Gaming systems and casino equipment provider SYNOT has announced its debut in the Swiss market with the installation of its products at Casino Admiral Mendrisio.
The first installation included a set of Eclipse FL-32 cabinets with the latest version of the Firebird Red gaming system. This version offers a range of original games including 6 Hold & Respin titles and over 40 classic games.
Shortly after the successful first installation, the company also launched Firebird slots at the St. Gallen Casino, and it expects further installations in two other casinos in the coming weeks.
Miroslav Valenta Jr, Sales Director of the SYNOT Group, said: "The Swiss market is one of the most lucrative casino markets in Europe and therefore we consider this launch a great success. The market is highly regulated and competitive.
"In addition, operating gaming equipment in this country requires GLI-11 certification, including the appropriate certification transfer for the Swiss market. Of course, our company meets all these requirements."
SYNOT already operates online slots in the Swiss market in cooperation with several operators. Now, these games will also be available in land-based casinos, specifically in the Firebird Red gaming system, continuing the company's omni-channel strategy, which includes both online and land-based sectors.
Thomas Steuer, Sales Director of E-Systems, stated: "After positive feedback from German casinos throughout the past years, it soon became our combined goal to also enter the competitive Swiss market, which we have successfully achieved now. Many thanks go to our long-term partner Casinò Admiral Mendrisio, who acted quickly and therefore was able to celebrate the debut of SYNOT’s great cabinets & games in all of Switzerland.
"We’re looking forward to many more launches in other Swiss casinos in the near future and we’re confident that SYNOT will become an inherent part of the Swiss market product mix.“

The Holy Week processions take place in the historic town of Mendrisio on the evenings of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday
the city’s lights are turned off and the streets are lit by the glow of ‘transparencies’: translucent paintings mounted on wooden frames and illuminated from within
made using a specific painting technique developed since the late 18th century
the 260 transparencies depict biblical scenes and symbols
The Thursday procession is devoted to staging the Passion and the Stations of the Cross and involves around 270 extras
The sounds of trumpets and drums set the pace and fill the streets with a contemplative atmosphere
The Good Friday procession is more austere: hundreds of children and adults march along carrying over 500 ceremonial objects
including 320 lanterns representing symbols of the Passion of Christ
The choreography and scenography of the processions foster a contemplative atmosphere
and the transparencies promote local craftsmanship
Hundreds of men and women volunteer to organize the practice
and a significant portion of the population supports it by attending the processions
The Fondazione Processioni Storiche di Mendrisio is committed to preparing and organizing the Processions with wide community participation and ensures the transmission of related knowledge by its members and beyond

It’s been quite a few years, but Eddy Merckx Bikes are back
and even all-road & gravel options in steel
these are the most accessible Merckx bikes yet
all of the new carbon bikes are available in a new limited Eddy Merckx Retrosonic edition with styling inspired by a classic 1980s Merckx Panasonic team bike
The newly updated 2024 Eddy Merckx Bikes range is a mix of newly refined bikes and some carry over models that we’ve seen evolves over the years
Merckx carries over the same carbon 525 road race bike
One we’ve been keeping tabs on since it re-entered the race scene four and a half years ago
And still promises a balance of race-ready geometry and ultimate stiffness from the ultra-hi-mod carbon frame
A somewhat new road addition is the Merckx Mendrisio
focused more on longer endurance road rides
The Mendrisio has almost exactly the same 525 geometry
But it opts for a more compliant hi-mod carbon layup
and the option for 1-piece or conventional cockpits
Merckx calls this new Pévèle their in-between bike
where you can use their online customization tool to build it more as road or gravel
the long-running Strasbourg gravel bike gets a ground up overhaul to make it a modern gravel machine
The Strasbourg borders on mountain bike territory
And you can even set it up with a gravel suspension fork
Its geometry is again more relaxed than the road race bikes with a lower center of gravity
But the Strasbourg retains a relatively steep head angle and low frame Stack for a quick handling ride quality
it also gets all of the adventure-ready bikepacking mounts & for fenders
Merckx have a new limited edition paint scheme dubbed Retrosonic
Developed as a “tribute to the legendary Panasonic cycling team that rode Eddy Merckx bikes in the 1980s“
the retro blue paintjob will be available on all of the 4 new carbon bikes
The limited edition Eddy Merckx Retrosonic finish will be available starting February 24th to coincide with the start of the spring’s cobblestone classics
it already became clear that a ‘truthful interpretation’ would work very well
because the frame of our carbon bikes is simply different from the steel from the original Corsa road bike
Beyond the current range of the four bikes above, there is also still the carry-over custom Merckx Corsa for road or gravel in titanium
you just have to get in touch to figure out what you need
Eddy Merckx Bikes says they will introduce 3 all-new bikes this coming year
“There will be sporty e-bikes and an addition in the performance segment
The cooperation with the UCI ProTour Team Flanders – Baloise will also be further anchored.” We’ll keep our eyes open to see what all that will entail
All of the revamped Eddy Merckx Bikes are available as separate framesets or customizable complete bikes
The top-tier 525 road frameset sells for 3500€
with complete customized Shimano 105 Di2 builds from 5000€
The Mendrisio frame is much more affordable at 2000€
The all-road Pévèle brings it back up to 3000€ for a carbon frameset
While the carbon gravel Strasbourg starts at 2500€ for a frameset
and Rival 1×11 mechanical builds from just 3000€
if the Merckx site numbers add up correctly
Both the Pévèle & Strasbourg are also offered in aluminum & steel framesets
That unquestionably helps lower the complete bike cost of entry as low as 1800€ with SRAM Apex 1×11
All of the Merckx bikes are meant to be customized & ordered online
then delivered to your local bike shop for pick-up
That means you can adjust color or even semi-custom paint jobs to your liking
plus dial in fit with options like component sizing and cockpit style
Eddy Merckx Bikes offers the custom paint schemes at no additional cost in 2024
So there’s no reason not to get a one-of-a-kind Merckx bike
built-to-order in Belgium by the Belgian Cycling Factory next to Ridleys
Therefore expect a bit of time from bike order to pick-up

but the way brands price framesets is super annoying
How can there be only a 300 Euro difference between a frameset and a full build
Those seatstays are buzzkill in more ways than one
– Full disclosure- rimmer post (runs for cover)
that’s putting it on a slippery slope towards actually having a modern bike and that way lies cables inside headsets and frames that look ugly as sin because someone thinks we all need to save 5W at 40kph… No thanks
I’d rather have it hidden and gain 5w of drag if that was the only way to get internal housing

