The same training was used to prepare the crews of the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn commercial human spaceflight missions
the seven-time Formula One™ world champion and IWC brand ambassador was accompanied by students from Dibia Dream
a non-profit organisation fostering STEM education
Their presence is also a reminder of Lewis Hamilton’s own incredible career journey spanning more than three decades and sends an inspiring message: you can be anything you want in life – a pilot on the racetrack
One of the most successful racing drivers of all time
Lewis Hamilton is a multifaceted personality
whose interests and ambitions extend far beyond his sport
The seven-time Formula One™ world champion is deeply fascinated by space and human space exploration
He has visited renowned space training facilities and repeatedly expressed his desire to take part in a space mission in the future if it serves a purpose and contributes to the betterment of all humanity
IWC Schaffhausen now teamed up with the Polaris Program and its Philanthropy Director and instructor pilot
to offer Lewis Hamilton an opportunity to experience the flight training that is part of the organisation’s programme of preparing astronauts for space
recently completed the first of three human spaceflight missions
the Polaris Dawn crew wrote history by successfully performing the first commercial spacewalk.
“Since Lewis Hamilton became an IWC Brand Ambassador in 2013
we have created so many unforgettable moments and memories together
As his record-breaking era with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team now draws to a close
we are excited to give him an opportunity to complete a flight training for astronauts and bring him one step closer to space exploration,” explains Chris Grainger- Herr
Flight training is essential for astronauts
Fighter jet training has been at the heart of human spaceflight since the beginning
All early astronauts were fighter jet pilots
and experience in piloting a jet was an essential requirement for going to space
Flight training was also a key pillar in the preparation of the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn crews for their missions
While the g-loads experienced in a jet or a rocket cannot be directly compared as they affect the body in different ways
jet training still offers compelling benefits for astronauts
it allows the crew members to familiarise themselves with operating in a high-risk and high-consequence environment
similar to what they would experience during launch
While they are pressed down into their seats by several times their own body weight
go through extensive technical checklists and monitor critical flight parameters – all while being mentally aware of their surroundings and prepared to act in case something unexpected should happen
Lewis Hamilton’s space training kicked off with an extensive briefing and inspection of the L-39 Albatros jet
John “Slick” Baum gave Lewis Hamilton a detailed overview of the manoeuvres they would fly and how they simulate different situations an astronaut experiences during a spaceflight
During their subsequent discovery flight lasting almost one hour
Lewis Hamilton and his instructor performed a series of manoeuvres
They practiced accelerations and decelerations to experience lateral g-forces
They also practiced higher g-loads by banking or pitching the aircraft hard
A highlight was flying a parabola figure for a zero-g demonstration
during which Lewis Hamilton briefly experienced the feeling of weightlessness
which eventually began to float freely in the cockpit
which is more than astronauts typically experience on ascent
“We put Lewis Hamilton through the same training we used to prepare the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn crews for their missions
He showed truly impressive skills at the controls of the jet and proved that he can pilot any machine
whether it is a powerful race car or a jet
With the astronaut flight training for Lewis Hamilton
we underscore the Polaris Program’s commitment to making space exploration accessible to more people,” said John “Slick” Baum
Philanthropy Director and instructor pilot of the Polaris Program
Lewis Hamilton wore a dedicated race suit featuring a “space mission” patch with his car number 44
He will wear the same suit during this weekend’s race at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar
he wore the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (Ref
With its highly scratch-resistant and resilient Ceratanium® case
it is the perfect watch to withstand the harsh conditions in the jet cockpit
Dibia Dream students send a powerful message
The training was also attended by a group of students from Dibia Dream
This nonprofit organisation sparks social change through STEM education and recreational activities for underserved youth and has impacted the lives of 40,000 students across 32 states and 12 countries
The students spent the entire day engaging in a variety of activities related to space exploration
They also got a chance to meet with Lewis Hamilton and ask him questions prior to take-off
Their presence served as a powerful reminder of Lewis Hamilton’s incredible journey
from his humble beginnings in karting at the age of eight to becoming one of the most acclaimed drivers in the history of motorsport
As the students cheered alongside the runway
they sent an uplifting message to youths around the world: you can be anything you want in life – whether it is a racing driver
Just two months away from the release of the movie F1
