The Suhr SL68 MkII provides Marshall Plexi fanatics with the dynamic
bone-crushing tones of their dreams and then some for an investment that
is much less than the price of a vintage Plexi
Classic and Variac Marshall Plexi tones at any volume
Variac reduces voltage and switches to optimal bias setting
Mid Boost and Bright switches expand tonal spectrum
One could spend a lifetime searching in vain for the ultimate late-’60s Marshall Super Lead Model 1959 100-watt Plexi head
While these tube amps do appear on the market sporadically
the best ones seem to be stashed away in the hands of rock stars and deep-pocketed collectors
and the readily available examples usually have either undergone savage modifications or are anemic-sounding survivors that have been swapped more frequently than a bogus two-dollar bill at a Florida flea market
which offers guitarists everything they would ever want from a blazing Marshall 100-watt Plexi and much more at a cost that is a small fraction of inflated vintage prices
The SL68 MkII features the same familiar tone and volume controls and four inputs as a classic Super Lead
but it also adds one of the best designed master volume circuits available today
Boost and Bright switches and a Variac low-power mode
The tubes are a quartet of EL34s for the power and three 12AX7s for the preamp and phase inverter
there are numerous Plexi clones on the market these days
but the difference between the Suhr SL68 MkII and most other clones is like the difference between a Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grand Cru Burgundy and a mass-produced USA Pinot Noir
from the carefully selected components to the attention to the finest detail
A key feature is its custom output transformer
which is meticulously designed to provide clarity
dynamic responsiveness and elusive expressive feel of the real deal
The SL68 MkII’s EQ section is the classic Marshall tone stack with Presence
Middle and Treble controls that deliver the amp’s most aggressive and open tones with everything rolled up to 10
There are also separate volume controls for channel I (bright) and II (normal), and each channel has its own pair of high- and low-sensitivity ¼-inch input jacks. Like a classic Plexi, this is really a single-channel guitar amp with no channel switching
although you can jumper the bright and normal channels together via the bright/low and normal/high inputs to blend them together
(Image credit: Suhr)(Image credit: Suhr)Three mini toggle switches located above the control expand the amp’s tonal and textural range
The Fat-Cap switch is inspired by a secret mod that John Suhr saw on a legendary artist’s Plexi amp that came through his shop in the mid-’90s that adds body to the bottom-end without making the overall tone more muddy or dense
The difference between the Suhr SL68 MkII and most other clones is like the difference between a Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grand Cru Burgundy and a mass-produced USA Pinot Noir
The Mid Boost switch pumps up the gain to midrange frequencies to make the tone more notably aggressive but also more focused and prominent
The Bright switch provides three different settings that go from off (original Suhr SL slightly rolled back brightness)
in-between (a subtle brightness boost) and vintage (the full brightness of a vintage Plexi)
Unlike typical full/half and triode/pentode modes found on many modern amps
the SL68 features Hi (full 100-watt) and Lo (Variac mode) settings accessible via the power switch
The most impressive feature of the SL68 MkII is the sensation of déjà vu experienced while playing it
Using the guitar’s volume knob as a “channel switcher,” all the sounds you could ever want from a Plexi
from Eddie and Angus thru Jimi and Jimmy to Yngwie and Uli
The crushed glass harmonic crunch is world class
as are its viciously aggressive overdrive punch and sweetly singing solo tones
The Bright channel’s clarity and definition are pristine
delivering treble with brilliant zing and bass with muscular brawn

“The world’s most convenient all-tube amp head”: Steve Vai-backed firm Synergy has unveiled a tiny amp head that lets you swap in tones from some of the world’s biggest amp builders
“Modified connects us with a long-standing tradition of modifying Marshall amps that dates back to the 1970s”: Marshall unveils factory modded takes on the 1959 Plexi and JCM800 – tipping its cap to the amp wizards of rock’s golden era

Top Hat ProductionsDaniel Suhr shortly before his tragic death on September 11
FDNY firefighter Daniel Suhr got up for work as usual
and wished his two-year-old daughter good luck at her first day of school
it would be the last time his family would ever see him alive
two hijacked planes struck the Twin Towers in downtown Manhattan
sparking a city-wide emergency response effort to rescue the people inside