Eddy Merckx Bikes has announced it will restart production after a three-year
pandemic-enforced hiatus in which the brand virtually vanished from view
The 2024 range includes the existing 525 race bike
and all-new Strasbourg gravel bike and Pévèle all-road bike.
Eddy Merckx Bikes will also offer a custom-built option
the retro-inspired Corsa in titanium or steel.
the bikes will only be available in the UK and Europe

says the bikes are designed and built in Belgium.
an integrated cockpit and aggressive geometry
the brand says the “fast and feisty” 525 is designed to be at home in the cobbled and windy Belgian classics.
including the distinctive S-shaped seatstays for seated comfort
But now consumers will be able to buy a complete bike from €5,649 for a build with Shimano 105 Di2 R7100 and Forza Levanto db carbon wheels
The Mendrisio is named after the Swiss town where Merckx won his second world championship in 1971
performance-focused but comfortable” endurance road bike has a similar form factor to the 525’s drag-reducing profile
It also uses a round seatpost instead of the aero-profiled one seen on the 525
Like the 525, the Mendrisio is only available in carbon and starts from €2,699 for a build with 12-speed, mechanical Shimano 105 and Forza Norte db aluminium wheels. The frameset costs €1,999
The Pévèle is a brand new all-road bike intended for long road rides and fast gravel rides
Available in aluminium, steel or carbon form, the frame has clearance for up to 42mm-wide tyres and has multiple mount points for accessories. It’s also compatible with internal cable routing for dynamo lights.
Named after the Mons-en-Pévèle cobbled secteur from Paris-Roubaix
The alloy model starts the range at €1,828
The carbon model is priced from €3,299.
The Strasbourg is the brand’s new gravel bike and also comes in steel
Made for “extremely challenging terrain”, the Strasbourg has a maximum tyre clearance of 45mm when set up with a 1x drivetrain and is compatible with suspension forks.
Strasbourg is where Merckx outsprinted great foe Roger de Vlaeminck on a dirt track to win a stage of the 1971 Tour de France
However, this bike is more geared towards bikepacking than gravel racing.
The frame is dotted with mounting points for bikepacking bags
The brand claims its low centre of gravity provides stability on rough ground.
Available from €1,799 in aluminium or €2,149 in steel
prices start from €2,999 for the carbon version.
in steel or titanium and in standard sizes
Despite its classic round tube shapes, Eddy Merckx Bikes says the Corsa’s tapered head tube makes it compatible with fully integrated cable routing
The frameset can accommodate mechanical or electronic groupsets and has clearance for 30
Prices for the non-custom frames start at €1,995 for steel and €3,490 for titanium
Eddy ‘The Cannibal’ Merckx sold his bike brand in 2008 and Belgian Cycling Factory
The AG2R La Mondiale (now Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) WorldTour team rode Eddy Merckx bikes until the end of the 2020 WorldTour season. Back then, the team chose from a rim-brake and disc-brake 525 race bike.
Eddy Merckx Bikes ceased production at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic
causing a lack of availability for consumers
Its bikes didn’t disappear completely from the highest level
Team Flanders – Baloise continued to ride Eddy Merckx models at UCI WorldTeam level and as wildcard entries to spring classics such as Paris-Roubaix.
Eddy Merckx Bikes says it updated and expanded its range for its 2024 return to mass production.

will remain on view at the Auditorium of Teatro dell’architettura Mendrisio until October 22
each of which are placed in locales characterised by different topographies
Tiantian held a public lecture delineating the evolution of her work as an architect
while also describing the contexts of the locales she works in
The architect is also set to begin her collaboration with the Università della Svizzera italiana as a Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio
The jury for this year’s Swiss Architectural Award (SAA) was chaired by Mario Botta
and comprised the likes of Walter Angonese
winner of the seventh SAA edition with the Paris-based studio Bruther; Dieter Dietz
Director of the Section d’Architecture
located in the Songyang and Jinyun counties
are balanced designs that take into consideration the need for meaningful spaces in these locales
Tiantian’s designs are respectful of the unadulterated landscapes they are placed on
they are built to revive these scantly populated locales
in order to hear her point of view about her win
and know more about her practice and future plans
Almas Sadique: Tell us about your first reaction upon hearing the announcement of your win
Almas: What are some of your goals and expectations regarding your upcoming role as a Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio
Xu: I am very honoured to be the first Chinese visiting professor at the Academy in Mendrisio, so I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the culture and heritage, at the same time how modern architecture can become an effective solution to integrate and revive heritage in rural context
Almas: How was your experience of being a major part of the exhibition at Auditorium of Teatro dell’architettura Mendrisio
Xu: Every candidate has a strong portfolio
Collectively the exhibition represents the architectural practice and thinking of a new generation
Almas: If there is one piece of advice that you would like to share (with younger architects) after all your years of experience
What are some differences in the way you approached your first project versus your most recent one
Xu: Our rural experience didn’t establish from the day one
It took years of communication and engagement with rural communities
It’s also a process building up our knowledge and experience
Almas: What are some of your childhood experiences and exposure as an architecture student that inform your architectural practice
Xu: I would say the childhood experience growing up in the family house
The integration with its ecological surroundings
creates layers of courtyards and seemly endless space
Almas: Could you tell us about some of the common challenges you face while developing your projects
Quarry or Tulou was an entire new subject for us
In the beginning every theme is unknown and challenging
Almas: What is one project that you hold close to your heart
and one that you feel could have been done differently
through intense labour work for living and surviving
and the surgical incision and extraction with indigenous knowledge
manually created the quarry as spectacular architecture
Our role is rather to facilitate with necessity
Almas: Can you tell us about some contemporary phenomena in the Chinese architectural landscape that you would like to improve
Xu: Iconic architecture is still very popular
It tends to over design which becomes another way of decoration
Xu: Our current project is on a small island called Meizhou island
Instead of working on a large-scale iconic museum
we proposed to break it down to smaller cultural facilities scattering on the island with different village communities
The program of these smaller buildings is based on the very specific living and ecology on island: mangrove research and cultivation
wastewater filtration for vegetable farm irrigation
We started from learning marine ecology and island living from the beginning
instead we are working on designing a specific ecosystem.
The Swiss Architectural Award 2022 exhibition is on display at the Auditorium of Teatro dell’architettura Mendrisio from May 5 to October 22
Almas forayed into writing to fulfil her nascent aspiration of exploring latent tales and forging immersive narratives

allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in his artistic world
From his first drawings in the 1950s to his last works in aeronautical aluminum
the exhibition aims to offer a complete and in-depth view of Castellani’s artistic practice
Enrico Castellani’s presence on the twentieth-century art scene was not only influential but also extremely charismatic
thanks to his rigorous and constant research around the concepts of space and time
and their unique and innovative representation
Enrico Castellani took an important step in his artistic education by moving to Belgium
after a brief period at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels
he decided to devote himself to architectural studies at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture et des arts décoratifs de La Cambre
he came into contact with the artist Piero Manzoni
resulting in a deep friendship and a prolific artistic partnership
the two founded the magazine “Azimuth” and the almost eponymous gallery “Azimut,” which in just eight months organized as many as thirteen exhibitions
aiming to explore the most innovative artistic trends both in Italy and abroad
Although Castellani’s early works reflect some influence from abstract expressionism
especially Mark Tobey’s sign painting
he developed a distinctive personal artistic style in the late 1950s
enlivened by carefully studied sequences of reliefs and depressions
captured the attention of the European cultural scene
Invited to participate in internationally important exhibitions such as Monochrome Malerei (Leverkusen
Castellani also achieved a consistent presence at the Venice Biennale
he continued to develop his distinctive visual alphabet with determination
becoming a landmark in the international art scene
His works are shown in prestigious exhibitions such as Vitalità del negativo nell’arte italiana 1960/70 (Palazzo delle Esposizioni
L’art en Italie depuis 1959 (Centre Georges Pompidou
His career culminated with the award in 2010 of the Praemium Imperiale for painting
Enrico Castellani passed away in Celleno in 2017
The exhibition organized by the Mendrisio Art Museum in collaboration with the Enrico Castellani Foundation represents the first presentation of his work in a Swiss museum and the first retrospective since his passing
The bilingual (Italian/English) catalog features new reproductions of all the works on display and five essays focusing on specific aspects of Castellani’s work and life
Ester Coen analyzes the beginnings of his career and the Azimut/h experience
Paolo Bolpagni the musical aspects of his compositions
Fulvio Irace reflects on the artist’s relationship with architecture
Federico Sardella offers an overview of his artistic production through a geographical prism
and Barbara Paltenghi Malacrida provides an assessment of the critical reception of his work
The appendix includes a new biographical note and an updated exhibition and bibliographical history
the Mendrisio Museum of Art presents a series of collateral events each year that aim for interaction with other arts such as music and theater
On the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Enrico Castellani
the Museum commissioned the creation of a new musical composition by Italian composer Carlo Boccadoro
one of the most important figures in contemporary music
titled Il muro del tempo (The Wall of Time)
will be performed in the halls of the Mendrisio Museum of Art by drummer Jeff Ballard and timpanist Lorenzo Malacrida in its premiere on April 27
‘scuola universitaria professionale della svizzera italiana’ by kengo kuma and associates

kengo kuma‘s design for a two-phase addition of a mendrisio-based campus to ‘la scuola universitaria professionale della svizzera italiana (SUPSI)’, an institute of higher education for applied sciences in the italian-speaking region of switzerland, has been unveiled. in collaboration with local architects studio d`architettura martino pedrozzi
the proposal seeks to link parts of the city divided by an expansive railway system by overturning the track as a constraint on the architecture
a ‘skywalk’ and large underpass renew the entire circulation of the existing buildings while connecting the university to the city
by keeping access and movement central to the creation of the architecture
the structure becomes a balance of infrastructure and artificial landscape while forging a new typology of an urban building for the region
the campus will act as a catalyst for future urban development by freeing the north side of the site for future projects
sloped in two directions and punctured with subtle gestures of vertical circulation
the building is made up of narrow nodes that extend over the entire extent of the site
while the footprint of the building connects these areas of program with a sequence of open
the main green-covered promenade creates new standards for sustainable practice
while a block-long green wall reinvents the possibilities of urban shade screen
the building envelope is comprised of thin slabs of stone alternating with aluminum panels– its pattern determined by optimal daylight orientation
the technology of the building provides a very high level of thermal insulation
with large windows that provide natural light to the interiors and solar gain during the winter season
a wealth of outdoor spaces is bolstered by a smattering of ample terraces and shelters positioned in the cool shade of the structure
circulation-filled plazas also accommodate the university’s extensive public programming which include an on-campus kindergarten
this mixed demographic carries into the main space; on the ground floor
there are classrooms dedicated to continuing education as well as the main cafeteria
where the large and bright triple height volume looks on to the outdoor covered area in front of the laboratories
The latter glazed space can be completely opened in good weather and animated by the presence of students and professors using the open-air seating

