Recently published figures from the canton’s statistics office (OCSTAT)
show that Geneva continues to be Switzerland’s most international region
and a ‘melting pot’ of various nationalities
With 220,024 foreign residents (out of the total of 639,000 people who lived in Geneva at the end of 2024)
non-Swiss represent over 41 percent of the canton’s population
the real number is even higher — that’s because dual nationals (of Switzerland and another country) are not counted in the statistics because they are considered Swiss
but six municipalities within the canton exceed this average: Pregny-Chambésy (49.9 percent)
Where do most of Geneva’s foreigners come from
The majority (58 percent) are from the EU or EFTA (Norway
while 13 percent are from other European countries — mainly Kosovo
With a cumulative total of 70,000 nationals
the French and Portuguese citizens constitute the majority of Geneva’s foreign population
ahead of Italians (20,890) and Spaniards (16,680)
(Note that these numbers include only those who live in Switzerland
and not the over 112,000 cross-worker commuters from France who come to work in Geneva each day)
Why do so many foreign nationals settle in Geneva
The presence of the United Nations is a big factor, as its 40 organisations employ tens of thousands of people — most of them from abroad. (However, this is about to change, as the Trump administration is withdrawing a number of US diplomats from Geneva)
so many foreigners work in the local international finance sector
And it is an important science hub as well
with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) attracting hundreds of foreign specialists

the churches are on a pilgrimage toward unity.

Occasionally one can hear the wood as it shrinks or swells
One is not cut off from the outside world inside the chapel
The wooden oak panels on the glass windows filter the light but also allow the outside world to be seen
reflected former WCC general secretary Most Rev
“The ecumenical pilgrimage has many steps,” he said. “This ecumenical chapel and the great hall next to it represent my best memories from the ecumenical fellowship and some of the most blessed moments of my life.”
Tveit added: “The move now is into the next and necessary phase of renovations

a fact noted in an especially descriptive way by Rev
who most recently worked in the press office of the WCC 11th Assembly. “Over the years
our idea of what is ecumenical and what is a a prayer space for everybody has changed,” she said
there are far more gifts and images in the chapel than when it was first built
Stranz poses a key question about the chapel: “How do we live with this idea of an ecumenical prayer space being a place where we can all feel at home—but where we can all feel the challenge as well?” she asked.
One way the chapel makes people feel at home is that they are led into the space by walking across “waves” in the marble floor
The feel of the natural world also draws people together: the abstract stained glass windows show the rising and the setting of the sun around the world – the whole inhabited earth
And the chapel “breathes" through its wood panelling
sparking many people to comment what the sound means to them.

As WCC director of Communication Marianne Ejdersten described: “The walls are whispering.” She added “I take always a moment to pray in the chapel and thinking of all the churches worldwide praying and working together for unity
The music coming from the chapel was the first thing that caught the attention of Beth Ferris
who arrived at the Ecumenical Centre in 1985
ready to take up her new position as study and interpretation secretary for work related to the Refugee Service.
“The music that was different from the US hymns I was used to,” she said. “I poked my head in and realized people were singing in a language that was strange to me. ‘Wow,’ I thought, ‘this is going to be a different working environment than I’ve been used to.’ And of course
that initial impression turned out to be right.”
who worked at the WCC from 1996-2008 as the WCC executive secretary for Education
the chapel was a physical symbol that the WCC is more than just another international organisation serving global networks. “Whatever else I did as a staff member

“Worshipping and praying together in the beautiful chapel

it felt like the heart of the Ecumenical Centre

After nearly 60 years in Geneva’s Ecumenical Center
The new Communion Office is located on the Octagon campus
which will bring staff from all departments closer together
(LWI) – The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has relocated its head offices from the Ecumenical Center to a new address: the Octagon campus in Geneva
until a new Ecumenical Center has been built on the plot which has housed the LWF Communion Office since 1964
The old offices which were on the World Council of Churches (WCC) premises in Grand Saconnex will be torn down to make room for the new buildings
The parts of the Ecumenical center which are under national heritage
Dr Anne Burghardt said that as staff look forward to the new beginnings
the connection to the Ecumenical Center and what it stands for remains strong
“Closing old doors also means opening new ones; changing space and work habits can help us to gain new insights and new perspectives,” she said.
The new 700-square meter offices on the Octagon campus in Grand Saconnex are in a modern office building
Other tenants include non-governmental organizations and diplomatic missions
One of the Ecumenical sister organizations
is also moving to the Octagon campus.
Several factors were considered to ensure a good working environment that facilitates collaborative working and staff well-being
There are diverse working areas within the office
and shared working spaces in the office are named after the 13 cities that have hosted LWF Assemblies between 1947 and 2023
the new Communion Office will help us show the history of the LWF
Photographs and artworks will help share the story of the global communion and the difference it has made for people and churches across the world,” added General Secretary Burghardt
“We were looking for a similar office to serve our needs that would also complement the hybrid in-person and online working models that have become standard after the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mr Szabolcs Lörincz
LWF Director for Planning and Coordination
“We worked with experts throughout the whole process to design a modern
efficient workspace that minimizes unused office spaces and nurtures strong collaboration
The Octagon campus also has attractive open areas
The building is equipped with solar panels
Closing old doors also means opening new ones; changing space and work habits can help us to gain new insights and new perspectives
The Ecumenical Center will always remain an important part of our identity
Speaking at a farewell prayer service in the Ecumenical Center chapel on 12 March
General Secretary Burghardt recalled the many fond memories associated with the former offices
and LWF’s commitment to its ecumenical partners
including the WCC and other organizations that will also vacate their offices
This is the first time since their foundation that the LWF and WCC will not share the same physical space
their offices were in Geneva’s Eaux Vives area
the ecumenical commitment of the LWF remains unwavering,” Burghardt emphasized
WCC and other ecumenical organizations will be located in separate buildings
“But this should encourage us to be even more intentional in scheduling regular meetings with colleagues
not only in the WCC but also with those from other ecumenical organizations with whom we have shared this space in the Ecumenical Center
We remain strongly connected in our joint journey and shared mission,” she said
“Even as the old Ecumenical Center is being closed and then rebuilt
it will always remain an important part of our identity
It resides in our hearts and in the identity of the LWF
Burghardt referred to the theological work that has been produced at the center
and "historical decisions that literally changed the lives of many churches and their members for the better.”
The LWF General Secretary invited prayers for the upcoming construction plans and expressed hope that the rebuilt center will “always be a place of welcome to people from across the world and a visible sign of our search for Christian unity.”