Suhr and the rest of his firehouse headed to the World Trade Center to help pull people from the buildings
a woman jumping from the building crash-landed on Suhr
The fatal accident marked the first death of a firefighter on 9/11
And it would leave a devastating void in the lives of the people who knew and loved Daniel Suhr
Top Hat ProductionsDaniel Suhr after a football game
Suhr boasted an impressive athletic career
serving as the captain of both the James Madison High School baseball and football teams
He had played football since he was six years old
cultivating a love for the sport that would last his lifetime
The two eventually got married and had a daughter
Daniel Suhr was both the son and brother of a firefighter
so it was no surprise that Suhr decided to pursue the same career
Suhr worked for the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY)‚ Engine Company 216
He was nicknamed “Captain America” because he was always trying to keep everyone safe
“Danny loved being a firefighter,” Nancy told CBC in 2021
but he was never quitting the fire department
“There’s a little bit of crazy in all of them and there was a little part of him that liked the fire,” Nancy continued
“He would be on vacation and I would hear him call the firehouse and be like
When he wasn’t saving lives or caring for his family
the South Shore High School football team in Brooklyn dedicated its season to him
When Daniel Suhr woke up on the morning of Sept
It also happened to be his daughter’s first day at school
and he complimented her new haircut before leaving
a hijacked plane struck the North Tower at the World Trade Center in what would become the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S
no one could have predicted that the towers would collapse
and the FDNY began sending firefighters into the buildings to rescue people
Suhr and the rest of his firehouse headed to the World Trade Center to help pull people from the towers. He was preparing to enter the South Tower when, at roughly 9:30 a.m., a woman jumped from the building and landed on him. This jumper was one of many, including the famous “Falling Man,” who chose to jump to their deaths rather than burn alive in the Twin Towers
“Apparently… somebody had fallen from the building [and] landed on him as he and his group were going into the South Tower,” Nancy later told CBC
Meanwhile, Nancy was at home, watching as the 9/11 attacks unfolded on her television and unaware that her husband was dying
Public DomainFirefighters tend to Daniel Suhr following the accident
“I was watching everything unfold on TV and I just got this wave of panic and sheer terror,” Nancy Suhr told CBC
“And then the phone clicked and it was Brian from the firehouse.”
Nearly 3,000 people were killed on 9/11
343 were firefighters and paramedics who put themselves in harm’s way to help save others
City of New YorkDaniel Suhr was a loving father and husband who was devoted to his job as a firefighter
In the days following the September 11 attacks
the media reported extensively on Daniel Suhr and the ultimate sacrifice he had made
When asked whether she felt any anger toward the jumper who landed on her husband
Nancy Suhr replied: “From what I understand
the person who ended up hitting [him] was a woman
‘Aren’t you angry?’ I’m like
She also noted that Daniel likely would have died anyway
had he made it inside the South Tower that fateful morning
his death likely saved the lives of many of his fellow firefighters
who stopped what they were doing to try to help Suhr
“When he was down, his co-workers, other firefighters from his house and other houses, helped try to resuscitate him,” Jean Suhr Ryan, Suhr’s sister, told News 4 Jacksonville in 2021
“When they closed the ambulance doors
The men from his firehouse would have been in there if he didn’t die first.”
When the fire department brought Nancy Suhr to say her last goodbyes to her husband
she promised him that no one would ever forget him
Nancy Suhr and her daughter have made media appearances to discuss Daniel Suhr’s legacy and to keep his memory alive
Suhr’s fire captain who was with him on 9/11
published the book Daniel Suhr: A Story of September 11th
“Daniel was everybody’s favorite friend
with a big heart and a big personality.”
After learning about Daniel Suhr, read the story of Rick Rescorla, the man who saved 2,700 lives on 9/11. Then, read about Scott Davidson

Suhr's tearful apology after finishing tied for seventh at the 2016 Olympics was a vulnerable and endearing moment for fans of the dominating pole vaulter
her body was battling a mystery illness that doctors never could figure out
“I just feel bad,” Suhr said on the podium afterwards. “I feel bad that I couldn’t do it for everyone back home…”
And then Suhr covered her eyes with her arms and wept
She retired in 2022.