Italian road captain steps up and fights for bronze with 15km solo chase
reviving memories of when she won the world title in Mendrisio in 2009
"This bronze medal is as special and shimmers just as bright my Mendrisio gold medal," Guderzo said happily after the podium ceremony
I hoped and believed that the Italian team could ride well a get a medal but I honestly didn't think I'd be the one to do it."
Guderzo was the road captain and role model for her younger Italian teammates but stepped up to fight for a medal after the tough Innsbruck circuit shook out the peloton and Anna van der Breggen made her 40km solo attack to win by over three minutes
After young teammate Elena Pirrone's chase group was caught
Guderzo attacked on the final climb and gave her all in a 15km time trial to the finish
She finished 5:26 down on Van der Breggen but was 47 seconds ahead of Emilia Fahlin (Sweden) who finished fourth
68 riders failed to finish the tough 155km race
"I think this was a very hard Worlds for everyone," Guderzo said
"I had cramp with two laps to go and honestly thought I'd get dropped and would need to ease up
But I dug deep to hang on to convince my teammates to fight on
I placed myself as well as I could and then saw the Canadian rider attacked and so knew I had to help again by chasing the moves
That lead me to suffer all the way to the finish."
Guderzo finished third in the 2004 world championships in Verona and has always been loyal to the Italian team
helping national coach Dario Savoldi develop a generation of successful female riders who have outshone the Italian men year after year
Guderzo started the season with the Hitec Products team
but switched to the Italian Bepink team in July
and she worked hard to be at her best for Innsbruck
I lost my grandfather and a lot of things stopped me being at my best," she revealed
Italian coach Dino Savoldi knows how much I love being part of the Italian team and how much I love pulling on the Italian Azzurra jersey
"He knows I'm ready to die for the Italian team
He also knows how much I've worked in the last six weeks even if there weren't the results to show it
Today I died time and time again with each kilometre as I fought for the bronze medal but it was worth it."

Opening today in Mendrisio (Switzerland), at the Art Museum, is the major retrospective devoted to André Derain (Chatou, 1880 - Garches, 1954), French artist heir toImpressionism, initiator of Fauve painting and among the fathers of Cubism. The exhibition
Francesco Poli and Barbara Paltenghi Malacrida
thanks to the collaboration of the André Derain Archives and loans from several major French museums
25 designs for costumes and theater scenes
to trace Derain’s multifaceted artistic activity
Derain and Matisse painted seascapes together in the South of France
in Collioure; the two gave birth to the Fauve movement between 1905 and 1910: their paintings were characterized by vivid colors
and the latter held the French artist in high esteem: it was Derain who introduced Picasso to the world of African art and Cubism
while Picasso’s fortunes grew throughout the century
Derain’s suffered a sharp decline after World War II
due in part to art galleries and the market
The initiator of Cubism was Georges Braque
and the latter befriended Derain around 1909
so much so that for several years they painted together in the Parisian Ruche district
Braque greatly appreciated Derain’s primitivism and in turn the latter was inspired by Braque’s modern classicism
Alberto Giacometti also particularly esteemed Derain
especially his ability to change styles by drawing on ancient art
Derain always remained connected to figurative painting
The exhibition catalog documents his production with historical photographs
Some of the artist’s theoretical texts
translated into Italian for the first time
The exhibition will be open to the public until Jan