IWC Schaffhausen brought its collaboration with the highly anticipated racing feature to life at the 82nd Members’ Meeting in Goodwood
were present at the event and shared intimate insights into their experiences of the film shoot
Visitors could discover an original race car used in the movie filming at the IWC garage area

IWC Schaffhausen has been the “Official Timing Partner” of the Goodwood Members’ Meeting; an intimate “members only” weekend filled with motor racing and high-speed track demonstrations
After having made several appearances on the Goodwood Motor Circuit with its own racing team
the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer’s presence this year was all about its collaboration with Apple Original Films’ upcoming racing feature F1 from director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer and more
which will be released globally in cinemas on 27th June and distributed by Warner Bros Pictures
IWC Schaffhausen is one of the official team sponsors of the fictional “APXGP” team appearing in the movie
Actors Damson Idris and Kerry Condon offered insights into the film shoot
the fictional 11th team in FORMULA 1 and the teammate of veteran driver Sonny Hayes
Kerry Condon’s character Kate McKenna is the race director of the fictional “APXGP” team and the first female technical director in FORMULA 1
the stars were interviewed by presenters Emma Walsh and David Green
They shared fascinating insights into the shooting of the movie
which took place over the past two years at real Grand Prix™ races around the world
Visitors could also marvel at an original “APXGP” race car used for the film shoot at the IWC garage area
the car was modified to look like a current FORMULA 1 car and fitted with lightweight and compact camera systems that were specially developed for this movie
A breath-taking stunt demonstration of car chase scenes
One of the highlights of IWC’s presence of the 82nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting was a live stunt demonstration showing how high-precision action sequences are filmed in Hollywood
It was delivered by stunt professionals that were involved in shooting scenes for the movie F1 on the iconic Silverstone circuit
Stunt driver Eliott Cole drove the Mercedes- AMG GT with a special “APXGP” black and gold livery
which was presented for the first time in public
He was accompanied by actor Damson Idris during the demonstration
The car was closely followed by an authentic Mercedes GLE 63S camera car with a top- mounted motorised arm commonly used in major film productions
This gyro-stabilised crane system can be panned 360 degrees and tilted up and down
enabling film crews to shoot highly dynamic and high-speed tracking shots of moving objects like horses
The demonstration on the Goodwood Motor Circuit included tight tracking shots
overhead drone footage and onboard perspectives
with the AMG GT passing just centimetres away from the camera arm
The demo was captured by 14 cameras around the track and live- streamed worldwide
Pop-up store exhiiting IWC Schaffhausen's main watch novelties
In line with the partnership with the movie F1
IWC recently launched a collection of new Pilot’s Watches
These novelties also took centre stage at a pop-up store in Goodwood
accompanied by an exhibition of movie props like a race suit
Shown on site was also the new Ingenieur Automatic 40 with a green dial (Ref
This limited edition is inspired by a prop watch worn by the movie character Sonny Hayes
IWC celebrates its official sponsorship of the fictional “APXGP” team appearing in the movie
The first performance chronograph in a precious metal is worn by Damson Idris’ character
It combines the Gérald Genta-derived integrated bracelet design with a full ceramic execution for the first time
To achieve a faithful ceramic translation of the emblematic design
the watch features an innovative multi-part ceramic case construction
The model is also distinguished by a high level of detail in the finishing of its ceramic components with a combination of satin-finishing
The IWC-manufactured 82110 calibre with a Pellaton winding system
ceramic components and a power reserve of 60 hours is visible through the tinted sapphire glass case back
Ceramic is extremely hard and resistant to scratches but also lighter than steel and unaffected by temperature changes
These properties make it an ideal material for use in wristwatches
IWC Schaffhausen’s ceramic expertise dates back almost four decades
the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer introduced the world’s first wristwatch with a black zirconium oxide ceramic case
IWC’s engineers have continued to innovate in this field and introduced material innovations including silicon nitride
the first watch cases made with a Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC)
IW338903) combines the Gérald Genta-derived integrated bracelet design with a full ceramic execution for the first time
bezel and case back ring are all made of black zirconium oxide ceramic
Even add-on parts like the crown protection and the crown are made of this extremely hard and scratch-resistant material
Connecting to the case via its middle links
the integrated black ceramic bracelet offers perfect ergonomics
As ceramic is a particularly light material
the bracelet is highly comfortable to wear
The black dial features the characteristic “Grid” structure consisting of small lines and squares
a hallmark design feature of the IWC Ingenieur
the black hands and metal markers are filled with Super-LumiNova®
