home-ice victory over visiting Vítkovice Ridera in the First Game of their Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals match-up It was an evenly played contest in which each team fired 31 shots on target and all three goals came in the first period Vítkovice opened the scoring very early. Just past the one-minute mark, Marcel Barinka picked the low corner just inside the near-side post on the rush Vítkovice went to the powerplay looking to draw even and got some good looks – particularly on a cross-seam one-timer that missed the open near side and hit a sliding Mayer in the dying seconds of the penalty the Czech visitors weren’t able to threaten much as the Lakers did a good job of keeping the puck out of their zone Sunday afternoon ended perfectly for Kloten: a full stadium at Schluefweg an important 3:2 win over the Lakers and even the chance to finish the qualifiers in the top 6 Kloten's big figure was Harrison Luc Schreiber who plays with a Swiss license because of his junior days at EV Zug scored the goals in the 39th and 41st minutes to make it 2:1 the Lakers had dominated the game in Kloten who had already scored an important goal in Langnau on Saturday Schreiber later gave the Lakers renewed hope with a cross-check for which he was sent to the showers early Robert Nardella reduced the deficit to 2:3 for the Lakers during the long powerplay but Kloten also won the powerplay duel against Rapperswil: Kloten scored two goals from three powerplay chances while Rapperswil-Jona only scored from five chances and eleven minutes of overtime through Nardella shortly before the end Kloten can no longer be denied a place in the play-in the Kloten team can still hope to overtake Gottéron 41st (40:43) Schreiber (powerplay goal) 2:1 57th Nardella (Moy/powerplay goal) 3:2 (without goalkeeper) - Penalties: 5 times 2 plus 5 minutes (Schreiber) plus playing time (Schreiber) against Kloten 6 times 2 plus 10 minutes (Djuse) plus playing time (Djuse) against Rapperswil-Jona Lakers - PostFinance top scorers: Ojamäki; Strömwall Rapperswil-Jona Lakers: Nyffeler; Baragano Keller (all ) and Hawryluk (supernumerary foreigner) Quinn (both injured) and Holm (supernumerary foreigner) Rapperswil-Jona Lakers without a goalkeeper from 56:15 to 56:43 The Rapperswil-Jona Lakers secured Playoffs qualification with a one-point game against Regular Season leaders the Växjö Lakers who remain unbeaten in six games in the 2023/24 season of the Champions Hockey League.  Rapperswil headed into this game knowing they desperately needed at least a point - and they delivered The Swiss team scored the first goal of the game in the first period and even went 2-0 up at the start of the second but two goals from Växjö by the end of the opening 40 minutes levelled the playing field once again "We started pretty well," commented Rapperswil's Colin Gerber "but in the second period we got a little bit sloppy and they scored on us." The 25-year-old Swiss player scored the first goal of the game "I got the puck from Moysy and just tried to get it to the net," he said "I'm really happy it bounced in!" have unrivalled fan support - both home and away - and this game in far-away Sweden was no exception blue and white scattered around the arena.  "there were so many of them here they make it like a home game." the one point is enough for Rapperswil to move on to the Playoffs for the very first time in the CHL: "We're really excited and looking forward to the games in November." Four goals were enough to secure a win in regulation for the Swiss team. Forward Jordan Schroeder was instrumental with two goals, while netminder Melvin Nyffeler made 19 saves and allowed a single goal The victory gives Rapperswil a three-goal aggregate lead heading into their Return Game next week Rapperswil had their first chance to strike at home after Mannheim's top scorer David Wolf was called for interference, and just over a minute into the powerplay, the hosts converted. American forward Schroeder collected a tip off a shot wristed in to beat Mannheim's netminder Felix Brückmann at 7:44.  The 1-1 equaliser would come less than four minutes later, off a pass from blueliner Paul Mayer to Linden Vey who was stationed on the goal line and had no issues jamming the puck past Nyffeler.  A roughing call on Lakers defenceman Fabian Maier gave Mannheim their first man-advantage of the evening but they had no luck converting.  With less than three minutes remaining in the first period, Rapperswil's Martin Frk got the crowd going after he dished the perfect pass to teammate Gian-Marco Wetter It was Swiss precision from Top Scorer Wetter who slid the puck past Brückmann to put his side 2-1 up leading into the period intermission Minutes into the second period Rapperswil would be handed another chance to extend their lead with powerplay number two but couldn't find the back of the net despite several excellent chances.  while their German rivals struggled to find their flow although Wolf had a great chance on the doorstep of Nyffeler.  With a little under two minutes left in the period and a powerplay incoming Mannheim pulled their goalie for a sixth man on the ice Despite no luck coming before the sound of the buzzer they'd start the third period with fresh legs and the tail-end of a powerplay The Swiss side continued their dominance in the third period, netting goal number three through Schroeder who picked up his second goal of the night. A backhand shot rifled in by Nicklas Jensen was a near miss on Brückman who momentarily lost sight of the loose puck, while Victor Rask followed that up with a near miss of his own.  