Nestled among trees on the top of a slope above USM’s Münsingen plant in Switzerland
steel modular structure and an uninterrupted view of the Aare River basin and a backdrop of the Alps in the distance
Recently restored to mark its 50th birthday in 2019
the Buchli has now been reopened as a guest house to welcome corporate visitors and friends of the company
With its original construction being honoured and replicated within the renovation
the legacy of Swiss architect Fritz Haller
Built in 1969 using the USM Haller MINI steel construction system
the Buchli (named after the field it sits on) was a radical statement of its time
the visionary behind the modular furniture system itself
the house was the prototype for a new form of ‘living with a system’
Despite its modularity and ability to reconfigure
only three other buildings utilised this modular technique across the country
with USM going on to focus purely on the furniture
the third generation to be leading USM at the time
Together they developed three building block and installation systems (MINI
MIDI and MAXI) as well as the USM modular furniture ‘Haller’ – now regarded a design classic and featured in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art
After building the Münsingen company HQ in 1963 and then the office pavilion in 1965
Haller went on to design the family’s private residence
with an approach that sought to shift societal norms and ways of living from the post-war era which had gone before
and open-plan living and sleeping arrangements
were deemed unconventional yet drew attention from a global audience who admired its bold and courageous aesthetic
Looking down the slope to the pool area and garden house (made using the same construction system)
the view of the factory is visible through the trees
This proximity to the workplace also merged the two areas together
at a time when work and home were distinctly separate environments
With our homes now connected to our careers more than ever before
were the duo ahead of their time in bringing them closer together
the interiors take shape with a minimalist aesthetic
dining and kitchen area is centred around a floating fireplace as the 360-degree view takes centre stage
glass doors allow access onto balconies at the rear and front of the property
remain open to each other but can be closed off thanks to internal pocket doors
all finished in USM’s trademark furniture colours
Honouring as much as of the original design as possible
it is difficult to imagine how it would function as a family home
while at the same time its storage capacity and the functionality of fixtures and fittings remain a masterful work of art
The construction itself sits on a base plate embedded into the hillside
a feat of engineering considering the uneven terrain on which it is situated
its restoration presented a whole new set of obstacles to overcome
Used as a private residence until the early 2000s and then as an office building
it remained in its original state bar a few minor renovations over the years
while also ensuring it met current legislation and could stand the test of time going forward
the renovation resulted in the entire property having to be taken down
many of the vertical columns were replaced and redesigned in a chrome-nickel steel to prevent further corrosion going forward
and prioritisation of values such as longevity
is a mindset that runs through the company
While the house is a visual representation of the foresight held by Schärer and Haller directly
‘With our system we hold the perfect tool in our hands to respond to every decade’s needs and requirements,’ states USM’s UK CEO
‘The timeless design combined with the almost endless modularity of the USM modular furniture and the high
make it resistant against all short-term design trends.’
With nearly 150 years of innovation behind the company
the Buchli is just another example of USM’s pioneering genius
which can be seen inside the house and is based around a single ball joint on which the system is still centred today
is part of Haller’s legacy in creating a design which spans eras
Placed alongside furniture by design icons Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe
the Buchli is a showcase of avant-garde design and gives a glimpse into the structured
architectural minds of both Schärer and Haller
can now be appreciated and continued for years to come
As you step outside and look back at the Buchli
its systematic construction draws admiration
Resembling a large-scale version of the much-loved furniture system the design world holds in great regard
students can learn from for generations to come
it embodies the vivacious spirit of Haller which
is one of the most significant lessons to take away

Abergavenny Town Council liaised with Chairman of Abergavenny Twinning Association
John Prosser to organise a delegation to participate in a Town Festival and Youth project in Munsingen
The delegation included: twinning enthusiasts
A delegation of five “Twinners” plus ten Royal Air Force Air Cadets and two supervisors from the Abergavenny Branch travelled for the festivities with the Cadets staying longer to engage in youth camp projects with peers from twin towns
Although Abergavenny is not directly twinned with Munsingen
both are twinned with Beaupreau and delegates often meet at joint events
a recent one being the successful trip to Beaupreau by Abergavenny Rhinos football club earlier this year
Mr Prosser commented: “Abergavenny Twinning Association continues to embrace the ethos of twinning where friends across different countries develop friendships and experience each other's cultures and everyday life
“This visit has culturally strengthened our relationship with Munsingen in Germany
It also gave the opportunity for student air cadets to participate in a European project.”
Councillor Kyle Jamie Eldridge one of those who attended
said: “The spirit of Abergavenny and Wales was in our hearts and we had the unique opportunity to have a crash course in international diplomacy
I am proud of our great Royal Air Force Cadets
as beyond the camaraderie that is quite often associated with young people today lies a very florescent silver lining of respect and tolerance of which I believe defines them as a generation.”
A spokesman for Royal Air Force Air Cadets at 2478 (Abergavenny) Squadron said: “Thank you for this wonderful opportunity
especially during the bike rides and working on youth projects with others who became good friends
A great big thank you from the RAF Air Cadets at 2478 (Abergavenny) Squadron.”
For more information on how to join the Abergavenny and Beaupreau Twinning Association, please contact John Prosser via [email protected]

