matches the design language of the classic ceramic lines The bathroom furniture set is characterized by its slim side panels and recessed doors with indented handles as well as the soft-close doors and drawers Glass shelves inside the cupboards and practical launches a virtual space that aims to mold the two together ‘LAUFEN virtual space’ is an immersive experience where you can explore the company’s bathroom products in four colorful the idea behind the project is to provide a more human interaction than typical online platforms, which have both been propelled in popularity as well as into ubiquity due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic the virtual space is designed to tell a story and take people on a journey through different scenarios and products the experience aims to create the feeling as if strolling through a physical LAUFEN booth at industry events of the past blurring the boundaries between physical and digital, the LAUFEN virtual space was conceived by swiss architects gabrielle hächler and andreas fuhrimann, who have previously worked with the brand to create LAUFEN booths for many global events including salone del mobile 2018 the creative duo use architectural spaces for storytelling enhancing this expertise to build immersive interactive and highly experiential spaces virtually the architects teamed up with annabelle schneider a swiss-born and new york-based experiential interior designer to bring the rooms to life with further visuals and narratives sound designer carlo peters then developed the soundscape for each virtual environment which LAUFEN describes as ‘a platform of hope and reflection’ the collage before entering the room features industrial elements the room itself seems open to the elements as if it’s been abandoned; fluffy clouds of smoke occupy the scene and a puddle of water reflects the surroundings the sound created for this space is otherworldly and even a little bit dystopic next up is the escape from abandoned city life to the desert and what sounds like a banjo starts to play even a frog comes to say hello at the end.  visitors to LAUFEN virtual space will next find themselves immersed in a mysterious forest the hoots of an owl and rustling leaves underfoot make you feel as if you’re the one wandering through the woods layers of code bring a technological element while orange and mustard-hued LAUFEN pieces create a welcome color contrast.  and it collection: the new classic designer: marcel wanders studio as the classic archetypes are reinterpreted with even more fluid and soft lines obtaining an elevated sculptural character.  ILBAGNOALESSI is the result of collaboration between the Alessi Italian design factory and the Swiss bath furnishings specialist LAUFEN LAUFEN‘s iconic ILBAGNOALESSI collection returns in a completely renewed look the result of the evolution of materials and continuous technological research For 2022 collection is enriched with new linguistic codes introducing the principle of the Frame – the modular lighting system enclosing a number of settings of the ceramic fixtures The Swiss company’s revolutionary ceramic manufacturing advanced technology and lighter forms lead the project into a new phase ILBAGNOALESSI has developed a completely new approach to the design of the bathroom space made possible thanks to the interaction of the two companies ILBAGNOALESSI has developed a new approach to the design of the bathroom space Thanks to LAUFEN’s ongoing research on ceramics the extremely strong and malleable material Saphirkeramik has been created Its thin nature permits the formation of daring lines that were not possible 20 years ago; the high-performance material links past with future experimenting with this special ceramic material has designed basins with rounded edges in different sizes reinterpreting washbasins and washstands with long accentuated through the use of a new light and slim profile ‘The introduction of Saphirkeramik has made it possible to reduce the traditional double border of ceramic fixtures to a single thin surface emphasizing the elegance of the organic design of this line of products,’ says the designer of ILBAGNOALESSI LAUFEN finds maximum expression in the balance between form and function The important feature of the collection involves three variations of finish and color for all the ceramic pieces The matte finish – in the colors white black and coffee – gives the product a more contemporary image while the freestanding welcoming bathtub takes its cue from the form of the washbasins a mineral composite that offers a velvety sensual surface the tub is ideal for a long relaxing soak as the slim border widens to offer a comfortable headrest and a surface for objects The 2022 version – also available with black on the outside and white on the inside – is of great theatrical impact and in tune with the revised finishes of the collection.  