A slashing call on Dominic Lammer gave Mannheim a vital opportunity to claw their way back into the game, but Tom Kühnhackl's stick imploded as he connected with the puck Mannheim sealed the win for Rapperswil after a poorly timed play and turnover saw Czech forward Frk collect and bury the puck directly infront of an open Mannheim net to make it 4-1 for the host side The win marks victory number four for Rapperswil who will now head into the Round of 16 Return game with a three goal lead on aggregate while German side Mannheim will be under intense pressure to perform or exit Lukko Rauma have become the first team to record three regulation victories this Champions Hockey League season, remaining perfect after a 5-2 victory in Switzerland over the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers Lukko took control of the game with three goals in the first period, then coasted from there. The first goal came off the rush at 5:50, with Tarmo Reunanen feathering a pass to Sebastian Repo, whose quick release beat Robin Meyer low to the stick side Then came two goals just 2:23 apart. First, it was Gabriel Fontaine on a breakaway making a move to freeze Meyer and scoring on a backhand deke. Two quick penalties then had the teams skating 4-on-4. With lots of open ice, Niclas Almari’s stretch pass found Jami Krannila who beat Meyer over the glove and under the crossbar Early in the second period, Lukko went up 4-0. It was Harri Kainulainen from the high slot scoring through a crowd and past a screened Rapperswil goalie Lukko didn’t seem concerned with adding to their score but rather keeping the puck out of their own net which they did successfully until the dying minutes After only facing 10 shots in the first two periods, Daniel Lebedeff was busier in the third. With under 13 minutes to play, Roman Červenka set up Tyler Moy with a nice chance but the Lukko goalie made a great glove save Rapperswil finally found the net with 3:40 to go. Pressing in the zone, Gian-Marco Wetter made a nice cross-ice backdoor pass to Maxim Noreau When Repo was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for slashing the Lakers sensed an opportunity and pulled Meyer for a sixth attacker it took just six seconds for Reunanen to score a long-distance empty-net goal Victor Rask did cash in on the powerplay with 1:25 to go to bring Rapperswil back within three Johan Lundskog and Fabian Gunnarsson will be supporting head coach Stefan Hedlund this coming season One of the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers' new assistant coaches is a familiar face in Switzerland - Johan Lundskog has worked for HC Davos and SC Bern in the past Now he is returning to the National League as part of Stefan Hedlund's staff the Swedish-Canadian dual citizen was with the DEL's Adler Mannheim The other new assistant is Fabian Gunnarsson He has been working within Mora IK's organization since 2018 and was part of the main squad last season It will be the 28-year-old's first tenure outside Sweden besides a stint in Norway during his last season as a player the Lakers have also hired a new goaltending coach, Jaakko Valkama The Finn joins them from the DEL's Schwenninger Wild Wings Swiss newcomers Rapperswil-Jona Lakers welcomed Slovan Bratislava for their second duel in the 2022/23 season Rapperswil managed to take a 6-4 win on the road despite Slovan's persistent fighting spirit and it was a similar story this time around with the Rapperswil beating the Slovaks 4-1 in front of their home fans With no time wasted, Maxim Noreau swept the first one in for Rapperswil with just 30 seconds on the clock! Following his lead, Yannick Capaul got the next one passed the net at the 4:53 minute mark With Slovan feeling the heat, Daniel Demo was called for interference, allowing Nando Eggenberger to capitalise on the man advantage bringing a comfortable 3-0 lead with less than eight minutes on the clock.  The middle frame had much less action than the first, resulting only in a single goal for Slovan at the hands of Liam Pecararo with the assist by Brant Harris.  At the top of the final stanza, roughing calls were distributed on both ends of the ice, namely for Tomáš Matoušek and Inaki Baragano With Slovan looking to change things around again an empty net in exchange for the man advantage was taken The swiftness of the first period appears to have already sealed Slovan's fate as Rapperswil closed out the Group Stage and their debut campaign on Europe's biggest stage with a stellar 4-1 win at home!  Rapperswil-Jona Lakers were founded in 1945 in the Swiss city of Rapperswil They spent the first 30 years of their existence playing in the lower tiers of Swiss ice hockey before establishing themselves in National League B Switzerland’s second tier of professional ice hockey Their long sought-after move into the Swiss top flight finally materialised in 1993/94 when Rapperswil-Jona Lakers were crowned NLB champions and moved into National League A for the very first time They spent an astonishing 20 seasons in the Swiss top flight between 1994 and 2014 before dropping down to the second tier for the 2015/16 season in time for the 2018/19 season and have remained there ever since Though they have never won the Swiss championship the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers won the Swiss Cup in 2017/18 one of their biggest sporting achievements to date the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers’ home arena is located directly on Lake Zurich and was reconstructed in 2006 The capacity of the arena is 6,100 fans and has been a hub for fans and players since 1987 when it was constructed.  In 2022 they qualified for their first-ever CHL season took Red Bull Munich to OT and beat eventual CHL Champions Tappara Tampere in their debut season but unfortunately failed to make it to the Playoffs.  