Green Village has become the first Geneva development project to qualify for the One Planet Living label
The formal action plan covers ten principles representing a serious undertaking from the landowner
the “Association Suisse Pour Des Quartiers One Planet Living”
Implenia is also the developer of the Green Village project
The Green Village project includes administrative buildings
Located in the heart of Geneva's international district
- Reduce CO2 emissions and gradually abandon fossil fuels
with buildings powered by renewable energy
- Improve the quality of life and well-being of the community
On the decision to apply OPL standards in Green Village
the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC)
said: ‘The World Council of Churches is committed to protecting the environment locally and internationally alongside all its member churches
By applying the standards of One Planet Living to our Green Village property development
we are fulfilling our undertaking to fight global warming right where we live and work each day.’
Green Village will provide six new buildings in the municipality of Le Grand-Saconnex
The development includes administrative buildings
designed for international organisations and service-sector firms
A hotel and a residential building are also planned
Green Village will be set in a landscaped park at the heart of Geneva’s international district
Each Green Village building will symbolically bear the name of a key international treaty in sustainable development: Kyoto
with the Kyoto building (administrative) and the Montreal development (residential) should be completed by the end of 2022 or the start of 2023
The constructions will respect all standards set by the OPL label
with priority given to construction materials from the local economy
and to recycled materials from the existing structures
The buildings will be powered by renewable energy
through photovoltaic solar panels and networked energy
The goal of zero waste will be reached via an on-site eco-centre and through the policy of waste reuse put forward by the Le Grand-Saconnex municipality
‘Sustainability is one of the five values by which we align our actions
We are proud that with the Green Village project and the OPL standards developed together with WWF Switzerland we make a big and important step towards a future worth living for all.’ says Adrian Wyss

The exhibition “Bethlehem Reborn” tells a story that goes beyond the history of politics and art to reveal
through the restoration works of the Church of the Nativity
an overdue recognition of the outstanding universal value of Palestinian heritage to humanity
This exhibition gives an impression of the wonder this unique church is: An invitation to visit Palestine
admire the beauty of the basilica and the holy city of Bethlehem as well as an inspiration to work together for unity
Following unprecedented renovations that lasted almost ten years
the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem has been restored to its original beauty
A symbol of humanity has been given back to the faithful all over the world and to today’s pilgrims who follow in the footsteps of the women and men who over the centuries have venerated the birthplace of Jesus
Through the discoveries of new archaeological excavations and complex restoration works
this exhibition tells the story of renewed devotion – from the time of the first Christians who venerated a simple grotto to the age of the Byzantine emperors who built one of the most magnificent basilicas of antiquity that later on was fortified and lavishly decorated by the knights who founded the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem
By documenting restoration work and archaeological excavations
the exhibition constructs a broader and deeper story that embraces the entire space of the basilica from the system of grottos to the roof
showing its development from the oldest periods up to the present day
the exhibition uses the nearly completed restoration project as a thread that stitches together the even greater history of the oldest monument in Christendom

There are no exhaustive explanations to this change
yet the phenomenon can be approached by looking at the prevention work undertaken throughout the last 30 years
While conflicts without religious incompatibility have been addressed through active preventative methods and tools
the lack of understanding and suitable preventive measures concerning the challenges that conflicts with religious incompatibilities face

Geneva’s biggest concert venue, the Arena is where you go for big name gigs and large-scale entertainment and sporting events. So a season’s programming could include Elton John, Simply Red and Johnny Halliday (well, it does border France), along with musical Dirty Dancing and basketball stars the Harlem Globetrotters. Located next to Geneva airport, it’s easy to get to and draws punters from both France and Switzerland.