"This small town girl is ready for some small town living," Suhr said on X

Batten explains why Suhr changed everything
the midi system that was a letdown – and the gear advice she’s learned the hard way
This month on Bought & Sold, Guitarist welcomes a true legend to share her story in gear, as Jennifer Batten discusses the most important electric guitars in her life
and what we should all be looking for when auditioning a new piece of gear
What was the first serious guitar you bought with your own money
“That was a Sunburst Les Paul
I got a loan from my dad and paid it back for many years
I believe the inspiration was photos of Duane Allman.”
What was the last guitar you bought and why
“Then I was sharing the stage with the phenomenal Brazilian guitarist Leandre Gomes; he had me play his Suhr Modern Antique 24-fret guitar into my system
I soon bought my own and have never played a more comfortable neck.”
“I was timid for quite a while because I’d played with a Floyd [Rose] since the 80s
but I now find I can do some pretty extreme vibrato with the bar using the Wilkinson locking bridge WVS130
But there is no locking nut; it just stays in tune
I also use Big Bends Nut Sauce on the bridge and nut.”
What is the most incredible find or bargain you’ve had when buying gear
often running $3,500 to $5,000 – but I found mine on Reverb from Japan for just $2,600!”
What’s the strongest case of buyer’s remorse you’ve ever experienced
“I’ve been using the Midi Commander [footswitch] for years to change presets
which looked very promising since I now need to change snapshots versus presets
I bought one and it toasted while updating
I gave up on them and missed my return window and am now very happy with Morningstar MC8
and the programming interface is really good.”
I’m only semi-sad that I sold the Washburn I used on the HIStory Tour and Jeff Beck tours – just because of the years of mojo and the historical angle
Have you ever sold a guitar that you now intensely regret letting go of
“I’m only semi-sad that I sold the Washburn I used on the [Michael Jackson] HIStory Tour and Jeff Beck tours – just because of the years of mojo and the historical angle
“I’m also semi-sad that I sold my King Tut Ibanez
She did an incredible job using gold leaf in Tut’s portrait across the whole body
so it now resides in the Hard Rock [Cafe] in Myrtle Beach [South Carolina]
It’s a beautiful display in a glass case and a very appropriate home.”
“Given the amount of effort that went into the artwork
I kind of gave up on such customisations because you don’t really know a guitar until you’ve spent many hours with it
The art typically comes well before you’ve had that chance to even know if you like it or not
so it’s wasteful if it doesn’t work out
I sold one of the small Ibanez George Benson guitars years ago
I don’t even know if you can get them any more
“My current main Suhr is a relic and looks like it was dragged behind a school bus on lava rock
It would be a nice couch guitar because it’s a hollow body and much smaller than the average archtop.”
“If you can spend some time with a guitar
I went on having played someone else’s [first]
The company’s reputation is well warranted
You can go on their site and detail every aspect of a custom guitar if you’re so inclined.”
When was the last time you stopped and looked in a guitar shop or browsed online
“I find myself in guitar shops frequently on my travels and
I admire the finishes while they’re hanging up
I prefer secondhand instruments that have already had the break-in period and the necks are stable
My comfort zone is plugging into my own system and being alone.”
I would rather have a good guitar and a cheap amp
and what you play through is number three.”
If you could only use humbuckers or single coils for the rest of your career
“With humbuckers or single coils
I now can definitely say I’d go with single coils
Simply because of the Fishman Fluence line making them low noise.”