A third-place finish in the NL regular season secured them qualification for 2023/24 Red Bull Munich proved the stronger, more experienced side against CHL newcomers Rapperswil-Jona Lakers but the Swiss side showcased their feisty spirit and vocal fanbase and were on equal terms with the DEL side Munich got the perfect start to the game, playing high up the ice in front of the Rapperswil-Jona net and their opening pressure paid off with Ben Street firing in a shot that rebounded off the opposition netminder.  Konrad Abeltshauser of Munich was called in for tripping at 5:15 offering the Swiss NL side the chance to test their powerplay line-ups and that paid off with Rapperswil-Jona’s Leandro Profico scoring one and a half minutes later to tie the game 1-1.  Rapperswil-Jona had a few more chances but none materialised into a goal Munich stabilised their game and had more of the puck for the remainder of the opening period but both teams headed for the locker rooms at level terms after 20 minutes.  Midway through the second period, Yasin Ehliz of Red Bull Munich redirected Zachary Redmond’s shot into the back of Melvin Nyffeler’s net to put his side into a one-goal lead Before the two teams headed for the locker rooms Ben Street found himself in Rapperswil-Jona’s third with a stray puck coming his way He didn’t crack under pressure and calmy fired through Nyffeler hitting the top right-hand corner to double his side’s lead Munich added two more in the final frame to end their first CHL game of 2022/23 with a comfortable 4-1 win on the road.  The 31-year-old forward has agreed to a one-year contract and will thus stay with the Lakers until the end of the 2023-24 season Janick Steinmann, team manager of the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers decided to add another import player to the team for several reasons one being that the team will once again play in the Champions Hockey League next season and thus face a heavier work load Brett Connolly, who was part of the Washington Capitals roster that won the Stanley Cup, suited up for HC Lugano last season Following just a little over a minute later, Waltteri Merelä brought a smooth 2:0 lead for Tappara to close out the first period Good pressure from Rapperswil off the top of the second period, as they tried to get something going during their back-to-back powerplays when Tappara’s Tyler Kelleher was called for hooking and Patrik Virta for holding the stick, but the Swiss team were unable to maximize their advantage and get one on the scoreboard Despite missing their powerplay advantage, Tyler Kelleher got one in the net at 34:37 Off the start of the third period, Rapperswil came out flying, with Nicklas Jensen getting the first point on the board for the home team Tappara’s Valtteri Kemiläinen was called for slashing at 47:24 giving Rapperswil the chance they desperately needed to inch their way closer to a win Looking for a chance to make things happen, Rapperswil pulled out goalie Melvin Nyffeler in order to gain more offensive power With a penalty called and subsequently reviewed and rejected for Tappara Rapperswil lost their only real chance to turn this match around The disappointment for Rapperswil continued, as Jordan Schroeder nearly got one in the net Rapperswil fought hard to secure a win at home the game headed to OT.Both teams cautiously tested each other in the opening minutes of 3-on-3 play with Heljanko pulling off an out-of-this-world save to keep Tappara in the game pressing high up the ice and chasing the puck and that nearly paid off when Roman Červenka stole a puck from a Tappara defender and found himself in front of net alone he was ushered away and held by Savinainen which the referees deemed hooking sending him off the ice for the third time in the game. With the extra skater but Heljanko made save after save to keep the Finns in the game.1:30 into the OT powerplay Rapperswil finally got the goal they were so desperately hunting as Jordan Schroeder fired through Heljanko after some rapid passing play from the Rapperswil special team.  Remember when we were wondering if this is a “make or break” year for Daniela Ryf she dropped out of the PTO European Open in Ibiza the five-time Ironman World Champion (not to mention five-time 70.3 world champ pictured above on her way to the win in St proved that she still is very much the woman to beat with a solid win over the number one in the PTO world ranking Ashleigh Gentle at Ironman 70.3 Rapperswil Daniela Ryf returns to old coach Brett Sutton. Is Ibiza the first race of a make-or-break year? Ryf and Gentle were within seconds of each other coming out of the water both trailing Switzerland’s Alanis Siffert by just over 45 seconds Ryf proved that she was returning to top form Gentle managed to hang on for about 10 km before Ryf rocketed away hitting T2 with a lead of 6:36 on the Aussie star By then it was obvious the race was just between those two as another Swiss athlete with Germany’s Anne Reischmann just two seconds behind her On the run Gentle would claw back some time who crossed the finish line for her eighth win in Rapperswil in 4:04:33 Gentle was almost four minutes faster on the run (1:18:19) but was still over two minutes down as she finished in 4:06:56 Reischmann would run her way to the final spot on the podium “After a challenging 5 weeks it could not feel better to be back healthy to push again and feel good,” Ryf posted on her Instagram account She also noted that she “simply love(s)” her new set up on her Felt IA bike Ryf also recently announced that she’s no longer with Asics and is now sponsored by Hoka A post shared by Daniela Ryf (@danielaryf) Like Gentle, both Philipp and Haug are renowned as outstanding runners, but both are excellent on the bike, too, so Ryf will need another dominant bike ride if she’s going to take the title in Roth. The ride in Rapperswil certainly indicated that she’s capable of doing just that.