The Ingenieur Automatic 42 represents a true-to- proportion ceramic execution of the emblematic Ingenieur design that is as slim as possible
IWC opted for a pure ceramic case construction with three parts
bezel and case back ring are all made of ceramic
As the bezel and the case back ring are secured to the case ring with functional screws
this construction also requires a titanium ring on the inside
The ring accommodates the screws from the front and the back
holds the movement and contributes to a high water resistance of 10 bar
Instead of being held by the titanium ring
the sapphire crystals on the front and the back are pressed directly into the ceramic parts
This innovative new approach makes it possible to achieve a ceramic translation where the case construction remains perfectly faithful to the original stainless steel design
Maintaining the characteristic proportions and intricate angles of the Ingenieur while ensuring structural integrity and waterproofing marks an outstanding design and engineering achievement
A high-level of detail in the ceramic finish
With a hardness value of about 1300 Vickers
zirconium oxide ceramic ranks among the hardest materials on Earth
ceramic can only be processed using diamond-tipped tools
IWC has pushed the boundaries in ceramic finishing
The case components are satin- finished and then treated with a smooth sand-blasting
with a delicate polishing around their edges
The bracelet links boast the same elaborate surface treatment with a combination of satin-finishing
This multi-stage and highly complex finishing results in a refined aesthetic
offering the perfect level of light reflection
Pellaton winding system with ceramic components
The Ingenieur Automatic 42 is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82110 calibre
Its Pellaton winding system efficiently converts movements of the oscillating mass in both directions to energy for the mainspring
Components of the winding system that are subject to high stress are made of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic
The automatic wheel and the clicks are made of black ceramic
while the rotor bearing is made of white ceramic
The balance oscillates at a rate of 4 Hertz
The movement is visible through a tinted sapphire glass case back
complementing the watch’s all-black design
it combines the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer’s SPRIN-g PROTECT® shock absorber system with a technical design inspired by the team’s colours
The shock absorber spring is manufactured from a bulk metallic glass and coated with PETRONAS green Super-LumiNova®
Formula One™ is a sport that demands everything from the drivers and their teams
the drivers are constantly being thrown around and exposed to high centrifugal forces when braking or cornering
the emotions also run high off the racetrack
When the racing action on the track sparked maximum levels of excitement
the CEO and principal of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1™ Team has been spotted wearing a prototype of the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL
These moments have inspired a watch that is engineered to withstand the enormous stresses of Formula One™

the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer launches the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (Ref
it combines IWC’s SPRIN-g PROTECT® shock absorber system with a technical design inspired by the team’s black and PETRONAS green colour scheme
The spring that protects the movement against the extreme g-forces generated by impacts on the watch has been coated with Super-LumiNova® in the team’s signature green and glows in the dark
Protecting From High the Movement G-Forces
The patented SPRIN-g PROTECT® shock absorber system was developed by IWC’s engineering division XPL and first introduced with the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL (Ref
Taking movement shock protection to the next level
it is based on a cantilever spring that cushions the movement inside the case
If the watch suffers an impact on the case
the movement and the case typically are subjected to high g-forces
The spring absorbs a large portion of these forces before they can reach the movement
Designed with a special form allowing it to evenly spread the stress across its length and width
the spring is manufactured from a bulk metallic glass (BMG)
this advanced material is significantly more elastic than conventional crystalline metals
The Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team features a case and crown made of Ceratanium®
this advanced material combines the lightness and robustness of titanium with a hardness similar to ceramic
The black dial features a grainy technical structure
which is stamped into the brass base with a special tool
The newly designed triangular black hands also feature Super-LumiNova® around their edges
The outer ring with the minute scale appears to be floating freely on lamellae attached around the dial
The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32101 calibre with a double pawl automatic winding system and a power reserve of 120 hours
bridges and oscillating mass are blackened to match the all-black design
The movement is visible through a tinted sapphire glass case back featuring a print with Toto’s signature
It is fitted with an integrated green rubber strap
An additional black rubber strap is included as an accessory

FC Schaffhausen lose 3-1 in Wil and lose touch with the competition
relegation to the Promotion League seems inevitable
The team coached by Hakan Yakin initially took the lead in Wil