the Mendrisio Museum of Art is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to A.R
one of the most important German artists of the second half of the twentieth century
together with other painters and fellow artists (Baselitz
Immendorff and Kiefer) was able to express the contradictions of post-Nazi Germany and the East-West conflict through a highly original language albeit conceived in traditional forms of expression
and including more than 40 large-format paintings
and more than seventy works on paper and artist’s books) intends to retrace the main stages of one of the most significant exponents of international art of the 1970s and 1980s
Retrospectives over the past two decades (Frankfurt
Oxford and The Hague) have provided a broad overview of Penckian’s most important production
the Mendrisio Museum of Art aims to present the creative journey of A.R
Penck (for the first time in the Italian-speaking cultural sphere) through his multifaceted expressions
trying to provide the public with the tools to be able to understand the complex and profound structure of this great protagonist of contemporary art.Born in Dresden (his real name was Ralf Winkler)
Penck for decades was active in East Germany with works of clear socialist inspiration
managing to capitalize on conditions then openly hostile to avant-garde art: while socialism denied the modern artist any function
Penck was able to transform over time the function of his own painting into an element in dialogue with the social and political system
It was not until the early 1970s that Penck was able to participate in exhibitions; not in his homeland
In 1972 he exhibited at documenta 5 in Kassel called by Harald Szeemann; in the early 1980s he was among the protagonists of the exhibitions
A New Spirit in painting (London) and Zeitgeist (Berlin)
A paradox of divided Germany is precisely the fact that his work
so strongly linked to the analysis of the socio-political situation
is recognized and appreciated only in the West
after yet another clash with the authorities
Penck is now considered one of the leading figures on the world painting scene and has already attracted great interest even in New York
Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring admire him for his vigorous monumental painting
capable of delineating the complexity of the world with the spontaneity and immediacy of a graffiti artist
In 1984 he was celebrated with a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale; in 1988 the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin consecrated him definitively with a major retrospective
The foundations of his monumental painting date back to the late 1960s
with the birth of the Standart project (still unexplored in all its complexity)
Standart symbolizes the artist’s self-consciousness
in line with Bauhaus ideas: the transformation of modern society according to aesthetic criteria
with which the entire figurative universe of A.R
which is the starting point of the exhibition organized by the Mendrisio Museum of Art
where a large number of his masterpieces will be on view
In addition to presenting large-format paintings
the Mendrisio exhibition highlights for the first time through many artist’s books (displayed on special projectors) the structural coherence of Penck’s work
from sketch to monumental work: a mimesis of nature
His scientific training (from philosophy to cybernetics) led him to orient himself to the evolutionary model by searching for new forms
Penck draws on the legacy of the historical avant-garde
While in the West modern painting is now regarded as a historically concluded experience
Penck continues to perceive it as the result of collective action
triggering a bursting evolution of the image that
the one that brought him international fame (often perceived solely as a stylistic figure
not as an element of an elaborate communication system) A.R
Penck instead reveals himself to be the artist who
was able to transform the figurative field into a megaphone through which to spread his theoretical and aesthetic convictions
His monumental painting relates both to the historical genre
to which he gives voice through an entire bestiary of totemic figures or archaic animals
The highlight of the last phase of his work
Penck pursues the idea of a visionary image capable of representing in a single perspective the choral nature of the world
And he does so by favoring the medium of painting
ideal for narrating the epos of human history in various formats
Penck also figures among the protagonists of sculpture in the last three decades: he has been involved in sculpture since his youth
and his first plastic group consists of models made from poor materials as part of the Standart project; in the mid-1970s he made wooden sculptures with an axe
Beginning in 1984 he concentrated on the bronze casting technique
working on different formats until he reached the monumental dimension
with a path similar to that already followed in painting
“Penck’s art is analytical,” writes Simone Soldini
wild or childish; its foundations rest on rationality
Each of his images is constructed to represent a concept
Let us try to summarize it by taking from the writings-manifestos or artist’s explanations
but probably also refers to ’banner,’ that is
This is how his writing-manifesto opens: ’Standart refers to a method of making information products [...]
once it has been perceived in its totality
is a standart.’ A situation experienced and brought back into painting through a theory of signs and symbols
Recreating it involves a (trained) capacity for overall perception
for analysis and reconstruction: ’making visible the logic of human interactions.’ But not only that
Standart is a system of signals made in such a way that it is not only perceived and imitated
multiplied and operationally modified’
Which makes it a system within everyone’s reach
Standart’s emblematic symbol is a figure of man reduced to his essence (head and sex well highlighted) that is a little bit reminiscent of the primitive and a little bit of the automaton of the future
In his writing-manifesto Penck also specifies that his Standart is an evolving model
“had a gift for drawing out of oppressive conditions a greater capacity for production
and he takes seriously the warning given to him by the voice of the people
He decided to adhere to the so-called Bitterfeld Way
a programmatic guideline addressed to artists that
foregrounds the need to give voice and representation to workers’ lives
The artist’s primary duty is to adopt a language close to the people
held regularly in Dresden beginning in 1946
typical subjects of socialist realism are displayed side by side
machinists and engineers are depicted in their everyday reality
appearing almost indistinguishable from one another
Penck achieves a decisive understanding of the mechanism of modern art: ’He who does not stand out

Cadel Evans (Australia) poders his World Championship victory
That is not a sentence that many would have imagined at 10:30 am in Mendrisio
when 202 riders set out for 19 laps of a 13.8km circuit
it was the Australian who appeared alone at the finish
His opportunistic attack at the foot of the final climb
brought him a success that was as spectacular as it was surprising
Evans takes emotional, historic world championship win for Australia
Evans was perhaps not versed in the art of victory celebrations
before patting his chest and kissing the ring that dangled on a chain around his neck - his wedding ring
who had set his heart on doing the double after winning Thursday's time trial
was a key protagonist over the crucial final two laps
opening the throttle and bridging the gap to a dangerous looking lead group that had just formed
Oliver Zaugg (Switzerland) and two survivors of an earlier move in Luca Paolini (Italy) and Greg Van Avermaet (Belgium)
Damiano Cunego (Italy) and Philippe Gilbert (Belgium) were among those who followed in Cancellara's wake
though the rest of a diminished field - down to not many more than 20 bodies - was not far behind
Zaugg put in a power of work for his Swiss teammate
but they were caught and the Italians took over
Filippo Pozzato and Ivan Basso leading up the second climb
the summit of which came only 2.8km before the line
it was a familiar figure out front on his own
that he would be less than happy to have to present the rainbow jersey to Alejandro Valverde of Spain
who remains under suspicion for his alleged involvement in Operacion Puerto
But the idea of presenting it instead to the rider now on the attack must have filled him with a similar dread
The escapee was Alexandre Vinokourov (Kazakhstan)
who recently returned from a two-year ban for blood doping
but attacked again going through Mendrisio
building a healthy-looking lead until a counterattack by Alexandr Kolobnev (Russia) helped bring him back
had another dig on the final downhill section between the two climbs
this time opening the gap with another skillful descender
who ignored the Swiss rider's invitation to come through and capitalise on their advantage
Yet that move did prompt the crucial selection
with most of the Italians eliminated - only Cunego was left
Joaquin Rodriguez and three-time champion Oscar Freire - and apparently all the cards
It was inevitable that a Spaniard would attack
launching a cheeky attack up the left side before the climb of Novazzano - the final climb of the race
It was cheeky because the road split in two at this point
when the border disappeared and the road opened back up
no doubt hoping that a teammate would come up from behind
Cancellara cut a forlorn figure on the front of the chase group - a misnomer
since it wasn't actually chasing - looking around for help
Evans had 13 seconds over Kolobnev and Rodriguez at the top of the climb
He put his head down and raced for the finish
"I've been thinking about this race for two years," said a tearful Evans
But surely even he - in his wildest dreams - couldn't have foreseen this outcome
The first half of the world title race was dominated by an early break
which went clear as early as the first lap
Yukiya Arashiro (Japan) and the surprise infiltrator
fresh from his four stage wins at the Vuelta a Espana
Thirty seconds clear at the end of the first lap of 13.8km
with its two testing climbs and very little respite in between
they had doubled that advantage a lap later
A chasing group of four then formed behind them on the third lap
Volodymyr Zagorodny (Ukraine) and Olegs Melehs (Latvia)
and they came together on the climb out of Mendrisio - the Acqua Fresca - to make a lead group of 10
With none of the major nations represented - apart
from Greipel for Germany - they were able to capitalise on the peloton's indifference
steadily building a lead that nudged ten minutes after six laps
that the race proper began for at least one of the Italian team - Marzio Bruseghin
The Lampre veteran put in an incredible shift
leading the bunch for lap after lap - he led them through the start/finish area for an incredible six laps in succession - and almost single-handedly reduced the break's advantage
By the time that Bruseghin clocked off - his shift ending after eleven laps
or with almost two-thirds completed - it was down to around six minutes
but his clocking off coincided with a more significant development involving four of the Azzurri
including the defending World Champion Alessandro Ballan
Greg Van Avermaet and Francis De Greef (both Belgium)
Paul Maertens (Germany) and Johnny Hoogerland (Netherlands) formed a dangerous-looking nine-man group - so dangerous that they were hunted down by a counter-move of 20 men
That group included former champion Tom Boonen and two more Belgian teammates
another Italian - Luca Paolini - as well as Michael Rogers (Australia)
Geraint Thomas (Great Britain) and two more Spaniards in Juan Jose Cobo and Carlos Barredo
As the two groups merged to form one of some 29 riders
it was initially the Norwegian team of Edvald Boasson Hagen who led the chase
Stuart O'Grady and Matthew Hayman all prominent
The Ballan group gained a minute-and-a-half on the peloton
while the break continued to dangle out front
and it was down to a precarious 36 seconds
It looked then as though it would all come back together
the gap stretched back out - to two minutes over the next lap
As is often the case in the World Championships
the race didn't erupt until the final two laps
The Italians and Spaniards predictably massed at the front
but it was to be a race with a twist - and one that justified all that work by the Cyclones
could celebrate Australia's first ever world road race champion

