Jansen Campus- A Bridge Between The DNA Of a Place And Its Future Courtesy of davide macullo architectsThe internal landscape is articulated as a fluid space, almost as if it were formed by an extension of the urban streets of the village, a system of solids and voids expanding in all directions. The apparent mass of the new building is dematerialised internally, flooded with natural light teeming through the generous openings and the grand slicing overhangs that project the users out to the landscape. Courtesy of davide macullo architectsThe new Jansen Campus is also characterised by research, carried out during the design, on innovative materials and technological solutions- some used for the first time in construction. For example the semi-structural facade, produced by Jansen, is a new system produced in such a way as to guarantee a continuity of the reflective, glazed and transparent elements of the building, without the need for external support mechanisms. In the basement there are ca. 1000sqm reserved for archives, mechanical rooms and technological systems. Despite its apparent sophistication, the atmosphere of the internal landscape reflects the principle of reducing details to a minimum. The constructive elements are therefore always explicit and follow the rationale and economy of the site and the project, giving the space a technical, industrial atmosphere. plan 01Alongside the building itself, the ‘architecture’, particular care has been taken in the landscape design and in the choice of both furniture and art works to complete the spaces. The landscape design involved the planting of 80 trees of 35 different species that have existed in the Rhine valley for at least the last 200 years and as such it takes on a didactic role in explaining the region’s landscape. Contrary to the traditional art investment for a work created in-situ, and thereby explicitly connected to the building, it was preferred, within the same economic parameters to take a more ‘dynamic’ route. As such, the art works selected reflect the intention of interacting with the complexity of our contemporary world and contains pieces by young, internationally established, contemporary artists. Courtesy of davide macullo architectsJust as in the attention given to every detail in construction the same precision and care went into the choice of furniture and the lighting and technical elements in the building It was decided that the furniture pieces would be products of the recent generation of designers the result of a particular technological research be of resistant and durable residential expansion for the village like many other built landscapes of switzerland this is typified by a multitude of different sized inclined planes its angled roof creates shadows and reflections throughout the day to characterize the built area of the place the extension to the site allows for the creation spaces on a human scale within the existing site’s fabric this has led to the formation of a series of areas that evoke the atmosphere of public squares all images © enrico cano the facade is clad in a dark pre-patinated perforated rheinzink mesh giving the material a color that evokes a density of tones the semi-structure is a new organization produced by jansen to guarantee a continuity of the reflective without the need for external support mechanisms a complex of fibers to the concrete casting was developed to adhere to the metal reinforcement a radiant system based on thermal mass principles is integrated into the building; heating and cooling circuits have been installed into the floors and ceilings ensuring the quality conditioning of all spaces the internal landscape is articulated as a fluid zone acting as an extension of the urban streets of the village a system lunches and a restaurant all lead off this area beside the reception is the ‘mission control’ representing the operational heart of the company and acts almost like the stock market where all information regarding the inner workings of the company is processed here in real time on the first floor there is a workplace and informal meeting space open to all with a teaching sector with foyer and other meeting rooms an open plan office for the communications section is located on the second level and on the third is the boardroom with a panoramic terrace individual offices and more intimate working zones requiring more privacy are distributed along a spiral with their area increasing as the coil rises AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style Nine weeks later their bodies were found near the Kobelwald crystal cave There is nothing to indicate that one of the most mysterious crimes in Switzerland began at the crossroads between Oberriet and Kobelwies in the canton of St one comes across a hilly forest area at this junction The path splits into three directions: On the right on the left through the bend to Kobelwies and Kobelwald an asphalt path leads through the forest up to the Kobelwald crystal cave one of the most beautiful accessible caves in Switzerland with a mineral deposit that is unique in the country 17-year-old Brigitte Meier and 15-year-old Karin Gattiker were last seen alive at this intersection their bodies were found near the crystal cave police assumed that the two were killed immediately after they disappeared The case is extremely complex and is still widely discussed in the region Almost everyone in Switzerland knows about the crystal cave murder It was one of the biggest true-crime cases in the country before people even knew what true crime was and provides insights that can be unbearable: having to acknowledge that there are cruel coincidences and questions that will remain forever unanswered and Thomas Benz is standing at the crossroads leading up to the cave Benz is 47 years old and describes himself as a «criminal archaeologist.» He is familiar with every detail of the case For years he conducted research focusing on a gray car that had been seen at the intersection around noon on the day of the disappearances His theory: «It was homicide in the heat of the moment.» and often