was shown the red card in the 32nd minute for an emergency brake and the visitors had to play outnumbered
but then Wil turned the game around with three goals in the space of nine minutes
Schaffhausen are now seven points off the bottom of the Challenge League
A deficit that can hardly be made up in the remaining three rounds
Even if there is a direct clash with Nyonnais next Friday

this young engineer and watchmaker was assistant director of E
one of the main watchmaking brands in the United States
He was keen to combine outstanding Swiss craftsmanship with contemporary American technologies in order to produce better-quality watches for the American market
the craftsmen were sceptical about building a modern manufacture with centralised production
Finding it impossible to implement his project in French-speaking Switzerland
Jones sought another location in the diminutive nation
and finally set his sights on Schaffhausen
Schaffhausen was a town with a rich watchmaking history
and there Florentine Ariosto Jones met Heinrich Moser
From this meeting the International Watch Company was born in 1868
In 1875 high investment costs in the property and plant led to disagreements between the shareholders and F
The latter left Switzerland to return to his home country
but IWC found a new investor in the person of Johannes Rauschenbach
He bought out the company in 1880 and committed himself to maintaining the production of watches based on the same principles of industrial manufacture
IWC launched one of the first special watches for aviation
It had a revolving bezel with a marker hand to record take-off times
two traders from Portugal came looking for a wristwatch with all the qualities of an onboard stopwatch (readability
accuracy) – and so the ‘Portuguese' was born
another adventure began in the world of diving
In 1967 came the creation of the unprecedented Aquatimer
It became the must-have watch for professional divers
was a complete revolution in more ways than one
The aim of the designers was to build a perfectly protected and extremely accurate watch – which could be rewound simply by the wearer moving their arm
IWC has pursued its dynamic by developing a fascinating combination of meticulousness
expressing all its knowhow in each of its timepieces
Although IWC was born and bred in Switzerland
the house was in fact founded by an American
the watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones from Boston
he set up the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen
a water supply was optimal for watchmaking – and legend has it that after Florentine Aristo Jones met the wealthy industrialist Johann Heinrich Moser
builder of the first hydroelectric plant in Schaffhausen
the groundwork for IWC Schaffhausen was laid
IWC and the pilot watch go hand in hand, thanks to the brand’s rich ties to aviation history
The company’s first pilot watch dates back to 1936
with its most legendary models the IWC Mark line that’s linked to the air forces and which will top any collector’s list at auction today. IWC pilot watch design nods to original aviation functions
black dials set with contrasting luminescent displays that recall cockpit instruments. Add the triangular index at 12 o’clock
and you have an especially evocative look (even more so when fixed on those black dials; cue 1994’s Mark XII Pilot’s Watch with an automatic movement)
Aviation tradition continues in the likes of the IWC Pilot’s Watch Timezoner chronograph with an automatic 89760 calibre that powers a chronograph
all set in a stainless steel case with a black luminescent dial matching a black leather strap
Or there is the understated IWC Mark XVIII Top Gun Miramar
a more rugged item with a ceramic case that’s coupled with a magnetic resistant
resetting flyback function also instantly returns a running stopwatch hand to zero before counting resumes without a pause
Whether topping your list is a pilot
navigator or diver’s watch (the latter’s offering being the IWC Aquatimer
which has a patented quick-change system for swapping a steel to rubber strap)
legibility is key and which is best embodied in the IWC Portugieser collection
Among the most handsome designs are the Portugieser Annual Calendar pieces
a 7-day power reserve item with a stainless steel case and in either a silver or blue dial showcasing the month
On the reverse side is a view of the automatic
Those who like to view the movement may also fancy the Chronograph Classic
notably the stainless steel item with a blue or silver dial that’s equipped with a flyback function
Watch fans may take the view that IWC’s strong military ties equate to a house that’s more an old hand at men’s watches
which saw IWC add eight new models
If your list includes ultra-feminine designs
the diamond-bezel Da Vinci Automatic 36 with a stainless steel case and lovely raspberry strap
fits the bill - as does the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36
another stainless steel item here set on a chic blue alligator strap
that too was well served via the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph complete with the movement on view on the reverse side for admiring the 89630 calibre’s perpetual calendar and chronograph functions
Another mechanical wonder is the Da Vinci Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph – the first time all the complications have been merged onto one dial - again with the in-house manufactured 89900 calibre on view on the reverse
For nearly a decade IWC has partnered with the Charles Darwin Foundation that works to protect the Galapagos Islands
The watchmaker has created a line of special edition Aquatimer chronographs