CONTEMPORARY ART MAGAZINE SINCE 1980 More...
The first signs of the return to a figurative painting
capable of delineating the complexity of the world with spontaneity and immediacy
had already occurred from the early seventies
Then the phenomenon spread and merged within the current of the Transavantgarde which had illustrious champions in Enzo Cucchi and Julian Schnabel
to break up a discourse of linear experimentation and to indicate other (and apparently retroactive) expressive possibilities
“Befragung der Realität – Bildwelten heute”)
under the direction of the legendary Harald Szeemann
the first edition not to be under the leadership of the founder Arnold Bode
It is there that a consistent patrol of painters (Baselitz
which went against the modern tradition of the neo-avant-garde
with a presence of works that caused a scandal because mixed with a preponderant situation entirely dominated by procedural and conceptual art
Subsequent stages to confirm this unstoppable new way of reading the new times were then three exhibitions that marked an era: “aperto 1980” (Magazzino del Sale
signed by Achille Bonito Oliva and Harald Szeemann); “A New Spirit in Painting” (Royal Academy
Joachimides) and “Zeitgeist” (Martin-Gropius-Bau
But a further consideration must also be made: if it had not been for the Michael Werner gallery (at the time with its headquarters first in Berlin and then in Cologne)
with all its organizational and promotional efforts and financial support
it is probable that this generation of authors (of which AR Penck was a part) would not have had this unexpected international success and at the market level would not have touched the staggering value that partly make their works
Within this framework and at the end of a long journey and a profitable activity
AR Penck (1939-2017) is one of the most important German artists of the second half of the twentieth century
also because he was able to express the contradictions of post-nazi Germany and the East-West conflict through a very original language even if conceived in traditional expressive forms
a retrospective at the Mendrisio Art Museum (including over 40 large-format paintings
over fifty works on paper and artist’s books)
with the ‘intent to retrace the main stages of his journey
for decades Penck (pseudonym of Ralf Winkler) worked in East Germany focusing on works of clear socialist inspiration
but managing over time to transform the function of his painting into an element of dialogue with a more enlarged social and political system
precisely because of the paradox of Germany divided by the Iron Curtain
has been recognized and appreciated only in the West
so much so that on 3 August 1980 he decided to leave the GDR
The “Standart” figure concentrates the whole figurative universe and the symbolic image of A.R
and this “icon” is the starting point of the exhibition organized by the Mendrisio Museum of Art
marked by a rough and almost engraved painting
brings to mind the static nature and the synthetic strength of the rock engravings of the Camuni
Thanks to his famous stylized figure (the one that brings him to the apex of international fame
and not as an element of an elaborate communication system) Penck reveals himself as the artist who
has been able to transform the figurative field into a megaphone through which to spread their theoretical and aesthetic beliefs
His monumental painting is linked both to the historical genre
If we were to ask ourselves the rhetorical question whether art (and style) was born from the Egyptians
whether it was born from the line or from the color
from the decorative sign or from the narrative sign
here then that Penck would reply: “Art is born before any classical instance
it is born before any geometric module or rule
it is born with a radical and primitive sign
it is born thanks to a self without sweetness”
a sign that transports towards a second nature
facing with force the place usually reserved for the deeds of heroes and which he delivers into the hands of an anonymous figure and absolute: a universal and visionary image capable of representing the chorality of the world in a single perspective
The retrospectives that have been dedicated to him in the last two decades (Frankfurt
Oxford and The Hague) have provided a broad overview of his most important production
the Mendrisio Art Museum project aims to present the creative path of this giant of contemporary art through its multiform expressions
trying to provide the public with the tools to be able to understand its complex and profound structure