One of the central pieces is the toilet: its rounded cover completes the design of the ceramic body in seamless continuity generating a unified object that is completely different from a traditional toilet the important feature of the collection involves three variations of finish and color for all the ceramic pieces ILBAGNOALESSI 2022 also offers a series of furnishings that incorporate materials of the latest generation have borders at a 45° angle – a solution that works both aesthetically and functionally earthy tones of the colored laminated versions play with the stoneware surfaces creating chromatic effects and refined material contrasts in relation to the ceramic fixtures For even more versatility and personalization the color palette offers a range of over 30 hues and 3 special nuances ‘When I began to think about the ceramic fixtures of ILBAGNOALESSI in the early 2000s I was immediately drawn to the image of white stones polished by water washbasin) was usually based on the composition of three elements: a basin the central element that contains the water; an element for connection to the wall and possibly another one for connection to the floor With the ceramic fixtures of ILBAGNOALESSI I went beyond traditional design practice taking a stone and directly attaching it to the wall,’ continues the designer the new Frame element is equipped with an LED system the different scenarios of which can be controlled via APP or remote control is the frame structure made of black aluminum which accompanies the mirror and furniture as a connecting element and sets the scene for the unusual shapes This element is equipped with an LED system The modular lighting system allows the brightness to spread in multiple directions creating different personalized configurations in the bathroom space with the option of shifting between warm and cool luminous hues With this easy-to-install concealed technology LAUFEN puts ILBAGNOALESSI into a digital era the bathroom collection made its debut at Fuorisalone 2022 in Milan at LAUFEN Space Milano which hosted an installation staged by Studio Lys inspired by the work of the visionary French architect Claude Parent name: ILBAGNOALESSI  designer: Stefano Giovannoni 144 double washbasins and 142 de meuron see designboom’s instagram coverage @milan.design.week the original washstands highlighted new design opportunities and in the years since from ‘floating’ to floor-standing washbasins and WCs when designing the LAUFEN sonar collection patricia urquiola was inspired by the rigor of architectural minimalism and the dynamism of sound waves specifically in water with a three-dimensional texture then sculpting the external surfaces the interior surfaces are incredibly clean and smooth in contrast conveying an image of balance and elegance overall the beautiful forms are made possible by the brand’s innovative saphirkeramik material it rewrites the rulebook and opens new possibilities in terms of aesthetics the ceramic can create radius rims of between only 2-3mm rather than the conventional 7mm even double washbasins made from saphirkeramik can fit in small urban bathrooms that had previously just managed to fit a standard basin this quality is delivered without adversely affecting either the bowl’s capacity or bathroom layout the exploration of saphirkeramik has led to further creations in the sonar line these include a floor-standing washbasin that conceals all the plumbing within a small footprint as well as free-standing washbasin which extends the magic of collection as if they were floating with gently sloping bases that channel water into transverse recesses bowls and bathtub are now accompanied by a new 600mm-wide washbasin and additional compact 100mm-wide double bowl washbasins – either as wall-mounted or countertop variants these can be paired with geometrically-designed vanity units that not only support but highlight the unique shape of washbasins they are coated in an elegant range of metallic finishes – gold copper and titanium – as well as a nero marquina finish sonar also now includes a new oval free-standing bathtub made of marbond material its slender exterior is finished with the distinctive sound wave texture this round dish seemingly balances yet actually simply attaches to the piece’s rim to serve as a platform for body care essentials there is also a head and back rest to further enhance comfort in the tub sonar adds both floor-standing and wall-hung WCs to the collection they share the distinctive D-shaped form of the other sanitary ware pieces the designs are tapered to the front to evoke a visual lightness to the pieces brand: LAUFEN collection: sonar the 2021 collection speaks of a contemporary ambience further enhanced by a variety of finishes washstands and bathtubs all becomes complete with the inclusion of décor elements mirrors and more furnishing features that give endless possibilities of composition this versatility is pictured by fashion photographer hugo comte and still-life photographer oliver helbig capture the multi-faceted character of the designs hugo comte captures the pieces in playful for their extended family, LAUFEN and kartell decide to give two completely different visual interpretations: one by the belgian fashion photographer hugo comte who has captured dreamy atmospheres for world renowned