In the fall of 2023, the DDPS investigated the application for a building permit for an F-35A training center with a flight simulator and training facility for ground personnel. The Communauté régionale de la Broye (COREB), the Association for the protection of the interests of the Broyard municipalities affected by the Payerne military aerodrome (ASIC) and 14 municipalities had filed preventive oppositions.
Much of the real estate infrastructure at Payerne, Meiringen and Emmen air bases can be reused for the F-35A’s engagement, because its dimensions are similar to those of the F/A-18. Adaptations are necessary at the level of the training infrastructure, technical installations and safety devices. For construction measures, Parliament approved a commitment appropriation of 120 million francs as part of the 2022 army message.
Concepts and planning for the infrastructure adaptation to the F-35A have been prepared and verified in detail over the past twelve months in collaboration with the U.S. government’s F-35 project office, the F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office, and manufacturers Lockheed Martin and Pratt & Whitney. The planning work for the implementation of the infrastructure has now been successfully completed.

Cameron Scott second with Julian Alaphilippe completing podium in Payerne
Zijlaard started early in the day before intermittent drizzle made the city circuit in Payern treacherous.
Australian Cameron Scott (Bahrain Victorious)
managed to keep the bike upright and come within a second of the Dutchman but was unable to kick him out of the hot seat
Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quickstep) finished third just over two seconds behind Zijlaard
Zijlaard's previous best result this year was seventh place at Nokere Koerse and he surpassed his expectations with the victory
"It's crazy - I can't believe it," he said
and the last two hours have been the worst two hours of my life because of the stress
I wanted this so much for myself for the team
It's super nice to show that we are capable of doing stuff like this and it's a super team
so I was going in here with a goal which was the prologue
It's quite hard to believe but it's reality and I'm really happy

The usual hum of traffic on the A1 highway was replaced by the din of F/A-18s touching down on the carriageway
A large stretch of the A1 was shut down for 36 hours for the test -- a relatively common exercise for NATO members but one rarely seen these days in neutral Switzerland
Departing from the Payerne military airfield
the first F/A-18 fighter jet landed without a hitch at around 10:00 am (0800 GMT)
The three other F/A-18s also landed successfully on the highway
which crosses Switzerland from the French border in the west to the Austrian border in the east
The so-called Alpha Uno exercise is aimed at making sure the Swiss airforce can keep operating if its bases are hit in the event of a conflict
the four-lane motorway is also narrower than the usual landing strip
and can only be used once the central safety rail has been removed
Even small rocks and debris can cause considerable damage to jet engine turbine blades
Another landing and take-off cycle was due to take place later on Wednesday
The Swiss airforce operates around 30 rapidly ageing F/A-18s
the Swiss government has chosen a fleet of 36 F-35 stealth fighters
Deliveries from US manufacturer Lockheed-Martin are due to begin in 2027 and last until 2030
Switzerland's long-standing position has been one of well-armed military neutrality and the landlocked country has mandatory conscription for men
Swiss neutrality traces its roots back to 1516 and has been internationally recognised since 1815

AP reports -- An experimental solar-powered airplane took off from Switzerland on its first transcontinental flight Thursday
Pilot Andre Borschberg planned to take the jumbo jet-size Solar Impulse plane on its first leg to Madrid
His colleague Bertrand Piccard will take the helm of the aircraft for the second stretch of its 1,554-mile journey to the Moroccan capital Rabat

Earlier this month the town of Payerne switched on Switzerland’s largest solar installation on the La Bouverie industrial zone next to the township
It will produce an impressive 6,600 mega watts of electricity per year
Payerne is also home to the 100%-solar-powered round-the-world aircraft Solar Impulse
which recently flew non-stop from Japan to Hawaii
The aircraft uses solar cells to charges its batteries sufficiently during the day to allow it to fly through the night
the plane flew 5 days and 5 nights in a row
The La Bouverie solar installation will generate half the town’s electricity
Around 25 square metres of the park can supply one household with all of its electricity
nearly half of Payerne’s 3,300 households
An area twice the size would run the whole town
Installed by Greenwatt Group E in partnership with the municipality, the park went up in 3.5 months. The panels cover nearly 4 hectares of grass, which might go to waste were it not for two diminutive breeds of sheep called Ouessant and Skudde
These sheep are small enough to roam below the panels and hoover up the grass
has installed a total of around 24 mega watts of solar power generation capacity along with 36 mega watts of wind
Its installations now power over 23,000 Swiss households

Probably the most talked about Air Show in 2014 was the modestly entitled Air14 at Payerne airbase
Organised to pay tribute to 100 years of Swiss Military Aviation with a unique air display to remember history and honour airmen
it also nicely coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Patrouille Swiss and 25 years of the PC7 Team
Frank Togher was there for the first weekend
To mark all three of the major Swiss Air Force anniversaries unique
the organisers organised two weekends of air shows
These took place in the last weekend in August and the following weekend in early September
with each show day having a different theme
This review covers the first weekend which had the themes of Reconnaissance and Air to Ground
With six international displays teams ranging from Patrouille Suisse to the Croatian Wings of Storm and just about every aircraft type in the Swiss Air Force (past and present) it was set to be a great weekend
One of the principle sponsors Breitling also had a strong presence with the Breitling Wingwalkers
Breitling Jet Team and the Super Constellation
Completing the flying display line-up were a number of fast jet and helicopter displays from a number of European nations including Belgium with their F-16 Fighting Falcon solo
France with the Ramex Delta pair of Dassault Mirage 2000Ns
Poland with their MiG-29 solo and Su-22 duo displays and the Czech Air Force with the Mil Mi-24V/35 battlefield assault helicopter
The organisers also set up a number of unique set pieces for the flying display pairing dissimilar types
these included a formation F/A-18C Hornet and Super Puma
a flypast of the Patrouille Suisse and Swiss Airlines Airbus A330 and what can only be described as formation of “Swiss Jet heritage” cold war jets and later a balbo of helicopters past and present
Sat atop an Ammunition bunker with a view across the whole airfield
we were fortunate to watch the air show from the first arrivals on Thursday through to departures on the Monday
Air show days saw huge crowds drawn to Payerne for this very unique celebration of Swiss Aviation
for the large crowds the big display teams from around Europe including the Patrouille de France
Midnight Hawks and PC-7 Team were the main highlights
However the Patrouille Swiss were clear favourites
with displays including many flares as well as the superbly flown flypast with Swiss A330
For the enthusiast there were many rich pickings
for example the opportunity to once again see a Dassault Mirage III in the air was one
The aforementioned “Swiss Jet heritage” formation comprised of Hawker Hunter
de Havilland Vampire and Northrop F-5 – all in Swiss military markings and was just awe inspiring
In the static a Croatian Mil Mi-8 was a rarely seen visitor
Warbirds included the Red Bull P-38L Lightning
P-51D Mustang Moonbeam McSwine and a Douglas Skyraider
the tribute continued throughout the week with a half day airshow until the following weekend with Pat Suisse
This allowed schools and locals to attend (helping to reduce demand for weekend tickets apparently)
steers the solar-powered Solar Impulse HB-SIA prototype airplane during his first flight over Payerne April 7
is powered by four electric motors and designed to fly day and night by saving surplus energy from its 12,000 solar cells in high-performance batteries
Wednesday’s flight follows six years’ work by 50 engineers and technicians led by Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard on the so-called Solar Impulse project