the Swiss Architectural Award conferred by the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio has made a place for itself among the major international accolades by recognizing emerging figures who have at least three major built works to show and whose constructions are notably sensitive to landscape
and the ethical and aesthetic challenges of the discipline
the biennial prize was unanimously granted to Bruther
the studio established in Paris in 2007 by Stéphanie Bru (1973) and Alexandre Theriot (1972)
Characterized by a broad outlook where architecture
Bruther has managed to combine acceptance of the functional issues raised by today’s world with experimentation in projects situated halfway between rigor and freedom
among which the jury has highlighted three remarkable buildings: the Saint-Blaise Center in Paris (2014)
and Maison Julie-Victoire Daubié residence

The project for the Palazzo dei Congressi and the Biennale Pavilion
an exhibition open at the Teatro dell’Architettura in Mendrisio dedicated to the relationship between the Estonian-born American master and La Serenissima
he loved the city he called “a pure miracle”
who studied in Philadelphia where he grew up
went to the lagoon for the first time in 1928
during an educational trip aimed at exploring the historic architecture of the Old Continent
Also because in 1968 he received a commission to design the Palazzo dei Congressi and the Biennale Pavilion from Giuseppe Mazzariol (1922-1989) – art historian
then director of Fondazione Querini Stampalia
and Venetian university professor and politician – on behalf of the Venice Tourism Board (Aast)
Carlo Scarpa and Dino Buzzati in front of the model of the Palazzo dei Congressi project
Kahn presented his project in an exhibition held at the Palazzo Ducale in 1969
that showed off the three models on different territorial scales
at the time a Corriere della Sera correspondent
described it as follows: “It is a clear
solemn and in no way provocative invention”
However – as had happened a few years earlier to Frank Lloyd Wright with the house for students-architects on the Grand Canal and to Le Corbusier with the new hospital in the San Giobbe area – the project remained on paper
adding to the pages of a story that continues to this day: that of a Venice that misses its date with modernity

the exhibition – which also inaugurates the exhibition programme of the new space designed by Mario Botta on the USI campus – is sponsored by Mendrisio’s Fondazione Teatro dell’Architettura and the Academy of Architecture of the Università della Svizzera Italiana

The Giuseppe Mazzariol and the idea of Venice section

Mazzariol was against the museification of the city and its reduction to a “tourist ruin” and proposed re-launching its role as a meeting place between the west and the east through new works

1965) has pivoted his work on the relationship between nature and culture
juxtaposing animal or plant hybridization projects with the contamination of figurative arts
His art is an expression of an aesthetic of wonder and an ethic grounded in the value of life
from his first wooden sculptures in the 1980s
to the development of an extensive research program aimed at the generation of new poultry breeds
to the recent creation of a biodiversity park called Labiomista where
works and birds of the most diverse species coexist
The artist’s imagery revolves around the figure of the hen as a symbol of biocultural evolution
art is based on the re-invention of nature
asking it to materialize the visions of his imagery

Fabian Cancellara has been selected as the winner of the 35th Mendrisio d'Oro
Italian Marco Pinotti was so impressed with Cancellara's speed that he said
"The time that Cancellara rode maybe I could have done on a Vespa."
The Swiss award is not only destined for home riders; two years ago the award went to Paolo Bettini
after a year that included winning in the Olympics
and in 2005 the winner was Tom Boonen in recognition for his blistering season
Cancellara listed his objectives to La Gazzetta dello Sport
a very fascinating race for the pavé climbs and the crowds
I would like it to rain the day of Roubaix
then I can demonstrate that I am also the strongest in the rain and mud."