BackTeam Presentation - LM P2: Race Performance #34 Oreca-JuddA successful Asian Le Mans Series campaign earned Race Performance an invitation to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016
The ambitious Swiss team will be running in LM P2
This Swiss team was a last-minute selection for the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours
It made its debut in 2003 in the national Formula Renault Championship
and won the title on its third attempt after which it raced in the Renault Mégane Trophy Eurocup for 4 seasons (2006-2009)
Race Performance made its debut in the Le Mans Series in 2010 with the ex-Rollcentre Radical-Judd
Hungaroring and Silverstone rounds were relatively low key
but the team was justifiably proud of its first Le Mans 24 Hours
The Radical-Judd driven by Le Mans regulars Marc Rostan and Pierre Bruneau
finished eighteenth (6th in LM P2) after a steady race in which Race Performance’s main ambition was to see the chequered flag
the Swiss outfit swapped its Radical for an Oreca 03 chassis still powered by the Judd BMW engine
Ralph Meichtry from Switzerland and Norwegian Thor-Christian Ebbesvik finished tenth overall in the Le Castellet 6 Hours on 3rd April (6th in LM P2)
the first round of the 2011 Le Mans Series
The team finished 37th overall in the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 km
Things went better at Le Mans (19th overall and 6th in LM P2) for Frey-Meichtry-Rostan on the team’s second outing in the Sarthe
Race Performance was back at Le Mans the following year and young Swiss driver Jonathan Hirschi had replaced Marc Rostan
The three Swiss drivers entered the Le Castellet 6 hours finishing fifth overall before retiring at Spa
their second preparatory race before tackling the Sarthe classic in which they saw the chequer in twenty-sixth place (11th in LM P2). That year the Swiss squad was on the reserve list and took advantage of the withdrawal of Sébastien Loeb Racing to join the entries for the 90th Le Mans 24 Hours
Before the Sarthe challenge Race Performance scored two good results with second place at Silverstone and fourth at Imola
Team regulars Michel Frey and Patric Niederhausen were joined by Dutchman Jeroen Bleekemolen for the 24 Hours
They finished 19th overall and 10th in LM P2
In 2014 the team entered for the European Le Mans Series with ex-Morand Racing driver Franck Mailleux backing up Frey
The Judd BMW engine seems to have found some extra grunt
The team was also given an invitation for the Le Mans 24 Hours
At Silverstone in the first round Michel Frey looked on course to win the race until Tristan Gommendy pulled off a daring overtaking manoeuvre when they were lapping a GT
34 Oreca 03-Judd suffered from overheating due to blocked radiators and they could do no better than 18th
For Le Mans the car will have the 03R kit and the Franco-Swiss duo will be joined by British driver Jon Lancaster

Bärbel Eppinger's internationally competed Oldenburg stallion Rulaman has passed away
Rulaman was a 1996 born Oldenburg stallion by Rubinstein out of Romanze (by Romadour II x Adjutant x Nonsens)
Born at Eppinger's Lerchenhof in Münsingen
Rulaman wasn brought into the world with the help of Bärbel's brother Heinert
The stallion first proved himself in sport before he became a licensed stallion
He was at based at equestrian centre Wintermühle in Neu-Anspach
where Bärbel was working at the time as a trainer
The stallion made his sport debut as a 4-year old in 2000
Three years later he made his debut at small tour level at a local show in Neu-Anspacht in August 2003
In October 2003 his international debut followed at the CDI-W Kaposvar
where he finished in the top five in all three small tour classes
Bärbel handed the ride to her cousin Anne Eppinger-Lutkemeier
Eppinger and RulamanIn 2005 Bärbel and Rulaman made their national Grand Prix debut
Their first international Grand Prix ride was at the 2006 CDI Wiesbaden
In 2007 it was Anne's turn again on the stallion and she rode him in the junior level classes at the 2007 CDI-PJYR Bonn
She also won the bronze medal at the 2007 German Junior Rider Championships
Rulaman was a real family horse as Eppinger regularly competed him herself at that time
Eppinger mainly focused on national level competition
although she also campaigned him at the CDI's in Kaposvar
They finished fourth in the GP Special at the 2008 German Professionally Dressage Riders Championships
In 2012 Bärbel's 16-year old son Marc Eppinger competed the stallion the first time and last time at L-level at the local show in Münsingen in June 2012
It was the stallion's last competition start at age 16
The horse achieved over 30,000 euro in prize money
a substantial amount at the time collected at national shows
He was first licensed for the Hessian breed society in Alsfeld in February 2005 when he was 9 years old
Rulaman at the 2010 CDI HagenIn 2006 Oldenburg approval followed and in 2007 the Baden Wurttemberger verband approved him
He was offered at stud at Eppinger's yard as well as at the state stud Marbach in Gomadingen
He did not do a stallion performance test as he was accepted based on his sport results
Rulaman did not make an impact as a breeding stallion with only 16 sport horses and 3 broodmares recorded in the FN database
Rulaman enjoyed his retirement to the field
An injury to his coronet band no longer properly healed and last week it was decided in the best interest of the horse to put him to sleep
"He was a gift," Bärbel told Reiter Journal