“I’ve just added (for the HX Stomp and MC8) the Mission Engineering 529M Ultra-compact
High-Efficiency USB C-PD Converter for Effects Pedals
and Specialized cables 2.1mm to 2.5mm DC Cable for Line 6 HX (and other pedals) by SweetFoot pedals
which are impossible to find anywhere else
alfredo pasta-loving journalist from Long Island
in addition to being a contributing writer for Guitar World
Andrew has interviewed favorites like Ace Frehley
while his all-time favorite (rhythm player)
“I remember there was a video of Gary Moore and he played Red House on this Fiesta Red Strat
and I thought it was just the most incredible thing”: Is Toby Lee Britain’s next blues-rock superstar
but essentially it’s an instrument that belongs to the 20th century in many ways
what can you do to try to reinvent that vocabulary to make it seem relevant?”: Steven Wilson on the making of a cosmic prog epic
‘Do you want to play with Joe?’ Before I could say ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ he brings Joe over and tells him
‘Jason wants to play a set’”: Jason Sinay on jamming with Joe Bonamassa – and why his early sessions with Mike Campbell were a struggle
here are five essential habits to keep your mind sharp and lower the risk of decline
director of the Clinical Training Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute
maintaining cognitive health is key to preserving our independence and overall quality of life
"There is a strong link between maintaining cognitive health and maintaining physical and mental health. Cognitive impairment impacts our ability to conduct daily activities, especially those related to our ability to live independently," says Julie Suhr, Director of Clinical Training and Professor of Psychology, who is a researcher at the Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute
Just like keeping an eye on your blood pressure
figuring out whether cognitive changes are normal changes associated with aging can be tricky
it’s important to tell the difference between what’s typical for different ages and what might indicate a decline associated with disease
which rely on efficient communication between brain cells
“Skills like processing speed and working memory start shifting earlier than many realize
with subtle changes appearing even in our 20s,” says Suhr
One noticeable difference often emerges in midlife—the struggle to recall names or words that seem just out of reach
Known as the "tip-of-the-tongue" phenomenon
this is a common experience and doesn’t necessarily indicate serious cognitive decline
especially when it comes to remembering names
but it’s important to recognize that these changes might be a normal part of cognitive aging
That is why it can be important to have regular cognitive screening
in order to determine what is expected for your age and what might indicate a decline in need of intervention.” Understanding these natural shifts can motivate proactive steps toward maintaining cognitive health throughout life
There’s nothing more cognitively stimulating than having to engage with other people
Research published in Lancet, a prominent peer-reviewed medical journal, identifies 14 risk factors that
could lead to a 45% reduction in dementia cases worldwide
This reduction can mean either preventing dementia or delaying its onset
allowing individuals to enjoy more productive years
Director of Clinical Training and Professor of Psychology
Engage in new and challenging cognitive activities
One of the most effective ways to preserve cognitive health is by keeping your brain active with new and stimulating activities
“Engaging in cognitively stimulating hobbies and activities lowers the risk for dementia.” This doesn’t just mean doing the daily crossword puzzle
it’s important to engage in new and novel things,” she says
or even taking a class can help keep your mind sharp and build cognitive reserve
Physical health is directly connected to brain health
“Your brain takes a disproportionate amount of the oxygenated blood from every heartbeat to maintain good functioning.” Suhr points out
“So keeping that heart healthy by lowering risk for or effective treatment for things like high cholesterol
Maintaining a strong social network is another essential factor in cognitive health
Engaging with others can help stimulate the mind and prevent cognitive decline
“There’s nothing more cognitively stimulating than having to engage with other people,” says Suhr
social interaction can help keep your mind active and connected to the world around you
and depression can take a toll on cognitive health over time
Maintaining emotional balance is critical to preserving mental sharpness as we age
“Taking care of your mental health is important,” Suhr advises
or therapy can help manage stress and promote long-term cognitive well-being
Another crucial way to safeguard cognitive health is by preventing brain injuries
“Protect yourself from traumatic brain injury by wearing helmets and preventing falls,” Suhr suggests
Avoiding accidents that could lead to head injuries—such as by using safety equipment and removing tripping hazards in your home—can help prevent cognitive decline in the long run
If you find yourself struggling with memory or thinking skills that seem unusual or more pronounced than what you’ve experienced in the past, it might be time to consider neurocognitive screening
“Having neurocognitive screening can establish a baseline
where your scores are compared to individuals most like you in age
Regular follow-up screenings can help identify changes early
providing insight into whether your cognitive abilities are shifting more rapidly than expected
it’s a smart way to stay informed about your cognitive health over time
involve the progressive degeneration of the nervous system
This deterioration can hinder daily activities and affect independence
Maintaining cognitive health is crucial for reducing the risk of these diseases. It not only keeps your brain functioning well but also enhances cognitive reserve—the ability to cope with brain changes while maintaining daily functioning
“Cognitive reserve helps explain why some individuals may show brain changes linked to Alzheimer’s disease yet continue to function well in their daily lives,” says Suhr
“It’s like they have a reserve that allows them to keep functioning cognitively
even when their brains exhibit signs of decline.”