where a portion of sale proceeds from each item goes to support the foundation’s tireless research
On the cover picture are IWC Schaffhausen Chief Marketing Officer Franziska Gsell Etterlin and board member of the Laureus Foundation Switzerland and Dan Nicholl

An IWC Schaffhausen watch worn by Lewis Hamilton has sold for $254,000 USD (₣220,000 CHF) at auction
the event was organized by Bonhams to benefit Laureus
a non-profit that organizes sports programs for social good
The selling price of the watch was seven times that of what analysts had estimated following a spirited bidding round
Hamilton had worn the timepiece on the podium of the 2024 Silverstone Grand Prix while accepting the trophy for his record-breaking ninth F1 win
IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 with a blue dial
The Ingenieur was originally launched in 1955 as IWC Schaffhausen’s first antimagnetic wristwatch for civilian use
its name is most frequently associated with renowned Geneva watch designer Gérald Genta
who was tasked with re-designing it in the 1970s
Genta detailed his artistic vision of a stainless steel luxury sports watch with an integrated bracelet
the Ingenieur Automatic 40 reflects the bold aesthetic codes of Genta’s Ingenieur design
It is distinguished by the characteristic bezel with five functional screws
the integrated bracelet and the special dial pattern
After initially presenting an Ingenieur Automatic 40 in titanium and three stainless steel versions with a black
the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now adds a new dial colour to the collection
bezel and integrated H-link bracelet with butterfly folding clasp made of stainless steel
The ergonomics of the case and bracelet have been carefully re-engineered and improved down to the smallest detail
The 40-millimetre case size and the middle-link attachment ensure excellent wearability
The characteristic round bezel is screwed onto the case ring with five polygonal screws
The components of the case and the bracelet are elaborately finished with a combination of polished and satin-finished surfaces
This new Ingenieur Automatic 40 impresses with its striking blue dial
is stamped into the soft iron base using high pressure
the blue colour is applied with a PVD-coating
The rhodiumplated baton hands and the applied metal marker are all filled with Super-LumiNova® luminescent mass to ensure perfect legibility in all lighting conditions
The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre
a self-winding automatic movement with an efficient double pawl winding system
Converting the movements on the wearer’s arm into potential energy for the mainspring
it reliably builds up a power reserve of 120 hours
In keeping with the technical heritage of the Ingenieur
a soft-iron inner case shields the movement from the effects of magnetic fields on the watch’s rate

Luxury watch house IWC Schaffhausen and Qatar Duty Free will host the global premiere of a short film featuring seven-time Formula One world champion and IWC Brand Ambassador Lewis Hamilton at Hamad International Airport
The premiere coincides with Hamilton’s presence in Qatar for the Grand Prix at Lusail International Circuit this weekend (1 December)
The short film, produced by IWC Schaffhausen and due to be released on 15 June 2025, chronicles Hamilton’s journey as he tackles astronaut flight training led by John ‘Slick’ Baum, Philanthropy Director and instructor pilot from the Polaris Program. The training mimics that undertaken by crew for commercial human spaceflight missions such as Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn
Hamilton performs a series of high-intensity manoeuvres aboard an L-39 Albatros jet
These include accelerations and decelerations to simulate lateral g-forces (gravitational force equivalent) and a zero-gravity demonstration that briefly allowed him to experience weightlessness
Hamilton achieved a maximum of 7.5 g during the training
exceeding the typical g-force that astronauts face during rocket ascent
The training was witnessed by students from Dibia DREAM
Dibia DREAM’s presence underscores the film’s inspirational message that ‘you can become anything you want in life – a racing driver
Hamilton will share insights into his passion for space travel and discuss the highlights of his astronaut flight training with the Polaris Program

It’s a big day in the automotive world. No, it’s not the next season of Drive to Survive just yet, (T minus 17 days people). Yes, it’s the launch of F1 75 Live, kickstarting the launch of the 2025 Formula 1 season with a new set of liveries to be showcased at London’s O2 Arena. But more than that, it’s the launch of an all new commemorative IWC Schaffhausen watch with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One.
Toto fans and stans, this one’s for you. Could you be amongst the 100 lucky wrists to sport the same watch created for the Mercedes Team Principals wrist? All bets are on the table. Inspired by the racing teams signature colours, it boasts a specialised shock absorber system with bulk metallic glass and, of course, PETRONAS green lume on the dial.
You can expect to see this novel launch finding its way onto the leading men of Mercedes, George Russell and rookie driver Kimi Antonelli, given its adept features, from a spring that protects against the extreme g-forces all F1 drivers are accustomed to. Robust and lightweight for endurance sport, it’s a durable companion to get you round the tracks, quicker than you can say Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team.