designers like burberry fendi and many more; the other by the german still-life photographer oliver helbig whose work blurs the boundaries between nature comte decomposes the pieces and creates a playful and improvised scene; where helbig plays with light and color to feature abstraction and form both visions show the designs in an ever-shifting the fashion photographer studies the designs in relation to people and their movement images by hugo comte kartell by LAUFEN creates a range of relationships one being the juxtaposition between the ceramic sanitaryware and the plastic furniture and accessory components this relationship is emphasized by the fresh hues of mustard yellow olive green and powder blue of the plastic and the glossy or matte finishes of the ceramics in white the contrast continues with the transparent elements like the boxy toothbrush holder and the sound rack shelving system adding lightness to the solidness of the ceramic each furniture piece within the collection can be arranged and combined in various ways signifying the fluidity of the space thus allowing greater design freedom.  the bathroom fixtures add their own softening touch to the ample ceramic surfaces where their minimal and slim curves highlight the linearity of the concept and create a serene environment for well-being this attention to detail is important to the collection as faucets and mixers offer even more choice to the overall design they are available in brushed stainless steel and chromium-plated finishes and regarding installation the collection’s wide range of products offers an eclectic mix that stimulates new interior ideas rich with personalization kartell by LAUFEN succeeds in giving added value to the bathroom as space which can then evolve as people’s needs do too from the complementary accessories like the all saints mirror to the ceramic fixtures that can be either wall-mounted or freestanding it is possible to adapt the bathroom collection to spaces of different sizes and styles as each product is compact yet adjustable brands: LAUFEN and kartell collection: kartell by LAUFEN photographers: hugo comte and oliver helbig the design takes visitors through the brand’s 127 years of history and then onward towards the future this will be with a focus on using the materials from the industrial ceramic production and connecting the experience with two precise points: the original (the material) and the arrival point (the finished product) the clay mountain (left) beside the stacked three-dimensional installation all images courtesy of LAUFEN as visitors enter the installation at the teatro arsenale inside the 5vie district, they will witness a mountain of clay laying beside the installation. the raw material – water and kaolin – forms not only the basis of snarkitecture‘s design but also of LAUFEN itself from clay to ceramic, the various stages of production are captured as the brand expertly transforms clay into unique in the form of a precisely stacked sequence of washbasins which also exemplifies the concept of mass-manufacturing brand: LAUFEN collaborators: snarkitecture aims to upend how we process human waste and heal the environment in the process non-mechanical apparatus that performs the separation without the user even knowing it The journey to create the Save! toilet began in 2011, when EOOS joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s “Reinvented Toilet Challenge,” which sought to address global sanitation crises with sustainable solutions EOOS managing partner Harald Gruendl saw a major opening for design to make a positive social and environmental impact “Everyone speaks about circularity and the circular economy,” he tells Metropolis “Recycling nutrients is the most basic form of circularity there is.” (The Teapot Effect is so named because when tea is poured slowly the liquid tends to dribble down the spout but a fast pour forms an arcing stream.) The only catch is that all urine must first hit the pan—meaning men must always sit down to use the toilet where it played into the show’s theme of “Broken Nature.” “Once you have a product you need an application,” says Gruendl who explains that urine separation must be widely implemented at a system-wide level to be truly effective Cities would have to install separate infrastructure to collect and treat urine; a more likely short-term scenario is that buildings would collect and store the urine until a tanker truck picks it up having an effective and simple solution to kickstart the discussion is essential “[Bjarke Ingels Group partner] Kai-Uwe Bergmann was one of the first architects I told about this technology,” says Viardot “It didn’t take too long for him to be enthusiastic about it and see how we could implement the Save toilet.” (BIG’s New York office hosted an event showcasing the design this past May.) Both Viardot and Gruendl are hopeful that cutting-edge design firms like BIG and environmentally-minded consumers will be the toilet’s early adopters You may also enjoy “This Minimalist Public Pool Creates Its Own Water-Filtering Ecosystem.” Would you like to comment on this article?