vacationed in the region as a child He has been working on the case ever since he founded the «Crystal Cave Murder Interest Group» with a former police officer trying to reconstruct the crime and organizing lectures Benz has since withdrawn from the group following differing positions among the members Benz knows that as an unofficial investigator he is operating in a gray area and has to be careful with mere suspicions only one thing can be said without a doubt about the exact course of events: «Something must have happened quickly at that intersection back then.» Another thing that is certain: On the morning of July 29 The friends wanted to cycle through the Appenzellerland for three days On the first day they rode to Herisau to visit Gattiker’s grandmother they met a man who took a picture of the teenagers with Meier’s camera The photo is the last one in which the young people are seen alive with Meier resting her arm on her friend’s shoulder where they slept in a youth hostel for the next two nights On Saturday they wanted to go back to Goldach It is believed that the young women lost their way they were seen by a motorist at the intersection from where one road leads off to the crystal cave The girls gave the impression that they were lost but there were only the bicycles at the side of the road A search operation soon began that was to become the largest such effort in the history of the St Many firefighters and volunteers were involved The bodies were discovered in early October A hiker had noticed the smell of decomposition in the forest and then found Meier's body It was near the crystal cave in a root hole the police found Gattiker’s body in a small cave There were all sorts of oddities in connection with the double murder The day after the disappearance of the girls a cave keeper found that the cave had been broken into during the night or at least the lock at the entrance had been removed the police also found a pen with a company logo They were unable to determine the meaning of this One detective was suspended during the investigation for sharing confidential information The identity of the man who had photographed the teenagers on the lawn also remained unclear An architect who lived with his family in a house below the cave was long considered the main suspect he could not be proven to have committed the crime nor could three cave guards and a sex offender all of whom came to the attention of investigators at some point as murder has a 30-year statute of limitations in Switzerland the National Council and the Council of States approved an initiative from the canton of St Gallen that was triggered by the double murder But a new law would have no consequences for the case What was once barred by the statute of limitations remains so German case analyst Axel Petermann began researching the crystal cave murder Petermann had led the first homicide unit in Bremen and has been involved with FBI profiling methods since 1999 This approach assumes that the selection of victims the traces left by a perpetrator at the crime scene and the reconstruction of the crime scene allow conclusions to be drawn about the perpetrator’s personality thereby narrowing down the number of suspects Two aspects in particular interested him in the case there were the circumstances of the crime: A harmless bike ride without adults turned fatal for the two girls it was also about the destruction of an illusion: A double murder had taken place in an idyllic Swiss mountain community who wrote about the crystal cave murder in his book «On Behalf of the Dead,» says he thinks it was carried out by a a lone perpetrator who probably met the teens by chance He may have offered them his help or suggested a tour of the cave «Perhaps it can be said that the victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time,» he wrote The girls’ bodies were already too decomposed for coroners to determine the exact cause of death assumes that the perpetrator killed them by blunt force: In Meier's case presumably to sexually abuse her afterwards he assumes that the weapon could have been a stick there is much to suggest that the perpetrator must have known his way around the steep rocky area and must also have known about the cave in which Gattiker was hidden Petermann is certain: «The perpetrator is no stranger to the people in the village.» Perhaps this also explains why it has been difficult to come to terms with the crime: It has challenged certainties and destroyed trust Any outdoorsy person who was good at climbing had a tendency to collect minerals and had a good knowledge of the surrounding mountains could suddenly become a suspect since the rock slab under which Meier was lying was too heavy to move alone it is possible that the perpetrator had a helper So there was possibly another confidant in the community the mood in the local villages varies widely Others resigned themselves to a situation in which the case might never be solved some women who were Meier and Gattiker’s age at the time fear that the perpetrator could still be among them Many villagers were very helpful in trying to solve the case which produced some deep hostility in some corners who took over the case as cantonal investigating judge at the time he says it was shocking how much the villagers suffered from the crime but at the same time also repressed it: «A lot of people thought ‹Something this bad can only come from the outside,›» he said by telephone how likely is it that people will testify against a neighbor in a village where everyone knows everyone Oberholzer says other aspects also complicated the investigation a long time had elapsed between the disappearance and the discovery of the girls' bodies which meant that valuable clues had been destroyed by the weather The large number of suspects was also a dilemma «One always had the impression that the crime could have happened in a different way,» Oberholzer says Did the youths get into a car or were they taken away in it Or was the perpetrator someone wholly unknown who committed a double murder while passing through and disappeared again