taking care of your brain doesn’t have to be overwhelming
everyday choices can make a big difference over time
the better it will serve you in the years to come
Just be mindful—if something feels off or you notice significant changes

WI passed away peacefully into heaven on October 18th
and great-grandfather to a large family who will miss him dearly
Victor was born on the family farm in Cochrane
Vic spent his youth working on the farm where he learned the value of a strong work ethic that he carried throughout his entire life
There was never a more committed employee which he exemplified in his work in the welding and medical gas filling business among other various jobs
Vic retired from Mississippi Welders of Winona
MN in 2015 after nearly 30 combined years with the company at the age of 83
Vic asked a beautiful young lady how she was going to get home
“with you.” So began a beautiful love story as they were married on May 3
1957 and raised eight children in the Cochrane-Fountain City area
Victor led a devoted life to Christ and shared this love by remaining active in the church and teaching Sunday school
Victor loved many activities including painting ceramics
attending fairs to see old tractors and steam engines
watching and monitoring the weather and tinkering with just about anything he could fix
He especially enjoyed fishing on the lakes in Hayward
WI where he spent many summer vacations with his family
He taught his children the value of a hard day’s work and how to share his riches with those he loved
Vic would never pass up the chance to help anyone in need in any way he possibly could
He had the strength of a lion with the heart of a lamb and his family will be forever grateful for his generosity
Vic often attended family gatherings bringing with him the best-ever potato salad
It was not an official event without that amazing side dish and his heartfelt blessing of the meal
Music was another love which was often Christian or gospel; however
there would never be a polka song that wouldn’t get his hand slapping down on his knee to the beat
The joy was always obvious in his amazing smile and in his favorite expression
He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren as well as other extended family
Victor was preceded in death by the love of his life
The family would like to thank the kind residents and staff of OnaTerrace Independent Living
Vic had many great friends there whom he loved to share stories with and commiserate about the good ole days
They were a great comfort to Vic after losing his dear wife in January 2020
Services will be held at The Gathering Place at 133 Mason St.
A visitation will begin at 10am followed by a service at 11am
Then a special celebration of his life will be presented by his son
A private family burial will conclude the day
Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family
The family will graciously accept memorials in lieu of flowers to help with funeral and medical expenses
We know they were there to welcome you home
The greatest God honoring man I have known
He was a righteous example of “living life to the fullest”
He was a true example of “In Christ Alone”
Victor was a loving husband and father to his family that is for sure
In addition both he and Gloria opened their home to so many of us Gillette kids that without a doubt
many of us spent more time in their house for “get togethers” than any other in Gillette during the 80’s
Only God knows how many of us were spared run ins with the law or worse because of their open arms
Kathi and Ali hugs and know you lived well

the daughter of Victor and Gloria (Malles) Suhr
Kathi was the only daughter to her beloved parents and eldest sister to seven brothers who she loved dearly
She had five children who she dedicated her life to raising and supporting
She gave all she had to her kids and taught them how to do the same for their own children
The thing she enjoyed most of all was being “Nana” to her eleven grandchildren
Her grandchildren will never forget the time she spent making Play-Doh cookies
going to the park and having sleep overs with their cousins at Nana’s house
Kathi was always there for anyone who needed her
She was beautiful inside and out with a smile that would light up a room and a laugh that you couldn’t help but share
She was loved by all and will be missed forever
Kathi was survived by her children; Vicki (Dan) Beckman
Michael (Tracy) Suhr and Daniel (Betty) Suhr
many beloved nieces and nephews and special friend Dennis Workman
Kathi was preceded in death by her grandparents
Sending prayers for peace for you all (Heather Schomberg’s mum)