If a GC guy is going to win a one-day race
– This story was originally published in RIDE Cycling Review (issue 46)
The world championship was in his European backyard; Cadel Evans was on roads he would conquer
It was a beautiful moment for cycling – one earned in style by an honest guy
The victory in Switzerland was achieved a short distance from where Cadel Evans lived at the time
You can repeat it with a grunt of breath at the end of each word and think: that’s it
he unleashed his power and did what many believed he could: become the best bike rider in the world
Now he could purge himself of what had burdened him
Success is what he always strived for but it had often eluded him because of reasons beyond his control
victory was his and it came in the form of a world championship title near the Australian’s Swiss base
support and knowledge that an ambition could be achieved
How else could he have found the power to push on the pedals faster than you could say the words
but the road race in Mendrisio was identified long ago as something he believed he could succeed in
He had never been bold enough to suggest this in the lead-up to the race in Switzerland at the end of the season
but his body language at last revealed what everyone knew he wanted to express: these are my worlds
Evans finished third in Vuelta a España of 2009
which was also the first year in which he took a backward step in his quest for victory in the Tour de France
Before 27 September 2009 there was Cadel – a bike rider in his prime
a regular contributor to the results sheet
a guy with impressive ability who had become an integral character of a sport going through significant change
An honest force who often came close to victory but
because finishing second in the Tour de France is not something that escapes the headlines
He kept Aussies awake longer than most would have liked during the cold month of July as he plied his trade on the roads of Europe
He wants to be on top of the general classification
In the world championship he wore his country’s colours and while it was his audacious attack in the closing kilometres that earned him the right to salute – one that was later politely declined in favour of a gentle wave of the hand and a few well-aimed kisses – it was a team effort
Cadel’s worlds had been promised for so long that when the moment was realised
‘All the way’ is his approach; time is of the essence
This was the maiden one-day race victory for the GC Guy
A rainbow jersey – won near his European home
a year before the worlds were contested near his Australian home
“I didn’t know if I had a lead of five seconds or 50,” he said two days later
He generally doesn’t like to watch footage of himself compete
unless it’s a time trial and he can observe his position and consider improvements
Silver and bronze – Alexandr Kolobnev and Joaquin Rodriquez – had lost their race seven kilometres earlier
There was a look to the left by the Russian
opening up a margin that would eventually be sufficient should he opt for an animated gesture as he crossed the line
He eventually stopped pedalling but didn’t take a hand off his handlebars
There was no gesture to fire a pistol or do something else he could later trademark
Why expect the norm from a man who was doing something out of the ordinary
He laughs when reminded that he raced to the line like time mattered
I’ve lost world titles because of a puncture or a crash near the finish before
it’s never over until you cross the finish line so I was taking no chance.”
Since his teenage years Cadel had been a rider destined to win a world championship
when half a lifetime of toil was rewarded in Mendrisio
There’s a lot more to winning a bike race than simply being the fastest rider in the field
Before 27 September there were numerous articles that examined the nature of the world championship road race and the conclusion was that this one-day contest near the end of the season was a lottery
Escapes could be made and allegiances formed – national pride or professional commitments could
the next it could be considered a climbers’ course
On the menu in 2009 was a circuit that suited the characteristics of several riders but one knew it intimately
Cadel was a local and also one of the favourites in the part of Switzerland he has adopted as his home away from home
He married a girl who grew up just south of the Italian border and the couple eventually settled in Stabio in the Ticino canton
[his now ex-wife] Chiara Passerini was there that day
So were many others who believed that this rider from Australia could finally prove that he was the best
“I had no knowledge of cycling as a sport,” said Chiara of her life before being introduced to her future husband
“My dad knew a little but nobody in my family knew who Cadel was
he’s mountain biker.’ But that’s all I knew.”
He has won the MTB World Cup (twice) and the ProTour (in a year when the winner was determined by performance in all the major races including each of the Grand Tours – Giro
He was the first Australian to lead the Giro d’Italia and the first from his country to finish on the podium of the GC rankings at the Tour (which he did twice
the first time with the second-smallest margin in the event’s long history)
Cadel has won a time trial stage of the Tour (retrospectively) and
was voted the most popular athlete in Australia in a poll conducted by a leading Australian media organisation
He has taken the sport of cycling to a new level in the land where he was born and yet it was in his adopted country that he would pull off the biggest victory of a career that is far from over
Cadel had also fallen short of some of his aspirations
But this didn’t mean he had surrendered hope; there was still unfinished business to attend to
You don’t walk away from something just because of a setback
Had he done that he would have quit cycling a long time ago
Simon Gerrans and Alejandro Valverde (above) were captains of their teams for the road race in Mendrisio
Early in his biography Close To Flying – which was being finalised in the week the world championships were held – Cadel explains the satisfaction generated by the sensation of a perfect day on the bike
He talks of freedom and the pleasures of cycling
how a trail could seem like nature’s roller coaster
Ever since he’s been working on becoming the best bike rider in the world
It is a ride that has taken him up mountains and through valleys
There were moments to celebrate and close calls to frustrate
all of which contributed to a great sense of satisfaction when he did finally achieve what he always believed possible
When he eventually reached that finish line in first place
His simple gestures were the antithesis of what is expected of a world championship winner
“I had so much personal satisfaction from that result that I didn’t need to be exalted,” he said of his subtle salute
“It’s funny to look back on the 2009 season
I had so many obstacles to overcome that people aren’t aware of – things that I can’t really talk about because of professional reasons
Matters beyond his control burdened him during the season
Well before racing commenced he prepared an itinerary that he felt would best suit his objectives
At the top of the list were two races: the Tour de France and the world championship
everything else could be slotted in to ensure the best possible results from three weeks in July and the final Sunday of September
Not every problem was disastrous but he became overwhelmed; from team politics to equipment concerns to stupid incidents that took away the chance of victory despite all other elements falling into place
‘One day your honesty and effort will be repaid’
Wes Sulzberger and Stuart O’Grady lead the peloton on the 16th of 19 laps of the 262.2km race in Switzerland’s Ticino canton (above)
Mick Rogers was the lone Aussie in an escape group but he was outnumbered by Italians and Spaniards so Neil Stephens made the call to chase
Cadel has the rainbow jersey but the efforts of these men — along with Allan Davis
Matt Lloyd and Simon Gerrans — helped him win
What had kept him motivated for all these years – the hope that one day he could prove to himself that he was the best in the world – became a reality in Mendrisio
And he stood on the podium just three kilometres from his Swiss home with friends
neighbours and relatives all on hand to witness the occasion
stunning teamwork and surety of his strength
The images of Cadel on the podium show a man carefully surveying the scene as though his eyes were lenses and his mind was the hard drive that was uploading all that he saw before him
It needed to be recognised and appreciated
otherwise it might have seemed like just another sequence generated by his imagination
“It’s a sickening feeling that you have on the podium
when you’re standing there in second or third place and the guy next to you is putting on the rainbow jersey
In 2009 it was a different sensation altogether
I woke up at 3.00am the morning after the race and I was pissed off at myself; I thought I had a race to ride
my recovery is going to be compromised.’ It took a moment to dawn on me: ‘That’s right
“That’s what can happen after a three-week stage race
I got so used to waking up and thinking about what I had to do
I realised it had already been run and won and… oh
that’s the rainbow jersey hanging there on the wall
I went riding to clear my head but I didn’t ride with the rainbow jersey on
My life has not changed one little bit and that’s just fine
I do have a nice jersey and a gold medal hanging in my apartment and
amongst my little family of friends and supporters
I’m very satisfied with our efforts this year.”
